We extend the concept of generalized synchronization of chaos, a phenomenon that occurs in driven dynamical systems, to the context of autonomous spatiotemporal systems. It means a situation where the chaotic state variables in an autonomous system can be synchronized to each other but not to a coupling function defined from them. The form of the coupling function is not crucial; it may not depend on all the state variables nor it needs to be active for all times for achieving generalized synchronization. The procedure is based on the analogy between a response map subject to an external drive acting with a probability p and an autonomous system of coupled maps where a global interaction between the maps takes place with this same probability. It is shown that, under some circumstances, the conditions for stability of generalized synchronized states are equivalent in both types of systems. Our results reveal the existence of similar minimal conditions for the emergence of generalized synchronization of chaos in driven and in autonomous spatiotemporal systems.
This paper describes the security weaknesses of a recently proposed secure communication method based on chaotic masking using projective synchronization of two chaotic systems. We show that the system is insecure and how to break it in two different ways, by high-pass filtering and by generalized synchronization.
This paper deals with two types of synchronous behavior of chaotic oscillators -- generalized synchronization and noise--induced synchronization. It has been shown that both these types of synchronization are caused by similar mechanisms and should be considered as the same type of the chaotic oscillator behavior. The mechanisms resulting in the generalized synchronization are mostly similar to ones taking place in the case of the noise-induced synchronization with biased noise.
We present the first report on inverse chaos synchronization between bi-directionally non-linearly and linearly coupled variable multiple time delay Ikeda systems. The results are of certain importance in secure chaos-based communication systems.
We demonstrate that a unidirectional coupling between a pattern forming system and its replica induces complete synchronization of the slave to the master system onto a spatiotemporal chaotic state.
We present the first report on inverse chaos synchronization where a driven modulated multiple time-delay chaotic system synchronizes to the inverse state of the driver system. Numerical simulations fully support the analytical approach.
Small networks of chaotic units which are coupled by their time-delayed variables, are investigated. In spite of the time delay, the units can synchronize isochronally, i.e. without time shift. Moreover, networks can not only synchronize completely, but can also split into different synchronized sublattices. These synchronization patterns are stable attractors of the network dynamics. Different networks with their associated behaviors and synchronization patterns are presented. In particular, we investigate sublattice synchronization, symmetry breaking, spreading chaotic motifs, synchronizatio…
In this paper, an electronic circuit implementation of a robustly chaotic two-dimensional map is presented. Two such electronic circuits are realized. One of the circuits is configured as the driver and the other circuit is configured as the driven system. Synchronization of chaos between the driver and the driven system is demonstrated.
The phenomenon of synchronization occurring in a locally coupled map lattice subject to an external drive is compared to the synchronization process in an autonomous coupled map system with similar local couplings plus a global interaction. It is shown that chaotic synchronized states in both systems are equivalent, but the collective states arising after the chaotic synchronized state becomes unstable can be different in these two systems. It is found that the external drive induces chaotic synchronization as well as synchronization of unstable periodic orbits of the local dynamics in the dri…
We investigate the phenomenon of chaos synchronization in systems subject to coexisting autonomous and external global fields by employing a simple model of coupled maps. Two states of chaos synchronization are found: (i) complete synchronization, where the maps synchronize among themselves and to the external field, and (ii) generalized or internal synchronization, where the maps synchronize among themselves but not to the external global field. We show that the stability conditions for both states can be achieved for a system of minimum size of two maps. We consider local maps possessing rob…
This paper describes the security weakness of a recently proposed secure communication method based on discrete-time chaos synchronization. We show that the security is compromised even without precise knowledge of the chaotic system used. We also make many suggestions to improve its security in future versions.
Generalized synchronization is analyzed in unidirectionally coupled oscillatory systems exhibiting spatiotemporal chaotic behavior described by Ginzburg-Landau equations. Several types of coupling betweenthe systems are analyzed. The largest spatial Lyapunov exponent is proposed as a new characteristic of the state of a distributed system, and its calculation is described for a distributed oscillatory system. Partial generalized synchronization is introduced as a new type of chaotic synchronization in spatially nonuniform distributed systems. The physical mechanisms responsible for the onset o…
We elucidate conditions for chaos anti-synchronization between two uni-directionally coupled multiple time delay power systems. The results are of some importance to prevent power black-out in the entire power grid.
