We propose that a pertinently engineered double superconducting island connected to two spinless one-dimensional conducting leads can work as a tunable (iso)spin Kondo and charge Kondo system, with the lead index regarded as an effective isospin degree of freedom. We evidence how, by tuning a single gate voltage applied to the island, it is possible to make the system switch from the (iso)spin Kondo to the charge-Kondo phase, passing across an intermediate phase, in which the Kondo impurity is effectively irrelevant for the low-temperature behavior of the system.
Eventually, we evidence how to probe the various phases by measuring the ac conductance tensor of our system, by emphasizing the features that should allow to identify the onset of the so far quite elusive "charge-2" charge-Kondo effect.
Starting from the two-orbital Kondo-lattice model with classical t_2g spins, an effective spinless fermion model is derived for strong Hund coupling J_H with a projection technique. The model is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and analytically using a uniform hopping approximation. The results for the spinless fermion model are in remarkable agreement with those of the original Kondo-lattice model, independent of the carrier concentration, and even for moderate Hund coupling J_H. Phase separation, the phase diagram in uniform hopping approximation, as well as spectral properties including t…
We investigate magnetic properties induced by a spinless impurity in strongly correlated electron systems, i.e. the Hubbard model in the spatial dimension $D=1,2,$ and 3. For the 1D system exploiting the Bethe ansatz exact solution we find that the spin susceptibility and the local density of states in the vicinity of a spinless impurity show divergent behaviors. The results imply that the induced local moment is not completely quenched at any finite temperatures. On the other hand, the spin lattice relaxation rate obtained by bosonization and boundary conformal field theory satisfies a relati…
We discuss a device --- a purely capacitively coupled interacting spinless triple quantum dot system --- for the observation of the SU(3) Kondo effect. Unlike more familiar SU(2) and SU(4) Kondo effects in quantum dot devices which lead to unitary linear conductance at low temperatures, the SU(3) Kondo scenario can be easily identified by the conductance pinned to a characteristic value of 3/4 of the unitary limit. This is associated with the interesting fact that the SU(3) Kondo effect does not occur at the particle-hole symmetric point, where the system is found instead in the valence-fluctu…
We compare the effects of in-plane non magnetic Li$^{+}$ and Zn$^{2+}$ impurities on the normal state of high-T$_{c}$ cuprates. Y NMR shows that the extra hole introduced by Li is not localized in its vicinity. The Tc depression and induced moments on near neighbour Cu sites of Zn or Li are found identical. These universal effects of spinless impurities establish the major influence of the spin perturbation with respect to the charge defect. The susceptibility of the induced moment measured by Li NMR displays a 1/(T+Theta) behavior. Theta increases with doping up to about 200 K in the overdope…
The predicted interplay between Kondo physics and non-trivial topology in SmB$_{6}$ has stimulated many experimental reports, some of which are in apparent contradiction. The origin of the dispute may lie on the fragility of the Kondo insulating phase in the presence of Sm vacancies (Kondo holes) and/or natural impurities, such as Gd$^{3+}$. In this work, we locally investigated this fragility for Al-flux grown Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ single crystals (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.02) by combining electron spin resonance (ESR) and complementary bulk measurements. The Gd$^{3+}$ ESR spectra in a highl…
We derive a generalized Luttinger-Ward expression for the Free energy of a many body system involving a constrained Hilbert space. In the large $N$ limit, we are able to explicity write the entropy as a functional of the Green's functions. Using this method we obtain a Luttinger sum rule for the Kondo lattice. One of the fascinating aspects of the sum rule, is that it contains two components, one describing the heavy electron Fermi surface, the other, a sea of oppositely charged, spinless fermions. In the heavy electron state, this sea of spinless fermions is completely filled and the electron…
We study Kondo screening obtained by coupling Majorana bound states, located on a topological superconducting island, to interacting electronic reservoirs. At the charge degeneracy points of the island, we formulate an exact mapping onto the spin-$1/2$ multi-channel Kondo effect. The coupling to Majorana fermions transforms the tunneling terms into effective fermionic bilinear contributions with a Luttinger parameter $K$ in the leads that is effectively doubled. For strong interaction, $K=1/2$, the intermediate fixed point of the standard multi-channel Kondo model is exactly recovered. It evol…
