The min-sum (MS) algorithm is arguably the second most fundamental algorithm in the realm of message passing due to its optimality (for a tree code) with respect to the {\em block error} probability \cite{Wiberg}. There also seems to be a fundamental relationship of MS decoding with the linear programming decoder \cite{Koetter}. Despite its importance, its fundamental properties have not nearly been studied as well as those of the sum-product (also known as BP) algorithm.
We address two questions related to the MS rule. First, we characterize the stability condition under MS decoding. It turns out to be essentially the same condition as under BP decoding. Second, we perform a degree distribution optimization. Contrary to the case of BP decoding, under MS decoding the thresholds of the best degree distributions for standard irregular LDPC ensembles are significantly bounded away from the Shannon threshold. More precisely, on the AWGN channel, for the best codes that we find, the gap to capacity is 1dB for a rate 0.3 code and it is 0.4dB when the rate is 0.9 (the gap decreases monotonically as we increase the rate).
We also used the optimization procedure to design codes for modified MS algorithm where the output of the check node is scaled by a constant $1/α$. For $α= 1.25$, we observed that the gap to capacity was lesser for the modified MS algorithm when compared with the MS algorithm. However, it was still quite large, varying from 0.75 dB to 0.2 dB for rates between 0.3 and 0.9.
We conclude by posing what we consider to be the most important open questions related to the MS algorithm.
The objective of this paper is to minimize the energy consumption of a quantized Min-Sum LDPC decoder, by considering aggressive voltage downscaling of the decoder circuit. Since low power supply may introduce faults in the memories used by the decoder architecture, this paper proposes to optimize the energy consumption of the faulty Min-Sum decoder while satisfying a given performance criterion. The proposed optimization method relies on a coordinate descent algorithm that optimizes code and decoder parameters which have a strong influence on the decoder energy consumption: codeword length, n…
This paper investigates the behavior of the Min-Sum decoder running on noisy devices. The aim is to evaluate the robustness of the decoder in the presence of computation noise, e.g. due to faulty logic in the processing units, which represents a new source of errors that may occur during the decoding process. To this end, we first introduce probabilistic models for the arithmetic and logic units of the the finite-precision Min-Sum decoder, and then carry out the density evolution analysis of the noisy Min-Sum decoder. We show that in some particular cases, the noise introduced by the device ca…
Min-Sum decoding is widely used for decoding LDPC codes in many modern digital video broadcasting decoding due to its relative low complexity and robustness against quantization error. However, the suboptimal performance of the Min-Sum affects the integrated performance of wireless receivers. In this paper, we present the idea of adapting the scaling factor of the Min-Sum decoder with iterations through a simple approximation. For the ease of implementation the scaling factor can be changed in a staircase fashion. The stair step is designed to optimize the decoder performance and the required …
In this paper, we propose a new class of quantized message-passing decoders for LDPC codes over the BSC. The messages take values (or levels) from a finite set. The update rules do not mimic belief propagation but instead are derived using the knowledge of trapping sets. We show that the update rules can be derived to correct certain error patterns that are uncorrectable by algorithms such as BP and min-sum. In some cases even with a small message set, these decoders can guarantee correction of a higher number of errors than BP and min-sum. We provide particularly good 3-bit decoders for 3-lef…
Although the successive cancelation (SC) algorithm works well for very long polar codes, its error performance for shorter polar codes is much worse. Several SC based list decoding algorithms have been proposed to improve the error performances of both long and short polar codes. A significant step of SC based list decoding algorithms is the updating of partial sums for all decoding paths. In this paper, we first proposed a lazy copy partial sum computation algorithm for SC based list decoding algorithms. Instead of copying partial sums directly, our lazy copy algorithm copies indices of parti…
Some low-complexity LDPC decoders suffer from error floors. We apply iteration-dependent weights to the degree-3 variable nodes to solve this problem. When the 802.3ca EPON LDPC code is considered, an error floor decrease of more than 3 orders of magnitude is achieved.
