The origin of ferromagnetic insulating state of La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$ is investigated. Based on the tight-binding model, it is shown that this state can be attributed to the Peierls instability arisen from the interplay of spin and orbital ordering. The importance of the hole-orbiton-phonon intercoupling in doped manganites is revealed. This picture explains well the recent experimental finding of the reentrance of ferromagnetic metal state at low temperature [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 097201 (2006)].
On the basis of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we derive the underlying microscopic model Hamiltonian for TiOCl, a unique system that shows two consecutive phase transitions from a Mott insulator to a spin-Peierls insulator through a structurally incommensurate phase. We show with our model that the presence of magnetic frustration in TiOCl leads to a competition with the spin-Peierls distortion, which results in the novel incommensurate phase. In addition, our calculations indicate that the spin-Peierls state is triggered by adiabatic phonons, which is essential for u…
The electronic structure of VO$_2$ is studied in the frameworks of local density approximation (LDA) and LDA+$U$ to give a quantitative description of the metal-insulator (MI) transition in this system. It is found that, both structural distortion and the local Coulomb interaction, play important roles in the transition. An optical gap, comparable to the experimental value has been obtained in the monoclinic structure by using the LDA+$U$ method. Based on our results, we believe that both, the Peierls and the Mott-Hubbard mechanism, are essential for a description of the MI transition in this …
Vanadium dioxide undergoes a first order metal-insulator transition at 340 K. In this work, we develop and carry out state of the art linear scaling DFT calculations refined with non-local dynamical mean-field theory. We identify a complex mechanism, a Peierls-assisted orbital selection Mott instability, which is responsible for the insulating M$_1$ phase, and furthermore survives a moderate degree of disorder.
We study the effects of opening of the band gap on the double exchange ferromagnetism. Applying the density-matrix renormalization group method and an analytical expansion from the dimer limit to the one-dimensional double exchange model, we demonstrate for a relevant region of the exchange coupling that, in the weak dimerization regime, the Peierls gap opens in the fully spin-polarized conduction band without affecting its ferromagnetism, whereas in the strong dimerization regime, the ferromagnetism is destroyed and the Mott gap opens instead, leading the system to the antiferromagnetic quasi…
Using the density-functional-theory based electronic structure calculations, we study the electronic state of recently discovered mixed-valent manganese oxides $A$Mg$_4$Mn$_6$O$_{15}$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs), which are fully spin-polarized ferromagnetic insulators with a cubic crystal structure. We show that the system may be described as a three-dimensional arrangement of the one-dimensional chains of a $2p$ orbital of O and a $3d$ orbital of Mn running along the three axes of the cubic lattice. We thereby argue that in the ground state the chains are fully spin polarized due to the double-exchange …
Ultrafast dynamics across the photoinduced three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal (IM) transition in CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ was investigated by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. The structural coherence of the low-$T$ broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshold excitation fluence of $F_{\mathrm{c}}\approx3$ mJ/cm$^{2}$ (at 1.55-eV photon energy) resulting in a structurally inhomogeneous transient state which persists for several-tens of picoseconds before reverting to the original low-$T$ state. The el…
The spinel-structure CuIr$_{2}$S$_{4}$ compound displays a rather unusual orbitally-driven three-dimensional Peierls-like insulator-metal transition. The low-T symmetry-broken insulating state is especially interesting due to the existence of a metastable irradiation-induced disordered weakly conducting state. Here we study intense femtosecond optical pulse irradiation effects by means of the all-optical ultrafast multi-pulse time-resolved spectroscopy. We show that the structural coherence of the low-T broken symmetry state is strongly suppressed on a sub-picosecond timescale above a threshol…
We report first-principles calculations on antiferromagnetic spin ordering in graphene under biaxial strain. Using hybrid functional calculations, we found that semimetallic graphene sheets undergo a transition to antiferromagnetic insulators at a biaxial strain of 7.7% and that the band gap rapidly increases after the onset of this transition before reaching 0.9 eV at a biaxial strain of 12%. We examined the competition of the antiferromagnetic spin ordering with two-dimensional Peierls distortions upon biaxial strain, and found that the preceding antiferromagnetic insulator phase impedes the…
In order to explore the driving mechanism of the concomitant metal-insulator and structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional hollandite K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$, electronic structures and phonon properties are investigated by employing the {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found that the imaginary phonon frequency reflecting the structural instability appears only in the DFT+$U$ ($U$: Coulomb correlation) calculation, which indicates that the Coulomb correlation plays an essential role in the structural transition. The lattice displacements of the softene…