We propose a simple but novel scheme to realize the Kondo effect with ultracold atoms. Our system consists of a Fermi sea of spinless fermions interacting with an impurity atom of different species which is confined by an isotropic potential. The interspecies attraction can be tuned with an $s$-wave Feshbach resonance so that the impurity atom and a spinless fermion form a bound dimer that occupies a threefold-degenerate $p$ orbital of the confinement potential. Many-body scatterings of this dimer and surrounding spinless fermions occur with exchanging their angular momenta and thus exhibit th…
We study a Majorana island coupled to a bulk superconductor via a Josephson junction and to multiple external normal leads. In the absence of the Josephson coupling, the system displays a topological Kondo state, which had been largely studied recently. However, we find that this state is unstable even to small Josephson coupling, which instead leads at low temperature $T$ to a new fixed point. Most interesting is the case of three external leads, forming a minimal electronic realization of the long sought two-channel Kondo effect. While the $T=0$ conductance corresponds to simple resonant And…
Replacing a magnetic atom by a spinless atom in a heavy fermion compound generates a quantum state often referred to as a 'Kondo-hole'. No experimental imaging has been achieved of the atomic-scale electronic structure of a Kondo-hole, or of their destructive impact (Lawrence JM, et al. (1996) Kondo hole behavior in Ce0. 97La0. 03Pd3. Phys Rev B 53:12559-12562; Bauer ED, et al. (2011) Electronic inhomogeneity in a Kondo lattice. Proc Natl Acad Sci. 108:6857-6861) on the hybridization process between conduction and localized electrons which generates the heavy fermion state. Here we report visu…
We study the local density of states (LDOS) in systems of Luttinger-liquid nanowires connected to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, in which Majorana bound states give rise to different types of topological Kondo effects. We show that electron interactions enhance the low-energy LDOS in the leads close to the island, with unusual exponents due to Kondo physics that can be probed in tunneling experiments.
We present a high temperature series expansion for the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in the large coupling limit, which is used to model CMR perovskites. Our results show the expected cross-over to Curie-Weiß behavior at a temperature related to the bandwidth. Estimates for the magnetic transition temperatures are in the experimentally observed range. The compressibility shows that the high temperature charge excitations can be modeled by spinless fermions. The CMR effect itself, however, warrants the inclusion of dynamic effects and cannot be explained by a static calculation.
We investigate the continuous quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion liquid based on the Kondo lattice model in two dimensions. We propose that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and conduction electrons fractionalize into neutral bosonic spinons and charged spinless fermions at the quantum critical point. This deconfined quantum criticality leads us to establish a critical field theory in terms of the fractionalized fields interacting via emergent U(1) gauge fields. The critical field theory not only predicts non-Fermi liquid physics near the quantum crit…
Using a canonical transformation it is possible to faithfully represent the Kondo lattice model in terms of Majorana fermions. Studying this representation we discovered an exact mapping between the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian and a Hamiltonian describing three spinless fermions interacting on a lattice. We investigate the effectiveness of this three fermion representation by performing a zero temperature mean-field study of the phase diagram at different couplings and fillings for the one-dimensional case, focusing on the appearance of ferromagnetism. The solutions agree in many respects with t…
We study the thermal transport through a Majorana island connected to multiple external quantum wires. In the presence of a large charging energy, we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is nontrivially violated at low temperature, contrarily to what happens for the overscreened Kondo effect and for nontopological junctions. For three wires, we find that the Lorenz ratio is rescaled by a universal factor 2/3 and we show that this behavior is due to the presence of localized Majorana modes on the island.
