We analyze the forcing notion $\mathcal P$ of finite matrices whose rows consists of isomorphic countable elementary submodels of a given structure of the form $H_θ$. We show that forcing with this poset adds a Kurepa tree $T$. Moreover, if $\mathcal P_c$ is a suborder of $\mathcal P$ containing only continuous matrices, then the Kurepa tree $T$ is almost Souslin, i.e. the level set of any antichain in $T$ is not stationary in $ω_1$.
This is an expository paper about several sophisticated forcing techniques closely related to standard finite support iterations of ccc partial orders. We focus on the four topics of ultrapowers of forcing notions, iterations along templates, Boolean ultrapowers of forcing notions, and restrictions of forcing notions to elementary submodels.
The main theorem of this article is that every countable model of set theory M, including every well-founded model, is isomorphic to a submodel of its own constructible universe. In other words, there is an embedding $j:M\to L^M$ that is elementary for quantifier-free assertions. The proof uses universal digraph combinatorics, including an acyclic version of the countable random digraph, which I call the countable random Q-graded digraph, and higher analogues arising as uncountable Fraisse limits, leading to the hypnagogic digraph, a set-homogeneous, class-universal, surreal-numbers-graded acy…
Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.
We show that many countable support iterations of proper forcings preserve Souslin trees. We establish sufficient conditions in terms of games and we draw connections to other preservation properties. We present a proof of preservation properties in countable support interations in the so-called Case A that does not need a division into forcings that add reals and those who do not.
The preservation theorems for semi-properness, hemi-properness, and pseudo-completeness hold for countable support iterations as well as revised countable support iterations, notwithstanding the fact that the "factor lemma" fails for the countable support versions. Example: The countable support iteration of Namba forcing over a ground model of CH does not add reals. Example: A countable support iteration built from Namba forcing and Cohen forcing, over a ground model of CH, does not collapse omega_1
We make use of a finite support product of the Jensen minimal $\varPi^1_2$ singleton forcing to define a model in which $\varPi^1_2$ Uniformization fails for a set with countable cross-sections. We also define appropriate submodels of the same model in which Separation fails for $\varPi^1_3$.
We show that all finite powers of a Hausdorff space X do not contain uncountable weakly separated subspaces iff there is a c.c.c poset P such that 1_P forces that ``X is a countable union of 0-dimensional subspaces of countable weight.'' We also show that this theorem is sharp in two different senses: (i) we can't get rid of using generic extensions, (ii) we have to consider all finite powers of $X$.
Let αbe a countable ordinal and ¶(α) the collection of its subsets isomorphic to α. We show that the separative quotient of the set ¶(α) ordered by the inclusion is isomorphic to a forcing product of iterated reduced products of Boolean algebras of the form P(ω^γ)/I(ω^γ), where γis a limit ordinal or 1 and I(ω^γ) the corresponding ordinal ideal. Moreover, the poset ¶(α) is forcing equivalent to a two-step iteration P(ω)/Fin * π, where πis an ω_1-closed separative pre-order in each extension by P(ω)/Fin and, if the distributivity number is equal toω_1, to P(ω)/Fin. Also we analyze the quotients…
Suppose that $P$ is a forcing notion, $L$ is a language (in $V$), $\dotτ$ a $P$-name such that $P\Vdash$ "$\dotτ$ is a countable $L$-structure". In the product $P\times P$, there are names $\dot{τ_{1}},\dot{τ_{2}}$ such that for any generic filter $G=G_{1}\times G_{2}$ over $P\times P$, $\dotτ_{1}[G]=\dotτ[G_{1}]$ and $\dotτ_{2}[G]=\dotτ[G_{2}]$. Zapletal asked whether or not $P \times P \Vdash \dotτ_{1}\cong\dotτ_{2}$ implies that there is some $M\in V$ such that $P \Vdash \dotτ\cong\check{M}$. We answer this negatively and discuss related issues.
Assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, there is a compact first countable connected space of weight aleph_1 with no totally disconnected perfect subsets. Each such space, however, may be destroyed by some proper forcing order which does not add reals.
We prove a number of results about countable Borel equivalence relations with forcing constructions and arguments. These results reveal hidden regularity properties of Borel complete sections on certain orbits. As consequences they imply the nonexistence of Borel complete sections with certain features.
