Extreme events such as rogue wave in optics and fluids are often associated with the merging dynamics of coherent structures. We present experimental and numerical results on the physics of extreme events appearance in a spatially extended semiconductor microcavity laser with intracavity saturable absorber. This system can display deterministic irregular dynamics only thanks to spatial coupling through diffraction of light. We have identified parameter regions where extreme events are encountered and established the origin of this dynamics in the emergence of deterministic spatiotemporal chaos, through the correspondence between the proportion of extreme events and the dimension of the strange attractor.
We study the effect of dynamical tunneling on emission from ray-chaotic microcavities by introducing a suitably designed deformed disk cavity. We focus on its high quality factor modes strongly localized along a stable periodic ray orbit confined by total internal reflection. It is shown that dominant emission originates from the tunneling from the periodic ray orbit to chaotic ones; the latter eventually escape from the cavity refractively, resulting in directional emission that is unexpected from the geometry of the periodic orbit, but fully explained by unstable manifolds of chaotic ray dyn…
For a fully chaotic two-dimensional (2D) microcavity laser, we present a theory that guarantees both the existence of a stable single-mode lasing state and the nonexistence of a stable multimode lasing state, under the assumptions that the cavity size is much larger than the wavelength and the external pumping power is sufficiently large. It is theoretically shown that these universal spectral characteristics arise from the synergistic effect of two different kinds of nonlinearities: deformation of the cavity shape and mode interaction due to a lasing medium. Our theory is based on the linear …
We demonstrate that a unidirectional coupling between a pattern forming system and its replica induces complete synchronization of the slave to the master system onto a spatiotemporal chaotic state.
We propose a model system that allows communication of spatiotemporal information using an optical chaotic carrier waveform. The system is based on broad-area nonlinear optical ring cavities, which exhibit spatiotemporal chaos in a wide parameter range. Message recovery is possible through chaotic synchronization between transmitter and receiver. Numerical simulations demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and the benefit of the parallelism of information transfer with optical wavefronts.
Spatiotemporal chaos of a two-dimensional one-way coupled map lattice is used for chaotic cryptography. The chaotic outputs of many space units are used for encryption simultaneously. This system shows satisfactory cryptographic properties of high security; fast encryption (decryption) speed; and robustness against noise disturbances in communication channel. The overall features of this spatiotemporal-chaos-based cryptosystem are better than chaotic cryptosystems known so far, and also than currently used conventional cryptosystems, such as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
Complex spatiotemporal dynamics have been a subject of recent experimental investigations in optical frequency comb microresonators and in driven fiber cavities with a Kerr-type media. We show that this complex behavior has a spatiotemporal chaotic nature. We determine numerically the Lyapunov spectra, allowing to characterize different dynamical behavior occurring in these simple devices. The Yorke-Kaplan dimension is used as an order parameter to characterize the bifurcation diagram. We identify a wide regime of parameters where the system exhibits a coexistence between the spatiotemporal ch…
A technique to forecast spatiotemporal time series is presented. it uses a Proper Ortogonal or Karhunen-Loève Decomposition to encode large spatiotemporal data sets in a few time-series, and Genetic Algorithms to efficiently extract dynamical rules from the data. The method works very well for confined systems displaying spatiotemporal chaos, as exemplified here by forecasting the evolution of the onedimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in a finite domain.
In the present letter, we introduce a new method to quantify the effect of disorder on spatiotemporal chaos [Y. Braiman, etc. Nature, 378, p465 (1995)]. Base on the autocorrelation function, we define a parameter to measure the effect of disorder. The results are intriguing and similar to the results obtained by J. Lindner etc. [J. Lindner, etc. Physics Letters A, 231, p164 (1997)]. Using this order parameter, the effect of disorder on spatiotemporal chaos in different conditions has also been discussed.
