Irregular repeat-accumulate Root-Check LDPC codes based on Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) techniques for block-fading channels are proposed. The proposed Root-Check LDPC codes are {both suitable for channels under $F = 2, 3$ independent fadings per codeword and} for fast fading channels. An IRA(A) Root-Check structure is devised for $F = 2, 3$ independent fadings. The performance of the new codes is investigated in terms of the Frame Error Rate (FER). Numerical results show that the IRAA LDPC codes constructed by the proposed algorithm {outperform by about 1dB the existing} IRA Root-Check LDPC codes under fast-fading channels.
We propose non-binary LDPC codes concatenated with multiplicative repetition codes. By multiplicatively repeating the (2,3)-regular non-binary LDPC mother code of rate 1/3, we construct rate-compatible codes of lower rates 1/6, 1/9, 1/12,... Surprisingly, such simple low-rate non-binary LDPC codes outperform the best low-rate binary LDPC codes so far. Moreover, we propose the decoding algorithm for the proposed codes, which can be decoded with almost the same computational complexity as that of the mother code.
In this paper, we present a method of constructing new families of LDPC block code ensembles formed by terminating irregular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Using the accumulate-repeat-by-4-jagged-accumulate (AR4JA) protograph as an example, a density evolution analysis for the binary erasure channel shows that this flexible design technique gives rise to a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates and thresholds close to capacity. Further, by means of an asymptotic weight enumerator analysis, we show that all the ensembles in this family also have minimum…
We propose a novel encoding/transmission scheme called continuous chain (CC) transmission that is able to improve the finite-length performance of a system using spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes. In CC transmission, instead of transmitting a sequence of independent codewords from a terminated SC-LDPC code chain, we connect multiple chains in a layered format, where encoding, transmission, and decoding are now performed in a continuous fashion. The connections between chains are created at specific points, chosen to improve the finite-length performance of the code str…
In wireless communications, spatial diversity techniques, such as space-time block code (STBC) and single-input multiple-output (SIMO), are employed to strengthen the robustness of the transmitted signal against channel fading. This paper studies the performance of protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with receive antenna diversity. We first propose a modified version of the protograph extrinsic information transfer (PEXIT) algorithm and use it for deriving the threshold of the protograph codes in a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system. We then calculate the decoding th…
We study fountain codes transmitted over the binary-input symmetric-output channel. For channels with small capacity, receivers needs to collects many channel outputs to recover information bits. Since a collected channel output yields a check node in the decoding Tanner graph, the channel with small capacity leads to large decoding complexity. In this paper, we introduce a novel fountain coding scheme with non-binary LDPC codes. The decoding complexity of the proposed fountain code does not depend on the channel. Numerical experiments show that the proposed codes exhibit better performance th…
This paper investigates the bit-interleaved coded generalized spatial modulation (BICGSM) with iterative decoding (BICGSM-ID) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communications (VLC). In the BICGSM-ID scheme, the information bits conveyed by the signal-domain (SiD) symbols and the spatial-domain (SpD) light emitting diode (LED)-index patterns are coded by a protograph low-density parity-check (P-LDPC) code. Specifically, we propose a signal-domain symbol expanding and re-allocating (SSER) method for constructing a type of novel generalized spatial modulation (GSM) constella…
In this work, we propose structured Root-Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes and design techniques for block-fading channels. In particular, Quasi-Cyclic Root-LDPC codes, Irregular repeat-accumulate Root-LDPC codes and Controlled Doping Root-LDPC codes based on Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) techniques for block-fading channels are proposed. The proposed Root-LDPC codes are both suitable for channels under $F = 2, 3$ and $4$ independent fading per codeword. The performance of the proposed codes is investigated in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER). The proposed Root-LDPC codes are capable of ach…
We present a new class of irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for moderate block lengths (up to a few thousand bits) that are well-suited for rate-compatible puncturing. The proposed codes show good performance under puncturing over a wide range of rates and are suitable for usage in incremental redundancy hybrid-automatic repeat request (ARQ) systems. In addition, these codes are linear-time encodable with simple shift-register circuits. For a block length of 1200 bits the codes outperform optimized irregular LDPC codes and extended irregular repeat-accumulate (eIRA) codes for all…
We propose a new code design that aims to distribute an LDPC code over a relay channel. It is based on a split-and-extend approach, which allows the relay to split the set of bits connected to some parity-check of the LDPC code into two or several subsets. Subsequently, the sums of bits within each subset are used in a repeat-accumulate manner in order to generate extra bits sent from the relay toward the destination. We show that the proposed design yields LDPC codes with enhanced correction capacity and can be advantageously applied to existing codes, which allows for addressing cooperation …
In this paper we propose a new class of spatially coupled codes based on repeat-accumulate protographs. We show that spatially coupled repeat-accumulate codes have several advantages over spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes including simpler encoders and slightly higher code rates than spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes with similar thresholds and decoding complexity (as measured by the Tanner graph edge density).
