Departing from the geodesic flow on a surface of negative curvature as a classic example of the hyperbolic chaotic dynamics, we propose an electronic circuit operating as a generator of rough chaos. Circuit simulation in NI Multisim software package and numerical integration of the model equations are provided. Results of computations (phase trajectories, time dependences of variables, Lyapunov exponents and Fourier spectra) show good correspondence between the chaotic dynamics on the attractor of the proposed system and of the Anosov dynamics for the original geodesic flow.
When a shallow layer of inviscid fluid flows over a substrate, the fluid particle trajectories are, to leading order in the layer thickness, geodesics on the two-dimensional curved space of the substrate. Since the two-dimensional geodesic equation is a two degree-of-freedom autonomous Hamiltonian system, it can exhibit chaos, depending on the shape of the substrate. We find chaotic behaviour for a range of substrates.
Geodesics deviation equation (GDE) is itroduced. In "adiabatic" approximation exact solution of the GDE if found. Perturbation theory in general case is formulated. Geometrical criterion of local instability which may lead to chaos is formulated.
This paper presents a new generator of chaotic bit sequences with mixed-mode (continuous and discrete) inputs. The generator has an improved level of chaotic properties in comparison with the existing single source (input) digital chaotic bit generators. The 0-1 test is used to show the improved chaotic behavior of our generator having a chaotic continuous input (Chua, Rössler or Lorenz system) intermingled with a discrete input (logistic, Tinkerbell or Henon map) with various parameters. The obtained sequences of chaotic bits show some features of random processes with increased entropy level…
A scheme is suggested of the parametric generator of chaotic oscillations with attractor represented by a kind of Smale-Williams solenoid that operates under a periodic sequence of pump pulses at two different frequencies. Simulation of chaotic dynamics using the software product Multisim is provided.
We propose a new method for determining the stochastic or ordered nature of trajectories in non-integrable Hamiltonian dynamical systems. The method consists of constructing a time-series from the divergence of nearby trajectories and then performing a power spectrum analysis of the series. Ordered trajectories present a spectrum that consists of a few spikes while the spectrum of stochastic trajectories is continuous. A test of the method with three different systems, a 2-D mapping as well as a 2-D and a 3-D Hamiltonian, shows that the method is fast and efficient, even in the case of sticky …
In this contribution, the motion of unitary mass test particles in a perturbed Kerr-like metric is studied using simulations in the configuration and phase space. Our metric represents the approximate exterior spacetime of a massive rotating body with mass quadrupole moment $q$. Chaotic behavior arises as the $q$ parameter increases. The rotation number is determined for an axis of symmetry in the corresponding Poincaré section. The existence of chaotic regions in the region near the source event horizon is shown.
We investigate the occurrence chaos in the escape of test particles moving in the field of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by an external halo. The motion of both material particles and zero rest mass particles is considered. The chaos is characterized by the fractal dimension of boundary between the basins of the different escapes, which is a topologically invariant characterization. We find chaos in the motion of both material particles and null geodesics.
A system of $N$ rotators is investigated with a constraint given by a condition of vanishing sum of the cosines of the rotation angles. Equations of the dynamics are formulated and results of numerical simulation for the cases $N$=3, 4, and 5 are presented relating to the geodesic flows on a two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and four-dimensional manifold, respectively, in a compact region (due to the periodicity of the configuration space in angular variables). It is shown that a system of three rotators demonstrates chaos, characterized by one positive Lyapunov exponent, and for systems of …
Complex spatiotemporal dynamics have been a subject of recent experimental investigations in optical frequency comb microresonators and in driven fiber cavities with a Kerr-type media. We show that this complex behavior has a spatiotemporal chaotic nature. We determine numerically the Lyapunov spectra, allowing to characterize different dynamical behavior occurring in these simple devices. The Yorke-Kaplan dimension is used as an order parameter to characterize the bifurcation diagram. We identify a wide regime of parameters where the system exhibits a coexistence between the spatiotemporal ch…
We deal with randomness-quantifiers and concentrate on their ability do discern the hallmark of chaos in time-series used in connection with pseudo random number generators (PRNG). Workers in the field are motivated to use chaotic maps for generating PRNGs because of the simplicity of their implementation. Although there exist very efficient general-purpose benchmarks for testing PRNGs, we feel that the analysis provided here sheds additional didactic light on the importance of the main statistical characteristics of a chaotic map, namely, i) its invariant measure and ii) the mixing constant. …
