Low-density parity-check (LDPC) coding for a multitude of equal-capacity channels is studied. First, based on numerous observations, a conjecture is stated that when the belief propagation decoder converges on a set of equal-capacity channels, it would also converge on any convex combination of those channels. Then, it is proved that when the stability condition is satisfied for a number of channels, it is also satisfied for any channel in their convex hull. For the purpose of code design, a method is proposed which can decompose every symmetric channel with capacity C into a set of identical-capacity basis channels. We expect codes that work on the basis channels to be suitable for any channel with capacity C. Such codes are found and in comparison with existing LDPC codes that are designed for specific channels, our codes obtain considerable coding gains when used across a multitude of channels.
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes are capable of achieving excellent performance with low encoding and decoding complexity. In this paper we discuss several graph-cover-based methods for deriving families of time-invariant and time-varying LDPC convolutional codes from LDPC block codes and show how earlier proposed LDPC convolutional code constructions can be presented within this framework. Some of the constructed convolutional codes significantly outperform the underlying LDPC block codes. We investigate some possible reasons for this "convolutional gain," and we also discu…
In this work, we propose structured Root-Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes and design techniques for block-fading channels. In particular, Quasi-Cyclic Root-LDPC codes, Irregular repeat-accumulate Root-LDPC codes and Controlled Doping Root-LDPC codes based on Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) techniques for block-fading channels are proposed. The proposed Root-LDPC codes are both suitable for channels under $F = 2, 3$ and $4$ independent fading per codeword. The performance of the proposed codes is investigated in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER). The proposed Root-LDPC codes are capable of ach…
In this paper, we present a method of constructing new families of LDPC block code ensembles formed by terminating irregular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Using the accumulate-repeat-by-4-jagged-accumulate (AR4JA) protograph as an example, a density evolution analysis for the binary erasure channel shows that this flexible design technique gives rise to a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates and thresholds close to capacity. Further, by means of an asymptotic weight enumerator analysis, we show that all the ensembles in this family also have minimum…
In this paper, we compare the finite-length performance of protograph-based spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes and LDPC block codes (LDPC-BCs) over GF(q). In order to reduce computational complexity and latency, a sliding window decoder with a stopping rule based on a soft bit-error-rate (BER) estimate is used for the q-ary SC-LDPC codes. Two regimes are considered: one when the constraint length of q-ary SC-LDPC codes is equal to the block length of q-ary LDPC-BCs and the other when the two decoding latencies are equal. Simulation results confirm that, in both regimes,…
We study a class of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes. We provide precise conditions guaranteeing high girth in their Tanner graph. Experimentally, the codes we propose perform no worse than random LDPC codes with their same parameters, which is a significant achievement for algebraic codes.
In this paper, we analyse asymptotically a new class of LDPC codes called Non-binary Hybrid LDPC codes, which has been recently introduced. We use density evolution techniques to derive a stability condition for hybrid LDPC codes, and prove their threshold behavior. We study this stability condition to conclude on asymptotic advantages of hybrid LDPC codes compared to their non-hybrid counterparts.
Previous work showed that polar codes can be decoded using off-the-shelf LDPC decoders by imposing special constraints on the LDPC code structure, which, however, resulted in some performance degradation. In this paper we show that this loss can be mitigated; in particular, we demonstrate how the gap between LDPC-style decoding and Arikan's Belief Propagation (BP) decoding of polar codes can be closed by taking into account the underlying graph structure of the LDPC decoder while jointly designing the polar code and the parity-check matrix of the corresponding LDPC-like code. The resulting pol…
We propose non-binary LDPC codes concatenated with multiplicative repetition codes. By multiplicatively repeating the (2,3)-regular non-binary LDPC mother code of rate 1/3, we construct rate-compatible codes of lower rates 1/6, 1/9, 1/12,... Surprisingly, such simple low-rate non-binary LDPC codes outperform the best low-rate binary LDPC codes so far. Moreover, we propose the decoding algorithm for the proposed codes, which can be decoded with almost the same computational complexity as that of the mother code.