In this paper, we presented three approaches to improve the design of Kite codes (newly proposed rateless codes), resulting in an ensemble of rate-compatible LDPC codes with code rates varying "continuously" from 0.1 to 0.9 for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The new ensemble rate-compatible LDPC codes can be constructed conveniently with an empirical formula. Simulation results show that, when applied to incremental redundancy hybrid automatic repeat request (IR-HARQ) system, the constructed codes (with higher order modulation) perform well in a wide range of signal-to-noise-ra…
In this paper, we present a construction method of non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes. Our construction method is an extension of Felstroem and Zigangirov construction for non-binary LDPC convolutional codes. The rate-compatibility of the non-binary convolutional code is also discussed. The proposed rate-compatible code is designed from one single mother (2,4)-regular non-binary LDPC convolutional code of rate 1/2. Higher-rate codes are produced by puncturing the mother code and lower-rate codes are produced by multiplicatively repeating the mother code. Simulation …
We examine regular and irregular repeat-accumulate (RA) codes with repetition degrees which are all even. For these codes and with a particular choice of an interleaver, we give an upper bound on the decoding error probability of a linear-programming based decoder which is an inverse polynomial in the block length. Our bound is valid for any memoryless, binary-input, output-symmetric (MBIOS) channel. This result generalizes the bound derived by Feldman et al., which was for regular RA(2) codes.
The paper introduces ensembles of accumulate-repeat-accumulate (ARA) codes which asymptotically achieve capacity on the binary erasure channel (BEC) with {\em bounded complexity}, per information bit, of encoding and decoding. It also introduces symmetry properties which play a central role in the construction of capacity-achieving ensembles for the BEC with bounded complexity. The results here improve on the tradeoff between performance and complexity provided by previous constructions of capacity-achieving ensembles of codes defined on graphs. The superiority of ARA codes with moderate to la…
In this paper the ensemble of codes formed by a serial concatenation of a repetition code with multiple accumulators connected through random interleavers is considered. Based on finite length weight enumerators for these codes, asymptotic expressions for the minimum distance and an arbitrary number of accumulators larger than one are derived using the uniform interleaver approach. In accordance with earlier results in the literature, it is first shown that the minimum distance of repeat-accumulate codes can grow, at best, sublinearly with block length. Then, for repeat-accumulate-accumulate c…

It also introduces symmetry properties which play a central role in the construction of capacity-achieving ensembles for the BEC. The results here improve on the tradeoff between performance and complexity provided by the first capacity-achieving ensembles of irregular repeat-accumulate (IRA) codes with bounded complexity per information bit; these IRA ensembles were previously constructed by Pfis…
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are capable of achieving excellent performance and provide a useful alternative for high performance applications. However, at medium to high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), an observable error floor arises from the loss of independence of messages passed under iterative graph-based decoding. In this paper, the error floor performance of short block length codes is improved by use of a novel candidate selection metric in code graph construction. The proposed Multipath EMD approach avoids harmful structures in the graph by evaluating certain properties of the…
This work considers optimizing LDPC codes in the physical-layer network coded two-way relay channel using noncoherent FSK modulation. The error-rate performance of channel decoding at the relay node during the multiple-access phase was improved through EXIT-based optimization of Tanner graph variable node degree distributions. Codes drawn from the DVB-S2 and WiMAX standards were used as a basis for design and performance comparison. The computational complexity characteristics of the standard codes were preserved in the optimized codes by maintaining the extended irregular repeat-accumulate (e…
This paper investigates the design of low-complexity error correction codes for the verification step in continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) systems. We design new coding schemes based on quasi-cyclic repeat-accumulate codes which demonstrate good performances for CVQKD reconciliation.
