The problem of finding code distance has been long studied for the generic ensembles of linear codes and led to several algorithms that substantially reduce exponential complexity of this task. However, no asymptotic complexity bounds are known for distance verification in other ensembles of linear codes. Our goal is to re-design the existing generic algorithms of distance verification and derive their complexity for LDPC codes. We obtain new complexity bounds with provable performance expressed in terms of the erasure-correcting thresholds of long LDPC codes. These bounds exponentially reduce complexity estimates known for linear codes.
The techniques of distance verification known for general linear codes are re-applied to quantum stabilizer codes. Then distance verification is addressed for classical and quantum LDPC codes. New complexity bounds for distance verification with provable performance are derived using the average weight spectra of the ensembles of LDPC codes. These bounds are expressed in terms of the erasure-correcting capacity of the corresponding ensemble. We also present a new irreducible-cluster technique that can be applied to any LDPC code and takes advantage of parity-checks' sparsity for both classical…
We present a linked-cluster technique for calculating the distance of a quantum LDPC code. It offers an advantage over existing deterministic techniques for codes with small relative distances (which includes all known families of quantum LDPC codes), and over the probabilistic technique for codes with sufficiently high rates.
The current best asymptotic lower bound on the minimum distance of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate is logarithmic in the blocklength. We propose a construction of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate and prove that the minimum distance grows proportionally to the square root of the blocklength.
We give a construction of quantum LDPC codes of dimension $Θ(\log N)$ and distance $Θ(N/\log N)$ as the code length $N\to\infty$. Using a product of chain complexes this construction also provides a family of quantum LDPC codes of distance $Ω(N^{1-α/2}/\log N)$ and dimension $Ω(N^α\log N)$, where $0 \le α< 1$. We also introduce and study a new operation called lifted product, which naturally generalizes the product operations for quantum codes and chain complexes. Moreover, as a simple byproduct of our results on quantum codes, we obtain a new result on classical codes. We show that for any fi…
In this paper asymptotic methods are used to form lower bounds on the free distance to constraint length ratio of several ensembles of regular, asymptotically good, protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. In particular, we show that the free distance to constraint length ratio of the regular LDPC convolutional codes exceeds that of the minimum distance to block length ratio of the corresponding LDPC block codes.
Two upper bounds on the minimum distance of type-1 quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC LDPC) codes are derived. The necessary condition is given for the minimum code distance of such codes to grow linearly with the code length.
In [1] a syndrome counting based upper bound on the minimum distance of regular binary LDPC codes is given. In this paper we extend the bound to the case of irregular and generalized LDPC codes over GF(q). The comparison to the lower bound for LDPC codes over GF(q) and to the upper bound for non-binary codes is done. The new bound is shown to lie under the Gilbert-Varshamov bound at high rates.
Families of generalized spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (GSC-LDPC) code ensembles can be formed by terminating protograph-based generalized LDPC convolutional (GLDPCC) codes. It has previously been shown that ensembles of GSC-LDPC codes constructed from a protograph have better iterative decoding thresholds than their block code counterparts, and that, for large termination lengths, their thresholds coincide with the maximum a-posteriori (MAP) decoding threshold of the underlying generalized LDPC block code ensemble. Here we show that, in addition to their excellent iterative decodi…
We provide a new lower bound on the minimum distance of a family of quantum LDPC codes based on Cayley graphs proposed by MacKay, Mitchison and Shokrollahi. Our bound is exponential, improving on the quadratic bound of Couvreur, Delfosse and Zémor. This result is obtained by examining a family of subsets of the hypercube which locally satisfy some parity conditions.