In this paper, we propose to study and optimize a very general class of LDPC codes whose variable nodes belong to finite sets with different orders. We named this class of codes Hybrid LDPC codes. Although efficient optimization techniques exist for binary LDPC codes and more recently for non-binary LDPC codes, they both exhibit drawbacks due to different reasons. Our goal is to capitalize on the advantages of both families by building codes with binary (or small finite set order) and non-binary parts in their factor graph representation. The class of Hybrid LDPC codes is obviously larger than…
LDPC convolutional codes have been shown to be capable of achieving the same capacity-approaching performance as LDPC block codes with iterative message-passing decoding. In this paper, asymptotic methods are used to calculate a lower bound on the free distance for several ensembles of asymptotically good protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Further, we show that the free distance to constraint length ratio of the LDPC convolutional codes exceeds the minimum distance to block length ratio of corresponding LDPC block codes.
In this paper, we present a construction method of non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes. Our construction method is an extension of Felstroem and Zigangirov construction for non-binary LDPC convolutional codes. The rate-compatibility of the non-binary convolutional code is also discussed. The proposed rate-compatible code is designed from one single mother (2,4)-regular non-binary LDPC convolutional code of rate 1/2. Higher-rate codes are produced by puncturing the mother code and lower-rate codes are produced by multiplicatively repeating the mother code. Simulation …
We present a general approach to designing capacity-approaching high-girth low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes that are friendly to hardware implementation. Our methodology starts by defining a new class of "hierarchical" quasi-cyclic (HQC) LDPC codes that generalizes the structure of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes. Whereas the parity check matrices of QC LDPC codes are composed of circulant sub-matrices, those of HQC LDPC codes are composed of a hierarchy of circulant sub-matrices that are in turn constructed from circulant sub-matrices, and so on, through some number of levels. We show how t…
There have been lots of efforts on the construction of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with large girth. However, most of them are focused on protographs with single edges and little research has been done for the construction of QC LDPC codes lifted from protographs with multiple edges. Compared to single-edge protographs, multiple-edge protographs have benefits such that QC LDPC codes lifted from them can potentially have larger minimum Hamming distance. In this paper, all subgraph patterns of multiple-edge protographs, which prevent QC LDPC codes from having large gi…
Low density parity check (LDPC) lattices are obtained from Construction D' and a family of nested binary LDPC codes. We consider an special case of these lattices with one binary LDPC code as underlying code. This special case of LDPC lattices can be obtained by lifting binary LDPC codes using Construction A lattices. The LDPC lattices were the first family of lattices which have efficient decoding in high dimensions. We employ the encoding and decoding of the LDPC lattices in a cooperative transmission framework. We establish two efficient shaping methods based on hypercube shaping and Vorono…
We study LDPC codes for the channel with input ${x}\in \mathbb{F}_q^m$ and output ${y}={x}+{z}\in \mathbb{F}_q^m$. The aim of this paper is to evaluate decoding performance of $q^m$-ary non-binary LDPC codes for large $m$. We give density evolution and decoding performance evaluation for regular non-binary LDPC codes and spatially-coupled (SC) codes. We show the regular codes do not achieve the capacity of the channel while SC codes do.
Families of generalized spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (GSC-LDPC) code ensembles can be formed by terminating protograph-based generalized LDPC convolutional (GLDPCC) codes. It has previously been shown that ensembles of GSC-LDPC codes constructed from a protograph have better iterative decoding thresholds than their block code counterparts, and that, for large termination lengths, their thresholds coincide with the maximum a-posteriori (MAP) decoding threshold of the underlying generalized LDPC block code ensemble. Here we show that, in addition to their excellent iterative decodi…
Product LDPC codes take advantage of LDPC decoding algorithms and the high minimum distance of product codes. We propose to add suitable interleavers to improve the waterfall performance of LDPC decoding. Interleaving also reduces the number of low weight codewords, that gives a further advantage in the error floor region.
