We describe how Lie groupoids are used in singular analysis, index theory and non-commutative geometry and give a brief overview of the theory. We also expose groupoid proofs of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and discuss the Baum-Connes conjecture for Lie groupoids. With the help of the general framework of Lie groupoids and related structures we survey recent progress on problems which were outside the scope of the original work of Atiyah and Singer. This includes the Atiyah-Singer type index problem for many classes of non-compact manifolds (e.g. manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity). We also consider generalizations of the pseudodifferential calculus on Lie groupoids, e.g. for boundary value problems.
The quantum Heisenberg manifolds are noncommutive manifolds constructed by M. Rieffel as strict deformation quantizations of Heisenberg manifolds and have been studied by various authors. Rieffel constructed the quantum Heisenberg manifolds as the generalized fixed-point algebras of certain crossed product $C^*$-algebras, and they also can be realized as crossed products of $C(\mathbb{T}^2)$ by Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules in the sense of Abadie et al. In this paper, we describe how the quantum Heisenberg manifolds can also be realized as twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras.
We define an analytical index map and a topological index map for conical pseudomanifolds. These constructions generalize the analogous constructions used by Atiyah and Singer in the proof of their topological index theorem for a smooth, compact manifold $M$. A main ingredient is a non-commutative algebra that plays in our setting the role of $C_0(T^*M)$. We prove a Thom isomorphism between non-commutative algebras which gives a new example of wrong way functoriality in $K$-theory. We then give a new proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem using deformation groupoids and show how it generaliz…
We build a longitudinally smooth differentiable groupoid associated to any manifold with corners. The pseudodifferential calculus on this groupoid coincides with the pseudodifferential calculus of Melrose (also called b-calculus). We also define an algebra of rapidly decreasing functions on this groupoid; it contains the kernels of the smoothing operators of the (small) b-calculus.
For a smooth manifold with boundary we construct a semigroupoid and a continuous field of C*-algebras which extend Connes' construction of the tangent groupoid. We show the asymptotic multiplicativity of \hbar-scaled truncated pseudodifferential operators with smoothing symbols and compute the K-theory of the associated symbol algebra.
This paper collects the notes of a serie of lectures given by the two authors during the summer school "Geometric and topological methods for Quantum Field Theory" at Villa de Leyva, Colombia, summer 2007. These lecture notes are mainly devoted to a proof using groupoids and $KK$-theory of Atiyah-Singer index theorem on compact smooth manifolds. We will present an elementary introduction to groupoids, $C^*$-algebras, $KK$-theory and pseudodifferential calculus on groupoids. We will finish by showing that the point of view adopted here generalizes to the case of conical pseudo-manifolds.
We introduce a blow-up construction of a smooth manifold along the singular leaves of an arbitrary singular foliation in the sense of Stefan and Sussmann, as well as a blow-up construction of the holonomy groupoid defined by Androulidakis and Skandalis. Our construction gives a locally compact locally Hausdorff groupoid, which can be regarded as a desingularisation of the singular foliation. We show that it retains some smooth structure.
