We report a new result of the temperature-dependent average energy expended per electron-hole (e-h) pair, $\varepsilon$, for germanium detectors. Applying energy partition mechanism in ionization for a given energy deposition, the Fano factor and the value of $\varepsilon$ can be determined separately. Subsequently, we illustrate the variation of $\varepsilon$ as a function of temperature. The impact of $\varepsilon$ on the energy threshold and energy scale for germanium detectors at a given temperature is evaluated. We demonstrate an absolute energy scale function of low-energy recoils for germanium detectors in the direct detection of dark matter particles.
The ultralow detection threshold, ultralow intrinsic background, and excellent energy resolution of p-type point-contact germanium detector are important for rare-event searches, in particular for the detection of direct dark matter interactions, coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, and neutrinoless double beta decay. Anomalous bulk events with an extremely fast rise time are observed in the CDEX-1B detector. We report a method of extracting fast bulk events from bulk events using a pulse shape simulation and reconstructed source experiment signature. Calibration data and the distribu…
The detection of low-energy deposition in the range of sub-eV through ionization using germanium (Ge) with a bandgap of $\sim$0.7 eV requires internal amplification of charge signal. This can be achieved through high electric field which accelerates charge carriers to generate more charge carriers. The minimum electric field required to generate internal charge amplification is derived for different temperatures. A point contact Ge detector provides extremely high electric field in proximity to the point contact. We show the development of a planar point contact detector and its performance. T…

For the first time, planar high-purity germanium detectors with thin amorphous germanium contacts were successfully operated directly in liquid nitrogen and liquid argon in a cryostat at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physics in Munich. The detectors were fabricated at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of South Dakota, using crystals grown at the University of South Dakota. They survived long-distance transportation and multiple thermal cycles in both cryogenic liquids and showed reasonable leakage currents and spectroscopic performance. Also discussed are the pros and…
This article reports the characterization of two High Purity Germanium detectors performed by extracting and comparing their efficiencies using experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations. The efficiencies were calculated for pointlike $γ$-ray sources as well as for extended calibration sources. Characteristics of the detectors such as energy linearity, energy resolution, and full energy peak efficiencies are reported from measurements performed on surface laboratories. The detectors will be deployed in a $γ$-ray assay facility that will be located in the first underground laboratory in Mexi…
X-rays spectroscopy experiments at synchrotron facilities were limited for many years by the maximum input-count rate and the signal-to-background ratio of germanium fluorescence detectors. These limitations are related to the germanium semiconductor device, the sensor configuration and its response to the incident X-ray flux at different energies. In order to understand and quantify such limitations, physics simulation of the detector response is a powerful tool to provide guidelines for designing, prototyping and improving detectors, as well as modelling experimental environments, which redu…
A novel Compton Scanner setup has been built, commissioned and operated at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics in Munich to collect pulses from bulk events in high-purity germanium detectors for pulse shape studies. In this fully automated setup, the detector under test is irradiated from the top with 661.660 keV gammas, some of which Compton scatter inside the detector. The interaction points in the detector can be reconstructed when the scattered gammas are detected with a pixelated camera placed at the side of the detector. The wide range of accepted Compton angles results in shorter measu…
High-purity germanium (HPGe) crystals are required to be well-characterized before being fabricated into Ge detectors. The characterization of HPGe crystals is often performed with the Hall Effect system, which measures the carrier concentration, the Hall mobility, and the electrical resistivity. The reported values have a strong dependence on the size of the ohmic contacts and the geometry of the samples used in conducting the Hall Effect measurements. We conduct a systematic study using four samples cut from the same location in a HPGe crystal made into different sized ohmic contacts or diff…
We explore the possibility to use advanced germanium (Ge) detectors as a low-energy solar neutrino observatory by means of neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering. A Ge detector utilizing internal charge amplification for the charge carriers created by the ionization of impurities is a novel technology with experimental sensitivity for detecting low-energy solar neutrinos. Ge internal charge amplification (GeICA) will amplify the charge carriers induced by neutrino interacting with Ge atoms through emission of phonons. It is those phonons that will create charge carriers through the ionization of …
Development of a new Front End electronics in Silicon and Silicon-Germanium technology for the Resistive Plate Chamber detector for high rate experiments
Intense fluxes of reactor antineutrinos offer a unique possibility to probe the fully coherent character of elastic neutrino scattering off atomic nuclei. In this regard, detectors face the challenge to register tiny recoil energies of a few keV at the maximum. The CONUS experiment was installed in 17.1 m distance from the reactor core of the nuclear power plant in Brokdorf, Germany, and was designed to detect this neutrino interaction channel by using four 1 kg-sized point contact germanium detectors with sub-keV energy thresholds. This report describes the unique specifications addressed to …

Isotopically modified Ge detectors for {\sc Gerda}: from production to operation
\textsc{Gerda}实验通过新颖的脉冲形状鉴别(PSD)技术来搜索无中微子双β($0νβ$ β $) decay of $ ^{76} $Ge using high-purity germanium detectors made of material enriched in $ ^{76} $Ge. For Phase II of the experiment a sensitivity for the half life $ T_{1/2} ^{0ν}\,\,\sim 2 \cdot 10^{26} $ yr is envisioned. Modified Broad Energy Germanium detectors (BEGe) with thick n$ ^+ $ electrodes provide the capability to efficiently identify and reject background events, while keeping a large acceptance for the $ 0νβ $beta$ -衰变信号。生产厚窗口BEGe型探测器的\textsc{Gerda}实验的可行性证明了通过测试所有的生产步骤,从采购的同位素改性锗工作BEGe探测器。对\textsc{Gerda} Phase II原型BEGe探测器的光谱…
We present a convolutional autoencoder to denoise pulses from a p-type point contact high-purity germanium detector similar to those used in several rare event searches. While we focus on training procedures that rely on detailed detector physics simulations, we also present implementations requiring only noisy detector pulses to train the model. We validate our autoencoder on both simulated data and calibration data from an $^{241}$Am source, the latter of which is used to show that the denoised pulses are statistically compatible with data pulses. We demonstrate that our denoising method is …
The Edelweiss collaboration performs light Dark Matter (DM) particles searches with germanium bolometer collecting charge and phonon signals. Thanks to the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke (NTL) effect, a RMS resolution of 4.46 electron-hole pairs was obtained on a massive (200g) germanium detector instrumented with a NbSi Transition Edge Sensor (TES) operated underground at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM). This sensitivity made possible a search for WIMP using the Migdal effect down to 32 MeV/C$^{2}$ and exclude cross-sections down to 10$^{-29}$ cm$^2$. It is the first measurement in cryogeni…
The EDELWEISS collaboration has performed a search for Dark Matter (DM) particles interacting with electrons using a 33.4 g Ge cryogenic detector operated underground at the LSM. A charge resolution of 0.53 electron-hole pairs (RMS) has been achieved using the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke amplification with a bias of 78 V. We set the first Ge-based constraints on sub-MeV/c$^{2}$ DM particles interacting with electrons, as well as on dark photons down to 1 eV/c$^2$. These are competitive with other searches. In particular, new limits are set on the kinetic mixing of dark photon DM in a so far unconstr…