We study numerically the one-dimensional Kondo and Hund lattices consisting of localized spins interacting antiferro or ferromagnetically with the itinerant electrons, respectively. Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group we find, for both models and in the small coupling regime, the existence of new magnetic phases where the local spins order forming ferromagnetic islands coupled antiferromagnetically. Furthermore, by increasing the interaction parameter $|J|$ we find that this order evolves toward the ferromagnetic regime through a spiral-like phase with longer characteristic wave len…
We introduce and study a simplification of the symmetric single-impurity Kondo model. In the Ising-Kondo model, host electrons scatter off a single magnetic impurity at the origin whose spin orientation is dynamically conserved. This reduces the problem to potential scattering of spinless fermions that can be solved exactly using the equation-of-motion technique. The Ising-Kondo model provides an example for static screening. At low temperatures, the thermodynamics at finite magnetic fields resembles that of a free spin-1/2 in a reduced external field. Alternatively, the Curie law can be inter…
The continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method is applied to the interacting resonant level model (IRLM) using double expansion with respect to Coulomb interaction Ufc and hybridization V. Thermodynamics of the IRLM without spin is equivalent to the anisotropic Kondo model in the low-energy limit. Exact dynamics and thermodynamics of the IRLM are derived numerically for a wide range of Ufc with a given value of V. For negative Ufc, excellent agreement including a quantum critical point is found with a simple scaling formula that deals with V in the lowest-order, and Ufc up to infinite order. A…

A spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev sublattice interacting with a subsystem of spinless fermions is studied on a honeycomb lattice when the fermion band is half filled. The model Hamiltonian describes a topological Kondo lattice with the Kitaev interaction, it is solved exactly by reduction to free Majorana fermions in a static $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. An yet unsolved problem of a hybridization of fermions and local moments in the Kondo lattice at low temperatures is solved in the framework of the model proposed. The Kondo hybridization gap is opened and the system is fixed in insulator and spin in…
The ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with an antiferromagnetic interaction between localized spins is a minimal description of the competing kinetic t and magnetic K energy terms which generate the rich physics of manganite systems. Motivated by the discovery in one dimension of homogeneous ``island phases'', we consider the possibility of analogous phases in higher dimensions. We characterize the phases present at commensurate fillings, and consider in detail the effects of phase separation in all filling and parameter regimes. We deduce that island and flux phases are stable for intermediat…
We consider the motion of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions. For antiferromagnetic interaction between the impurity and the fermions, the low temperature behavior of the system is governed by the two-channel Kondo effect, leading to the impurity becoming completely opaque to the spin excitations of the gas. As well as the known spectral signatures of the two-channel Kondo effect, we find that the low temperature mobility of the resulting `Kondo polaron' takes the universal form $μ\to \frac{3\hbar v_F^2}{2πk_B^2T^2}$, in sharp contrast to the spinless case where …
A Coulomb blockaded $M$-Majorana island coupled to normal metal leads realizes a novel type of Kondo effect where the effective impurity "spin" transforms under the orthogonal group $SO(M)$. The impurity spin stems from the non-local topological ground state degeneracy of the island and thus the effect is known as the topological Kondo effect. We introduce a physically motivated $N$-channel generalization of the topological Kondo model. Starting from the simplest case $N=2$, we conjecture a stable intermediate coupling fixed point and evaluate the resulting low-temperature impurity entropy. Th…
Abnormal electronic properties of complex systems require new ideas concerning explanation of their behavior and possibility of realization. In this acticle we show that a colossal magnetoresistance is realized in the state of the topological Kondo insulator, that is similar to the Kondo insulator state in the Kondo lattice. The mechanism of the phenomenon is the following: in the spin gapless phase an external magnetic field induces the gap in the spectrum of spin excitations, the gap in the spectrum of fermions is opened due to a hybridization between spin and fermion subsystems at half fill…
