We apply random matrix and free probability techniques to the study of linear maps of interest in quantum information theory. Random quantum channels have already been widely investigated with spectacular success. Here, we are interested in more general maps, asking only for $k$-positivity instead of the complete positivity required of quantum channels. Unlike the theory of completely positive maps, the theory of $k$-positive maps is far from being completely understood, and our techniques give many new parametrized families of such maps. We also establish a conceptual link with free probability theory, and show that our constructions can be obtained to some extent without random techniques in the setup of free products of von Neumann algebras. Finally, we study the properties of our examples and show that for some parameters, they are indecomposable. In particular, they can be used to detect the presence of entanglement missed by the partial transposition test, that is, PPT entanglement. As an application, we considerably refine our understanding of PPT states in the case where one of the spaces is large whereas the other one remains small.
We study positive maps of B(K) into B(H) for finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces K and H. Our main emphasis is on how Choi matrices and estimates of their norms with respect to mapping cones reflect various properties of the maps. Special attention will be given to entanglement properties and k-positive maps, in particular tensor products of 2-positive maps. The latter problem is directly related to the question of n-copy distillability of quantum states, for which we obtain a partial result.
We construct optimal PPTES witnesses to detect $3\otimes 3$ PPT entangled edge states of type $(6,8)$ constructed recently \cite{kye_osaka}. To do this, we consider positive linear maps which are variants of the Choi type map involving complex numbers, and examine several notions related to optimality for those entanglement witnesses. Through the discussion, we suggest a method to check the optimality of entanglement witnesses without the spanning property.
In \cite{CMW19}, the authors introduced $k$-entanglement breaking linear maps to understand the entanglement breaking property of completely positive maps on taking composition. In this article, we do a systematic study of $k$-entanglement breaking maps. We prove many equivalent conditions for a $k$-positive linear map to be $k$-entanglement breaking, thereby study the mapping cone structure of $k$-entanglement breaking maps. We discuss examples of $k$-entanglement breaking maps and some of their significance. As an application of our study, we characterize completely positive maps that reduce…
We consider bi-linear analogues of $s$-positivity for linear maps. The dual objects of these notions can be described in terms of Schimdt ranks for tri-tensor products and Schmidt numbers for tri-partite quantum states. These tri-partite versions of Schmidt numbers cover various kinds of bi-separability, and so we may interpret witnesses for those in terms of bi-linear maps. We give concrete examples of witnesses for various kinds of three qubit entanglement.
In this paper, we present a characterization of optimal entanglement witnesses in terms of positive maps and then provide a general method of checking optimality of entanglement witnesses. Applying it, we obtain new indecomposable optimal witnesses which have no spanning property. These also provide new examples which support a recent conjecture saying that the so-called structural physical approximations to optimal positive maps (optimal entanglement witnesses) give entanglement breaking maps (separable states).
We consider entanglement witnesses arising from positive linear maps which generate exposed extremal rays. We show that every entanglement can be detected by one of these witnesses, and this witness detects a unique set of entanglement among those. Therefore, they provide a minimal set of witnesses to detect all entanglement in a sense. Furthermore, if those maps are indecomposable then they detect large classes of entanglement with positive partial transposes which have nonempty relative interiors in the cone generated by all PPT states. We also provide a one parameter family of indecomposabl…
Structural approximations to positive, but not completely positive maps are approximate physical realizations of these non-physical maps. They find applications in the design of direct entanglement detection methods. We show that many of these approximations, in the relevant case of optimal positive maps, define an entanglement breaking channel and, consequently, can be implemented via a measurement and state-preparation protocol. We also show how our findings can be useful for the design of better and simpler direct entanglement detection methods.
We present the general scheme for construction of noiseless networks detecting entanglement with the help of linear, hermiticity-preserving maps. We show how to apply the method to detect entanglement of unknown state without its prior reconstruction. In particular, we prove there always exists noiseless network detecting entanglement with the help of positive, but not completely positive maps. Then the generalization of the method to the case of entanglement detection with arbitrary, not necessarily hermiticity-preserving, linear contractions on product states is presented.