Using first-principles calculations of graphene having high-symmetry distortion or defects, we investigate band gap opening by chiral symmetry breaking, or intervalley mixing, in graphene and show an intuitive picture of understanding the gap opening in terms of local bonding and antibonding hybridizations. We identify that the gap opening by chiral symmetry breaking in honeycomb lattices is an ideal two-dimensional (2D) extension of the Peierls metal-insulator transition in 1D linear lattices. We show that the spontaneous Kekule distortion, a 2D version of the Peierls distortion, takes place …
We report room temperature electrical detection of spin injection from a ferromagnetic insulator (YIG) into a ferromagnetic metal (Permalloy, Py). Non-equilibrium spins with both static and precessional spin polarizations are dynamically generated by the ferromagnetic resonance of YIG magnetization, and electrically detected by Py as dc and ac spin currents, respectively. The dc spin current is electrically detected via the inverse spin Hall effect of Py, while the ac spin current is converted to a dc voltage via the spin rectification effect of Py which is resonantly enhanced by dynamic excha…
Realizing axion insulator state with a uniform magnetization considerably facilitates experimental explorations of the intriguing topological magnetoelectric effect, a hallmark of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs). Through density functional theory calculations and four-band model studies, we find that magnetic ions Cr3+ in monolayer CrI3 and Mn2+ in septuple-layer MnBi2Se4 have opposite exchange couplings to the topological surface states of 3D TI Bi2Se3. As an exciting result of such opposite exchange couplings, axion insulator state is realized by a uniform magnetization i…
First-principles calculations for carbyne under strain predict that the Peierls transition from symmetric cumulene to broken-symmetry polyyne structure is enhanced as the material is stretched. Interpretation within a simple and instructive analytical model suggests that this behavior is valid for arbitrary 1D metals. Further, numerical calculations of the anharmonic quantum vibrational structure of carbyne show that zero-point atomic vibrations alone eliminate the Peierls distortion in a mechanically free chain, preserving the cumulene symmetry. The emergence and increase of Peierls dimerizat…
We have studied the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in the layered ferromagnetic insulators CrSiTe$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$ covered by Pt films in the measurement configuration where spin current traverses the ferromagnetic Cr layers. The LSSE response is clearly observed in the ferromagnetic phase and, in contrast to a standard LSSE magnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, persists above the critical temperatures in both CrSiTe$_3$/Pt and CrGeTe$_3$/Pt samples. With the help of a numerical calculation, we attribute the LSSE signals observed in the paramagnetic regime to exchange-dominated interlayer tra…
We investigate the bias-induced insulator-metal transition in organic electronics devices, on the basis of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. The insulator-metal transition is explained with the energy levels crossover that eliminates the Peierls phase and delocalizes the electron states near the threshold voltage. This may account for the experimental observations on the devices that exhibit intrinsic bistable conductance switching with large on-off ratio.
We consider the superstructures, which can be formed in spinels containing on B-sites the transition-metal ions with partially filled t2g levels. We show that, when such systems are close to itinerant state (e.g. have an insulator-metal transition), there may appear in them an orbitally-driven Peierls state. We explain by this mechanism the very unusual superstructures observed in CuIr2S4 (octamers) and MgTi2O4 (chiral superstructures) and suggest that similar phenomenon should be observed in NaTiO2 and possibly in some other systems.
At hole concentrations below x=0.4, Ba_(1-x)K_xBiO_3 is non-metallic. At x=0, pure BaBiO3 is a Peierls insulator. Very dilute holes create bipolaronic point defects in the Peierls order parameter. Here we find that the Rice-Sneddon version of Peierls theory predicts that more concentrated holes should form stacking faults (two-dimensional topological defects, called slices) in the Peierls order parameter. However, the long-range Coulomb interaction, left out of the Rice-Sneddon model, destabilizes slices in favor of point bipolarons at low concentrations, leaving a window near 30% doping where…
For a nitrogen dimer in insulating MgO, a ferromagnetic coupling between spin-polarized $2p$-holes is revealed by calculations based on the density functional theory amended by an on-site Coulomb interaction and corroborated by the Hubbard model. It is shown that the ferromagnetic coupling is facilitated by a T-shaped orbital arrangement of the $2p$-holes, which is in its turn controlled by an intersite Coulomb interaction due to the directionality of the $p$-orbitals. We thus conjecture that this interaction is an important ingredient of ferromagnetism in band insulators with $2p$ dopants.
