Raman spectra of rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS) were measured under pressures up to 34 GPa at room temperature. No pressure-induced structural phase transition was observed, while strong pressure shift of Raman bands towards higher wavenumbers has been revealed. IR spectroscopy as a complementary technique has been used in order to completely describe the phonon modes of r-BS. All experimentally observed bands have been compared with theoretically calculated ones and modes assignment has been performed. r-BS enriched by 10B isotope was synthesized, and the effect of boron isotopic substitution on Raman spectra was observed and analyzed.
We present results from ab initio calculations of the mechanical properties of the rhombohedral phase (beta) of vanadium metal reported in recent experiments, and other predicted high-pressure phases (gamma and bcc), focusing on properties relevant to dynamic experiments. We find that the volume change associated with these transitions is small: no more than 0.15% (for beta - gamma). Calculations of the single crystal and polycrystal elastic moduli (stress-strain coefficients) reveal a remarkably small discontinuity in the shear modulus and other elastic properties across the phase transitions…
Results of the first-principles calculations are presented for the group-VB metals V, Nb and Ta up to couple of megabar pressure. An unique structural phase transition sequence BCC-->(at 60 GPa) rhombohedral (angle=110.5 degree)-->(at ~ 160 GPa)rhombohedral(angle=108.5 degree)--> (at ~ 430 GPa) BCC is predicted in V. We also find that BCC-V becomes mechanically and vibrationally unstable at around 112 GPa pressure. Similar transitions are absent in Nb and Ta.
The double-resonance (DR) Raman process is a signature of all sp2 carbon material and provide fundamental information of the electronic structure and phonon dispersion in graphene, carbon nanotubes and different graphite-type materials. We have performed in this work the study of different DR Raman bands of rhombohedral graphite using five different excitation laser energies and obtained the dispersion of the different DR features by changing the laser energy. Results are compared with those of Bernal graphite and shows that rhombohedral graphite exhibit a richer DR Raman spectrum. For example…
In this paper we report a new high-pressure rhombohedral phase of Ce2Zr2O8 observed from high-pressure angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies up to nearly 12 GPa. The ambient-pressure cubic phase of Ce2Zr2O8 transforms to a rhombohedral structure beyond 5 GPa with a feeble distortion in the lattice. Pressure evolution of unit-cell volume showed a change in compressibility above 5 GPa. The unit-cell parameters of the high-pressure rhombohedral phase at 12.1 GPa are ah = 14.6791(3) Å, ch = 17.9421(5) Å, V = 3348.1(1) Å3. The structure relation between the parent cubic …
An approach combining the Rietveld method and pairs distribution function analysis to study crystalline materials under high pressure or temperature was early proposed by us, and in this study, it was applied to investigate de effect of high pressure on the rhombohedral Bi2Te3 phase. The refined structural parameters obtained from the Rietveld refinement of the XRD patterns measured for pressures up to 9.1 GPa were used as input data to simulate the partial and total structure factors SBiBi, SBiTe, STeTe, and SBi2Te3. Fourier transformation of the Sij factors permitted to obtain the partial an…
Motivated by the observation of two distinct superconducting phases in the moiréless ABC-stacked rhombohedral trilayer graphene, we investigate the electron-acoustic-phonon coupling as a possible pairing mechanism. We predict the existence of superconductivity with the highest $T_c\sim 3$K near the Van Hove singularity. Away from the Van Hove singularity, $T_c$ remains finite in a wide range of doping. In our model, the $s$-wave spin-singlet and $f$-wave spin-triplet pairings yield the same $T_c$, while other pairing states have negligible $T_c$. Our theory provides a simple explanation for th…
The high pressure lattice dynamics of rhombohedral antimony have been studied by a combination of diffuse scattering and inelastic x-ray scattering. The evolution of the phonon behavior as function of pressure was analyzed by means of two theoretical approaches: density functional perturbation theory and symmetry-based phenomenological phase transition analysis. This paper focuses on the first structural phase transition, SbI-SbIV, and the role of vibrations in leading the transition. The phonon dispersion exhibits complex behaviour as one approaches the structural transition, with the branche…
The pressure dependence of the Fermi surface of arsenic is examined using the technique of Wannier interpolation, enabling a dense sampling of the Brillouin zone and the ability to capture fine features within it. Focusing primarily on the A7 to simple-cubic phase transition, we find that this semimetal to metal transition is accompanied by the folding of Fermi surfaces. The pressure dependence of the density of states (DOS) of arsenic indicates that the onset of the Peierls-type cubic to rhombohedral distortion is signified by the appearance of emerging van Hove singularities in the DOS, espe…
We report on our investigation of the crystal structure of arsenic under compression, focusing primarily on the pressure-induced A7 to simple cubic (sc) phase transition. The two-atom rhombohedral unit cell is subjected to pressures ranging from 0 GPa to 200 GPa; for each given pressure, cell lengths and angles, as well as atomic positions, are allowed to vary until the fully relaxed structure is obtained. We find that the nearest and next-nearest neighbor distances give the clearest indication of the occurrence of a structural phase transition. Calculations are performed using the local densi…
