The reliability of perovskite material LSCF to be used as cathode parts in solid oxide fuel cells also relies on its mechanical properties. Adequate surface conditions are desired when the as-sintered porous thin films are subjected to nanoindentation for mechanical property determination. In this study, extensive cracks and considerable surface roughness were found in the LSCF films after sintering at high temperatures. This would significantly scatter the nanoindentation data and result in unreliable measurements. Various attempts including the comparison of film deposition methods, drying and sintering processes, and reformulating the ink were made to improve the surface quality. Results revealed little dependence of cracking and surface roughness on deposition methods, drying or sintering processes. It was found that the critical factor for obtaining crack-free and smooth LSCF films was the ability of the ink to be self-levelling in the earlier wet state. Reproducible nanoindentation measurements were obtained for the films with improved surface quality.
In this paper we show how reliable measurements on porous ceramic films can be made by appropriate nanoindentation experiments and analysis. Room-temperature mechanical properties of the mixed-conducting perovskite material LSCF6428 were investigated by nanoindentation of porous bulk samples and porous films sintered at temperatures from 900-1200C. A spherical indenter was used so that the contact area was much greater than the scale of the porous microstructure. The elastic modulus of the bulk samples was found to increase from 33.8-174.3 GPa and hardness from 0.64-5.32 GPa as the porosity de…
The second harmonic method is a dynamic indentation technique independent of the direct indentation depth measurement. It can be used to determine near-surface mechanical properties of bulk materials more precisely than classical dynamic nano-indentation. In this paper, the second harmonic method is extended to the measurement of the mechanical properties of thin PMMA layers deposited onto silicon wafers. It is shown that this new technique gives precise results at small depths (less than 100nm), even for films with a thickness lower than 500nm, which was not possible to achieve with the class…
Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) films have been shown to demonstrate various tribological behaviors: in ultra-high vacuum (UHV), with either friction coefficients as low as 0.01 or less and very mild wear, or very high friction coefficients (>0.4) and drastic wear. These behaviors depend notably on gaseous environment, hydrogen content of the film [1], and on its viscoplastic properties [2,3]. A relation between superlow friction in UHV and viscoplasticity has indeed been established for a-C:H films and confirmed for a fluorinated sample (a-C:F:H). In this study, nanoindentation and nanoscratch test…
The effect of substrate was studied using nanoindentation on thin films. Soft films on hard substrate showed more pile up than usual which was attributed to the dislocation pile up at the film substrate interface. The effect of tip blunting on the load depth and hardness plots of nanoindentation was shown. The experimental date of variation of Vickers hardness with film thickness and loads were fitted and new parameters were analyzed. The delaminated area was analyzed using geometrical shapes using optical view of the failure region along with the load displacement Indentation fracture using N…
A simulation study demonstrates that localization can arise as the result of the breakdown of stable quasi-crystal-like atomic configurations. Samples produced at elevated quench rates and via more energetic processes contain a lower fraction of such configurations and exhibit significantly less pronounced localization and shorter spacing between bands. In the samples produced by the lowest quench rates localization is accompanied by the amorphization of material with initially quasi-crystal-like medium range order. This result is of particular significance in light of recent experimental evid…
The mechanical properties of azobenzene-containing polymer films are statistically measured by instrumented nanoindentation experiment in the dark and under illumination in the absorption band of the azobenzene molecules, with special emphasis on the creep behavior and recoverability. We use Dispersed Red 1 azobenzene derivatives, which remain in the stable trans isomer state in the dark and form a dynamical photo-stationary state between cis and trans isomer under illumination. Light induces a higher change in the film hardness than in the elastic stiffness, revealing the occurrence of a visc…
QCDFT is a multiscale modeling approach that can simulate multi-million atoms effectively via density functional theory (DFT). The method is based on the framework of quasicontinuum (QC) approach with DFT as its sole energetics formulation. The local QC energy is calculated by DFT with Cauchy-Born hypothesis and the nonlocal QC energy is determined by a self-consistent embedding approach, which couples nonlocal QC atoms to the vertices of the finite-elements at the local QC region. The QCDFT method is applied to a nanoindentation study of an Al thin film in the presence and absence of Mg impur…
Nanoindentation is an effective way of finding mechanical properties at nanoscale. They are especially useful for thin films where elimination of the substrate effect is required. The mechanism is based upon depth sensing indentation based on Oliver and Pharr modeling. Nanoindentation was used to evaluate the nanomechanical and fractographic properties of hard coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering. Radial and lateral cracks accompanied by delamination of the coatings were observed during the indentation tests. A novel phenomenon of stress induced crystallization was observed in case of th…
We employ a simple model to describe the phase behavior of 4He and Ar in a hypothetical porous material consisting of a regular array of infinitely long, solid, parallel cylinders. We find that high porosity geometries exhibit two transitions: from vapor to film and from film to capillary condensed liquid. At low porosity, the film is replaced by a ``necking'' configuration, and for a range of intermediate porosity there are three transitions: from vapor to film, from film to necking and from necking to a capillary condensed phase.
