We consider here special Poisson brackets given by the "averaging" of local multi-dimensional Poisson brackets in the Whitham method. For the brackets of this kind it is natural to ask about their canonical forms, which can be obtained after transformations preserving the "physical meaning" of the field variables. We show here that the averaged bracket can always be written in the canonical form after a transformation of "Hydrodynamic Type" in the case of absence of annihilators of initial bracket. However, in general case the situation is more complicated. As we show here, in more general case the averaged bracket can be transformed to a "pseudo-canonical" form under some special ("physical") requirements on the initial bracket.
Poisson brackets between conserved quantities are a fundamental tool in the theory of integrable systems. The subclass of weakly nonlocal Poisson brackets occurs in many significant integrable systems. Proving that a weakly nonlocal differential operator defines a Poisson bracket can be challenging. We propose a computational approach to this problem through the identification of such operators with superfunctions on supermanifolds.
We compare three different ways of checking the Jacobi identity for weakly nonlocal Poisson brackets using the theory of distributions, of pseudodifferential operators and of Poisson vertex algebras, respectively. We show that the three approaches lead to similar computations and same results.
We introduce a bracket on 1-forms defined on ${\cal J}^{\infty}(S^1, \mathbb{R}^n)$, the infinite jet extension of the space of loops and prove that it satisfies the standard properties of a Poisson bracket. Using this bracket, we show that certain hierarchies appearing in the framework of $F$-manifolds with compatible flat connection $(M, \nabla, \circ)$ are Hamiltonian in a generalized sense. Moreover, we show that if a metric $g$ compatible with $\nabla$ is also invariant with respect to $\circ$, then this generalized Hamiltonian set-up reduces to the standard one.
It is well known that the compatible linear and quadratic Poisson brackets of the full symmetric and of the standard open Toda lattices are restrictions of linear and quadratic $r$-matrix Poisson brackets on the associative algebra ${\mathrm{gl}}(n,{\mathbb{R}})$. We here show that the quadratic bracket on ${\mathrm{gl}}(n,{\mathbb{R}})$, corresponding to the $r$-matrix defined by the splitting of ${\mathrm{gl}}(n,{\mathbb{R}})$ into the direct sum of the upper triangular and orthogonal Lie subalgebras, descends by Poisson reduction from a quadratic Poisson structure on the cotangent bundle $T…
We introduce new examples of mappings defining noncommutative root space generalizations for the Witt, Ricci flow, and Poisson bracket continual Lie algebras.
We address the problem of classifying discrete differential-geometric Poisson brackets (dDGPBs) of any fixed order on target space of dimension 1. It is proved that these Poisson brackets (PBs) are in one-to-one correspondence with the intersection points of certain projective hypersurfaces. In addition, they can be reduced to cubic PB of standard Volterra lattice by discrete Miura-type transformations. Finally, improving a consolidation lattice procedure, we obtain new families of non-degenerate, vector-valued and first order dDGPBs, which can be considered in the framework of admissible Lie-…
We compute the Poisson cohomology of a scalar Poisson bracket of Dubrovin-Novikov type with $D$ independent variables. We find that the second and third cohomology groups are generically non-vanishing in $D>1$. Hence, in contrast with the $D=1$ case, the deformation theory in the multivariable case is non-trivial.
In this paper, we consider Hamiltonian structures of hydrodynamic type and some of their generalizations. In particular, we discuss the questions concerning the structure and special forms of the corresponding Poisson brackets and the connection of such structures with the theory of integration of systems of hydrodynamic type.
We establish a new representation of the infinite hierarchy of Pois- son brackets (PB) for the open Toda lattice in terms of its spectral curve. For the classical Poisson bracket (PB) we give a representation in the form of a contour integral of some special Abelian differential (meromorphic one-form) on the spectral curve. All higher brackets of the infinite hierarchy are obtained by multiplication of the one-form by a power of the spectral parameter.
By introducing an integration factor to the differential one-form of contact dynamics, equations of motion are derived variationally, and contact Poisson bracket and contact Lagrangian are formulated. Discrete symplectic integrator, named hybrid leap-frog method, is found to be a numerical solver of equations of motion for contact dissipative systems.
We classify the dispersive Poisson brackets with one dependent variable and two independent variables, with leading order of hydrodynamic type, up to Miura transformations. We show that, in contrast to the case of a single independent variable for which a well known triviality result exists, the Miura equivalence classes are parametrised by an infinite number of constants, which we call numerical invariants of the brackets. We obtain explicit formulas for the first few numerical invariants.
