This paper is devoted to a study of the null controllability problems for one-dimensional linear degenerate wave equations through a boundary controller. First, the well-posedness of linear degenerate wave equations is discussed. Then the null controllability of some degenerate wave equations is established, when a control acts on the non-degenerate boundary. Different from the known controllability results in the case that a control acts on the degenerate boundary, any initial value in state space is controllable in this case. Also, an explicit expression for the controllability time is given. Furthermore, a counterexample on the controllability is given for some other degenerate wave equations.
The paper deals with exact null-controllability problem for a linear control system consisting of two serially connected abstract control systems. Controllability conditions are obtained. Applications to the exact null-controllability for interconnected control system of heat and wave equations are considered.
We establish the null controllability for linear stochastic fourth order parabolic equations. Utilizing the duality argument, the null controllability is reduced to the observability for backward fourth order stochastic parabolic equations, and the desired observability estimate is obtained by a new global Carleman estimate. Our Carleman estimate is based on a new fundamental identity for a stochastic fourth order parabolic operator.
For a class of linear time-delay control systems satisfying the property of completability of the generalized eigenvectors we prove that the problems of complete stabilizability and exact null controllability are equivalent.
This paper is devoted to the controllability of a general linear hyperbolic system in one space dimension using boundary controls on one side. Under precise and generic assumptions on the boundary conditions on the other side, we previously established the optimal time for the null and the exact controllability for this system for a generic source term. In this work, we prove the null-controllability for any time greater than the optimal time and for any source term. Similar results for the exact controllability are also discussed.
In this paper we will generalize the Kalman rank condition for the null controllability to $n$-coupled linear degenerate parabolic systems with constant coefficients, diagonalizable diffusion matrix, and $m$-controls. For that we prove a global Carleman estimate of the solution of a scalar $2n$-order equation then we infer from it an observability inequality for the corresponding adjoint system, and thus the null controllability.
This paper studies reachability and null-controllability for difference inclusions involving convex processes. Such difference inclusions arise, for instance, in the study of linear discrete-time systems whose inputs and/or states are constrained to lie within a convex cone. After developing a geometric framework for convex processes relying on invariance properties, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for both reachability and null-controllability in terms of the spectrum of dual processes.
In this paper we deal with the local null controllability of the N-dimensional Navier-Stokes system with internal controls having one vanishing component. The novelty of this work is that no condition is imposed on the control domain.
In this paper, we are concerned with the controllability of a chemotaxis system of parabolic-elliptic type. By linearizing the nonlinear system into two separated linear equations to bypass the obstacle caused by the nonlinear drift term, we establish the local null controllability of the original nonlinear system. The approach is different from the usual way of treating the coupled parabolic systems.
This paper deals with the problem of internal null-controllability of a heat equation posed on a bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions and perturbed by a semilinear nonlocal term. We prove the small-time local null-controllability of the equation. The proof relies on two main arguments. First, we establish the small-time local null-controllability of a $2 \times 2$ reaction-diffusion system, where the second equation is governed by the parabolic operator $τ\partial_t - σΔ$, $τ, σ> 0$. More precisely, this controllability result is obtained uniformly with respect to the parameters $…
We study the memory-type null controllability property for wave equations involving memory terms. The goal is not only to drive the displacement and the velocity (of the considered wave) to rest at some time-instant but also to require the memory term to vanish at the same time, ensuring that the whole process reaches the equilibrium. This memory-type null controllability problem can be reduced to the classical null controllability property for a coupled PDE-ODE system. The later is viewed as a degenerate system of wave equations, the velocity of propagation for the ODE component vanishing. Th…
In this paper, we prove the null controllability of some parabolic-elliptic systems. The control is distributed, locally supported in space and appears only in one PDE. The arguments rely on fixed-point reformulation and suitable Carleman estimates for the solutions to the adjoint system. Under appropriate assumptions, we also prove that the solution can be obtained as the asymptotic limit of some similar parabolic systems.
We study the minimum energy null-controllability problem for differential equations with point-wise delays. For the equations of both neutral and retarded type we reduce the problem of finding the optimal control to a Volterra integral equation and solve it explicitly. We prove that for any initial state and any controllability time the corresponding optimal control belongs to the characteristic space generated by the equation's exponentials. Besides, we show that the proposed approach can be applied to the systems of retarded equations with one delay term.