We propose the first non-trivial generic decoding algorithm for codes in the sum-rank metric. The new method combines ideas of well-known generic decoders in the Hamming and rank metric. For the same code parameters and number of errors, the new generic decoder has a larger expected complexity than the known generic decoders for the Hamming metric and smaller than the known rank-metric decoders. Furthermore, we give a formal hardness reduction, providing evidence that generic sum-rank decoding is computationally hard. As a by-product of the above, we solve some fundamental coding problems in t…
In this paper, we propose a novel low complexity scaling strategy of min-sum decoding algorithm for irregular LDPC codes. In the proposed method, we generalize our previously proposed simplified Variable Scaled Min-Sum (SVS-min-sum) by replacing the sub-optimal starting value and heuristic update for the scaling factor sequence by optimized values. Density evolution and Nelder-Mead optimization are used offline, prior to the decoding, to obtain the optimal starting point and per iteration updating step size for the scaling factor sequence of the proposed scaling strategy. The optimization of t…
In this letter, we propose a two-stage design method to construct memory efficient mutual information-maximizing quantized min-sum (MIM-QMS) decoder for rate-compatible low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We first develop a modified density evolution to design a unique set of lookup tables (LUTs) that can be used for rate-compatible LDPC codes. The constructed LUTs are optimized based on their discrepancy values and a merge function to reduce the memory requirement. Numerical results show that the proposed rate-compatible MIM-QMS decoder can reduce the memory requirement for decoding by up …
A low-precision analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is required to implement a frontend device of wideband digital communication systems in order to reduce its power consumption. The goal of this paper is to present a novel joint quantizer optimization method for minimizing lower-precision quantizers matched to the sum-product algorithms. The principal idea is to introduce a quantizer that includes a feed-forward neural network and the soft staircase function. Since the soft staircase function is differentiable and has non-zero gradient values everywhere, we can exploit backpropagation and a sto…
We propose a nonuniform quantized decoder for polar codes. The design metric of the quantizers is to minimize the distortion incurred by quantization. The quantizers are obtained via dynamic programming and the optimality of the quantizer is proved as well. Simulation results show that the error correction performance degradation of the proposed nonuniform quantized decoder is less than 0.1 dB compared to conventional float-point decoders under 5-bit nonuniform quantization, outperforming previous uniform quantized decoders for polar codes significantly.
An ultra-high throughput low-density parity check (LDPC) decoder with an unrolled full-parallel architecture is proposed, which achieves the highest decoding throughput compared to previously reported LDPC decoders in the literature. The decoder benefits from a serial message-transfer approach between the decoding stages to alleviate the well-known routing congestion problem in parallel LDPC decoders. Furthermore, a finite-alphabet message passing algorithm is employed to replace the variable node update rule of the standard min-sum decoder with look-up tables, which are designed in a way that…
Codes in the sum-rank metric have various applications in error control for multishot network coding, distributed storage and code-based cryptography. Linearized Reed-Solomon (LRS) codes contain Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes as subclasses and fulfill the Singleton-like bound in the sum-rank metric with equality. We propose the first known error-erasure decoder for LRS codes to unleash their full potential for multishot network coding. The presented syndrome-based Berlekamp-Massey-like error-erasure decoder can correct $t_F$ full errors, $t_R$ row erasures and $t_C$ column erasures up to $2t…
This paper presents a method to determine a set of basis polynomials from the extended Euclidean algorithm that allows Generalized Minimum Distance decoding of Reed-Solomon codes with a complexity of O(nd).
We consider decoding of vertically homogeneous interleaved sum-rank-metric codes with high interleaving order $s$, that are constructed by stacking $s$ codewords of a single constituent code. We propose a Metzner--Kapturowski-like decoding algorithm that can correct errors of sum-rank weight $t <= d-2$, where $d$ is the minimum distance of the code, if the interleaving order $s > t$ and the error matrix fulfills a certain rank condition. The proposed decoding algorithm generalizes the Metzner--Kapturowski(-like) decoders in the Hamming metric and the rank metric and has a computational complex…
We analyze the performance of quantized min-sum decoding of low-density parity-check codes under unreliable message storage. To this end, we introduce a simple bit-level error model and show that decoder symmetry is preserved under this model. Subsequently, we formulate the corresponding density evolution equations to predict the average bit error probability in the limit of infinite blocklength. We present numerical threshold results and we show that using more quantization bits is not always beneficial in the context of faulty decoders.