In this note the notion of Poisson brackets in Kontsevich's "Lie World" is developed. These brackets can be thought of as "universally" defined classical Poisson structures, namely formal expressions only involving the structure maps of a quadratic Lie algebra. We prove a uniqueness statement about these Poisson brackets with a given moment map. As an application we get formulae for the linearization of the quasi-Poisson structure of the moduli space of flat connections on a punctured sphere, and thereby identify their symplectic leaves with the reduction of coadjoint orbits. Equivalently, we …
We implement an algorithm for the computation of Schouten bracket of weakly nonlocal Hamiltonian operators in three different computer algebra systems: Maple, Reduce and Mathematica. This class of Hamiltonian operators encompass almost all the examples coming from the theory of (1+1)-integrable evolutionary PDEs
Reversible evolution of macroscopic and mesoscopic systems can be conveniently constructed from two ingredients: an energy functional and a Poisson bracket. The goal of this paper is to elucidate how the Poisson brackets can be constructed and what additional features we also gain by the construction. In particular, the Poisson brackets governing reversible evolution in one-particle kinetic theory, kinetic theory of binary mixtures, binary fluid mixtures, classical irreversible thermodynamics and classical hydrodynamics are derived from Liouville equation. Although the construction is quite na…
The quantization problem for the trace-bracket algebra, derived from double Poisson brackets, is discussed. We obtain a generalization of the boundary YBE (or so-called ABCD-algebra) for the quantization of quadratic trace-brackets. A dynamical deformation is proposed on the lines of Gervais-Neveu-Felder dynamical quantum algebras.
A general approach is proposed to constructing covariant Poisson brackets in the space of histories of a classical field-theoretical model. The approach is based on the concept of Lagrange anchor, which was originally developed as a tool for path-integral quantization of Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian dynamics. The proposed covariant Poisson brackets generalize the Peierls' bracket construction known in the Lagrangian field theory.
In this note we show how to construct a homotopy BV-algebra on the algebra of differential forms over a higher Poisson manifold. The Lie derivative along the higher Poisson structure provides the generating operator.
We consider a hierarchy of Poisson structures defined on rational functions on the Riemann sphere. This hierarchy is originated in the theory of the integrable Camassa-Holm equation associated with the Krein's string spectral problem. Previously the proof of Jacobi identity was obtained by reducing the bracket to canonical Darboux coordinates. The main result of this note is a direct proof of the Jacobi identity. It turns out that the direct proof of the Jacobi identity is far from trivial. We also give an example of another hierarchy of Poisson brackets and construct Darboux coordinates for i…
In field theory the Poisson bracket $\{F, \mathcal{H}\}$ between an arbitrary function $F$ and the system Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}$ acquires odd contributions. Here a modification is worked out to remove those terms, which leads to a certain version of the energy-momentum tensor. The resulting Poisson bracket is thus more easily accessible for quantization. An outlook hereupon is given, based on a field theoretic alternative to non-commutative spacetime.
We detail the construction of a weak Poisson bracket over a submanifold of a smooth manifold M with respect to a local foliation of this submanifold. Such a bracket satisfies a weak type Jacobi identity but may be viewed as a usual Poisson bracket on the space of leaves of the foliation. We then lift this weak Poisson bracket to a weak odd Poisson bracket on the odd tangent bundle, interpreted as a weak Koszul bracket on differential forms on M. This lift is achieved by encoding the weak Poisson structure into a homotopy Poisson structure on an extended manifold, and lifting the Hamiltonian fu…
The theory of Poisson Vertex Algebras (PVAs) is a good framework to treat Hamiltonian partial differential equations. A PVA consists of a pair $(\mathcal{A},\{\cdot_λ\cdot\})$ of a differential algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and a bilinear operation called the $λ$-bracket. We extend the definition to the class of algebras $\mathcal{A}$ endowed with $d\geq1$ commuting derivations. We call this structure a \emph{multidimensional PVA}: it is a suitable setting to study Hamiltonian PDEs with $d$ spatial dimensions. We apply this theory to the study of deformations of the Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic ty…
We construct a symplectic realization and a bi-hamiltonian formulation of a 3-dimensional system whose solution are the Jacobi elliptic functions. We generalize this system and the related Poisson brackets to higher dimensions. These more general systems are parametrized by lines in projective space. For these rank 2 Poisson brackets the Jacobi identity is satisfied only when the Pl\" ucker relations hold. Two of these Poisson brackets are compatible if and only if the corresponding lines in projective space intersect. We present several examples of such systems.
Poisson brackets admit infinitesimal symmetries which are encoded using oriented graphs; this construction is due to Kontsevich (1996). We formulate several open problems about combinatorial and topological properties of the graphs involved, about integrability and analytic properties of such symmetry flows (in particular, for known classes of Poisson brackets), and about cohomological, differential geometric, and quantum aspects of the theory. Keywords: Poisson bracket, Jacobi identity, infinitesimal symmetry, affine manifold, Poisson cohomology, graph complex.
In this paper we study the problem of Hamiltonization of nonholonomic systems from a geometric point of view. We use gauge transformations by 2-forms (in the sense of Severa and Weinstein [29]) to construct different almost Poisson structures describing the same nonholonomic system. In the presence of symmetries, we observe that these almost Poisson structures, although gauge related, may have fundamentally different properties after reduction, and that brackets that Hamiltonize the problem may be found within this family. We illustrate this framework with the example of rigid bodies with gene…
Given a symplectic form and a pseudo-riemannian metric on a manifold, a non degenerate even Poisson bracket on the algebra of differential forms is defined and its properties are studied. A comparison with the Koszul-Schouten bracket is established.
