All one-loop renormalization constants for Non-Abelian gauge theory are computed in details by using the symmetry-preserving Loop Regularization method proposed in\cite{LR1,LR2}. The resulting renormalization constants are manifestly shown to satisfy Ward-Takahaski-Slavnov-Taylor identities, and lead to the well-known one loop $β$ function for Non-Abelian gauge theory of QCD\cite{GWP}. The loop regularization method is realized in the dimension of original field theories, it maintains not only symmetries but also divergent behaviors of original field theories with the introduction of two energy scales. Such two scales play the roles of characterizing and sliding energy scales as well as ultraviolet and infrared cutoff energy scales. An explicit Check of those identities provides a clear demonstration how the symmetry-preserving Loop Regularization method can consistently be applied to non-Abelian gauge theories.
We provide the renormalization constants of the axial current operators, both singlet and non-singlet, in dimensional regularization up to four-loop order in QCD, determined using the off-shell Ward-Takahashi identity for an axial current with a non-anticommuting $γ_5$. A possible application of the result for the singlet axial current operator is the extraction of the non-decoupling mass logarithms in the axial quark form factors.
Action principles, restoration of BRS symmetry and the renormalization group equation for chiral non-Abelian gauge theories in dimensional renormalization with a non-anticommuting $γ_5$
This review provides a detailed introduction to chiral gauge theories, renormalization theory, and the application of dimensional regularization with the non-anticommuting BMHV scheme for $γ_5$. One goal is to show how chiral gauge theories can be renormalized despite the spurious breaking of gauge invariance and how to obtain the required symmetry-restoring counterterms. A second goal is to familiarize the reader with the theoretical basis of the renormalization of chiral gauge theories, the theorems that guarantee the existence of renormalized chiral gauge theories at all orders as consisten…
We briefly review the calculations of quantum corrections related with the exact NSVZ $β$-function in ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theories, paying especial attention to the scheme dependence of the results. It is explained, how the NSVZ relation is obtained for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare coupling constant if a theory is regularized by higher derivatives. Also we describe, how to construct a special renormalization prescription which gives the NSVZ relation for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant exactl…
For $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without matter it is demonstrated that there is a class of renormalization schemes, in which the exact Novikov, Shifman, Vainshtein, and Zakharov (NSVZ) formula for the renormalization group $β$-function, defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant, is valid. These schemes are related with each other by finite renormalizations forming a one-parameter commutative subgroup of general renormalization group transformations. The analogy between the exact $β$-function in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without matter an…
By applying the recently developed Loop Regularization(LR) with string-mode regulators to supersymmetric field theories, we explicitly verify the supersymmetric Ward identities in several supersymmetric models at one-loop level. It is interesting to observe that supersymmetry is a so remarkable symmetry that the supersymmetric Ward identities hold as long as a regularization scheme is realized in the exact four dimensional space-time with translational invariance for the momentum integration, and the gauge symmetry can be maintained once the regularization scheme preserves supersymmetry and sa…
Starting from a well defined local Lagrangian, we analyze the renormalization group equations in terms of the two different arbitrary scales associated with the regularization procedure and with the physical renormalization of the bare parameters, respectively. We apply our formalism to the minimal subtraction scheme using dimensional regularization. We first argue that the relevant regularization scale in this case should be dimensionless. By relating bare and renormalized parameters to physical observables, we calculate the coefficients of the renormalization group equation up to two loop or…
The exact NSVZ relation between a $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED and an anomalous dimension of the matter superfields is studied within the Slavnov higher derivative regularization approach. It is shown that if the renormalization group functions are defined in terms of the bare coupling constant, this relation is always valid. In the renormalized theory the NSVZ relation is obtained in the momentum subtraction scheme supplemented by a special finite renormalization. Unlike the dimensional reduction, the higher derivative regularization allows to fix this finite renormalization. This is mad…
We study the regularization dependence on the quenched Schwinger-Dyson equations in general gauge by applying the two types of regularizations, the four and three dimensional momentum cutoffs. The obtained results indicate that the solutions are not drastically affected by the choice of two different cutoff prescriptions. We then think that both the regularizations can nicely be adopted in the analyses for the Schwinger-Dyson equations.
