We give a global version of Le-Ramanujam mu-constant theorem for polynomials. Let f_t, (t in [0,1]), be a family of polynomials of n complex variables with isolated singularities, whose coefficients are polynomials in t. We consider the case where some numerical invariants are constant (the affine Milnor number, the Milnor number at infinity, the number of critical values, the number of affine critical values, the number of critical values at infinity). Let n=2, we also suppose the degree of the f_t is a constant, then the polynomials f_0 and f_1 are topologically equivalent. For n>3 we suppose that critical values at infinity depend continuously on t, then we prove that the geometric monodromy representations of the f_t, are all equivalent.
In the present paper, we study deformations of polar weighted homogeneous polynomials which are also polar weighted homogeneous polynomials. We describe a round handle decomposition of the Milnor fibration of a deformation of a polar weighted homogeneous polynomial concretely and give the number of round handles by the number of positive and negative components of the links of singularities appearing before and after the deformation. We also give a formula of characteristic polynomials of these singularities by using the decomposition of the monodromy of the Milnor fibration induced by a round…
We consider a real analytic map $F=(f_1,...,f_k) : (\mathbb{R}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{R}^k,0)$, $2 \le k \le n-1$, that satisfies Milnor's conditions (a) and (b) introduced by D. Massey. This implies that every real analytic $f_I=(f_{i_1},...,f_{i_l}) : (\mathbb{R}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{R}^l,0)$, induced from $F$ by projections where $1 \le l \le n-2$ and $I=\{i_1,...,i_l\}$, also satisfies Milnor's conditions (a) and (b). We give several relations between the Euler characteristics of the Milnor fibre of $F$, the Milnor fibres of the maps $f_I$, the link of $F^{-1}(0)$ and the links of …
The category of finite Milnor-Witt correspondences, introduced by Calmès and Fasel, provides a new type of correspondences closer to the motivic homotopy theoretic framework than Suslin-Voevodsky's correspondences. A fundamental result of the theory of ordinary correspondences concerns homotopy invariance of sheaves with transfers, and in the present paper we address this question in the setting of Milnor-Witt correspondences. Employing techniques due to Druzhinin, Fasel-Østvær and Garkusha-Panin, we show that homotopy invariance of presheaves with Milnor-Witt transfers is preserved under Nisn…
We discuss combinatorial invariance of the betti numbers of the Milnor fiber for arrangements of lines with points of multiplicity at most three and describe a link between this problem and enumeration of solutions of the Catalan equation over function field in the case when its coefficients are products of linear forms and the equation defines an elliptic curve.
In this paper we present new results about the topology of the Milnor fibrations of analytic function-germs with a special attention to the topology of the fibers. In particular, we provide a short review on the existence of the Milnor fibrations in the real and complex cases. This allows us to compare our results with the previous ones.
In analogy with the holomorphic case, we compare the topology of Milnor fibrations associated to a meromorphic germ f/g : the local Milnor fibrations given on Milnor tubes over punctured discs around the critical values of f/g, and the Milnor fibration on a sphere.
In this article we study the topology of a family of real analytic germs $F \colon (\mathbb{C}^3,0) \to (\mathbb{C},0)$ with isolated critical point at 0, given by $F(x,y,z)=f(x,y)\bar{g(x,y)}+z^r$, where $f$ and $g$ are holomorphic, $r \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ and $r \geq 2$. We describe the link $L_F$ as a graph manifold using its natural open book decomposition, related to the Milnor fibration of the map-germ $f \bar{g}$ and the description of its monodromy as a quasi-periodic diffeomorphism through its Nielsen invariants. Furthermore, such a germ $F$ gives rise to a Milnor fibration $\frac{F}{|F|…
We prove that for two germs of analytic mappings $f,g\colon (\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C}^p,0)$ with the same Newton polyhedra which are (Khovanskii) non-degenerate and their zero sets are complete intersections with isolated singularity at the origin, there is a piecewise analytic family $\{f_t\}$ of analytic maps with $f_0=f, f_1=g$ which has a so-called {\it uniform stable radius for the Milnor fibration}. As a corollary, we show that their Milnor numbers are equal. Also, a formula for the Milnor number is given in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the component functions. This is…
We describe how to compute topological objects associated to a polynomial map of several complex variables with isolated singularities. These objects are: the affine critical values, the affine Milnor numbers for all irregular fibers, the critical values at infinity, and the Milnor numbers at infinity for all irregular fibers. Then for a family of polynomials we detect parameters where the topology of the polynomials can change. Implementation and examples are given with the computer algebra system Singular.
