Polyak showed that any Milnor's $\overlineμ$-invariant of length 3 can be represented as a combination of Conway polynomials of knots obtained by certain band sum of the link components. On the other hand, Habegger and Lin showed that Milnor invariants are also invariants for string links, called $μ$-invariants. We show that any Milnor's $μ$-invariant of length $\leq k+2$ can be represented as a combination of the HOMFLYPT polynomials of knots obtained from the string link by some operation, if all $μ$-invariants of length $\leq k$ vanish. Moreover, $μ$-invariants of length $3$ are given by a combination of the Conway polynomials and linking numbers without any vanishing assumption.
We give formulas expressing Milnor invariants of an n-component link L in the 3-sphere in terms of the HOMFLYPT polynomial as follows. If the Milnor invariant \barμ_J(L) vanishes for any sequence J with length at most k, then any Milnor \barμ-invariant \barμ_I(L) with length between 3 and 2k+1 can be represented as a combination of HOMFLYPT polynomial of knots obtained from the link by certain band sum operations. In particular, the `first non vanishing' Milnor invariants can be always represented as such a linear combination.
J.-B. Meilhan and the second author showed that any Milnor $\barμ$-invariant of length between 3 and $2k+1$ can be represented as a combination of HOMFLYPT polynomial of knots obtained by certain band sum of the link components, if all $\barμ$-invariants of length $\leq k$ vanish. They also showed that their formula does not hold for length $2k+2$. In this paper, we improve their formula to give the $\barμ$-invariants of length $2k+2$ by adding correction terms. The correction terms can be given by a combination of HOMFLYPT polynomial of knots determined by $\barμ$-invariants of length $k+1$. …
We prove that the degree of the Hilbert polynomial of the HOMFLYPT homology of a closed braid $B$ is $l-1$, where $l$ is the number of components of $B$. This controls the growth of the HOMFLYPT homology with respect to its polynomial grading. The Hilbert polynomial also reveals a link polynomial hidden in the HOMFLYPT polynomial.
We describe the polynomial time complexity algorithm for computing first coefficients of the skein (Homflypt) and Kauffman polynomial invariants of links, discovered by D.Vertigan in 1992 but never published.
Extended strongly periodic links have been introduced by Przytycki and Sokolov as a symmetric surgery presentation of three-manifolds on which the finite cyclic group acts without fixed points. The purpose of this paper is to prove that the symmetry of these links is reflected by the first coefficients of the HOMFLYPT polynomial.
Associated with each oriented link is the two variable Homflypt polynomial. The Morton-Franks-Williams (MFW) inequality gives rise to an expression for the Homflypt polynomial with MFW coefficient polynomials. These MFW coefficient polynomials are labelled in a braid-dependent manner and may be zero, but display a number of interesting relations. One consequence is an expression for the first three Laurent coefficient polynomials in z as a function of the other coefficient polynomials and three link invariants: the minimum v-degree and v-span of the Homflypt polynomial, and the Conway polynomi…
We compare the invariant for classical knots and links defined using the Juyumaya trace on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras with the HOMFLYPT polynomial. We show that the two invariants, as maps on the set ${\mathcal L}$ of oriented link types in $S^3$, do not coincide except in a few trivial cases.
The Vassiliev conjecture states that the Vassiliev invariants are dense in the space of all numerical link invariants in the sense that any link invariant is a pointwise limit of Vassiliev invariants. In this article, we prove that the Vassiliev conjecture holds in the case of the coefficients of the HOMFLY and the Kauffman polynomials.
We explore Jaeger's state model for the HOMFLYPT polynomial. We reformulate this model in the language of Gauss diagrams and use it to obtain Gauss diagram formulas for a two-parameter family of Vassiliev invariants coming from the HOMFLYPT polynomial. These formulas are new already for invariants of degree 3.
In arXiv:math/0508510, Rasmussen observed that the Khovanov-Rozansky homology of a link is a finitely generated module over the polynomial ring generated by the components of this link. In the current paper, we study the module structure of the middle HOMFLYPT homology, especially the Betti numbers of this module. For each link, these Betti numbers are supported on a finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^4$. One can easily recover from these Betti numbers the Poincaré polynomial of the middle HOMFLYPT homology. We explain why the Betti numbers can be viewed as a generalization of the reduced HOMFLYPT h…
In this article, we adjust the Yang-Baxter operators constructed by Jones for the HOMFLYPT polynomal. Then we compute the second homology for this family of Yang-Baxter operators. It has the potential to yield 2-cocycle invariant for links.