We present a general framework for forcing on $ω_2$ with finite conditions using countable models as side conditions. This framework is based on a method of comparing countable models as being membership related up to a large initial segment. We give several examples of this type of forcing, including adding a function on $ω_2$, adding a nonreflecting stationary subset of $ω_2 \cap \textrm{cof}(ω)$, and adding an $ω_1$-Kurepa tree.
Whenever P is a proper definable forcing for adding a real, the countable support iteration of P has all the preservation properties it can possibly have, within a wide syntactically identified class of properties.
We present reasons for developing a theory of forcing notions which satisfy the properness demand for countable models which are not necessarily elementary submodels of some (H(chi), in). This leads to forcing notions which are ``reasonably'' definable. We present two specific properties materializing this intuition: nep (non-elementary properness) and snep (Souslin non-elementary properness). For this we consider candidates (countable models to which the definition applies), and the older Souslin proper. A major theme here is ``preservation by iteration'', but we also show a dichotomy: if suc…
In this paper, we investigate connections between structures present in every generic extension of the universe $V$ and computability theory. We introduce the notion of {\em generic Muchnik reducibility} that can be used to to compare the complexity of uncountable structures; we establish basic properties of this reducibility, and study it in the context of {\em generic presentability}, the existence of a copy of the structure in every extension by a given forcing. We show that every forcing notion making $ω_2$ countable generically presents some countable structure with no copy in the ground …
A forcing extension may create new isomorphisms between two models of a first order theory. Certain model theoretic constraints on the theory and other constraints on the forcing can prevent this pathology. A countable first order theory is classifiable if it is superstable and does not have either the dimensional order property or the omitting types order property. Shelah [Sh:c] showed that if a theory T is classifiable then each model of cardinality lambda is described by a sentence of L_{infty, lambda}. In fact this sentence can be chosen in the L^*_{lambda}. (L^*_{lambda} is the result of …

Countable tightness may be destroyed by countably closed forcing. We characterize the indestructibility of countable tightness under countably closed forcing by combinatorial statements similar to the ones Tall used to characterize indestructibility of the Lindelof property under countably closed forcing. We consider the behavior of countable tightness in generic extensions obtained by adding Cohen reals. We show that certain classes of well-studied topological spaces are indestructibly countably tight. Stronger versions of countable tightness, including selective versions of separability, are…
I prove several theorems concerning upward closure and amalgamation in the generic multiverse of a countable transitive model of set theory. Every such model $W$ has forcing extensions $W[c]$ and $W[d]$ by adding a Cohen real, which cannot be amalgamated in any further extension, but some nontrivial forcing notions have all their extensions amalgamable. An increasing chain $W[G_0]\subseteq W[G_1]\subseteq\cdots$ has an upper bound $W[H]$ if and only if the forcing had uniformly bounded essential size in $W$. Every chain $W\subseteq W[c_0]\subseteq W[c_1]\subseteq\cdots$ of extensions adding Co…

Chain conditions are one of the major tools used in the theory of forcing. We say that a partial order has the countable chain condition if every antichain (in the sense of forcing) is countable. Without the axiom of choice antichains tend to be of little use, for various reasons, and in this short note we study a number of conditions which in ZFC are equivalent to the countable chain condition.
We introduce a simplified framework for ord-transitive models and Shelah's non elementary proper (nep) theory. We also introduce a new construction for the countable support nep iteration.
In this work we study the uncountable Borel chromatic numbers, defined by Geschke (2011) as cardinal characteristics of the continuum, of low complexity graphs. We show that a strong form of locally countable graphs with compact totally disconnected set of vertices have Borel chromatic number bounded by the continuum of the ground model in the model obtained by adding $\aleph_2$ Laver reals. From this, we answer a question from Geschke and the second author (2022), and another question from Fisher, Friedman and Khomskii (2014) concerning regularity properties of subsets of the real line.
We deal with an iteration theorem of forcing notion with a kind of countable support of nice enough forcing notion which is proper aleph_2-c.c. forcing notions. We then look at some special cases (Q_D 's preceded by random forcing).