Distributions of eigenmodes are widely concerned in both bounded and open systems. In the realm of chaos, counting resonances can characterize the underlying dynamics (regular vs. chaotic), and is often instrumental to identify classical-to-quantum correspondence. Here, we study, both theoretically and experimentally, the statistics of chaotic resonances in an optical microcavity with a mixed phase space of both regular and chaotic dynamics. Information on the number of chaotic modes is extracted by counting regular modes, which couple to the former via dynamical tunneling. The experimental da…
Two types of spatiotemporal chaos exhibited by ensembles of coupled nonlinear oscillators are analyzed using independent component analysis (ICA). For diffusively coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau oscillators that exhibit smooth amplitude patterns, ICA extracts localized one-humped basis vectors that reflect the characteristic hole structures of the system, and for nonlocally coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau oscillators with fractal amplitude patterns, ICA extracts localized basis vectors with characteristic gap structures. Statistics of the decomposed signals also provide insight into the comple…
We present the results of a wavelet-based approach to the study of the chaotic dynamics of a one dimensional model that shows a direct transition to spatiotemporal chaos. We find that the dynamics of this model in the spatiotemporally chaotic regime may be understood in terms of localized dynamics in both space and scale (wavenumber). A projection onto a Daubechies basis yields a good separation of scales, as shown by an examination of the contribution of different wavelet levels to the power spectrum. At most scales, including the most energetic ones, we find essentially Gaussian dynamics. We…
By combining the one-way coupled chaotic map lattice system with a bit-reverse operation, we construct a new cryptosystem which is extremely sensitive to the system parameters even for low-dimensional systems. The security of this new algorithm is investigated and mechanism of the sensitivity is analyzed. We further apply this cryptosystem to the public channel cryptography, based on "Merkle's puzzles", by employing it both as pseudo-random-number (PN) generators and symmetric encryptor. With the properties of spatiotemporal chaos, the new scheme is rich with new features and shows some advant…
Entrainment of limit cycles by chaos [1] is discovered numerically through specially designed unidirectional coupling of two glow discharge-semiconductor systems. By utilizing the auxiliary system approach [2], it is verified that the phenomenon is not a chaos synchronization. Simulations demonstrate various aspects of the chaos appearance in both drive and response systems. Chaotic control is through the external circuit equation and governs the electrical potential on the boundary. The expandability of the theory to collectives of glow discharge systems is discussed, and this increases the p…

In this paper we show that the analysis of the dynamics in localized regions, i.e., sub-systems can be used to characterize the chaotic dynamics and the synchronization ability of the spatiotemporal systems. Using noisy scalar time-series data for driving along with simultaneous self-adaptation of the control parameter representative control goals like suppressing spatiotemporal chaos and synchronization of spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics have been discussed.
Bred vectors are a type of finite perturbation used in prediction studies of atmospheric models that exhibit spatially extended chaos. We study the structure, spatial correlations, and the growth- rates of logarithmic bred vectors (which are constructed by using a given norm). We find that, after a suitable transformation, logarithmic bred vectors are roughly piecewise copies of the leading Lyapunov vector. This fact allows us to deduce a scaling law for the bred vector growth rate as a function of their amplitude. In addition, we relate growth rates with the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents cor…
Macroscopic systems subjected to injection and dissipation of energy can exhibit complex spatiotemporal behaviors as result of dissipative self-organization. Here, we report a one and two dimensional pattern forming set up, which exhibits a transition from stationary patterns to spatiotemporal chaotic textures, based on a nematic liquid crystal layer with spatially modulated input beam and optical feedback. Using an adequate projection of spatiotemporal diagrams, we determine the largest Lyapunov exponent. Jointly, this exponent and Fourier transform allow us to distinguish between spatiotempo…
Spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky system is described by means of an infinite hierarchy of its unstable spatiotemporally periodic solutions. An intrinsic parametrization of the corresponding invariant set serves as accurate guide to the high-dimensional dynamics, and the periodic orbit theory yields several global averages characterizing the chaotic dynamics.
Synchronization of spatiotemporally chaotic extended systems is considered in the context of coupled one-dimensional Complex Ginzburg-Landau equations (CGLE). A regime of coupled spatiotemporal intermittency (STI) is identified and described in terms of the space-time synchronized chaotic motion of localized structures. A quantitative measure of synchronization as a function of coupling parameter is given through distribution functions and information measures. The coupled STI regime is shown to dissapear into regular dynamics for situations of strong coupling, hence a description in terms of …
We investigate coupled circle maps in presence of feedback and explore various dynamical phases observed in this system of coupled high dimensional maps. We observe an interesting transition from localized chaos to spatiotemporal chaos. We study this transition as a dynamic phase transition. We observe that persistence acts as an excellent quantifier to describe this transition. Taking the location of the fixed point of circle map (which does not change with feedback) as a reference point, we compute number of sites which have been greater than (less than) the fixed point till time t. Though l…
By computing 254 unstable stationary solutions of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in the extensive chaos regime (Lyapunov fractal dimension D=8.8), we find that 30% satisfy the symmetry of the time-average pattern of the spatiotemporal chaos. Using a symmetry pruning of unstable stationary solutions, the escape-time weighting average converges to the time-average pattern of the chaotic attractor as O(1/N), where N is the total number of unstable stationary solutions and unstable periodic orbits in the average.
