The growth rate of the weight distribution of irregular doubly-generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes is developed and in the process, a new efficient numerical technique for its evaluation is presented. The solution involves simultaneous solution of a 4 x 4 system of polynomial equations. This represents the first efficient numerical technique for exact evaluation of the growth rate, even for LDPC codes. The technique is applied to two example D-GLDPC code ensembles.
In this paper, an expression for the asymptotic growth rate of the number of small linear-weight codewords of irregular doubly-generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes is derived. The expression is compact and generalizes existing results for LDPC and generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes. Assuming that there exist check and variable nodes with minimum distance 2, it is shown that the growth rate depends only on these nodes. An important connection between this new result and the stability condition of D-GLDPC codes over the BEC is highlighted. Such a connection, previously observed for LDPC and GLDPC codes,…
In this paper, the stability condition for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on the binary erasure channel (BEC) is extended to generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes and doublygeneralized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes. It is proved that, in both cases, the stability condition only involves the component codes with minimum distance 2. The stability condition for GLDPC codes is always expressed as an upper bound to the decoding threshold. This is not possible for D-GLDPC codes, unless all the generalized variable nodes have minimum distance at least 3. Furthermore, a condition called derivative matching is …
This paper analyzes the asymptotic exponent of the weight spectrum for irregular doubly-generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes. In the process, an efficient numerical technique for its evaluation is presented, involving the solution of a 4 x 4 system of polynomial equations. The expression is consistent with previous results, including the case where the normalized weight or stopping set size tends to zero. The spectral shape is shown to admit a particularly simple form in the special case where all variable nodes are repetition codes of the same degree, a case which includes Tanner codes; for this …
The iterative decoding threshold of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC) fulfills an upper bound depending only on the variable and check nodes with minimum distance 2. This bound is a consequence of the stability condition, and is here referred to as stability bound. In this paper, a stability bound over the BEC is developed for doubly-generalized LDPC codes, where the variable and the check nodes can be generic linear block codes, assuming maximum a posteriori erasure correction at each node. It is proved that in this generalized context as well the bou…
Ensembles with check or variable node minimum distance greater than 2 are shown to be have good growth rate behavior, while for other ensembles a fundamental parameter is identified which discriminates between an asymptotically small and an asymptotically large expected number of small linear-weight codewords. Also, in the…
Using the EXIT chart approach, a necessary and sufficient condition is developed for the local stability of iterative decoding of multi-edge type (MET) doubly-generalized low-density parity-check (D-GLDPC) code ensembles. In such code ensembles, the use of arbitrary linear block codes as component codes is combined with the further design of local Tanner graph connectivity through the use of multiple edge types. The stability condition for these code ensembles is shown to be succinctly described in terms of the value of the spectral radius of an appropriately defined polynomial matrix.
A class of doubly-generalized low-density parity-check (D-GLDPC) codes, where single parity-check (SPC) codes are used as variable nodes (VNs), is investigated. An expression for the growth rate of the weight distribution of any D-GLDPC ensemble with a uniform check node (CN) set is presented at first, together with an analytical technique for its efficient evaluation. These tools are then used for detailed analysis of a case study, namely, a rate-1/2 D-GLDPC ensemble where all the CNs are (7,4) Hamming codes and all the VNs are length-7 SPC codes. It is illustrated how the VN representations …
The minimum pseudoweight is an important parameter related to the decoding performance of LDPC codes with iterative message-passing decoding. In this paper, we consider ensembles of periodically time-varying spatially coupled LDPC (SC-LDPC) codes and the pseudocodewords arising from their finite graph covers of a fixed degree. We show that for certain $(J,K)$-regular SC-LDPC code ensembles and a fixed cover degree, the typical minimum pseudoweight of the unterminated (and associated tail-biting/terminated) SC-LDPC code ensembles grows linearly with the constraint (block) length as the constrai…
Protograph low-density-parity-check (LDPC) are considered to design near-capacity low-rate codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC) and binary additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channel. For protographs with degree-one variable nodes and doubly-generalized LDPC (DGLDPC) codes, conditions are derived to ensure equality of bit-error threshold and block-error threshold. Using this condition, low-rate codes with block-error threshold close to capacity are designed and shown to have better error rate performance than other existing codes.
