We calculate contributions to the one-loop renormalization in the spinor sector of the minimal Lorentz-violating extended QED in the second order in Lorentz-breaking parameters. From the renormalizability viewpoint, we show that the inclusion of some of the Lorentz-breaking terms in the model is linked to the presence of others. We also demonstrate that the Ward identities are satisfied up to this order.
Using the Worldline formalism of QED we compute the two-loop effective action induced by a charged scalar, respectively spinor particle in a general constant electromagnetic field.
We show that the Hamiltonian $ h= H_{QED}+H_2$, where $H_{QED}$ is the spinor QED Hamiltonian and $H_2$ is the positive transversal photon mass term, is unbounded from below if the electromagnetic coupling constant $e^2$ is small enough, $e^2<e^2_0 $, and the transversal photon squared mass parameter $M^2$ is not too large: $0\leq M^2<e^2l^2c$, here, $l$ is the cut-off parameter, and $c$ and $e^2_0$, positive constants which do not depend on any parameters.
Using the Schwinger-Keldysh (closed time path or CTP) and Feynman-Vernon influence functional formalisms we obtain an expression for the influence functional in terms of Bogoliubov coefficients for the case of spinor quantum electrodynamics. Then we derive a CTP effective action in semiclassical approximation and its cumulant expansion. Using it we obtain a equation for the description of the charged particle creation in electric field and of backreaction of charged quantum fields and their fluctuations on time evolution of this electric field. Also an intimate connection between CTP effective…
We use the worldline path-integral approach to the Bern-Kosower formalism for developing a new algorithm for calculation of the sum of all diagrams with one spinor loop and fixed numbers of external and internal photons. The method is based on worldline supersymmetry, and on the construction of generalized worldline Green functions. The two-loop QED $β$ -- function is calculated as an example.
We study the one-loop two point functions of the gauge, scalar and spinor fields for a Horava-Lifshitz-like QED with critical exponent $z=2$. It turns out that, in certain cases, the dynamical restoration of the Lorentz symmetry at low energies can take place. We also analyze the three point vertex function of the gauge and spinor fields and prove that the triangle anomaly identically vanishes in this theory.
Quantum electrodynamics (QED) fixed in the 't~Hooft-Veltman gauge is renormalized to three loops in the MSbar scheme. The beta-functions and anomalous dimensions are computed as functions of the usual QED coupling and the additional coupling, xi, which is introduced as part of the nonlinear gauge fixing condition. Similar to the maximal abelian gauge of quantum chromodynamics, the renormalization of the gauge parameter is singular.
We renormalize at two loops the axial current and $F \tilde{F}$ in massless QED, using the recently proposed semi-naive dimensional renormalization scheme. We show that the results are in agreement with those in the Breitenlohner-Maison-'t Hooft-Veltman scheme, previously obtained indirectly by making a three-loop computation.
We outline how QED with spinor matter can be described by the tensionless limit of spinning strings with contact interactions. The strings represent electric lines of force with charges at their ends. The contact interaction is constructed from a delta-function on the world-sheet which, although off-shell, decouples from the world-sheet metric. Integrating out the string degrees of freedom with fixed boundary generates the super-Wilson loop that couples spinor matter to electromagnetism in the world-line formalism. World-sheet and world-line, but not spacetime, supersymmetry underpin the model…
The renormalized photon and electron propagators are expanded over planar binary trees. Explicit recurrence solutions are given for the terms of these expansions. In the case of massless Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), the relation between renormalized and bare expansions is given in terms of a Hopf algebra structure. For massive quenched QED, the relation between renormalized and bare expansions is given explicitly.
As a check of the first massive integrated vertex operator in the pure spinor formalism constructed in arXiv:1802.04486, we compute the one loop 2-point function of the stable non-BPS massive states in SO(32) heterotic string theory. This allows us to compute the one loop renormalized mass of these states using the pure spinor formalism. Our results are in agreement with the corresponding results obtained by Sen using the RNS formalism. This provides an instance of the equivalence between the RNS and the pure spinor formalism for the massive states at loop level.
We discuss the possibility to obtain, from a five-dimensional free spinor Lagrangian, the Quantum Electro-Dynamics (QED) coupling via a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the theory. This result is achieved taking a phase dependence of the spinor field on the extra-coordinate and modifying the corresponding connection. The five-dimensional spinor theory is covariant under the admissible coordinates transformations and its four-dimensional reduction provides the QED coupling term.