Cr2Ge2Te6 has been of interest for decades, as it is one of only a few ferromagnetic insulators. Recently, this material has been revisited due to its potential as a substrate for Bi2Te3, a topological insulator. This enables the possibility of studying the anomalous quantum Hall effect in topological insulators, and a route to novel spintronic devices. To probe the compatibility of these two materials, we use polarized variable temperature Raman microscopy to study Bi2Te3-Cr2Ge2Te6 heterostructure as well as the phonon dynamics of Cr2Ge2Te6. We found the temperature dependence of the Cr2Ge2Te…
We perform density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations extensively on one dimensional Mott and Peierls chains with explicit inclusion of the static bias to study the insulator-metal transition in those systems. We find that the electric field induces a number of insulator-metal transitions for finite size systems and at the thermodynamic limit, the insulating system breaks down into a completely conducting state at a critical value of bias which depends strongly on the insulating parameters. Our results indicate that the breakdown, in both the Peierls and Mott insulators, at therm…
By means of relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations we study electron band structure of the topological insulator (TI) Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films deposited on the ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) EuS substrate. In the Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuS heterostructure, the gap opened in the spectrum of the topological state has a hybridization character and is shown to be controlled by the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ film thickness, while magnetic contribution to the gap is negligibly small. We also analyzed the effect of Eu doping on the magnetization of the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ film and demonstrated that the Eu impurity…
Movements of individual domain walls in a ferromagnetic garnet were studied with angstrom resolution. The measurements reveal that domain walls can be locked between adjacent crystallographic planes and propagate by distinct steps matching the lattice periodicity. Domain walls are found to be weakly mobile within valleys of the atomic washboard but become unexpectedly flexible on Peierls ridges, where they can be kept in a bi-stable state by ac magnetic field. We describe the latter observation in terms of a single magnetic kink propagating along a domain wall.
Diluted ferromagnetic III-V semiconductors typically show a high degree of compensation. Compensation is connected to the presence of comparable densities of charged defects of either sign. This naturally leads to the development of strong correlations between defect positions during growth and annealing. We show that these correlations are required to understand the experimentally observed transport and magnetic properties as well as the persistence of the energy gap upon doping with magnetic ions.
The realization of long range and insulating ferromagnetic states in topological insulator (TI) has been a pressing issue since its discovery. Only recently, such state was achieved in Cr-doped Bi2-xSbxTe3, leading to the discovery of quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). However, the effect is only observed at extremely low temperatures mainly due to the limited magnetism. To fully understand the mechanism of the ferromagnetic ordering whereby improving the ferromagnetism, we investigated 4f transition metal-doped Bi2Se3, using density-functional-theory approaches. We found that Eu and Sm pre…
The metal-insulator transition observed in the In/Si(111)-4x1 reconstruction is studied by means of ab initio calculations of a simplified model of the surface. Different surface bands are identified and classified according to their origin and their response to several structural distortions. We support the, recently proposed [New J. of Phys. 7 (2005) 100], combination of a shear and a Peierls distortions as the origin of the metal-insulator transition. Our results also seem to favor an electronic driving force for the transition.
Ability to tailor the nature of the magnetic coupling between two ferromagnetic electrodes can enable the realization of new spintronics device systems. This paper discusses our finding that deposition of an ultrathin tantalum (Ta) on the NiFe top electrode reversed the nature of inter-ferromagnetic electrode coupling. We observed that the deposition of ~ 5 nm Ta on the top of a magnetic tunnel junction with Ta( 2 nm)/Co(5 nm)/NiFe (5 nm)/AlOx( 2 nm)/NiFe (10-15 nm) configuration changed the magnetic coupling between two ferromagnetic electrodes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. We inve…
We have succeeded in growing ferromagnetic metals (Co, Fe, and NiFe)/ Al2O3/ AlGaAs heterostructures with homogeneous and flat interfaces. The electro-luminescence (EL) from the light emitting diode (LED) consisting of the metal/insulator/semiconductor (MIS) structure depends on the magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic electrode at room temperature. This fact shows that a spin-injection from the ferromagnetic metal to the semiconductor is achieved. The spin-injection efficiency is estimated to be the order of 1 % at room temperature.