In this paper we study the $C^*$-convex set of unital entanglement breaking (EB-)maps on matrix algebras. General properties and an abstract characterization of $C^*$-extreme points are discussed. By establishing a Radon-Nikodym type theorem for a class of EB-maps we give a complete description of the $C^*$-extreme points. It is shown that a unital EB-map $Φ:M_{d_1}\to M_{d_2}$ is $C^*$-extreme if and only if it has Choi-rank equal to $d_2$. Finally, as a direct consequence of the Holevo form of EB-maps, we derive a noncommutative analogue of the Krein-Milman theorem for $C^*$-convexity of the…
We analyze certain class of linear maps on matrix algebras that become entanglement breaking after composing a finite or infinite number of times with themselves. This means that the Choi matrix of the iterated linear map becomes separable in the tensor product space. If a linear map is entanglement breaking after finite iterations, we say the map has a finite index of separability. In particular we show that every unital PPT-channel becomes entanglement breaking after a finite number of iterations. It turns out that the class of unital channels that have finite index of separability is a dens…
We study equivariant linear maps between finite-dimensional matrix algebras, as introduced by Bhat. These maps satisfy an algebraic property which makes it easy to study their positivity or k-positivity. They are therefore particularly suitable for applications to entanglement detection in quantum information theory. We characterize their Choi matrices. In particular, we focus on a subfamily that we call (a, b)-unitarily equivariant. They can be seen as both a generalization of maps invariant under unitary conjugation as studied by Bhat and as a generalization of the equivariant maps studied b…
We obtain expressions for the optimal rates of one- shot entanglement manipulation under operations which generate a negligible amount of entanglement. As the optimal rates for entanglement distillation and dilution in this paradigm, we obtain the max- and min-relative entropies of entanglement, the two logarithmic robustnesses of entanglement, and smoothed versions thereof. This gives a new operational meaning to these entanglement measures. Moreover, by considering the limit of many identical copies of the shared entangled state, we partially recover the recently found reversibility of entan…
In the recent paper [Chruściński and Wudarski, arXiv:1105.4821], it was conjectured that the entanglement witnesses arising from some generalized Choi maps are optimal. We show that this conjecture is true. Furthermore, we show that they provide a one parameter family of indecomposable optimal entanglement witnesses.
Positive maps applied to a subsystem of a bipartite quantum state constitute a central tool in characterising entanglement. In the multipartite case, however, the direct application of a positive but not completely positive map cannot distinguish if a state is genuinely multipartite entangled or just entangled across some bipartition. We thus generalise this bipartite concept to the multipartite setting by introducing non-positive maps that are positive on the subset of bi-separable states, but can map to a non-positive element if applied to a genuine multipartite entangled state. We explicitl…
We outline the scheme for quantization of classical Banach space results associated with some prototypes of dynamical maps and describe the quantization of correlations as well. A relation between these two areas is discussed.
We construct a new class of positive indecomposable maps in the algebra of 'd x d' complex matrices. Each map is uniquely characterized by a cyclic bistochastic matrix. This class generalizes a Choi map for d=3. It provides a new reach family of indecomposable entanglement witnesses which define important tool for investigating quantum entanglement.
We provide a generalization of the reduction and Robertson positive maps in matrix algebras. They give rise to a new class of optimal entanglement witnesses. Their structural physical approximation is analyzed. As a byproduct we provide a new examples of PPT (Positive Partial Transpose) entangled states.