Ensembles of (J,K)-regular low-density parity-check convolutional (LDPCC) codes are known to be asymptotically good, in the sense that the minimum free distance grows linearly with the constraint length. In this paper, we use a protograph-based analysis of terminated LDPCC codes to obtain an upper bound on the free distance growth rate of ensembles of periodically time-varying LDPCC codes. This bound is compared to a lower bound and evaluated numerically. It is found that, for a sufficiently large period, the bounds coincide. This approach is then extended to obtain bounds on the trapping set …
Families of "asymptotically regular" LDPC block code ensembles can be formed by terminating (J,K)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. By varying the termination length, we obtain a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates and substantially better iterative decoding thresholds than those of (J,K)-regular LDPC block code ensembles, despite the fact that the terminated ensembles are almost regular. Also, by means of an asymptotic weight enumerator analysis, we show that minimum distance grows linearly with block length for all of the ensembles in these f…
A solution is presented for the asymptotic growth rate of the AWGN-pseudoweight distribution of regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles for a selected graph cover degree M >= 1. The evaluation of the growth rate requires solution of a system of 2M+1 nonlinear equations in 2M+1 unknowns. Simulation results for the pseudoweight distribution of two regular LDPC code ensembles are presented for graph covers of low degree.
Convolutional Low-Density-Parity-Check (LDPC) ensembles have excellent performance. Their iterative threshold increases with their average degree, or with the size of the coupling window in randomized constructions. In the later case, as the window size grows, the Belief Propagation (BP) threshold attains the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold of the underlying ensemble. In this contribution we show that a similar phenomenon happens for the growth rate of coupled ensembles. Loosely speaking, we observe that as the coupling strength grows, the growth rate of the coupled ensemble comes close t…
The error floor of LDPC is revisited as an effect of dynamic message behavior in the so-called absorption sets of the code. It is shown that if the signal growth in the absorption sets is properly balanced by the growth of set-external messages, the error floor can be lowered to essentially arbitrarily low levels. Importance sampling techniques are discussed and used to verify the analysis, as well as to discuss the impact of iterations and message quantization on the code performance in the ultra-low BER (error floor) regime.
We study error bounds for linear programming decoding of regular LDPC codes. For memoryless binary-input output-symmetric channels, we prove bounds on the word error probability that are inverse doubly-exponential in the girth of the factor graph. For memoryless binary-input AWGN channel, we prove lower bounds on the threshold for regular LDPC codes whose factor graphs have logarithmic girth under LP-decoding. Specifically, we prove a lower bound of $σ=0.735$ (upper bound of $\frac{Eb}{N_0}=2.67$dB) on the threshold of $(3,6)$-regular LDPC codes whose factor graphs have logarithmic girth. Our …
This work proposes a tractable estimation of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) threshold of various families of sparse-graph code ensembles, by using an approximation for the extended belief propagation generalized extrinsic information transfer (EBP-GEXIT) function, first proposed by Measson et al. We consider the transmission over non-binary complex-input additive white Gaussian noise channel and extend the existing results to obtain an expression for the GEXIT function. We estimate the MAP threshold by applying the Maxwell construction to the obtained approximate EBP-GEXIT charts for various f…
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are capable of achieving excellent performance and provide a useful alternative for high performance applications. However, at medium to high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), an observable error floor arises from the loss of independence of messages passed under iterative graph-based decoding. In this paper, the error floor performance of short block length codes is improved by use of a novel candidate selection metric in code graph construction. The proposed Multipath EMD approach avoids harmful structures in the graph by evaluating certain properties of the…
The multi-edge type LDPC codes, introduced by Richardson and Urbanke, present the general class of structured LDPC codes. In this paper, we derive the average weight distributions of the multi-edge type LDPC code ensembles. Furthermore, we investigate the asymptotic exponential growth rate of the average weight distributions and investigate the connection to the stability condition of the density evolution.
Minimum distance is an important parameter of a linear error correcting code. For improved performance of binary Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, we need to have the minimum distance grow fast with n, the codelength. However, the best we can hope for is a linear growth in dmin with n. For binary LDPC codes, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the LDPC ensemble parameters, to ensure linear growth of minimum distance is well established. In the case of non-binary LDPC codes, the structure of logarithmic weight codewords is different from that of binary codes. We have carried out a p…
In this paper, we derive the average weight distributions for the irregular non-binary cluster low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles. Moreover, we give the exponential growth rate of the average weight distribution in the limit of large code length. We show that there exist $(2,d_c)$-regular non-binary cluster LDPC code ensembles whose normalized typical minimum distances are strictly positive.