Nanowear properties of sputtered Au films in dry and wet environments were investigated using a scanning nanoindenter. Gold exhibits over 10 times higher wear rate in water compared to air at the same normal load of 10 microN. The friction coefficient obtained from scratch tests remained constant at 0.2 regardless of the testing conditions. Au surface roughness increased from 3 to 8 nm after 200 wear cycles in air. Surface ripples, 200 nm high developed on the Au film surface after 200 wear cycles in water. Film scratch hardness compares well with the nanoindentation hardness.
The problem of determining the porous silicon (PSi) optical constants, thickness, porosity, and surface quality using just reflectance data is board employing evolutionary algorithms. The reflectance measurements were carried out of PSi films over crystalline silicon (c-Si) substrate, and the fitting procedure was done by using a genetic algorithm. The PSi is treated as a mixture of c-Si and air. Therefore, its effective optical constants can be correlated with the porosity trough effective medium approximation (EMA). The results show that genetic fitting has a good match with the experimental…
We report the reduction in residual stress of AlN thin films and also the crystal structure, surface morphology and nanomechanical properties of magnetron sputtered as a function of substrate temperature (Ts, 35 - 600 ?C). The residual stress of these films was calculated by sin2 technique and found that they are varying from tensile to compression with temperature (Ts). Evolution of crystalline growth of AlN films was studied by GIXRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and a preferred a-axis orientation was observed at 400 ?C. The cross-sectional TEM micrograph and selected area elect…
In this work, the authors fabricated Cu2O porous nanostructured films (PNFs) on glass slide substrates by the newly developed positive bias deposition approach in a balanced magnetron sputtering (MS) system. It was found that the surface morphology, crystal structure and optical property of the as-deposited products were greatly dependent on the applied positive substrate bias. In particular, when the substrate was biased at +50 V and +150 V, both of the as-prepared Cu2O PNFs exhibited a unique triangular pyramids-like structure with obvious edges and corners and little gluing, a preferred ori…
Experimental materials data are heterogeneous and include a variety of metadata for processing and characterization conditions, making the implementation of data-driven approaches for developing novel materials difficult. In this paper, we introduce the Thin-Film Alloy Database (TFADB), a materials data management platform, designed for combinatorially investigated thin-film alloys through various experimental tools. Using TFADB, researchers can readily upload, edit, and retrieve multidimensional experimental alloy data, such as composition, thickness, X-ray Diffraction, electrical resistivity…
The PTFE (Teflon) has been selected as the self-template structural material in preparation of VO2 films using reactive magnetron sputtering systems and post annealing progress. Spontaneous random nano-porous structures of VO2 films growing on quartz glasses have been deliberately established via bottom-up processing through this novel and facile approach. The nano-porous VO2 films exhibit an excellent optical performance based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), with ultrahigh luminous transmittance (Tlum) up to 78.0% and the promoted solar modulation ability (ΔTsol) of 14.1%. Mean…
We analyze dynamics of 3D coreless vortices in superfluid films covering porous substrates. The 3D vortex dynamics is derived from the 2D dynamics of the film. The motion of a 3D vortex is a sequence of jumps between neighboring substrate cells, which can be described, nevertheless, in terms of quasi-continuous motion with average vortex velocity. The vortex velocity is derived from the dissociation rate of vortex-antivortex pairs in a 2D film, which was developed in the past on the basis of the Kosterlitz-Thouless theory. The theory explains the rotation-induced dissipation peak in torsion-os…
Raman studies of nanocomposite SiCN thin film by sputtering showed that with an increase of substrate temperature from room temperature to 500oC, a transition from mostly sp2 graphitic phase to sp3 carbon took place which was observed from the variation of ID/IG ratio and the peak shifts. This process resulted in the growth of C3N4 and Si3N4 crystallites in the amorphous matrix which led to an increase in hardness and modulus obtained through nanoindentation. However, at a further higher temperature of 600oC, again an increase of sp2 C concentration in the film was observed and the H and E val…
The synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in a monolithic morphology is a promising way to achieve the transition of this class of materials from academia to industrial applications. The sol-gel process has been widely employed to produce MOF monoliths. It is relatively cheap and simple compared to other techniques (e.g., mechanical densification) and moreover it allows to produce "pure" monoliths, i.e., without the need of using binders or templates that could affect the functional properties of the MOF. Understanding the mechanical properties of these monoliths is crucial for their tr…
LSCF is a promising candidate for the cathode in SOFCs. Understanding the microstructural characteristics is crucial to its application because they predominately determine the performance and durability of the porous cathodes and hence of the SOFCs. To date little work has been reported on its mechanical properties and their correlation with the 3D microstructures. The main purpose of this research was to study the mechanical properties of both films and bulk samples, and to evaluate the effect of microstructural parameters, by means of both experimental and numerical methods. Room-temperatur…