Explicit expressions for the concurrence of all positive and trace-preserving ("stochastic") 1-qubit maps are presented. We construct the relevant convex roof patterns by a new method. We conclude that two component optimal decompositions always exist. Our results can be transferred to 2xN-quantumsystems providing the concurrence for all rank two density operators as well as lower and upper bounds for their entanglement of formation. We apply these results to a study of the entanglement entropy of 1-qubit stochastic maps which preserve axial symmetry. Using analytic and numeric results we anal…
Physical transformations are described by linear maps that are completely positive and trace preserving (CPTP). However, maps that are positive (P) but not completely positive (CP) are instrumental to derive separability/entanglement criteria. Moreover, the properties of such maps can be linked to entanglement properties of the states they detect. Here, we extend the results presented in [Phys. Rev A 93, 042335 (2016)], where sufficient separability criteria for bipartite systems were derived. In particular, we analyze the entanglement depth of an $N$-qubit system by proposing linear maps that…
In this paper we present a new method for entanglement witnesses construction. We show that to construct such an object we can deal with maps which are not positive on the whole domain, but only on a certain sub-domain. In our approach crucial role play such maps which are surjective between sets $\mathcal{P}_{k}^d$ of $k \leq d$ rank projectors and the set $\mathcal{P}_1^d$ of rank one projectors acting in the $d$ dimensional space. We argue that our method can be used to check whether a given observable is an entanglement witness. In the second part of this paper we show that inverse reducti…
We outline a new approach to the characterization as well as to the classification of positive maps. This approach is based on the facial structures of the set of states and of the cone of positive maps. In particular, the equivalence between Schroedinger's and Heisenberg's pictures is reviewed in this more general setting. Furthermore, we discuss in detail the structure of positive maps for two and three dimensional systems. In particular, the explicit form of decomposition of a positive map and the uniqueness of this decomposition for extremal positive maps for 2 dimensional case are describ…
We elaborate the concept of entanglement for multipartite system with bosonic and fermionic constituents and its generalization to systems with arbitrary parastatistics. The entanglement is characterized in terms of generalized Segre maps, supplementing thus an algebraic approach to the problem by a more geometric point of view.
A necessary and sufficient condition for 1-distillability is formulated in terms of decomposable positive maps. As an application we provide insight into why all states violating the reduction criterion map are distillable and demonstrate how to construct such maps in a systematic way. We establish a connection between a number of existing results, which leads to an elementary proof for the characterisation of distillability in terms of 2-positive maps.
We derive a general framework that connects every positive map with a corresponding witness for partial separability in multipartite quantum systems. We show that many previous approaches were intimately connected to the witnesses derived from partial transposition and that such criteria can easily be outperformed in higher dimensions by non-decomposable maps. As an exemplary case we present a witness that is capable of detecting genuine multipartite entanglement in bound entangled states.
We link the study of positive quantum maps, block positive operators, and entanglement witnesses with problems related to multivariate polynomials. For instance, we show how indecomposable block positive operators relate to biquadratic forms that are not sums of squares. Although the general problem of describing the set of positive maps remains open, in some particular cases we solve the corresponding polynomial inequalities and obtain explicit conditions for positivity.
Very recently a conjecture saying that the so-called structural physical approximations (SPAa) to optimal positive maps (optimal entanglement witnesses) give entanglement breaking (EB) maps (separable states) has been posed [J. K. Korbicz {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 78}, 062105 (2008)]. The main purpose of this contribution is to explore this subject. First, we extend the set of entanglement witnesses (EWs) supporting the conjecture. Then, we ask if SPAs constructed from other than the depolarizing channel maps also lead to EB maps and show that in general this is not the case. On the othe…
Motivated by the Peres-Horodecki criterion and the realignment criterion we develop a more powerful method to identify entangled states for any bipartite system through a universal construction of the witness operator. The method also gives a new family of positive but non-completely positive maps of arbitrary high dimensions which provide a much better test than the witness operators themselves. Moreover, we find there are two types of positive maps that can detect 2xN and 4xN bound entangled states. Since entanglement witnesses are physical observables and may be measured locally our constru…
This paper studies the class of stochastic maps, or channels, whose action (when tensored with the identity) on an entangled state always yields a separable state. Such maps have a canonical form introduced by Holevo. Such maps are called entanglement breaking, and can always be written in a canonical form introduced by Holevo. Some special classes of these maps are considered and several equivalent characterizations given. Since the set of entanglement-breaking trace-preserving maps is convex, it can be described by its extreme points. The only extreme points of the set of completely positive…
In this paper, a class of indecomposable positive finite rank elementary operators of order $(n,n)$ are constructed. This allows us to give a simple necessary and sufficient criterion for separability of pure states in bipartite systems of any dimension in terms of positive elementary operators of order $(2,2)$ and get some new mixed entangled states that can not be detected by the positive partial transpose (PPT) criterion and the realignment criterion.