Families of generalized spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (GSC-LDPC) code ensembles can be formed by terminating protograph-based generalized LDPC convolutional (GLDPCC) codes. It has previously been shown that ensembles of GSC-LDPC codes constructed from a protograph have better iterative decoding thresholds than their block code counterparts, and that, for large termination lengths, their thresholds coincide with the maximum a-posteriori (MAP) decoding threshold of the underlying generalized LDPC block code ensemble. Here we show that, in addition to their excellent iterative decodi…
Irregular repeat-accumulate Root-Check LDPC codes based on Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) techniques for block-fading channels are proposed. The proposed Root-Check LDPC codes are {both suitable for channels under $F = 2, 3$ independent fadings per codeword and} for fast fading channels. An IRA(A) Root-Check structure is devised for $F = 2, 3$ independent fadings. The performance of the new codes is investigated in terms of the Frame Error Rate (FER). Numerical results show that the IRAA LDPC codes constructed by the proposed algorithm {outperform by about 1dB the existing} IRA Root-Check LDPC …
This short paper explores density evolution (DE) for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes at signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) that are significantly above the decoding threshold. The focus is on the additive white Gaussian noise channel and LDPC codes in which the variable nodes have regular degree. Prior work, using DE, produced results in the error floor region which were asymptotic in the belief-propagation decoder's log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values. We develop expressions which closely approximate the LLR growth behavior at moderate LLR magnitudes. We then produce bounds on the mean extrins…
In this work, we propose structured Root-Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes and design techniques for block-fading channels. In particular, Quasi-Cyclic Root-LDPC codes, Irregular repeat-accumulate Root-LDPC codes and Controlled Doping Root-LDPC codes based on Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) techniques for block-fading channels are proposed. The proposed Root-LDPC codes are both suitable for channels under $F = 2, 3$ and $4$ independent fading per codeword. The performance of the proposed codes is investigated in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER). The proposed Root-LDPC codes are capable of ach…
In this paper, we construct protograph-based spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes by coupling together a series of L disjoint, or uncoupled, LDPC code Tanner graphs into a single coupled chain. By varying L, we obtain a flexible family of code ensembles with varying rates and frame lengths that can share the same encoding and decoding architecture for arbitrary L. We demonstrate that the resulting codes combine the best features of optimized irregular and regular codes in one design: capacity approaching iterative belief propagation (BP) decoding thresholds and linear gro…
There have been lots of efforts on the construction of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with large girth. However, most of them are focused on protographs with single edges and little research has been done for the construction of QC LDPC codes lifted from protographs with multiple edges. Compared to single-edge protographs, multiple-edge protographs have benefits such that QC LDPC codes lifted from them can potentially have larger minimum Hamming distance. In this paper, all subgraph patterns of multiple-edge protographs, which prevent QC LDPC codes from having large gi…

It is shown that dominant trapping sets of regular LDPC codes, so called absorption sets, undergo a two-phased dynamic behavior in the iterative message-passing decoding algorithm. Using a linear dynamic model for the iteration behavior of these sets, it is shown that they undergo an initial geometric growth phase which stabilizes in a final bit-flipping behavior where the algorithm reaches a fixed point. This analysis is shown to lead to very accurate numerical calculations of the error floor bit error rates down to error rates that are inaccessible by simulation. The topology of the dominant…
One of the phenomena that causes high decoding failure rates is trapping sets. Characterization of $(a,b)$ elementary trapping sets (ETSs), their graphical properties and the lower bounds on their size in variable regular LDPC codes with column weights 3, 4, 5 and 6, where $a$ is the size of the ETS and $b$ is the number of degree-one check nodes, have been an interesting subject among researchers. Although progressive-edge-growth method (PEG) to construct LDPC codes free of an specific ETS has been proposed in the literature, it is mostly applied to LDPC codes with column weight 3. In this pa…
The Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) algorithm is one of the most widely-used method for constructing finite length LDPC codes. In this paper we consider the PEG algorithm together with a scheduling distribution, which specifies the order in which edges are established in the graph. The goal is to find a scheduling distribution that yields "the best" performance in terms of decoding overhead, performance metric specific to erasure codes and widely used for upper-layer forward error correction (UL-FEC). We rigorously formulate this optimization problem, and we show that it can be addressed by usin…
In this paper we analyze the performance of several bit-interleaving strategies applied to Non-Binary Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes over the Rayleigh fading channel. The technique of bit-interleaving used over fading channel introduces diversity which could provide important gains in terms of frame error probability and detection. This paper demonstrates the importance of the way of implementing the bit-interleaving, and proposes a design of an optimized bit-interleaver inspired from the Progressive Edge Growth algorithm. This optimization algorithm depends on the topological structure…
This paper investigates the design and performance of delayed bit-interleaved coded modulation (DBICM) with low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. For Gray labeled square $M$-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations, we investigate the optimal delay scheme with the largest spectrum efficiency of DBICM for a fixed maximum number of delayed time slots and a given signal-to-noise ratio. When analyzing the capacity of DBICM, we find two important properties: the capacity improvement due to delayed coded bits being mapped to the real and imaginary parts of the transmitted symbols ar…