Dynamical networks are important models for the behaviour of complex systems, modelling physical, biological and societal systems, including the brain, food webs, epidemic disease in populations, power grids and many other. Such dynamical networks can exhibit behaviour in which deterministic chaos, exhibiting unpredictability and disorder, coexists with synchronization, a classical paradigm of order. We survey the main theory behind complete, generalized and phase synchronization phenomena in simple as well as complex networks and discuss applications to secure communications, parameter estima…
We report a new type of chaos synchronization:inverse anticipating synchronization, where a time delay chaotic system can drive another system in such a way that the driven system anticipates the driver by synchronizing with its inverse future state. We extend the concept of inverse anticipating chaos synchronization to cascaded systems. We propose means for the experimental observation of inverse anticipating chaos synchronization in external cavity lasers.
We investigate chaos synchronization between Josephson junctions coupled uni-directionally with time-delay. We demonstrate the possibility of high quality synchronization with numerical simulations of such systems. The results are of certain importance for obtaining the high power system of Josephson junctions, which is promising for practical applications.
We investigate synchronization in the presence of delay time modulation for application to communication. We have observed that the robust synchronization is established by a common delay signal and its threshold is presented using Lyapunov exponents analysis. The influence of the delay time modulation in chaotic oscillators is also discussed.
By studying the autocorrelation function of the optoelectronic feedback semiconductor laser output we establish that the signatures of time delays can be erased in systems incorporating modulated feedback time delays. This property is of importance for the suitability of such laser systems for secure chaos-based communication systems. We also make the first report on chaos synchronization in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally coupled multiple time delay chaotic semiconductor lasers with modulated optoelectronic feedbacks.
We report on all- to- all chaos synchronization in a network of networks based on the Ikeda model. We consider one of the simplest cases. We find the existence and stability conditions for such a synchronization regime. Numerical simulations validate the analytical findings. The results can be of certain importance in achieving high level output for the coupled systems and information processing.
The properties of functional relation between a non-invertible chaotic drive and a response map in the regime of generalized synchronization of chaos are studied. It is shown that despite a very fuzzy image of the relation between the current states of the maps, the functional relation becomes apparent when a sufficient interval of driving trajectory is taken into account. This paper develops a theoretical framework of such functional relation and illustrates the main theoretical conclusions using numerical simulations.
We derive rigorous conditions for the synchronization of all-optically coupled lasers. In particular, we elucidate the role of the optical coupling phases for synchronizability by systematically discussing all possible network motifs containing two lasers with delayed coupling and feedback. Hereby we explain previous experimental findings. Further, we study larger networks and elaborate optimal conditions for chaos synchronization. We show that the relative phases between lasers can be used to optimize the effective coupling matrix.
We investigate phase synchronization between two identical or detuned response oscillators coupled to a slightly different drive oscillator. Our result is that phase synchronization can occur between response oscillators when they are driven by correlated (but not identical) inputs from the drive oscillator. We call this phenomenon Generalized Phase Synchronization (GPS) and clarify its characteristics using Lyapunov exponents and phase difference plots.
We study chaos synchronization between Josephson junctions governed by a central junction with a time delay and demonstrate with numerical simulations the possibility of high quality synchronization. The results are important for obtaining high power systems of Josephson junctions, which are promising for practical applications.
We show that the threshold of complete synchronization in a lattice of coupled non-smooth chaotic maps is determined by linear stability along the directions transversal to the synchronization subspace. As a result, the numerically determined synchronization threshold agree with the analytical results previously obtained [C. Anteneodo et al., Phys. Rev. E 68, 045202(R) (2003)] for this class of systems. We present both careful numerical experiments and a rigorous mathematical explanation confirming this fact, allowing for a generalization involving hyperbolic coupled map lattices.
An approach based on the kernel methods for capturing the nonlinear interdependence between two signals is introduced. It is demonstrated that the proposed approach is useful for characterizing generalized synchronization with a successful simple example. An attempt to choose an optimal kernel parameter based on cross validation is also discussed.