We introduce a class of notions of forcing which we call $Σ$-Prikry, and show that many of the known Prikry-type notions of forcing that centers around singular cardinals of countable cofinality are $Σ$-Prikry. We show that given a $Σ$-Prikry poset $\mathbb P$ and a name for a non-reflecting stationary set $T$, there exists a corresponding $Σ$-Prikry poset that projects to $\mathbb P$ and kills the stationarity of $T$. Then, in a sequel to this paper, we develop an iteration scheme for $Σ$-Prikry posets. Putting the two works together, we obtain a proof of the following. Theorem. If $κ$ is the…
In Part I of this series, we introduced a class of notions of forcing which we call Sigma-Prikry, and showed that many of the known Prikry-type notions of forcing that center around singular cardinals of countable cofinality are Sigma-Prikry. We showed that given a Sigma-Prikry poset P and a P-name for a non-reflecting stationary set T, there exists a corresponding Sigma-Prikry poset that projects to P and kills the stationarity of T. In this paper, we develop a general scheme for iterating Sigma-Prikry posets and, as an application, we blow up the power of a countable limit of Laver-indestruc…
We make use of a finite support product of Jensen forcing to define a model in which there is a countable non-empty lightface $Π^1_2$ set of reals containing no ordinal-definable real.
I prove preservation theorems for countable support iteration of proper forcing concerning certain classes of capacities and submeasures. New examples of forcing notions and connections with measure theory are included.
Given a Polish space X and a countable family of analytic hypergraphs on X, I consider the sigma-ideal generated by Borel sets which are anticliques in at least one hypergraph in the family. It turns out that many of the quotient posets are proper. I investigate the forcing properties of these posets, certain natural operations on them, and prove some related dichotomies. For this broad class of posets, most fusion arguments and iteration preservation arguments can be replaced with simple combinatorial considerations concerning the hypergraphs.
Simpson showed that every countable model $\mathcal{M} \models \mathsf{PA}$ has an expansion $(\mathcal{M}, X) \models \mathsf{PA}^*$ that is pointwise definable. A natural question is whether, in general, one can obtain expansions of a non-prime model in which the definable elements coincide with those of the underlying model. Enayat showed that this is impossible by proving that there is $\mathcal{M} \models \mathsf{PA}$ such that for each undefinable class $X$ of $\mathcal{M}$, the expansion $(\mathcal{M}, X)$ is pointwise definable. We call models with this property Enayat models. In this …
We consider strong combinatorial principles for sigma-directed families of countable sets in the ordering by inclusion modulo finite, e.g. P-ideals of countable sets. We try for principles as strong as possible while remaining compatible with CH, and we also consider principles compatible with the existence of nonspecial Aronszajn trees. The main thrust is towards abstract principles with game theoretic formulations. Some of these principles are purely combinatorial, while the ultimate principles are primarily combinatorial but also have aspects of forcing axioms.
We introduce the $Σ_1$-definable universal finite sequence and prove that it exhibits the universal extension property amongst the countable models of set theory under end-extension. That is, (i) the sequence is $Σ_1$-definable and provably finite; (ii) the sequence is empty in transitive models; and (iii) if $M$ is a countable model of set theory in which the sequence is $s$ and $t$ is any finite extension of $s$ in this model, then there is an end-extension of $M$ to a model in which the sequence is $t$. Our proof method grows out of a new infinitary-logic-free proof of the Barwise extension…
Dobrinen, Hathaway and Prikry studied a forcing $\mathbb{P}_κ$ consisting of perfect trees of height $λ$ and width $κ$ where $κ$ is a singular $ω$-strong limit of cofinality $λ$. They showed that if $κ$ is singular of countable cofinality, then $\mathbb{P}_κ$ is minimal for $ω$-sequences assuming that $κ$ is a supremum of a sequence of measurable cardinals. We obtain this result without the measurability assumption. Prikry proved that $\mathbb{P}_κ$ is $(ω,ν)$-distributive for all $ν<κ$ given a singular $ω$-strong limit cardinal $κ$ of countable cofinality, and Dobrinen et al$.$ asked whether …
Shelah shows that certain revised countable support (RCS) iterations do not add reals. His motivation is to establish the independence (relative to large cardinals) of Avraham's problem on the existence of uncountable non-constuctible sequences all of whose proper initial segments are constructible, Friedman's problem on whether every 2-coloring of $S^2_0=\{α<ω_2\colon\cf(α)=ω\}$ has an uncountable sequentially closed homogeneous subset, and existence of a precipitous normal filter on $ω_2$ with $S^2_0\in{\cal F}$. The posets which Shelah uses in these constructions are Prikry forcing, Namba f…
We show that after forcing with a countable support iteration or a finite product of Sacks or splitting forcing over $L$, every analytic hypergraph on a Polish space admits a $\mathbfΔ^1_2$ maximal independent set. As a main application we get the consistency of $\mathfrak{r} = \mathfrak{u} = \mathfrak{i} = ω_2$ together with the existence of a $Δ^1_2$ ultrafilter, a $Π^1_1$ maximal independent family and a $Δ^1_2$ Hamel basis. This solves open problems of Brendle, Fischer and Khomskii and the author. We also show in ZFC that $\mathfrak{d} \leq \mathfrak{i}_{cl}$.