We address the problem of constructing of coding schemes for the channels with high-order modulations. It is known, that non-binary LDPC codes are especially good for such channels and significantly outperform their binary counterparts. Unfortunately, their decoding complexity is still large. In order to reduce the decoding complexity we consider multilevel coding schemes based on non-binary LDPC codes (NB-LDPC-MLC schemes) over smaller fields. The use of such schemes gives us a reasonable gain in complexity. At the same time the performance of NB-LDPC-MLC schemes is practically the same as th…
Density evolution (DE) is one of the most powerful analytical tools for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on memoryless binary-input/symmetric-output channels. The case of non-symmetric channels is tackled either by the LDPC coset code ensemble (a channel symmetrizing argument) or by the generalized DE for linear codes on non-symmetric channels. Existing simulations show that the bit error rate performances of these two different approaches are nearly identical. This paper explains this phenomenon by proving that as the minimum check node degree $d_c$ becomes sufficiently large, the perfor…
We analyze the asymptotic performance of nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group, when the transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. We propose an efficient method to derive an upper bound to the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) threshold for nonbinary LDPC codes, and observe that the MAP performance of regular LDPC codes improves with the alphabet size. We then consider nonbinary SC-LDPC codes. We show that the same threshold saturation effect experienced by binary SC-LDPC codes occurs for the nonbinary codes…
The relation between parity-check matrices of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and biadjacency matrices of bipartite graphs supports searching for powerful LDPC block codes. Using the principle of tailbiting, compact representations of bipartite graphs based on convolutional codes can be found. Bounds on the girth and the minimum distance of LDPC block codes constructed in such a way are discussed. Algorithms for searching iteratively for LDPC block codes with large girth and for determining their minimum distance are presented. Constructions based on all-ones matrices, …
In [1] a syndrome counting based upper bound on the minimum distance of regular binary LDPC codes is given. In this paper we extend the bound to the case of irregular and generalized LDPC codes over GF(q). The comparison to the lower bound for LDPC codes over GF(q) and to the upper bound for non-binary codes is done. The new bound is shown to lie under the Gilbert-Varshamov bound at high rates.
In this paper we present a thorough analysis of non binary LDPC codes over the binary erasure channel. First, the decoding of non binary LDPC codes is investigated. The proposed algorithm performs on-the-fly decoding, i.e. it starts decoding as soon as the first symbols are received, which generalizes the erasure decoding of binary LDPC codes. Next, we evaluate the asymptotical performance of ensembles of non binary LDPC codes, by using the density evolution method. Density evolution equations are derived by taking into consideration both the irregularity of the bipartite graph and the probabi…
In this correspondence, we study the minimum pseudo-weight and minimum pseudo-codewords of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes under linear programming (LP) decoding. First, we show that the lower bound of Kelly, Sridhara, Xu and Rosenthal on the pseudo-weight of a pseudo-codeword of an LDPC code with girth greater than 4 is tight if and only if this pseudo-codeword is a real multiple of a codeword. Then, we show that the lower bound of Kashyap and Vardy on the stopping distance of an LDPC code is also a lower bound on the pseudo-weight of a pseudo-codeword of this LDPC code with girth 4, an…
The multi-edge type LDPC codes, introduced by Richardson and Urbanke, present the general class of structured LDPC codes. In this paper, we derive the average weight distributions of the multi-edge type LDPC code ensembles. Furthermore, we investigate the asymptotic exponential growth rate of the average weight distributions and investigate the connection to the stability condition of the density evolution.
We propose a low-complexity method to find quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check block codes with girth 10 or 12 and shorter length than those designed through classical approaches. The method is extended to time-invariant spatially coupled low-density parity-check convolutional codes, permitting to achieve small syndrome former constraint lengths. Several numerical examples are given to show its effectiveness.
In this paper, we study the performance of finite-length LDPC codes in the waterfall region. We propose an algorithm to predict the error performance of finite-length LDPC codes over various binary memoryless channels. Through numerical results, we find that our technique gives better performance prediction compared to existing techniques.
In this paper asymptotic methods are used to form lower bounds on the free distance to constraint length ratio of several ensembles of regular, asymptotically good, protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. In particular, we show that the free distance to constraint length ratio of the regular LDPC convolutional codes exceeds that of the minimum distance to block length ratio of the corresponding LDPC block codes.