We discuss associative analogues of classical Yang-Baxter equation meromorphically dependent on parameters. We discover that such equations enter in a description of a general class of parameter-dependent Poisson structures and double Lie and Poisson structures in sense of M. Van den Bergh. We propose a classification of all solutions for one-dimensional associative Yang-Baxter equations.
We find optimal upper bounds for spectral invariants of a Hamiltonian whose support is contained in a union of mutually disjoint displaceable balls. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by Leonid Polterovich in connection with his recent work on Poisson bracket invariants of coverings.
We introduce the cluster algebraic formulation of the integrable difference equations, the discrete Lotka-Volterra equation and the discrete Liouville equation, from the view point of the general T-system and Y-system. We also study the Poisson structure for the cluster algebra, and give the associated Poisson bracket for the two difference equations.
We give a method to construct Poisson brackets $\{\cdot,\cdot\}$ on Banach manifolds~$M$, for which the value of $\{f,g\}$ at some point $m\in M$ may depend on higher order derivatives of the smooth functions $f,g\colon M\to{\mathbb R}$, and not only on the first-order derivatives, as it is the case on all finite-dimensional manifolds. We discuss specific examples in this connection, as well as the impact on the earlier research on Poisson geometry of Banach manifolds. Those brackets are counterexamples to the claim that the Leibniz property for any Poisson bracket on a Banach manifold would i…
Reversible part of evolution equations of physical systems is often generated by a Poisson bracket. We discuss geometric means of construction of Poisson brackets and their mutual coupling (direct, semidirect and matched-pair products) as well as projections of Poisson brackets to less detailed Poisson brackets. This way the Hamiltonian coupling between transport of mixtures and electrodynamics is elucidated.
In this paper we construct a non-skewsymmetric version of a Poisson bracket on the algebra of smooth functions on an odd Jacobi supermanifold. We refer to such Poisson-like brackets as Loday-Poisson brackets. We examine the relations between the Hamiltonian vector fields with respect to both the odd Jacobi structure and the Loday-Poisson structure. Furthermore, we show that the Loday-Poisson bracket satisfies the Leibniz rule over the noncommutative product derived from the homological vector field.
We construct the family of algebroid brackets $[\cdot,\cdot]_{c,v}$ on the tangent bundle $T^*M$ to a Poisson manifold $(M,π)$ starting from an algebroid bracket of differential forms. We use these brackets to generate Poisson structures on the tangent bundle $TM$. Next, in the case when $M$ is equipped with a bi-Hamiltonian structure $(M,π_1, π_2)$ we show how to construct another family of Poisson structures. Moreover we present how to find Casimir functions for those structures and we discuss some particular examples.
How to give a natural geometric definition of a covariant Poisson bracket in classical field theory has for a long time been an open problem - as testified by the extensive literature on "multisymplectic Poisson brackets", together with the fact that all these proposals suffer from serious defects. On the other hand, the functional approach does provide a good candidate which has come to be known as the Peierls - De Witt bracket and whose construction in a geometrical setting is now well understood. Here, we show how the basic "multisymplectic Poisson bracket" already proposed in the 1970s can…
A common approach to the theory of nonlocal Poisson brackets, seen from the operatorial point of view, has been to keep implicit the sets on which these brackets act. In this paper we aim to explicitly define appropriate functional spaces underlying to the theory of 1 codimensional weakly nonlocal Poisson brackets, motivating the definitions, and to prove the validity in this context of some classical results in the field. We start by introducing the spaces for the local case, which will serve as building tools for those in the nonlocal one. The definition and the study of these nonlocal funct…
In the phase space $\R^{2d}$, let us denote $\{A,B\}$ the Poisson bracket of two smooth classical observables and $\{A, B\}_\circledast $ their Moyal bracket, defined as the Weyl symbol of $i[ A, B]$, where $ \hat A$ is the Weyl quantization of $A$ and $[ \hat A, \hat B]= \hat A \hat B- \hat B \hat A$ (commutator). In this note we prove that if a smooth Hamiltonian $H$ on the phase space $\R^{2d}$, with derivatives of moderate growth, satisfies $\{A,H\}= \{A, H\}_\circledast$ for any smooth and bounded observable $A$ then $H$ must be a polynomial of degree at most 2. This is related with the G…
We introduce a natural class of multicomponent local Poisson structures $\mathcal P_k + \mathcal P_1$, where $\mathcal P_1$ is a local Poisson bracket of order one and $\mathcal P_k$ is a homogeneous Poisson bracket of odd order $k$ under assumption that is has Darboux coordinates (Darboux-Poisson bracket) and non-degenerate. For such brackets we obtain the general formulas in arbitrary coordinates, find normal forms (related to Frobenius triples) and provide the description of the Casimirs, using purely algebraic procedure. In two-component case we completely classify such brackets up to the …
