We define a quantisation of the J-flow over a projective complex manifold. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of uniqueness of critical points of the J-flow and that these critical points achieve the absolute minimum of an associated energy functional. We show that the existence of a critical point of the J-flow implies the existence of certain canonical metrics, that we call J-balanced metrics. We define a notion of Chow stability for linear systems and relate it to the existence of J-balanced metrics. We also relate the asymptotic Chow stability of a linear system to an analogue of K-semistability that was introduced by Lejmi-Székelyhidi, which we call J-semistability. Then, we relate J-semistability to K-stability when one of the polarisation is the canonical bundle. Eventually, this gives new K-stable polarisations of surfaces of general type.
Let $X$ be a compact Hermitian surface, and $g$ be any fixed Gauduchon metric on $X$. Let $E$ be an Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle over $X$. On the bundle $E$, Donaldson's heat flow is gauge equivalent to a flow of holomorphic structures. We prove that this flow converges, in the sense of Uhlenbeck, to the double dual of the graded sheaf associated to the $g$-Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtration of $X$. This result generalizes a convergence theorem of Daskalopoulos and Wentworth to non-Kähler setting.
We prove the local existence of unique smooth solutions of the Donaldson geometric flow on the space of symplectic forms on a closed smooth four-manifold, representing a fixed cohomology class. It is a semiflow on the Besov space $B^{1,p}_2(M, Λ^2)$ for $p > 4$. The Donaldson geometric flow was introduced by Simon Donaldson in [2]. For a detailed exposition see [6].
This is an exposition of the Donaldson geometric flow on the space of symplectic forms on a closed smooth four-manifold, representing a fixed cohomology class. The original work appeared in [1].
We prove some basic properties of Donaldson's flow of surfaces in a hyperkahler 4-manifold. When the initial submanifold is symplectic with respect to one Kähler form and Lagrangian with respect to another, we show that certain kinds of singularities cannot form, and we prove a convergence result under a condition related to one considered by M.-T. Wang for the mean curvature flow.
Consider $E$ a holomorphic vector bundle over a projective manifold $X$ polarized by an ample line bundle $L$. Fix $k$ large enough, the holomorphic sections $H^0(E\otimes L^k)$ provide embeddings of $X$ in a Grassmanian space. We define the \textit{balancing flow for bundles} as a flow on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of $X$. This flow can be seen as a flow of algebraic type hermitian metrics on $E$. At the quantum limit $k\to \infty$, we prove the convergence of the balancing flow towards the Donaldson heat flow, up to a conformal change. As a by-product, we obtain a numeri…
We establish a lower bound for the Donaldson-Futaki invariant of optimal degenerations produced by the Kähler-Ricci flow in terms of the greatest Ricci lower bound on arbitrary Fano manifolds. As an application, we can generalize the finiteness of the Futaki invariants on Kähler-Ricci solitons obtained by Guo-Phong-Song-Sturm to the space of all Fano manifolds. Also, we discuss the relation to Hisamoto's inequality for the infimum of the $H$-functional.
A smooth four manifold is of finite type $r$ if its Donaldson invariant satisfies D((x^2-4)^r)=0. We prove that every simply connected manifold is of finite type by using the structure of Donaldson invariants in the presence of immersed spheres. More precisely we prove that if a manifold X contains an immersed sphere with $p$ positive double points and a non-negative self-intersection $a$, then it is of finite type with r = [(2p+2-a)/4].
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold with a given ample line bundle $L$. In \cite{Don05}, Donaldson proved that the Calabi energy of a Kähler metric in $c_1(L)$ is bounded from below by the supremum of a normalized version of the minus Donaldson--Futaki invariants of test configurations of $(X,L)$. He also conjectured that the bound is sharp. In this paper, we prove a metric analogue of Donaldson's conjecture, we show that if we enlarge the space of test configurations to the space of geodesic rays in $\mathcal{E}^2$ and replace the Donaldson--Futaki invariant by the radial Mabuchi K-energy $\…
S. K. Donaldson asked whether the lower bound of the Calabi functional is achieved by a sequence the normalized Donaldson-Futaki invariants. We answer the question for the Ricci curvature formalism, in place of the scalar curvature. The principle is that the stability indicator is optimized by the multiplier ideal sheaves of certain weak geodesic ray asymptotic to the geometric flow. We actually prove it in the two case: the inverse Monge-Ampere flow and the Kahler-Ricci flow.
