This note addresses the question of energy conservation for the 2D Euler system with an $L^p$-control on vorticity. We provide a direct argument, based on a mollification in physical space, to show that the energy of a weak solution is conserved if $ω= \nabla \times u \in L^{\frac32}$. An example of a 2D field in the class $ω\in L^{\frac32 - ε}$ for any $ε>0$, and $u\in B^{1/3}_{3,\infty}$ (Onsager critical space) is constructed with non-vanishing energy flux. This demonstrates sharpness of the kinematic argument. Finally we prove that any solution to the Euler equation produced via a vanishing viscosity limit from Navier-Stokes, with $ω\in L^p$, for $p>1$, conserves energy. This is an Onsager-supercritical condition under which the energy is still conserved, pointing to a new mechanism of energy balance restoration.
The Onsager's conjecture has two parts: conservation of energy, if the exponent is larger than $1/3$ and the possibility of dissipative Euler solutions, if the exponent is less or equal than $1/3$. The paper proves half of the conjecture, the conservation part, in bounded domains.
For any θ<1/10 we construct periodic weak solutions of the incompressible Euler equations which dissipate the total kinetic energy and are Hölder-continuous with exponent θ. A famous conjecture of Onsager states the existence of such dissipative solutions with any Hölder exponent θ<1/3. Our theorem is the first result in this direction.
The aim of this work is to extend and prove the Onsager conjecture for a class of conservation laws that possess generalized entropy. One of the main findings of this work is the "universality" of the Onsager exponent, $α> 1/3$, concerning the regularity of the solutions, say in $C^{0,α}$, that guarantees the conservation of the generalized entropy; regardless of the structure of the genuine nonlinearity in the underlying system.
We show that weak solutions of general conservation laws in bounded domains conserve their generalized entropy, and other respective companion laws, if they possess a certain fractional differentiability of order 1/3 in the interior of the domain, and if the normal component of the corresponding fluxes tend to zero as one approaches the boundary. This extends various recent results of the authors.
We consider the incompressible Euler equations in a bounded domain in three space dimensions. Recently, the first two authors proved Onsager's conjecture for bounded domains, i.e., that the energy of a solution to these equations is conserved provided the solution is Hölder continuous with exponent greater than 1/3, uniformly up to the boundary. In this contribution we relax this assumption, requiring only interior Hölder regularity and continuity of the normal component of the energy flux near the boundary. The significance of this improvement is given by the fact that our new condition is co…
We prove a version of Onsager's conjecture on the conservation of energy for the incompressible Euler equations in the context of statistical solutions, as introduced recently by Fjordholm et al. As a byproduct, we also obtain a new proof for the conservative direction of Onsager's conjecture for weak solutions. Dedicated to Edriss S. Titi on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
Onsager conjectured that weak solutions of the Euler equations for incompressible fluids in 3D conserve energy only if they have a certain minimal smoothness, (of order of 1/3 fractional derivatives) and that they dissipate energy if they are rougher. In this paper we prove that energy is conserved for velocities in the function space $B^{1/3}_{3,c(\NN)}$. We show that this space is sharp in a natural sense. We phrase the energy spectrum in terms of the Littlewood-Paley decomposition and show that the energy flux is controlled by local interactions. This locality is shown to hold also for the …
We give a simple proof of Onsager's conjecture concerning energy conservation for weak solutions to the Euler equations on any compact Riemannian manifold, extending the results of Constantin-E-Titi and Cheskidov-Constantin-Friedlander-Shvydkoy in the flat case. When restricted to $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, our approach yields an alternative proof of the sharp result of the latter authors. Our method builds on a systematic use of a smoothing operator defined via a geometric heat flow, which was considered by Milgram-Rosenbloom as a means to establish the Hodge theorem. In particular…
In this paper we give elementary proofs of energy conservation for weak solutions to the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in the class of Hölder continuous functions, relaxing some of the assumptions on the time variable (both integrability and regularity at initial time) and presenting them in a unified way. Then, in the final section we prove (for the Navier-Stokes equations) a result of energy conservation in presence of a solid boundary and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This result seems the first one -- in the viscous case -- with Hölder type assumptions, but without additional ass…
The first half of Onsager's conjecture states that the Euler equations of an ideal incompressible fluid conserve energy if $u (\cdot ,t) \in C^{0, θ} (\mathbb{T}^3)$ with $θ> \frac{1}{3}$. In this paper, we prove an analogue of Onsager's conjecture for several subgrid scale $α$-models of turbulence. In particular we find the required Hölder regularity of the solutions that ensures the conservation of energy-like quantities (either the $H^1 (\mathbb{T}^3)$ or $L^2 (\mathbb{T}^3)$ norms) for these models. We establish such results for the Leray-$α$ model, the Euler-$α$ equations (also known as t…
We prove that given any $β<1/3$, a time interval $[0,T]$, and given any smooth energy profile $e \colon [0,T] \to (0,\infty)$, there exists a weak solution $v$ of the three-dimensional Euler equations such that $v \in C^β([0,T]\times \mathbb{T}^3)$, with $e(t) = \int_{\mathbb{T}^3} |v(x,t)|^2 dx$ for all $t\in [0,T]$. Moreover, we show that a suitable $h$-principle holds in the regularity class $C^β_{t,x}$, for any $β<1/3$. The implication of this is that the dissipative solutions we construct are in a sense typical in the appropriate space of subsolutions as opposed to just isolated examples.
