The J-flow of S. K. Donaldson and X. X. Chen is a parabolic flow on Kahler manifolds with two Kahler metrics. It is the gradient flow of the J-functional which appears in Chen's formula for the Mabuchi energy. We find a positivity condition in terms of the two metrics which is both necessary and sufficient for the convergence of the J-flow to a critical metric. We use this result to show that on manifolds with ample canonical bundle, the Mabuchi energy is proper on all Kahler classes in an open neighborhood of the canonical class defined by a positivity condition. This improves previous results of Chen and of the second author. We discuss the implications of this for the problem of the existence of constant scalar curvature Kahler metrics.
We also study the singularities of the J-flow and, under certain conditions (which always hold for dimension two) derive estimates away from a subvariety. In the case of Kahler surfaces we use these estimates to confirm, at least in a certain sense, a conjectural remark of Donaldson that if the J-flow does not converge then it should blow up over some curves of negative self-intersection.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler unibranch complex analytic space of pure dimension. Fix a big class $α$ with smooth representative $θ$ and a model potential $ϕ$ with positive mass. We define and the study non-pluripolar products of quasi-plurisubharmonic functions on $X$. We study the spaces $\mathcal{E}^p(X,θ;[ϕ])$ of finite energy Kähler potentials with prescribed singularities for each $p\geq 1$. We define a metric $d_p$ and show that $(\mathcal{E}^p(X,θ;[ϕ]),d_p)$ is a complete metric space. This construction generalizes the usual $d_p$-metric defined for an ample class.
In this paper we show that on a Fano manifold the convergence of the Kähler-Ricci flow to a Kähler-Einstein metric follows from the integrability of the $L^2$ norm of the Ricci potential for positive time.
We prove existence, uniqueness and convergence of solutions of the degenerate J-flow on Kahler surfaces. As an application, we establish the properness of the Mabuchi energy for Kahler classes in a certain subcone of the Kahler cone on minimal surfaces of general type.
We study the convergence of the Kähler-Ricci flow on a Fano manifold under some stability conditions. More precisely we assume that the first eingenvalue of the $\bar\partial$-operator acting on vector fields is uniformly bounded along the flow, and in addition the Mabuchi energy decays at most logarithmically. We then give different situations in which the condition on the Mabuchi energy holds.
The purpose of this article is to study the strict convexity of the Mabuchi functional along a $C^{1,1}$-geodesic, with the aid of the $ε$-geodesics. We proved the $L^2$-convergence of the fiberwise volume element of the $ε$-geodesic. Moreover, the geodesic is proved to be uniformly fiberwise non-degenerate if the Mabuchi functional is $ε$-affine.
An explicit seminorm $||f||_{#}$ on the vector space of Chow vectors of projective varieties is introduced, and shown to be a generalized Mabuchi energy functional for Chow varieties. The singularities of the Chow varieties give rise to currents supported on their singular loci, while the regular parts are shown to reproduce the Mabuchi energy functional of the corresponding projective variety. Thus the boundedness from below of the Mabuchi functional, and hence the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics, is related to the behavior of the current $[Y_s]$ and the seminorm $||f||_{#}$ along the or…
Over the space of Kähler metrics associated to a fixed Kähler class, we first prove the lower bound of the energy functional $\tilde E^β$, then we provide the criterions of the geodesics rays to detect the lower bound of $\tilde {\mathfrak J}^β$-functional. They are used to obtain the properness of Mabuchi's $K$-energy. The criterions are examined by showing the convergence of the negative gradient flow of $\tilde {\mathfrak J}^β$-functional.
We introduce different Finsler metrics on the space of smooth Kähler potentials that will induce a natural geometry on various finite energy classes $\mathcal E_{\tilde χ}(X,ω)$. Motivated by questions raised by R. Berman, V. Guedj and Y. Rubinstein, we characterize the underlying topology of these spaces in terms of convergence in energy and give applications of our results to existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds.
Suppose $(X,ω)$ is a compact Kähler manifold. We introduce and explore the metric geometry of the $L^{p,q}$-Calabi Finsler structure on the space of Kähler metrics $\mathcal H$. After noticing that the $L^{p,q}$-Calabi and $L^{p'}$-Mabuchi path length topologies on $\mathcal H$ do not typically dominate each other, we focus on the finite entropy space $\mathcal E^{Ent}$, contained in the intersection of the $L^p$-Calabi and $L^1$-Mabuchi completions of $\mathcal H$ and find that after a natural strengthening, the $L^p$-Calabi and $L^1$-Mabuchi topologies coincide on $\mathcal E^{Ent}$. As appl…
Assuming uniform bounds for the curvature, the exponential convergence of the Kähler-Ricci flow is established under two conditions which are a form of stability: the Mabuchi energy is bounded from below, and the dimension of the space of holomorphic vector fields in an orbit of the diffeomorphism group cannot jump up in the limit.
