We apply a recently proposed approximation method to the evaluation of non-Gaussian integral and anharmonic oscillator. The method makes use of the truncated perturbation series by recasting it via the modified Laplace integral representation. The modification of the Laplace transformation is such that the upper limit of integration is cut off and an extra term is added for the compensation. For the non-Gaussian integral, we find that the perturbation series can give accurate result and the obtained approximation converges to the exact result in the $N \to \infty$ limit ($N$ denotes the order of perturbation expansion). In the case of anharmonic oscillator, we show that several order result yields good approximation of the ground state energy over the entire parameter space. The large order aspect is also investigated for the anharmonic oscillator.
We obtain tight upper and lower bounds to the eigenvalues of an anharmonic oscillator with a rational potential. We compare our bounds with results given by other approaches.
In this paper we present a straightforward systematic method for the exact and approximate calculation of integrals that appear in formulas for the period of anharmonic oscillators and other problems of interest in classical mechanics.
The concept of a generalized nonanalytic expansion which involves nonanalytic combinations of exponentials, logarithms and powers of a coupling is introduced and its use illustrated in various areas of physics. Dispersion relations for the resonance energies of odd anharmonic oscillators are discussed, and higher-order formulas are presented for cubic and quartic potentials.
Poles of solutions to the Painleve-I equation are intimately related to the theory of the cubic anharmonic oscillator. In particular, poles of integrale tritronquee are in 1-1 correspondence with cubic oscillators that admit the simultaneous solutions of two quantization conditions. We analyze this pair of quantization conditions by means of a suitable version of the complex WKB method.
It is proved that the divergent Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation expansions for the eigenvalues of any odd anharmonic oscillator are Borel summable in the distributional sense to the resonances naturally associated with the system.
We study a $C^*$-dynamical system describing a particle coupled to an infinitely extended heat bath at positive temperature. For small coupling constant we prove return to equilibrium exponentially fast in time. The novelty in this context is to model the particle by a harmonic or anharmonic oscillator, respectively. The proof is based on explicit formulas for the time evolution of Weyl operators in the harmonic oscillator case. In the anharmonic oscillator case, a Dyson's expansion for the dynamics is essential. Moreover, we show in the harmonic oscillator case, that $\R$ is the absolute cont…
We consider an elastic medium with the distortion of a circular curve into a vertical spiral, and investigate the influence of this topological defect on the doubly anharmonic oscillator. We show that the Schrödinger equation for the doubly anharmonic oscillator in the presence of this linear topological defect can be solved analytically. We also obtain the exact expressions for the permitted energies of the ground state of the doubly anharmonic oscillator, and show that the topology of the screw dislocation modifies the spectrum of energy of the doubly anharmonic oscillator.
For a class of infinite lattices of interacting anharmonic oscillators, we study the existence of the dynamics, together with Lieb-Robinson bounds, in a suitable algebra of observables
In our previous paper I (del Valle--Turbiner, Int. J. Mod. Phys. A34, 1950143, 2019) it was developed the formalism to study the general $D$-dimensional radial anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(r)= \frac{1}{g^2}\,\hat{V}(gr)$. It was based on the Perturbation Theory (PT) in powers of $g$ (weak coupling regime) and in inverse, fractional powers of $g$ (strong coupling regime) in both $r$-space and in $(gr)$-space, respectively. As the result it was introduced - the Approximant - a locally-accurate uniform compact approximation of a wave function. If taken as a trial function in variationa…
To lowest order of perturbation theory we show that an equivalence can be established between a $\cal PT$-symmetric generalized quartic anharmonic oscillator model and a Hermitian position-dependent mass Hamiltonian $h$. An important feature of $h$ is that it reveals a domain of couplings where the quartic potential could be attractive, vanishing or repulsive. We also determine the associated physical quantities.
The pseudoperturbative shifted - $l$ expansion technique PSLET [12,16] is generalized for states with arbitrary number of nodal zeros. Interdimensional degeneracies, emerging from the isomorphism between angular momentum and dimensionality of the central force Schrödinger equation, are used to construct part of the D - dimensional anharmonic oscillator bound - state spectra. PSLET results are found to compare excellently with those from a series [5], exact and open perturbation [9] solutions.