This paper is devoted to study the cost of the null controllability for the Stokes system. Using the control transmutation method we show that the cost of driving the Stokes system to rest at time T is of order e^C/T when T -->0^+,i.e., the same order as for the heat equation. For this to be possible, we are led to study the exact controllability of one hyperbolic system with a resistance term, which will be done under assumptions on the control region.
We derive in a direct and rather straightforward way the null controllability of a 2-D heat equation with boundary control. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in parameterizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". This provides an explicit control law achieving the exact steering to zero. Numerical experiments demonstrate the relevance of the approach.
In this paper we study the null controllability of some non diagonalizable degenerate parabolic systems of PDEs, we assume that the diffusion, coupling and controls matrices are constant and we characterize the null controllability by an algebraic condition so called \textit{Kalman's rank} condition.
This paper is concerned with the constrained approximate null controllability of heat equation coupled by a real matrix $P$, where the controls are impulsive and periodically acted into the system through a series of real matrices $\{Q_k\}_{k=1}^\hbar$. The conclusions are given in two cases. In the case that the controls act globally into the system, we prove that the system is global constrained approximate null controllable under a spectral condition of $P$ together with a rank condition of $P$ and $\{Q_k\}_{k=1}^\hbar$; While in the case that the controls act locally into the system, we pr…
This paper is addressed to a study of the null controllability for the semilinear parabolic equation with a complex principal part. For this purpose, we establish a key weighted identity for partial differential operators $(\a+i\b)\pa_t+\sum\limits_{j,k=1}^n\pa_k(a^{jk}\pa_j)$ (with real functions $\a$ and $\b$), by which we develop a universal approach, based on global Carleman estimate, to deduce not only the desired explicit observability estimate for the linearized complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, but also all the known controllability/observability results for the parabolic, hyperbolic, …
In this paper, we are concerned with the null controllability of a linear population dynamics cascade systems (or the so-called prey-predator models) with two different dispersion coefficients which degenerate in the boundary and with one control force. We develop first a Carleman type inequality for its adjoint system, and then an observability inequality which allows us to deduce the existence of a control acting on a subset of the space domain which steers both populations of a certain age to extinction in a finite time.
In this paper, we prove a local null controllability result for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations on a (smooth) bounded domain of R^3 with null Dirichlet boundary conditions. The control is distributed in an arbitrarily small nonempty open subset and has two vanishing components. J.-L. Lions and E. Zuazua proved that the linearized system is not necessarily null controllable even if the control is distributed on the entire domain, hence the standard linearization method fails. We use the return method together with a new algebraic method inspired by the works of M. Gromov and previ…
We consider a linear hybrid system composed by two rods of equal length connected by a point mass. We show that the system is null controllable with Dirichlet and Neumann controls. The results are based on a careful spectral spectral analysis together with the moment method.
In this paper we study the boundary controllability for a system of two coupled degenerate/singular parabolic equations with a control acting on only one equation. We analyze both approximate and null boundary controllability properties. Besides, we provide an estimate on the null-control cost. The proofs are based on the use of the moment method by Fattorini and Russell together with some results on biorthogonal families.