We study the Lorentz and Dirac algebra, including antisymmetric $ε$ tensors and the $γ_5$ matrix, in implicit gauge-invariant regularization/renormalization methods defined in fixed integer dimensions. They include constrained differential, implicit and four-dimensional renormalization. We find that these fixed-dimension methods face the same difficulties as the different versions of dimensional regularization. We propose a consistent procedure in these methods, similar to the consistent version of regularization by dimensional reduction.
The vertex structure of QCD fixed in the maximal abelian gauge (MAG) and Curci-Ferrari gauge is analysed at two loops at the fully symmetric point for the 3-point functions corresponding to the three momentum subtraction (MOM) renormalization schemes. Consequently the three loop renormalization group functions are determined for each of these three schemes in each gauge using properties of the renormalization group equation.
We illustrate the dimensional regularization technique using a simple problem from elementary electrostatics. We contrast this approach with the cutoff regularization approach, and demonstrate that dimensional regularization preserves the translational symmetry. We then introduce a Minimal Subtraction (MS) and a Modified Minimal Subtraction (MS-Bar) scheme to renormalize the result. Finally, we consider dimensional transmutation as encountered in the case of compact extra-dimensions.
We apply the BMHV scheme for non-anticommuting $γ_5$ to an abelian chiral gauge theory at the two-loop level. As our main result, we determine the full structure of symmetry-restoring counterterms up to the two-loop level. These counterterms turn out to have the same structure as at the one-loop level and a simple interpretation in terms of restoration of well-known Ward identities. In addition, we show that the ultraviolet divergences cannot be canceled completely by counterterms generated by field and parameter renormalization, and we determine needed UV divergent evanescent counterterms. Th…
The renormalization constant $Z_J$ of the flavor-singlet axial-vector current with a non-anticommuting $γ_5$ in dimensional regularization is determined to order $α_s^3$ in QCD with massless quarks. The result is obtained by computing the matrix elements of the operators appearing in the axial-anomaly equation $\big[\partial_μ J^μ_{5} \big]_{R} = \frac{α_s}{4 π}\, n_f\, {\displaystyle \mathrm{T}_{F}} \, \big[F \tilde{F} \big]_{R}$ between the vacuum and a state of two (off-shell) gluons to 4-loop order. Furthermore, through this computation, the conjectured equality between the $\overline{\mat…
To understand better the quantum structure of field theory and standard model in particle physics, it is necessary to investigate carefully the divergence structure in quantum field theories (QFTs) and work out a consistent framework to avoid infinities. The divergence has got us into trouble since developing quantum electrodynamics in 1930s, its treatment via the renormalization scheme is satisfied not by all physicists, like Dirac and Feynman who have made serious criticisms. The renormalization group analysis reveals that QFTs can in general be defined fundamentally with the meaningful ener…
A detailed description of the method for analytical evaluation of the three-loop contributions to renormalization group functions is presented. This method is employed to calculate the charge renormalization function and anomalous dimensions for non-Abelian gauge theories with fermions in the three-loop approximation. A three-loop expression for the effective charge of QCD is given. Charge renormalization effects in the SU(4)-supersymmetric gauge model is shown to vanish at this level. A complete list of required formulas is given in Appendix. The above-mentioned results of three-loop calculat…
To all orders of perturbation theory, the renormalization of the topological charge density in dimensionally regularized QCD is shown to require no more than an additive renormalization proportional to the divergence of the flavour-singlet axial current. The proof is based on the standard BRS analysis of the QCD vertex functional in the background gauge and exploits the special algebraic properties of the charge density through the Stora--Zumino chain of descent equations.
