For any $k\geq 1$, we study the distribution of the difference between the number of integers $n\leq x$ with $ω(n)=k$ or $Ω(n)=k$ in two different arithmetic progressions, where $ω(n)$ is the number of distinct prime factors of $n$ and $Ω(n)$ is the number of prime factors of $n$ counted with multiplicity . Under some reasonable assumptions, we show that, if $k$ is odd, the integers with $Ω(n)=k$ have preference for quadratic non-residue classes; and if $k$ is even, such integers have preference for quadratic residue classes. This result confirms a conjecture of Richard Hudson. However, the integers with $ω(n)=k$ always have preference for quadratic residue classes. Moreover, as $k$ increases, the biases become smaller and smaller for both of the two cases.
Partitions of the set of primes are introduced based on the Chebyshev polynomials at rationals. The prime densities of all such partitions are established. Euler's Criterion for $SL(2,\mathbb Q)$ is formulated, which is the bridge between the algebra of Chebyshev polynomials and number-theoretic properties of the partitions. It is shown how to obtain in this way some of the classical theory of Lucas sequences. A hidden symmetry of the problem is revealed by the new language. As an application number-theoretic properties of simple dynamical systems (rotations and certain interval maps) are disc…

We survey results about prime number races, that is, results about the relative sizes of prime counting functions $π_{q,a}(x)$, with $q$ fixed and $a$ varying. In particular, we describe recent work by the authors on these problems.
The appearance of primes in a family of linear recurrence sequences labelled by a positive integer $n$ is considered. The terms of each sequence correspond to a particular class of Lehmer numbers, or (viewing them as polynomials in $n$) dilated versions of the so-called Chebyshev polynomials of the fourth kind, also known as airfoil polynomials. It is proved that when the value of $n$ is given by a dilated Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind evaluated at a suitable integer, either the sequence contains a single prime, or no term is prime. For all other values of $n$, it is conjectured that …
The authors assume the Deep Riemann Hypothesis to prove that a weighted sum of Ramanujan's $τ$-function has a bias to being positive. This phenomenon is an analogue of Chebyshev's bias.
One aspect of Chebyshev's bias is the phenomenon that a prime number, $ q $, modulo another prime number, $ p$, experimentally seems to be slightly more likely to be a nonquadratic residue than a quadratic residue. We thought it would be interesting to model this residue bias as a "random" walk using Legendre symbol values as steps. Such a model would allow us to easily visualize the bias. In addition, we would be able to extend our model to other number fields. In this report, we first outline underlying theory and some motivations for our research. In the second section, we present our findi…
We note an interesting and under-expressed fact from Chebyshev's initial bounding for the prime counting function, $π(x) := \# \{p \leq x : p \text{ prime}\},$ based upon a selection of fixed coefficients $d\in D$ to show $ψ(x) \asymp x$, and thus the goal of choosing some $a(d)$ approximately the same as $μ(d)$ such that: $$ \sum_{d}\frac{a(d)}{d} = 0, \quad \wedge \quad -\sum_{d}\frac{a(d)\log d}{d} \approx 1.$$
For an integer $a$ consider the sequence $(T_{n}(a)-1)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ defined by the Chebyshev polynomials $T_{n}$. We list all pairs $(n,a)$ for which the term $T_{n}(a)-1$ has no primitive prime divisor.
Let $\{p_n\}_{n\ge 1}$ be the sequence of primes and $\vartheta(x) = \sum_{p \leq x} \log p$, where $p$ runs over the primes not exceeding $x$, be the Chebyshev $\vartheta$-function. In this note we derive lower and upper bounds for $\vartheta(p_n)/n$ by comparing it with $\log p_{n+1}$ and deduce that $\vartheta(p_n)/n=\log p_{n+1}\left(1-\frac{1}{\log n}+\frac{\log\log n}{\log^2 n}\left(1+o(1)\right)\right).$
The function $ε(x)=\mbox{li}(x)-π(x)$ is known to be positive up to the (very large) Skewes' number. Besides, according to Robin's work, the functions $ε_θ(x)=\mbox{li}[θ(x)]-π(x)$ and $ε_ψ(x)=\mbox{li}[ψ(x)]-π(x)$ are positive if and only if Riemann hypothesis (RH) holds (the first and the second Chebyshev function are $θ(x)=\sum_{p \le x} \log p$ and $ψ(x)=\sum_{n=1}^x Λ(n)$ , respectively, $\mbox{li}(x)$ is the logarithmic integral , $μ(n)$ and $Λ(n)$ are the Möbius and the Von Mangoldt functions). Negative jumps in the above functions $ε$ , $ε_θ$ and $ε_ψ$ may potentially occur only at $x+…
Chebyshev presented a conjecture after observing the apparent bias towards primes congruent to $3\pmod 4$. His conjecture is equivalent to a version of the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis. Fujii strengthened this conjecture; we strengthen it still further using detailed computations of zeroes of Dirichlet $L$-functions.