In this letter the algebraic renormalization method, which is independent of any kind of regularization scheme, is presented for the parity-preserving QED_3 coupled to scalar matter in the symmetric regime, where the scalar assumes vanishing vacuum expectation value, $<ϕ>=0$. The model shows to be stable under radiative corrections and anomaly free.
In this letter the algebraic renormalization method, which is independent of any kind of regularization scheme, is presented for the parity-preserving QED_3 coupled to scalar matter in the broken regime, where the scalar assumes a finite vacuum expectation value, $<\vf> = v$. The model shows to be stable under radiative corrections and anomaly free.

It is shown that the renormalization group (RG) equation in QED can only describe the finite size effects of the system. The RG equation is originated from the response of the renormalized coupling constant for the change of the system size $L$. The application of the RG equation to the continuum limit treatment of the lattice gauge theory, therefore, does not make sense, and the well-known unphysical result of the lattice gauge theory with Wilson's action cannot be remedied any more.
We examine the vacuum polarization contribution in the renormalization scheme of QED. Normally, the quadratic divergence term is discarded under the condition that the counter term of the Lagrangian density should be gauge invariant. Here, it is shown that the whole contribution of the photon self-energy should not be considered for the renormalization procedure. In fact, the finite contribution of the renormalization in the vacuum polarization is shown to give rise to the hyperfine splitting energy which disagrees with the experimental observation in hydrogen atom. For the treatment of the va…
This paper presents divergent contributions of the radiative corrections for a Lorentz-violating extension of the scalar electrodynamics. We initially discuss some features of the model and extract the Feynman rules. Then we compute the one-loop radiative corrections using Feynman parametrization and dimensional regularization in order to evaluate the integrals. We also discuss Furry's theorem validity and renormalization in the present context.
Using the exact renormalization group (ERG) formalism, we study the gauge invariant composite operators in QED. Gauge invariant composite operators are introduced as infinitesimal changes of the gauge invariant Wilson action. We examine the dependence on the gauge fixing parameter of both the Wilson action and gauge invariant composite operators. After defining ``gauge fixing parameter independence,'' we show that any gauge independent composite operators can be made ``gauge fixing parameter independent'' by appropriate normalization. As an application, we give a concise but careful proof of t…
Exact analytical solutions are presented for the time evolution of the density of pairs produced in the QED vacuum by a time-independent, uniform electric field. The mathematical tool used here to describe the pair production is the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner function introduced before [Phys. Rev. D 44, 1825 (1991)]. The initial value problem for this function is solved by decomposing the solution into a product of spinors. The equations for spinors are much simpler and are solved analytically. These calculations are nonperturbative since pair production is due to quantum-mechanical tunneling and…
Modified similarity renormalization of Hamiltonians is proposed, that performes by means of flow equations the similarity transformation of Hamiltonian in the particle number space. This enables to renormalize in the energy space the field theoretical Hamiltonian and makes possible to work in a severe trancated Fock space for the renormalized Hamiltonian.
We calculate one-loop contributions to the two and three point spinor-vector functions in z=2 Horava-Lifshitz QED. This allows us to obtain the anomalous magnetic moment.
The QED renormalization is restudied by using a mass-dependent subtraction which is performed at a time-like renormalization point. The subtraction exactly respects necessary physical and mathematical requirements such as the gauge symmetry, the Lorentz- invariance and the mathematical convergence. Therefore, the renormalized results derived in the subtraction scheme are faithful and have no ambiguity. Especially, it is proved that the solution of the renormalization group equation satisfied by a renormalized wave function, propagator or vertex can be fixed by applying the renormalization boun…
Haisch and Rueda have recently proposed a model in which the inertia of charged particles is a consequence of their interaction with the electromagnetic zero-point field. This model is based on the observation that in an accelerated frame the momentum distribution of vacuum fluctuations is not isotropic. We analyze this issue through standard techniques of relativistic field theory, first by regarding the field A_mu as a classical random field, and then by making reference to the mass renormalization procedure in Quantum Electrodynamics and scalar-QED.
