We formulate a perturbation expansion for the effective action in a new approach to the functional renormalization group method based on the concept of composite fields for regulator functions being their most essential ingredients. We demonstrate explicitly the principal difference between the properties of effective actions in these two approaches existing already on the one-loop level in a simple gauge model.
In the context of Differential Renormalization, using Constrained Differential Renormalization rules at one loop, we show how to obtain concrete results in two loop calculations without making use of Ward identities. In order to do that, we obtain a list of integrals with overlapping divergences compatible with CDR that can be applied to various two loop background field calculations. As an example, we obtain the two loop coefficient of the beta function of QED, SuperQED and Yang-Mills theory.
Using Dyson--Schwinger equations within an approach developed by Broadhurst and Kreimer and the renormalization group, we show how high loop order of the renormalization group coefficients can be efficiently computed in a supersymmetric model.
Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) mapping plays a crucial role in the calculation of the large-size expansion for polygonal Wilson loops in confining gauge theories using effective string theory (EST). Recently a new analytical regularization based on SC mapping was suggested and successfully applied to the calculation of the two-loop contribution of EST in the case of triangular Wilson loops. We prove that this analytical renormalization produces finite results for arbitrary polygonal Wilson loops and show that the result of the analytical renormalization for a given polygonal contour is independent o…
We present the full two-loop $β$-functions for the minimal supersymmetric standard model couplings, extended to include R-parity violating couplings through explicit R-parity violation.
We study the one loop renormalization in the most general metric-dilaton theory with second derivative only. In constant background dilaton theory, there are two types of gravity background which enable the theory renormalizable at one-loop level. We show this concretely to discuss on the spherical symmetric background.
We formulate a renormalized running coupling expansion for the $β$--function and the potential of the renormalized $ϕ^4$--trajectory on four dimensional Euclidean space-time. Renormalization invariance is used as a first principle. No reference is made to bare quantities. The expansion is proved to be finite to all orders of perturbation theory. The proof includes a large momentum bound on the connected free propagator amputated vertices.
We formulate a method of performing non-perturbative calculations in quantum field theory, based upon a derivative expansion of the exact renormalization group. We then proceed to apply this method to the calculation of critical exponents for three dimensional O(N) symmetric theory. Finally we discuss how the approximation scheme manages to reproduce some exactly known solutions in critical phenomena.
We study how to compute the operator product expansion coefficients in the exact renormalization group formalism. After discussing possible strategies, we consider some examples explicitly, within the $ε$-expansions, for the Wilson-Fisher fixed points of the real scalar theory in $d=4-ε$ dimensions and the Lee-Yang model in $d=6-ε$ dimensions. Finally we discuss how our formalism may be extended beyond perturbation theory.
The quantum properties of two-dimensional matter-dilaton gravity ---which includes a large family of actions for two-dimensional gravity (in particular, string-inspired models)--- are investigated. The one-loop divergences in linear covariant gauges are calculated and the structure of the one-loop renormalization is studied. The explicit forms of the dilaton potential, dilaton-Maxwell, and dilaton-scalar couplings for which the theory is one-loop multiplicatively renormalizable are found. A comparison with the one-loop renormalization structure of four-dimensional gravity-matter theory is give…
The locally BPS Wilson loop and the pure gauge Wilson loop map under AdS/CFT duality to string world-sheet boundaries with standard and alternate quantizations of the world-sheet fields. This implies an RG flow between the two operators, which we verify at weak coupling. Many additional loop operators exist at strong coupling, with a rich pattern of RG flows.
We propose a gauge invariant formulation of the exact renormalization group equation for nonsupersymmetric pure U(N) Yang-Mills theory, based on the construction by Tim Morris. In fact we show that our renormalization group equation amounts to a regularized version of the loop equation, thereby providing a direct relation between the exact renormalization group and the Schwinger-Dyson equations. We also discuss a possible implication of our formulation to the holographic correspondence of the bulk gravity and the boundary gauge theory.
We present two-loop renormalization of $ϕ^3$-model effective action by using the background field method and cutoff momentum regularization. In this paper, we also study a derivation of the quantum equation of motion and its application to the renormalization.
We prove the stability of the torus, and with suitable rescaling, hyperbolic space under the (two-loop) renormalization group flow for the nonlinear sigma model. To prove stability we use similar techniques to \cite{GIK02}, where the stability of the torus under Ricci flow was first established. The main technical tool is maximal regularity theory.