Let L be an ample bundle over a compact complex manifold X. Fix a Hermitian metric in L whose curvature defines a Kähler metric on X. The Hessian of Mabuchi energy is a fourth-order elliptic operator D on functions which arises in the study of scalar curvature. We quantise D by the Hessian E(k) of balancing energy, a function appearing in the study of balanced embeddings. E(k) is defined on the space of Hermitian endomorphisms of H^0(X, L^k), endowed with the L^2-innerproduct. We first prove that the leading order term in the asymptotic expansion of E(k) is D. We next show that if Aut(X,L) is …
Donaldson defined a parabolic flow on Kahler manifolds which arises from considering the action of a group of symplectomorphisms on the space of smooth maps between manifolds. One can define a moment map for this action, and then consider the gradient flow of the square of its norm. Chen discovered the same flow from a different viewpoint and called it the J-flow, since it corresponds to the gradient flow of his J-functional, which is related to Mabuchi's K-energy. In this paper, we show that in the case of Kahler surfaces with two Kahler forms satisfying a certain inequality, the J-flow conve…
We prove that any finite energy geodesic ray with a finite Mabuchi slope is maximal in the sense of Berman-Boucksom-Jonsson, and reduce the proof of the uniform Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics to Boucksom-Jonsson's regularization conjecture about the convergence of non-Archimedean entropy functional. As further applications, we show that a uniform K-stability condition for model filtrations and the $\mathcal{J}^{K_X}$-stability are both sufficient conditions for the existence of cscK metrics. The first condition is also conjectured to be necessary. Ou…
We introduce a holomorphic sheaf E on a Sasaki manifold and study two new notions of stability for E along the Sasaki-Ricci flow related to the `jumping up' of the number of global holomorphic sections of E at infinity. First, we show that if the Mabuchi K-energy is bounded below, the transverse Riemann tensor is bounded in C^{0} along the flow, and the C -infinity closure of the Sasaki structure under the diffeomorphism group does not contain a Sasaki structure with strictly more global holomorphic sections of E, then the Sasaki-Ricci flow converges exponentially fast to a Sasaki-Einstein met…
In this paper, we extend the method in [TZhu5] to study the energy level $L(\cdot)$ of Perelman's entropy $λ(\cdot)$ for Kähler-Ricci flow on a Fano manifold. Consequently, we first compute the supremum of $λ(\cdot)$ in Kähler class $2πc_1(M)$ under an assumption that the modified Mabuchi's K-energy $μ(\cdot)$ defined in [TZhu2] is bounded from below. Secondly, we give an alternative proof to the main theorem about the convergence of Kähler-Ricci flow in [TZhu3].
In this paper, we study the convergence of Calabi-Yau manifolds under Kähler degeneration to orbifold singularities and complex degeneration to canonical singularities (including the conifold singularities), and the collapsing of a family of Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We study the J-flow on Kahler surfaces when the Kahler class lies on the boundary of the open cone for which global smooth convergence holds, and satisfies a nonnegativity condition. We obtain a C^0 estimate and show that the J-flow converges smoothly to a singular Kahler metric away from a finite number of curves of negative self-intersection on the surface. We discuss an application to the Mabuchi energy functional on Kahler surfaces with ample canonical bundle.
We study the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow with initial data of symplectic type, and show that this condition is preserved. In the case of a Fano background with toric symmetry, we establish global existence of the normalized flow. We derive an extension of Perelman's entropy functional to this setting, which yields convergence of nonsingular solutions at infinity. Furthermore, we derive an extension of Mabuchi's $K$-energy to this setting, which yields weak convergence of the flow.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of Kähler-Einstein metrics on Q-Fano varieties with log terminal singularities (and more generally on log Fano pairs) whose Mabuchi functional is proper. We study analogues of the works of Perelman on the convergence of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow, and of Keller, Rubinstein on its discrete version, Ricci iteration. In the special case of (non-singular) Fano manifolds, our results on Ricci iteration yield smooth convergence without any additional condition, improving on previous results. Our result for the Kähler-Ricci flow provides weak convergence in…
We proved the convergence of a sequence of 2 dimensional comapct Kahler-Einstein orbifolds with rational quotient singularities and with some uniform bounds on the volumes and on the Euler characteristics of our orbifods to a Kahler-Einstein 2-dimensional orbifold. Our limit orbifold can have worse singularities than the orbifolds in our sequence. We will also derive some estimates on the norms of the sections of plurianticanonical bundles of our orbifolds in the sequence that we are considering and our limit orbifold.