Aiming at bridging the gap between the maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) and the suboptimal iterative decodings for short or medium length LDPC codes, we present a generalized ordered statistic decoding (OSD) in the form of syndrome decoding, to cascade with the belief propagation (BP) or enhanced min-sum decoding. The OSD is invoked only when the decoding failures are obtained for the preceded iterative decoding method. With respect to the existing OSD which is based on the accumulated log-likelihood ratio (LLR) metric, we extend the accumulative metric to the situation where the BP decoding …
An algebraic group ring method for constructing codes with no short cycles in the check matrix is derived. It is shown that the matrix of a group ring element has no short cycles if and only if the collection of group differences of this element has no repeats. When applied to elements in the group ring with small support this gives a general method for constructing and analysing low density parity check (LDPC) codes with no short cycles from group rings. Examples of LDPC codes with no short cycles are constructed from group ring elements and these are simulated and compared with known LDPC co…
The serial concatenation of a repetition code with two or more accumulators has the advantage of a simple encoder structure. Furthermore, the resulting ensemble is asymptotically good and exhibits minimum distance growing linearly with block length. However, in practice these codes cannot be decoded by a maximum likelihood decoder, and iterative decoding schemes must be employed. For low-density parity-check codes, the notion of trapping sets has been introduced to estimate the performance of these codes under iterative message passing decoding. In this paper, we present a closed form finite l…
This paper deals with the problem of massive random access for Gaussian multiple access channel (MAC). We continue to investigate the coding scheme for Gaussian MAC proposed by A. Vem et al in 2017. The proposed scheme consists of four parts: (i) the data transmission is partitioned into time slots; (ii) the data, transmitted in each slot, is split into two parts, the first one set an interleaver of the low-density parity-check (LDPC) type code and is encoded by spreading sequence or codewords that are designed to be decoded by compressed sensing type decoding; (iii) the another part of transm…
In this paper, we consider weighted nonbinary repeat multiple-accumulate (WNRMA) code ensembles obtained from the serial concatenation of a nonbinary rate-1/n repeat code and the cascade of L>= 1 accumulators, where each encoder is followed by a nonbinary random weighter. The WNRMA codes are assumed to be iteratively decoded using the turbo principle with maximum a posteriori constituent decoders. We derive the exact weight enumerator of nonbinary accumulators and subsequently give the weight enumerators for WNRMA code ensembles. We formally prove that the symbol-wise minimum distance of WNRMA…
This paper is focused on the performance analysis of binary linear block codes (or ensembles) whose transmission takes place over independent and memoryless parallel channels. New upper bounds on the maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding error probability are derived. The framework of the second version of the Duman and Salehi (DS2) bounds is generalized to the case of parallel channels, along with the derivation of optimized tilting measures. The connection between the generalized DS2 and the 1961 Gallager bounds, known previously for a single channel, is revisited for the case of parallel channel…
State-constrained signal codes directly encode modulation signals using signal processing filters, the coefficients of which are constrained over the rings of formal power series. Although the performance of signal codes is defined by these signal filters, optimal filters must be found by brute-force search in terms of symbol error rate because the asymptotic behavior with different filters has not been investigated. Moreover, computational complexity of the conventional BCJR used in the decoder increases exponentially as the number of output constellations increase. We hence propose a new cla…
This paper presents several new construction techniques for low-density parity-check (LDPC) and systematic repeat-accumulate (RA) codes. Based on specific classes of combinatorial designs, the improved code design focuses on high-rate structured codes with constant column weights 3 and higher. The proposed codes are efficiently encodable and exhibit good structural properties. Experimental results on decoding performance with the sum-product algorithm show that the novel codes offer substantial practical application potential, for instance, in high-speed applications in magnetic recording and …
Most multi-dimensional (more than two dimensions) lattice partitions only form additive quotient groups and lack multiplication operations. This prevents us from constructing lattice codes based on multi-dimensional lattice partitions directly from non-binary linear codes over finite fields. In this paper, we design lattice codes from Construction A lattices where the underlying linear codes are non-binary irregular repeat-accumulate (IRA) codes. Most importantly, our codes are based on multi-dimensional lattice partitions with finite constellations. We propose a novel encoding structure that …
We consider Linear Programming (LP) decoding of a fixed Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) code over the Binary Symmetric Channel (BSC). The LP decoder fails when it outputs a pseudo-codeword which is not a codeword. We design an efficient algorithm termed the Instanton Search Algorithm (ISA) which, given a random input, generates a set of flips called the BSC-instanton. We prove that: (a) the LP decoder fails for any set of flips with support vector including an instanton; (b) for any input, the algorithm outputs an instanton in the number of steps upper-bounded by twice the number of flips in t…
This paper is focused on the performance analysis of binary linear block codes (or ensembles) whose transmission takes place over independent and memoryless parallel channels. New upper bounds on the maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding error probability are derived. These bounds are applied to various ensembles of turbo-like codes, focusing especially on repeat-accumulate codes and their recent variations which possess low encoding and decoding complexity and exhibit remarkable performance under iterative decoding. The framework of the second version of the Duman and Salehi (DS2) bounds is genera…