In this work, the instabilities at the nanoscale (i.e. nanoinstabilities) of triangular pyramids-like Cu2O porous nanostructured films (PNFs) are studied by heating treatments under different atmosphere and temperature. It is found that the nanoscale building triangular-pyramids turn round preferentially at the sharp angles and/or coalesce with their contacting ones by directional diffusion and plastic flow of atoms, which are driven by the nonuniformly-distributed surface nanocurvature. As a result, the triangular pyramids become quasi-sphere shape and the PNF evolves into a big, dense partic…
During conventional nanoindentation measurements, the indentation depths are usually larger than 1-10 nm, which hinders the ability to study ultra-thin films ($<$ 10 nm) and supported atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we discuss the development of modulated Å-indentation to achieve sub-Å indentation depths during force-indentation measurements while also imaging materials with nanoscale resolution. Modulated nanoindentation (MoNI) was originally invented to measure the radial elasticity of multi-walled nanotubes. Now, by using extremely small amplitude oscillations ($\ll$ 1…
A modified electron beam evaporator has been used judiciously to synthesize TiN thin films with (111) preferred orientation. This new design involved in creating local plasma by accelerating the secondary electrons emitted from the evaporating ingot by a positively biased semi-cylindrical anode plate kept in the vicinity and a jet of N2 gas has been focused towards the substrate as a reactive gas. We have observed a preferred orientation (111) with 25 degree angle to the surface normal and this was confirmed by pole figure analysis. The phenomenon of preferred orientation (111) has been explai…
We report an experimental study of generation of photo-induced voltage in nano-porous gold (NPG) thin film under the radiation of obliquely incident nanosecond laser light in visible regions. For s- polarized light, negative voltage is observed along the incident plane for positive incident angles, while for p- polarized light, positive voltage is observed for wavelength longer than 510 nm, while it turns to negative for shorter wavelengths. The transverse voltage for various polarized light is explained in terms of symmetry of configuration and that of microscopically random but macroscopical…
A study of wetting was carried out on porous silicon films with pore diameters spanning three orders of magnitude. Water contact angle measurements on adjoining porous and nonporous regions yielded Wenzel roughness ratios that were either unphysical (less than unity) or unrealistically low when compared to those expected from specific surface area considerations. Moreover, results obtained from a sample consisting of a microporous film on a macroporous layer gave contact angles that were very similar to those found on films consisting of only a single microporous layer, contrary to what would …
The results of the investigation of impact of pulse humidity changes on the parameters of dynamic current-voltage loops and charge-voltage loops, and also dynamic transient currents for Pt/LiNbO3-film/Pt:Ti/SiO2/Si and porous Si/Si structures are presented. The peculiarities of current-voltage loops and transient currents curves are characteristic for poling processes in the space charge region similar to that observed in the case of ionic semiconductors. The efficiency of using the methods of dynamic electrophysical characterization for studying characteristics of various under fast humidity …
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) enables the conformal coating of porous materials, making the technique suitable for pore size tuning at the atomic level, e.g., for applications in catalysis, gas separation and sensing. It is, however, not straightforward to obtain information about the conformality of ALD coatings deposited in pores with diameters in the low mesoporous regime (< 10 nm). In this work, it is demonstrated that in situ synchrotron based grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering (GISAXS) can provide valuable information on the change in density and internal surface area during …
In this work, amorphous thin films in Mg-Si-O-N system were prepared in order to investigate the dependence of optical and mechanical properties on Mg composition. Reactive RF magnetron co-sputtering from magnesium and silicon targets were used for the deposition of Mg-Si-O-N thin films. Films were deposited on float glass, silica wafers and sapphire substrates in an Ar, N2 and O2 gas mixture. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and nanoindentation were employed to characterize the composition, surface morphology,…
Two-dimensional simulations are used to explore topological transitions that occur during the formation of films grown from grains that are seeded on substrates. This is done for a relatively large range of the initial value $Φ_s$ of the grain surface fraction $Φ$. The morphology of porous films is captured at the transition when grains connect to form a one-component network using newly developed raster-free algorithms that combine computational geometry and network theory. Further insight on the morphology of porous films and their suspended counterparts is obtained by studying the pore surf…
We studied the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic-semiconductor composites based on nickel and porous-GaN, motivated by the effort to couple magnetic and semiconductor functionality. Nickel-infiltrated and nickel-coated (laminated thin-film) porous GaN structures were fabricated by electrodeposition, and their magnetic properties were subsequently examined collectively, by vibrating sample magnetometry and on the nanoscale, by magnetic force microscopy. We successfully demonstrated the ability to realize nickel infiltrated porous GaN, where the magnetic properties were dominated by the infil…