We construct a new class of positive indecomposable maps in the algebra of `d x d' complex matrices. These maps are characterized by the `weakest' positivity property and for this reason they are called atomic. This class provides a new reach family of atomic entanglement witnesses which define important tool for investigating quantum entanglement. It turns out that they are able to detect states with the `weakest' quantum entanglement.
The problem of entanglement detection is a long standing problem in quantum information theory. One of the primary procedures of detecting entanglement is to find the suitable positive but non-completely positive maps. Here we try to give a generic prescription to construct a positive map that can be useful for such scenarios. We study a class of positive maps arising from Lindblad structures. We show that two famous positive maps viz. transposition and Choi map can be obtained as a special case of a class of positive maps having Lindblad structure. Generalizing the transposition map to a one …
Entanglement witnesses are observables which when measured, detect entanglement in a measured composed system. It is shown what kind of relations between eigenvectors of an observable should be fulfilled, to allow an observable to be an entanglement witness. Some restrictions on the signature of entaglement witnesses, based on an algebraic-geometrical theorem will be given. The set of entanglement witnesses is linearly isomorphic to the set of maps between matrix algebras which are positive, but not completely positive. A translation of the results to the language of positive maps is also give…
Let M and N be full matrix algebras. A unital completely positive (UCP) map ϕ:M\to N is said to preserve entanglement if its inflation ϕ\otimes \id_N : M\otimes N\to N\otimes N has the following property: for every maximally entangled pure state ρof N\otimes N, ρ\circ(ϕ\otimes \id_N) is an entangled state of M\otimes N. We show that there is a dichotomy in that every UCP map that is not entanglement breaking in the sense of Horodecki-Shor-Ruskai must preserve entanglement, and that entanglement preserving maps of every possible rank exist in abundance. We also show that with probability 1, {\e…
For many completely positive maps repeated compositions will eventually become entanglement breaking. To quantify this behaviour we develop a technique based on the Schmidt number: If a completely positive map breaks the entanglement with respect to any qubit ancilla, then applying it to part of a bipartite quantum state will result in a Schmidt number bounded away from the maximum possible value. Iterating this result puts a successively decreasing upper bound on the Schmidt number arising in this way from compositions of such a map. By applying this technique to completely positive maps in d…
We fully characterize bipartite entanglement-annihilating (EA) channels that destroy entanglement of any state shared by subsystems and, thus, should be avoided in any entanglement-enabled experiment. Our approach relies on extending the problem to EA positive maps, the cone of which remains invariant under concatenation with partially positive maps. Due to this invariancy, positive EA maps adopt a well characterization and their intersection with completely positive trace-preserving maps results in the set of EA channels. In addition to a general description, we also provide sufficient operat…

We identify a set of dynamical maps of open quantum system, and refer to them as "$ ε$-Markovian" maps. It is constituted of maps which, in a higher dimensional system-environment Hilbert space, possibly violate Born approximation but only a "little". We characterize the "$ε$-nonmarkovianity" of a general dynamical map by the minimum distance of that map from the set of $ε$-Markovian maps. We analytically derive an inequality which gives a bound on the $ ε$-nonmarkovianity of the dynamical map, in terms of an entanglement-like resource generated between the system and its "immediate" environme…
In this expository note, we explain facial structures for the convex cones consisting of positive linear maps, completely positive linear maps, decomposable positive linear maps between matrix algebras, respectively. These will be applied to study the notions of entangled edge states with positive partial transposes and optimality of entanglement witnesses.