Properties of an infinite system of nonlinearly coupled ordinary differential equations are discussed. This system models some properties present in the equations of motion for an inviscid fluid such as the skew symmetry and the 3-dimensional scaling of the quadratic nonlinearity. It is proved that the system with forcing has a unique equilibrium and that every solution blows up in finite time in $H^{5/6}$-norm. Onsager's conjecture is confirmed for the model system.
In this note we extend a 2018 result of Bardos and Titi \cite{BT} to a new class of functional spaces $C^{0,α}_λ(\barΩ)$. It is shown that weak solutions $\,u\,$ satisfy the energy equality provided that $u\in L^3((0,T);C^{0,α}_λ(\barΩ))$ with $α\geq\frac{1}{3}$ and $λ>0$. The result is new for $\,α= \,\frac{1}{3}\,.$ Actually, a quite stronger result holds. For convenience we start by a similar extension of a 1994 result of Constantin, E, and Titi, \cite{CET}, in the space periodic case. The proofs follow step by step those of the above authors. For the readers convenience, and completeness, …
Intermittency phenomena are known to be among the main reasons why Kolmogorov's theory of fully developed Turbulence is not in accordance with several experimental results. This is why some \emph{fractal} statistical models have been proposed in order to realign the theoretical physical predictions with the empirical experiments. They indicate that energy dissipation, and thus singularities, are not space filling for high Reynolds numbers. This note aims to give a precise mathematical statement on the energy conservation of such fractal models of Turbulence. We prove that for $θ-$Hölder contin…
In this paper we give a proof of an Onsager type conjecture on conservation of energy and entropies of weak solutions to the relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations. As concerns the regularity of weak solutions, say in Sobolev spaces $W^{α,p}$, we determine Onsager type exponents $α$ that guarantee the conservation of all entropies. In particular, the Onsager exponent $α$ is smaller than $α= 1/3$ established for fluid models. Entropies conservation is equivalent to the renormalization property, which have been introduced by DiPerna--Lions for studying well-posedness of passive transport equatio…
We use Hodge theory and functional analysis to develop a clean approach to heat flows and Onsager's conjecture on Riemannian manifolds with boundary, where the weak solution lies in the trace-critical Besov space $B_{3,1}^{\frac{1}{3}}$. We also introduce heatable currents as the natural analogue to tempered distributions and justify their importance in Hodge theory.
Onsager's conjecture for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations concerns the validity of energy equality of weak solutions with regards to their smoothness. In this note we establish energy equality for weak solutions in a large class of function spaces. These conditions are weak-in-time with optimal space regularity and therefore weaker than all previous classical results. Heuristics using intermittency argument suggests the possible sharpness of our results.