The experimental observation of quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in magnetic topological insulators has stimulated enormous interest in condensed-matter physics and materials science. For the purpose of realizing high-temperature QAHE, several material candidates have been proposed, among which the interface states in the CdO/ferromagnetic insulator heterostructures are particularly interesting and favorable for technological applications. Here, we report the experimental observation of the interfacial ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall effect in the Fe3O4/CdO/Fe3O4 heterostructures grown v…
We report a proximity-driven large anomalous Hall effect in all-telluride heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6 and topological insulator (Bi,Sb)2Te3. Despite small magnetization in the (Bi,Sb)2Te3 layer, the anomalous Hall conductivity reaches a large value of 0.2e2/h in accord with a ferromagnetic response of the Cr2Ge2Te6. The results show that the exchange coupling between the surface state of the topological insulator and the proximitized Cr2Ge2Te6 layer is effective and strong enough to open the sizable exchange gap in the surface state.
It is shown that, contrary to the naive expectation, single particle spectral gaps can be opened on the surface states of three dimensional topological insulators by using commensurate out- and in-plane antiferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic insulating thin films.
Magnetic proximity effect between topological insulator (TI) and ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) is considered to have great potential in spintronics. However, a complete determination of interfacial magnetic structure has been highly challenging. We theoretically investigate the interlayer exchange coupling of two FMIs separated by a TI thin film, and show that the particular electronic states of the TI contributing to the proximity effect can be directly identified through the coupling behavior between two FMIs, together with a tunability of coupling constant. Such FMI/TI/FMI structure not onl…
Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic insulator, has attracted a great deal of interest recently owing to its potential for integration with Dirac materials to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and to develop novel spintronics devices. Here, we study the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of single-crystalline CGT and determine that the magnetic easy axis is directed along the c-axis in its ferromagnetic phase. In addition, CGT is an insulator below the Curie temperature. These properties make CGT a potentially promising candidate substrate for integration with topological i…
In a semiconductor hererostructure, the Coulomb interaction is responsible for the electric current drag between two 2D electron gases across an electron impenetrable insulator. For two metallic layers separated by a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) layer, the electric current drag can be mediated by a nonequilibrium magnon current of the FI. We determine the drag current by using the semiclassical Boltzmann approach with proper boundary conditions of electrons and magnons at the metal-FI interface.
We do a search for topological insulators which are associated with ferromagnetic ordering and show anomalous quantum Hall effect, among transition metal oxide superlattices taking the parent compounds as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Among the various superlattices which are studied here, (LaAlO3)10/(LaOsO3)2 exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state with a topologically non-trivial energy gap when a spin-orbit interaction is turned on. The study of transverse conductivity shows that the system has quantized Hall conductivity inside the topological energy gap without applying any external magnetic field. Th…
Through ${in~situ}$ photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the change in the electronic and crystal structures of dimensionality-controlled VO$_2$ films coherently grown on TiO$_2$(001) substrates. In the nanostructured films, the balance between the instabilities of a bandlike Peierls transition and a Mott transition is controlled as a function of thickness. The characteristic spectral change associated with temperature-driven metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$ thick films holds down to 1.5 nm (roughly corresponding to five V atoms along the [001] direction), whereas VO$_2$ films of le…
The effect of disorder on transport and magnetization in ferromagnetic III-V semiconductors, in particular (Ga,Mn)As, is studied theoretically. We show that Coulomb-induced correlations of the defect positions are crucial for the transport and magnetic properties of these highly compensated materials. We employ Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the correlated defect distributions. Exact diagonalization gives reasonable results for the spectrum of valence-band holes and the metal-insulator transition only for correlated disorder. Finally, we show that the mean-field magnetization also depends c…