A Hamiltonian system with a modified Henon-Heiles potential is investigated. This describes the motion of free test particles in vacuum gravitational pp-wave spacetimes with both quadratic ("homogeneous") and cubic ("non-homogeneous") terms in the structural function. It is shown that, for energies above a certain value, the motion is chaotic in the sense that the boundaries separating the basins of possible escapes become fractal. Similarities and differences with the standard Henon-Heiles and the monkey saddle systems are discussed. The box-counting dimension of the basin boundaries is also …
This paper tackles Hamiltonian chaos by means of elementary tools of Riemannian geometry. More precisely, a Hamiltonian flow is identified with a geodesic flow on configuration space-time endowed with a suitable metric due to Eisenhart. Until now, this framework has never been given attention to describe chaotic dynamics. A gap that is filled in the present work. In a Riemannian-geometric context, the stability/instability of the dynamics depends on the curvature properties of the ambient manifold and is investigated by means of the Jacobi--Levi-Civita (JLC) equation for geodesic spread. It is…
An effective characterization of chaotic conservative Hamiltonian systems in terms of the curvature associated with a Riemannian metric tensor derived from the structure of the Hamiltonian has been extended to a wide class of potential models of standard form through definition of a conformal metric. The geodesic equations reproduce the Hamilton equations of the original potential model through an inverse map in the tangent space. The second covariant derivative of the geodesic deviation in this space generates a dynamical curvature, resulting in (energy dependent) criteria for unstable behavi…
In this paper, a new chaotic pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) is proposed. It combines the well-known ISAAC and XORshift generators with chaotic iterations. This PRNG possesses important properties of topological chaos and can successfully pass NIST and TestU01 batteries of tests. This makes our generator suitable for information security applications like cryptography. As an illustrative example, an application in the field of watermarking is presented.
In this paper, a new pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) based on chaotic iterations is proposed. This method also combines the digits of two XORshifts PRNGs. The statistical properties of this new generator are improved: the generated sequences can pass all the DieHARD statistical test suite. In addition, this generator behaves chaotically, as defined by Devaney. This makes our generator suitable for cryptographic applications. An illustration in the field of data hiding is presented and the robustness of the obtained data hiding algorithm against attacks is evaluated.
It is proved that the motion of a charge particle on a hyperbolic oriented two-dimensional surface in a magnetic field given by the volume form of the hyperbolic metric is completely integrable on the energy levels E < 1/2 in terms of real-analytic integrals. However it was known that on the level E=1/2 every trajectory is transitive and the restrictions of this flow onto the levels E>1/2 are Anosov flows
Agent-based models have demonstrated their power and flexibility in Econophysics. However their major challenge is still to devise more realistic simulation scenarios. The complexity of Economy makes appealing the idea of introducing chaotic number generators as simulation engines in these models. Chaos based number generators are easy to use and highly configurable. This makes them just perfect for this application.
Internet communication systems involving cryptography and data hiding often require billions of random numbers. In addition to the speed of the algorithm, the quality of the pseudo-random number generator and the ease of its implementation are common practical aspects. In this work we will discuss how to improve the quality of random numbers independently from their generation algorithm. We propose an additional implementation technique in order to take advantage of some chaotic properties. The statistical quality of our solution stems from some well-defined discrete chaotic iterations that sa…
We examine the effect of local matter on the chaotic behavior of a relativistic test particle in non-vacuum static axisymmetric spacetimes. We find that the sign of the sectional curvature in the geodesic deviation equation defined by the Riemann curvature does not always become a good tool to judge the occurrence of chaos in the non-vacuum case. However, we show that the locally unstable region ( LU region ) defined by the Weyl curvature can provide information about chaos even in non-vacuum spacetime as well as in vacuum spacetime. Since the Weyl tensor affects only the shear part of the geo…
New chaos-based communication schemes for transmission of analog and digital information are suggested. The carrier signal is produced by chaotic generator having well-defined oscillation phases at least on short time intervals. For data extraction, a special procedure of phase detection for chaotic signals is developed. An efficiency of the scheme is demonstrated by examples of coupled generators of structurally stable (robust) chaos with hyperbolic attractors of Smale-Williams and Arnold's "cat map" types. Robustness of the transmitter and the receiver makes it possible to transmit informati…
