There is considerable interest in the intersection of correlations and topology, especially in metallic systems. Among the outstanding questions are how strong correlations drive novel topological states and whether such states can be readily controlled. Here we study the effect of a Zeeman coupling on a Weyl-Kondo semimetal in a nonsymmorphic and noncentrosymmetric Kondo-lattice model. A sequence of distinct and topologically nontrivial semimetal regimes are found, each containing Kondo-driven and Fermi-energy-bound Weyl nodes. The nodes annihilate at a magnetic field that is smaller than what it takes to suppress the Kondo effect. As such, we demonstrate an extreme topological tunability that is isolated from the tuning of the strong correlations per se. Our results are important for experiments in strongly correlated systems, and set the stage for mapping out a global phase diagram for strongly correlated topology.
An empirical formula is proposed to calculate the Kondo temperature in quantum point contacts from the Zeeman splitting. A similar formula was used in the point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) method to obtain from the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo peak in the characteristics of the classical Kondo alloys AuFe and CuMn [1]. Using this formula, it is possible to find the Kondo temperature taking into account the temperature of the experiment and Lande factor of the compounds.
The effect of the Zeeman field on the defect-induced Kondo effect in graphene is investigated. The effective model of the Kondo effect is derived, and is analyzed on the basis of the numerical renormalization group method. It is found that, under the Zeeman field, at the border of the spin polarized state and the Kondo-Yosida singlet state, there is an unusual fixed point where the entropy of the defect is k_B ln2 and the expectation value of S^2_z is 1/8.
We consider the screening of an impurity moment in a d-wave superconductor under the influence of a Zeeman magnetic field. Using the Numerical Renormalization Group technique, we investigate the resulting pseudogap Kondo problem, in particular the field-induced crossover behavior in the vicinity of the zero-field boundary quantum phase transition. The impurity spectral function and the resulting changes in the local host density of states are calculated, giving specific predictions for high-field STM measurements on impurity-doped cuprates.
The Kondo lattice model, augmented by a Zeeman term, serves as a useful model of a Kondo insulator in an applied magnetic field. A variational mean field analysis of this system on a square lattice, backed up by quantum Monte Carlo calculations, reveals an interesting separation of magnetic field scales. For Zeeman energy comparable to the Kondo energy, the spin gap closes and the system develops transverse staggered magnetic order. The charge gap, however, survives up to a higher hybridization energy scale, at which point the canted antiferromagnetism is suppressed and the system becomes meta…
We consider a two-orbital impurity system with intra and inter-level Coulomb repulsion that is coupled to a single conduction channel. This situation can generically occur in multilevel quantum dots or in systems of coupled quantum dots. For finite energy-spacing between spin-degenerate orbitals, an in-plane magnetic field drives the system from a local singlet ground state to a "mixed-level" Kondo regime, where the Zeeman-split levels are degenerate for opposite spin states. We use the numerical renormalization group approach to fully characterize this mixed level Kondo state and discuss its …
We theoretically investigate the spin-resolved local density of states (SR-LDOS) of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a Kondo adatom and a STM probe. Using Green function formalism and the atomic approach in the limit of infinite Coulomb correlation, it is found an analytical SR-LDOS expression in the low temperature regime of the system. This formal result is given in terms of phase shifts originated by the adatom scattering and Fano interference. The SR-LDOS is investigated as a function of the probe position and different Fano factors. Our findings provide an …
The interplay between magnetic field and microwave applied in a single-electron transistor(SET) has a profound influence on the Kondo effect, as shown in a recent experiment[B. Hemingway, S. Herbert, M. Melloch and A. Kogan, arXiv:1304.0037(2013)]. For a given microwave frequency, the Kondo differential conductance shows a non-monotonic magnetic field dependence, and a very sharp peak is observed for certain field applied. Additionally, the microwave frequency is found to be larger of about one order than the corresponding Zeeman energy. These two features are not understood in the current the…
In a recent work Zhang and coworkers (PRB 82, 075111 (2010)) studied the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo resonance for the single impurity Anderson model in a finite magnetic field $B$ with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. There, it was found that with increasing magnetic field $B$ the position of the Kondo resonance in the total spectral function \textit{does not} approach its position in the spin resolved spectral function. Additionally, the position of the Kondo maximum exceeded the Zeeman energy for $B/ T_K\gtrsim 5-10$, where $T_K$ is the low energy Kondo scale of the model…
We study the effect of an external magnetic field in the Kondo regime of a double-quantum-dot system in which a strongly correlated dot (the "hanging dot") is coupled to a second, noninteracting dot that also bridges the gap between two external leads. In zero field, the spectral function of the hanging dot has previously been shown to exhibit a split-peak structure near the Fermi level due to "Kondo resonance filtering" by the bridging dot. We show using the numerical renormalization group that application of a magnetic field leads to a subtle interplay between electronic interference, Kondo …