The structure of dielectric perovskite BaZrO$_3$, long known to be cubic at room temperature without any structural phase transition with variation of temperature, has been recently disputed to have different ground state structures with lower symmetries involving octahedra rotation. The pressure-dependent Raman scattering measurements can identify the hierarchy of energetically-adjacent polymorphs, helping in turn understand its ground state structure at atmospheric pressure. Here, Raman scattering spectra of high-quality BaZrO$_3$ single crystals grown by the optical floating zone method are…
The pressure-induced transition of vanadium from BCC to rhombohedral structures is unique and intriguing among transition metals. In this work, the stability of these phases is revisited by using density functional theory. At finite temperatures, a novel transition of rhombohedral phases back to BCC phase induced by thermal electrons is discovered. This reentrant transition is found not driven by phonons, instead it is the electronic entropy that stabilizes the latter phase, which is totally out of expectation. Parallel to this transition, we find a peculiar and strong increase of the shear mo…
We present a rationalization of the Raman spectra of orthorhombic and rhombohedral, stoichiometric and doped, manganese perovskites. In particular we study RMnO3 (R= La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er, Y and Ca) and the different phases of Ca or Sr doped RMnO3 compounds as well as cation deficient RMnO3. The spectra of manganites can be understood as combinations of two kinds of spectra corresponding to two structural configurations of MnO6 octahedra and independently of the average structure obtained by diffraction techniques. The main peaks of compounds with regular MnO6 octahedra, as CaMnO3, highly Ca …
We investigate the temperature-pressure phase diagram of BaTiO_3 using a first-principles effective-Hamiltonian approach. We find that the zero-point motion of the ions affects the form of the phase diagram dramatically. Specifically, when the zero-point fluctuations are included in the calculations, all the polar (tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral) phases of BaTiO_3 survive down to 0 K, while only the rhombohedral phase does otherwise. We provide a simple explanation for this behavior. Our results confirm the essential correctness of the phase diagram proposed by Ishidate et al. (Phy…
Phonon spectra of cubic rubidium niobate and rubidium tantalate with the perovskite structure are calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. Based on the analysis of unstable modes in the phonon spectra, the structures of possible distorted phases are determined, their energies are calculated, and it is shown that $R3m$ is the ground-state structure of RbNbO3. In RbTaO3, the ferroelectric instability is suppressed by zero-point lattice vibrations. For ferroelectric phases of RbNbO3, spontaneous polarization, piezoelectric, nonlinear optical, electro-optical, and oth…
A nanometric Sb2Te3 rhombohedral phase was produced from Sb and Te by mechanical alloying for 3 hours and its structural stability was studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy (RS) measurements as a function of pressure. A phase transformation from the ambient pressure rhombohedral phase into a β-Sb2Te3 monoclinic structure between 9.8 and 13.2 GPa is observed by XRD. This phase transformation is confirmed by the Raman spectroscopy measurements. The pressure dependence of the volume fited to a Birch-Murnaghan equation of state gives a bulk modulus B0 = 40.6 +- 1.5 …
We report an investigation of perovskite-type LaNiO3 thin films by Raman scattering in both various scattering configurations and as a function of temperature. The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode assignment provide reference data for phonon calculations and for the use of Raman scattering for structural investigations of LaNiO3, namely the effect of strain in thin films or heterostructures. The temperature-dependent Raman spectra from 80 to 900 K are characterized by the softening of the rotational A1g mode, which suggest a decreasing rhombohedral distortion towar…
We study the structural and vibrational properties of the high-temperature superconducting sulfur trihydride and trideuteride in the high-pressure $Im\bar{3}m$ and $R3m$ phases by first-principles density-functional-theory calculations. On lowering pressure, the rhombohedral transition $Im\bar{3}m \rightarrow R3m$ is expected, with hydrogen bond desymmetrization and occurrence of trigonal lattice distortion. In hydrostatic conditions we find that, contrary to what suggested in some recent experiments, if the rhombohedral distortion exists it affects mainly the hydrogen-bonds, whereas the resul…
We report the first principles investigations on the phonons of three polytypes of BaTiO3 (BTO): paraelectric (PE) cubic Pm-3m and two ferroelectric (FE) phases, tetragonal P4mm and rhombohedral R3m. The phonon frequencies calculated using various exchange-correlation functionals, including density functional theory, Hartree-Fock approximation, and their hybrids were reviewed. The pressure-induced interplays between the modes form individual phases were explored by calculating the phonon modes as a function of pressure, P from -15 to 230 GPa. The pressure-sensitive modes of the FE phases showe…
Melting of rhombohedral boron subnitride B13N2 has been studied in situ at pressures to 8 GPa using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and electrical resistivity measurements. It has been found that above 2.6 GPa B13N2 melts incongruently, and the melting curve exhibits positive slope of 31(3) K/GPa that points to a lower density of the melt as compared to the solid phase.