Geodesic dynamics is regular in the fields of isolated stationary black holes. However, due to the presence of unstable periodic orbits, it easily becomes chaotic under various perturbations. Here we examine what amount of chaoticity is induced in Schwarzschild space-time by a presence of an additional source. Following astrophysical motivation, we specifically consider thin rings or discs lying symmetrically around the hole, and describe the total field in terms of exact static and axially symmetric solutions of Einstein's equations. The growth of chaos in time-like geodesic motion is illustr…
Starting from Anosov chaotic dynamics of geodesic flow on a surface of negative curvature, we develop and consider a number of self-oscillatory systems including those with hinged mechanical coupling of three rotators and a system of rotators interacting through a potential function. These results are used to design an electronic circuit for generation of rough (structurally stable) chaos. Results of numerical integration of the model equations of different degree of accuracy are presented and discussed. Also, circuit simulation of the electronic generator is provided using the NI Multisim env…
Utilization of chaotic signals for covert communications remains a very promising practical application. Multiple studies indicated that the major shortcoming of recently proposed chaos-based communication schemes is their susceptibility to noise and distortions in communication channels. In this talk we discuss a new approach to communication with chaotic signals, which demonstrates good performance in the presence of channel distortions. This communication scheme is based upon chaotic signals in the form of pulse trains where intervals between the pulses are determined by chaotic dynamics of…
We discuss two properties making a deterministic algorithm suitable to generate a pseudo random sequence of numbers: high value of Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and high-dimensionality. We propose the multi dimensional Anosov symplectic (cat) map as a Pseudo Random Number Generator. We show what chaotic features of this map are useful for generating Pseudo Random Numbers and investigate numerically which of them survive in the discrete version of the map. Testing and comparisons with other generators are performed.
A spherically symmetric excitations of the Polyakov - t' Hooft monopole are considered. In the framework of the geodesics deviation equation it is found that in the large mass Higgs sector a signature of chaos occurs.
Lots of researches indicate that the inefficient generation of random numbers is a significant bottleneck for information communication applications. Therefore, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is developed to process a scalable fixed-point method for random streams generation. In our previous researches, we have proposed a technique by applying some well-defined discrete chaotic iterations that satisfy the reputed Devaney's definition of chaos, namely chaotic iterations (CI). We have formerly proven that the generator with CI can provide qualified chaotic random numbers. In this paper, th…
Excitable media are prevalent models for describing physical, chemical, and biological systems which support wave propagation. In this letter, we show that the time evolution of the medium state at the wave fronts can be determined by complicated chaotic attractors. Wave front dynamics can be controlled by initial data choice. Building on this groundwork, we show that there is a mechano-chemical analog of the Universal Turing machine for morphogenesis problems. Namely, a fixed mechano-chemical system can produce any prescribed cell pattern depending on its input (initial data). This universal …
In this work, Pseudo-Random Bit Generation (PRBG) based on 2D chaotic mappings of logistic type is considered. The sequences generated with two Pseudorandom Bit Generators (PRBGs) of this type are statistically tested and the computational effectiveness of the generators is estimated. The role played by the symmetry and the geometrical properties of the underlying chaotic attractors is also explored. Considering these PRBGs valid for cryptography, the size of the available key spaces are calculated. Additionally, a novel mechanism called 'symmetry-swap' is introduced in order to enhance the PR…
We explore the dynamical stability of the minisuperspace Hamiltonian of the Bianchi IX cosmological models, giving a gauge-invariant and unapproximated description of the full continuous dynamics, achieved through a geometrical description of the equations of motion in the framework of the theory of Finsler Spaces. The numerical integrations of the geodesics and geodesic deviation equations show clearly the absence of any "traditional" signature of Chaos, while suggesting a chaotic scattering dynamics scenario.
With the constant increase of the number of autonomous vehicles and connected objects, tools to understand and reproduce their mobility models are required. We focus on chaotic dynamics and review their applications in the design of mobility models. We also provide a review of the nonlinear tools used to characterize mobility models, as it can be found in the literature. Finally, we propose a method to generate traces for a given scenario involving moving people, using tools from the nonlinear analysis domain usually dedicated to topological analysis of chaotic attractors.
