In this paper we wish to introduce a method to reconstruct large size Welch Bound Equality (WBE) codes from small size WBE codes. The advantage of these codes is that the implementation of ML decoder for the large size codes is reduced to implementation of ML decoder for the core codes. This leads to a drastic reduction of the computational cost of ML decoder. Our method can also be used for constructing large Binary WBE (BWBE) codes from smaller ones. Additionally, we explain that although WBE codes are maximizing the sum channel capacity when the inputs are real valued, they are not necessarily appropriate when the input alphabet is binary. The discussion shows that when the input alphabet is binary, the Total Squared Correlation (TSC) of codes is not a proper figure of merit.
In this project, the behavior of Generalized Approximate Message-Passing Decoder for BSC and Z Channel is studied using i.i.d matrices for constructing the codewords. The performance of GAMP in AWGN Channel is already evaluated in the previous scientific work of Jean Barbier, therefore, this project mainly focuses on the performance of GAMP decoder for BSC and Z Channel. We evaluate the performance of the GAMP decoder for sparse superposition codes at various settings and compare the performance of decoder for different channels and parameters.
We propose a new type of short to moderate block-length, linear error-correcting codes, called moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) codes. The number of ones of the parity-check matrix of the codes presented is typically higher than the number of ones of the parity-check matrix of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. But, still lower than those of the parity-check matrix of classical block codes. The proposed MDPC codes are cyclic and are designed by constructing idempotents using cyclotomic cosets. The construction is simple and allows finding short block-length, high-rate codes with good m…
In this paper, we address the design of high spectral-efficiency Barnes-Wall (BW) lattice codes which are amenable to low-complexity decoding in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. We propose a new method of constructing complex BW lattice codes from linear codes over polynomial rings, and show that the proposed construction provides an explicit method of bit-labeling complex BW lattice codes. To decode the code, we adapt the low-complexity sequential BW lattice decoder (SBWD) recently proposed by Micciancio and Nicolosi. First, we study the error performance of SBWD in decoding the…
Although prone to fabrication error, the nanowire crossbar is a promising candidate component for next generation nanometer-scale circuits. In the nanowire crossbar architecture, nanowires are addressed by controlling voltages on the mesowires. For area efficiency, we are interested in the maximum number of nanowires $N(m,e)$ that can be addressed by $m$ mesowires, in the face of up to $e$ fabrication errors. Asymptotically tight bounds on $N(m,e)$ are established in this paper. In particular, it is shown that $N(m,e) = Θ(2^m / m^{e+1/2})$. Interesting observations are made on the equivalence …
The recent success in constructing asymptotically good quantum low-density parity-check (QLDPC) codes makes this family of codes a promising candidate for error-correcting schemes in quantum computing. However, conventional belief propagation (BP) decoding of QLDPC codes does not yield satisfying performance due to the presence of unavoidable short cycles in their Tanner graph and the special degeneracy phenomenon. In this work, we propose to decode QLDPC codes based on a check matrix with redundant rows, generated from linear combinations of the rows in the original check matrix. This approac…
Cryptographic protocols are often implemented at upper layers of communication networks, while error-correcting codes are employed at the physical layer. In this paper, we consider utilizing readily-available physical layer functions, such as encoders and decoders, together with shared keys to provide a threshold-type security scheme. To this end, we first consider a scenario where the effect of the physical layer is omitted and all the channels between the involved parties are assumed to be noiseless. We introduce a model for threshold-secure coding, where the legitimate parties communicate u…
A method is proposed, called channel polarization, to construct code sequences that achieve the symmetric capacity $I(W)$ of any given binary-input discrete memoryless channel (B-DMC) $W$. The symmetric capacity is the highest rate achievable subject to using the input letters of the channel with equal probability. Channel polarization refers to the fact that it is possible to synthesize, out of $N$ independent copies of a given B-DMC $W$, a second set of $N$ binary-input channels $\{W_N^{(i)}:1\le i\le N\}$ such that, as $N$ becomes large, the fraction of indices $i$ for which $I(W_N^{(i)})$ …

There have been significant research activities in recent years to automate the design of channel encoders and decoders via deep learning. Due the dimensionality challenge in channel coding, it is prohibitively complex to design and train relatively large neural channel codes via deep learning techniques. Consequently, most of the results in the literature are limited to relatively short codes having less than 100 information bits. In this paper, we construct ProductAEs, a computationally efficient family of deep-learning driven (encoder, decoder) pairs, that aim at enabling the training of re…
Polar codes are one of the most recent advancements in coding theory and they have attracted significant interest. While they are provably capacity achieving over various channels, they have seen limited practical applications. Unfortunately, the successive nature of successive cancellation based decoders hinders fine-grained adaptation of the decoding complexity to design constraints and operating conditions. In this paper, we propose a systematic method for enabling complexity-performance trade-offs by constructing polar codes based on an optimization problem which minimizes the complexity u…
We propose a new framework for constructing polar codes (i.e., selecting the frozen bit positions) for arbitrary channels, and tailored to a given decoding algorithm, rather than based on the (not necessarily optimal) assumption of successive cancellation (SC) decoding. The proposed framework is based on the Genetic Algorithm (GenAlg), where populations (i.e., collections) of information sets evolve successively via evolutionary transformations based on their individual error-rate performance. These populations converge towards an information set that fits both the decoding behavior and the de…
We derive the Wu list-decoding algorithm for Generalised Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes by using Gröbner bases over modules and the Euclidean algorithm (EA) as the initial algorithm instead of the Berlekamp-Massey algorithm (BMA). We present a novel method for constructing the interpolation polynomial fast. We give a new application of the Wu list decoder by decoding irreducible binary Goppa codes up to the binary Johnson radius. Finally, we point out a connection between the governing equations of the Wu algorithm and the Guruswami-Sudan algorithm (GSA), immediately leading to equality in the decod…
Understanding brain function, constructing computational models and engineering neural prosthetics require assessing two problems, namely encoding and decoding, but their relation remains controversial. For decades, the encoding problem has been shown to provide insight into the decoding problem, for example, by upper bounding the decoded information. However, here we show that this need not be the case when studying response aspects beyond noise correlations, and trace back the actual causes of this major departure from traditional views. To that end, we reformulate the encoding and decoding …