Two-dimensional one-way coupled map lattices are used for cryptograph where multiple space units produce chaotic outputs in parallel. One of the outputs plays the role of driving for synchronization of the decryption system while the others perform the function of information encoding. With this separation of functions the receiver can establish a self-checking and self-correction mechanism, and enjoys the advantages of both synchronous and self-synchronizing schemes. A comparison between the present system with the system of Advanced Encryption Standard, AES, is presented in the aspect of cha…
Controlling spatiotemporal chaos in excitable media by applying low-amplitude perturbations {\em locally} is of immediate applicability, e.g., in treating ventricular fibrillation, a fatal disturbance in the normal rhythmic functioning of the heart. We look at a mechanism of control by the local application of a series of biphasic pulses, i.e., involving both positive and negative stimulation. This results in faster recovery of the medium, making it possible to overdrive the chaos by generating waves with frequency higher than that possible with only positive pulses. This provides the simplest…
For spatiotemporal chaos described by partial differential equations, there are generally locations where the dynamical variable achieves its local extremum or where the time partial derivative of the variable vanishes instantaneously. To a large extent, the location and movement of these topologically special points determine the qualitative structure of the disordered states. We analyze numerically statistical properties of the topologically special points in one-dimensional spatiotemporal chaos. The probability distribution functions for the number of point, the lifespan, and the distance c…
We demonstrate targeting and control over spatiotemporal chaos in an optical feedback loop experiment. Different stationary target patterns are stabilized in real-time by means of a two dimensional space extended perturbation field driven by an interfaced computer and applied in real-space to a liquid crystal display device inserted within a control optical loop. The flexibility of the system in switching between different target patterns is also demonstrated.
The spatiotemporal chaos in the system described by a one-dimensional nonlinear drift-wave equation is controlled by directly adding a periodic force with appropriately chosen frequencies. By dividing the solution of the system into a carrier steady wave and its perturbation, we find that the controlling mechanism can be explained by a slaving principle. The critical controlling time for a perturbation mode increases exponentially with its wave number.
A new strategy, namely the "clean numerical simulation" (CNS), was proposed (J. Computational Physics, 418:109629, 2020) to gain reliable/convergent simulations (with negligible numerical noises) of spatiotemporal chaotic systems in a long enough interval of time, which provide us benchmark solution for comparison. Here we illustrate that machine learning (ML) can always give good enough fitting predictions of a spatiotemporal chaos by using, separately, two quite different training sets: one is the "clean database" given by the CNS with negligible numerical noises, the other is the "polluted …
We report the first experimental evidence of a successful synchronization of spatiotemporal chaos. The experiments were performed on two unidirectionally coupled, nonlinear-optical systems of single-feedback type. The synchronization was investigated for different degrees of complexity of the spontaneous structures. In all cases, the cross-correlation between the two system states was found to increase with the strength of the coupling. Numerical simulations yield comparable results and throw a light on the role of spatial inhomogeneities, which hamper a perfect synchronization.
Using a new time-dependent measure, we demonstrate for the first time that each defect in a representative defect-mediated spatiotemporally chaotic system is associated with one to two degrees of dynamical freedom. Furthermore, we show that not all dynamical degrees of freedom are related to the defects; additional degrees of freedom are due to underlying phase turbulence. These results yield a deeper understanding of the dynamical role of defects and provide hope that these complicated systems might be reduced to simpler descriptions.
The spatiotemporal dynamics of Lyapunov vectors (LVs) in spatially extended chaotic systems is studied by means of coupled-map lattices. We determine intrinsic length scales and spatiotemporal correlations of LVs corresponding to the leading unstable directions by translating the problem to the language of scale-invariant growing surfaces. We find that the so-called 'characteristic' LVs exhibit spatial localization, strong clustering around given spatiotemporal loci, and remarkable dynamic scaling properties of the corresponding surfaces. In contrast, the commonly used backward LVs (obtained t…
A linear output feedback control scheme is developed for a coupled map lattice system. H-infinity control theory is used to make the scheme local: both the collection of information and the feedback are implemented through an array of locally coupled control sites. Robustness properties of the control scheme are discussed.