Flows of the couplings of a theory of an N-component (complex) scalar field coupled to electrodynamics is investigated using the functional renormalization group formalism in d dimensions in covariant gauges. We find charged fixed points for any number of components in d=3, in accordance with the findings of [G. Fejos and T. Hatsuda, Phys. Rev. D 93, 121701 (2016)] for N=1. It is argued that the appropriate choice of the regulator matrix is indispensible to obtain such a result. Ward-Takahashi identites are analyzed in the presence of the regulator, and their compatibility with the flow equati…
In many models in condensed matter physics and high-energy physics, one finds inhomogeneous phases at high density and low temperature. These phases are characterized by a spatially dependent condensate or order parameter. A proper calculation requires that one takes the vacuum fluctuations of the model into account. These fluctuations are ultraviolet divergent and must be regularized. We discuss different consistent ways of regularizing and renormalizing quantum fluctuations, focusing on a symmetric energy cutoff scheme and dimensional regularization. We apply these techniques calculating the…
We study the application of the Breitenlohner-Maison-'t Hooft-Veltman (BMHV) scheme of Dimensional Regularization to the renormalization of chiral gauge theories, focusing on the specific counterterm structure required by the non-anticommuting Dirac $γ_5$ matrix and the breaking of the BRST invariance. Calculations are performed at the one-loop level in a massless chiral Yang-Mills theory with chiral fermions and real scalar fields. We discuss the setup and properties of the regularized theory in detail. Our central results are the full counterterm structures needed for the correct renormaliza…
The one loop 3-point vertex functions of QCD in the maximal abelian gauge (MAG) are evaluated at the fully symmetric point at one loop. As a consequence the theory is renormalized in the various momentum (MOM) schemes which are defined by the trivalent vertices, as well as in the MSbar scheme. From these the two loop renormalization group functions in the MOM schemes are derived using the one loop conversion functions. In parallel we repeat the analysis for the Curci-Ferrari gauge which corresponds to the MAG in a specific limit. The relation between the Lambda parameters in different schemes …
As recently pointed out, regularization schemes defined in four-dimensions may also face inconsistencies in the presence of chiral fermions. In this work, we extend this analysis to two-loop order. Adopting the implicit regularization as working arena, we discuss in detail how a consistent version of the method can be envisaged, and present many of the subtleties that appear at two-loop order using an abelian chiral model as working example.
Evidence for the absence of regularization corrections to the partial-wave renormalization procedure in one-loop self energy calculations in external fields
We perform an old school, one-loop renormalization of the Abelian-Higgs model in the Unitary and $R_ξ$ gauges, focused on the scalar potential and the gauge boson mass. Our goal is to demonstrate in this simple context the validity of the Unitary gauge at the quantum level, which could open the way for an until now (mostly) avoided framework for loop computations. We indeed find that the Unitary gauge is consistent and equivalent to the $R_ξ$ gauge at the level of $β$-functions. Then we compare the renormalized, finite, one-loop Higgs potential in the two gauges and we again find equivalence. …
Many cosmological observables of interest derive from primordial vacuum fluctuations evolved to late times. These observables represent statistical draws from some underlying quantum or statistical field theoretic framework where infinities arise and require regularization. After subtracting divergences, renormalization conditions must be imposed by measurements or observations at some scale, mindful of scheme and background dependence. We review this process on backgrounds that transition from finite duration inflation to radiation domination, and show how in spite of the ubiquity of scaleles…
Recent progress in the understanding of vacuum expectation values and of infrared divergences in different regularization schemes is reviewed. Vacuum expectation values are gauge and renormalization-scheme dependent quantities. Using a method based on Slavnov-Taylor identities, the renormalization properties could be better understood. The practical outcome is the computation of the beta functions for vacuum expectation values in general gauge theories. The infrared structure of gauge theory amplitudes depends on the regularization scheme. The well-known prediction of the infrared structure in…