The definition of Milnor-Witt cycle modules in [Feld, N., Milnor-Witt cycle modules, Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 224 (2020) 106298] can easily be adapted over general regular base schemes. However, there are simple examples to show that Gersten complex fails to be exact for cycle modules in general if the base is not a field. The goal of this article is to show that, for a restricted class of Milnor-Witt cycle modules over an excellent DVR satisfying an extra axiom, called here as R5, the expected properties of exactness of Gersten complex and $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariance hold. Moreover R…
We consider the topology for a class of hypersurfaces with highly nonisolated singularites which arise as exceptional orbit varieties of a special class of prehomogeneous vector spaces, which are representations of linear algebraic groups with open orbits. These hypersurface singularities include both determinantal hypersurfaces and linear free (and free*) divisors. Although these hypersurfaces have highly nonisolated singularities, we determine the topology of their Milnor fibers, complements and links. We do so by using the action of linear algebraic groups beginning with the complement, ins…
In this paper we use the results from the first part to compute the vanishing topology for matrix singularities based on certain spaces of matrices. We place the variety of singular matrices in a geometric configuration of free divisors which are the "exceptional orbit varieties" for repesentations of solvable groups. Because there are towers of representations for towers of solvable groups, the free divisors actually form a tower of free divisors $E_n$, and we give an inductive procedure for computing the vanishing topology of the matrix singularities. The inductive procedure we use is an ext…
This note is the observation that a simple combination of known results shows that the usual analytic invariants of a finitely determined multi-germ $f\colon (\mathbb{C}^2,S)\to(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$ ---namely the image Milnor number $μ_I$, the number of crosscaps and triple points, $C$ and $T$, and the Milnor number $μ(Σ)$ of the curve of double points in the target--- depend only on the embedded topological type of the image of $f$. As a consequence one obtains the topological invariance of the sign-refined Smale invariant for immersions $j\colon S^3\looparrowright S^5$ associated to finitely det…
WeintroducethenotionofderivedformalnoncommutativeZariski immersion for differential graded algebra with examples from topology. We il- lustrate the importance of such notion by reformulating the Friedlander-Milnor conjecture in terms of formal noncommutative Zariski immersions. This paper is based on the language developed by Dwyer, Greenless and Iyendar.
We describe a new relation between the topology of hyperplane arrangements, Milnor fibers and global polar curves, via the affine Lefschetz theory developped by A. Némethi. In particular, we improve some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and complete/clarify a proof by Randell concerning the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see math.AT/0011101).
We show three basic properties on the image Milnor number $μ_I(f)$ of a germ $f\colon(\mathbb{C}^{n},S)\rightarrow(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$ with isolated instability. First, we show the conservation of the image Milnor number, from which one can deduce the upper semi-continuity and the topological invariance for families. Second, we prove the weak Mond's conjecture, which says that $μ_I(f)=0$ if and only if $f$ is stable. Finally, we show a conjecture by Houston that any family $f_t\colon(\mathbb{C}^{n},S)\rightarrow(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$ with $μ_I(f_t)$ constant is excellent in Gaffney's sense. By…
We study a simplicial mixed polynomial of cyclic type and its associated weighted homogeneous polynomial. In the present paper, we show that their links are diffeomorphic and their Milnor fibrations are isomorphic.