In this note, we study the long time existence of the Calabi flow on $X = \mathbb{C}^n/\mathbb{Z}^n + i\mathbb{Z}^n$. Assuming the uniform bound of the total energy, we establish the non-collapsing property of the Calabi flow by using Donaldson's estimates and Streets' regularity theorem. Next we show that the curvature is uniformly bounded along the Calabi flow on $X$ when the dimension is 2, partially confirming Chen's conjecture. Moreover, we show that the Calabi flow exponentially converges to the flat Kähler metric for arbitrary dimension if the curvature is uniformly bounded, partially c…
Let X be a complex manifold fibered over the base S and let L be a relatively ample line bundle over X. We define relative Kahler-Ricci flows on the space of all Hermitian metrics on L with relatively positive curvature. Mainly three different settings are investigated: the case when the fibers are Calabi-Yau manifolds and the case when L is the relative (anti-) canonical line bundle. The main theme studied is whether posivity in families is preserved under the flows and its relation to the variation of the moduli of the complex structures of the fibres. The quantization of this setting is als…
Inspired by recent work of S. K. Donaldson on constant scalar curvature metrics on toric complex surfaces, we study obstructions to the extension of the Calabi flow on a polarized toric variety. Under some technical assumptions, we prove that the Calabi flow can be extended for all time.
We prove that constant scalar curvature Kähler metric "adjacent" to a fixed Kähler class is unique up to isomorphism. This extends the uniqueness theorem of Donaldson and Chen-Tian, and formally fits into the infinite dimensional G.I.T picture described by Donaldson. We prove that the Calabi flow near a cscK metric exists globally and converges uniformly to a cscK metric in a polynomial rate. Viewed in a Kähler class, the Calabi flow is also shown to be asymptotic to a smooth geodesic ray at infinity. This latter fact is also interesting in the finite dimensional analogue, where we show that t…
Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our p…
The J-flow of S. K. Donaldson and X. X. Chen is a parabolic flow on Kahler manifolds with two Kahler metrics. It is the gradient flow of the J-functional which appears in Chen's formula for the Mabuchi energy. We find a positivity condition in terms of the two metrics which is both necessary and sufficient for the convergence of the J-flow to a critical metric. We use this result to show that on manifolds with ample canonical bundle, the Mabuchi energy is proper on all Kahler classes in an open neighborhood of the canonical class defined by a positivity condition. This improves previous result…
In this short note, we show that given a special Kähler-Einstein degeneration with bounded geometry, for any noncentral fiber, there exists a Kähler-Ricci flow which converges to the Kähler-Einstein metric of the central fiber. As an example, Tian's deformations \cite{Tian97} of the Mukai 3-fold admit Kähler-Ricci flows which converge to Donaldson's Kähler-Einstein metric \cite{Don08} over the Mukai 3-fold.
The works of Donaldson and Mark make the structure of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds clear. It corresponds to certain torsion type invariants counting flow lines and closed orbits of a gradient flow of a circle-valued Morse map on a 3-manifold. We study these invariants using the Morse-Novikov theory and Heegaard splitting for sutured manifolds, and make detailed computations for knot complements.
Following Donaldson's oppenness theorem on deforming a conical Kähler-Einstein metric, we prove a parabolic Schauder-type estimate with respect to conical metrics. As a corollary, we show that the conical Kähler-Ricci Flow exists for short time. The key is to establish the relevant heat kernel estimates, where we use the Weber's formula on Bessel function of the second kind and Carslaw's heat kernel representation in \cite{Car}.
In this paper, we use the affine Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow to prove a generalized Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem on flat Higgs bundles over a class of non-compact affine Gauduchon manifolds.
In this paper, using Donaldson's heat flow, we show that the semi-stability of a Higgs bundle over a compact Kähler manifold implies the existence of approximate Hermitian-Einstein structure on the Higgs bundle.