In this paper, we propose a finite alphabet message passing algorithm for LDPC codes that replaces the standard min-sum variable node update rule by a mapping based on generic look-up tables. This mapping is designed in a way that maximizes the mutual information between the decoder messages and the codeword bits. We show that our decoder can deliver the same error rate performance as the conventional decoder with a much smaller message bit-width. Finally, we use the proposed algorithm to design a fully unrolled LDPC decoder hardware architecture.
A coded modulation system is considered in which nonbinary coded symbols are mapped directly to nonbinary modulation signals. It is proved that if the modulator-channel combination satisfies a particular symmetry condition, the codeword error rate performance is independent of the transmitted codeword. It is shown that this result holds for both linear-programming decoders and sum-product decoders. In particular, this provides a natural modulation mapping for nonbinary codes mapped to PSK constellations for transmission over memoryless channels such as AWGN channels or flat fading channels wit…
In this paper we study the impact of the processing order of nodes of a bipartite graph, on the performance of an iterative message-passing decoding. To this end, we introduce the concept of neighborhood reliabilities of graph's nodes. Nodes reliabilities are calculated at each iteration and then are used to obtain a processing order within a serial or serial/parallel scheduling. The basic idea is that by processing first the most reliable data, the decoder is reinforced before processing the less reliable one. Using neighborhood reliabilities, the Min-Sum decoder of LDPC codes approaches the …
The performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) is known to be limited by the presence of certain sub-graphs that exist in the Tanner graph representation of the code, for example trapping sets and absorbing sets. This paper derives a lower bound on the frame error rate (FER) of any LDPC code containing a given problematic sub-graph, assuming a particular message passing decoder and decoder quantization. A crucial aspect of the lower bound is that it is code-independent, in the sense that it can be derived based only on a problematic sub-graph and…
This paper presents a stochastic algorithm for iterative error control decoding. We show that the stochastic decoding algorithm is an approximation of the sum-product algorithm. When the code's factor graph is a tree, as with trellises, the algorithm approaches maximum a-posteriori decoding. We also demonstrate a stochastic approximations to the alternative update rule known as successive relaxation. Stochastic decoders have very simple digital implementations which have almost no RAM requirements. We present example stochastic decoders for a trellis-based Hamming code, and for a Block Turbo c…
In this paper, a new method for decoding Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, based on Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks is proposed. Due to the fact that in neural networks all procedures are processed in parallel, this method can be considered as a viable alternative to Message Passing Algorithm (MPA), with high computational complexity. Our proposed algorithm runs with soft criterion and concurrently does not use probabilistic quantities to decide what the estimated codeword is. Although the neural decoder performance is close to the error performance of Sum Product Algorithm (…
Recently, codes in the sum-rank metric attracted attention due to several applications in e.g. multishot network coding, distributed storage and quantum-resistant cryptography. The sum-rank analogs of Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes are linearized Reed-Solomon codes. We show how to construct $h$-folded linearized Reed-Solomon (FLRS) codes and derive an interpolation-based decoding scheme that is capable of correcting sum-rank errors beyond the unique decoding radius. The presented decoder can be used for either list or probabilistic unique decoding and requires at most $\mathcal{O}(sn^2)$ ope…
We propose a quantized decoding algorithm for low- density parity-check codes where the variable node update rule of the standard min-sum algorithm is replaced with a look-up table (LUT) that is designed using an information-theoretic criterion. We show that even with message resolutions as low as 3 bits, the proposed algorithm can achieve better error rates than a floating-point min-sum decoder. Moreover, we study in detail the effect of different decoder design parameters, like the design SNR and the LUT tree structure on the performance of our decoder, and we propose some complexity reducti…
In this paper we wish to introduce a method to reconstruct large size Welch Bound Equality (WBE) codes from small size WBE codes. The advantage of these codes is that the implementation of ML decoder for the large size codes is reduced to implementation of ML decoder for the core codes. This leads to a drastic reduction of the computational cost of ML decoder. Our method can also be used for constructing large Binary WBE (BWBE) codes from smaller ones. Additionally, we explain that although WBE codes are maximizing the sum channel capacity when the inputs are real valued, they are not necessar…