By explicit calculation of the two-loop QCD corrections we show that for singlet axial and vector currents the full off-shell <VVA> correlation function in the limit of massless fermions is proportional to the one-loop result, when calculated in the MS-bar scheme. By the same finite renormalization which is needed to make the one-loop anomaly exact to all orders, we arrive at the conclusion that two-loop corrections are absent altogether, for the complete correlator not only its anomalous part. In accordance with the one-loop nature of the <VVA> correlator, one possible amplitude, which seems …
The ultraviolet singular structure of the bulk-to-bulk propagators for higher spin gauge fields in $AdS_{4}$ space is analyzed in details. Possible interactions with the Higgs scalar and the corresponding one loop mass renormalization are studied. This mass renormalization is finite and connected with the anomalous dimensions of those currents in the corresponding boundary $CFT_{3}$ that cease to be conserved when the interaction is switched on. In particular it is proportional to $\ell-2$.
Quantum electrodynamics (QED) fixed in the 't~Hooft-Veltman gauge is renormalized to three loops in the MSbar scheme. The beta-functions and anomalous dimensions are computed as functions of the usual QED coupling and the additional coupling, xi, which is introduced as part of the nonlinear gauge fixing condition. Similar to the maximal abelian gauge of quantum chromodynamics, the renormalization of the gauge parameter is singular.
We renormalize to three loops a version of the Thirring model where the fermion fields not only lie in the fundamental representation of a non-abelian colour group SU(N_c) but also depend on the number of flavours, N_f. The model is not multiplicatively renormalizable in dimensional regularization due to the generation of evanescent operators which emerge at each loop order. Their effect in the construction of the true wave function, mass and coupling constant renormalization constants is handled by considering the projection technique to a new order. Having constructed the MSbar renormalizati…
In this paper we construct a version of the standard model gauge sector on noncommutative space-time which is one-loop renormalizable to first order in the expansion in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$. The one-loop renormalizability is obtained by the Seiberg-Witten redefinition of the noncommutative gauge potential for the model containing the usual six representations of matter fields of the first generation.
The vanishing of the cosmological constant and the non-renormali-zation theorem are verified at two loops by explicit computation using the hyperelliptic language and the newly obtained chiral measure of D'Hoker and Phong. A set of identities is found which is used in the verification of the non-renormalization theorem and leads to a great simplification of the calculation of the four-particle amplitude at two loops.
Effective potential for scalar $λϕ^4$ theory is obtained using the exact renormalization group method which includes both the usual one-loop contribution as well as the dominant higher loop effects. Our numerical calculation indicates a breakdown of naive one-loop result for sufficiently large renormalized coupling constant.
This PhD thesis is devoted to show that differential renormalization is a simple and useful renormalization method that we can use when dealing with gauge theories. In this work, it is shown how the one-loop results of Constraint Differential Renormalization can be fruitfully applied when renormalizing two-loop amplitudes. As an example of this procedure, the two-loop beta functions of various relevant gauge theories are obtained (QED, SuperQED, Yang-Mills and N=1 SuperYM) without making use of the Ward identities, which are mandatory in the standard differential renormalization procedure. Als…
Manifest T-duality covariance of the one-loop renormalization group flows is shown for a generic bosonic sigma model with an abelian isometry, by referring a set of previously derived consistency conditions to the tangent space of the target. For a restricted background, T-duality transformations are then studied at the next order, and the ensuing consistency conditions are found to be satisfied by the two-loop Weyl anomaly coefficients of the model. This represents an extremely non-trivial test of the covariance of renormalization group flows under T-duality, and a stronger condition than T-d…
Two-loop $β$-function and anomalous dimension are calculated for N=1 supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics, regularized by higher derivatives in the minimal subtraction scheme. The result for two-loop contribution to the $β$-function appears to be equal to 0, does not depend on the form of regularizing term and does not lead to anomaly puzzle. Two-loop anomalous dimension can be also made independent on parameters of higher derivative regularization by a special choice of subtraction scheme.
We calculate contributions to the one-loop renormalization in the spinor sector of the minimal Lorentz-violating extended QED in the second order in Lorentz-breaking parameters. From the renormalizability viewpoint, we show that the inclusion of some of the Lorentz-breaking terms in the model is linked to the presence of others. We also demonstrate that the Ward identities are satisfied up to this order.
In this paper we construct a version of the standard model gauge sector on noncommutative space-time which is one-loop renormalizable to first order in the expansion in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$.
We demonstrate how to extract all the one-loop renormalization group equations for arbitrary quantum field theories from knowledge of an appropriate Seeley--DeWitt coefficient. By formally solving the renormalization group equations to one loop, we renormalization group improve the classical action, and use this to derive the leading-logarithms in the one-loop effective action for arbitrary quantum field theories.