Constructing quantum LDPC codes with a minimum distance that grows faster than a square root of the length has been a major challenge of the field. With this challenge in mind, we investigate constructions that come from high-dimensional expanders, in particular Ramanujan complexes. These naturally give rise to very unbalanced quantum error correcting codes that have a large $X$-distance but a much smaller $Z$-distance. However, together with a classical expander LDPC code and a tensoring method that generalises a construction of Hastings and also the Tillich-Zemor construction of quantum code…
Minimum distance is an important parameter of a linear error correcting code. For improved performance of binary Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, we need to have the minimum distance grow fast with n, the codelength. However, the best we can hope for is a linear growth in dmin with n. For binary LDPC codes, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the LDPC ensemble parameters, to ensure linear growth of minimum distance is well established. In the case of non-binary LDPC codes, the structure of logarithmic weight codewords is different from that of binary codes. We have carried out a p…
Ensembles of (J,K)-regular low-density parity-check convolutional (LDPCC) codes are known to be asymptotically good, in the sense that the minimum free distance grows linearly with the constraint length. In this paper, we use a protograph-based analysis of terminated LDPCC codes to obtain an upper bound on the free distance growth rate of ensembles of periodically time-varying LDPCC codes. This bound is compared to a lower bound and evaluated numerically. It is found that, for a sufficiently large period, the bounds coincide. This approach is then extended to obtain bounds on the trapping set …
We examine LDPC codes decoded using linear programming (LP). Four contributions to the LP framework are presented. First, a new method of tightening the LP relaxation, and thus improving the LP decoder, is proposed. Second, we present an algorithm which calculates a lower bound on the minimum distance of a specific code. This algorithm exhibits complexity which scales quadratically with the block length. Third, we propose a method to obtain a tight lower bound on the fractional distance, also with quadratic complexity, and thus less than previously-existing methods. Finally, we show how the fu…
Recent developments have shown the existence of quantum low-density parity check (qLDPC) codes with constant rate and linear distance. A natural question concerns the efficient decodability of these codes. In this paper, we present a linear time decoder for the recent quantum Tanner codes construction of asymptotically good qLDPC codes, which can correct all errors of weight up to a constant fraction of the blocklength. Our decoder is an iterative algorithm which searches for corrections within constant-sized regions. At each step, the corrections are found by reducing a locally defined and ef…
LDPC convolutional codes have been shown to be capable of achieving the same capacity-approaching performance as LDPC block codes with iterative message-passing decoding. In this paper, asymptotic methods are used to calculate a lower bound on the free distance for several ensembles of asymptotically good protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Further, we show that the free distance to constraint length ratio of the LDPC convolutional codes exceeds the minimum distance to block length ratio of corresponding LDPC block codes.
This work applies earlier results on Quasi-Cyclic (QC) LDPC codes to the codes specified in six separate IEEE 802 standards, specifying wireless communications from 54 MHz to 60 GHz. First, we examine the weight matrices specified to upper bound the codes' minimum distance independent of block length. Next, we search for the minimum distance achieved for the parity check matrices selected at each block length. Finally, solutions to the computational challenges encountered are addressed.
We face the following dilemma for designing low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) for quantum error correction. 1) The row weights of parity-check should be large: The minimum distances are bounded above by the minimum row weights of parity-check matrices of constituent classical codes. Small minimum distance tends to result in poor decoding performance at the error-floor region. 2) The row weights of parity-check matrices should not be large: The sum-product decoding performance at the water-fall region is degraded as the row weight increases. Recently, Kudekar et al. showed spatially-coupled…
Families of "asymptotically regular" LDPC block code ensembles can be formed by terminating (J,K)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. By varying the termination length, we obtain a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates and substantially better iterative decoding thresholds than those of (J,K)-regular LDPC block code ensembles, despite the fact that the terminated ensembles are almost regular. Also, by means of an asymptotic weight enumerator analysis, we show that minimum distance grows linearly with block length for all of the ensembles in these f…
In this paper, the minimum distance distribution of irregular generalized LDPC (GLDPC) code ensembles is investigated. Two classes of GLDPC code ensembles are analyzed; in one case, the Tanner graph is regular from the variable node perspective, and in the other case the Tanner graph is completely unstructured and irregular. In particular, for the former ensemble class we determine exactly which ensembles have minimum distance growing linearly with the block length with probability approaching unity with increasing block length. This work extends previous results concerning LDPC and regular GL…
