Results of the first-principles calculations are presented for the group-VB metals V, Nb and Ta up to couple of megabar pressure. An unique structural phase transition sequence BCC-->(at 60 GPa) rhombohedral (angle=110.5 degree)-->(at ~ 160 GPa)rhombohedral(angle=108.5 degree)--> (at ~ 430 GPa) BCC is predicted in V. We also find that BCC-V becomes mechanically and vibrationally unstable at around 112 GPa pressure. Similar transitions are absent in Nb and Ta.
The reversible metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$ at $T_\text{C} \approx 340$ K has been closely scrutinized yet its thermodynamic origin remains ambiguous. We discuss the origin of the transition entropy by calculating the electron and phonon contributions at $T_\text{C}$ using density functional theory. The vibration frequencies are obtained from harmonic phonon calculations, with the soft modes that are imaginary at zero temperature renormalized to real values at $T_\text{C}$ using experimental information from diffuse x-ray scattering at high-symmetry wavevectors. Gaussian Process Regres…
Paramagnetic molecules can show long spin-coherence times, which make them good candidates as quantum bits. Reducing the efficiency of the spin-phonon interaction is the primary challenge towards achieving long coherence times over a wide temperature range in soft molecular lattices. The lack of a microscopic understanding about the role of vibrations in spin relaxation strongly undermines the possibility to chemically design better performing molecular qubits. Here we report a first-principles characterization of the main mechanism contributing to the spin-phonon coupling for a class of vanad…
Molecular electronic spins represent one of the most promising building blocks for the design of quantum computing architectures. However, the advancement of this technology requires the increase of spin lifetime at ambient temperature. Spin-phonon coupling has been recognized as the key interaction dictating spin relaxation at high temperature in molecular crystals and the search for chemical-design principles to control such interaction are a fundamental challenge in the field. Here we present a multi-reference first-principles analysis of the g-tensor and the spin-phonon coupling in a serie…
The pressure-induced transition of vanadium from BCC to rhombohedral structures is unique and intriguing among transition metals. In this work, the stability of these phases is revisited by using density functional theory. At finite temperatures, a novel transition of rhombohedral phases back to BCC phase induced by thermal electrons is discovered. This reentrant transition is found not driven by phonons, instead it is the electronic entropy that stabilizes the latter phase, which is totally out of expectation. Parallel to this transition, we find a peculiar and strong increase of the shear mo…
Vanadium dioxide (VO$_{2}$) undergoes a first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) upon cooling near room temperature, concomitant with structural change from rutile to monoclinic. Accurate characterization of lattice vibrations is vital for elucidating the transition mechanism. To investigate the lattice dynamics and thermal transport properties of VO$_{2}$ across the MIT, we present a phonon renormalization scheme based on self-consistent phonon theory through iteratively refining vibrational free energy. Using this technique, we compute temperature-dependent phonon dispersion and lifetime…
The binary compound SnSe exhibits record high thermoelectric performance, largely because of its very low thermal conductivity. The origin of the strong phonon anharmonicity leading to the low thermal conductivity of SnSe is investigated through first-principles calculations of the electronic structure and phonons. It is shown that a Jahn-Teller instability of the electronic structure is responsible for the high-temperature lattice distortion between the Cmcm and Pnma phases. The coupling of phonon modes and the phase transition mechanism are elucidated, emphasizing the connection with hybrid …
The recently discovered family of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A: K, Rb Cs) kagome metals possess a unique combination of nontrivial band topology, superconducting ground states, and signatures of electron correlations manifest via competing charge density wave order. Little is understood regarding the nature of the charge density wave (CDW) instability inherent to these compounds and the potential correlation with the accompanying onset of a large anomalous Hall response. To understand the impact of the CDW order on the electronic structure in these systems, we present quantum oscillation measurements on si…
Unstable zone-boundary phonon modes drive atomic displacements linked to a rich array of properties. Yet, the electronic origin of the instability remains to be clearly explained. Here, we propose that bonding interaction between Bloch states belonging to different wavevectors leads to such instability via the pseudo- or second-order Jahn--Teller effect. Our first-principles calculations and representation theory-based analyses show that rotations of anion coordinated octahedra, an archetypal example of zone-boundary phonon condensations, are induced by this bonding mechanism. The proposed mec…
Quest for new states of matter near an ordered phase is a promising route for making modern physics forward. By probing thermal properties of a ferroelectric (FE) crystal Ba1-xSrxAl2O4, we have clarified that low-energy excitation of acoustic phonons is remarkably enhanced with critical behavior at the border of the FE phase. The phonon spectrum is significantly damped toward the FE phase boundary and transforms into glasslike phonon excitation which is reminiscent of a boson peak. This system thus links long-standing issues of amorphous solids and structural instability in crystals to pave th…