In this paper we discuss the generalizations of the concept of Chebyshev's bias from two perspectives. First we give a general framework for the study of prime number races and Chebyshev's bias attached to general $L$-functions satisfying natural analytic hypotheses. This extends the cases previously considered by several authors and involving, among others, Dirichlet $L$-functions and Hasse--Weil $L$-functions of elliptic curves over $\mathbf{Q}$. This also apply to new Chebyshev's bias phenomena that were beyond the reach of the previously known cases. In addition we weaken the required hypo…
For any $k\geq 1$, this paper studies the number of polynomials having $k$ irreducible factors (counted with or without multiplicities) in $\mathbf{F}_q[t]$ among different arithmetic progressions. We obtain asymptotic formulas for the difference of counting functions uniformly for $k$ in a certain range. In the generic case, the bias dissipates as the degree of the modulus or $k$ gets large, but there are cases when the bias is extreme. In contrast to the case of products of $k$ prime numbers, we show the existence of complete biases in the function field setting, that is the difference funct…
Prime counting functions are believed to exhibit, in various contexts, discrepancies beyond what famous equidistribution results predict; this phenomenon is known as Chebyshev's bias. Rubinstein and Sarnak have developed a framework which allows to conditionally quantify biases in the distribution of primes in general arithmetic progressions. Their analysis has been generalized by Ng to the context of the Chebotarev density theorem, under the assumption of the Artin holomorphy conjecture, the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, as well as a linear independence hypothesis on the zeros of Artin $L$-…
We give explicit numerical estimates for the generalized Chebyshev functions. Explicit results of this kind are useful for estimating of computational complexity of algorithms which generates special primes. Such primes are needed to construct an elliptic curve over prime field using complex multiplication method.
The $k$th Dickson polynomial of the first kind, $D_k(x) \in {\mathbb Z}[x]$, is determined by the formula: $D_k(u+1/u) = u^k + 1/u^k$, where $k \ge 0$ and $u$ is an indeterminate. These polynomials are closely related to Chebyshev polynomials and have been widely studied. Leonard Eugene Dickson proved in 1896 that $D_k(x)$ is a permutation polynomial on ${\mathbb F}_{p^n}$, $p$ prime, if and only if GCD$(k,p^{2n}-1)=1$, and his result easily carries over to Chebyshev polynomials when $p$ is odd. This article continues on this theme, as we find special subsets of ${\mathbb F}_{p^n}$ that are st…
We study the inequities in the distribution of Frobenius elements in Galois extensions of the rational numbers with Galois groups that are either dihedral $D_{2n}$ or (generalized) quaternion $\mathbb H_{2n}$ of two-power order. In the spirit of recent work of Fiorilli and Jouve arXiv:2001.05428, we study, under natural hypotheses, some families of such extensions, in a horizontal aspect, where the degree is fixed, and in a vertical aspect, where the degree goes to infinity. Our main contribution uncovers in families of extensions a phenomenon, for which Ng gave numerical evidence : real zeros…
In this article, we provide explicit bounds for the prime counting function $θ(x)$ in all ranges of $x$. The bounds for the error term for $θ(x)- x$ are of the shape $εx$ and $\frac{c_k x}{(\log x)^k}$, for $k=1,\ldots,5$. Tables of values for $ε$ and $c_k$ are provided.

In this paper, we develop a novel analytic method to prove the prime number theorem in de la Vallée Poussin's form: $$ π(x)=\operatorname{li}(x)+\mathcal O(xe^{-c\sqrt{\log x}}) $$ Instead of performing asymptotic expansion on Chebyshev functions as in conventional analytic methods, this new approach uses contour-integration method to analyze Riemann's prime counting function $J(x)$, which only differs from $π(x)$ by $\mathcal O(\sqrt x/\log x)$.
In this paper we establish explicit upper and lower bounds for the ratio of the arithmetic and geometric means of the prime numbers, which improve the current best estimates. Further, we prove several conjectures related to this ration stated by Hassani. In order to do this, we use explicit estimates for the prime counting function, Chebyshev's $\vartheta$-function and the sum of the first $n$ prime numbers.