Asymmetric microcavities supporting Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are of great significance for on-chip optical information processing. We define asymmetric microcavities on topologically curved surfaces, where the geodesic light trajectories completely reconstruct the cavity mode features. The quality factors of the lossy chaotic and island modes in flat cavities can be increased by up to ~200 times by the space curvature. Strong and weak coupling between modes of very different origins occur when the space curvature brings them into resonance, leading to a fine tailoring of the cavity phot…
The exact solution to the Einstein equations that represents a static axially symmetric source deformed by an internal quadrupole is considered. By using the Poincare section method we numerically study the geodesic motion of test particles. For the prolate quadrupolar deformations we found chaotic motions contrary to the oblate case where only regular motion is found. We also study the metric that represents a rotating black hole deformed by a quadrupolar term. This metric is obtained as a two soliton solution in the context of Belinsky--Zakharov inverse scattering method. The stability of ge…
We show that Gutzwiller's characterization of chaotic Hamiltonian systems in terms of the curvature associated with a Riemannian metric tensor in the structure of the Hamiltonian can be extended to a wide class of potential models of standard form through definition of a conformal metric. The geodesic equations reproduce the Hamilton equations of the original potential model when a transition is made to the dual manifold, and the geodesics in the dual space coincide with the orbits of the Hamiltonian potential model. We therefore find a direct geometrical description of the time development of…
The recent numerical results of Dubeibe et al. [arXiv:1812.08663] were interpreted as hinting at the existence of a fourth constant of motion (Carter's constant) for geodesics on Chazy-Curzon spacetimes. Here we show that, to the contrary, the geodesic dynamics of the single-particle Chazy-Curzon spacetime exhibit features of a non-integrable system: chaotic orbits in the meridian plane, and Birkhoff chains in the surface of section. Thus, one should not expect Liouville-integrability, nor a fourth constant, for this system.
Central Pattern Generators (CPGs) in invertebrates are comprised of networks of neurons in which every neuron has reciprocal connections to other members of the CPG. This is a ``closed'' network topology. An ``open'' topology, where one or more neurons receives input but does not send output to other member neurons, is not found in these CPGs. In this paper we investigate a possible reason for this topological structure using the ability to perform a biological functional task as a measure of the efficacy of the network. When the CPG is composed of model neurons which exhibit regular membrane …
Two entropic dynamical models are considered. The geometric structure of the statistical manifolds underlying these models is studied. It is found that in both cases, the resulting metric manifolds are negatively curved. Moreover, the geodesics on each manifold are described by hyperbolic trajectories. A detailed analysis based on the Jacobi equation for geodesic spread is used to show that the hyperbolicity of the manifolds leads to chaotic exponential instability. A comparison between the two models leads to a relation among statistical curvature, stability of geodesics and relative entropy-…
The concept of lumped optical nanoelements (or metactronics), wherein nanometer-scale structures act as nanoinductors, nanocapacitors and nanoresistors, has attracted a great deal of attention as a simple toolbox for engineering different nanophotonic devices in analogy with microelectronics. While recent studies of the topic have been predominantly focused on linear functionalities, nonlinear dynamics in microelectronic devices plays a crucial role and provides a majority of functions, employed in modern applications. Here, we extend the metactronics paradigm and add nonlinear dynamical modal…
This paper deals with the problem of analytically computing the largest Lyapunov exponent for many degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems. This aim is succesfully reached within a theoretical framework that makes use of a geometrization of newtonian dynamics in the language of Riemannian geometry. A new point of view about the origin of chaos in these systems is obtained independently of homoclinic intersections. Chaos is here related to curvature fluctuations of the manifolds whose geodesics are natural motions and is described by means of Jacobi equation for geodesic spread. Under general co…
Recurrence analysis is a well settled method allowing to discern chaos from order, and determinism from noise. We apply this tool to study time series representing geodesic and inspiraling motion of a test particle in a deformed Kerr spacetime, when deterministic chaos and different levels of stochastic noise are present. In particular, we suggest a recurrence-based criterion to reveal whether the time series comes from a deterministic source and find a noise-level threshold of its applicability.
Time-independent Hamiltonian flows are viewed as geodesic flows in a curved manifold, so that the onset of chaos hinges on properties of the curvature two-form entering into the Jacobi equation. Attention focuses on ensembles of orbit segments evolved in 2-D potentials, examining how various orbital properties correlate with the mean value and dispersion, <K> and k, of the trace K of the curvature. Unlike most analyses, which have attributed chaos to negative curvature, this work exploits the fact that geodesics can be chaotic even if K is everywhere positive, chaos arising as a parameteric in…
Designing a pseudorandom number generator (PRNG) is a difficult and complex task. Many recent works have considered chaotic functions as the basis of built PRNGs: the quality of the output would indeed be an obvious consequence of some chaos properties. However, there is no direct reasoning that goes from chaotic functions to uniform distribution of the output. Moreover, embedding such kind of functions into a PRNG does not necessarily allow to get a chaotic output, which could be required for simulating some chaotic behaviors. In a previous work, some of the authors have proposed the idea of …

We continue the study of time-like geodesic dynamics in exact static, axially and reflection symmetric space-times describing the fields of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by thin discs or rings. In the previous paper, the rise (and decline) of geodesic chaos with ring/disc mass and position and with test particle energy was revealed on Poincaré sections, on time series of position or velocity and their power spectra, and on time evolution of the orbital `latitudinal action'. In agreement with the KAM theory of nearly integrable dynamical systems and with the results observed in similar …
We analyze the Bianchi IX dynamics (Mixmaster) in view of its stochastic properties; in the present paper we address either the original approach due to Belinski, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz (BKL) as well as a Hamiltonian one relying on the Arnowitt--Deser--Misner (ADM) reduction. We compare these two frameworks and show how the BKL map is related to the geodesic flow associated with the ADM dynamics. In particular, the link existing between the \textit{anisotropy parameters} and the \textit{Kasner indices} is outlined.