This paper is concerned with pseudodifferential calculus on manifolds with fibred corners. Following work of Connes, Monthubert, Skandalis and Androulidakis, we associate to every manifold with fibred corners a longitudinally smooth groupoid which algebraic and differential structure is explicitely described. This groupoid has a natural geometric meaning as a holonomy groupoid of singular foliation, it is a singular leaf space in the sense of Androulidakis and Skandalis. We then show that the associated compactly supported pseudodifferential calculus coincides with Mazzeo and Melrose's phi-cal…
We construct the holonomy groupoid of any singular foliation. In the regular case this groupoid coincides with the usual holonomy groupoid of Winkelnkemper (1983); the same holds in the singular cases of Bigonnet and Pradines (1985) and Debord (2001), which from our point of view can be thought of as being "almost regular". In the general case, the holonomy groupoid can be quite an ill behaved geometric object. On the other hand it often has a nice longitudinal smooth structure. Nonetheless, we use this groupoid to generalize to the singular case Connes' construction of the C*-algebra of the f…
As a step toward proving an index theorem for hypoelliptic operators Heisenberg manifolds, including those on CR and contact manifolds, we construct an analogue for Heisenberg manifolds of Connes' tangent groupoid of a manifold $M$. As it is well known for a Heisenberg manifold $(M,H)$ the relevant notion of tangent is rather that of Lie group bundle of graded 2-step nilpotent Lie groups $GM$. We then construct the tangent groupoid of $(M,H)$ as a differentiable groupoid $\cG_{H} M$ encoding the smooth deformation of $M\times M$ to $GM$. In this construction a crucial use is made of a refined …
In the framework of C*-algebraic deformation quantization we propose a notion of deformation groupoid which could apply to known examples e.g. Connes' tangent groupoid of a manifold, its generalisation by Landsman and Ramazan, Rieffel's noncommutative torus, and even Landi's noncommutative 4-sphere. We construct such groupoid for a wide class of T^n-spaces, that generalizes the one given for C^n by Bellissard and Vittot. In particular, using the geometric properties of the moment map discovered in the '80s by Atiyah, Delzant, Guillemin and Sternberg, it provides a \cstar-algebraic deformation …
In this paper we generalize a theorem of M. Hilsum and G. Skandalis stating that the $C^*$- algebra of any foliation of non zero dimension is stable. Precisely, we show that the C*-algebra of a Lie groupoid is stable whenever the groupoid has no orbit of dimension zero. We also prove an analogous theorem for singular foliations for which the holonomy groupoid as defined by I. Androulidakis and G. Skandalis is not Lie in general.
This paper studies the infinitesimal structure of Carnot manifolds. By a Carnot manifold we mean a manifold together with a subbundle filtration of its tangent bundle which is compatible with the Lie bracket of vector fields. We introduce a notion of differential, called Carnot differential, for Carnot manifolds maps (i.e., maps that are compatible with the Carnot manifold structure). This differential is obtained as a group map between the corresponding tangent groups. We prove that, at every point, a Carnot manifold map is osculated in a very precise way by its Carnot differential at the poi…
We introduce singular subalgebroids of an integrable Lie algebroid, extending the notion of Lie subalgebroid by dropping the constant rank requirement. We lay the bases of a Lie theory for singular subalgebroids: we construct the associated holonomy groupoids, adapting the procedure of Androulidakis-Skandalis for singular foliations, in a way that keeps track of the choice of Lie groupoid integrating the ambient Lie algebroid. The holonomy groupoids are topological groupoids, and are suitable for noncommutative geometry as they allow for the construction of the associated convolution algebras.…
We introduce the concept of Roe C*-algebra for a locally compact groupoid whose unit space is in general not compact, and that is equipped with an appropriate coarse structure and Haar system. Using Connes' tangent groupoid method, we introduce an analytic index for an elliptic differential operator on a Lie groupoid equipped with additional metric structure, which takes values in the K-theory of the Roe C*-algebra. We apply our theory to derive a Lichnerowicz type vanishing result for foliations on open manifolds.
It is well known that a measured groupoid G defines a von Neumann algebra W*(G), and that a Lie groupoid G canonically defines both a C*-algebra C*(G) and a Poisson manifold A*(G). We show that the maps G -> W*(G), G -> C*(G) and G -> A*(G) are functorial with respect to suitable categories. In these categories Morita equivalence is isomorphism of objects, so that these maps preserve Morita equivalence.
The simplest case of a manifold with singularities is a manifold M with boundary, together with an identification of the boundary with a product M1 x P, where P is a fixed manifold. The associated singular space is obtained by collapsing P to a point. When P = Z/k or S^1, we show how to attach to such a space a noncommutative C*-algebra that captures the extra structure. We then use this C*-algebra to give a new proof of the Freed-Melrose Z/k-index theorem and a proof of an index theorem for manifolds with S^1 singularities. Our proofs apply to the real as well as to the complex case. Applicat…
Many interesting C*-algebras can be viewed as quantizations of Poisson manifolds. I propose that a Poisson manifold may be quantized by a twisted polarized convolution C*-algebra of a symplectic groupoid. Toward this end, I define polarizations for Lie groupoids and sketch the construction of this algebra. A large number of examples show that this idea unifies previous geometric constructions, including geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds and the C*-algebra of a Lie groupoid.