Quantum entanglement can be studied through the theory of completely positive maps in a number of ways, including by making use of the Choi-Jamilkowski isomorphism, which identifies separable states with entanglement breaking quantum channels, and optimal ensemble length with entanglement breaking rank. The multiplicative domain is an important operator structure in the theory of completely positive maps. We introduce a new technique to determine if a channel is entanglement breaking and to evaluate entanglement breaking rank, based on an analysis of multiplicative domains determined by comple…
Stochastic and bistochastic matrices providing positive maps for spin states (for qudits) are shown to form semigroups with dense intersection with the Lie groups $IGL(n, \mathbb{R})$ and $GL(n, \mathbb{R})$ respectively. The density matrix of a qudit state is shown to be described by a spin tomogram determined by an orbit of the bistochastic semigroup acting on a simplex. A class of positive maps acting transitively on quantum states is introduced by relating stochastic and quantum stochastic maps in the tomographic setting. Finally, the entangled states of two qubits and Bell inequalities ar…
The problem of bound entanglement detection is a challenging aspect of quantum information theory for higher dimensional systems. Here, we propose an indecomposable positive map for two-qutrit systems, which is shown to generate a class of positive partial transposed (PPT) states. A corresponding witness operator is constructed and shown to be weakly optimal and locally implementable. Further, we perform a structural physical approximation of the indecomposable map to make it a completely positive one, and find a new PPT entangled state which is not detectable by certain other well-known entan…

Simple examples are constructed that show the entanglement of two qubits being both increased and decreased by interactions on just one of them. One of the two qubits interacts with a third qubit, a control, that is never entangled or correlated with either of the two entangled qubits and is never entangled, but becomes correlated, with the system of those two qubits. The two entangled qubits do not interact, but their state can change from maximally entangled to separable or from separable to maximally entangled. Similar changes for the two qubits are made with a swap operation between one of…
Detecting quantumness of correlations (especially entanglement) is a very hard task even in the simplest case i.e. two-partite quantum systems. Here we provide an analysis whether there exists a relation between two most popular types of entanglement identifiers: the first one based on positive maps and not directly applicable in laboratory and the second one --- geometric entanglement identifier which is based on specific Hermiticity-preserving maps. We show a profound relation between those two types of entanglement criteria. Hereunder we have proposed a general framework of nonlinear functi…
In this paper we describe a new connection between UPB (unextendable product bases) and P (positive) maps which are not CP (completely positive). We show that inner automorphisms of the set of P maps which are not CP, produce extremal extensions of these maps that help in entanglement detection. By constructing such an extension of the well-known Choi map, we strengthen its power to unearth PPT (positive under partial transpose) entangled states. We further show that the class of maps generated from the Choi map via an inner automorphism naturally detects the entanglement of states in the orth…
The set of Entanglement Saving (ES) quantum channels is introduced and characterized. These are completely positive, trace preserving transformations which when acting locally on a bipartite quantum system initially prepared into a maximally entangled configuration, preserve its entanglement even when applied an arbitrary number of times. In other words, a quantum channel $ψ$ is said to be ES if its powers $ψ^n$ are not entanglement-breaking for all integers $n$. We also characterize the properties of the Asymptotic Entanglement Saving (AES) maps. These form a proper subset of the ES channels …
We investigate entanglement production in a class of quantum baker's maps. The dynamics of these maps is constructed using strings of qubits, providing a natural tensor-product structure for application of various entanglement measures. We find that, in general, the quantum baker's maps are good at generating entanglement, producing multipartite entanglement amongst the qubits close to that expected in random states. We investigate the evolution of several entanglement measures: the subsystem linear entropy, the concurrence to characterize entanglement between pairs of qubits, and two proposal…
We introduce the notions of positive and copositive types for entanglement witnesses, depending on the distance to the positive part and copositive part. An entanglement witness $W$ is of positive type if and only if its partial transpose $W^Γ$ is of copositive type. We show that if the structural physical approximation of $W$ is separable then $W$ should be of copositive type, and the SPA of $W^Γ$ is never separable unless $W$ is of both positive and copositive type. This shows that the SPA conjecture is meaningful only for those of copositive type. We provide examples to show that the SPA co…
For two positive maps $ϕ_i:B(\mathcal{K}_i)\to B(\mathcal{H}_i)$, $i=1,2$, we construct a new linear map $ϕ:B(\mathcal{H})\to B(\mathcal{K})$, where $\mathcal{K}=\mathcal{K}_1\oplus\mathcal{K}_2\oplus\mathbb{C}$, $\mathcal{H}=\mathcal{H}_1\oplus\mathcal{H}_2\oplus\mathbb{C}$, by means of some additional ingredients such as operators and functionals. We call it a merging of maps $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$. We discuss properties of this construction. In particular, we provide conditions for positivity of $ϕ$, as well as for $2$-positivity, complete positivity and nondecomposability. In particular, we show …