The huge amount of data produced in the fifth-generation (5G) networks not only brings new challenges to the reliability and efficiency of mobile devices but also drives rapid development of new storage techniques. With the benefits of fast access speed and high reliability, NAND flash memory has become a promising storage solution for the 5G networks. In this paper, we investigate a protograph-coded bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative detection and decoding (BICM-ID) utilizing irregular mapping (IM) in the multi-level-cell (MLC) NAND flash-memory systems. First, we propose an enha…
Structured codes based on lattices were shown to provide enlarged capacity for multi-user communication networks. In this paper, we study capacity-approaching irregular repeat accumulate (IRA) codes over integer rings $\mathbb{Z}_{2^{m}}$ for $2^m$-PAM signaling, $m=1,2,\cdots$. Such codes feature the property that the integer sum of $K$ codewords belongs to the extended codebook (or lattice) w.r.t. the base code. With it, \emph{% structured binning} can be utilized and the gains promised in lattice based network information theory can be materialized in practice. In designing IRA ring codes, …
Quantum errors are primarily detected and corrected using the measurement of syndrome information which itself is an unreliable step in practical error correction implementations. Typically, such faulty or noisy syndrome measurements are modeled as a binary measurement outcome flipped with some probability. However, the measured syndrome is in fact a discretized value of the continuous voltage or current values obtained in the physical implementation of the syndrome extraction. In this paper, we use this "soft" or analog information without the conventional discretization step to benefit the i…

In Linear Programming (LP) decoding of a Low-Density-Parity-Check (LDPC) code one minimizes a linear functional, with coefficients related to log-likelihood ratios, over a relaxation of the polytope spanned by the codewords \cite{03FWK}. In order to quantify LP decoding, and thus to describe performance of the error-correction scheme at moderate and large Signal-to-Noise-Ratios (SNR), it is important to study the relaxed polytope to understand better its vertexes, so-called pseudo-codewords, especially those which are neighbors of the zero codeword. In this manuscript we propose a technique to…
Physical-layer Network Coding (PNC) can significantly improve the throughput of two-way relay channels. An interesting variant of PNC is Analog Network Coding (ANC). Almost all ANC schemes proposed to date, however, operate in a symbol by symbol manner (memoryless) and cannot exploit the redundant information in channel-coded packets to enhance performance. This paper proposes a non-memoryless ANC scheme. In particular, we design a soft-input soft-output decoder for the relay node to process the superimposed packets from the two end nodes to yield an estimated MMSE packet for forwarding back t…
A hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) scheme based on a novel class of rate-compatible polar (\mbox{RCP}) codes are proposed. The RCP codes are constructed by performing punctures and repetitions on the conventional polar codes. Simulation results over binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channels (BAWGNCs) show that, using a low-complexity successive cancellation (SC) decoder, the proposed HARQ scheme performs as well as the existing schemes based on turbo codes and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The proposed transmission scheme is only about 1.0-1.5dB away from the channel c…
A practical rate-matching system for constructing rate-compatible polar codes is proposed. The proposed polar code circular buffer rate-matching is suitable for transmissions on communication channels that support hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) communications, as well as for flexible resource-element rate-matching on single transmission channels. Our proposed circular buffer rate matching scheme also incorporates a bit-mapping scheme for transmission on bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) channels using higher order modulations. An interleaver is derived from a puncturing order obt…
We present two sequences of ensembles of non-systematic irregular repeat-accumulate codes which asymptotically (as their block length tends to infinity) achieve capacity on the binary erasure channel (BEC) with bounded complexity per information bit. This is in contrast to all previous constructions of capacity-achieving sequences of ensembles whose complexity grows at least like the log of the inverse of the gap (in rate) to capacity. The new bounded complexity result is achieved by puncturing bits, and allowing in this way a sufficient number of state nodes in the Tanner graph representing t…
In this work, we give good concatenated code ensembles for the binary erasure channel (BEC). In particular, we consider repeat multiple-accumulate (RMA) code ensembles formed by the serial concatenation of a repetition code with multiple accumulators, and the hybrid concatenated code (HCC) ensembles recently introduced by Koller et al. (5th Int. Symp. on Turbo Codes & Rel. Topics, Lausanne, Switzerland) consisting of an outer multiple parallel concatenated code serially concatenated with an inner accumulator. We introduce stopping sets for iterative constituent code oriented decoding using max…

In this paper, we describe direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems with quadriphase-shift keying in which channel estimation, coherent demodulation, and decoding are iteratively performed without the use of any training or pilot symbols. An expectation-maximization channel-estimation algorithm for the fading amplitude, phase, and the interference power spectral density (PSD) due to the combined interference and thermal noise is proposed for DS-CDMA systems with irregular repeat-accumulate codes. After initial estimates of the fading amplitude, phase, and interference PS…
This study examines the use of nonsystematic channel codes to obtain secure transmissions over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) wire-tap channel. Unlike the previous approaches, we propose to implement nonsystematic coded transmission by scrambling the information bits, and characterize the bit error rate of scrambled transmissions through theoretical arguments and numerical simulations. We have focused on some examples of Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to estimate the security gap, which we have used as a measure of physical layer security, …