The role of carbon in the formation of alpha boron at high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) has been investigated by combining HPHT experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Starting from beta rhombohedral or amorphous boron and amorphous carbon at 5 GPa, the alpha boron phase has been repeatedly observed between 1473 K and 2273 K, at temperatures that are much higher than those reported in the phase diagram of boron. The DFT investigation of the effect of carbon insertion into the alpha rhombohedral boron atomic structure on the formation enthalpy, volume and optical p…
We use theory and first-principles calculations to investigate how structural changes induced by ultrafast optical excitation of infrared-active phonons change with hydrostatic pressure in LaAlO$_3$. Our calculations show that the observed structural changes are sensitive to pressure, with the largest changes occurring at pressures near the boundary between the cubic perovskite and rhombohedral phases. We rationalize our findings by defining a figure of merit that depends only on intrinsic materials quantities, and show that the peak response near the phase boundary is dictated by different mi…
Using first-principles calculations, the phonon frequencies at the $Γ$ point and the dielectric tensor are determined and analysed for the cubic and rhombohedral phases of BaTiO$_{3}$. The dipole-dipole interaction is then separated à la Cochran from the remaining short-range forces, in order to investigate their respective influence on lattice dynamics. This analysis highlights the delicate balance of forces leading to an unstable phonon in the cubic phase and demonstrates the extreme sensitivity of this close compensation to minute effective charge changes. Within our decomposition, the stab…
Epitaxial BiFeO3/SrRuO3 superlattices have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on a (001) oriented LaAlO3 substrate and probed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. To investigate the structural competition between rhombohedral BiFeO3 and orthorhombic SrRuO3 the total thickness of all SLs was kept constant and the bilayer thickness (period) Λ was varied. The interlayer strain effects are therefore tuned from large strain effects (short Λ period) to quasi-relaxed structure (large Λ). A complementary investigation using X-ray diffraction and phonon dynamics hints to change from a rhombo…
GeTe is a well-known ferroelectric and thermoelectric material that undergoes a structural phase transition from a rhombohedral to the rocksalt structure at $\sim 600-700$ K. We present a first principles approach to calculate the thermal expansion of GeTe in the rhombohedral phase up to the Curie temperature. We find the minimum of the Helmholtz free energy with respect to each structural parameter in a manner similar to the traditional Gr{ü}neisen theory, and account for the temperature dependence of elastic constants. We obtain the temperature variation of the structural parameters of rhomb…
In piezoelectric ceramics the changes in the phase stabilities versus stress and temperature in the vicinity of the phase boundary play a central role. The present study was dedicated to the classical piezoelectric, lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) ceramic with composition Pb(Zr$_{0.54}$Ti$_{0.46}$)O$_3$ at the Zr-rich side of the morphotropic phase boundary at which both intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to piezoelectricity are significant. The pressure-induced changes in this two-phase (rhombohedral $R3c$+monoclinic $Cm$ at room temperature and $R3c+P4mm$ above 1 GPa pressures) system were …
Recent experiment reports that high thermal conductivity of ~1000 W/mK is observed in cubic boron arsenide crystal (BAs). In order to expand the scope of future applications, we use first-principles calculations to investigate the phonon-limited electronic transport in BAs family and modulation effect of pressure. In the case of electron doping, BAs, AlAs and AlSb exhibit the coupling between high frequency optical phonons and electron as well as the low frequency acoustical phonons in BSb. And BAs has the weakest electron-phonon coupling thus has a high N-type carrier mobility of 1740 cm^2/Vs…
Two boron-rich chalcogenides B12S and B12Se isostructural to α-rhombohedral boron were synthesized by chemical reaction of the elements at high-pressure - high-temperature conditions. The crystal structures and stoichiometries of both compounds were confirmed by Rietveld refinement and elemental analysis. The experimental Raman spectra of B12S and B12Se were investigated for the first time. All observed Raman bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated phonon modes, and the mode assignment has been performed.