We describe completely the link invariants constructed using Markov traces on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras in terms of the linking matrix and the HOMFLYPT polynomials of sublinks.
We show how to construct unitary representations of the oriented Thompson group $\vec{F}$ from oriented link invariants. In particular we show that the suitably normalised HOMFLYPT polynomial defines a positive definite function of $\vec{F}$.
Given any oriented link diagram, two types of new knot invariants are constructed. They satisfy some generalized skein relations. The coefficients of each invariant is from a commutative ring. Homomorphisms and representations of those rings define new link invariants. For example, the HOMFLYPT polynomial with three variables. In this sense, type one invariant is a generalization of the HOMFLYPT polynomial. Those invariants can also be modified by writhe and parameterized to get more powerful invariants. For example, the modified type one invariant distinguishes mutants, and the parameterized …
The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, we give a fully geometric description of the HOMFLYPT homology of Khovanov-Rozansky. Our method is to construct this invariant in terms of the cohomology of various sheaves on certain algebraic groups, in the same spirit as the authors' previous work on Soergel bimodules. All the differentials and gradings which appear in the construction of HOMFLYPT homology are given a geometric interpretation. In fact, with only minor modifications, we can extend this construction to give a categorification of the colored HOMFLYPT polynomial, colored HOMFLYPT homolo…
This article provides an overview of relative strengths of polynomial invariants of knots and links, such as the Alexander, Jones, Homflypt, and Kaufman two-variable polynomial, Khovanov homology, factorizability of the polynomials, and knot primeness detection.
We prove that the HOMFLYPT polynomial of a link, colored by partitions with a fixed number of rows is a $q$-holonomic function. Specializing to the case of knots colored by a partition with a single row, it proves the existence of an $(a,q)$ super-polynomial of knots in 3-space, as was conjectured by string theorists. Our proof uses skew Howe duality that reduces the evaluation of web diagrams and their ladders to a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt computation of an auxiliary quantum group of rank the number of strings of the ladder diagram.
Milnor fibrations were extended by Mutsuo Oka for certain mixed polynomial. In this paper, we study singular points of differentiable maps into the 2-dimensional torus, called Milnor fibration product maps, obtained by several Milnor fibrations for mixed polynomial. We give a characterization of singular points of such product maps, and for the case of certain polar weighted homogeneous polynomials, a criterion for a fold singular point.
In this paper we announce the existence of a family of new $2$-variable polynomial invariants for oriented classical links defined via a Markov trace on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra of type $A$. Yokonuma-Hecke algebras are generalizations of Iwahori-Hecke algebras, and this family contains the Homflypt polynomial, the famous $2$-variable invariant for classical links arising from the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$. We show that these invariants are topologically equivalent to the Homflypt polynomial on knots, but not on links, by providing pairs of Homflypt-equivalent links that are distingui…
In this paper we study properties of the Markov trace ${\rm tr}_d$ and the specialized trace ${\rm tr}_{d,D}$ on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras, such as behaviour under inversion of a word, connected sums and mirror imaging. We then define invariants for framed, classical and singular links through the trace ${\rm tr}_{d,D}$ and also invariants for transverse links through the trace ${\rm tr}_d$. In order to compare the invariants for classical links with the Homflypt polynomial we develop computer programs and we evaluate them on several Homflypt-equivalent pairs of knots and links. Our computat…
This article provides an overview of relative strengths of polynomial invariants of knots and links, such as the Alexander, Jones, Homflypt, Kaufman two-variable polynomial, and Khovanov polynomial.