This paper summarizes the design of a programmable processor with transport triggered architecture (TTA) for decoding LDPC and turbo codes. The processor architecture is designed in such a manner that it can be programmed for LDPC or turbo decoding for the purpose of internetworking and roaming between different networks. The standard trellis based maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm is used for turbo decoding. Unlike most other implementations, a supercode based sum-product algorithm is used for the check node message computation for LDPC decoding. This approach ensures the highest hardware …
We investigate threshold-based multi-trial decoding of concatenated codes with an inner Maximum-Likelihood decoder and an outer error/erasure (L+1)/L-extended Bounded Distance decoder, i.e. a decoder which corrects e errors and t erasures if e(L+1)/L + t <= d - 1, where d is the minimum distance of the outer code and L is a positive integer. This is a generalization of Forney's GMD decoding, which was considered only for L = 1, i.e. outer Bounded Minimum Distance decoding. One important example for (L+1)/L-extended Bounded Distance decoders is decoding of L-Interleaved Reed-Solomon codes. Our …
In this letter, we develop an efficient linear programming (LP) decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We first relax the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding problem to a LP problem by using check-node decomposition. Then, to solve the resulting LP problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique. In addition, the feasibility analysis of the proposed algorithm is presented. Furthermore, through exploiting the sparsity and orthogonality structures of the LP problem, the computational complexity of …
The generalized Poor-Verdu error lower bound established in [1] for multihypothesis testing is studied in the classical channel coding context. It is proved that for any sequence of block codes sent over the memoryless binary symmetric channel (BSC), the minimum probability of error (under maximum likelihood decoding) has a relative deviation from the generalized bound that grows at most linearly in blocklength. This result directly implies that for arbitrary codes used over the BSC, decoder ties can only affect the subexponential behavior of the minimum probability of error.

Traditionally, multi-trial error/erasure decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes is based on Bounded Minimum Distance (BMD) decoders with an erasure option. Such decoders have error/erasure tradeoff factor L=2, which means that an error is twice as expensive as an erasure in terms of the code's minimum distance. The Guruswami-Sudan (GS) list decoder can be considered as state of the art in algebraic decoding of RS codes. Besides an erasure option, it allows to adjust L to values in the range 1<L<=2. Based on previous work, we provide formulae which allow to optimally (in terms of residual codeword…
In this paper, we analyze the error floor of column layered decoders, also known as shuffled decoders, for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes under saturating sum-product algorithm (SPA). To estimate the error floor, we evaluate the failure rate of different trapping sets (TSs) that contribute to the frame error rate in the error floor region. For each such TS, we model the dynamics of SPA in the vicinity of the TS by a linear state-space model that incorporates the information of the layered message-passing schedule. Consequently, the model parameters and the failure rate of the TS change …
This paper addresses the prediction of error floors of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with variable nodes of constant degree in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Specifically, we focus on the performance of the sum-product algorithm (SPA) decoder formulated in the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) domain. We hypothesize that several published error floor levels are due to the manner in which decoder implementations handled the LLRs at high SNRs. We employ an LLR-domain SPA decoder that does not saturate near-certain messages and find the error rates of our decoder to be lower b…
The sum-rank metric is a hybrid between the Hamming metric and the rank metric and suitable for error correction in multishot network coding and distributed storage as well as for the design of quantum-resistant cryptosystems. In this work, we consider the construction and decoding of folded linearized Reed-Solomon (FLRS) codes, which are shown to be maximum sum-rank distance (MSRD) for appropriate parameter choices. We derive an efficient interpolation-based decoding algorithm for FLRS codes that can be used as a list decoder or as a probabilistic unique decoder. The proposed decoding scheme …