The effect of pressure on the zone-center optical phonon modes and the elastic properties of hafnium has been studied by both experimental (Raman scattering) and theoretical (DFT) approaches. It was found an anomaly dependence of the phonon frequency of E$_{2g}$ mode in the pressure range from 0 to 67 GPa. The calculated electronic structure of hafnium shows significant changes under pressure, which have a pronounced spatial anisotropy similar to the anisotropy of the observed phonon properties. The dependencies of the elastic properties on pressure including the components of the elasticity t…
Using ab initio calculations, we show that the hidden influence of selection rules on three-phonon scattering can be exposed through anomalous signatures in the pressure ($P$) and temperature ($T$) dependence of the thermal conductivities, $κ$, of certain compounds. Boron phosphide reveals such underlying behavior through an exceptionally sharp initial rise in $κ$ with increasing $P$, which may be the steepest of any material, and also a peak and decrease in $κ$ at high $P$. These features are in stark contrast to the measured behavior for many solids, and occur at experimentally accessible co…
The IR- and Raman-active phonon frequencies, as well as the elastic constants of orthorhombic GeSe, were calculatedas a function of hydrostatic pressure using the method of density functional in the ABINIT software package. Comparison with the published results of theoretical calculations and experimental data of the pressure dependence of Raman-active phonons has been carried out. Our calculations show that at a pressure of about 29 GPa the crystal structure of GeSe undergoes a continuous transition from simple orthorhombic to base-centered orthorhombic lattice.
It has long been puzzling regarding the atomistic origin of the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening that generally follows a polynomial expression with coefficients needing physical indication. Here we show that an extension of the bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) correlation mechanism to the pressure domain has led to an analytical solution to connect the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening directly to the bonding identities of the specimen and the response of the bonding identities to the applied stimulus. It is found that the pressure-induced blue-shift of Raman phonons arises fr…
The Raman-active phonons in perovskite-like LaMn1-xCoxO3 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 1.0) were studied by measuring Raman spectra at temperatures of 295 and 5 K. The changes in the spectra with Co doping are correlated with the decrease of orthorhombic distortions. Surprisingly more phonon lines than allowed for the rhombohedral LaCoO3 structure were observed in the spectra.
Near-forward Raman scattering combined with ab initio phonon and bond length calculations is used to study the phonon-polariton transverse optical modes (with mixed electrical and mechanical character) of the II-VI ZnSeS mixed crystal under pressure. The goal of the study is to determine the pressure dependence of the poorly resolved percolation-type Zn-S Raman doublet of the three oscillator [1(Zn-Se),2(Zn-S)] ZnSe68S32 mixed crystal, which exhibits a phase transition at approximately the same pressure as its two end compounds (~14 GPa, zincblende-to-rocksalt), as determined by high-pressure …
We have carried out temperature and pressure-dependent Raman and x-ray measurements on single crystals of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. We attribute the observed anomalous temperature dependence of phonons to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlor…
The orthovanadates are useful as host matrices for immobilization of radioactive wastes. The thermodynamic stability of these materials is crucial for their applications in high pressure and temperatures environment. It is necessary to investigate the phonons in the entire Brillouin zone, beyond the zone-centre phonons accessible in previous Raman and infrared experiments. We have carried out extensive neutron inelastic scattering experiments to derive the phonon dispersion relation of YVO4 up to high energy transfer of 65 meV using a single crystal, which are perhaps reported for the first ti…
We report X-ray structural studies of the metal-insulator phase transition in bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, both as a function of temperature and of pressure (931 oC at atmospheric pressure and ca. 45 GPa at ambient temperature). Based on the experimental results, we argue that the metallic gamma-phase is not rhombohedral but is instead the same cubic Pm3m structure whether obtained via high temperature or high pressure, that the MI transition is second order or very nearly so, that this is a band-type transition due to semi-metal band overlap in the cubic phase and not a Mott transition, and that …
Temperature-dependent FAR-infrared reflectivity spectra of partially ordered magnetodielectric La2CoMnO6 is presented, from room temperature up to 675 K. A clear first-ordered structural phase transition (SPT) from a monoclinic structure with P2_1/n symmetry to a rhombohedral phase with R-3 symmetry was evidenced from the behaviour of polar phonon modes at TC~590 K. The temperature dependences of the transversal and longitudinal phonon branches, dielectric strengths, and damping of the strongest dielectric modes confirm the significant contribution of the phonon modes on the SPT, and revealed …