Let $X$ be a toric surface and $u$ be a normalized symplectic potential on the corresponding polygon $P$. Suppose that the Riemannian curvature is bounded by a constant $C_1$ and $\int_{\partial P} u ~ d σ< C_2, $ then there exists a constant $C_3$ depending only on $C_1, C_2$ and $P$ such that the diameter of $X$ is bounded by $C_3$. Moreoever, we can show that there is a constant $M > 0$ depending only on $C_1, C_2$ and $P$ such that Donaldson's $M$-condition holds for $u$. As an application, we show that if $(X,P)$ is (analytic) relative $K$-stable, then the modified Calabi flow converges t…
In this paper, we study the stability of the conical Kähler-Ricci flows on Fano manifolds. That is, if there exists a conical Kähler-Einstein metric with cone angle $2πβ$ along the divisor, then for any $β'$ sufficiently close to $β$, the corresponding conical Kähler-Ricci flow converges to a conical Kähler-Einstein metric with cone angle $2πβ'$ along the divisor. Here, we only use the condition that the Log Mabuchi energy is bounded from below. This is a weaker condition than the properness that we have adopted to study the convergence before. As corollaries, we give parabolic proofs of Donal…
We consider canonical metrics on Fano manifolds. First we introduce a norm-type functional on Fano manifolds, which has Kahler-Einstein or Kahler-Ricci soliton as its critical point and the Kahler-Ricci flow can be viewed as its (reduced) gradient flow. We then obtain a natural lower bound of this functional. As an application, we prove that Kahler-Ricci soliton, if exists, maximizes Perelman's $μ$-functional without extra assumptions. Second we consider a conjecture proposed by S.K. Donaldson in terms of $\cK$-energy. Our simple observation is that $\cF$-functional, as $\cK$-energy, also inte…
We prove that on any log Fano pair of dimension $n$ whose stability threshold is less than $\frac{n+1}{n}$, any valuation computing the stability threshold has a finitely generated associated graded ring. Together with earlier works, this implies: (a) a log Fano pair is uniformly K-stable (resp. reduced uniformly K-stable) if and only if it is K-stable (resp. K-polystable); (b) the K-moduli spaces are proper and projective; and combining with the previously known equivalence between the existence of Kähler-Einstein metric and reduced uniform K-stability proved by the variational approach, (c) …
In this paper, we prove the Hamilton-Tian conjecture for Kähler-Ricci flow based on a recent work of Liu-Székelyhidi on Tian's partical $C^0$-estimate for poralized Kähler metrics with Ricci bounded below. The Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds will be also discussed.
We prove that any finite energy geodesic ray with a finite Mabuchi slope is maximal in the sense of Berman-Boucksom-Jonsson, and reduce the proof of the uniform Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics to Boucksom-Jonsson's regularization conjecture about the convergence of non-Archimedean entropy functional. As further applications, we show that a uniform K-stability condition for model filtrations and the $\mathcal{J}^{K_X}$-stability are both sufficient conditions for the existence of cscK metrics. The first condition is also conjectured to be necessary. Ou…
We review the notions of (weak) Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure and approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure for Higgs bundles. Then, we construct the Donaldson functional for Higgs bundles over compact Kähler manifolds and we present some basic properties of it. In particular, we show that its gradient flow can be written in terms of the mean curvature of the Hitchin-Simpson connection. We also study some properties of the solutions of the evolution equation associated with that functional. Next, we study the problem of the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures and its rel…
In this paper, we introduce the associated geodesic-Einstein flow for a relatively ample line bundle $L$ over the total space $\mathcal{X}$ of a holomorphic fibration and obtain a few properties of that flow. In particular, we prove that the pair $(\mathcal{X}, L)$ is nonlinear semistable if the {associated} Donaldson type functional is bounded from below and the geodesic-Einstein flow has long-time {existence property}. We also define the associated $S$-classes and $C$-classes for $(\mathcal{X}, L)$ and obtain two inequalities between them when $L$ admits a geodesic-Einstein metric. Finally, …
We associate certain probability measures on $\R$ to geodesics in the space $\H_L$ of positively curved metrics on a line bundle $L$, and to geodesics in the finite dimensional symmetric space of hermitian norms on $H^0(X, kL)$. We prove that the measures associated to the finite dimensional spaces converge weakly to the measures related to geodesics in $\H_L$ as $k$ goes to infinity. The convergence of second order moments implies a recent result of Chen and Sun on geodesic distances in the respective spaces, while the convergence of first order moments gives convergence of Donaldson's $Z$-fu…
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold and denote by $(\mathcal E^p,d_p)$ the metric completion of the space of Kähler potentials $\mathcal H_ω$ with respect to the $L^p$-type path length metric $d_p$. First, we show that the natural analytic extension of the (twisted) Mabuchi K-energy to $\mathcal E^p$ is a $d_p$-lsc functional that is convex along finite energy geodesics. Second, following the program of J. Streets, we use this to study the asymptotics of the weak (twisted) Calabi flow inside the CAT(0) metric space $(\mathcal E^2,d_2)$. This flow exists for all times and coincid…
We study the quantization of coupled Kähler-Einstein (CKE) metrics, namely we approximate CKE metrics by means of the canonical Bergman metrics, so called the ``balanced metrics''. We prove the existence and weak convergence of balanced metrics for the negative first Chern class, while for the positive first Chern class, we introduce some algebro-geometric obstruction which interpolates between the Donaldson-Futaki invariant and Chow weight. Then we show the existence and weak convergence of balanced metrics on CKE manifolds under the vanishing of this obstruction. Moreover, restricted to the …
Motivated by a probabilistic approach to Kahler-Einstein metrics we consider a general non-equilibrium statistical mechanics model in Euclidean space consisting of the stochastic gradient flow of a given (possibly singular) quasi-convex N-particle interaction energy. We show that a deterministic "macroscopic" evolution equation emerges in the large N-limit of many particles. This is a strengthening of previous results which required a uniform two-sided bound on the Hessian of the interaction energy. The proof uses the theory of weak gradient flows on the Wasserstein space. Applied to the setti…
In this short paper, we show that Kähler-Ricci flows over closed manifolds would have scalar curvature blown-up for finite time singularity. Certain control of the blowing-up is achieved with some mild assumption.