Density-functional calculations of the electronic structure and lattice dynamics of superconducting LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$: Evidence for an electron-phonon interaction near the charge-density-wave instability
Understanding the interplay between various design strategies (for instance, bonding heterogeneity and lone pair induced anharmonicity) to achieve ultralow lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_l$) is indispensable for discovering novel functional materials for thermal energy applications. In the present study, we investigate layered PbXF (X = Cl, Br, I), which offers bonding heterogeneity through the layered crystal structure, anharmonicity through the Pb$^{2+}$ $6s^2$ lone pair, and phonon softening through the mass difference between F and Pb/X. The weak inter-layer van der Waals bonding and the…
Employing the density-functional theory with local density approximation, we show that the fully hydrogenated monolayer-hexagonal boron nitride (H$_2$BN) has a direct-band gap of 2.96 eV in the blue-light region while the pristine $\textit{h}$-BN has a wider indirect-band gap of 4.78 eV. The hole-doped H$_2$BN is stable at low carrier density ($n$) but becomes dynamically unstable at higher $n$. We predict that it is a phonon-mediated superconductor with a transition temperature ($T_c$) which can reach $\sim$31 K at $n$ of $1.5\times$ $10^{14}$ holes cm$^{-2}$ near the lattice instability. The…
We investigate the controversial case of charge-density-wave (CDW) order in single layer 1T-TiSe$_2$ by employing the density functional perturbation theory with on-site Hubbard interactions. The results emphasize the crucial role of electron correlations via Hubbard corrections in order to capture the accurate electronic structure, low- and high-temperature limits of the CDW phonon mode, and temperature-charge phase diagram. We show, in close agreement with the experiments, that total phase diagram consists of both commensurate and incommensurate CDW regions, where the latter coincide with th…

Very recently, two-dimensional(2D) boron sheets (borophene) with rectangular structure has been grown successfully on single crystal Ag(111) substrates. The fabricated boroprene is predicted to have unusual mechanical properties. We performed first-principle calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of the monolayer borophene, including ideal tensile strength and critical strain. It was found that monolayer borophene can withstand stress up to 20.26 N/m and 12.98 N/m in a and b directions, respectively. However, its critical strain was found to be small. In a direction, the critical …
The representative cuprate, La$_{2-x}$M$_x$CuO$_4$, with M = Sr and $x = 1/8$ is studied via first-principles calculations in the high-temperature tetragonal (HTT), low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO), and low-temperature less-orthorhombic (LTLO) structures. By suppressing the magnetism and superconductivity, the LTLO phase, which has rarely been observed in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, is found to be the ground state, where the structural phase transitions, HTT$\rightarrow$LTO$\rightarrow$LTLO, can be understood via phonon instability. While the La-O composition is identified to be responsible for…
Recently, both charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity have been observed in Kagome compounds $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$. However, the nature of CDW that results in many novel charge modulations is still under hot debate. By means of the first-principles calculations, we discover two kinds of CDW states, the trimerized and hexamerized 2$\times$2 phase and dimerized 4$\times$1 phase existing in $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$. Our phonon excitation spectrum and electronic Lindhard function calculations reveal that the most intensive structural instability in $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ originates from a combined in-plane vibrat…
Structural instability and the Mott-Peierls transition in a half-metallic hollandite : K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$
Alkaline-earth metal oxides, in particular MgO and CaO dominate Earths lower mantle, therefore, exploring high pressure behavior of this class of compounds is of significant geophysical research interest. Among all these compounds, BaO exhibits rich polymorphism in the pressure range of 0-1.5 Mbar. Static enthalpy calculations revealed that BaO undergoes a pressure induced structural phase transition from NaCl-type (B1) $\rightarrow$ NiAs-type (B8) $\rightarrow$ distorted CsCl-type (d-B2) $\rightarrow$ CsCl-type (B2) at 5.1, 19.5, 120 GPa respectively. B1 $\rightarrow$ B8 $\&$ B8 $\rightarrow$…
The interplay between superconductivity and charge density waves (CDWs) under hole doping in cuprates is one of the central phenomena in condensed matter physics. Recently, CDWs are also observed in CaCuO$_2$-analogous nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R = La, Nd) but exhibit fundamentally different hole-doping-dependent behaviors compared to that in cuprates, raising a challenging question on its origin. In this article, we propose that electronic instability (EI) and moment-dependent electron-phonon coupling (MEPC), mainly contributed by Ni 3dx2-y2 and R 5dz2, respectively, may be the possible reasons fo…

The nature of the charge density wave phases in the kagome metal compound AV$_3$Sb$_5$ has raised many questions and their origin is still under debate. Here, we combine diffuse scattering (DS) and inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) to identify a 3-dimensional (3D) precursor of the charge order with propagation vector (0.5 0 0.5), which condenses into a 3D-CDW through a first order phase transition. The quasi-elastic critical scattering indicates that the dominant contribution to the diffuse precursor is the elastic central peak without phonon softening. However, the inelastic spectra show a sma…
We present a minimal theory of superconductivity enhancement in ferroelectric-type materials. Simple expressions for the optical mode responsible for the soft mode transition are assumed. A key role is played by the anharmonic phonon damping which is modulated by an external control parameter (electron doping or mechanical strain) causing the appearance of the soft mode. It is shown that the enhancement in the superconducting critical temperature $T_{c}$ upon approaching the ferroelectric transition from either side is due to the Stokes electron-phonon scattering processes promoted by strong p…
We found that a high mobility semimetal 1T'-MoTe2 shows a significant pressure-dependent change in the cryogenic thermopower in the vicinity of the critical pressure, where the polar structural transition disappears. With the application of a high pressure of 0.75 GPa, while the resistivity becomes as low as 10 μΩcm, thermopower reached the maximum value of 60 μVK-1 at 25 K, leading to a giant thermoelectric power factor of 300 μWK-2cm-1. Based on semiquantitative analyses, the origin of this behavior is discussed in terms of inelastic electron-phonon scattering enhanced by the softening of zo…