The dynamics of activation waves in excitable media can give rise to spiral turbulence, the resulting spatiotemporal chaos being associated with empirical biological phenomena such as life-threatening disturbances in the natural rhythm of the heart. In this paper, we propose a spatially extended but non-global scheme using an array of control points for terminating such spatiotemporally chaotic excitations. A low-amplitude control signal is applied sequentially at each point on the array, resulting in a traveling wave of excitation in the underlying medium which drives away the turbulent activ…
We study Lyapunov vectors (LVs) corresponding to the largest Lyapunov exponents in systems with spatiotemporal chaos. We focus on characteristic LVs and compare the results with backward LVs obtained via successive Gram-Schmidt orthonormalizations. Systems of a very different nature such as coupled-map lattices and the (continuous-time) Lorenz `96 model exhibit the same features in quantitative and qualitative terms. Additionally we propose a minimal stochastic model that reproduces the results for chaotic systems. Our work supports the claims about universality of our earlier results [I. G. S…
In a dynamical system the singular vector (SV) indicates which perturbation will exhibit maximal growth after a time interval $τ$. We show that in systems with spatiotemporal chaos the SV exponentially localizes in space. Under a suitable transformation, the SV can be described in terms of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with periodic noise. A scaling argument allows us to deduce a universal power law $τ^{-γ}$ for the localization of the SV. Moreover the same exponent $γ$ characterizes the finite-$τ$ deviation of the Lyapunov exponent in excellent agreement with simulations. Our results may h…
We drive a $d$-dimensional Heisenberg magnet using an anisotropic current. The continuum Langevin equation is analysed using a dynamical renormalization group and numerical simulations. We discover a rich steady-state phase diagram, including a critical point in a new nonequilibrium universality class, and a spatiotemporally chaotic phase. The latter may be `controlled' in a robust manner to target spatially periodic steady states with helical order.

We study the spatiotemporal dynamics, in one and two spatial dimensions, of two complex fields which are the two components of a vector field satisfying a vector form of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We find synchronization and generalized synchronization of the spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics. The two kinds of synchronization can coexist simultaneously in different regions of the space, and they are mediated by localized structures. A quantitative characterization of the degree of synchronization is given in terms of mutual information measures.
We report experiments on defect-tracking in the state of undulation chaos observed in thermal convection of an inclined fluid layer. We characterize the ensemble of defect trajectories according to their velocities, relative positions, diffusion, and gain and loss rates. In particular, the defects exhibit incidents of rapid transverse motion which result in power law distributions for a number of quantitative measures. We examine connections between this behavior and Lévy flights and anomalous diffusion. In addition, we describe time-reversal and system size invariance for defect creation and …
Using large-scale parallel numerical simulations we explore spatiotemporal chaos in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical domain with experimentally relevant boundary conditions. We use the variation of the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents and the leading order Lyapunov vector with system parameters to quantify states of high-dimensional chaos in fluid convection. We explore the relationship between the time dynamics of the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents and the pattern dynamics. For chaotic dynamics we find that all of the Lyapunov exponents are positively correlated with the leading orde…
We show that the dynamical behavior of a coupled map lattice where the individual maps are Bernoulli shift maps can be solved analytically for integer couplings. We calculate the invariant density of the system and show that it displays a nontrivial spatial behavior. We also introduce and calculate a generalized spatiotemporal correlation function.