A leading candidate for experimental confirmation of the non-local quantum dynamics of Majorana fermions is the topological Kondo effect, predicted for mesoscopic superconducting islands connected to metallic leads. We identify an anisotropic, Toulouse-like, limit of the topological Kondo problem where the full nonequilibrium conductance and shot noise can be calculated exactly. Near the Kondo fixed point, we find novel asymptotic features including a universal conductance scaling function, and fractional charge quantisation observable via the Fano factor. In the universal regime, our results …
We discuss the Kondo effect in a spinless two-orbital conduction electron system coupled with anharmonic Jahn-Teller vibration by employing a numerical renormalization group technique. When a temperature $T$ is decreased, we encounter a plateau of $\log 3$ entropy due to quasi-triple degeneracy of local low-energy states, composed of vibronic ground states and the first excited state with an excitation energy of $ΔE$. Around at $T$$\approx$$ΔE$, we observe an entropy change from $\log 3$ to $\log 2$. This $\log 2$ entropy originates from the rotational degree of freedom of the vibronic state a…
Many-body correlations and macroscopic quantum behaviors are fascinating condensed matter problems. A powerful test-bed for the many-body concepts and methods is the Kondo model which entails the coupling of a quantum impurity to a continuum of states. It is central in highly correlated systems and can be explored with tunable nanostructures. Although Kondo physics is usually associated with the hybridization of itinerant electrons with microscopic magnetic moments, theory predicts that it can arise whenever degenerate quantum states are coupled to a continuum. Here we demonstrate the previous…
Using the numerical renormalization group method, we study the splitting of the Kondo resonance by a magnetic field applied in different directions in the Kondo model for anisotropic magnetic impurities. Several types of magnetic anisotropy are considered: the XXZ exchange coupling anisotropy J_perp J_z, the longitudinal magnetic anisotropy DS_z^2, and the transverse magnetic anisotropy E(S_x^2-S_y^2). In the spin-1/2 model with the XXZ exchange coupling anisotropy we find very small direction dependence in the magnitude of the splitting. In the spin-3/2 model with the easy-plane (D>0) anisotr…
We study the low energy spectrum of a correlated quantum dot embedded between the normal conducting and superconducting reservoirs and hybridized with the topological superconducting nanowire, hosting the Majorana end-modes. We investigate the leaking Majorana quasiparticle and inspect its interplay with the proximity induced on-dot pairing and correlations. In particular, we focus on the subgap Kondo effect near the quantum phase transition/crossover from the spinfull (doublet) to the spinless (BCS-type singlet) configurations. Treating the correlations perturbatively and within the NRG appro…
Quantum impurity problems in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) are reviewed with emphasis on their analogy to the Kondo problem in Fermi liquids. First, the problem of a static impurity in a spinless TLL is considered, which is related to the model studied in the context of the macroscopic quantum coherence. In the low-energy limit the TLL is essentially cut into two pieces when interaction is repulsive. The orthogonality catastrophe in a TLL is then discussed. Finally, the Kondo effect of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional repulsively interacting electron liquids (a spinful TLL) is revi…
We measure the magnetic susceptibility nearby Li spinless impurities in the superconducting phase of the high Tc cuprate YBaCuO. The induced moment which was found to exist above Tc persists below Tc. In the underdoped regime, it retains its Curie law below Tc. In contrast, near optimal doping, the large Kondo screening observed above Tc (T_K=135 K) is strongly reduced below Tc as expected theoretically when the superconducting gap develops. This moment still extends essentially on its 4 near neighbour Cu, showing the persistence of AF correlations in the superconducting state. A direct compar…
Inelastic spin flip excitations associated with single-ion magnetic anisotropy of quantum spins, can be strongly renormalized by Kondo exchange coupling to the conduction electrons in the substrate, as shown recently for the case of Co adatoms on CuN$_2$ islands. In this case differential conductance spectra show zero-bias anomalies due to a Kondo effect of the doubly degenerate ground state, and finite-bias step features due to spin flip excitations. Here I consider spin-1 quantum magnets with positive uniaxial anisotropy, where the ground state is non-degenerate and hence the Kondo effect do…
Tuning a material to the cusp between two distinct ground states can produce exotic physical properties, unlike those in either of the neighboring phases. The prospect of designing a model experimental system to capture such behavior is tantalizing. An array of tunnel-coupled quantum dots, each hosting a local spin, should have an appropriately complex phase diagram, but scaling up from individual dots to uniform clusters or lattices has proven difficult: though each site can be tuned to the same occupancy, each has a different set of localized wavefunctions whose couplings to neighboring site…