This thesis studies instabilities and singularities in a geometrical approach to the planar 3-body problem as well as instabilities, chaos and ergodicity in the 3-rotor problem. Trajectories of the planar 3-body problem are expressed as geodesics of the Jacobi-Maupertuis (JM) metric on the configuration space $C^3$. Translation, rotation and scaling isometries lead to reduced dynamics on quotients of $C^3$ that encode information on the full dynamics. Riemannian submersions are used to find the quotient metrics and to show that the geodesic formulation regularizes collisions for the $1/r^2$ bu…
Chaotic systems, presenting complex and non-reproducible dynamics, may be found in nature from the interaction between planets to the evolution of the weather, but can also be tailored using current technologies for advanced signal processing. However, the realization of chaotic signal generators remains challenging, due to the involved dynamics of the underlying physics. In this paper, we experimentally and numerically present a disruptive approach to generate a chaotic signal from a micromechanical resonator. This technique overcomes the long-established complexity of controlling the bucklin…
We continue the study of time-like geodesic dynamics in exact static, axially and reflection symmetric space-times describing the fields of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by thin discs or rings. In the first paper of this series, the rise (and decline) of geodesic chaos with ring/disc mass and position and with test particle energy was revealed on Poincaré sections and on time series of position or velocity and their power spectra. In the second paper we compared these results with those obtained by two recurrence methods, focusing on "sticky" orbits whose different parts show different…
Translating the dynamics of the Henon--Heiles hamiltonian as a geodesic flow on a Finsler manifold, we obtain a local and synthetic Geometric Indicator of Chaos (GIC) for two degrees of freedom continuous dynamical systems. It represents a link between local quantities and asymptotic behaviour of orbits giving a strikingly evident, one-to-one, correspondence between geometry and instability.
This study proposes a pseudo random number generator of q-Gaussian random variables for a range of q values, -infinity < q < 3, based on deterministic chaotic map dynamics. Our method consists of chaotic maps on the unit circle and map dynamics based on the piecewise linear map. We perform the q-Gaussian random number generator for several values of q and conduct both Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) and Anderson-Darling (AD) tests. The q-Gaussian samples generated by our proposed method pass the KS test at more than 5% significance level for values of q ranging from -1.0 to 2.7, while they pass the AD…
By identifying Hamiltonian flows with geodesic flows of suitably chosen Riemannian manifolds, it is possible to explain the origin of chaos in classical Newtonian dynamics and to quantify its strength. There are several possibilities to geometrize Newtonian dynamics under the action of conservative potentials and the hitherto investigated ones provide consistent results. However, it has been recently argued that endowing configuration space with the Jacobi metric is inappropriate to consistently describe the stability/instability properties of Newtonian dynamics because of the non-affine param…

We conduct a theoretical study of the nonlinear optical response of a two-dimensional semi-conductor quantum dot supercrystal subjected to a quasi-resonant continuous wave excitation. Aconstituent quantum dot is odeled as a three-level ladder-like system (comprising the ground, theone-exciton, and the bi-exction states). To study the stationary response of the supercrystal, wepropose an exact linear parametric method of solving the nonlinear steady-state problem, whileto address the supercrystal optical dynamics qualitatively, we put forward a novel method to cal-culate the bifurcation diagram…
In this paper we discuss some general aspects of the so-called "geometrodynamical approach" (GDA) to Chaos and present some results obtained within this framework. In order to support the claim that the GDA isn't simply a mere re-transcription of the usual dynamics, but instead can give various hints on the understanding of the qualitative behaviour of dynamical systems (DS's), we then compare, from a formal point of view, the tools used within the usual framework of Hamiltonian dynamics to detect the presence of Chaos with the corresponding ones used within the GDA, i.e., the tangent dynamics…