Chaotic pattern dynamics in many experimental systems show structured time averages. We suggest that simple universal boundary effects underly this phenomenon and exemplify them with the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in a finite domain. As in the experiments, averaged patterns in the equation recover global symmetries locally broken in the chaotic field. Plateus in the average pattern wavenumber as a function of the system size are observed and studied and the different behaviors at the central and boundary regions are discussed. Finally, the structure strenght of average patterns is investiga…
Diffusion-induced turbulence in spatially extended oscillatory media near a supercritical Hopf bifurcation can be controlled by applying global time-delay autosynchronization. We consider the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in the Benjamin-Feir unstable regime and analytically investigate the stability of uniform oscillations depending on the feedback parameters. We show that a noninvasive stabilization of uniform oscillations is not possible in this type of systems. The synchronization diagram in the plane spanned by the feedback parameters is derived. Numerical simulations confirm the analy…
Linear control theory is used to develop an improved localized control scheme for spatially extended chaotic systems, which is applied to a Coupled Map Lattice as an example. The optimal arrangement of the control sites is shown to depend on the symmetry properties of the system, while their minimal density depends on the strength of noise in the system. The method is shown to work in any region of parameter space and requires a significantly smaller number of controllers compared to the method proposed earlier by Qu and Hu. A nonlinear generalization of the method for a 1-d lattice is also pr…
Excitable media are a generic class of models used to simulate a wide variety of natural systems including cardiac tissue. Propagation of excitation waves in this medium results in the formation of characteristic patterns such as rotating spiral waves. Instabilities in these structures may lead to spatiotemporal chaos through spiral turbulence, which has been linked to clinically diagnosed conditions such as cardiac fibrillation. Usual methods for controlling such phenomena involve very large amplitude perturbations and have several drawbacks. There have been several recent attempts to develop…
We investigate the possibility of projecting low dimensional chaos from spatiotemporal dynamics of a model for a kind of plastic instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. We first discuss the relationship between the spatiotemporal patterns of the model reflected in the nature of dislocation bands and the nature of stress serrations. We show that at low applied strain rates, there is a one-to-one correspondence with the randomly nucleated isolated bursts of mobile dislocation density and the stress drops. We then show that the model equations are spatiotemporally …
We report experimental evidence of the route to spatiotemporal chaos in a large 1D-array of hotspots in a thermoconvective system. Increasing the driving force, a stationary cellular pattern becomes unstable towards a mixed pattern of irregular clusters which consist of time-dependent localized patterns of variable spatiotemporal coherence. These irregular clusters coexist with the basic cellular pattern. The Fourier spectra corresponding to this synchronization transition reveals the weak coupling of a resonant triad. This pattern saturates with the formation of a unique domain of great spati…

Forecasting the behavior of high-dimensional dynamical systems using machine learning requires efficient methods to learn the underlying physical model. We demonstrate spatiotemporal chaos prediction using a machine learning architecture that, when combined with a next-generation reservoir computer, displays state-of-the-art performance with a computational time $10^3-10^4$ times faster for training process and training data set $\sim 10^2$ times smaller than other machine learning algorithms. We also take advantage of the translational symmetry of the model to further reduce the computational…
We present the first large scale numerical simulation of three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection near onset, under free-free boundary conditions for a fluid of Prandtl number $σ=0.5$. We find that a spatiotemporally chaotic state emerges immediately above onset, which we investigate as a function of the reduced control parameter $ε$. We conclude that the transition from conduction to spatiotemporal chaos is second order and of ``mean field'' character. We also present a simple theory for the time-averaged convective current. Finally, we show that the time-averaged structure factor satisfi…
We consider the wave and ray dynamics of the electromagnetic field in a parabolic dome microcavity. The structure of the fundamental s-wave involves a main lobe in which the electromagnetic field is confined around the focal point in an effective volume of the order of a cubic wavelength, while the modes with finite angular momentum have a structure that avoids the focal area and have correspondingly larger effective volume. The ray dynamics indicates that the fundamental s-wave is robust with respect to small geometrical deformations of the cavity, while the higher order modes are associated …

Optim. \textbf{46}, 775-791 (2007)] shown that the minimal spatially extended reaction-diffusion model of phytoplankton-zooplankton can exhibit both regular, chaotic behavior, and spatiotemporal patterns in a patchy environment. Based on that, the spatial plankton model is furtherly investigated by means of computer simulations and theoretical analysis i…
We extend the concept of generalized synchronization of chaos, a phenomenon that occurs in driven dynamical systems, to the context of autonomous spatiotemporal systems. It means a situation where the chaotic state variables in an autonomous system can be synchronized to each other but not to a coupling function defined from them. The form of the coupling function is not crucial; it may not depend on all the state variables nor it needs to be active for all times for achieving generalized synchronization. The procedure is based on the analogy between a response map subject to an external drive…
We generalize the concept of geometrical resonance to perturbed sine-Gordon, Nonlinear Schrödinger and Complex Ginzburg-Landau equations. Using this theory we can control different dynamical patterns. For instance, we can stabilize breathers and oscillatory patterns of large amplitudes successfully avoiding chaos. On the other hand, this method can be used to suppress spatiotemporal chaos and turbulence in systems where these phenomena are already present. This method can be generalized to even more general spatiotemporal systems.
