Classical and quantum anharmonic noncommutative oscillators with quartic self-interacting potential are considered and the effect of self-interaction term on the free energy and partition function of both models is calculated to first order in coupling constant.
Multiple scale techniques are well-known in classical mechanics to give perturbation series free from resonant terms. When applied to the quantum anharmonic oscillator, these techniques lead to interesting features concerning the solution of the Heisenberg equations of motion and the Hamiltonian spectrum.
We systematically improve the recent variational calculation of the imaginary part of the ground state energy of the quartic anharmonic oscillator. The results are extremely accurate as demonstrated by deriving, from the calculated imaginary part, all perturbation coefficients via a dispersion relation and reproducing the exact values with a relative error of less than $10^{-5}$. A comparison is also made with results of a Schrödinger calculation based on the complex rotation method.
We present numerical evidence that a simple variational improvement of the ordinary perturbation theory of the quantum anharmonic oscillator can give a convergent sequence of approximations even in the extreme strong coupling limit, the purely anharmonic case. Some of the new techniques of this paper can be extended to renormalizable field theories.
Two possibile applications of the optimized expansion for the free energy of the quantum-mechanical anharmonic oscillator are discussed. The first method is for the finite temperature effective potential; the second one, for the classical effective potential. The results of both methods show a quick convergence and agree well with the exact free energy in the whole range of temperatures. We have studied the underlying algebraic structure of the anharmonic oscillator by using the variational perturbation theory. To the first order of the variational perturbation, the Hamiltonian is found to be factorized into a supersymmetric form in terms of the annihilation and creation operators, which satisfy a q-deformed algebra. This algebraic structure is used to construct all the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian.
The spectral determinant $D(E)$ of the quartic oscillator is known to satisfy a functional equation. This is mapped onto the $A_3$-related $Y$-system emerging in the treatment of a certain perturbed conformal field theory, allowing us to give an alternative integral expression for $D(E)$. Generalising this result, we conjecture a relationship between the $x^{2M}$ anharmonic oscillators and the $A_{2M-1}$ TBA systems. Finally, spectral determinants for general $|x|^α$ potentials are mapped onto the solutions of nonlinear integral equations associated with the (twisted) XXZ and sine-Gordon model…
The effective action for the local composite operator $Φ^2(x)$ in the scalar quantum field theory with $λΦ^4$ interaction is obtained in the expansion in two-particle-point-irreducible (2PPI) diagrams up to five-loops. The effective potential and 2-point Green's functions for elementary and composite fields are derived. The ground state energy as well as one- and two-particle excitations are calculated for space-time dimension $n=1$, when the theory is equivalent to the quantum mechanics of an anharmonic oscillator. The agreement with the exact spectrum of the oscillator is much better than th…
In this paper the relationship between the problem of constructing the ground state energy for the quantum quartic oscillator and the problem of computing mean eigenvalue of large positively definite random hermitean matrices is established. This relationship enables one to present several more or less closed expressions for the oscillator energy. One of such expressions is given in the form of simple recurrence relations derived by means of the method of orthogonal polynomials which is one of the basic tools in the theory of random matrices.
A generalized harmonic oscillator on noncommutative spaces is considered. Dynamical symmetries and physical equivalence of noncommutative systems with the same energy spectrum are investigated and discussed. General solutions of three-dimensional noncommutative harmonic oscillator are found and classified according to dynamical symmetries. We have found conditions under which three-dimensional noncommutative harmonic oscillator can be represented by ordinary, isotropic harmonic oscillator in effective magnetic field.
We present an alternative pathway in the application of the variation improvement of ordinary perturbation theory exposed in [1] which can preserve the internal symmetries of a model by means of a time compactification.
Isotropic oscillator on a plane is discussed where both the coordinate and momentum space are considered to be noncommutative. We also discuss the symmetry properties of the oscillator for three separate cases when both the noncommutative parameters Θand \barΘ satisfy specific relations. We compare the Landau problem with the isotropic oscillator on noncommutative space and obtain a relation between the two noncommutative parameters with the magnetic field of the Landau problem.