We present a unified treatment, including higher-order corrections, of anharmonic oscillators of arbitrary even and odd degree. Our approach is based on a dispersion relation which takes advantage of the PT-symmetry of odd potentials for imaginary coupling parameter, and of generalized quantization conditions which take into account instanton contributions. We find a number of explicit new results, including the general behaviour of large-order perturbation theory for arbitrary levels of odd anharmonic oscillators, and subleading corrections to the decay width of excited states for odd potenti…
Poles of integrale tritronquee are in bijection with cubic oscillators that admit the simultaneous solutions of two quantization conditions. We show that the poles lie near the solutions of a pair of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions (the Bohr-Sommerfeld-Boutroux system): the distance between a pole and the corresponding solution of the Bohr-Sommerfeld-Boutroux system vanishes asymptotically.
We obtain sufficiently accurate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(x,y)=x^{2}y^{2}$ by means of three different methods. Our results strongly suggest that the spectrum of this oscillator is discrete in agreement with early rigorous mathematical proofs and against a recent statement that cast doubts about it.
Two quantum quartic anharmonic many-body oscillators are introduced. One of them is the celebrated Calogero model (rational $A_n$ model) modified by quartic anharmonic two-body interactions which support the same symmetry as the Calogero model. Another model is the three-body Wolfes model (rational $G_2$ model) with quartic anharmonic interaction added which has the same symmetry as the Wolfes model. Both models are studied in the framework of algebraic perturbation theory and by the variational method.
We construct a W^*-dynamical system describing the dynamics of a class of anharmonic quantum oscillator lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. Our approach is based on recently proved Lieb-Robinson bounds for such systems on finite lattices.
We have given a straightforward method to solve the problem of noncentral anharmonic oscillator in three dimensions. The relative propagator is presented by means of path integrals in spherical coordinates. By making an adequate change of time we were able to separate the angular motion from the radial one. The relative propagator is then exactly calculated. The energy spectrum and the corresponding wave functions are obtained.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the spectrum of a quantum system which is a perturbation of a spherically symmetric anharmonic oscillator in dimension 2. We prove that a large part of its eigenvalues can be obtained by Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule applied to the normal form Hamiltonian and also admit an asymptotic expansion at infinity. The proof is based on the generalization to the present context of the normal form approach developed in [BLM20b] (see also [PS10]) for the particular case of $T^d$.
We perform a perturbative calculation of the physical observables, in particular pseudo-Hermitian position and momentum operators, the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian operator, and the classical Hamiltonian for the PT-symmetric cubic anharmonic oscillator, $ H=p^1/(2m)+μ^2x^2/2+iεx^3 $. Ignoring terms of order $ ε^4 $ and higher, we show that this system describes an ordinary quartic anharmonic oscillator with a position-dependent mass and real and positive coupling constants. This observation elucidates the classical origin of the reality and positivity of the energy spectrum. We also discus…
In this contribution to Peter Suranyi Festschrift, we study the Halliday-Suranyi perturbation method for calculating the energy eigenvalues of the quartic anharmonic oscillator.
We point out a misleading treatment in a recent paper published in this Journal [Eur. Phys. J. C (2018)78:106] regarding solutions for the Schrödinger equation with a anharmonic oscillator potential embedded in the background of a cosmic string mapped into biconfluent Heun equation. This fact jeopardizes the thermodynamical properties calculated in this system.
A simple uniform approximation of the logarithmic derivative of the ground state eigenfunction for both the quantum-mechanical anharmonic oscillator and the double-well potential given by $V= m^2 x^2+g x^4$ at arbitrary $g \geq 0$ for $m^2>0$ and $m^2<0$, respectively, is presented. It is shown that if this approximation is taken as unperturbed problem it leads to an extremely fast convergent perturbation theory.
We consider a chain of coupled and strongly pinned anharmonic oscillators subject to a non-equilibrium random forcing. Assuming that the stationary state is approximately Gaussian, we first derive a stationary Boltzmann equation. By localizing the involved resonances, we next invert the linearized collision operator and compute the heat conductivity. In particular, we show that the Gaussian approximation yields a finite conductivity $κ\sim\frac{1}{λ^2T^2}$, for $λ$ the anharmonic coupling strength.
The O(N) invariant quartic anharmonic oscillator is shown to be exactly solvable if the interaction parameter satisfies special conditions. The problem is directly related to that of a quantum double well anharmonic oscillator in an external field. A finite dimensional matrix equation for the problem is constructed explicitly, along with analytical expressions for some excited states in the system. The corresponding Niven equations for determining the polynomial solutions for the problem are given.
