Excitable media are a generic class of models used to simulate a wide variety of natural systems including cardiac tissue. Propagation of excitation waves in this medium results in the formation of characteristic patterns such as rotating spiral waves. Instabilities in these structures may lead to spatiotemporal chaos through spiral turbulence, which has been linked to clinically diagnosed conditions such as cardiac fibrillation. Usual methods for controlling such phenomena involve very large amplitude perturbations and have several drawbacks. There have been several recent attempts to develop low-amplitude control procedures for spatiotemporal chaos in excitable media which are reviewed in this paper. The control schemes have been broadly classified by us into three types: (i) global, (ii) non-global spatially-extended and (iii) local, depending on the way the control signal is applied, and we discuss the merits and drawbacks for each.
In this paper, we study an excitable, biophysical system that supports wave propagation of nerve impulses. We consider a slow-fast, FitzHugh-Rinzel neuron model where only the membrane voltage interacts diffusively, giving rise to the formation of spatiotemporal patterns. We focus on local, nonlinear excitations and diverse neural responses in an excitable 1- and 2-dimensional configuration of diffusively coupled FitzHugh-Rinzel neurons. The study of the emerging spatiotemporal patterns is essential in understanding the working mechanism in different brain areas. We derive analytically the coe…
Excitable media can develop spiral chaos, in which the number of spirals changes chaotically with time. Depending on parameter values in dynamical equations, spiral chaos may permanently persist or spontaneously arrive at a steady state after a transient time, referred to as the lifetime. Previous numerical studies have demonstrated that the lifetime of transient spiral chaos increases exponentially with system size to a good approximation. In this study, using the fact that the number of spirals obeys a Gaussian distribution, we provide a general expression for the system size dependence of t…
Neurons are often connected, spatially and temporally, in phenomenal ways that promote wave propagation. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the emergent spatiotemporal patterns to understand the working mechanism of brain activity, especially in cortical areas. Here, we present an explicit mathematical analysis, corroborated by numerical results, to identify and investigate the spatiotemporal, non-uniform, patterns that emerge due to instability in an extended homogeneous 2D spatial domain, using the excitable Izhikevich neuron model. We examine diffusive instability and perform bifurcation…
Complex spatiotemporal dynamics have been a subject of recent experimental investigations in optical frequency comb microresonators and in driven fiber cavities with a Kerr-type media. We show that this complex behavior has a spatiotemporal chaotic nature. We determine numerically the Lyapunov spectra, allowing to characterize different dynamical behavior occurring in these simple devices. The Yorke-Kaplan dimension is used as an order parameter to characterize the bifurcation diagram. We identify a wide regime of parameters where the system exhibits a coexistence between the spatiotemporal ch…
Macroscopic systems subjected to injection and dissipation of energy can exhibit complex spatiotemporal behaviors as result of dissipative self-organization. Here, we report a one and two dimensional pattern forming set up, which exhibits a transition from stationary patterns to spatiotemporal chaotic textures, based on a nematic liquid crystal layer with spatially modulated input beam and optical feedback. Using an adequate projection of spatiotemporal diagrams, we determine the largest Lyapunov exponent. Jointly, this exponent and Fourier transform allow us to distinguish between spatiotempo…
Extreme events such as rogue wave in optics and fluids are often associated with the merging dynamics of coherent structures. We present experimental and numerical results on the physics of extreme events appearance in a spatially extended semiconductor microcavity laser with intracavity saturable absorber. This system can display deterministic irregular dynamics only thanks to spatial coupling through diffraction of light. We have identified parameter regions where extreme events are encountered and established the origin of this dynamics in the emergence of deterministic spatiotemporal chaos…
A new strategy, namely the "clean numerical simulation" (CNS), was proposed (J. Computational Physics, 418:109629, 2020) to gain reliable/convergent simulations (with negligible numerical noises) of spatiotemporal chaotic systems in a long enough interval of time, which provide us benchmark solution for comparison. Here we illustrate that machine learning (ML) can always give good enough fitting predictions of a spatiotemporal chaos by using, separately, two quite different training sets: one is the "clean database" given by the CNS with negligible numerical noises, the other is the "polluted …

Arrhythmias are potentially fatal disruptions to the normal heart rhythm, but their underlying dynamics is still poorly understood. Theoretical modeling is an important tool to fill this gap. Typical studies often employ detailed multidimensional conductance-based models. We describe the cardiac muscle with a three-dimensional map-based membrane potential model in lattices. Although maps retain the biophysical behavior of cells and generate computationally efficient tissue models, few studies have used them to understand cardiac dynamics. Our study captures healthy and pathological behaviors w…

Forecasting the behavior of high-dimensional dynamical systems using machine learning requires efficient methods to learn the underlying physical model. We demonstrate spatiotemporal chaos prediction using a machine learning architecture that, when combined with a next-generation reservoir computer, displays state-of-the-art performance with a computational time $10^3-10^4$ times faster for training process and training data set $\sim 10^2$ times smaller than other machine learning algorithms. We also take advantage of the translational symmetry of the model to further reduce the computational…