Irregular repeat-accumulate Root-Check LDPC codes based on Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) techniques for block-fading channels are proposed. The proposed Root-Check LDPC codes are {both suitable for channels under $F = 2, 3$ independent fadings per codeword and} for fast fading channels. An IRA(A) Root-Check structure is devised for $F = 2, 3$ independent fadings. The performance of the new codes is investigated in terms of the Frame Error Rate (FER). Numerical results show that the IRAA LDPC codes constructed by the proposed algorithm {outperform by about 1dB the existing} IRA Root-Check LDPC …
This paper considers the optimization of multi-edge type low-density parity-check (METLDPC) codes to maximize the decoding threshold. We propose an algorithm to jointly optimize the node degree distribution and the multi-edge structure of MET-LDPC codes for given values of the maximum number of edge-types and maximum node degrees. This joint optimization is particularly important for MET-LDPC codes as it is not clear a priori which structures will be good. Using several examples, we demonstrate that the MET-LDPC codes designed by the proposed joint optimization algorithm exhibit improved decod…
In this paper, we propose new coupled codes constructed by overlapping circular spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes, which show better asymptotic and finite-length decoding performance compared to the conventional SC-LDPC codes. The performance improvement comes from the property that the proposed codes effectively split into two separated SC-LDPC codes with shorter chain length during the decoding process. We verify that the property of the proposed codes is valid in asymptotic setting via analysis tools such as the density evolution and the expected graph evolution. Ex…
We present a tree-based construction of LDPC codes that have minimum pseudocodeword weight equal to or almost equal to the minimum distance, and perform well with iterative decoding. The construction involves enumerating a $d$-regular tree for a fixed number of layers and employing a connection algorithm based on permutations or mutually orthogonal Latin squares to close the tree. Methods are presented for degrees $d=p^s$ and $d = p^s+1$, for $p$ a prime. One class corresponds to the well-known finite-geometry and finite generalized quadrangle LDPC codes; the other codes presented are new. We …
Low decoding latency and complexity are two important requirements of channel codes used in many applications, like machine-to-machine communications. In this paper, we show how these requirements can be fulfilled by using some special quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check block codes and spatially coupled low-density parity-check convolutional codes that we denote as compact. They are defined by parity-check matrices designed according to a recent approach based on sequentially multiplied columns. This method allows obtaining codes with girth up to 12. Many numerical examples of practical cod…
We propose a new code design that aims to distribute an LDPC code over a relay channel. It is based on a split-and-extend approach, which allows the relay to split the set of bits connected to some parity-check of the LDPC code into two or several subsets. Subsequently, the sums of bits within each subset are used in a repeat-accumulate manner in order to generate extra bits sent from the relay toward the destination. We show that the proposed design yields LDPC codes with enhanced correction capacity and can be advantageously applied to existing codes, which allows for addressing cooperation …
In this paper, we study the cycle distribution of random low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, randomly constructed protograph-based LDPC codes, and random quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes. We prove that for a random bipartite graph, with a given (irregular) degree distribution, the distributions of cycles of different length tend to independent Poisson distributions, as the size of the graph tends to infinity. We derive asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the expected values of the Poisson distributions that are independent of the size of the graph, and only depend on the degree distribution an…
Two upper bounds on the minimum distance of type-1 quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC LDPC) codes are derived. The necessary condition is given for the minimum code distance of such codes to grow linearly with the code length.
Spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes are sparse graph codes that have recently become of interest due to their capacity-approaching performance on memoryless binary input channels. In this paper, we unify all existing SC-LDPC code construction methods under a new generalized description of SC-LDPC codes based on algebraic lifts of graphs. We present an improved low-complexity counting method for the special case of $(3,3)$-absorbing sets for array-based SC-LDPC codes, which we then use to optimize permutation assignments in SC-LDPC code construction. We show that codes co…
This paper presents a theoretical study of a new type of LDPC codes motivated by practical storage applications. LDPCL codes (suffix L represents locality) are LDPC codes that can be decoded either as usual over the full code block, or locally when a smaller sub-block is accessed (to reduce latency). LDPCL codes are designed to maximize the error-correction performance vs. rate in the usual (global) mode, while at the same time providing a certain performance in the local mode. We develop a theoretical framework for the design of LDPCL codes. Our results include a design tool to construct an L…
Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes are an important class of codes with many applications. Two algebraic methods for constructing regular LDPC codes are derived -- one based on nonprimitive narrow-sense BCH codes and the other directly based on cyclotomic cosets. The constructed codes have high rates and are free of cycles of length four; consequently, they can be decoded using standard iterative decoding algorithms. The exact dimension and bounds for the minimum distance and stopping distance are derived. These constructed codes can be used to derive quantum error-correcting codes.