In this paper, we study the (normalized) Ricci flow on surfaces with conical singularities. Long time existence is proved for cone angle smaller than $2π$. In this case, convergence results are obtained if the Euler number is nonpositive.
In this paper, we give a spectral approximation result for the Laplacian on submanifolds of Euclidean spaces with singularities by the $ε$-neighborhood graph constructed from random points on the submanifold. Our convergence rate for the eigenvalue of the Laplacian is $O\left(\left(\log n/n\right)^{1/(m+2)}\right)$, where $m$ and $n$ denote the dimension of the manifold and the sample size, respectively.
We investigate necessary and sufficient conditions for the extendibility and boundedness of Gaussian curvature, Mean curvature and principal curvatures near all types of singularities on fronts. We also study the convergence to infinite limits of these geometrical invariants and show how this is tightly related to a particular property of uniform approximation of fronts by parallel surfaces.
First we review the definition of a negative point mass singularity. Then we examine the gravitational lensing effects of these singularities in isolation and with shear and convergence from continuous matter. We review the Inverse Mean Curvature Flow and use this flow to prove some new results about the mass of a singularity, the ADM mass of the manifold, and the capacity of the singularity. We describe some particular examples of these singularities that exhibit additional symmetries.
We prove under suitable hypotheses that convergence of integral varifolds implies convergence of associated mod 2 flat chains and subsequential convergence of associated integer-multiplicity rectifiable currents. The convergence results imply restrictions on the kinds of singularities that can occur in mean curvature flow.
In this paper, we study the stability of the conical Kähler-Ricci flows on Fano manifolds. That is, if there exists a conical Kähler-Einstein metric with cone angle $2πβ$ along the divisor, then for any $β'$ sufficiently close to $β$, the corresponding conical Kähler-Ricci flow converges to a conical Kähler-Einstein metric with cone angle $2πβ'$ along the divisor. Here, we only use the condition that the Log Mabuchi energy is bounded from below. This is a weaker condition than the properness that we have adopted to study the convergence before. As corollaries, we give parabolic proofs of Donal…
We study the convergence of complete non-compact conformally flat solutions to the Yamabe flow to Yamabe steady solitons. We also prove the existence of Type II singularities which develop at either a finite time $T$ or as $t \to +\infty$.
In our previous work [PSSW], we showed that the Ricci flow on S^2 whose initial metric has conical singularities \sum_{j=1}^k β_j[p_j] converges to a constant curvature metric with conic singularities (in the stable and semi-stable cases) or to a gradient shrinking soliton with conical singularities (in the unstable case). The purpose of this note is to show that in the unstable case, that is, the case where β_k>β_k'=\s_{j<k}β_j, that the limiting metric is the unique shrinking soliton with cone singularity β_k[p_\infty]+β_k'[q_\infty]. This verifies the prediction made in [PSSW].
We show that degenerate complex Monge-Ampere equations in a big cohomology class of a compact Kaehler manifold can be solved using a variational method independent of Yau's theorem. Our formulation yields in particular a natural pluricomplex analogue of the classical logarithmic energy of a measure. We also investigate Kaehler-Einstein equations on Fano manifolds. Using continuous geodesics in the closure of the space of Kaehler metrics and Berndtsson's positivity of direct images we extend Ding-Tian's variational characterization and Bando-Mabuchi's uniqueness result to singular Kaehler-Einst…
In this paper we prove that for a given Kähler-Ricci flow with uniformly bounded Ricci curvatures in an arbitrary dimension, for every sequence of times $t_i$ converging to infinity, there exists a subsequence such that $(M,g(t_i + t))\to (Y,\bar{g}(t))$ and the convergence is smooth outside a singular set (which is a set of codimension at least 4) to a solution of a flow. We also prove that in the case of complex dimension 2, without any curvature assumptions we can find a subsequence of times such that we have a convergence to a Kähler-Ricci soliton, away from finitely many isolated singular…
In this paper we present several curvature estimates and convergence results for solutions of the Ricci flow. The curvature estimates depend on smallness of certain local space-time integrals of the norm of the Riemann curvature tensor, while the convergence results require finiteness of space-time integrals of the norm of the Riemann curvature tensor. They also serve as characterizations of blow-up singularities.
Several results on existence and convergence of the Yang-Mills flow in dimension four are given. We show that a singularity modeled on an instanton cannot form within finite time. Given low initial self-dual energy, we then study convergence of the flow at infinite time. If an Uhlenbeck limit is anti-self-dual and has vanishing self-dual second cohomology, then no bubbling occurs and the flow converges exponentially. We also recover Taubes's existence theorem, and prove asymptotic stability in the appropriate sense.