We consider the spin and orbital Kondo effect in a parallel arrangement of two strongly electrostatically coupled quantum dots. Increasing the exchange of electrons between the dots through the attached leads induces the transition between the SU(4) spin- and orbital Kondo effect and SU(2) spin Kondo effect. Being the same for the SU(4) and SU(2) symmetry points, the Kondo temperature drops slightly in the intermediate regime. Experimentally, two kinds of Kondo effects can be discriminated by the sensitivity to the suppression of the spin Kondo effect by Zeeman field. The dependence of Kondo t…
We consider spin and orbital Kondo effect in a parallel arrangement of two strongly electrostatically coupled quantum dots. Increasing the exchange of electrons between the dots through the attached leads induces a smooth crossover between SU(4) spin- and orbital Kondo effect and SU(2) spin Kondo effect. Being the same for the SU(4) and SU(2) symmetry points, the Kondo temperature drops slightly in the intermediate regime. Experimentally, two kinds of Kondo effect can be discriminated by the sensitivity to the suppression of the spin Kondo effect by Zeeman field. The dependence of the Kondo te…
We present a theoretical study of low temperature nonequilibrium transport through an interacting quantum dot in the presence of Zeeman magnetic field and current injection into one of its leads. By using a self-consistent renormalized equation of motion approach, we show that the injection of a spin-polarized current leads to a modulation of the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo peak in the differential conductance. We find that an appropriate amount of spin accumulation in the lead can restore the Kondo peak by compensating the splitting due to magnetic field. By contrast when the injected curre…
We report low-temperature, high-field magnetotransport measurements of SrTiO3 gated by an ionic gel electrolyte. A saturating resistance upturn and negative magnetoresistance that signal the emergence of the Kondo effect appear for higher applied gate voltages. This observation, enabled by the wide tunability of the ionic gel-applied electric field, promotes the interpretation of the electric field-effect induced 2D electron system in SrTiO3 as an admixture of magnetic Ti3+ ions, i.e. localized and unpaired electrons, and delocalized electrons that partially fill the Ti 3d conduction band.
A Zeeman field affects the metallic heavy fermion ground state in two ways: (i) it splits the spin-degerenate conduction sea, leaving spin up and spin down Fermi surfaces with different band curvature; (ii) it competes with the Kondo effect and thus suppresses the mass enhancement. Taking these two effects into account, we compute the quasiparticle effective mass as a function of applied field strength within hybridization mean field theory. We also derive an expression for the optical conductivity, which is relevant to infrared spectroscopy measurements.
We report the observation of Kondo physics in a spin- 3/2 hole quantum dot. The dot is formed close to pinch-off in a hole quantum wire defined in an undoped AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. We clearly observe two distinctive hallmarks of quantum dot Kondo physics. First, the Zeeman spin-splitting of the zero-bias peak in the differential conductance is independent of gate voltage. Second, this splitting is twice as large as the splitting for the lowest one-dimensional subband. We show that the Zeeman splitting of the zero-bias peak is highly-anisotropic, and attribute this to the strong spin-orbi…
We study the magnetic-field effect on a Kondo insulator by exploiting the periodic Anderson model with the Zeeman term. The analysis using dynamical mean field theory combined with quantum Monte Carlo simulations determines the detailed phase diagram at finite temperatures. At low temperatures, the magnetic field drives the Kondo insulator to a transverse antiferromagnetic phase, which further enters a polarized metallic phase at higher fields. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_c$ takes a maximum when the Zeeman energy is nearly equal to the quasi-particle gap. In the paramagneti…
An Anderson model for a magnetic impurity in a two-dimensional electron gas with bulk Rashba spin-orbit interaction is solved using the numerical renormalization group under two different experimental scenarios. For a fixed Fermi energy, the Kondo temperature T_K varies weakly with Rashba coupling α, as reported previously. If instead the band filling is low and held constant, increasing αcan drive the system into a helical regime with exponential enhancement of T_K. Under either scenario, thermodynamic properties at low temperatures T exhibit the same dependences on T/T_K as are found for α= …
The Zeeman splitting of localized electrons in a quantum dot in the Kondo regime is studied using a new slave-boson formulation. Our results show that the Kondo peak splitting depends on the gate potential applied to the quantum dot and on the topology of the system. A common fact of any geometry is that the differential susceptibility shows a strong non linear behavior. It was shown that there exist a critical field above which the Kondo resonance is splitted out. This critical field rapidly diminishes when the gate potential is lowered, as a consequence of the reduction of the Kondo temperat…
The coherent spin dependent transport through a set of two capacitively coupled quantum dots placed in a magnetic field is considered within the equation of motion method. The magnetic field breaks the spin degeneracy. For special choices of gate voltages the dot levels are tuned to resonance and the orbital Kondo effect results. For different Zeemann splittings at the dots the Kondo resonance can be formed for only one spin channel. In this case the system operates as an efficient spin filter.