We study the 1/N expansion in noncommutative quantum mechanics for the anharmonic and Coulombian potentials. The expansion for the anharmonic oscillator presented good convergence properties, but for the Coulombian potential, we found a divergent large N expansion when using the usual noncommutative generalization of the potential. We proposed a modified version of the noncommutative Coulombian potential which provides a well-behaved 1/N expansion.
We study the Dirac and the klein-Gordon oscillators in a noncommutative space. It is shown that the Klein-Gordon oscillator in a noncommutative space has a similar behaviour to the dynamics of a particle in a commutative space and in a constant magnetic field. The Dirac oscillator in a noncommutative space has a similar equation to the equation of motion for a relativistic fermion in a commutative space and in a magnetic field, however a new exotic term appears, which implies that a charged fermion in a noncommutative space has an electric dipole moment.
We derive the partition function of the one-body and two-body systems of classical noncommutative harmonic oscillator in two dimensions. Then, we employ the path integral approach to the quantum noncommutative harmonic oscillator and derive the partition function of the both systems at finite temperature.
We solve explicitly the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator and the harmonic oscillator in a background magnetic field in noncommutative phase-space without making use of any type of representation. A key observation that we make is that for a specific choice of the noncommutative parameters, the time reversal symmetry of the systems get restored since the energy spectrum becomes degenerate. This is in contrast to the noncommutative configuration space where the time reversal symmetry of the harmonic oscillator is always broken.
The noncommutative harmonic oscillator in arbitrary dimension is examined. It is shown that the $\star$-genvalue problem can be decomposed into separate harmonic oscillator equations for each dimension. The noncommutative plane is investigated in greater detail. The constraints for rotationally symmetric solutions and the corresponding two-dimensional harmonic oscillator are solved. The angular momentum operator is derived and its $\star$-genvalue problem is shown to be equivalent to the usual eigenvalue problem. The $\star$-genvalues for the angular momentum are found to depend on the energy …
A $q$--deformed anharmonic oscillator is defined within the framework of $q$--deformed quantum mechanics. It is shown that the Rayleigh--Schrödinger perturbation series for the bounded spectrum converges to exact eigenstates and eigenvalues, for $q$ close to 1. The radius of convergence becomes zero in the undeformed limit.
We prove one of conjectures, raised by Dorey and Tateo in the connection among the spectral determinant of anharmonic oscillator and vacuum eigenvalues of transfer matrices in field theory and statistical mechanics. The exact sequence of $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ plays a fundamental role in the proof.
Motivated by studies of ultimate speed of computers, we examine the question of minimum time of orthogonalization in a simple anharmonic oscillator and find an upper bound on the rate of computations. Furthermore, we investigate the growth rate of complexity of operation when the system undergoes a definite perturbation. At the phase space of the parameters, by numerical analysis, we find the critical point where beyond that the rate of complexity changes its behavior.
The treatment of anharmonic oscillators (including double-wells) by instanton methods is wellknown. The alternative differential equation method is not so wellknown. Here we reformulate the latter completely parallel to the strong coupling case of the cosine potential and Mathieu equation for which extensive literature and monographs exist.
We use a power-series expansion to calculate the eigenvalues of anharmonic oscillators bounded by two infinite walls. We show that for large finite values of the separation of the walls, the calculated eigenvalues are of the same high accuracy as the values recently obtained for the unbounded case by the inner-product quantization method. We also apply our method to the Morse potential. The eigenvalues obtained in this case are in excellent agreement with the exact values for the unbounded Morse potential.
The concept of a generalized nonanalytic expansion which involves nonanalytic combinations of exponentials, logarithms and powers of a coupling is introduced and its use illustrated in various areas of physics. Dispersion relations for the resonance energies of odd anharmonic oscillators are discussed, and higher-order formulas are presented for cubic and quartic potentials.