The chaotic spike train of a homoclinic dynamical system is self-synchronized by re-inserting a small fraction of the delayed output. Due to the sensitive nature of the homoclinic chaos to external perturbations, stabilization of very long periodic orbits is possible. On these orbits, the dynamics appears chaotic over a finite time, but then it repeats with a recurrence time that is slightly longer than the delay time. The effect, called delayed self-synchronization (DSS), displays analogies with neurodynamic events which occur in the build-up of long term memories.
This paper provides a unified method for analyzing chaos synchronization of the generalized Lorenz systems. The considered synchronization scheme consists of identical master and slave generalized Lorenz systems coupled by linear state error variables. A sufficient synchronization criterion for a general linear state error feedback controller is rigorously proven by means of linearization and Lyapunov's direct methods. When a simple linear controller is used in the scheme, some easily implemented algebraic synchronization conditions are derived based on the upper and lower bounds of the master…
It is shown that the synchronization behavior of a system of chaotic maps subject to either an external forcing or a coupling function of their internal variables can be inferred from the behavior of a single element in the system, which can be seen as a single drive-response map. From the conditions for stable synchronization in this single driven-map model with minimal ingredients, we find minimal conditions for the emergence of complete and generalized chaos synchronization in both driven and autonomous associated systems. Our results show that the presence of a common drive or a coupling f…
Based on the invariance principle of differential equations, a simple adaptive-feedback scheme is proposed to strictly synchronize almost all chaotic systems. Unlike the usual linear feedback, the variable feedback strength is automatically adapted to completely synchronize two almost arbitrary identical chaotic systems, so this scheme is analytical, and simple to implement in practice. Moreover it is quite robust against the effect of noise. The famous Lorenz and R$\ddot{\textrm{o}}$ssler hyperchaos systems are used as illustrative examples.
Two chaotic systems which interact by mutually exchanging a signal built from their delayed internal variables, can synchronize. A third unit may be able to record and to manipulate the exchanged signal. Can the third unit synchronize to the common chaotic trajectory, as well? If all parameters of the system are public, a proof is given that the recording system can synchronize as well. However, if the two interacting systems use private commutative filters to generate the exchanged signal, a driven system cannot synchronize. It is shown that with dynamic private filters the chaotic trajectory…
The synchronization process of two mutually delayed coupled deterministic chaotic maps is demonstrated both analytically and numerically. The synchronization is preserved when the mutually transmitted signal is concealed by two commutative private filters that are placed on each end of the communication channel. We demonstrate that when the transmitted signal is a convolution of the truncated time delayed output signals or some powers of the delayed output signals synchronization is still maintained. The task of a passive attacker is mapped onto Hilbert's tenth problem, solving a set of nonlin…
We investigate the relationship between the emergence of chaos synchronization and the information flow in dynamical systems possessing homogeneous or heterogeneous global interactions whose origin can be external (driven systems) or internal (autonomous systems). By employing general models of coupled chaotic maps for such systems, we show that the presence of a homogeneous global field, either external or internal, for all times is not indispensable for achieving complete or generalized synchronization in a system of chaotic elements. Complete synchronization can also appear with heterogeneo…
Spatiotemporal chaos in the form of defect-mediated turbulence is known for oscillators coupled by diffusion. Here we explore the same conditions that produce defect turbulence, in an array of oscillators that are coupled through the activator to a regular oscillator. We find that for very small coupling the oscillators behave independent of each other and then there is a transition to complete synchronization. On further increasing the coupling strength, there is period doubling and a transition to chaotic behavior of each driven unit. However the global behavior shows some ordering, and the …
A new method for secure information transmission based on generalized synchronization is proposed. The principal advantage of it is a remarkable stability to noise. To reveal this peculiarity of the proposed method the effectiveness of the detection of the information signal from the transmitted one in the presence of noise in the communication channel is examined both for the proposed scheme and for the schemes of chaotic communication known already. The main ideas of the proposed method are illustrated by the example of coupled Rössler systems used both transmitter and receiver.