In article present measure code distance algorithm of binary and ternary linear block code using block Korkin-Zolotarev (BKZ). Proved the upper bound on scaling constant for measure code distance of non-systematic linear block code using BKZ-method for different value of the block size. Introduced method show linear decrease of runtime from number of threads and work especially good under not dense lattices of LDPC-code. These properties allow use this algorithm to measure the minimal distance of code with length several thousand. The algorithm can further improve by transform into probabilist…
Recent work has shown that properly designed protograph-based LDPC codes may have minimum distance linearly increasing with block length. This notion rests on ensemble arguments over all possible expansions of the base protograph. When implementation complexity is considered, the expansion is typically chosen to be quite orderly. For example, protograph expansion by cyclically shifting connections creates a quasi-cyclic (QC) code. Other recent work has provided upper bounds on the minimum distance of QC codes. In this paper, these bounds are expanded upon to cover puncturing and tightened in s…
Parameters of LDPC codes, such as minimum distance, stopping distance, stopping redundancy, girth of the Tanner graph, and their influence on the frame error rate performance of the BP, ML and near-ML decoding over a BEC and an AWGN channel are studied. Both random and structured LDPC codes are considered. In particular, the BP decoding is applied to the code parity-check matrices with an increasing number of redundant rows, and the convergence of the performance to that of the ML decoding is analyzed. A comparison of the simulated BP, ML, and near-ML performance with the improved theoretical …
In this paper, we present a new method for explicitly constructing regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on $\mathbb{S}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$, the space of $n\times n$ symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Using this method, we obtain two classes of binary LDPC codes, $\cal{C}(n,q)$ and $\cal{C}^{T}(n,q)$, both of which have grith $8$. Then both the minimum distance and the stopping distance of each class are investigated. It is shown that the minimum distance and the stopping distance of $\cal{C}^{T}(n,q)$ are both $2q$. As for $\cal{C}(n,q)$, we determine the minimum distanc…
This paper considers the performance of $(j,k)$-regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with message-passing (MP) decoding algorithms in the high-rate regime. In particular, we derive the high-rate scaling law for MP decoding of LDPC codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) and the $q$-ary symmetric channel ($q$-SC). For the BEC, the density evolution (DE) threshold of iterative decoding scales like $Θ(k^{-1})$ and the critical stopping ratio scales like $Θ(k^{-j/(j-2)})$. For the $q$-SC, the DE threshold of verification decoding depends on the details of the decoder and scales like $Θ(…
The relation between parity-check matrices of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and biadjacency matrices of bipartite graphs supports searching for powerful LDPC block codes. Using the principle of tailbiting, compact representations of bipartite graphs based on convolutional codes can be found. Bounds on the girth and the minimum distance of LDPC block codes constructed in such a way are discussed. Algorithms for searching iteratively for LDPC block codes with large girth and for determining their minimum distance are presented. Constructions based on all-ones matrices, …

Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes are an important class of codes with many applications. Two algebraic methods for constructing regular LDPC codes are derived -- one based on nonprimitive narrow-sense BCH codes and the other directly based on cyclotomic cosets. The constructed codes have high rates and are free of cycles of length four; consequently, they can be decoded using standard iterative decoding algorithms. The exact dimension and bounds for the minimum distance and stopping distance are derived. These constructed codes can be used to derive quantum error-correcting codes.
Cages, defined as regular graphs with minimum number of nodes for a given girth, are well-studied in graph theory. Trapping sets are graphical structures responsible for error floor of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, and are well investigated in coding theory. In this paper, we make connections between cages and trapping sets. In particular, starting from a cage (or a modified cage), we construct a trapping set in multiple steps. Based on the connection between cages and trapping sets, we then use the available results in graph theory on cages and derive tight upper bounds on the size o…
Quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are a promising avenue to reduce the cost of constructing scalable quantum circuits. However, it is unclear how to implement these codes in practice. Seminal results of Bravyi & Terhal, and Bravyi, Poulin & Terhal have shown that quantum LDPC codes implemented through local interactions obey restrictions on their dimension $k$ and distance $d$. Here we address the complementary question of how many long-range interactions are required to implement a quantum LDPC code with parameters $k$ and $d$. In particular, in 2D we show that a quantum LDPC with…
Our main technical result is that, in the coset leader graph of a linear binary code of block length n, the metric balls spanned by constant-weight vectors grow exponentially slower than those in $\{0,1\}^n$. Following the approach of Friedman and Tillich (2006), we use this fact to improve on the first linear programming bound on the rate of LDPC codes, as the function of their minimal distance. This improvement, combined with the techniques of Ben-Haim and Lytsin (2006), improves the rate vs distance bounds for LDPC codes in a significant sub-range of relative distances.