For a high-rate case, it is difficult to randomly construct good low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short and moderate lengths because their Tanner graphs are prone to making short cycles. Also, the existing high-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes can be constructed only for very restricted code parameters. In this paper, a new construction method of high-rate regular QC LDPC codes with parity-check matrices consisting of a single row of circulants with the column-weight 3 or 4 is proposed based on special classes of cyclic difference families. The proposed QC LDPC codes can be constructe…
For an arbitrary (3,L) QC-LDPC code with a girth of twelve, a tight lower bound of the consecutive lengths is proposed. For an arbitrary length above the bound the resultant code necessarily has a girth of twelve, and for the length meeting the bound, the corresponding code inevitably has a girth smaller than twelve. The conclusion can play an important role in the proofs of the existence of large-girth QC-LDPC codes, the construction of large-girth QC-LDPC codes based on the Chinese remainder theorem, and the construction of LDPC codes with the guaranteed error correction capability.
We study the performance of binary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check codes (SC-LDPC) when used with bit-interleaved coded-modulation (BICM) schemes. This paper considers the cases when transmission takes place over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN)channels and Rayleigh fast-fading channels. The technique of upper bounding the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) decoding performance of LDPC codes using an area theorem is extended for BICM schemes. The upper bound is computed for both the optimal MAP demapper and the suboptimal max-log-MAP (MLM) demapper. It is observed that this bound approa…
The peeling decoding for spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes is analyzed for a binary erasure channel. An analytical calculation of the mean evolution of degree-one check nodes of protograph-based SC-LDPC codes is given and an estimate for the covariance evolution of degree-one check nodes is proposed in the stable decoding phase where the decoding wave propagates along the chain of coupled codes. Both results are verified numerically. Protograph-based SC-LDPC codes turn out to have a more robust behavior than unstructured random SC-LDPC codes. Using the analytically cal…
LDPC codes constructed from permutation matrices have recently attracted the interest of many researchers. A crucial point when dealing with such codes is trying to avoid cycles of short length in the associated Tanner graph, i.e. obtaining a possibly large girth. In this paper, we provide a framework to obtain constructions of such codes. We relate criteria for the existence of cycles of a certain length with some number-theoretic concepts, in particular with the so-called Sidon sets. In this way we obtain examples of LDPC codes with a certain girth. Finally, we extend our constructions to al…
This paper is focused on the derivation of some universal properties of capacity-approaching low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles whose transmission takes place over memoryless binary-input output-symmetric (MBIOS) channels. Properties of the degree distributions, graphical complexity and the number of fundamental cycles in the bipartite graphs are considered via the derivation of information-theoretic bounds. These bounds are expressed in terms of the target block/ bit error probability and the gap (in rate) to capacity. Most of the bounds are general for any decoding algorithm, and…
In this paper, we propose a new design method of irregular spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes with non-uniform degree distributions by linear programming (LP). In general, irregular SC-LDPC codes with non-uniform degree distributions is difficult to design with low complexity because their density evolution equations are multi-dimensional. To solve the problem, the proposed method is based on two main ideas: A local design of the degree distributions and pre-computation of the input/output message relationship. These ideas make it possible to design the degree distribut…
The minimum pseudoweight is an important parameter related to the decoding performance of LDPC codes with iterative message-passing decoding. In this paper, we consider ensembles of periodically time-varying spatially coupled LDPC (SC-LDPC) codes and the pseudocodewords arising from their finite graph covers of a fixed degree. We show that for certain $(J,K)$-regular SC-LDPC code ensembles and a fixed cover degree, the typical minimum pseudoweight of the unterminated (and associated tail-biting/terminated) SC-LDPC code ensembles grows linearly with the constraint (block) length as the constrai…
In this paper, we have investigated the application of non-binary LDPC codes to spatial multiplexing MIMO systems with a large number of low power antennas. We demonstrate that such large MIMO systems incorporating with low-complexity MMSE detector and non-binary LDPC codes can achieve low probability of bit error at near MIMO capacity. The new proposed non-binary LDPC coded system also performs better than other coded large MIMO systems known in the present literature. For instance, non-binary LDPC coded BPSK-MIMO system with 600 transmit/receive antennas performs within 3.4 dB from the capac…