The influence of noise on the generalized synchronization regime in the chaotic systems with dissipative coupling is considered. If attractors of the drive and response systems have an infinitely large basin of attraction, generalized synchronization is shown to possess a great stability with respect to noise. The reasons of the revealed particularity are explained by means of the modified system approach [A.E. Hramov, A.A. Koronovskii, Phys. Rev. E. 71, 067201 (2005)] and confirmed by the results of numerical calculations and experimental studies. The main results are illustrated using the ex…
We investigate synchronization between two unidirectionally coupled chaotic multi-feedback Ikeda systems and find both the existence and stability conditions for anticipating, lag, and complete synchronizations.Generalization of the approach to a wide class of nonlinear systems is also presented.
We make first report on inverse chaos synchronization between bi-directionally non-linearly and linearly coupled variable multiple time delay Ikeda systems. The results are of certain importance in secure chaos-based communication systems.
The synchronization of chaotic lasers and the optical phase synchronization of light originating in multiple coupled lasers have both been extensively studied, however, the interplay between these two phenomena, especially at the network level is unexplored. Here we experimentally compare chaos synchronization of laser networks with heterogeneous coupling delay times to phase synchronization of similar networks. While chaotic lasers exhibit deterioration in synchronization as the network time delay heterogeneity increases, phase synchronization is found to be independent of heterogeneity. The …
By using chaos synchronization between non-identical multiple time delay semiconductor lasers with optoelectronic feedbacks, we demonstrate numerically how fast dynamic logic gates can be constructed. The results may be helpful to obtain a computational hardware with reconfigurable properties.
Selected results of original numeric simulations of non-linear magnetostatic spin waves and microwave-frequency magnetic chaos in ferrite films are expounded, as third part of the work whose first two parts are recent arXive preprints 1204.0200 and 1204.2423 . Especially we consider crucial role of parametric processes in creating the chaos and simultaneously obstacles to its synchronization, and examine some possibilities of good enough synchronization (to an extent allowing its use for direct secure communication in microwave band).
Secure chaos based multiplex communication system scheme is proposed utilizing globally coupled semiconductor lasers with multiple variable time delay optoelectronic feedbacks.
We investigate the synchronization phenomenon in coupled chaotic map lattices where the couplings decay with distance following a power-law. Depending on the lattice size, the coupling strength and the range of the interactions, complete chaos synchronization may be attained. The synchronization domain in parameter space can be analytically delimited by means of the condition of negativity of the largest transversal Lyapunov exponent. Here we analyze in detail the role of all the system parameters in the ability of the lattice to achieve complete synchronization, testing analytical results wit…
A new behavior type of unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators near the generalized synchronization transition has been detected. It has been shown that the generalized synchronization appearance is preceded by the intermitted behavior: close to threshold parameter value the coupled chaotic systems demonstrate the generalized synchronization most of the time, but there are time intervals during which the synchronized oscillations are interrupted by non-synchronous bursts. This type of the system behavior has been called intermitted generalized synchronization (IGS) by analogy with intermi…
In this paper we show that the analysis of the dynamics in localized regions, i.e., sub-systems can be used to characterize the chaotic dynamics and the synchronization ability of the spatiotemporal systems. Using noisy scalar time-series data for driving along with simultaneous self-adaptation of the control parameter representative control goals like suppressing spatiotemporal chaos and synchronization of spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics have been discussed.
We report the first experimental evidence of a successful synchronization of spatiotemporal chaos. The experiments were performed on two unidirectionally coupled, nonlinear-optical systems of single-feedback type. The synchronization was investigated for different degrees of complexity of the spontaneous structures. In all cases, the cross-correlation between the two system states was found to increase with the strength of the coupling. Numerical simulations yield comparable results and throw a light on the role of spatial inhomogeneities, which hamper a perfect synchronization.
Depending on temperature the modified Hodgkin-Huxley (MHH) equations exhibit a variety of dynamical behavior including intrinsic chaotic firing. We analyze synchronization in a large ensemble of MHH neurons that are interconnected with gap junctions. By evaluating tangential Lyapunov exponents we clarify whether synchronous state of neurons is chaotic or periodic. Then, we evaluate transversal Lyapunov exponents to elucidate if this synchronous state is stable against infinitesimal perturbations. Our analysis elucidates that with weak gap junctions, stability of synchronization of MHH neurons …
We consider synchronization of coupled chaotic systems and propose an adaptive strategy that aims at evolving the strength of the coupling to achieve stability of the synchronized evolution. We test this idea in a simple configuration in which two chaotic systems are unidirectionally coupled (a sender and a receiver) and we study conditions for the receiver to adaptively synchronize with the sender. Numerical simulations show that, under certain conditions, our strategy is successful in dynamically evolving the coupling strength until it converges to a value that is compatible with synchroniza…
By studying laser systems with multiple time delays, we demonstrate that the signatures of time delays in the autocorrelation coefficient and the mutual information of the laser output can be erased for systems with variable time delays. This property makes such laser systems highly suitable for secure chaos-based communication systems. We also present the first report on chaos synchronization in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally coupled variable multiple time delay laser diodes with electro-optical feedbacks.