A non-binary (2,v)-regular LDPC code is defined by a parity-check matrix with column weight 2 and row weight v. In this report, we give an ontology-based approach to the optimization for this class of codes. All possible inter-connected cycle patterns that lead to low symbol-weight codewords are identified to put together the ontology. The optimization goal is to improve the distance property of equivalent binary images. Using the proposed method, the estimation and optimization of bit-distance spectrum becomes easily handleable. Three codes in the CCSDS recommendation are analyzed and several…
Families of "asymptotically regular" LDPC block code ensembles can be formed by terminating (J,K)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. By varying the termination length, we obtain a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates, minimum distance that grows linearly with block length, and capacity approaching iterative decoding thresholds, despite the fact that the terminated ensembles are almost regular. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the quasi-cyclic (QC) members of such an ensemble. We show that an upper bound on the minimum Hamming dista…
In this paper, the stability condition for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) is extended to generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes and doublygeneralized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes. It is proved that, in both cases, the stability condition only involves the component codes with minimum distance 2. The stability condition for GLDPC codes is always expressed as an upper bound to the decoding threshold. This is not possible for D-GLDPC codes, unless all the generalized variable nodes have minimum distance at least 3. Furthermore, a condition called derivative matching is …
We present a tree-based construction of LDPC codes that have minimum pseudocodeword weight equal to or almost equal to the minimum distance, and perform well with iterative decoding. The construction involves enumerating a $d$-regular tree for a fixed number of layers and employing a connection algorithm based on permutations or mutually orthogonal Latin squares to close the tree. Methods are presented for degrees $d=p^s$ and $d = p^s+1$, for $p$ a prime. One class corresponds to the well-known finite-geometry and finite generalized quadrangle LDPC codes; the other codes presented are new. We …
The speed at which two remote parties can exchange secret keys over a fixed-length fiber-optic cable in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is currently limited by the computational complexity of post-processing algorithms for key reconciliation. Multi-edge low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with low code rates and long block lengths were proposed for CV-QKD, in order to extend the maximum reconciliation distance between the two remote parties. Key reconciliation over multiple dimensions has been shown to further improve the error-correction performance of multi-edge LDPC …
Quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes based on protographs are of great interest to code designers because analysis and implementation are facilitated by the protograph structure and the use of circulant permutation matrices for protograph lifting. However, these restrictions impose undesirable fixed upper limits on important code parameters, such as minimum distance and girth. In this paper, we consider an approach to constructing QC-LDPC codes that uses a two-step lifting procedure based on a protograph, and, by following this method instead of the usual one-step procedure, w…
Quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are an important instance of proto-graph-based LDPC codes. In this paper we present upper bounds on the minimum Hamming distance of QC LDPC codes and study how these upper bounds depend on graph structure parameters (like variable degrees, check node degrees, girth) of the Tanner graph and of the underlying proto-graph. Moreover, for several classes of proto-graphs we present explicit QC LDPC code constructions that achieve (or come close to) the respective minimum Hamming distance upper bounds. Because of the tight algebraic connection b…
It has previously been shown that ensembles of terminated protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes have a typical minimum distance that grows linearly with block length and that they are capable of achieving capacity approaching iterative decoding thresholds on the binary erasure channel (BEC). In this paper, we review a recent result that the dramatic threshold improvement obtained by terminating LDPC convolutional codes extends to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Also, using a (3,6)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional code ensemble as an e…
We survey the existing techniques for calculating code distances of classical codes and apply these techniques to generic quantum codes. For classical and quantum LDPC codes, we also present a new linked-cluster technique. It reduces complexity exponent of all existing deterministic techniques designed for codes with small relative distances (which include all known families of quantum LDPC codes), and also surpasses the probabilistic technique for sufficiently high code rates.
We adapt a construction of Guth and Lubotzky [arXiv:1310.5555] to obtain a family of quantum LDPC codes with non-vanishing rate and minimum distance scaling like $n^{0.1}$ where $n$ is the number of physical qubits. Similarly as in [arXiv:1310.5555], our homological code family stems from hyperbolic 4-manifolds equipped with tessellations. The main novelty of this work is that we consider a regular tessellation consisting of hypercubes. We exploit this strong local structure to design and analyze an efficient decoding algorithm.