In recent work by Isett (arXiv:1211.4065), and later by Buckmaster, De Lellis, Isett and Székelyhidi Jr. (arXiv:1302.2815), iterative schemes where presented for constructing solutions belonging to the Hölder class $C^{1/5-ε}$ of the 3D incompressible Euler equations which do not conserve energy. The cited work is partially motivated by a conjecture of Lars Onsager in 1949 relating to the existence of $C^{1/3-ε}$ solutions to the Euler equations which dissipate energy. In this note we show how the later scheme can be adapted in order to prove the existence of non-trivial Hölder continuous solu…
The goal of this note is to show that, also in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, with $\partial Ω\in C^2$, any weak solution, $(u(x,t),p(x,t))$, of the Euler equations of ideal incompressible fluid in $Ω\times (0,T) \subset \mathbb{R}^n\times\mathbb{R}_t$, with the impermeability boundary condition: $u\cdot \vec n =0$ on $\partialΩ\times(0,T)$, is of constant energy on the interval $(0,T)$ provided the velocity field $u \in L^3((0,T); C^{0,α}(\overlineΩ))$, with $α>\frac13\,.$
Most recently, in arXiv:1907.05360 [math.AP], we introduced the theory of heatable currents and proved Onsager's conjecture on Riemannian manifolds with boundary, where the weak solution has $B_{3,1}^{\frac{1}{3}}$ spatial regularity. In this sequel, by applying techniques from geometric microlocal analysis to construct the Hodge-Neumann heat kernel, we obtain off-diagonal decay and local Bernstein estimates, and then use them to extend the result to the Besov space $\widehat{B}_{3,V}^{\frac{1}{3}}$, which generalizes both the space $\widehat{B}_{3,c(\mathbb{N})}^{1/3}$ from arXiv:1310.7947 [m…
For any $ε>0$ we show the existence of continuous periodic weak solutions $v$ of the Euler equations which do not conserve the kinetic energy and belong to the space $L^1_t (C_x^{\frac{1}{3}-ε})$, namely $x\mapsto v (x,t)$ is $(\frac{1}{3}-ε)$-Hölder continuous in space at a.e. time $t$ and the integral $\int [v(\cdot, t)]_{\frac{1}{3}-ε} dt$ is finite. A well-known open conjecture of L. Onsager claims that such solutions exist even in the class $L^\infty_t (C_x^{\frac{1}{3}-ε})$.
We give new results of the phase transition of dilute colloidal solutions of rod-like molecules in dimension $D \geq 3$. For the low concentration of particles in a carrier fluid, we prove that the isotropic phase is the unique solution to the Doi-Onsager model with the general potential kernel. In addition, we present the regime of the bifurcation of nematic phases in the class of axially symmetric solutions. Our method is based on a generalization of the classical Leray-Schauder degree we developed for this problem.
We study the bifurcation diagram of the Onsager free-energy func- tional for liquid crystals with orientation parameter on the sphere in three dimensions. In particular, we concentrate on a very general class of two- body interaction potentials including the Onsager kernel. The problem is reformulated as a non-linear eigenvalue problem for the kernel operator, and a general method to find the corresponding eigenvalues and eigenfunctions is presented. Our main tools for this analysis are spherical harmonics and a special algorithm for computing expansions of products of spherical harmon- ics in…
We establish new non-uniqueness results for the Euler equations with external force on $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ $(d\geq3)$. By introducing a novel alternating convex integration scheme, we construct non-unique, almost-everywhere smooth, Hölder-continuous solutions with regularity $\frac{1}{2}-$, which is notably above the Onsager threshold of $\frac{1}{3}$. The solutions we construct differ significantly in nature from those which arise from the recent unstable vortex construction of Vishik; in particular, our solutions are genuinely $d$-dimensional ($d\geq3$), and give non-uniqueness results for any …
In this paper we deal with the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations in the three-dimensional periodic setting. We prove non-uniqueness for an $L^2$-dense set of Hölder continuous initial data in the class of Hölder continuous admissible weak solutions for all exponents below the Onsager-critical $1/3$. This improves previous results on non-uniqueness obtained by Daneri in arXiv:1302.0988 and by Daneri and Szekelyhidi Jr. in arXiv:1603.09714 and generalizes the result obtained by Buckmaster, De Lellis, Szekelyhidi Jr. and Vicol in arXiv:1701.08678.
