The systematic study of rational surfaces $Y$ with an anticanonical cycle $D$ dates back to a fundamental paper of Looijenga in 1981. Recently, Gross, Hacking and Keel have introduced new ideas into the subject. The goal of this mainly expository paper is to survey some results about such surfaces, old and new. We discuss the birational geometry and deformation theory of such pairs as well as the behavior of nef and big linear systems. We prove a theorem of Torelli type due to Gross-Hacking-Keel and describe some consequences. Among the new results in this paper are (1) a proof that the diffeomorphism type of a pair $(Y,D)$ is the same as its deformation type, and (2) a new characterization of the roots of the pair, i.e. the integral classes of square $-2$ in $H^2(Y)$ orthogonal to the components of $D$ which become the class of a smooth rational curve in some deformation.
Building on the work of Casagrande-Codogni-Fanelli, we develop our study on the birational geometry of the Fano fourfold $Y=M_{S,-K_S}$ which is the moduli space of semi-stable rank-two torsion-free sheaves with $c_1=-K_S$ and $c_2=2$ on a polarised degree-one del Pezzo surface $(S,-K_S)$. Based on the relation between $Y$ and the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^4$ in $8$ points, we describe completely the base scheme of the anticanonical system $|{-}K_Y|$. We also prove that the Bertini involution $ι_Y$ of $Y$, induced by the Bertini involution $ι_S$ of $S$, preserves every member in $|{-}K_Y|$. In pa…
We consider the moduli space of log smooth pairs formed by a cubic surface and an anticanonical divisor. We describe all compactifications of this moduli space which are constructed using Geometric Invariant Theory and the anticanonical polarization. The construction depends on a weight on the divisor. For smaller weights the stable pairs consist of mildly singular surfaces and very singular divisors. Conversely, a larger weight allows more singular surfaces, but it restricts the singularities on the divisor. The one-dimensional space of stability conditions decomposes in a wall-chamber struct…
Characterization of log del Pezzo pairs via anticanonical models
Choosing a normal crossings anticanonical divisor of $\mathbb{P}^2$ leads to four log Calabi-Yau surfaces, three of which are Looijenga pairs. In this survey article, I describe how to count rational curves in these that intersect each component of the divisor in one point of maximal tangency.
We exhibit examples of pairs $(X,D)$ where $X$ is a smooth projective variety and $D$ is an anticanonical reduced simple normal crossing divisor such that the deformations of $(X,D)$ are obstructed. These examples are constructed via toric geometry.
We show that any commutative rationally ruled surface with a choice of anticanonical curve admits a 1-parameter family of noncommutative deformations parametrized by the Jacobian of the anticanonical curve, and show that many standard facts from commutative geometry (blowups commute, Quot schemes are projective, etc.) carry over. The key new tool in studying these deformations is a relatively simple description of their derived categories and the relevant t-structures; this also allows us to establish nontrivial derived equivalences for deformations of elliptic surfaces. We also establish that…
The 'moduli continuity method' permits an explicit algebraisation of the Gromov-Hausdorff compactification of Kähler-Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds in some fundamental examples. In this paper, we apply such method in the 'log setting' to describe explicitly some compact moduli spaces of K-polystable log Fano pairs. We focus on situations when the angle of singularities is perturbed in an interval sufficiently close to one, by considering constructions arising from Geometric Invariant Theory. More precisely, we discuss the cases of pairs given by cubic surfaces with anticanonical sections, …
We show that if $(X,Y)$ is a simple normal crossings log Calabi--Yau pair, then there is a real torus of dimension equal to the codimension of the smallest stratum of $Y$ which can be used to construct $W_{2k-1}H^k(X \setminus Y;\mathbb{Q})$ for all $k$. We show that an analogous result holds for degenerations of Calabi--Yau varieties. We use this to show that P=W type results hold for pairs $(X,Y)$ consisting of a rational surface $X$ and a nodal anticanonical divisor $Y$, and for K3 surfaces.