A hierarchical model of interacting quantum particles performing anharmonic oscillations is studied in the Euclidean approach, in which the local Gibbs states are constructed as measures on infinite dimensional spaces. The local states restricted to the subalgebra generated by fluctuations of displacements of particles are in the center of the study. They are described by means of the corresponding temperature Green (Matsubara) functions. The result of the paper is a theorem, which describes the critical point convergence of such Matsubara functions in the thermodynamic limit.
We use the Hellman-Feynman (HF) and Hypervirial (HV) theorems, to calculate the perturbative coefficients of the eigenenergies formal series, in the case of the Coulomb potential with a radial linear term and the radial quartic anharmonic oscillator potential. This calculation method, contrary to the usual Rayleigh-Schrodinger Perturbation Theory (RSPT), does not require the calculation of eigenfunctions coefficients. This method is a fast and efficient tool for the calculation of large order eigenenergies coefficients.
We study the Hamiltonian system made of weakly coupled anharmonic oscillators arranged on a three dimensional lattice and subjected to a stochastic forcing mimicking heat baths of temperatures T_1 and T_2 on the hyperplanes at x_1=0 and N. We introduce a truncation of the Hopf equations describing the stationary state of the system which leads to a nonlinear equation for the two-point stationary correlation functions. We prove that these equations have a unique solution which, for N large, is approximately a local equlibrium state satisfying Fourier law that relates the heat current to a local…
We construct Lie algebras arising from commutators of the harmonic Hamiltonian and the perturbed anharmonic Hamiltonian. From there we form a very specific element of the associated Lie group and transform the unperturbed Hamiltonian into the perturbed Hamiltonian minus perturbation energies. An explicit formula is given for the first order perturbation energy of all Hamiltonians of the form H = a^{\dagger}a + 1/2 + λx^n.
We consider a particle represented by an anharmonic oscillator, coupled to an environment (a field) modeled by an ensemble of anharmonic oscillators, the whole system being confined in a cavity of diameter $L$. Up to the first perturbative order in the quartic interaction (interaction parameter $λ$), we use the formalism of {\it dressed} states introduced in previous publications, to obtain for a large cavity explicit $λ$-dependent formulas for the particle radiation process. These formulas are obtained in terms of the corresponding exact expressions for the linear case. We conclude for the en…
We introduce various optimization schemes for highly accurate calculation of the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the one-dimensional anharmonic oscillators. We present several methods of analytically fixing the nonlinear variational parameter specified by the domain of the trigonometric basis functions. We show that the optimized parameter enables us to determine the energy spectrum to an arbitrary accuracy. Also, using the harmonic oscillator basis functions, we indicate that the resulting optimal frequency agrees with the one obtained by the principle of the minimal sensitivity.
We explore the effect of the external magnetic and Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux fields on the energy levels of Dirac particle subjects to mixed scalar and vector anharmonic oscillator field in the two-dimensional (2D) space. We calculate the exact energy eigenvalues and the corresponding un-normalized two-spinor-components wave functions in terms of the chemical potential parameter, magnetic field strength, AB flux field and magnetic quantum number by using the Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method.
The spectral problem for O(D) symmetric polynomial potentials allows for a partial algebraic solution after analytical continuation to negative even dimensions D. This fact is closely related to the disappearance of the factorial growth of large orders of the perturbation theory at negative even D. As a consequence, certain quantities constructed from the perturbative coefficients exhibit fast inverse factorial convergence to the asymptotic values in the limit of large orders. This quantum mechanical construction can be generalized to the case of quantum field theory.
This is the third article in a series of three papers on the resonance energy levels of anharmonic oscillators. Whereas the first two papers mainly dealt with double-well potentials and modifications thereof [see J. Zinn-Justin and U. D. Jentschura, Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 313 (2004), pp. 197 and 269], we here focus on simple even and odd anharmonic oscillators for arbitrary magnitude and complex phase of the coupling parameter. A unification is achieved by the use of PT-symmetry inspired dispersion relations and generalized quantization conditions that include instanton configurations. Higher-order…
We study eigenfunctions of Schrodinger operators -y"+Py on the real line with zero boundary conditions, whose potentials P are real even polynomials with positive leading coefficients. For quartic potentials we prove that all zeros of all eigenfunctions belong to the union of the real and imaginary axes. Similar result holds for sextic potentials and their eigenfunctions with finitely many complex zeros. As a byproduct we obtain a complete classification of such eigenfunctions of sextic potentials.