The onset of generalized synchronization of chaos in directionally-coupled systems corresponds to the formation of a continuous mapping which enables one to persistently define the state of the response system from the trajectory of the drive system. The recently developed theory of generalized synchronization of chaos deals only with the case where this synchronization mapping is a single-valued function. In this paper, we explore generalized synchronization in a regime where the synchronization mapping can become a multi-valued function. Specifically, we study the properties of the multi-val…
In this paper, synchronization of fractional order Coullet system with precise and also unknown parameters are studied. The proposed method which is based on the adaptive backstepping, has been developed to synchronize two chaotic systems with the same or partially different attractor. Sufficient conditions for the synchronization are analytically obtained. There after an adaptive control law is derived to make the states of two slightly mismatched chaotic Coullet systems synchronized. The stability analysis is then proved using the Lyapunov stability theorem. It is the privilege of the approa…
Different chaos synchronization based encryption schemes are reviewed and compared from the practical point of view. As an efficient cryptanalysis tool for chaos encryption, a proposal based on the Error Function Attack is presented systematically and used to evaluate system security. We define a quantitative measure (Quality Factor) of the effective applicability of a chaos encryption scheme, which takes into account the security, the encryption speed, and the robustness against channel noise. A comparison is made of several encryption schemes and it is found that a scheme based on one-way co…
We show that two coupled map lattices that are mutually coupled to one another with a delay can display zero delay synchronization if they are driven by a third coupled map lattice. We analytically estimate the parametric regimes that lead to synchronization and show that the presence of mutual delays enhances synchronization to some extent. The zero delay or isochronal synchronization is reasonably robust against mismatches in the internal parameters of the coupled map lattices and we analytically estimate the synchronization error bounds.
Collective chaos is shown to emerge, via a period-doubling cascade, from quasiperiodic partial synchronization in a population of identical inhibitory neurons with delayed global coupling. This system is thoroughly investigated by means of an exact model of the macroscopic dynamics, valid in the thermodynamic limit. The collective chaotic state is reproduced numerically with a finite population, and persists in the presence of weak heterogeneities. Finally, the relationship of the model's dynamics with fast neuronal oscillations is discussed.
A high degree of chaos synchronization among transverse mode pairs with parity-symmetric polarizations was demonstrated in a laser-diode pumped thin-slice c-cut Nd: GdVO4 laser. The amplitude correlation coefficient greater than R > 0.994 resulted from a non-reversing mirror symmetric-polarization-dependent structural change in the modal patterns, where chaotic dynamics of the whole system consisting of qualitatively different dynamics, which depend on the polarization crossing angle, resembled that of a chaotic single mode laser. A self-organized sender-receiver type of chaos synchronization …
Synchronization of spatiotemporally chaotic extended systems is considered in the context of coupled one-dimensional Complex Ginzburg-Landau equations (CGLE). A regime of coupled spatiotemporal intermittency (STI) is identified and described in terms of the space-time synchronized chaotic motion of localized structures. A quantitative measure of synchronization as a function of coupling parameter is given through distribution functions and information measures. The coupled STI regime is shown to dissapear into regular dynamics for situations of strong coupling, hence a description in terms of …
The problem of dynamic estimation of all parameters of a model representing chaotic and hyperchaotic systems using information from a scalar measured output is solved. The variational calculus based method is robust in the presence of noise, enables online estimation of the parameters and is also able to rapidly track changes in operating parameters of the experimental system. The method is demonstrated using the Lorenz, Rossler chaos and hyperchaos models. Its possible application in decoding communications using chaos is discussed.