We give a localized regularity condition for energy conservation of weak solutions of the Euler equations on a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 2$, with boundary. In the bulk of fluid, we assume Besov regularity of the velocity $u\in L^3(0,T;B_{3}^{1/3, c_0})$. On an arbitrary thin neighborhood of the boundary, we assume boundedness of velocity and pressure and, at the boundary, we assume continuity of wall-normal velocity. We also prove two theorems which establish that the global viscous dissipation vanishes in the inviscid limit for Leray--Hopf solutions $u^ν$ of the Navier-Stokes equa…
We are motivated by the study of the Microcanonical Variational Principle within the Onsager's description of two-dimensional turbulence in the range of energies where the equivalence of statistical ensembles fails. We obtain sufficient conditions for the existence and multiplicity of solutions for the corresponding Mean Field Equation on convex and "thin" enough domains in the supercritical (with respect to the Moser-Trudinger inequality) regime. This is a brand new achievement since existence results in the supercritical region were previously known \un{only} on multiply connected domains. T…
This paper addresses the problem of energy conservation for the two- and three-dimensional density-dependent Euler equations. Two types of sufficient conditions on the regularity of solutions are provided to ensure the conservation of total kinetic energy on the entire time interval including the initial time. The first class of data assumes integrability on the spatial gradient of the density, and hence covers the classical result of Constantin-E-Titi for the homogeneous Euler equations. The other type of data imposes extra time Besov regularity on the velocity profile, and the corresponding …
We study stationary homogeneous solutions to the 3D Euler equation. The problem is motivated be recent exclusions of self-similar blowup for Euler and its relation to Onsager conjecture and intermittency. We reveal several new classes of solutions and prove rigidity properties in specific categories of genuinely 3D solutions. In particular, irrotational solutions are characterized by vanishing of the Bernoulli function; and tangential flows are necessarily 2D axisymmetric pure rotations. In several cases solutions are excluded altogether. The arguments reveal geodesic features of the Euler flo…
Recently the second and third author developed an iterative scheme for obtaining rough solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations in Hölder spaces (arXiv:1202.1751 and arXiv:1205.3626 (2012)). The motivation comes from Onsager's conjecture. The construction involves a superposition of weakly interacting perturbed Beltrami flows on infinitely many scales. An obstruction to better regularity arises from the errors in the linear transport of a fast periodic flow by a slow velocity field. In a recent paper P. Isett (arXiv:1211.4065) has improved upon our methods, introducing some novel ide…
In [Isett,13], the first author proposed a strengthening of Onsager's conjecture on the failure of energy conservation for incompressible Euler flows with Hölder regularity not exceeding $1/3$. This stronger form of the conjecture implies that anomalous dissipation will fail for a generic Euler flow with regularity below the Onsager critical space $L_t^\infty B_{3,\infty}^{1/3}$ due to low regularity of the energy profile. In this paper, we establish two theorems that may be viewed as first steps towards establishing the conjectured failure of energy regularity for generic solutions with Hölde…
We consider extensions of excluded volume interactions for complex corpora that generalize simple rod-like particles. The Onsager equation can be defined for quite general configuration spaces, and the dimension reduction of the phase space in the limit of highly intense interaction can be shown. The formalism describes both freely articulated and interacting N-rods and the example of interacting 2-rods is given in detail.
In this article we focus our attention on the principle of energy conservation within the context of systems of fluid dynamics. We give an overview of results concerning the resolution of the famous Onsager conjecture - which states regularity requirements for weak solutions of the incompressible Euler system to conserve energy. Further we survey results providing optimal sufficient regularity conditions for energy conservation for other balance laws: compressible Euler, Navier-Stokes, magnetohydrodynamics and general conservation laws.
Building on the recent work of C. De Lellis and L. Székelyhidi, we construct global weak solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations which are zero outside of a finite time interval and have velocity in the Hölder class $C_{t,x}^{1/5 - ε}$. By slightly modifying the proof, we show that every smooth solution to incompressible Euler on $(-2, 2) \times {\mathbb T}^3$ coincides on $(-1, 1) \times {\mathbb T}^3$ with some Hölder continuous solution that is constant outside $(-3/2, 3/2) \times {\mathbb T}^3$. We also propose a conjecture related to our main result that would im…
On strictly starshaped domains of second kind we find natural sufficient conditions which allow the solution of two long standing open problems closely related to the mean field equation $\prl$ below. On one side we catch the global behaviour of the Entropy for the mean field Microcanonical Variational Principle ((MVP) for short) arising in the Onsager description of two-dimensional turbulence. This is the completion of well known results first established in Caglioti et al. Comm.Math.Phys. (1995). Among other things we find a full unbounded interval of strict convexity of the Entropy. On the …
We study the inviscid dyadic model of the Euler equations and prove some regularizing properties of the nonlinear term that occur due to forward energy cascade. We show every solution must have 3/5 L^2-based (or 1/10 L^3-based) regularity for all positive time. We conjecture this holds up to Onsager's scaling, where the L^2-based exponent is 5/6 and the L^3-based exponent is 1/3.
We establish energy-balance for weak solutions of the stochastically forced incompressible Euler equations, enjoying Hölder regularity $C^α$, $α>1/3$. It is well known as the Onsager's conjecture for the deterministic incompressible Euler equations, which describes the energy conservation of weak solutions having Hölder regularity $C^α$, $α>1/3$. Additionally, we obtain energy-balance for the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler system driven by a cylindrical Wiener process.