We construct and study singular functions in strong-field $QED$ with two external electromagnetic fields that represent principally different types of external backgrounds, the first one belongs to the class of so-called $t$-potential electric steps (electric-like fields that are switched on and off at initial and final time instants), and the second one belongs to the class of so-called $x$-potential electric steps (time-independent electric-like fields of constant direction that are concentrated in a restricted spatial area). As the first background ($T$-constant electric field) is chosen an…
We consider the one-loop renormalization of QED in curved space-time with additional Lorentz and/or CPT breaking terms. The renormalization group equations in the vacuum sector are derived. In the special case of Minkowski metric and with constant Lorentz and CPT breaking terms these equations reduce to the ones obtained earlier by other authors. The necessary form of the vacuum counterterms indicate possible violations of the space or time homogeneity or space isotropy in the gravitational phenomena. However, the necessity of the phenomenologically most interesting terms such as linear in the…

We study the small mass limit of the one-loop spinor effective action, comparing the derivative expansion approximation with exact numerical results that are obtained from an extension to spinor theories of the partial-wave-cutoff method. In this approach one can compute numerically the renormalized one-loop effective action, for radially separable gauge field background fields in spinor QED. We highlight an important difference between the small mass limit of the derivative expansion approximation for spinor and scalar theories.
Recently, one of us (H.S.) gave an explicit form of the Ward-Takahashi identity for the Wilson action of QED. We first rederive the identity using a functional method. The identity makes it possible to realize the gauge symmetry even in the presence of a momentum cutoff. In the cutoff dependent realization, the abelian nature of the gauge symmetry is lost, breaking the nilpotency of the BRS transformation. Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, we extend the Wilson action by including the antifield contributions. Then, the Ward-Takahashi identity for the Wilson action is lifted to a quantum m…
At zero temperature, the Lorentz invariance is strictly preserved in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. This property ensures that the velocity of massless fermions is not renormalized by the gauge interaction. At finite temperature, however, the Lorentz invariance is explicitly broken by the thermal fluctuation. The longitudinal component of gauge interaction becomes short-ranged due to thermal screening, whereas the transverse component remains long-ranged because of local gauge invariance. The transverse gauge interaction leads to singular corrections to the fermion self-energy and …
The functional flow equation and the Quantum Master equation are consistently solved in perturbation for the chiral symmetric QED with and without four-fermi interactions. Due to the presence of momentum cutoff, unconventional features related to gauge symmetry are observed even in our perturbative results. In the absence of the four-fermi couplings, one-loop calculation gives us the Ward identity, $Z_{1}=Z_{2}$, and the standard results of anomalous dimensions and the beta function for the gauge coupling. It is a consequence of regularization scheme independence in one-loop computation. We al…
In this work we study the issue of gauge anomalies in Lorentz-violating QED. To do so, we opt to use the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin formalism within the algebraic renormalization approach, reducing our study to a cohomology problem. Since this approach is independent of the renormalization scheme, the results obtained here are expected to be general. We find that the Lorentz-violating QED is free of gauge anomalies to all orders in perturbation theory.
Known results on two-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED_2) have been used to study the dependence of functional renormalization group equations on renormalization schemes and approximations applied for its bosonized version. It is demonstrated that the singularity of flow equations can be avoided in the optimized and power-law schemes for the bosonized model and the drawback of renormalization on bosonization is shown: it is indicated that renormalization of QED_2 possibly requires interaction terms corresponding to higher frequency modes of its bosonized version.
In this paper, we consider the $β$ function at one-loop approximation for noncommutative scalar QED. The renormalization of the full theory, including the basic vertices, and the renormalization group equation are fully established. Next, the complete set of the one-loop diagrams corresponding to the first-order radiative corrections to the basic functions is considered: gauge, charged scalar and ghost fields self-energies, and three- and four-point vertex functions $\left<ϕ^†ϕA\right>$ and $\left<ϕ^†ϕA A\right>$, respectively. We pay special attention to the noncommutative contributions to th…
We study the renormalization of massless QED from the point of view of the Hopf algebra discovered by D. Kreimer. For QED, we describe a Hopf algebra of renormalization which is neither commutative nor cocommutative. We obtain explicit renormalization formulas for the electron and photon propagators, for the vacuum polarization and the electron self-energy, which are equivalent to Zimmermann's forest formula for the sum of all Feynman diagrams at a given order of interaction. Then we extend to QED the Connes-Kreimer map defined by the coupling constant of the theory (i.e. the homomorphism betw…
In the framework of strong-field QED with $x$-steps, we study vacuum mean values of the current density and energy--momentum tensor of the quantized spinor field placed in the so-called $L$-constant electric background. The latter background can be, for example, understood as the electric field confined between capacitor plates, which are separated by a sufficiently large distance $L$. First, we reveal peculiarities of nonperturbative calculating of mean values in strong-field QED with $x$-steps in general and, in the $L$-constant electric field, in particular. We propose a new renormalization…
