In this paper, the stability condition for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) is extended to generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes and doublygeneralized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes. It is proved that, in both cases, the stability condition only involves the component codes with minimum distance 2. The stability condition for GLDPC codes is always expressed as an upper bound to the decoding threshold. This is not possible for D-GLDPC codes, unless all the generalized variable nodes have minimum distance at least 3. Furthermore, a condition called derivative matching is defined in the paper. This condition is sufficient for a GLDPC or DGLDPC code to achieve the stability condition with equality. If this condition is satisfied, the threshold of D-GLDPC codes (whose generalized variable nodes have all minimum distance at least 3) and GLDPC codes can be expressed in closed form.
The growth rate of the weight distribution of irregular doubly-generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes is developed and in the process, a new efficient numerical technique for its evaluation is presented. The solution involves simultaneous solution of a 4 x 4 system of polynomial equations. This represents the first efficient numerical technique for exact evaluation of the growth rate, even for LDPC codes. The technique is applied to two example D-GLDPC code ensembles.
In this paper, an expression for the asymptotic growth rate of the number of small linear-weight codewords of irregular doubly-generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes is derived. The expression is compact and generalizes existing results for LDPC and generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes. Assuming that there exist check and variable nodes with minimum distance 2, it is shown that the growth rate depends only on these nodes. An important connection between this new result and the stability condition of D-GLDPC codes over the BEC is highlighted. Such a connection, previously observed for LDPC and GLDPC codes,…
This paper analyzes the asymptotic exponent of the weight spectrum for irregular doubly-generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes. In the process, an efficient numerical technique for its evaluation is presented, involving the solution of a 4 x 4 system of polynomial equations. The expression is consistent with previous results, including the case where the normalized weight or stopping set size tends to zero. The spectral shape is shown to admit a particularly simple form in the special case where all variable nodes are repetition codes of the same degree, a case which includes Tanner codes; for this …
The iterative decoding threshold of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC) fulfills an upper bound depending only on the variable and check nodes with minimum distance 2. This bound is a consequence of the stability condition, and is here referred to as stability bound. In this paper, a stability bound over the BEC is developed for doubly-generalized LDPC codes, where the variable and the check nodes can be generic linear block codes, assuming maximum a posteriori erasure correction at each node. It is proved that in this generalized context as well the bou…
Ensembles with check or variable node minimum distance greater than 2 are shown to be have good growth rate behavior, while for other ensembles a fundamental parameter is identified which discriminates between an asymptotically small and an asymptotically large expected number of small linear-weight codewords. Also, in the…
Using the EXIT chart approach, a necessary and sufficient condition is developed for the local stability of iterative decoding of multi-edge type (MET) doubly-generalized low-density parity-check (D-GLDPC) code ensembles. In such code ensembles, the use of arbitrary linear block codes as component codes is combined with the further design of local Tanner graph connectivity through the use of multiple edge types. The stability condition for these code ensembles is shown to be succinctly described in terms of the value of the spectral radius of an appropriately defined polynomial matrix.
A class of doubly-generalized low-density parity-check (D-GLDPC) codes, where single parity-check (SPC) codes are used as variable nodes (VNs), is investigated. An expression for the growth rate of the weight distribution of any D-GLDPC ensemble with a uniform check node (CN) set is presented at first, together with an analytical technique for its efficient evaluation. These tools are then used for detailed analysis of a case study, namely, a rate-1/2 D-GLDPC ensemble where all the CNs are (7,4) Hamming codes and all the VNs are length-7 SPC codes. It is illustrated how the VN representations …
Protograph low-density-parity-check (LDPC) are considered to design near-capacity low-rate codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC) and binary additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channel. For protographs with degree-one variable nodes and doubly-generalized LDPC (DGLDPC) codes, conditions are derived to ensure equality of bit-error threshold and block-error threshold. Using this condition, low-rate codes with block-error threshold close to capacity are designed and shown to have better error rate performance than other existing codes.
In this paper, we analyse asymptotically a new class of LDPC codes called Non-binary Hybrid LDPC codes, which has been recently introduced. We use density evolution techniques to derive a stability condition for hybrid LDPC codes, and prove their threshold behavior. We study this stability condition to conclude on asymptotic advantages of hybrid LDPC codes compared to their non-hybrid counterparts.