Two quantum quartic anharmonic many-body oscillators are introduced. One of them is the celebrated Calogero model (rational $A_n$ model) modified by quartic anharmonic two-body interactions which support the same symmetry as the Calogero model. Another model is the three-body Wolfes model (rational $G_2$ model) with quartic anharmonic interaction added which has the same symmetry as the Wolfes model. Both models are studied in the framework of algebraic perturbation theory and by the variational method.
We apply a recently proposed approximation method to the evaluation of non-Gaussian integral and anharmonic oscillator. The method makes use of the truncated perturbation series by recasting it via the modified Laplace integral representation. The modification of the Laplace transformation is such that the upper limit of integration is cut off and an extra term is added for the compensation. For the non-Gaussian integral, we find that the perturbation series can give accurate result and the obtained approximation converges to the exact result in the $N \to \infty$ limit ($N$ denotes the order …
We outline a remarkably efficient method for generating solutions to quantum anharmonic oscillators with an x^{2M} potential. We solve the Schroedinger equation in terms of a free parameter which is then tuned to give the correct boundary condition by generating a power series expansion of the wavefunction in x and applying a modified Borel resummation technique to obtain the large x behaviour. The process allows us to calculate energy eigenvalues to an arbitrary level of accuracy. High degrees of precision are achieved even with modest computing power. Our technique extends to all levels of e…
Poles of solutions to the Painleve-I equation are intimately related to the theory of the cubic anharmonic oscillator. In particular, poles of integrale tritronquee are in 1-1 correspondence with cubic oscillators that admit the simultaneous solutions of two quantization conditions. We analyze this pair of quantization conditions by means of a suitable version of the complex WKB method.
The energy gap between the first excited state and the ground state is calculated for the quantized anharmonic oscillator in the framework of the functional renormalization group method. The compactly supported smooth regulator is used which includes various types of regulators as limiting cases. It was found that the value of the energy gap depends on the regulator parameters. We argue that the optimization based on the disappearance of the false, broken symmetric phase of the model leads to the Litim's regulator. The least sensitivity on the regulator parameters leads however to an IR regula…
The machinery of computing vacuum expectation values of a time-ordered sequence of position operators of the simple harmonic oscillator is already well established. It rests on a Wick theorem, which enables one to decompose such a quantity in terms of products of \emph{pairwise contractions}, which are vacuum expectation values of a time-ordered sequence of position operators taken two at a time. This result naturally leads to a diagrammatic approach of computing such correlators, and is already well known in the form of Feynman diagrams. We generalise this setup to encompass expectation value…
In our previous paper I (del Valle--Turbiner, Int. J. Mod. Phys. A34, 1950143, 2019) it was developed the formalism to study the general $D$-dimensional radial anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(r)= \frac{1}{g^2}\,\hat{V}(gr)$. It was based on the Perturbation Theory (PT) in powers of $g$ (weak coupling regime) and in inverse, fractional powers of $g$ (strong coupling regime) in both $r$-space and in $(gr)$-space, respectively. As the result it was introduced - the Approximant - a locally-accurate uniform compact approximation of a wave function. If taken as a trial function in variationa…
The evolution of a single mode of the electromagnetic field interacting with a squeezed bath in a Kerr medium is considered. The solution of the corresponding master equation is given numerically. It is argued that the creation of a superposition state (Schrödinger's cat) is better achieved in presence of a squeezed reservoir than of a thermal one.
It is proved that quasi-exactly soluble potentials (QESPs) corresponding to an oscillator with harmonic, quartic and sextic terms, for which the $n+1$ lowest levels of a given parity can be determined exactly, may be approximated by WKB equivalent potentials corresponding to deformed anharmonic oscillators of SU$_q$(1,1) symmetry, which have been used for the description of vibrational spectra of diatomic molecules. This connection allows for the immediate approximate determination of all levels of the QESPs.