The present article is an important addition to the nonperturbative formulation of QED with x-steps presented by Gavrilov and Gitman in Phys. Rev. D. 93, 045002 (2016). Here we propose a new renormalization and volume regularization procedures which allow one to calculate and distinguish physical parts of different matrix elements of operators of the current and of the energy-momentum tensor, at the same time relating the latter quantities with characteristics of the vacuum instability. For this purpose, a modified inner product and a parameter τ of the regularization are introduced. The latte…

We study the theory of noncommutative U(N) Yang-Mills field interacting with scalar and spinor fields in the fundamental and the adjoint representations. We include in the action both the terms describing interaction between the gauge and the matter fields and the terms which describe interaction among the matter fields only. Some of these interaction terms have not been considered previously in the context of noncommutative field theory. We find all counterterms for the theory to be finite in the one-loop approximation. It is shown that these counterterms allow to absorb all the divergencies …
Quantum electrodynamics (QED) with self-conjugated equations with spinor wave functions for fermion fields is considered. In the low order of the perturbation theory, matrix elements of some of QED physical processes are calculated. The final results coincide with cross-sections calculated in the standard QED. The self-energy of an electron and amplitudes of processes associated with determination of the anomalous magnetic moment of an electron and Lamb shift are calculated. These results agree with the results in the standard QED.Distinctive feature of the developed theory is the fact that on…
We obtain analytical five-loop results for the renormalization group $β$-function of Quantum Electrodynamics with the single lepton in different renormalization schemes. The theoretical consequences of the results obtained are discussed.
In this talk, I will summarize the present state of a long-term effort to obtain information on the high-order asymptotic behaviour of the QED perturbation series through the effective action. Starting with the constant-field case, I will discuss the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian in various dimensions, and up to the three-loop level. This Lagrangian holds the information on the N-photon amplitudes in the low-energy limit, and combining it with spinor helicity methods explicit all-N results can be obtained at the one-loop and, for the "all + " amplitudes, also at the two-loop level. For the imagi…
Two dimensional dilaton gravity interacting with a four-fermion model and scalars is investigated, all the coefficients of the Lagrangian being arbitrary functions of the dilaton field. The one-loop covariant effective action for 2D dilaton gravity with Majorana spinors (including the four-fermion interaction) is obtained, and the technical problems which appear in an attempt at generalizing such calculations to the case of the most general four-fermion model described by Dirac fermions are discussed. A solution to these problems is found, based on its reduction to the Majorana spinor case. Th…
The infinitesimal unitary transformation, introduced recently by F.Wegner, to bring the Hamiltonian to diagonal (or band diagonal) form, is applied to the Hamiltonian theory as an exact renormalization scheme. We consider QED on the light front to illustrate the method. The low-energy generated interaction, induced in the renormalized Hamiltonian to the order α, is shown to be negative to insure together with instantaneous term and perturbative photon exchange the bound states for positronium. It is possible to perform the complete complete elimination of the eeγ-vertex in the instant form fra…
Differential regularization is used to investigate the one-loop quantum corrections to Chern-Simons-Maxwell spinor and scalar electrodynamics. We illustrate the techniques to write the loop amplitudes in coordinate space. The short-distance expansion method is developed to perform the Fourier transformation of the amplitudes into momentum space and the possible renormalization ambiguity in Chern-Simons type gauge theories in terms of differential regularization is discussed. We also stress that the surface terms appearing in the differential regularization should be kept along for finite theor…
We study the chiral critical behaviors of QED by using Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group (NPRG). Taking account of the non-ladder contributions, our flow equations are free from the gauge parameter ($α$) dependence. We clarify the chiral phase structure, and calculate the anomalous dimension of $\barψψ$, which is enhanced compared to the ladder approximation. We find that the cutoff scheme dependence of the physical results is very small.
We analyze a formulation of QED based on the Wilson renormalization group. Although the ``effective Lagrangian'' used at any given scale does not have simple gauge symmetry, we show that the resulting renormalized Green's functions correctly satisfies Ward identities to all orders in perturbation theory. The loop expansion is obtained by solving iteratively the Polchinski's renormalization group equation. We also give a new simple proof of perturbative renormalizability. The subtractions in the Feynman graphs and the corresponding counterterms are generated in the process of fixing the physica…
In the context of massless quantum electrodynamics (QED) with a linear covariant gauge fixing, the connection between the counterterm and the Hopf-algebraic approach to renormalization is examined. The coproduct formula of Green's functions contains two invariant charges, which give rise to different renormalization group functions. All formulas are tested by explicit computations to third loop order. The possibility of a finite electron self-energy by fixing a generalized linear covariant gauge is discussed. An analysis of subdivergences leads to the conclusion that such a gauge only exists i…
The one-loop effective action in QED at zero and finite temperature is obtained by using the worldline approach. The Feynman rules for the perturbative expansion of the action in the number of derivatives are derived. The general structure of the temperature dependent part of the effective action in an arbitrary external inhomogeneous magnetic field is established. The two-derivative term in the effective action for spinor and scalar QED in a static magnetic background at $T\neq 0$ is calculated.