It is a well known open problem if, in ZFC, each compact space with a small diagonal is metrizable. We explore properties of compact spaces with a small diagonal using elementary chains of submodels. We prove that ccc subspaces of such spaces have countable π-weight. We generalize a result of Gruenhage about spaces which are metrizably fibered. Finally we discover that if there is a Luzin set of reals, then every compact space with a small diagonal will have many points of countable character.
Every mathematical structure has an elementary extension to a pseudo-countable structure, one that is seen as countable inside a suitable class model of set theory, even though it may actually be uncountable. This observation, proved easily with the Boolean ultrapower theorem, enables a sweeping generalization of results concerning countable models to a rich realm of uncountable models. The Barwise extension theorem, for example, holds amongst the pseudo-countable models -- every pseudo-countable model of ZF admits an end extension to a model of ZFC+V=L. Indeed, the class of pseudo-countable m…
We explore a general method based on trees of elementary submodels in order to present highly simplified proofs to numerous results in infinite combinatorics. While countable elementary submodels have been employed in such settings already, we significantly broaden this framework by developing the corresponding technique for countably closed models of size continuum. The applications range from various theorems on paradoxical decompositions of the plane, to coloring sparse set systems, results on graph chromatic number and constructions from point-set topology. Our main purpose is to demonstra…
We show that splitting forcing does not have the weak Sacks property below any condition, answering a question of Laguzzi, Mildenberger and Stuber-Rousselle. We also show how some partition results for splitting trees hold or fail and we determine the value of cardinal invariants after an $ω_2$-length countable support iteration of splitting forcing.
We investigate the partial orderings of the form (P(X),\subset), where X is a countable binary relational structure and P(X) the set of the domains of its isomorphic substructures and show that if the components of X are maximally embeddable and satisfy an additional condition related to connectivity, then the poset (P(X),\subset) is forcing equivalent to a finite power of (P(ω)/Fin)^+, or to (P(ω\times ω)/(Fin \times Fin))^+, or to the direct product (P(Δ)/ED_fin)^+ \times ((P(ω)/Fin)^+)^n, for some n \in ω. In particular we obtain forcing equivalents of the posets of copies of countable equi…
We prove that if there exists a simplified $(ω_1,2)$-morass, then there is a ccc forcing which adds an $ω_3$-chain in P($ω_1$) mod finite and a ccc forcing which adds a family of $ω_3$-many strongly almost disjoint functions from $ω_1$ to $ω$. The idea is to use a finite support iteration of countable forcings which is not linear but three-dimensional.
We show that in a model obtained by forcing with a countable support iteration of length omega_2 of Mathias forcing h(2), the distributivity number of r.o.(P(omega)/fin)^2, is omega_1 but h, the one of P(omega)/fin, is omega_2.
We reimplement the creature forcing construction used by Fischer et al. (arXiv:1402.0367) to separate Cichoń's diagram into five cardinals as a countable support product. Using the fact that it is of countable support, we augment our construction by adding uncountably many additional cardinal characteristics, sometimes referred to as localisation cardinals.

In the paper we probe the possibilities of creating a Kurepa tree in a generic extension of a model of CH plus no Kurepa trees by an omega_1-preserving forcing notion of size at most omega_1. In the first section we show that in the Levy model obtained by collapsing all cardinals between omega_1 and a strongly inaccessible cardinal by forcing with a countable support Levy collapsing order many omega_1-preserving forcing notions of size at most omega_1 including all omega-proper forcing notions and some proper but not omega-proper forcing notions of size at most omega_1 do not create Kurepa tre…