The thermal conductivity of boron arsenide (BAs) is believed to be influenced by phonon scattering selection rules due to its special phonon dispersion. Compression of BAs leads to significant changes in phonon dispersion, which allows for a test of first principles theories for how phonon dispersion affects three- and four-phonon scattering rates. This study reports the thermal conductivity of BAs from 0 to 30 GPa. Thermal conductivity vs. pressure of BAs is measured by time-domain thermoreflectance with a diamond anvil cell. In stark contrast to what is typical for nonmetallic crystals, BAs …
Density functional perturbation theory calculations of alpha-quartz using extended norm conserving pseudopotentials have been used to study the elastic properties and phonon dispersion relations along various high symmetry directions as a function of bulk, uniaxial and non-hydrostatic pressure. The computed equation of state, elastic constants and phonon frequencies are found to be in good agreement with available experimental data. A zone boundary (1/3, 1/3, 0) K-point phonon mode becomes soft for pressures above P=32 GPa. Around the same pressure, studies of the Born stability criteria revea…
The local structure of high pressure BaTiO$_3$ has been interrogated by neutron total scattering methods, up to pressures of 4.18 GPa at ambient temperature. Competitive refinements of cubic, tetragonal and rhombohedral distortion modes against pair distribution functions indicate contrasting local structure behaviour of temperature- and pressure-induced cubic BaTiO$_3$. Suppression of the mode amplitude, isotropy of the order parameter direction and loss of sensitivity to correlated Ti displacements at high pressure all suggest a high-pressure local structure that is more consistent with the …
We report a high-pressure single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction on a LaAlO3 single crystal. The transition from rhombohedral to cubic at 14.8 GPa is confirmed by the loss of the superstructure reflections, whose intensity shows a linear pressure dependence, characteristic of a second-order transition. The crystal remains cubic up to 63 GPa, the highest pressure reached, which provides a confirmation over a very large pressure range of the general rules for the evolution of distortions of perovskites under pressure. We give the parameters of Birch-Murnaghan equations of state in the low-…
We have investigated the phonon, elastic and thermodynamic properties of L1$_{2}$ phase Al$_{3}$Ta by density functional theory approach combining with quasi-harmonic approximation model. The results of phonon band structure shows that L1$_{2}$ phase Al$_{3}$Ta possesses dynamical stability in the pressure range from 0 to 80 GPa due to the absence of imaginary frequencies. The pressure dependences of the elastic constants $C_{ij}$, bulk modulus $B$, shear modulus $G$, Young's modulus $Y$, $B/G$ and Poisson's ratio $ν$ have been analysed. The elastic constants are satisfied with mechanical stab…
We have used ab-initio density functional theory technique to understand the phase transitions and structural changes in various high temperature/pressure phases of LiAlO2. The electronic band structure as well as phonon spectra are calculated for various phases as a function of pressure. The phonon entropy used for the calculations of Gibbs free energy is found to play an important role in the phase stability and phase transitions among various phases. A sudden increase in the polyhedral bond lengths (Li/Al-O) signifies the change from the tetrahedral to octahedral geometry at high-pressure p…
Phonon transport of recently-fabricated $\mathrm{Na_2He}$ at high pressure is investigated from a combination of first-principles calculations and the linearized phonon Boltzmann equation within the single-mode relaxation time approximation (RTA). The calculated room-temperature lattice thermal conductivity is 149.19 $\mathrm{W m^{-1} K^{-1}}$, which is very close to one of Si. It is found that low-frequency optical modes comprise 16\% of the lattice thermal conductivity, while high-frequency optical modes have negligible contribution. The high lattice thermal conductivity is due to large grou…
Beta-PtO2 is a useful transition metal dioxide, but its fundamental thermodynamic and elastic properties remain unexplored. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the structure, phonon, thermodynamic and elastic properties of beta-PtO2. The lattice dynamics and structural stability of beta-PtO2 under pressure were studied using the phonon spectra and vibrational density of states. The vibrational frequencies of the optical modes of beta-PtO2 increase with elevating pressure; this result is comparable with the available experimental data. Then, the heat capacities and th…
We have investigated the behavior of the PbZr(0.94}Ti(0.06)O3 Raman spectra as a function of Hydrostatic pressures. The new structural phases were identified based on previous works performed in PZT system with different Ti concentrations at room- and high pressures. We showed that PbZr(0.94}Ti(0.06}O3 exhibits a rich phase sequence up to 3.7 GPa: rhombohedral(LT) {0.3 GPa} orthorhombic(I) {2.9 GPa} orthorhombic(I'). This sequence is different from that exhibited by PbZr(0.90)Ti(0.10)O3 suggesting a very interesting concentration-pressure phase diagram for rich Zr PZT system.