This paper investigates the bit-interleaved coded generalized spatial modulation (BICGSM) with iterative decoding (BICGSM-ID) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communications (VLC). In the BICGSM-ID scheme, the information bits conveyed by the signal-domain (SiD) symbols and the spatial-domain (SpD) light emitting diode (LED)-index patterns are coded by a protograph low-density parity-check (P-LDPC) code. Specifically, we propose a signal-domain symbol expanding and re-allocating (SSER) method for constructing a type of novel generalized spatial modulation (GSM) constella…
To obtain a better cycle-structure is still a challenge for the low-density parity-check (LDPC) code design. This paper formulates two metrics firstly so that the progressive edge-growth (PEG) algorithm and the approximate cycle extrinsic message degree (ACE) constrained PEG algorithm are unified into one integrated algorithm, called the metric-constrained PEG algorithm (M-PEGA). Then, as an improvement for the M-PEGA, the multi-edge metric-constrained PEG algorithm (MM-PEGA) is proposed based on two new concepts, the multi-edge local girth and the edge-trials. The MM-PEGA with the edge-trials…
In this paper, we consider how to partition the parity-check matrices (PCMs) to reduce the hardware complexity and computation delay for the row layered decoding of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes. First, we formulate the PCM partitioning as an optimization problem, which targets to minimize the maximum column weight of each layer while maintaining a block cyclic shift property among different layers. As a result, we derive all the feasible solutions for the problem and propose a tight lower bound $ω_{LB}$ on the minimum possible maximum column weight to evaluate a soluti…
LDPC codes are used in many applications, however, their error correcting capabilities are limited by the presence of stopping sets and trapping sets. Trapping sets and stopping sets occur when specific low-wiehgt error patterns cause a decoder to fail. Trapping sets were first discovered with investigation of the error floor of the Margulis code. Possible solutions are constructions which avoid creating trapping sets, such as progressive edge growth (PEG), or methods which remove trapping sets from existing constructions, such as graph covers. This survey examines trapping sets and stopping s…
A popular method of improving the throughput of blockchain systems is by running smaller side blockchains that push the hashes of their blocks onto a trusted blockchain. Side blockchains are vulnerable to stalling attacks where a side blockchain node pushes the hash of a block to the trusted blockchain but makes the block unavailable to other side blockchain nodes. Recently, Sheng et al. proposed a data availability oracle based on LDPC codes and a data dispersal protocol as a solution to the above problem. While showing improvements, the codes and dispersal protocol were designed disjointly w…
A generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) code is a class of codes, where single parity check nodes in a conventional low-density parity-check (LDPC) code are replaced by linear codes with higher parity check constraints. In this paper, we introduce a new method of constructing GLDPC codes by inserting the generalized check nodes for partial doping. While the conventional protograph GLDPC code dopes the protograph check nodes by replacing them with the generalized check nodes, a new GLDPC code is constructed by adding the generalized check nodes and partially doping the selected variable …
The average weight distribution of a regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over a finite field is thoroughly analyzed. In particular, a precise asymptotic approximation of the average weight distribution is derived for the small-weight case, and a series of fundamental qualitative properties of the asymptotic growth rate of the average weight distribution are proved. Based on this analysis, a general result, including all previous results as special cases, is established for the minimum distance of individual codes in a regular LDPC code ensemble.
We propose the application of multiple-bases belief-propagation, an optimized iterative decoding method, to a set of rate-1/2 LDPC codes from the IEEE 802.16e WiMAX standard. The presented approach allows for improved decoding performance when signaling over the AWGN channel. As all required operations for this method can be run in parallel, the decoding delay of this method and standard belief-propagation decoding are equal. The obtained results are compared to the performance of LDPC codes optimized with the progressive edge-growth algorithm and to bounds from information theory. It will be …
In certain blockchain systems, light nodes are clients that download only a small portion of the block. Light nodes are vulnerable to data availability (DA) attacks where a malicious node hides an invalid portion of the block from the light nodes. Recently, a technique based on erasure codes called Coded Merkle Tree (CMT) was proposed by Yu et al. that enables light nodes to detect a DA attack with high probability. The CMT is constructed using LDPC codes for fast decoding but can fail to detect a DA attack if a malicious node hides a small stopping set of the code. To combat this, Yu et al. u…
The huge amount of data produced in the fifth-generation (5G) networks not only brings new challenges to the reliability and efficiency of mobile devices but also drives rapid development of new storage techniques. With the benefits of fast access speed and high reliability, NAND flash memory has become a promising storage solution for the 5G networks. In this paper, we investigate a protograph-coded bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative detection and decoding (BICM-ID) utilizing irregular mapping (IM) in the multi-level-cell (MLC) NAND flash-memory systems. First, we propose an enha…
In this paper, redundant random matrix ensembles (abbreviated as redundant random ensembles) are defined and their stopping set (SS) weight distributions are analyzed. A redundant random ensemble consists of a set of binary matrices with linearly dependent rows. These linearly dependent rows (redundant rows) significantly reduce the number of stopping sets of small size. An upper and lower bound on the average SS weight distribution of the redundant random ensembles are shown. From these bounds, the trade-off between the number of redundant rows (corresponding to decoding complexity of BP on B…