We study an interacting quantum dot in contact with a superconducting island described by the Richardson model with a Coulomb repulsion term controlling the number of electrons on the island. This Hamiltonian admits a compact matrix-product-operator representation and can be efficiently and accurately solved using the density-matrix renormalization group. We systematically explore the effects of the charging energy $E_c$. For $E_c$ comparable to the superconducting gap $Δ$, the subgap states are stabilized by the combination of Kondo exchange coupling and charge redistribution driven by the Co…
The topological Kondo effect arises when conduction electrons in metallic leads are coupled to a mesoscopic superconducting island with Majorana fermions. Working with its minimal setup, we study the lead electron local tunneling density of states in its thermally smeared form motivated by scanning tunneling microscopy, focusing on the component $ρ_{2 k_F}$ oscillating at twice the Fermi wavenumber. As a function of temperature $T$ and at zero bias, we find that the amplitude of $ρ_{2 k_F}$ is nonmonotonic, whereby with decreasing $T$ an exponential thermal-length-controlled increase, potentia…
We emulate renormalization group models, such as the Spin-Boson Hamiltonian or the anisotropic Kondo model, from a quantum optics perspective by considering a superconducting device. The infra-red confinement involves photon excitations of two tunable transmission lines entangled to an artificial spin-1/2 particle or double-island charge qubit. Focusing on the propagation of microwave light, in the underdamped regime of the Spin-Boson model, we identify a many-body resonance where a photon is absorbed at the renormalized qubit frequency and reemitted forward in an elastic manner. We also show …

The influence of a nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion of strength V on the properties of the Ferromagnetic Kondo model is analyzed using computational techniques. The Hamiltonian studied here is defined on a chain using localized S=1/2 spins, and one orbital per site. Special emphasis is given to the influence of the Coulomb repulsion on the regions of phase separation recently discovered in this family of models, as well as on the double-exchange-induced ferromagnetic ground state. When phase separation dominates at V=0, the Coulomb interaction breaks the large domains of the two competing ph…

We study the interplay between Coulomb blockade and the Kondo effect in quantum dots. We use a self-consistent scheme which describes mesoscopic devices in terms of a collective phase variable (slave rotor) and quasiparticle degrees of freedom. In the strong Coulomb blockade regime, we recover the description of metallic islands in terms of a phase only action. For a dot with well-separated levels, our method leads to the Kondo effect. We identify the regime where a crossover between the Coulomb blockade regime at high temperatures and the formation of a Kondo resonance at lower temperature ta…
The Kondo effect may be observable in some atom-surface scattering experiments, in particular, those involving alkaline-earth atoms. By combining Keldysh techniques with the NCA approximation to solve the time-dependent Newns-Anderson Hamiltonian in the infinite-U limit, Shao, Nordlander and Langreth found an anomalously strong surface-temperature dependence of the outgoing charge state fractions. Here we employ the dynamical 1/N expansion with finite Coulomb interaction U to provide a more realistic description of the scattering process. We test the accuracy of the 1/N expansion in the spinle…
We study the transport properties of a serial double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to two superconducting leads, focusing on the Josephson current through the DQD and the associated 0-$π$ transitions which result from the subtle interplay between the superconductivity, the Kondo physics, and the inter-dot superexchange interaction. We examine the competition between the superconductivity and the Kondo physics by tuning the relative strength $Δ/T_K$ of the superconducting gap $Δ$ and the Kondo temperature $T_K$, for different strengths of the superexchange coupling determined by the interdot tunnel…
By using the drone-fermion representation and the Schwinger-Keldysh approach, we calculate the current noise and the charge noise for a single-electron transistor in the non-equilibrium state in the presence of large quantum fluctuation of island charge. Our result interpolates between those of the "orthodox theory" and the "co-tunneling theory". We find the following effects which are not treated by previous theories: (i) At zero temperature T=0 and at finite applied bias voltage $|eV| \gg T_{K}$, where $T_{K}$ is the "Kondo temperature", we find the Fano factor is suppressed more than the su…