We study a QED extension that is unitary, CPT invariant and super-renormalizable, but violates Lorentz symmetry at high energies, and contains higher-dimension operators (LVQED). Divergent diagrams are only one- and two-loop. We compute the one-loop renormalizations at high and low energies and analyse the relation between them. It emerges that the power-like divergences of the low-energy theory are multiplied by arbitrary constants, inherited by the high-energy theory, and therefore can be set to zero at no cost, bypassing the hierarchy problem.
In this paper, we describe the generation of the CPT-even, aether-like terms via the new CPT-even magnetic-like coupling. We carry out a study the loop corrections generated by this coupling. Previous investigations has been initiated on this issue and we have extended them to studying of higher-point functions, of quantum corrections to vertices of the interaction and to two-point function of the spinor field.
We study a five dimensional Horava-Lifshitz like scalar QED with dynamical exponent z=2. Consistency of the renormalization procedure requires the presence of four quartic and one six-fold scalar couplings besides the terms bilinear in the scalar fields. We compute one-loop radiative corrections to the parameters in the original Lagrangian employing dimensional regularization in the spacial part of the Feynman integrals and prove the relevant Ward identities. By using renormalization group methods, we determine the behavior of the coupling constants with changes in the energy and discuss the e…
In this letter we call into question the perturbatively parity breakdown at 1-loop for the massless QED_3 frequently claimed in the literature. As long as perturbative quantum field theory is concerned, whether a parity anomaly owing to radiative corrections exists or not will be definitely proved by using a renormalization method independent of any regularization scheme. Such a problem has been investigated in the framework of BPHZL renormalization method, by adopting the Lowenstein-Zimmermann subtraction scheme. The 1-loop parity-odd contribution to the vacuum-polarization tensor is explicit…
We extend a constrained version of Implicit Regularization (CIR) beyond one loop order for gauge field theories. In this framework, the ultraviolet content of the model is displayed in terms of momentum loop integrals order by order in perturbation theory for any Feynman diagram, while the Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identities are controlled by finite surface terms. To illustrate, we apply CIR to massless abelian Gauge Field Theories (scalar and spinorial QED) to two loop order and calculate the two-loop beta-function of the spinorial QED.
We compute the $β$-function of a YM theory, broken to $U(1)$, by evaluating the coupling constant renormalization in the broken phase. We perform the calculation in the unitary gauge where only physical particles appear and the theory looks like a version of QED containing massive charged spin 1 particles. We consider an on-shell scattering process and after verifying that the non-renormalizable divergences which appear in the Green's functions cancel in the expression of the amplitude, we show that the coupling constant renormalization is entirely due to the photon self-energy as in QED. Howe…
We investigate textbook QED in the framework of the exact renormalization group. In the strong-coupling region, we study the influence of fluctuation-induced photonic and fermionic self-interactions on the nonperturbative running of the gauge coupling. Our findings confirm the triviality hypothesis of complete charge screening if the ultraviolet cutoff is sent to infinity. Though the Landau pole does not belong to the physical coupling domain owing to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (chiSB), the theory predicts a scale of maximal UV extension of the same order as the Landau pole scale. In…
We considered a new renormalization condition for the vacuum expectation values of the scalar and spinor currents induced by a homogeneous and constant electric field background in de Sitter spacetime. Following a semiclassical argument, the condition named maximal subtraction imposes the exponential suppression on the massive charged particle limit of the renormalized currents. The maximal subtraction changes the behaviors of the induced currents previously obtained by the conventional minimal subtraction scheme. The maximal subtraction is favored for a couple of physically decent predictions…
We extend a previous Landau-gauge study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in strong-coupling, quenched QED_4 to arbitrary covariant gauges. We use the fermion-photon proper vertex proposed by Curtis and Pennington with an additional correction term included to compensate for the small gauge-dependence induced by the ultraviolet regulator. We discuss the chiral limit and the onset of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the presence of nonperturbative renormalization. We extract the critical coupling in several different gauges and find evi…