We construct a generalised expression for the normal ordering of (a+a^{\dagger})^{m} for integral values of m and use the result to study the quantum anharmonic oscillator problem in the Heisenberg approach. In particular, we derive generalised expressions for energy eigen values and frequency shifts for the Hamiltonian H=\frac{x^{2}}{2}+\frac{\dot{x}^{2}}{2}+\fracλ{m}x^{m}. We also derive a closed form first order multi scale perturbation theoretic operator solution of this Hamiltonian with a view to generalise some recent results of Bender and Bettencourt .
Quantum particle is considered confined in a toy-model potential possessing multiple minima. For the specific choice of the family of potentials (in the form of harmonic oscillator plus several logarithmic infinitely high but penetrable barriers), a facilitated tractability of the related bound-state problem is achieved by the use of the (slightly modified) large-N expansion technique. The phenomenological appeal of the possibility of simulation of a certain `relocalization' quantum catastrophe is emphasized.
We study the energy diffusion in a chain of anharmonic oscillators where the Hamiltonian dynamics is perturbed by a local energy conserving noise. We prove that under diffusive rescaling of space-time, energy fluctuations diffuse and evolve following an infinite dimensional linear stochastic differential equation driven by the linearized heat equation. We also give variational expressions for the thermal diffusivity and some upper and lower bounds.
Using N. Euler's theorem on the integrability of the general anharmonic oscillator equation \cite{12}, we present three distinct classes of general solutions of the highly nonlinear second order ordinary differential equation $\frac{d^{2}x}{dt^{2}}+f_{1}\left(t\right) \frac{dx}{dt}+f_{2}\left(t\right) x+f_{3}\left(t\right) x^{n}=0$. The first exact solution is obtained from a particular solution of the point transformed equation $d^{2}X/dT^{2}+X^{n}\left(T\right) =0$, $n\notin \left\{-3,-1,0,1\right\} $, which is equivalent to the anharmonic oscillator equation if the coefficients $f_{i}(t)$, …
Under certain constraints on the parameters a, b and c, it is known that Schroedinger's equation -y"(x)+(ax^6+bx^4+cx^2)y(x) = E y(x), a > 0, with the sextic anharmonic oscillator potential is exactly solvable. In this article we show that the exact wave function y is the generating function for a set of orthogonal polynomials P_n^{(t)}(x) in the energy variable E. Some of the properties of these polynomials are discussed in detail and our analysis reveals scaling and factorization properties that are central to quasi-exact solvability. We also prove that this set of orthogonal polynomials can…
We study the eigenvalue problem $-u"+V(z)u=λu$ in the complex plane with the boundary condition that $u(z)$ decays to zero as $z$ tends to infinity along the two rays $\arg z=-\fracπ{2} \pm \frac{2π}{m+2}$, where $V(z)=-(iz)^m-P(iz)$ for complex-valued polynomials $P$ of degree at most $m-1\geq 2$. We provide an asymptotic formula for eigenvalues and a necessary and sufficient condition for the anharmonic oscillator to have infinitely many real eigenvalues.
We construct a time-dependent double well potential as an exact spectral equivalent to the explicitly time-dependent negative quartic oscillator with a time-dependent mass term. Defining the unstable anharmonic oscillator Hamiltonian on a contour in the lower-half complex plane, the resulting time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is first mapped by an exact solution of the time-dependent Dyson equation to a time-dependent Hermitian Hamiltonian defined on the real axis. When unitary transformed, scaled and Fourier transformed we obtain a time-dependent double well potential bounded from belo…
A new scheme of approximation in quantum theory is proposed which is potentially applicable to arbtrary interacting systems. The method consists in in approximating the original Hamiltonian by one corresponding to a suitable exactly solvable system (with interaction) such that the "quantum average" of both are equal, thus forcing self-consistency.The method transcends the limitations of the variational method and the perturbation theory. The results are systematically improvable by the construction of a improved perturbation theory (IPT) which automatically satisfies the condition of convergenc…
We review the mechanism for transport in strongly anharmonic chains of oscillators near the atomic limit where all oscillators are decoupled. In this regime, the motion of most oscillators remains close to integrable, i.e. quasi-periodic, on very long time scales, while a few chaotic spots move very slowly and redistribute the energy across the system. The material acquires several characteristic properties of dynamical glasses: intermittency, jamming and a drastic reduction of the mobility as a function of the thermodynamical parameters. We consider both classical and quantum systems, though …
We consider the semiclassical Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb R^d$ given by $$\mathrm{i} \hbar \partial_t ψ= \left(-\frac{\hbar^2}{2} Δ+ W_l(x) \right)ψ+ V(t,x)ψ,$$ where $W_l$ is an anharmonic trapping of the form $W_l(x)= \frac{1}{2l}\sum_{j=1}^d x_j^{2l}$, $l\geq 2$ is an integer and $\hbar$ is a semiclassical small parameter. We construct a smooth potential $V(t,x)$, bounded in time with its derivatives, and an initial datum such that the Sobolev norms of the solution grow at a logarithmic speed for all times of order $\log^{\frac12}(\hbar^{-1})$. The proof relies on two ingredients: firs…
In this article a non-perturbative time-dependent technique is used to treat the initial value problem, in Quantum Mechanics context, for a non-equilibrium self-interacting fermionic system in the presence of an external magnetic field. Particularly, in mean-field regime, we study the dynamical symmetry breaking phenomenon, identifying the physical processes associated.