In~\cite{Kim} the author generalized the Conway algebra and constructed the invariant valued in the generalized Conway algebra defined by applying two skein relations to crossings, which is called a generalized Conway type invariant. The generalized Conway type invariant is a generalization of Homflypt polynomial. In this paper we show that an example of links, which have the same value of Homflypt polynomial, but have different values of the generalized Conway type invariant. We study a properties of Conway type invariant related to Vassiliev invariant. In section 3 we discuss about further r…
For knots in $S^3$, it is well-known that the Alexander polynomial of a ribbon knot factorizes as $f(t)f(t^{-1})$ for some polynomial $f(t)$. By contrast, the Alexander polynomial of a ribbon $2$-knot is not even symmetric in general. Via an alternative notion of ribbon $2$-knots, we give a topological condition on a $2$-knot that implies the factorization of the Alexander polynomial.
New invariants of links are constructed using the skein invariant polynomial of colored links defined by the author in [1]. These invariants are stronger than the homflypt polynomial.
The Homflypt and Kauffman skein modules of the projective space are computed. Both are free and generated by some infinite set of links. This set may be chosen to be L_n, where L_n is an arbitrary link consisting of n projective lines for n>0, and L_0 is an affine unknot.
We use topology of configuration spaces to give a characterization of Neuwirth--Stallings pairs $(S^5, K)$ with $\dim K = 2$. As a consequence, we construct polynomial map germs $(\mathbb{R}^{6},0)\to (\mathbb{R}^{3},0)$ with an isolated singularity at the origin such that their Milnor fibers are not diffeomorphic to a disk, thus putting an end to Milnor's non-triviality question. Furthermore, for a polynomial map germ $(\mathbb{R}^{2n},0) \to (\mathbb{R}^{n},0)$ or $(\mathbb{R}^{2n+1},0) \to (\mathbb{R}^{n},0)$, $n \geq 3$, with an isolated singularity at the origin, we study the conditions u…
In this survey we summarize results regarding the Kauffman bracket, HOMFLYPT, Kauffman 2-variable and Dubrovnik skein modules, and the Alexander polynomial of links in lens spaces, which we represent as mixed link diagrams. These invariants generalize the corresponding knot polynomials in the classical case. We compare the invariants by means of the ability to distinguish between some difficult cases of knots with certain symmetries.
In this paper, we construct quantum invariants for knotoid diagrams in $\mathbb{R}^2$. The diagrams are arranged with respect to a given direction in the plane ({\it Morse knotoids}). A Morse knotoid diagram can be decomposed into basic elementary diagrams each of which is associated to a matrix that yields solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. We recover the bracket polynomial, and define the rotational bracket polynomial, the binary bracket polynomial, the Alexander polynomial, the generalized Alexander polynomial and an infinity of specializations of the Homflypt polynomial for Mor…
In the present paper, we study deformations of polar weighted homogeneous polynomials which are also polar weighted homogeneous polynomials. We describe a round handle decomposition of the Milnor fibration of a deformation of a polar weighted homogeneous polynomial concretely and give the number of round handles by the number of positive and negative components of the links of singularities appearing before and after the deformation. We also give a formula of characteristic polynomials of these singularities by using the decomposition of the monodromy of the Milnor fibration induced by a round…
Topological polymers have various topological types, and they are expressed by graphs. However, the Jones polynomial, we have a difficulty to compute it; computational time is growing exponentially with respect to the crossing number. The simplest Vassiliev invariant is the linking number and thus we will seek a next simple one is as the Milnor's triple linking number. In this paper, we introduce simple Gauss diagram formulas of Vassiliev invariants of Milnor type. These are non-torsion valued, whereas the base-point-free Milnor's triple linking number is usually torsion-valued.
We study relations between the Alexander-Conway polynomial $\nabla_L$ and Milnor higher linking numbers of links from the point of view of finite-type (Vassiliev) invariants. We give a formula for the first non-vanishing coefficient of $\nabla_L$ of an m-component link L all of whose Milnor numbers $μ_{i_1... i_p}$ vanish for $p\le n$. We express this coefficient as a polynomial in Milnor numbers of L. Depending on whether the parity of n is odd or even, the terms in this polynomial correspond either to spanning trees in certain graphs or to decompositions of certain 3-graphs into pairs of spa…
For Poincare series of binary polyhedral groups and Coxeter polynomials there are obtained statements close to the Euclid algorithm and orthogonal polynomials theory: generalized Ebeling formula, decompositions into ramified continued fractions, Christoffel-Darboux identity, combinatorial formula. Known results about the factorization of the Alexander-Conway polynomial permit to connect Poincare series and Coxeter polynomials with the Burau representation and Milnor invariants of string links. One uses reconstractions of A'Campo links and Coxeter links. There is formulated a conjecture connect…
We prove that the so-called t algebra of braids and ties supports a Markov trace. Further, by using this trace in the Jones' recipe, we define invariant polynomials for classical knots and singular knots. Our invariants have three parameters. The invariant of classical knots is an extension of the Homflypt polynomial and the invariant of singular knots is an extension of an invariant of singular knots previously defined by S. Lambropoulou and the second author.