We study a small spin-degenerate quantum dot with even number of electrons, weakly connected by point contacts to the metallic electrodes, and subject to an external magnetic field. If the Zeeman energy B is equal to the single-particle level spacing $Δ$ in the dot, the ground state of the dot becomes doubly degenerate, and the system exhibits Kondo effect, despite the fact that B exceeds by far the Kondo temperature $T_{K}$. A possible realization of this in tunneling experiments is discussed.
We investigate a lateral semiconductor quantum dot with a large number of electrons in the limit of strong coupling to the leads. A Kondo effect is observed and can be tuned in a perpendicular magnetic field. This Kondo effect does not exhibit Zeeman splitting. It shows a modulation with the periodicity of one flux quantum per dot area at low temperatures. The modulation leads to a novel, strikingly regular stripe pattern for a wide range in magnetic field and number of electrons.
We study the SU(4) Kondo effect in carbon nanotube quantum dots, where doubly degenerate orbitals form 4-electron ``shells''. The SU(4) Kondo behavior is investigated for one, two and three electrons in the topmost shell. While the Kondo state of two electrons is quenched by magnetic field, in case of an odd number of electrons two types of SU(2) Kondo effect may survive. Namely, the spin SU(2) state is realized in the magnetic field parallel to the nanotube (inducing primarily orbital splitting). Application of the perpendicular field (inducing Zeeman splitting) results in the orbital SU(2) K…
We have recently shown [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 89}, 165314 (2014)] that a non--interacting quantum dot coupled to a one--dimensional topological superconductor and to normal leads can sustain a Majorana mode even when the dot is expected to be empty, \emph{i.e.}, when the dot energy level is far above the Fermi level of he leads. This is due to the Majorana bound state of the wire leaking into the quantum dot. Here we extend this previous work by investigating the low--temperature quantum transport through an {\it interacting} quantum dot connected to source and drain leads and side--coupled to a t…
Using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method we study a magnetic impurity coupled to a quantum wire with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in an external magnetic field. We consider the low-filling regime with the Fermi energy close to the bottom of the band and report the results for local static and dynamic properties in the Kondo regime. In the absence of the field, local impurity properties remain isotropic in spin space despite the SOC-induced magnetic anisotropy of the conduction band. In the presence of the field, clear fingerprints of anisotropy are revealed th…
Motivated by recent experimental observation of spin-orbit coupling in carbon nanotube quantum dots [F. Kuemmeth \textsl{et al.}, Nature (London) {\bf 452}, 448 (2008)], we investigate in detail its influence on the Kondo effect. The spin-orbit coupling intrinsically lifts out the fourfold degeneracy of a single electron in the dot, thereby breaking the SU(4) symmetry and splitting the Kondo resonance even at zero magnetic field. When the field is applied, the Kondo resonance further splits and exhibits fine multipeak structures resulting from the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman ef…
We investigate the dynamical and transport features of a Kondo dot side-coupled to a topological superconductor (TS). The Majorana fermion states (MFS) formed at the ends of the TS are found to be able to alter the Kondo physics profoundly: For the ideal setup where the MFS do not overlap ($ε_m=0$) a finite dot-MFS coupling $(Γ_m)$ reduces the unitary-limit value of the linear conductance by exactly a factor 3/4 in the Kondo-dominant regime $(Γ_m<T_K)$, where $T_K$ is the Kondo temperature. In the Majorana-fermion dominant phase ($Γ_m>T_K)$, on the other hand, the spin-split Kondo resonance ta…
Owing to the unusual geometry of kagome lattices-lattices made of corner-sharing triangles-their electrons are useful for studying the physics of frustrated, correlated and topological quantum electronic states. In the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic and electronic structures of kagome lattices are further entangled, which can lead to hitherto unknown spin-orbit phenomena. Here we use a combination of vector-magnetic-field capability and scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the spin-orbit nature of the kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn2 and explore the associated exotic corr…
Recent progress in the fabrication of quantum dots using silicon opens the prospect of observing the Kondo effect associated with the valley degree of freedom. We compute the dot density of states using an Anderson model with infinite Coulomb interaction $U$, whose structure mimics the nonlinear conductance through a dot. The density of states is obtained as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field in the Kondo regime using an equation-of-motion approach. We show that there is a very complex peak structure near the Fermi energy, with several signatures that distinguish this spin-va…