We compute the first-order correction to the correlation functions of the stationary state of a stochastically forced harmonic chain out of equilibrium when a small on-site anharmonic potential is added. This is achieved by deriving a suitable formula for the covariance matrix of the invariant state. We find that the first-order correction of the heat current does not depend on the size of the system. Second, the temperature profile is linear when the harmonic part of the on-site potential is zero. The sign of the gradient of the profile, however, is opposite to the sign of the temperature dif…
We perturb with an additive Gaussian white noise the Hamiltonian system associated to a cubic anharmonic oscillator. The stochastic system is assumed to start from initial conditions that guarantee the existence of a periodic solution for the unperturbed equation. We write a formal expansion in powers of the diffusion parameter for the candidate solution and analyze the probabilistic properties of the sequence of the coefficients. It turns out that such coefficients are the unique strong solutions of stochastic perturbations of the famous Lamé's equation. We obtain explicit solutions in terms …
The power series method has been adapted to compute the spectrum of the Schrodinger equation for central potential of the form $V(r)={d_{-2}\over r^2}+{d_{-1}\over r}+\sum_{i=0}^{\infty} d_{i}r^i$. The bound-state energies are given as zeros of a calculable function, if the potential is confined in a spherical box. For an unconfined potential the interval bounding the energy eigenvalues can be determined in a similar way with an arbitrarily chosen precision. The very accurate results for various spherically symmetric anharmonic potentials are presented.
We extend the notion of quasi-exactly solvable (QES) models from potential ones and differential equations to Bose systems. We obtain conditions under which algebraization of the part of the spectrum occurs. In some particular cases simple exact expressions for several energy levels of an anharmonic Bose oscillator are obtained explicitly. The corresponding results do not exploit perturbation theory and include strong coupling regime. A generic Hamiltonian under discussion cannot, in contrast to QES potential models, be expressed as a polynomial in generators of $sl_{2}$ algebra. The suggested…
The maximal superintegrability of the intrinsic harmonic oscillator potential on N-dimensional spaces with constant curvature is revisited from the point of view of sl(2)-Poisson coalgebra symmetry. It is shown how this algebraic approach leads to a straightforward definition of a new large family of quasi-maximally superintegrable perturbations of the intrinsic oscillator on such spaces. Moreover, the generalization of this construction to those N-dimensional spaces with non-constant curvature that are endowed with sl(2)-coalgebra symmetry is presented. As the first examples of the latter cla…
The energy levels of quantum systems are determined by quantization conditions. For one-dimensional anharmonic oscillators, one can transform the Schrodinger equation into a Riccati form, i.e., in terms of the logarithmic derivative of the wave function. A perturbative expansion of the logarithmic derivative of the wave function can easily be obtained. The Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition can be expressed in terms of a contour integral around the poles of the logarithmic derivative. Its functional form is B_m(E,g) = n + 1/2, where B is a characteristic function of the anharmonic oscillat…
We consider a model of heat conduction which consists of a finite nonlinear chain coupled to two heat reservoirs at different temperatures. We study the low temperature asymptotic behavior of the invariant measure. We show that, in this limit, the invariant measure is characterized by a variational principle. We relate the heat flow to the variational principle. The main technical ingredient is an extension of Freidlin-Wentzell theory to a class of degenerate diffusions.