We give a global version of Le-Ramanujam mu-constant theorem for polynomials. Let f_t, (t in [0,1]), be a family of polynomials of n complex variables with isolated singularities, whose coefficients are polynomials in t. We consider the case where some numerical invariants are constant (the affine Milnor number, the Milnor number at infinity, the number of critical values, the number of affine critical values, the number of critical values at infinity). Let n=2, we also suppose the degree of the f_t is a constant, then the polynomials f_0 and f_1 are topologically equivalent. For n>3 we suppos…
The paper concerns the tree invariants of string links, introduced by Kravchenko and Polyak and closely related to the classical Milnor linking numbers also known as $\barμ$--invariants. We prove that, analogously as for $\barμ$--invariants, certain residue classes of tree invariants yield link homotopy invariants of closed links. The proof is arrow diagramatic and provides a more geometric insight into the indeterminacy through certain tree stacking operations. Further, we show that the indeterminacy of tree invariants is consistent with the original Milnor's indeterminacy. For practical purp…
If the twist numbers of a collection of oriented alternating link diagrams are bounded, then the Alexander polynomials of the corresponding links have bounded euclidean Mahler measure (see Definition 1.2). The converse assertion does not hold. Similarly, if a collection of oriented link diagrams, not necessarily alternating, have bounded twist numbers, then both the Jones polynomials and a parametrization of the 2-variable Homflypt polynomials of the corresponding links have bounded Mahler measure.
We describe how to compute topological objects associated to a polynomial map of several complex variables with isolated singularities. These objects are: the affine critical values, the affine Milnor numbers for all irregular fibers, the critical values at infinity, and the Milnor numbers at infinity for all irregular fibers. Then for a family of polynomials we detect parameters where the topology of the polynomials can change. Implementation and examples are given with the computer algebra system Singular.
Given any oriented link diagram, one can construct knot invariants using skein relations. Usually such a skein relation contains three or four terms. In this paper, the author introduces several new ways to smooth a crossings, and uses a system of skein equations to construct link invariant. This invariant can also be modified by writhe to get a more powerful invariant. The modified invariant is a generalization of both the HOMFLYPT polynomial and the two-variable Kauffman polynomial. Using the diamond lemma, a simplified version of the modified invariant is given. It is easy to compute and is…
In a recent paper, Dimca and Nemethi pose the problem of finding a homogeneous polynomial f such that the homology of the complement of the hypersurface defined by f is torsion-free, but the homology of the Milnor fiber of f has torsion. We prove that this is indeed possible, and show by construction that, for each prime p, there is a polynomial with p-torsion in the homology of the Milnor fiber. The techniques make use of properties of characteristic varieties of hyperplane arrangements.
Milnor's $\barμ$-invariants of links in the $3$-sphere $S^3$ vanish on any link concordant to a boundary link. In particular, they are trivial on any knot in $S^3$. Here we consider knots in thickened surfaces $Σ\times [0,1]$, where $Σ$ is closed and oriented. We construct new concordance invariants by adapting the Chen-Milnor theory of links in $S^3$ to an extension of the group of a virtual knot. A key ingredient is the Bar-Natan $\textit{Zh}$ map, which allows for a geometric interpretation of the group extension. The group extension itself was originally defined by Silver-Williams. Our ext…
Following the recent work by Chan, and by Morton and Hadji on the Homflypt polynomials of some generalized Hopf links, we investigate the Kauffman polynomials of generalized Hopf links. By studying the Kauffman skein module of the solid torus S^1\times D^2, we establish a similar skein map on the Kauffman skein module of S^1\times D^2 which has distinct eigenvalues. Furthermore we are able to calculate the Kauffman polynomials of some specific generalized Hopf links.