We theoretically study the magnetic proximity effect in the three dimensional (3D) topological insulator/ferromagnetic insulator (TI/FMI) structures in the context of possibility to manage the Dirac helical state in TI. Within continual approach based on the $\mathbf{kp}$ Hamiltonian we predict that, when 3D TI is brought into contact with 3D FMI, the ordinary bound state arising at the TI/FMI interface becomes spin polarized due to the orbital mixing at the boundary. Whereas the wave function of FMI decays into the TI bulk on the atomic scale, the induced exchange field, which is proportional…
Magnetic insulators are often antiferromagnetic (AFM) and layered AFM compounds usually show low ordering temperature. On the other hand, layered ferromagnetic (FM) insulators with high-TC are very rare although they could be quite useful for spintronic applications. Here, using crystal field level analysis in combination with density functional theory calculations as well as Monte Carlo simulations, we predict that the layered insulator Sr2NiRuO4 would have a strong FM coupling with TC as high as 240 K. The tetragonal crystal field in the Ni-O-Ru square plane stabilizes the S=1/2 Ni+ and S=3/…
We argue that in lightly hole doped perovskite-type Mn oxides the holes (Mn$^{4+}$ sites) are surrounded by nearest neighbor Mn$^{3+}$ sites in which the occupied $3d$ orbitals have their lobes directed towards the central hole (Mn$^{4+}$) site and with spins coupled ferromagnetically to the central spin. This composite object, which can be viewed as a combined orbital-spin-lattice polaron, is accompanied by the breathing type (Mn$^{4+}$) and Jahn-Teller type (Mn$^{3+}$) local lattice distortions. We present calculations which indicate that for certain doping levels these orbital polarons may …
We study \textit{ab initio} a pyrochlore compound, CsW$_{2}$O$_{6}$, which exhibits a yet unexplained metal-insulator transition. We find that (1) the reported low-$T$ structure is likely inaccurate and the correct structure has a twice larger cell; (2) the insulating phase is not of a Mott or dimer-singlet nature, but a rare example of a 3D Peierls transition, with a simultaneous condensation of three density waves; (3) spin-orbit interaction plays a crucial role, forming well-nested bands. The high-$T$ (HT) phase, if stabilized, could harbor a unique $e_{g}+ie_{g}$ superconducting state that…
We present the results of the magnetic and specific heat measurements on V4 tetrahedral-cluster compound GaV4S8 between 2 to 300K. We find two transitions related to a structural change at 42K followed by ferromagnetic order at 12K on cooling. Remarkably similar properties were previously reported for the cluster compounds of Mo4. These compounds show an extremely high density of low energy excitations in their electronic properties. We explain this behavior in a cluster compound as due to the reduction of coulomb repulsion among electrons that occupy highly degenerate orbits of different clus…
Tunneling surface current through a thin ferromagnetic barrier in a three-dimensional topological insulator is shown to possess an extraordinary response to the orientation of barrier magnetization. In contrast to conventional magnetoresistance devices that are sensitive to the relative alignment of two magnetic layers, a drastic change in the transmission current is achieved by a single layer when its magnetization rotates by 90 degrees. Numerical estimations predict a giant magnetoresistance as large as 800 % at room temperature and the proximate exchange interaction of 40 meV in the barrier…
The recent discovery of magnetism in atomically thin layers of van der Waals crystals has created great opportunities for exploring light-matter interactions and magneto-optical phenomena in the two-dimensional limit. Optical and magneto-optical experiments have provided insights into these topics, revealing strong magnetic circular dichroism and giant Kerr signals in atomically thin ferromagnetic insulators. However, the nature of the giant magneto-optical responses and their microscopic mechanism remain unclear. Here, by performing first-principles GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations…
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) hosts the dissipationless chiral edge states associated with the nonzero Chern number, providing potentially significant applications in future spintronics. The QAHE usually occurs in a two-dimensional (2D) system with time-reversal symmetry breaking. In this work, we propose that the QAHE can exist in three-dimensional (3D) ferromagnetic insulators. By imposing inversion symmetry, we develop the topological constraints dictating the appearance of 3D QAHE based on the parity analysis at the time-reversal invariant points in reciprocal space. Moreover, u…
The topological Haldane model (THM) on a honeycomb lattice is a prototype of systems hosting topological phases of matter without external fields. It is the simplest model exhibiting the quantum Hall effect without Landau levels, which motivated theoretical and experimental explorations of topological insulators and superconductors. Despite its simplicity, its realization in condensed matter systems has been elusive due to a seemingly difficult condition of spinless fermions with sublattice-dependent magnetic flux terms. While there have been theoretical proposals including elaborate atomic-sc…