Product LDPC codes take advantage of LDPC decoding algorithms and the high minimum distance of product codes. We propose to add suitable interleavers to improve the waterfall performance of LDPC decoding. Interleaving also reduces the number of low weight codewords, that gives a further advantage in the error floor region.
There have been lots of efforts on the construction of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with large girth. However, most of them are focused on protographs with single edges and little research has been done for the construction of QC LDPC codes lifted from protographs with multiple edges. Compared to single-edge protographs, multiple-edge protographs have benefits such that QC LDPC codes lifted from them can potentially have larger minimum Hamming distance. In this paper, all subgraph patterns of multiple-edge protographs, which prevent QC LDPC codes from having large gi…
Recent work by Divsalar et al. has shown that properly designed protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes typically have minimum (Hamming) distance linearly increasing with block length. This fact rests on ensemble arguments over all possible expansions of the base protograph. However, when implementation complexity is considered, the expansions are frequently selected from a smaller class of structured expansions. For example, protograph expansion by cyclically shifting connections generates a quasi-cyclic (QC) code. Other recent work by Smarandache and Vontobel has provided uppe…
Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes are a significant class of classical codes with many applications. Several good LDPC codes have been constructed using random, algebraic, and finite geometries approaches, with containing cycles of length at least six in their Tanner graphs. However, it is impossible to design a self-orthogonal parity check matrix of an LDPC code without introducing cycles of length four. In this paper, a new class of quantum LDPC codes based on lines and points of finite geometries is constructed. The parity check matrices of these codes are adapted to be self-orthogonal …
In this work we introduce a new notion of expansion in higher dimensions that is stronger than the well studied cosystolic expansion notion, and is termed {\em Collective-cosystolic expansion}. We show that tensoring two cosystolic expanders yields a new cosystolic expander, assuming one of the complexes in the product, is not only cosystolic expander, but rather a collective cosystolic expander. We then show that the well known bounded degree cosystolic expanders, the Ramanujan complexes are, in fact, collective cosystolic expanders. This enables us to construct new bounded degree cosystolic …
The family of hyperbolic surface codes is one of the rare families of quantum LDPC codes with non-zero rate and unbounded minimum distance. First, we introduce a family of hyperbolic color codes. This produces a new family of quantum LDPC codes with non-zero rate and with minimum distance logarithmic in the blocklength. Second, we study the tradeoff between the length n, the number of encoded qubits k and the distance d of surface codes and color codes. We prove that kd^2 is upper bounded by C(log k)^2n, where C is a constant that depends only on the row weight of the parity-check matrix. Our …
A new construction is proposed for low density parity check (LDPC) codes using quadratic permutation polynomials over finite integer rings. The associated graphs for the new codes have both algebraic and pseudo-random nature, and the new codes are quasi-cyclic. Graph isomorphisms and automorphisms are identified and used in an efficient search for good codes. Graphs with girth as large as 12 were found. Upper bounds on the minimum Hamming distance are found both analytically and algorithmically. The bounds indicate that the minimum distance grows with block length. Near-codewords are one of th…
Quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are an important class of quantum error correcting codes. In such codes, each qubit only affects a constant number of syndrome bits, and each syndrome bit only relies on some constant number of qubits. Constructing quantum LDPC codes is challenging. It is an open problem to understand if there exist good quantum LDPC codes, i.e. with constant rate and relative distance. Furthermore, techniques to perform fault-tolerant gates are poorly understood. We present a unified way to address these problems. Our main results are a) a bound on the distance, b…
We show how to construct an algorithm to search for binary idempotents which may be used to construct binary LDPC codes. The algorithm, which allows control of the key properties of sparseness, code rate and minimum distance, is constructed in the Mattson-Solomon domain. Some of the new codes, found by using this technique, are displayed.
In this paper, we present a method of constructing new families of LDPC block code ensembles formed by terminating irregular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Using the accumulate-repeat-by-4-jagged-accumulate (AR4JA) protograph as an example, a density evolution analysis for the binary erasure channel shows that this flexible design technique gives rise to a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates and thresholds close to capacity. Further, by means of an asymptotic weight enumerator analysis, we show that all the ensembles in this family also have minimum…