We calculate the eta-invariant for the odd signature operator relative to a specific submersion metric on the Milnor fibration of a quasihomogeneous hypersurface singularity using certain global boundary conditions in terms of the data of its fibre intersection form, monodromy and variation mapping resp. the monomial data of its Milnor algebra. This is done by representing this eta-invariant as the eta-invariant of the odd signature operator on a certain closed fibrewise double of the original bundle and expressing the latter as the mapping cylinder of a specific fibrewise isometry. In this si…
In this chapter (Chapter III) we introduce the concept of Conway algebras (the notion related to entropic magmas) and describe invariants of links yielded by (partial) Conway algebras (including the Homflypt polynomial and signatures). We present, in detail, a proof (following the original Przytycki-Traczyk 1984 proof) of the existence of Conway type invariants. Then we describe Kauffman's method of constructing link invariants, in particular, giving the Kauffman polynomial of two variables. We develop a formalism, Kauffman algebras, analogous to that of Conway algebras. This chapter, along wi…
For a polynomial $f$ in two complex variables, we prove that the multi-link at infinity of the 0-fiber $f^{-1}(0)$ is a fibred multi-link if and only if all the values different from 0 are regular at infinity.
In this paper we first present the construction of the new 2-variable classical link invariants arising from the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras ${\rm Y}_{d,n}(q)$, which are not topologically equivalent to the Homflypt polynomial. We then present the algebra ${\rm FTL}_{d,n}(q)$ which is the appropriate Temperley-Lieb analogue of ${\rm Y}_{d,n}(q)$, as well as the related 1-variable classical link invariants, which in turn are not topologically equivalent to the Jones polynomial. Finally, we present the algebra of braids and ties which is related to the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra, and also its quotient, …
The purpose of this paper is to present a certain combinatorial method of constructing invariants of isotopy classes of oriented tame links. This arises as a generalization of the known polynomial invariants of Conway and Jones. These invariants have one striking common feature. If L+, L- and L0 are diagrams of oriented links which are identical, except near one crossing point (as in Conway or Jones polynomials), then an invariant w(L) has the property: w(L+) is uniquely determined by w(L-) and w(L0), and also w(L-) is uniquely determined by w(L+) and w(L0). To formalize this property we intro…
We consider a continuous family $(f_s)$, $s\in[0,1]$ of complex polynomials in two variables with isolated singularities, that are Newton non-degenerate. We suppose that the Euler characteristic of a generic fiber is constant (or equivalently the sum of the affine Milnor number and the Milnor number at infinity $μ(s)+λ(s)$ is constant). We firstly prove that the set of critical values at infinity depends continuously on $s$, and secondly that the degree of the $f_s$ is constant (up to an algebraic automorphism of $\Cc^2$).
We show that if a braid $B$ can be parametrised in a certain way, then previous work can be extended to a construction of a polynomial $f:\mathbb{R}^4\to\mathbb{R}^2$ with the closure of $B$ as the link of an isolated singularity of $f$, showing that the closure of $B$ is real algebraic. In particular, we prove that closures of squares of strictly homogeneous braids and certain lemniscate links are real algebraic. We also show that the constructed polynomials satisfy the strong Milnor condition, providing an explicit fibration of the complement of the closure of $B$ over $S^1$.
Tied links and the tied braid monoid were introduced recently by the authors and used to define new invariants for classical links. Here, we give a version purely algebraic-combinatoric of tied links. With this new version we prove that the tied braid monoid has a decomposition like a semi--direct group product. By using this decomposition we reprove the Alexander and Markov theorem for tied links; also, we introduce the tied singular knots, the tied singular braid monoid and certain families of Homflypt type invariants for tied singular links; these invariants are five-variables polynomials. …
A Gauss diagram is a simple, combinatorial way to present a knot. It is known that any Vassiliev invariant may be obtained from a Gauss diagram formula that involves counting (with signs and multiplicities) subdiagrams of certain combinatorial types. These formulas generalize the calculation of a linking number by counting signs of crossings in a link diagram. Until recently, explicit formulas of this type were known only for few invariants of low degrees. In this paper we present simple formulas for an infinite family of invariants in terms of counting surfaces of a certain genus and number o…