Functional renormalization group methods formulated in the real-time formalism are applied to the $O(N)$ symmetric quantum anharmonic oscillator, considered as a $0+1$ dimensional quantum field-theoric model, in the next-to-leading order of the gradient expansion of the one- and two-particle irreducible effective action. The infrared scaling laws and the sensitivity-matrix analysis show the existence of only a single, symmetric phase. The field-independent term of the wavefunction renormalization turned out to be negligible, but its field-dependent piece is noticeable. It is shown that the inf…
We use the Liouville-von Neumann (LvN) approach to study the dynamics and the adiabaticity of a time-dependent driven anharmonic oscillator as an eample of non-equilibrium quantum dynamics. We show that the adiabaticity is minimally broken in the sense that a gaussian wave-packet at the past infinity evolves to coherent states, however slowly the potential changes, its coherence factor is order of the coupling. We also show that the dynamics are governed by an equation of motion similar to the Kepler motion which satisfies the angular momentum conservation.
We introduce a functional perturbative method for treating weakly nonlinear systems coupled with a quantum field bath. We demonstrate using this method to obtain the covariance matrix elements and the correlation functions of a quantum anharmonic oscillator interacting with a heat bath. We identify a fluctuation-dissipation relation based on the nonequilibrium dynamics of this nonlinear open quantum system. To establish its connection with dynamical equilibration, we further examine the energy flows between the anharmonic oscillator and the bath field. The vanishing of the net flow {is an indi…
Conventional weak-coupling perturbation theory suffers from problems that arise from resonant coupling of successive orders in the perturbation series. Multiple-scale perturbation theory avoids such problems by implicitly performing an infinite reordering and resummation of the conventional perturbation series. Multiple-scale analysis provides a good description of the classical anharmonic oscillator. Here, it is extended to study the Heisenberg operator equations of motion for the quantum anharmonic oscillator. The analysis yields a system of nonlinear operator differential equations, which i…
To lowest order of perturbation theory we show that an equivalence can be established between a $\cal PT$-symmetric generalized quartic anharmonic oscillator model and a Hermitian position-dependent mass Hamiltonian $h$. An important feature of $h$ is that it reveals a domain of couplings where the quartic potential could be attractive, vanishing or repulsive. We also determine the associated physical quantities.
We prove that the linear delta expansion for energy eigenvalues of the quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillator converges to the exact answer if the order dependent trial frequency $Ω$ is chosen to scale with the order as $Ω=CN^γ$; $1/3<γ<1/2$, $C>0$ as $N\rightarrow\infty$. It converges also for $γ=1/3$, if $C\geqα_c g^{1/3}$, $α_c\simeq 0.570875$, where $g$ is the coupling constant in front of the operator $q^4/4$. The extreme case with $γ=1/3$, $C=α_cg^{1/3}$ corresponds to the choice discussed earlier by Seznec and Zinn-Justin and, more recently, by Duncan and Jones.
The renormalization group method is applied for obtaining the asymptotic form of the wave function of the quantum anharmonic oscillator by resumming the perturbation series. It is shown that the resumed series is the cumulant of the naive perturbation series. Working out up to the sixth order and performing a further resummation proposed by Bender and Bettencourt, we find that the agreement with the WKB result becomes worse in the higher orders than the fourth at which the agreement is the best.
Poles of integrale tritronquee are in bijection with cubic oscillators that admit the simultaneous solutions of two quantization conditions. We show that the poles lie near the solutions of a pair of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions (the Bohr-Sommerfeld-Boutroux system): the distance between a pole and the corresponding solution of the Bohr-Sommerfeld-Boutroux system vanishes asymptotically.
We point out a misleading treatment in a recent paper published in this Journal [Eur. Phys. J. C (2018)78:106] regarding solutions for the Schrödinger equation with a anharmonic oscillator potential embedded in the background of a cosmic string mapped into biconfluent Heun equation. This fact jeopardizes the thermodynamical properties calculated in this system.
A simple uniform approximation of the logarithmic derivative of the ground state eigenfunction for both the quantum-mechanical anharmonic oscillator and the double-well potential given by $V= m^2 x^2+g x^4$ at arbitrary $g \geq 0$ for $m^2>0$ and $m^2<0$, respectively, is presented. It is shown that if this approximation is taken as unperturbed problem it leads to an extremely fast convergent perturbation theory.