We study the spin-valley Kondo effect of a silicon quantum dot occupied by $% \mathcal{N}$ electrons, with $\mathcal{N}$ up to four. We show that the Kondo resonance appears in the $\mathcal{N}=1,2,3$ Coulomb blockade regimes, but not in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ one, in contrast to the spin-1/2 Kondo effect, which only occurs at $\mathcal{N}=$ odd. Assuming large orbital level spacings, the energy states of the dot can be simply characterized by fourfold spin-valley degrees of freedom. The density of states (DOS) is obtained as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field using a finite-U e…
We study electron transport through a serial double quantum dot with Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and Zeeman field of amplitude B in presence of local Coulomb repulsion. The linear conductance as a function of a gate voltage Vg equally shifting the levels on both dots shows two B=0 Kondo ridges which are robust against SOI as time-reversal symmetry is preserved. Resulting from the crossing of a spin-up and a spin-down level at vanishing SOI two additional Kondo plateaus appear at finite B. They are not protected by symmetry and rapidly vanish if the SOI is turned on. Left-right asymmetr…
We consider a quantum dot with ${\cal K}{\geq} 2$ orbital levels occupied by two electrons connected to two electric terminals. The generic model is given by a multi-level Anderson Hamiltonian. The weak-coupling theory at the particle-hole symmetric point is governed by a two-channel $S{=}1$ Kondo model characterized by intrinsic channels asymmetry. Based on a conformal field theory approach we derived an effective Hamiltonian at a strong-coupling fixed point. The Hamiltonian capturing the low-energy physics of a two-stage Kondo screening represents the quantum impurity by a two-color local Fe…

We generalize the iterative diagonalization procedure adopted in method of numerical renormalization group to analyze the Kondo effect in strong magnetic fields, where the density of states for itinerary electrons at the chemical potential varies discontinuously as the magnetic field changes. We first examine phases of many-body ground states in the presence of single impurity. By investigating change of $z$-component of total spin, $ΔS_z$, and spin-spin correlation between the impurity and conduction electrons, we find that there are three states competing for the ground state when Zeeman spl…
The Kondo effect is an archetypical phenomenon in the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. Recent attention has focused on the application of Kondo physics to quantum information science by exploiting overscreened Kondo impurities with residual anyon-like impurity entropy. While this physics was proposed in the fine-tuned multi-channel Kondo setup or in the Majorana-based topological Kondo effect, we here study the Kondo effect with symplectic symmetry Sp(2k) and present details about the implementation which importantly only involves conventional s-wave superconductivity coupled t…
Magnetic field effects in Kondo insulators are studied theoretically, using a local moment approach to the periodic Anderson model within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Our main focus is on field-induced changes in single-particle dynamics and the associated hybridization gap in the density of states. Particular emphasis is given to the strongly correlated regime, where dynamics are found to exhibit universal scaling in terms of a field-dependent low energy coherence scale. Although the bare applied field is globally uniform, the effective fields experienced by the conduction el…
We theoretically study an emergent SU(2) symmetry which is suggested by recent magneto-transport measurements, carried out near two electrons filling of a carbon nanotube quantum dot. It emerges in the case where the spin and orbital Zeeman splittings cancel each other out for two of the one-particle dot levels among four. Using the Wilson numerical renormalization group, we show that a crossover from the SU(4) to SU(2) Fermi-liquid behavior occurs at two impurity-electrons filling as magnetic field increases. We also find that the quasiparticles are significantly renormalized as the remaining…

Spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional systems is usually characterized by Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) linear in the wave vector. However, there is a growing class of materials which instead support dominant SOC cubic in the wave vector (cSOC), while their superconducting properties remain unexplored. By focusing on Josephson junctions in Zeeman field with superconductors separated by a normal cSOC region, we reveal a strongly anharmonic current-phase relation and complex spin structure. An experimental cSOC tunability enables both tunable anomalous phase shift and supercu…
The interplay of magnetic impurity and vortex in a topological superconductor is of fundamental interest with major implications for implementing quantum computation. There are multiple degrees of freedom interacting with the impurity in the system, including the Majorana zero mode (MZM), the Caroli de Gennes Matricon (CdGM) states, and the electron bulk states that form Cooper pairs, which makes the impurity pinned vortex state elusive to date in topological superconductors. Here, we present an accurate solution of the problem, based on a generalized mapping scheme and the density-matrix reno…