We present a theory for resonance-tunneling magnetoresistance (MR) in Ferromagnetic-Insulator-Nonmagnetic junctions. The theory sheds light on many of the recent electrical spin injection experiments, suggesting that this MR effect rather than spin accumulation in the nonmagnetic channel corresponds to the electrically detected signal. We quantify the dependence of the tunnel current on the magnetic field by quantum rate equations derived from the Anderson impurity model, with important addition of impurity spin interactions. Considering the on-site Coulomb correlation, the MR effect is caused…
The Dirac electrons occupying the surface states (SSs) of topological insulators (TIs) have been predicted to exhibit many exciting magneto-transport phenomena. Here we report on the first experimental observation of an unconventional planar Hall effect (PHE) and an electrically gate-tunable hysteretic planar magnetoresistance (PMR) in EuS/TI heterostructures, in which EuS is a ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) with an in-plane magnetization. In such exchange-coupled FMI/TI heterostructures, we find a significant (suppressed) PHE when the in-plane magnetic field is parallel (perpendicular) to the …
Topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a hallmark response of the topological field theory, which provides a paradigm shift in the study of emergent topological phenomena. However, its direct observation is yet to be realized due to the demanding magnetic configuration required to gap all the surface states. Here, we theoretically propose that the axion insulators with a simple ferromagnetic configuration, such as MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n family, provide an ideal playground to realize TME. In a designed triangular prism geometry, all the surface states are magnetically gapped. Under a vertical …
We formulate a linear response theory of the spin Seebeck effect, i.e., a spin voltage generation from heat current flowing in a ferromagnet. Our approach focuses on the collective magnetic excitation of spins, i.e., magnons. We show that the linear-response formulation provides us with a qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of the spin Seebeck effect observed in a prototypical magnet, yttrium iron garnet.
How to control collectively ordered electronic states is a core interest of condensed matter physics. We report an electric field controlled reversible transition from superconductor to ferromagnetic insulator in (Li,Fe)OHFeSe thin flake using solid ion conductor as the gate dielectric. By driving Li ions into and out of the (Li,Fe)OHFeSe thin flake with electric field, we obtained a dome-shaped superconducting region with optimal Tc ~ 43 K, which is separated by a quantum critical point from ferromagnetically insulating phase. The ferromagnetism arises from the long range order of the interst…
The results of first principles electronic structure calculations for the metallic rutile and the insulating monoclinic M1 phase of vanadium dioxide are presented. In addition, the insulating M2 phase is investigated for the first time. The density functional calculations allow for a consistent understanding of all three phases. In the rutile phase metallic conductivity is carried by metal t_2g orbitals, which fall into the one-dimensional d_parallel band, and the isotropically dispersing e_g^pi bands. Hybridization of both types of bands is weak. In the M1 phase splitting of the d_parallel ba…
The spin-Seebeck effect refers to voltage signals induced in metals by thermally driven spin currents in adjacent magnetic systems. We present a theory of the spin-Seebeck signal in the case where the conductor that supports the voltage signal is the topologically protected two-dimensional surface-state system at the interface between a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) and a topological insulator (TI). Our theory uses a Dirac model for the TI surface-states and assumes Heisenberg exchange coupling between the TI quasiparticles and the FI magnetization. The spin-Seebeck voltage is induced by the TI…
Hybrid semiconductor-ferromagnetic insulator heterostructures are interesting due to their tunable electronic transport, self-sustained stray field and local proximitized magnetic exchange. In this work, we present lattice matched hybrid epitaxy of semiconductor - ferromagnetic insulator InAs/EuS heterostructures and analyze the atomic-scale structure as well as their electronic and magnetic characteristics. The Fermi level at the InAs/EuS interface is found to be close to the InAs conduction band and in the bandgap of EuS, thus preserving the semiconducting properties. Both neutron and X-ray …
The superexchange theory predicts dominant antiferromagnetic kinetic interaction when the orbitals accommodating magnetic electrons are covalently bonded through diamagnetic bridging atoms/groups. Here we show that explicit consideration of magnetic and (leading) bridging orbitals, together with the electron transfer between the former, reveals a strong ferromagnetic kinetic exchange contribution. First principle calculations show that it is comparable in strength with antiferromagnetic superexchange in a number of magnetic materials with diamagnetic metal bridges. In particular, it is respons…