We consider a particle represented by an anharmonic oscillator, coupled to an environment (a field) modeled by an ensemble of anharmonic oscillators, the whole system being confined in a cavity of diameter $L$. Up to the first perturbative order in the quartic interaction (interaction parameter $λ$), we use the formalism of {\it dressed} states introduced in previous publications, to obtain for a large cavity explicit $λ$-dependent formulas for the particle radiation process. These formulas are obtained in terms of the corresponding exact expressions for the linear case. We conclude for the en…
We perform a perturbative calculation of the physical observables, in particular pseudo-Hermitian position and momentum operators, the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian operator, and the classical Hamiltonian for the PT-symmetric cubic anharmonic oscillator, $ H=p^1/(2m)+μ^2x^2/2+iεx^3 $. Ignoring terms of order $ ε^4 $ and higher, we show that this system describes an ordinary quartic anharmonic oscillator with a position-dependent mass and real and positive coupling constants. This observation elucidates the classical origin of the reality and positivity of the energy spectrum. We also discus…
Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) have been suggested as a means to study quantum chaotic behavior in various systems. In this work, I calculate OTOCs for the quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillator with quartic potential, which is classically integrable and has a Poisson-like energy-level distribution. For low temperature, OTOCs are periodic in time, similar to results for the harmonic oscillator and the particle in a box. For high temperature, OTOCs exhibit a rapid (but power-like) rise at early times, followed by saturation consistent with $2\langle x^2\rangle_T \langle p^2\rangle_T$…
Recently, the large-order behavior of correlation functions of the $O(N)$-anharmonic oscillator has been analyzed by us in [L. T. Giorgini et el., Phys. Rev. D 101, 125001 (2020)]. Two-loop corrections about the instanton configurations were obtained for the partition function, and the two-point and four-point functions, and the derivative of the two-point function at zero momentum transfer. Here, we attempt to verify the obtained analytic results against numerical calculations of higher-order coefficients for the $O(1)$, $O(2)$, and $O(3)$ oscillators, and demonstrate the drastic improvement …
We study the entanglement entropy of harmonic oscillators in noncommutative phase space. We propose a new definition of quantum Rényi entropy based on Wigner functions in noncommutative phase space. Using the Rényi entropy, we calculate the entanglement entropy of the ground state of the 2D isotropic harmonic oscillators. We find that for some values of the noncommutative parameters, the harmonic oscillators can be entangled in noncommutative phase space. This is a new entanglement-like effect caused by the noncommutativity of the phase space.
The time evolution of the correlation functions of an ensemble of anharmonic N-component oscillators with O(N) symmetry is described by a flow equation, exact up to corrections of order $1/N^2$. We find effective irreversibility. Nevertheless, analytical and numerical investigation reveals that the system does not reach thermal equilibrium for large times, even when $N\to \infty$. Depending on the initial distribution, the dynamics is asymptotically stable or it exhibits growing modes which break the conditions for the validity of the 1/N expansion for large time. We investigate both classical…
The spectral problem for O(D) symmetric polynomial potentials allows for a partial algebraic solution after analytical continuation to negative even dimensions D. This fact is closely related to the disappearance of the factorial growth of large orders of the perturbation theory at negative even D. As a consequence, certain quantities constructed from the perturbative coefficients exhibit fast inverse factorial convergence to the asymptotic values in the limit of large orders. This quantum mechanical construction can be generalized to the case of quantum field theory.
We extend the notion of quasi-exactly solvable (QES) models from potential ones and differential equations to Bose systems. We obtain conditions under which algebraization of the part of the spectrum occurs. In some particular cases simple exact expressions for several energy levels of an anharmonic Bose oscillator are obtained explicitly. The corresponding results do not exploit perturbation theory and include strong coupling regime. A generic Hamiltonian under discussion cannot, in contrast to QES potential models, be expressed as a polynomial in generators of $sl_{2}$ algebra. The suggested…