Let $(X,0) \subset (\mathbb{R}^n,0)$ be the germ of a closed subanalytic set and let $f$ and $g : (X,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{R},0)$ be two subanalytic functions. Under some conditions, we relate the critical points of $g$ on the real Milnor fibre $X \cap f^{-1}(δ) \cap B_ε$, $0 <| δ| \ll ε\ll 1$, to the topology of this fibre and other related subanalytic sets. As an application, when $g$ is a generic linear function, we obtain an "asymptotic" Gauss-Bonnet formula for the real Milnor fibre of $f$. From this Gauss-Bonnet formula, we deduce "infinitesimal" linear kinematic formulas.
We study the topology of a line singularity, which is a complex hypersurface with non-isolated singularity given by a complex line. We describe the degeneration of its Milnor fibre to the singular hypersurface by means of a pair of polyhedra, one in the Milnor fibre and other in the singular fibre, which are deformation retracts of the corresponding fibres; and a continuous map taking the Milnor fibre to the singular fibre and the first polyhedron to the second one, which restrict to a homeomorphism outside the polyhedra. In the same sense, we also study the topology of a complex isolated sing…
We show how some of our recent results clarify the relationship between the Lê numbers and the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of a non-isolated hypersurface singularity. The Lê numbers are actually the ranks of the free Abelian groups -- the Lê modules -- appearing in a complex whose cohomology is that of the Milnor fiber. Moreover, the Milnor monodromy acts on the Lê module complex, and we describe the traces of these monodromy actions in terms of the topology of the critical locus.
We prove that the boundaries of the Milnor fibers of smoothings of non-isolated reduced complex surface singularities are graph manifolds. Moreover, we give a method, inspired by previous work of Némethi and Szilard, to compute associated plumbing graphs.
Milnor's fibration theorem is about the geometry and topology of real and complex analytic maps near their critical points, a ubiquitous theme in mathematics. As such, after 50 years, this has become a whole area of research on its own, with a vast literature, plenty of different viewpoints, a large progeny and connections with many other branches of mathematics. In this work we revisit the classical theory in both the real and complex settings, and we glance at some areas of current research and connections with other important topics. The purpose of this article is two-fold. On the one hand,…
We give a topological model for a polynomial map from $\C^n$ to $\C$ in the neighborhood of a fiber with isolated singularities. This is motivated out of the ``unfolding of links'' described earlier by the first author and Lee Rudolph. The topological model gives a useful encoding of the local and global monodromy for the map. The new ingredients --- the topology of the singularities at infinity of an irregular fiber, as encoded by the Milnor fibers at infinity and the monodromy maps on these Milnor fibers --- are recoverable for n=2 in full from the link at infinity of the irregular fiber. Th…
We survey interactions between the topology and the combinatorics of complex hyperplane arrangements. Without claiming to be exhaustive, we examine in this setting combinatorial aspects of fundamental groups, associated graded Lie algebras, higher homotopy groups, cohomology rings, twisted homology with rank 1 complex coefficients, and Milnor fibers.
In this paper, we prove that the Milnor fibre of a singularity over an i.c.i.s. of dimension 3 has the homotopy type of a bouquet of spheres, provided that the function that defines the singularity has finite extended codimension with respect to the ideal that defines the i.c.i.s.
This article recounts the interaction of topology and singularity theory (mainly singularities of complex algebraic varieties) which started in the early part of this century and bloomed in the 1960's with the work of Hirzebruch, Brieskorn, Milnor and others. Some of the topics are followed to the present day. (A chapter for the book "History of Topology", ed. I. M. James)
In this article, we study the topology of real analytic germs $F \colon (\C^3,0) \to (\C,0)$ given by $F(x,y,z)=\overline{xy}(x^p+y^q)+z^r$ with $p,q,r \in \N$, $p,q,r \geq 2$ and $(p,q)=1$. Such a germ gives rise to a Milnor fibration $\frac{F}{\mid F \mid} \colon \Sp^5\setminus L_F \to \Sp^1$. We describe the link $L_F$ as a Seifert manifold and we show that in many cases the open-book decomposition of $\Sp^5$ given by the Milnor fibration of $F$ cannot come from the Milnor fibration of a complex singularity in $\C^3$.