Dielectric tensor and lattice dynamics of alpha-PbO2-type TiO2 have been investigated using the density functional perturbation theory, with a focus on responses of the vibrational frequencies to pressure. The calculated Raman spectra under different pressures are in good agreement with available experimental results and the symmetry assignments of the Raman peaks of alpha-PbO2-type TiO2 are given for the first time. In addition, we identified two anomalously IR-active soft phonon modes, B1u and B3u, respectively, around 200 cm-1 which have not been observed in high pressure experiments. Compa…
Crystals of tetracene have been studied by means of lattice phonon Raman spectroscopy as a function of temperature and pressure. Two different phases (polymorphs I and II) have been obtained, depending on sample preparation and history. Polymorph I is the most frequently grown phase, stable at ambient conditions. A pressure induced phase transition, observed above 1 GPa, leads to polymorph II, which is also obtained at temperatures below 140 K. Polymorph II can also be maintained at ambient conditions. We have calculated the crystallographic structures and phonon frequencies as a function of t…
The pressure-induced phase transition, elasticity behavior, thermodynamic properties, and $P\mathtt{-}T$ phase diagram of $α$, $ω$, and $β$ equiatomic HfTi alloy are investigated using first-principles density-functional theory (DFT). The simulated pressure-induced phase transition of the alloy follows the sequence of $α\mathtt{\rightarrow}ω\mathtt{\rightarrow}β$, in agreement with the experimental results of Hf and Ti metals. Our calculated elastic constants show that the $α$ and $ω$ phases are mechanically stable at ambient pressure, while the $β$ phase is unstable, where a critical pressure…

Recently discovered magnetic topological insulators $T$Bi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ ($T=$Mn, Fe) crystallize into the $R\bar{3}m$ rhombohedral structure and exhibit the antiferromagnetic order. Here, we discuss the lattice dynamics of these compounds to confirm the stability of these systems. We show that the phonon dispersion does not contain soft modes, so both compounds are dynamically stable in the $R\bar{3}m$ phase. We perform theoretical analyses of the mode activity at $Γ$ point for the discussed compounds. In the case of the Raman active modes, our results are in agreement with the experimentally …
We present temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurments, accompanied byab-initio calculations of phonon spectra and elastic properties as a function of pressure to understand anharmonicity of phonons and to study the mechanism of negative thermal expansion and negative linear compressibility behaviour of ZnAu2(CN)4. The mechanism is identified in terms of specific anharmonic modes that involve bending of the Zn(CN)4-Au- Zn(CN)4 linkage. The high-pressure phase transition at about 2 GPa is also investigated and found to be related to softening of a phonon mode at the L-point a…
We have carried out an extensive phonon study on multiferroic GaFeO3 to elucidate its dynamical behavior. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed over a wide temperature range, 150 to 1198 K. First principles lattice dynamical calculations are done for the sake of the analysis and interpretation of the observations. The comparison of the phonon spectra from magnetic and non-magnetic calculations highlights pronounced differences. The energy range of the vibrational atomistic contributions of the Fe and O ions are found to differ significantly in the two calculation types. There…
The cubic-to-orthorhombic structural transition occurring in CsH at a pressure of about 17 GPa is studied by ab initio calculations. The relative stability of the competing structures and the transition pressure are correctly predicted. We show that this pressure-induced first-order transition is intimately related to a displacive second-order transition which would occur upon application of a shear strain to the (110) planes. The resulting instability is rationalized in terms of the pressure-induced modifications of the electronic structure.