We consider near maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of short linear block codes. In particular, we propose a novel decoding approach based on neural belief propagation (NBP) decoding recently introduced by Nachmani et al. in which we allow a different parity-check matrix in each iteration of the algorithm. The key idea is to consider NBP decoding over an overcomplete parity-check matrix and use the weights of NBP as a measure of the importance of the check nodes (CNs) to decoding. The unimportant CNs are then pruned. In contrast to NBP, which performs decoding on a given fixed parity-check matri…
We introduce new reliability definitions for bit and check nodes. Maximizing global reliability, which is the sum reliability of all bit nodes, is shown to be equivalent to minimizing a decoding metric which is closely related to the maximum likelihood decoding metric. We then propose novel bit-flipping (BF) decoding algorithms that take into account the check node reliability. Both hard-decision (HD) and soft-decision (SD) versions are considered. The former performs better than the conventional BF algorithm and, in most cases, suffers less than 1 dB performance loss when compared with some w…
This paper investigates a lossy source coding problem in which two decoders can access their side-information respectively. The correlated sources are a product of two component correlated sources, and we exclusively investigate the case such that each component is degraded. We show the rate-distortion function for that case, and give the following observations. When the components are degraded in matched order, the rate distortion function of the product sources is equal to the sum of the component-wise rate distortion functions. On the otherhand, the former is strictly smaller than the latte…
In this paper we explore the decision regions of Linear Programming (LP) decoding. We compare the decision regions of an LP decoder, a Belief Propagation (BP) decoder and the optimal Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoder. We study the effect of minimal-weight pseudocodewords on LP decoding. We present global optimization as a method for finding the minimal pseudoweight of a given code as well as the number of minimal-weight generators. We present a complete pseudoweight distribution for the [24; 12; 8] extended Golay code, and provide justifications of why the pseudoweight distribution alone cannot …
Protograph-based, off-the-shelf low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are optimized for higher-order modulation and quantized sum-product decoders. As an example, for the recently proposed LDPC code from the upcoming IEEE 802.3ca standard for passive optical networks (PONs), an optimized mapping of the bit channels originating from bit-metric decoding to the protograph variable nodes gains 0.4 dB and 0.3 dB at a bit-error rate of 1e-6 for shaped and uniform signaling, respectively. Furthermore, the clipping value for a quantized sum-product LDPC decoder is optimized via discretized density evo…
A successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder with limited list size for polar codes can not be analyzed as a successive cancellation (SC) decoder, nor as a maximum likelihood (ML) decoder, due to the complicated decoding errors caused by path elimination. To address this issue, an analytical tool, named as cluster pairwise error probability (CPEP), is proposed in this paper to measure the competitiveness of the correct path against the error paths in an SCL decoder. It is shown that the sum of CPEPs over error paths could be used as an indicator of the probability of correct path being elimina…
This paper proposes a "quasi-synchronous" design approach for signal processing circuits, in which timing violations are permitted, but without the need for a hardware compensation mechanism. The case of a low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder is studied, and a method for accurately modeling the effect of timing violations at a high level of abstraction is presented. The error-correction performance of code ensembles is then evaluated using density evolution while taking into account the effect of timing faults. Following this, several quasi-synchronous LDPC decoder circuits based on the off…
We are assisting at a growing interest in the development of learning architectures with application to digital communication systems. Herein, we consider the detection/decoding problem. We aim at developing an optimal neural architecture for such a task. The definition of the optimal criterion is a fundamental step. We propose to use the mutual information (MI) of the channel input-output signal pair, which yields to the minimization of the a-posteriori information of the transmitted codeword given the communication channel output observation. The computation of the a-posteriori information i…
The new 5G communications standard increases data rates and supports low-latency communication that places constraints on the computational complexity of channel decoders. 5G low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have the so-called protograph-based raptor-like (PBRL) structure which offers inherent rate-compatibility and excellent performance. Practical LDPC decoder implementations use message-passing decoding with finite precision, which becomes coarse as complexity is more severely constrained. Performance degrades as the precision becomes more coarse. Recently, the information bottleneck (I…