A systematic truncation of the many-body Hilbert space is implemented to study how electrons in a quantum dot attached to conducting leads respond to time-dependent biases. The method, which we call the dynamical 1/N approach, is first tested in the most unfavorable case, the case of spinless fermions (N=1). We recover the expected behavior, including transient ringing of the current in response to an abrupt change of bias. We then apply the approach to the physical case of spinning electrons, N=2, in the Kondo regime for the case of infinite intradot Coulomb repulsion. In agreement with previ…
Based on the recent paper (Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 216803, (2009)), we study the nonequilibrium occupation number and charge susceptibility of a resonance level close to a dissipative quantum phase transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type between a de-localized phase for weak dissipation and a localized phase for strong dissipation. The resonance level is coupled to two spinless fermionic baths with a finite bias voltage and an Ohmic bosonic bath representing the dissipative environment. The system is equivalent to an effective anisotropic Kondo model out of equilibrium. Within the nonequ…
We examine the spinless one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) below half-filling, addressing both the binary alloy and valence transition interpretations of the model. Using a non-perturbative technique, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the occupation of the localized orbitals, providing a comprehensive description of charge order in the FKM. In particular, we uncover the contradictory ordering roles of the forward-scattering and backscattering itinerant electrons: the latter are responsible for the crystalline phases, while the former produces the phase separation. We find an Isin…
Motivated by increasing experimental evidence of exotic magnetism in low-dimensional iron-based materials, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of magnetic states of the multiorbital Hubbard ladder in the orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). The model we used is relevant for iron-based compounds of the AFe$_2$X$_3$ family (where A${}={}$Cs, Rb, Ba, K are alkali metals and X${}={}$S, Se are chalcogenides). To reduce computational effort, and obtain almost exact numerical results in the ladder geometry, we utilize a low-energy description of the Hubbard model in the OSMP - the general…
In spin-charge coupled systems, geometrical frustration of underlying lattice structures can give rise to nontrivial magnetic orders and electronic states. Here we explore such a possibility in the Kondo lattice model with classical localized spins on a triangular lattice by using a variational calculation and simulated annealing. We find that the system exhibits a four-sublattice collinear ferrimagnetic phase at 5/8 filling for a large Hund's-rule coupling. In this state, the system spontaneously differentiates into the up-spin kagome network and the isolated down-spin sites, which we call th…
Majorana zero modes (MZM-s) occurring at the edges of a 1D, p-wave, spinless superconductor, in absence of fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, are quintessential examples of topologically-protected zero-energy modes occurring at the edges of 1D symmetry-protected topological phases. In this work, we numerically investigate the fate of the topological phase in the presence of phase-fluctuations using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. To that end, we consider a one-dimensional array of MZM-s on mesoscopic superconducting islands at zero temp…
We study a spinless level that hybridizes with a fermionic band and is also coupled via its charge to a dissipative bosonic bath. We consider the general case of a power-law hybridization function $Γ(\w)\propto |\w|^r$ with $r\ge 0$, and a bosonic bath spectral function $B(\w)\propto \w^s$ with $s\ge -1$. For $r<1$ and $\mathrm{max}(0,2r-1)<s<1$, this Bose-Fermi quantum impurity model features a continuous zero-temperature transition between a delocalized phase, with tunneling between the impurity level and the band, and a localized phase, in which dissipation suppresses tunneling in the low-e…
We calculate the finite-frequency current noise of a nonequilibrium resonance-level quantum dot close to a dissipative quantum phase transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type between a de-localized phase for weak dissipation and a localized phase for strong dissipation. The resonance-level is coupled to two spinless fermionic baths with a finite bias voltage and an Ohmic boson bath representing the dissipative environment. The system is equivalent to an effective anisotropic Kondo model out of equilibrium. To compute the finite-frequency noise, we combine two recently developed Functiona…