We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. In particular we show that any projective hypersurface has affine parts which are bouquets of spheres. The main tools are the polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm, D.T. Lê and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result). This is then…
We study the Euler characteristic of the real Milnor fibres of a real analytic map, using a relation between complex monodromy and complex conjugation. We deduce the result of Coste and Kurdyka that the Euler characteristic of the link of an irreducible algebraic subset of a real algebraic set is generically constant modulo 4. We generalize this result to iterated links of ordered families of algebraic subsets.
These are lecture notes from the conference Arithmetic Topology at the Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences on applications of Morel's A1-degree to questions in enumerative geometry. Additionally, we give a new dynamic interpretation of the A1-Milnor number inspired by the first named author's enrichment of dynamic intersection numbers.
We use the notion of Milnor fibres of the germ of a meromorphic function and the method of partial resolutions for a study of topology of a polynomial map at infinity (mainly for calculation of the zeta-function of a monodromy). It gives effective methods of computation of the zeta-function for a number of cases and a criterium for a value to be atypical at infinity.
We classify singularities at infinity of polynomials of degree 3 in 3 variables, $ f (x_0, x_1, x_2) = f_1 (x_0, x_1, x_2) + f_2 (x_0, x_1, x_2) + f_3 (x_0, x_1, x_2) $, $ f_i $ homogeneous polynomial of degree $ i $, $ i = 1,2,3 $. Based on this classification, we calculate the jump in the Milnor number of an isolated singularity at infinity, when we pass from the special fiber to a generic fiber. As an application of the results, we investigate the existence of global fibrations of degree 3 polynomials in $\mathbb{C}^3$ and search for information about the topology of the fibers in each equi…
We study invariance of multiplicity of complex analytic germs and degree of complex affine sets under outer bi-Lipschitz transformations (outer bi-Lipschitz homeomorphims of germs in the first case and outer bi-Lipschitz homeomorphims at infinity in the second case). We prove that invariance of multiplicity in the local case is equivalent to invariance of degree in the global case. We prove invariance for curves and surfaces. In the way we prove invariance of the tangent cone and relative multiplicities at infinity under outer bi-Lipschitz homeomorphims at infinity, and that the abstract topol…
Let $\mathrm{R}$ be a real closed field. We prove that the number of semi-algebraically connected components of a real hypersurface in $\mathrm{R}^n$ defined by a multi-affine polynomial of degree $d$ is bounded by $2^{d-1}$. This bound is sharp and is independent of $n$ (as opposed to the classical bound of $d(2d -1)^{n-1}$ on the Betti numbers of hypersurfaces defined by arbitrary polynomials of degree $d$ in $\mathrm{R}^n$ due to Petrovski{\uı} and Ole{\uı}nik, Thom and Milnor). Moreover, we show there exists $c > 1$, such that given a sequence $(B_n)_{n >0}$ where $B_n$ is a closed ball in…
Given a polynomial map $ψ:S^m\to \mathbb{R}^k$ with components of degree $d$, we investigate the structure of the semialgebraic set $Z\subseteq S^m$ consisting of those points where $ψ$ and its derivatives satisfy a given list of polynomial equalities and inequalities (we call such a set a "singularity"). Concerning the upper estimate on the topological complexity of a polynomial singularity, we sharpen the classical bound $b(Z)\leq O(d^{m+1})$, proved by Milnor, with \begin{equation}\label{eq:abstract} b(Z)\leq O(d^{m}),\end{equation} which holds for the generic polynomial map. For what conce…