We study sums of Dirichlet characters over polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ with a prescribed number of irreducible factors. Our main results are explicit formulae for these sums in terms of zeros of Dirichlet L-functions. We also exhibit new phenomena concerning Chebyshev-type biases of such sums when the number of irreducible factors is very large.
In this paper we first establish new explicit estimates for Chebyshev's $\vartheta$-function. Applying these new estimates, we derive new upper and lower bounds for some functions defined over the prime numbers, for instance the prime counting function $π(x)$, which improve the currently best ones. Furthermore, we use the obtained estimates for the prime counting function to give two new results concerning the existence of prime numbers in short intervals.
Let $ψ_\K$ be the Chebyshev function of a number field $\K$. Under GRH we prove an explicit upper bound for $|ψ_\K(x)-x|$ in terms of the degree and the discriminant of $\K$. The new bound improves significantly on previous known results.
In this paper we use refined approximations for Chebyshev's $\vartheta$-function to establish new explicit estimates for the prime counting function $π(x)$, which improve the current best estimates for large values of $x$. As an application we find an upper bound for the number $H_0$ which is defined to be the smallest positive integer so that Ramanujan's prime counting inequality holds for every $x \geq H_0$.
In this paper we establish a new explicit upper and lower bound for the $n$-th prime number, which improve the currently best estimates given by Dusart in 2010. As the main tool we use some recently obtained explicit estimates for the prime counting function. A further main tool is the usage of estimates concerning the reciprocal of $\log p_n$. As an application we derive refined estimates for $\vartheta(p_n)$ in terms of $n$, where $\vartheta(x)$ is Chebyshev's $\vartheta$-function.
In this paper we give effective estimates for some classical arithmetic functions defined over prime numbers. First we find the smallest real number $x_0$ so that some inequality involving Chebyshev's $\vartheta$-function holds for every $x \geq x_0$. Then we give some new results concerning the existence of prime numbers in short intervals. Also we derive new upper and lower bounds for some functions defined over prime numbers, for instance the prime counting function $π(x)$, which improve current best estimates of similar shape.
In this paper, we are going to prove a famous problem concerning prime numbers. Bertrand postulate states that there is always a prime p with n < p < 2n, if n > 1. Bertrand postulate is not a newer one to be proven, in fact, after his assumption and numerical evidence, Chebyshev was the first person who proved it. Subsequently, Ramanujan proved it using properties of Gamma function, and Erdös published a simpler proof with the help of Primorial function, p#. Our approach is unique in the sense that we have used mathematical induction for finding the upper and lower bounds for the second Chebys…
对于区间[kn,(k+1)n]中是否总有素数这个老问题,著名的伯特兰公设对k=1给出了肯定的答案。这是由P.L.
Let $ψ_{\mathbb K}$ be the Chebyshev function of a number field $\mathbb K$. Let $ψ^{(1)}_{\mathbb K}(x):=\int_{0}^{x}ψ_{\mathbb K}(t)\,d t$ and $ψ^{(2)}_{\mathbb K}(x):=2\int_{0}^{x}ψ^{(1)}_{\mathbb K}(t)\,d t$. We prove under GRH explicit inequalities for the differences $|ψ^{(1)}_{\mathbb K}(x) - \tfrac{x^2}{2}|$ and $|ψ^{(2)}_{\mathbb K}(x) - \tfrac{x^3}{3}|$. We deduce an efficient algorithm for the computation of the residue of the Dedekind zeta function and a bound on small-norm prime ideals.
We study the difference between the number of primitive roots modulo $p$ and modulo $p+k$ for prime pairs $p,p+k$. Assuming the Bateman-Horn conjecture, we prove the existence of strong sign biases for such pairs. More importantly, we prove that for a small positive proportion of prime pairs $p,p+k$, the dominant inequality is reversed.
We generalize current known distribution results on Shanks--Rényi prime number races to the case where arbitrarily many residue classes are involved. Our method handles both the classical case that goes back to Chebyshev and function field analogues developed in the recent years. More precisely, let $π(x;q,a)$ be the number of primes up to $x$ that are congruent to $a$ modulo $q$. For a fixed integer $q$ and distinct invertible congruence classes $a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_D$, assuming the generalized Riemann Hypothesis and a weak version of the linear independence hypothesis, we show that the set of $…