We characterize the groupoids for which an operator is Fredholm if, and only if, its principal symbol and all its boundary restrictions are invertible. A groupoid with this property is called {\em Fredholm}. Using results on the Effros-Hahn conjecture, we show that an almost amenable, Hausdorff, second countable groupoid is Fredholm. Many groupoids, and hence many pseudodifferential operators appearing in practice, fit into this framework. In particular, one can use these results to characterize the Fredholm operators on manifolds with cylindrical and poly-cylindrical ends, on manifolds that a…
This paper is a merge of arXiv:1807.05418 and arXiv:1808.01442. We introduce a new class of groupoids, called "boundary action groupoids", which are obtained by gluing reductions of action groupoids. We show that such groupoids model the analysis on many singular spaces, and we give several examples. Under some conditions on the action of the groupoid, we obtain Fredholm criteria for the pseudodifferential operators generated by boundary action groupoids. Moreover, we show that layer potential groupoids for conical domains constructed in an earlier paper (Carvalho-Qiao, Central European J. Mat…
We give explicit Fredholm conditions for classes of pseudodifferential operators on suitable singular and non-compact spaces. In particular, we include a "user's guide" to Fredholm conditions on particular classes of manifolds including asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, asymptotically Euclidean (or conic) manifolds, and manifolds with poly-cylindrical ends. The reader interested in applications should be able read right away the results related to those examples, beginning with Section 5. Our general, theoretical results are that an operator adapted to the geometry is Fredholm if, and only …
We present natural and general ways of building Lie groupoids, by using the classical procedures of blowups and of deformations to the normal cone. Our constructions are seen to recover many known ones involved in index theory. The deformation and blowup groupoids obtained give rise to several extensions of $C^*$-algebras and to full index problems. We compute the corresponding K-theory maps. Finally, the blowup of a manifold sitting in a transverse way in the space of objects of a Lie groupoid leads to a calculus, quite similar to the Boutet de Monvel calculus for manifolds with boundary.
Let $\widetilde{X}$ be a smooth Riemannian manifold equipped with a proper, free, isometric and cocompact action of a discrete group $Γ$. In this paper we prove that the analytic surgery exact sequence of Higson-Roe for $\widetilde{X}$ is isomorphic to the exact sequence associated to the adiabatic deformation of the Lie groupoid $\widetilde{X}\times_Γ\widetilde{X}$. We then generalize this result to the context of smoothly stratified manifolds. Finally, we show, by means of the aforementioned isomorphism, that the $\varrho$-classes associated to a metric with positive scalar curvature defined…
For any Lie groupoid $G$, the vector bundle $g^*$ dual to the associated Lie algebroid $g$ is canonically a Poisson manifold. The (reduced) C*-algebra of $G$ (as defined by A. Connes) is shown to be a strict quantization (in the sense of M. Rieffel) of $g^*$. This is proved using a generalization of Weyl's quantization prescription on flat space. Many other known strict quantizations are a special case of this procedure; on a Riemannian manifold, one recovers Connes' tangent groupoid as well as a recent generalization of Weyl's prescription. When $G$ is the gauge groupoid of a principal bundle…
We introduce and study a "desingularization" of a Lie groupoid $G$ along an "$A(G)$-tame" submanifold $L$ of the space of units $M$. An $A(G)$-tame submanifold $L \subset M$ is one that has, by definition, a tubular neighborhood on which $A(G)$ becomes a thick pull-back Lie algebroid. The construction of the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ of $G$ along $L$ is based on a canonical fibered pull-back groupoid structure result for $G$ in a neighborhood of the tame $A(G)$-submanifold $L \subset M$. This local structure result is obtained by integrating a certain groupoid morphism, using results of Moer…
We introduce and study a general pseudodifferential calculus for boundary value problems on a class of non-compact manifolds with boundary (so-called Lie manifolds with boundary). This is accomplished by constructing a suitable generalization of the Boutet de Monvel calculus for boundary value problems. The data consists of a compact manifold with corners $M$ that is endowed with a Lie structure of vector fields $\mathcal{V}$, a so-called Lie manifold. The manifold $M$ is split into two equal parts $X_{+}$ and $X_{-}$ which intersect in an embedded hypersurface $Y \subset X_{\pm}$. Our goal is…
As announced in [12], we develop a calculus of Fourier integral G-operators on any Lie groupoid G. For that purpose, we study convolability and invertibility of Lagrangian conic submanifolds of the symplectic groupoid T * G. We also identify those Lagrangian which correspond to equivariant families parametrized by the unit space G (0) of homogeneous canonical relations in (T * Gx \ 0) x (T * G x \ 0). This allows us to select a subclass of Lagrangian distributions on any Lie groupoid G that deserve the name of Fourier integral G-operators (G-FIO). By construction, the class of G-FIO contains t…
We introduce a (bi)category $\mathfrak{Sing}$ whose objects can be functorially assigned spaces of distributions and generalized functions. In addition, these spaces of distributions and generalized functions possess intrinsic notions of regularity and singularity analogous to usual Schwartz distributions on manifolds. The objects in this category can be obtained from smooth manifolds, noncommutative spaces, or Lie groupoids. An application of these structures relates the longitudinal propagation of singularities for pseudo-differential operators on a groupoid with propagation of singularities…
We study invariants associated to Smale spaces obtained from an expanding endomorphism on a (closed connected Riemannian) flat manifold. Specifically, the relevant invariants are the $K$-theory of the associated $C^*$-algebras and Putnam's homology theory for Smale spaces. The latter is isomorphic to the groupoid homology of the groupoids used to construct the $C^*$-algebras.