A cusp singularity is an elliptic surface singularity whose minimal resolution is a cycle of smooth rational curves meeting transversely. Cusp singularities come in naturally dual pairs. In 1981, Looijenga proved that whenever a cusp singularity is smoothable, the minimal resolution of the dual cusp is an anticanonical divisor of some smooth rational surface. He conjectured the converse. Recent work of Gross, Hacking, and Keel has proven Looijenga's conjecture using methods from mirror symmetry. This paper provides an alternative proof of Looijenga's conjecture based on a combinatorial criteri…
A cusp singularity is a surface singularity whose minimal resolution is a cycle of smooth rational curves meeting transversely. Cusp singularities come in naturally dual pairs. Looijenga proved in 1981 that if a cusp singularity is smoothable, the minimal resolution of the dual cusp is the anticanonical divisor of some smooth rational surface. In 1983, the second author and Miranda gave a criterion for smoothability of a cusp singularity, in terms of the existence of a K-trivial semistable model for the central fiber of such a smoothing. We study these "Type III degenerations" of rational surf…
Building on the work of Mukai, we explore the birational geometry of the moduli spaces M_{S,L} of semistable rank two torsion-free sheaves, with c_1=-K_S and c_2=2, on a polarized degree one del Pezzo surface (S,L); this is related to the birational geometry of the blow-up X of P^4 in 8 points. Our analysis is explicit and is obtained by looking at the variation of stability conditions. Then we provide a careful investigation of the blow-up X and of the moduli space Y=M_{S,-K_S}, which is a remarkable family of smooth Fano 4-folds. In particular we describe the relevant cones of divisors of Y,…
In this note we introduce generalised pairs from the perspective of the evolution of the notion of space in birational algebraic geometry. We describe some applications of generalised pairs in recent years and then mention a few open problems.
For an arithmetic surface $X\to B=\operatorname{Spec} O_K$ the Deligne pairing $\left <\,,\,\right > \colon \operatorname{Pic}(X) \times \operatorname{Pic}(X) \to \operatorname{Pic}(B)$ gives the "schematic contribution" to the Arakelov intersection number. We present an idelic and adelic interpretation of the Deligne pairing; this is the first crucial step for a full idelic and adelic interpretation of the Arakelov intersection number. For the idelic approach we show that the Deligne pairing can be lifted to a pairing $\left<\,,\,\right>_i:\ker(d^1_\times)\times \ker(d^1_\times)\to\operatorna…
An elliptic pair $(X, C)$ is a projective rational surface $X$ with log terminal singularities, and an irreducible curve $C$ contained in the smooth locus of $X$, with arithmetic genus one and self-intersection zero. They are a useful tool for determining whether the pseudo-effective cone of $X$ is polyhedral, and interesting algebraic and geometric objects in their own right. Especially of interest are toric elliptic pairs, where $X$ is the blow-up of a projective toric surface at the identity element of the torus. In this paper, we classify all toric elliptic pairs of Picard number two. Stri…
Let $k$ be an infinite field of characteristic 0, and $X$ a del Pezzo surface of degree $d$ with at least one $k$-rational point. Various methods from algebraic geometry and arithmetic statistics have shown the Zariski density of the set $X(k)$ of $k$-rational points in $X$ for $d\geq2$ (under an extra condition for $d=2$), but fail to work in generality when the degree of $X$ is 1, leaving a large class of del Pezzo surfaces for which the question of density of rational points is still open. In this paper, we prove the Zariski density of $X(k)$ when $X$ has degree 1 and is represented in the …
We study the cohomology rings of snc log symplectic pairs $(X,Y)$ which have log symplectic forms of pure weight. We show that under a certain natural condition, the cohomology ring of $X \setminus Y$ exhibits the curious hard Lefschetz property. Analogous results are shown to hold for limit mixed Hodge structures associated to good degenerations of projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. We provide several examples of log symplectic pairs of pure weight including a class of cluster-type varieties, and examples coming from the work of Feigin and Odesski. We show that the compo…
In arXiv:2011.08830 we established a series of correspondences relating five enumerative theories of log Calabi-Yau surfaces, i.e. pairs $(Y,D)$ with $Y$ a smooth projective complex surface and $D=D_1+\dots +D_l$ an anticanonical divisor on $Y$ with each $D_i$ smooth and nef. In this paper we explore the generalisation to $Y$ being a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack with projective coarse moduli space of dimension 2, and $D_i$ nef $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier divisors. We consider in particular three infinite families of orbifold log Calabi-Yau surfaces, and for each of them we provide closed form solutio…
We will survey some aspects of the smooth topology, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry and contact geometry of anti-canonical pairs in complex dimension two.
We give a new construction of noncommutative surfaces via elliptic difference operators, attaching a 1-parameter noncommutative deformation to any projective rational surface with smooth anticanonical curve. The construction agrees with one implicit in work of Van den Bergh (iterated blowups of noncommutative Hirzebruch surfaces), but the construction enables one to prove a number of new facts about these surfaces. We show that they are noncommutative smooth proper surfaces in the sense of Chan and Nyman, with projective Quot schemes, that moduli spaces of simple sheaves are Poisson and that m…
We consider a special case of the outer bi-Lipschitz classification of real semialgebraic (or, more general, definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure) surface germs, obtained as a union of two normally embedded Hölder triangles. We define a combinatorial invariant of an equivalence class of such surface germs, called $στ$-pizza, and conjecture that, in this special case, it is a complete combinatorial invariant of outer bi-Lipschitz equivalence.