The Type IIB flow is a flow of conformally balanced complex manifolds introduced by Phong, Picard, and Zhang, about whose singularities little is as yet known. We formulate convergence criteria for the Gromov-Cheeger-Hamilton convergence of sequences of Hermitian manifolds, and apply them to precompactness theorems and the existence of singularity models for the Type IIB flow, in analogy with Hamilton's classic compactness theorems and classification of singularities for the Ricci flow.
In this note we establish exponentially fast smooth convergence for global curve diffusion flows, and discuss open problems relating embeddedness to global existence (Giga's conjecture) and the shape of Type I singularities (Chou's conjecture).
We establish a regularity result for the metric on any 4-dimensional extremal Kähler manifold, and a weak compactness theorem on the space of such metrics. Specifically, the sectional curvature at a point is bounded when the quantity $L^2(|\Riem|)$ in a surrounding ball is sufficiently small compared to the pointwise norm of its scalar curvature. Consequently sequences of 4-dimensional extremal Kähler metrics with uniformly bounded Calabi energies and scalar curvature have convergent subsequences in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. Gromov-Hausdorff limits are length spaces with the structure of …
We study the convergence behavior of the general inverse $σ_k$-flow on Kähler manifolds with initial metrics satisfying the Calabi Ansatz. The limiting metrics can be either smooth or singular. In the latter case, interesting conic singularities along negatively self-intersected sub-varieties are formed as a result of partial blow-up.
In this paper, we study the singularities of two extended Ricci flow systems --- connection Ricci flow and Ricci harmonic flow using newly-defined curvature quantities. Specifically, we give the definition of three types of singularities and their corresponding singularity models, and then prove the convergence. In addition, for Ricci harmonic flow, we use the monotonicity of functional $ν_α$ to show the connection between finite-time singularity and shrinking Ricci harmonic soliton. At last, we explore the property of ancient solutions for Ricci harmonic flow.
Given any embedded Lagrangian on a four dimensional compact Calabi-Yau, we find another Lagrangian in the same Hamiltonian isotopy class which develops a finite time singularity under mean curvature flow. This contradicts a weaker version of the Thomas-Yau conjecture regarding long time existence and convergence of Lagrangian mean curvature flow.
We show some results for the $L^2$ curvature flow linked by the theme of addressing collapsing phenomena. First we show long time existence and convergence of the flow for $SO(3)$-invariant initial data on $S^3$, as well as a long time existence and convergence statement for three-manifolds with initial $L^2$ norm of curvature chosen small with respect only to the diameter and volume, which are both necessary dependencies for a result of this kind. In the critical dimension $n = 4$ we show a related low-energy convergence statement with an additional hypothesis. Finally we exhibit some finite …
Cosmological singularity theorems such as that of Hawking and Penrose assume local curvature conditions as well as global ones like the existence of a compact (achronal) slice. Here, we prove a new singularity theorem for chronological spacetimes that satisfy what we call a `past null focusing' condition. Such a condition forces all null geodesics with future endpoint to develop a pair of conjugate points if past complete. By the Einstein field equations, such a condition will be satisfied if the density of matter fields remains sufficiently high towards the past of the spacetime, as may be ex…
The Type IIA flow is a flow of 3-forms on a 6-dimensional symplectic manifold. It was introduced by Fei, Phong, Picard, and Zhang in \cite{FPPZb}. There is little known about the singularities of this flow in general. We formulate and prove convergence theorems for this flow. We also describe the singularity models for this flow.
We proved a uniqueness theorem of tangent connections for a Yang-Mills connection with an isolated singularity with a quadratic growth of the curvature at the singularity. We also obtained controls over the rate of the asymptotic convergence of the connection to the tangent connection under assumptions that the connection is stationary or the tangent connection is integrable. There are parallel results for the cones at infinity of a Yang-Mills connection on an asymptotically flat manifold. We also gave an application of our methods to the Yang-Mills flow and proved that the Yang-Mills flow exi…
We establish the short-time existence of the Ricci flow on surfaces with a finite number of conic points, all with cone angle between 0 and $2π$, where the cone angles remain fixed or change in some smooth prescribed way. For the angle-preserving flow we prove long-time existence and convergence. When the Troyanov angle condition is satisfied (equivalently, when the data is logarithmically K-stable), the flow converges to the unique constant curvature metric with the given cone angles; if this condition is not satisfied, the flow converges subsequentially to a soliton. This is the one-dimensio…