We study systematically, through two loops, the divergence structure of the supersymmetric WZ model defined on the N=1/2 nonanticommutative superspace. By introducing a spurion field to represent the supersymmetry breaking term F^3 we are able to perform our calculations using conventional supergraph techniques. Divergent terms proportional to F, F^2 and F^3 are produced (the first two are to be expected on general grounds) but no higher-point divergences are found. By adding ab initio F and F^2 terms to the original lagrangian we render the model renormalizable. We determine the renormalizati…
We calculate the beta-functions of the general massive (p,q) supersymmetric sigma model to two loop order using (1,0) superfields. The conditions for finiteness are discussed in relation to (p,q) supersymmetry. We also calculate the effective potential using component fields to one loop order and consider the possibility of perturbative breaking of supersymmetry. The effect of one loop finite local counter terms and the ultra-violet behaviour of the off-shell (p,q) models to all orders in perturbation theory are also addressed.
The quantum entanglement entropy of an eternal black hole is studied. We argue that the relevant Euclidean path integral is taken over fields defined on $α$-fold covering of the black hole instanton. The statement that divergences of the entropy are renormalized by renormalization of gravitational couplings in the effective action is proved for non-minimally coupled scalar matter. The relationship of entanglement and thermodynamical entropies is discussed.
The perturbative evaluation of the effective action can be expanded in powers of derivatives of the external field. We apply the renormalization group equation to the term in the effective action that is second order in the derivatives of the external field and all orders in a constant external field, considering both massless scalar $ϕ_4^4$ model and massless scalar electrodynamics. A so-called ``on shell'' renormalization scheme permits one to express this ``kinetic term'' for the scalar field entirely in terms of the renormalization group functions appropriate for this scheme. These renorma…
As a check of the first massive integrated vertex operator in the pure spinor formalism constructed in arXiv:1802.04486, we compute the one loop 2-point function of the stable non-BPS massive states in SO(32) heterotic string theory. This allows us to compute the one loop renormalized mass of these states using the pure spinor formalism. Our results are in agreement with the corresponding results obtained by Sen using the RNS formalism. This provides an instance of the equivalence between the RNS and the pure spinor formalism for the massive states at loop level.
In this paper, we study the quantum behavior of the noncommutative Jackiw-Pi model. After establishing the Becchi-Rouet-Store-Tyutin (BRST) invariant action, the perturbative renormalizability is discussed, allowing us to introduce the renormalized mass and gauge coupling. We then proceed to compute the one-loop correction to the basic 1PI functions, necessary to determine the renormalized parameters (mass and charge), next we discuss the physical behaviour of these parameters.
Divergent part of the one-loop effective action for the Yang-Mills theory in a special gauge containing forth degrees of ghost fields and allowing addition of BRST-invariant mass term is calculated by the generalized t'Hooft-Veltman technique. The result is BRST-invariant and defines running mass, coupling constant and parameter of the gauge.
We discuss the cyclic Wilson loop, i.e. a rectangular Wilson loop that spans the entire compactified time axis in the imaginary time formalism. The result of a perturbative calculation at $O(α_s^2)$ is given, with the main focus on the ultraviolet divergences of this operator. Based on a general analysis of divergences in loop diagrams, we find that, unlike usual Wilson loops, the cyclic loop does not have cusp divergences but intersection divergences, where the intersections arise due to the periodic boundary conditions. As a result, the cyclic Wilson loop itself is not multiplicatively renor…
We obtain analytical five-loop results for the renormalization group $β$-function of Quantum Electrodynamics with the single lepton in different renormalization schemes. The theoretical consequences of the results obtained are discussed.
We calculate the renormalization constants of the maximally extended N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in the dimensional reduction scheme up to four loops. We have found, that the beta-function is zero both from gauge and Yukawa vertices.
We study the renormalization of the O(N) model using the auxiliary field formalism (Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation) in the 1/N expansion at finite temperature. We provide the general strategy of renormalization for arbitrary order, and make calculation up to next-to-leading order. We show that renormalization is possible for any values of the condensates, prove the temperature independence of the counterterms and determine the cutoff dependence of the first nontrivial counterterm parts.
We present new analytical five-loop Feynman-gauge results for the anomalous dimensions of ghost field and -vertex, generalizing the known values for SU(3) to a general gauge group. Together with previously published results on the quark mass and -field anomalous dimensions and the Beta function, this completes the 5-loop renormalization program of gauge theories in that gauge.
We describe in detail the constrained procedure of differential renormalization and develop the techniques required for one-loop calculations. As an illustration we renormalize Scalar QED and show that the two-, three- and four-point Ward identities are automatically satisfied.