An irregular LDGM-LDPC code is studied as a sub-code of an LDPC code with some randomly \emph{punctured} output-bits. It is shown that the LDGM-LDPC codes achieve rates arbitrarily close to the channel-capacity of the binary-input symmetric-output memoryless (BISOM) channel with bounded \emph{complexity}. The measure of complexity is the average-degree (per information-bit) of the check-nodes for the factor-graph of the code. A lower-bound on the average degree of the check-nodes of the irregular LDGM-LDPC codes is obtained. The bound does not depend on the decoder used at the receiver. The st…
In this paper, we propose a non-uniform windowed decoder for multi-dimensional spatially-coupled LDPC (MD-SC-LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel. An MD-SC-LDPC code is constructed by connecting together several SC-LDPC codes into one larger code that provides major benefits over a variety of channel models. In general, SC codes allow for low-latency windowed decoding. While a standard windowed decoder can be naively applied, such an approach does not fully utilize the unique structure of MD-SC-LDPC codes. In this paper, we propose and analyze a novel non-uniform decoder to provide more…
LDPC code design tools typically rely on asymptotic code behavior and are affected by an unavoidable performance degradation due to model imperfections in the short length regime. We propose an LDPC code design scheme based on an evolutionary algorithm, the Genetic Algorithm (GenAlg), implementing a "decoder-in-the-loop" concept. It inherently takes into consideration the channel, code length and the number of iterations while optimizing the error-rate of the actual decoder hardware architecture. We construct short length LDPC codes (i.e., the parity-check matrix) with error-rate performance c…
The goal of the paper is to study specific properties of nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB LDPC) codes when used in coded modulation systems. The paper is focused on the practically important NB LDPC codes over extensions of the Galois field GF$(2^m)$ with $m \le 6$ used with QAM signaling. Performance of NB QC LDPC coded transmission strongly depends on mapping of nonbinary symbols to signal constellation points. We obtain a random coding bound on the maximum-likelihood decoding error probability for an ensemble of random irregular NB LDPC codes used with QAM signaling for specific symbo…
In this paper we design non-uniform bit-wise puncturing distributions for irregular non-binary LDPC (NB-LDPC) codes. The puncturing distributions are optimized by minimizing the decoding threshold of the punctured LDPC code, the threshold being computed with a Monte-Carlo implementation of Density Evolution. First, we show that Density Evolution computed with Monte-Carlo simulations provides accurate (very close) and precise (small variance) estimates of NB-LDPC code ensemble thresholds. Based on the proposed method, we analyze several puncturing distributions for regular and semi-regular code…
This paper considers density evolution for lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) and multi-edge type low-density parity-check (MET-LDPC) codes over the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel. We first analyze three singleparameter Gaussian approximations for density evolution and discuss their accuracy under several conditions, namely at low rates, with punctured and degree-one variable nodes. We observe that the assumption of symmetric Gaussian distribution for the density-evolution messages is not accurate in the early decoding iterations, particularly at low rates and with punctured va…
Quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes which are known as QC-LDPC codes, have many applications due to their simple encoding implementation by means of cyclic shift registers. In this paper, we construct QC-LDPC codes from group rings. A group ring is a free module (at the same time a ring) constructed in a natural way from any given ring and any given group. We present a structure based on the elements of a group ring for constructing QC-LDPC codes. Some of the previously addressed methods for constructing QC-LDPC codes based on finite fields are special cases of the proposed…
In this paper, an expression for the asymptotic growth rate of the number of small linear-weight codewords of irregular doubly-generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes is derived. The expression is compact and generalizes existing results for LDPC and generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes. Assuming that there exist check and variable nodes with minimum distance 2, it is shown that the growth rate depends only on these nodes. An important connection between this new result and the stability condition of D-GLDPC codes over the BEC is highlighted. Such a connection, previously observed for LDPC and GLDPC codes,…
In this paper, we derive the average weight distributions for the irregular non-binary cluster low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles. Moreover, we give the exponential growth rate of the average weight distribution in the limit of large code length. We show that there exist $(2,d_c)$-regular non-binary cluster LDPC code ensembles whose normalized typical minimum distances are strictly positive.
We prove that approximating the size of stopping and trapping sets in Tanner graphs of linear block codes, and more restrictively, the class of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, is NP-hard. The ramifications of our findings are that methods used for estimating the height of the error-floor of moderate- and long-length LDPC codes based on stopping and trapping set enumeration cannot provide accurate worst-case performance predictions.