We derive the density evolution equations for non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) ensembles when transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. We introduce ensembles defined with respect to the general linear group over the binary field. For these ensembles the density evolution equations can be written compactly. The density evolution for the general linear group helps us in understanding the density evolution for codes defined with respect to finite fields. We compute thresholds for different alphabet sizes for various LDPC ensembles. Surprisingly, the threshold is not a m…
We study error bounds for linear programming decoding of regular LDPC codes. For memoryless binary-input output-symmetric channels, we prove bounds on the word error probability that are inverse doubly-exponential in the girth of the factor graph. For memoryless binary-input AWGN channel, we prove lower bounds on the threshold for regular LDPC codes whose factor graphs have logarithmic girth under LP-decoding. Specifically, we prove a lower bound of $σ=0.735$ (upper bound of $\frac{Eb}{N_0}=2.67$dB) on the threshold of $(3,6)$-regular LDPC codes whose factor graphs have logarithmic girth. Our …
This work proposes a tractable estimation of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of various families of sparse-graph code ensembles, by using an approximation for the extended belief propagation generalized extrinsic information transfer (EBP-GEXIT) function, first proposed by Measson et al. We consider the transmission over non-binary complex-input additive white Gaussian noise channel and extend the existing results to obtain an expression for the GEXIT function. We estimate the MAP threshold by applying the Maxwell construction to the obtained approximate EBP-GEXIT charts for various f…
The multi-edge type LDPC codes, introduced by Richardson and Urbanke, present the general class of structured LDPC codes. In this paper, we derive the average weight distributions of the multi-edge type LDPC code ensembles. Furthermore, we investigate the asymptotic exponential growth rate of the average weight distributions and investigate the connection to the stability condition of the density evolution.
In this paper, we construct protograph-based spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes by coupling together a series of L disjoint, or uncoupled, LDPC code Tanner graphs into a single coupled chain. By varying L, we obtain a flexible family of code ensembles with varying rates and frame lengths that can share the same encoding and decoding architecture for arbitrary L. We demonstrate that the resulting codes combine the best features of optimized irregular and regular codes in one design: capacity approaching iterative belief propagation (BP) decoding thresholds and linear gro…
We consider the effect of LLR saturation on belief propagation decoding of low-density parity-check codes. Saturation occurs universally in practice and is known to have a significant effect on error floor performance. Our focus is on threshold analysis and stability of density evolution. We analyze the decoder for certain low-density parity-check code ensembles and show that belief propagation decoding generally degrades gracefully with saturation. Stability of density evolution is, on the other hand, rather strongly affected by saturation and the asymptotic qualitative effect of saturation i…
An irregular LDGM-LDPC code is studied as a sub-code of an LDPC code with some randomly \emph{punctured} output-bits. It is shown that the LDGM-LDPC codes achieve rates arbitrarily close to the channel-capacity of the binary-input symmetric-output memoryless (BISOM) channel with bounded \emph{complexity}. The measure of complexity is the average-degree (per information-bit) of the check-nodes for the factor-graph of the code. A lower-bound on the average degree of the check-nodes of the irregular LDGM-LDPC codes is obtained. The bound does not depend on the decoder used at the receiver. The st…
Density evolution for protograph Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes is considered, and it is shown that the message-error rate falls double-exponentially with iterations whenever the degree-2 subgraph of the protograph is cycle-free and noise level is below threshold. Conditions for stability of protograph density evolution are established and related to the structure of the protograph. Using large-girth graphs, sequences of protograph LDPC codes with block-error threshold equal to bit-error threshold and block-error rate falling near-exponentially with blocklength are constructed determini…
This paper focuses on finite-dimensional upper and lower bounds on decodable thresholds of Zm and binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, assuming belief propagation decoding on memoryless channels. A concrete framework is presented, admitting systematic searches for new bounds. Two noise measures are considered: the Bhattacharyya noise parameter and the soft bit value for a maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder on the uncoded channel. For Zm LDPC codes, an iterative m-dimensional bound is derived for m-ary-input/symmetric-output channels, which gives a sufficient stability cond…
A ternary message passing (TMP) decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check codes is developed. All messages exchanged between variable and check nodes have a ternary alphabet, and the variable nodes exploit soft information from the channel. A density evolution analysis is developed for unstructured and protograph-based ensembles. For unstructured ensembles the stability condition is derived. Optimized ensembles for TMP decoding show asymptotic gains of up to 0.6 dB with respect to ensembles optimized for binary message passing decoding. Finite length simulations of codes from TMP-optimiz…
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) coding for a multitude of equal-capacity channels is studied. First, based on numerous observations, a conjecture is stated that when the belief propagation decoder converges on a set of equal-capacity channels, it would also converge on any convex combination of those channels. Then, it is proved that when the stability condition is satisfied for a number of channels, it is also satisfied for any channel in their convex hull. For the purpose of code design, a method is proposed which can decompose every symmetric channel with capacity C into a set of identical-…
We present an analysis, under iterative decoding, of coset LDPC codes over GF(q), designed for use over arbitrary discrete-memoryless channels (particularly nonbinary and asymmetric channels). We use a random-coset analysis to produce an effect that is similar to output-symmetry with binary channels. We show that the random selection of the nonzero elements of the GF(q) parity-check matrix induces a permutation-invariance property on the densities of the decoder messages, which simplifies their analysis and approximation. We generalize several properties, including symmetry and stability from …
The min-sum (MS) algorithm is arguably the second most fundamental algorithm in the realm of message passing due to its optimality (for a tree code) with respect to the {\em block error} probability \cite{Wiberg}. There also seems to be a fundamental relationship of MS decoding with the linear programming decoder \cite{Koetter}. Despite its importance, its fundamental properties have not nearly been studied as well as those of the sum-product (also known as BP) algorithm. We address two questions related to the MS rule. First, we characterize the stability condition under MS decoding. It turns…