We show the existence of non-homothetic ancient flows by powers of curvature embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$ whose entropy is finite. We determine the Morse indices and kernels of the linearized operator of shrinkers to the flows and construct ancient flows by using unstable eigenfunctions of the linearized operator.
We investigate the limiting behavior of the unnormalized Kahler-Ricci flow on a Kahler manifold with a polarized initial Kahler metric. We prove that the Kahler-Ricci flow becomes extinct in finite time if and only if the manifold has positive first Chern class and the initial Kahler class is proportional to the first Chern class of the manifold. This proves a conjecture of Tian for the smooth solutions of the Kahler-Ricci flow.
In this paper, we extend Lotay-Wei's Shi-type estimate from Laplacian flow to more general flows of G$_2$ structures including the modified Laplacian co-flow. Then we prove a version of $κ$-non-collapsing theorem. We will use both of them to study finite time singularities of general flows of G$_2$ structures.
We consider the question of whether solutions of variants of Teichmüller harmonic map flow from surfaces $M$ to general targets can degenerate in finite time. For the original flow from closed surfaces of genus at least $2$, as well as the flow from cylinders, we prove that such a finite-time degeneration must occur in situations where the image of thin collars is `stretching out' at a rate of at least $\text{inj}(M,g)^{-(\frac14+δ)}$, and we construct targets in which the flow from cylinders must indeed degenerate in finite time. For the rescaled Teichmüller harmonic map flow, the condition t…
In this paper, we study the Ricci flow on a closed manifold of dimension $n \ge 4$ and finite time interval $[0,T)~(T < \infty)$ on which the scalar curvature are uniformly bounded. We prove that if such flow of dimension $4 \le n \le 7$ has finite time singularities, then every blow-up sequence of a locally Type I singularity has certain property. Here, locally Type I singularity is what Buzano and Di-Matteo defined.
Let M be a closed oriented three-manifold, whose prime decomposition contains no aspherical factors. We show that for any initial riemannian metric on M the solution to the Ricci flow with surgery, defined in our previous paper math.DG/0303109, becomes extinct in finite time. The proof uses a version of the minimal disk argument from 1999 paper by Richard Hamilton, and a regularization of the curve shortening flow, worked out by Altschuler and Grayson.
We investigate the integral conditions to extend the mean curvature flow in a Riemannian manifold. We prove that the mean curvature flow solution with finite total mean curvature on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$. Moreover, we show that the condition is optimal in some sense.
In this paper, we shall prove that, on a non-flat Riemannian vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold, the smooth solution of the Yang-Mills flow will blow up in finite time if the energy of the initial connection is small enough. We also consider the finite time blow up for the Yang-Mills flow with the initial curvature near the harmonic form. Furthermore, when $E$ is a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold, then $E$ will admit a projective flat structure if the trace free part of Chern curvature is small enough.
In this note, we first prove that the solution of mean curvature flow on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$ if the space-time integration of the norm of the second fundamental form is finite. Secondly, we prove that the solution of certain mean curvature flow on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$ if the space-time integration of the mean curvature is finite. Moreover, we show that these conditions are optimal in some sense.
Given any embedded Lagrangian on a four dimensional compact Calabi-Yau, we find another Lagrangian in the same Hamiltonian isotopy class which develops a finite time singularity under mean curvature flow. This contradicts a weaker version of the Thomas-Yau conjecture regarding long time existence and convergence of Lagrangian mean curvature flow.