The scaling properties of selfavoiding polymerized membranes are studied using renormalization group methods. The scaling exponent νis calculated for the first time at two loop order. νis found to agree with the Gaussian variational estimate for large space dimension d and to be close to the Flory estimate for d=3.
We show that the general Lorentz- and CPT-violating extension of quantum electrodynamics is one-loop renormalizable. The one-loop Lorentz-violating beta functions are obtained, and the running of the coefficients for Lorentz and CPT violation is determined. Some implications for theory and experiment are discussed.
On the example of the three-dimensional Ising model, we show that nonperturbative renormalization group equations allow one to obtain very accurate critical exponents. Implementing the order $\partial^4$ of the derivative expansion leads to $ν=0.632$ and to an anomalous dimension $η=0.033$ which is significantly improved compared with lower orders calculations.
All one-loop renormalization constants for Non-Abelian gauge theory are computed in details by using the symmetry-preserving Loop Regularization method proposed in\cite{LR1,LR2}. The resulting renormalization constants are manifestly shown to satisfy Ward-Takahaski-Slavnov-Taylor identities, and lead to the well-known one loop $β$ function for Non-Abelian gauge theory of QCD\cite{GWP}. The loop regularization method is realized in the dimension of original field theories, it maintains not only symmetries but also divergent behaviors of original field theories with the introduction of two energ…
We present three-loop formulas for the additive renormalization constant A(u,epsilon) and associated renormalization group function B(u) for the specific heat of the O(n) symmetric phi^4 model. Using this result, we obtain also the amplitude function above Tc within the minimally renormalied theory at fixed d=3. At the fixed point, the three-loop correction to B(u) turns out to be small (about 3% for n=2). We note that a correction of this size may become important at the level of accuracy expected in future experiments.
We clarify a discrepancy between two previous calculations of the two-loop QED Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian, both performed in proper-time regularization, by calculating this quantity in dimensional regularization.
We investigate the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of the scalar Galileon model in flat space. We discuss different expansion schemes of the Galileon truncation, including a heat-kernel based derivative expansion, a vertex expansion in momentum space and a curvature expansion in terms of a covariant geometric formulation. We find that the Galileon symmetry prevents a quantum induced renormalization group running of the Galileon couplings. Consequently, the Galileon truncation only features a trivial Gaussian fixed point.
We analize the impact of two-loop renormalization group equations on the $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_w\times U(1)_Y$ gauge couplings unification in various supersymmetric theories. In general the presence of superfields in higher representation than the doublet spoil the gauge couplings unification at one-loop. The situation is more interesting when the renormalization group equations are calculated at two-loop. In this case we show that the unification of the gauge couplings can be achieved for models with triplet superfield(s). In the analysis of the models with triplet superfield(s) we show that t…
We give a short overview of the renormalization properties of rectangular Wilson loops, the Polyakov loop correlator and the cyclic Wilson loop. We then discuss how to renormalize loops with more than one intersection, using the simplest non-trivial case as an illustrative example. Our findings expand on previous treatments. The generalized exponentiation theorem is applied to the Polyakov loop correlator and used to renormalize linear divergences in the cyclic Wilson loop.
We determine the three loop anomalous dimensions of the quark, centre and off-diagonal gluons, centre and off-diagonal ghosts and the gauge fixing parameters in the maximal abelian gauge for an arbitrary colour group in the MSbar renormalization scheme at three loops. We show that the three loop MSbar beta-function emerges from the renormalization of the centre gluon and also deduce the anomalous dimension of the BRST invariant dimension two mass operator. Moreover, we demonstrate that in the limit that the dimension of the centre of the group tends to zero, the anomalous dimensions of the qua…
We present five-loop results for the renormalization of various models with a cubic interaction (in ${d = 6 - 2 \varepsilon}$ dimensions). For the scalar model and its ${O(n)}$-symmetric extension we provide renormalization constants, anomalous dimensions and critical exponents. We discuss in detail the method of calculation, and provide all counterterms up to five loops. This allows one to consider generalizations of the ${φ^3}$ theory to other symmetries.
We provide the renormalization constants of the axial current operators, both singlet and non-singlet, in dimensional regularization up to four-loop order in QCD, determined using the off-shell Ward-Takahashi identity for an axial current with a non-anticommuting $γ_5$. A possible application of the result for the singlet axial current operator is the extraction of the non-decoupling mass logarithms in the axial quark form factors.
We examine the renormalizability problem of spontaneously broken non-Abelian gauge theory on noncommutative spacetime. We show by an explicit analysis of the U(2) case that ultraviolet divergences can be removed at one loop level with the same limited number of renormalization constants as required on commutative spacetime. We thus push forward the efforts towards constructing realistic models of gauge interactions on noncommutative spacetime.