The main objective of this paper is to establish the null controllability for the fourth order semilinear parabolic equations with the nonlinearities involving the state and its gradient up to second order. First of all, based on optimal control theory of partial differential equations and global Carleman estimates obtained in \cite{gs} for fourth order parabolic equation with $L^2(Q)$-external force, we establish the global Carleman estimates for the $L^2(Q)$ weak solutions of the same system with a low regularity external term and some linear terms including the derivatives of the state up t…
In this work, we are interested in the small time local null controllability for the viscous Burgers' equation $y_t - y_{xx} + y y_x = u(t)$ on the line segment $[0,1]$, with null boundary conditions. The second-hand side is a scalar control playing a role similar to that of a pressure. In this setting, the classical Lie bracket necessary condition $[f_1,[f_1,f_0]]$ introduced by Sussmann fails to conclude. However, using a quadratic expansion of our system, we exhibit a second order obstruction to small time local null controllability. This obstruction holds although the information propagati…
In this paper, we establish two Carleman estimates for a stochastic degenerate parabolic equation. The first one is for the backward stochastic degenerate parabolic equation with singular weight function. Combining this Carleman estimate and an approximate argument, we prove the null controllability of the forward stochastic degenerate parabolic equation with the gradient term. The second one is for the forward stochastic degenerate parabolic equation with regular weighted function, based on which we obtain the Lipschitz stability for an inverse problem of determining a random source depending…
In this paper, we consider a null controllability and an inverse source problem for stochastic Grushin equation with boundary degeneracy and singularity. We construct two special weight functions to establish two Carleman estimates for the whole stochastic Grushin operator with singular potential by a weighted identity method. One is for the backward stochastic Grushin equation with singular weight function. We then apply it to prove the null controllability for stochastic Grushin equation for any $T$ and any degeneracy $γ>0$, when our control domain touches the degeneracy line $\{x=0\}$. In o…
Given a linear control system in a Hilbert space with a bounded control operator, we establish a characterization of exponential stabilizability in terms of an observability inequality. Such dual characterizations are well known for exact (null) controllability. Our approach exploits classical Fenchel duality arguments and, in turn, leads to characterizations in terms of observability inequalities of approximately null controllability and of $α$-null controllability. We comment on the relationships between those various concepts, at the light of the observability inequalities that characterize…

In this paper, we recover the boundary null controllability for the degenerate heat equation by analyzing the asymptotic behavior of an eligible family of state-control pairs $((u_{\varepsilon}, h_{\varepsilon}))_{\varepsilon >0}$ solving corresponding singularly perturbed internal null controllability problems. As in other situations studied in the literature, our approach relies on Carleman estimates and meticulous weak convergence results. However, for the degenerate parabolic case, some specific trace operator inequalities must be obtained, in order to justify correctly the passage to the …
In this paper, we apply the hierarchical strategy to a semilinear weakly degenerate parabolic equation involving a gradient term. We use the Stackelberg-Nash strategy with one leader which tries to drive the solution to zero and two followers intended to solve a Nash equilibrium corresponding to a bi-objective optimal control problem. Since the system is semilinear, the functionals are not convex in general. To overcome this difficulty, we first prove the existence and uniqueness of the Nash quasi-equilibrium, which is a weaker formulation of the Nash equilibrium. Next, with additional conditi…
In this paper we focus on the null controllability problem for the heat equation with the so-called inverse square potential and a memory term. To this aim, we first establish the null controllability for a nonhomogeneous singular heat equation by a new Carleman inequality with weights which do not blow up at t=0. Then the null controllability property is proved for the singular heat equation with memory under a condition on the kernel, by means of Kakutani's fixed-point Theorem.
We prove null controllability for linear and semilinear heat equations with dynamic boundary conditions of surface diffusion type. The results are based on a new Carleman estimate for this type of boundary conditions.
In this paper, we discuss our recent works on the null-controllability, the exact controllability, and the stabilization of linear hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space using boundary controls on one side for the optimal time. Under precise and generic assumptions on the boundary conditions on the other side, we first obtain the optimal time for the null and the exact controllability for these systems for a generic source term. We then prove the null-controllability and the exact controllability for any time greater than the optimal time and for any source term. Finally, for homogeneous …
In this paper, we consider the wave equation with both a viscous Kelvin-Voigt and frictional damping as a model of viscoelasticity in which we incorporate an internal control with a moving support. We prove the null controllability when the control region, driven by the flow of an ODE, covers all the domain. The proof is based upon the interpretation of the system as, roughly, the coupling of a heat equation with an ordinary differential equation (ODE). The presence of the ODE for which there is no propagation along the space variable makes the controllability of the system impossible when the…
The problem of local null controllability for the control-affine nonlinear systems $\dot x(t)=f(x(t))+Bu(t)+w(t),$ $t\in[0,T]$ is considered in this paper. The principal requirements on the system are that the LTI pair $\left((\partial f/\partial x)(0), B\right)$ is controllable and the disturbance is limited by the constraint $|f(0)+w(t)|\leq M_d\left(1-\frac{t}{T}\right)^η,$ $M_d\geq0$ and $η>0.$ These properties together with one technical assumption yield a complete answer to the problem of deciding when the null controllable region have a nonempty interior. The criteria obtained involve p…
In this paper we present a null controllability result for a degenerate semilinear parabolic equation with first order terms. The main result is obtained after the proof of a new Carleman inequality for a degenerate linear parabolic equation with first order terms.