We prove a local index theorem of Atiyah-Singer type for Dirac operators on manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity (Lie manifolds for short). With the help of a renormalized supertrace, defined on a suitable class of regularizing operators, the proof of the index theorem relies on a rescaling technique similar in spirit to Getzler's rescaling. With a given Lie manifold we associate an appropriate integrating Lie groupoid. We then describe the heat kernel of a geometric Dirac operator via a functional calculus with values in the convolution algebra of sections of a rescaled bundle over the …
Many index theorems (both classical and in noncommutative geometry) can be interpreted in terms of a Lie groupoid acting properly on a manifold and leaving an elliptic family of pseudodifferential operators invariant. Alain Connes in his book raised the question of an index theorem in this general context. In this paper, an analytic index for many such situations is constructed. The approach is inspired by the classical families theorem of Atiyah and Singer, and the proof generalizes, to the case of proper Lie groupoid actions, some of the results proved for proper locally compact group action…

It is well known that rings are the objects of a bicategory, whose arrows are bimodules, composed through the bimodule tensor product. We give an analogous bicategorical description of C*-algebras, von Neumann algebras, Lie groupoids, symplectic groupoids, and Poisson manifolds. The upshot is that known definitions of Morita equivalence for any of these cases amount to isomorphism of objects in the pertinent bicategory.
A theorem of Muhly-Renault-Williams states that if two locally compact groupoids with Haar system are Morita equivalent, then their associated convolution C*-algebras are strongly Morita equivalent. We give a new proof of this theorem for Lie groupoids. Subsequently, we prove a counterpart of this theorem in Poisson geometry: If two Morita equivalent Lie groupoids are s-connected and s-simply connected, then their associated Poisson manifolds (viz. the dual bundles to their Lie algebroids) are Morita equivalent in the sense of P. Xu.
For a Lie groupoid G over a smooth manifold M we construct the adjoint action of the etale Lie groupoid G# of germs of local bisections of G on the Lie algebroid g of G. With this action, we form the associated convolution C_c(M)/R-bialgebra C_c(G#,g). We represent this C_c(M)/R-bialgebra in the algebra of transversal distributions on G. This construction extends the Cartier-Gabriel decomposition of the Hopf algebra of distributions with finite support on a Lie group.
We give an algebraic/geometric characterization of the classical pseudodifferential operators on a smooth manifold in terms of the tangent groupoid and its natural $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action. Specifically, we show that a properly supported semiregular distribution on $M\times M$ is the Schwartz kernel of a classical pseudodifferential operator if and only if it extends to a smooth family of distributions on the range fibres of the tangent groupoid which is homogeneous for the $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action modulo smooth functions. Moreover, we show that the basic properties of pseudodifferenti…
We construct an algebra of pseudodifferential operators on each groupoid in a class that generalizes differentiable groupoids to allow manifolds with corners. We show that this construction encompasses many examples. The subalgebra of regularizing operators is identified with the smooth algebra of the groupoid, in the sense of non-commutative geometry. Symbol calculus for our algebra lies in the Poisson algebra of functions on the dual of the Lie algebroid of the groupoid. As applications, we give a new proof of the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem for Lie algebroids and a concrete quantization …