The epitaxy of MoO2 on c_plane sapphire substrates is examined. A theoretical approach, based on density functional theory calculations of the strain energy, allowed to predict the preferred layer/substrate epitaxial relationships. To test the results of these calculations, MoO2/(001) Al2O3 heterostructures were grown using the chemically_driven isothermal close space vapour transport technique. At the early stages of the growth, two kinds of morphologies were obtained, using the same growth parameters: lying and standing flakes. The composition and morphology, as well as the layer/substrate e…
A "two-dimensional ballistic deposition" (2D-BD) code has been developed to study the geometric effects in ballistic deposition of thin-film growth. Circular discs are used as depositing specie to understand the shadowing effects during the evolution of a thin-film. We carried out the 2D-BD simulations for the angles of deposition $20^0$-$80^0$ in steps of $10^0$. Standard deviations $1^0$, $2^0$, $4^0$, $6^0$ and $10^0$ are used for each angle of deposition with disc size of $1.5 \overset{\circ}{A}$ to understand its effect on the microstructure of the thin-films. Angle of growth, porosity an…
The surface area of Bi2Te3 thin films was increased by introducing nanoscale porosity. Temperature dependent resistivity and magnetotransport measurements were conducted both on as-grown and porous samples (23 and 70 nm). The longitudinal resistivity of the porous samples became more metallic, indicating the increased surface area resulted in transport that was more surface-like. Weak antilocalization (WAL) was present in all samples, and remarkably the phase coherence length doubled in the porous samples. This increase is likely due to the large Fermi velocity of the Dirac surface states. Our…
The effect of graded or constant bias voltages (-40 V, -80 V and -40/60/80 V) on size grain and surface defects of arc PVD deposited CrN films was investigated. Corrosion resistance evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic curves (Tafel) and the mechanical behavior evaluated by means of instrumented nanoindentation and scratch testing was correlated with the microstructural changes. It was found that the bias voltage variation affects corrosion behavior due to the presence of defects (i.e. open voids, droplets) which also affects the failure mechanisms a…
Amorphous silica (a-SiO2) exhibits unique thermo-mechanical behaviors that set it apart from other glasses. However, there is still limited understanding of how this mechanical behavior is related to the atomic structure and to the preparation conditions of a-SiO2. Here, we used electron beam (e-beam) physical vapor deposition (PVD) to prepare a series of a-SiO2 films grown at different substrate temperatures and then combined molecular simulations with Positronium Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy and nanoindentation experiments to establish relations among processing, structure, and mechani…
In recent years, nanoporous thin films have been widely studied for thermoelectric applications. High thermoelectric performance is reported for nanoporous Si films, which is attributed to the dramatically reduced lattice thermal conductivity and bulk-like electrical properties. Porous materials can also be used in gas sensing applications by engineering the surface-trapped charges on pore edges. In this work, an analytical model is developed to explore the relationship between the thermoelectric properties and pore-edge charges in a periodic two-dimensional nanoporous material. The presented …
The interaction between two-dimensional crystals (2DCs) and metals is ubiquitous in 2D material research. Here we report how 2DC overlayers influence the recrystallization of relatively thick metal films and the subsequent synergetic benefits this provides for coupling surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) to photon emission in 2D semiconductors. We show that annealing 2DC/Au films on SiO2 results in a 'reverse epitaxial' process where initially nanocrystalline Au films become highly textured and in close crystallographic registry to the 2D crystal overlayer. With continued annealing, the metal un…
Highly porous Pt/Al thin film electrodes on yttria stabilized zirconia electrolytes were prepared by dealloying of co-sputtered Pt/Al films. The oxygen reduction capability of the resulting electrodes was analyzed in a solid oxide fuel cell setup at elevated temperatures. During initial heating to 523 K exceptionally high performances compared to conventional Pt thin film electrodes were measured. This results from the high internal surface area and large three phase boundary length obtained by the dealloying process. Exposure to elevated temperatures of 673 K or 873 K gave rise to degradation…
The effect of film morphology on its surface chemistry and band structure has been analyzed for gallium nitride epitaxial films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The film morphology has been studied using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, and the bandstructure, defect and emission properties have been studied by X ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. It was found that the highly porous GaN nanowall network shows the highest relative conductivity and does not have defect related luminescence. The flatter films were more resistive and showed…
In this paper, the oxidation-assisted dealloying (OAD) of Cu0.7Al0.3 films with different microstructures which were obtained by high vacuum annealing at different temperatures were studied using powder X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. It was observed that different microstructures such as eutectic mixture or solid solution, the grain size of Cu or Al component in eutectic-mixture Cu0.7Al0.3 films affected the corrosion morphology greatly. It thus provided a practical route to fabricate flexible CuO porous nanostructure-films …
In this work, we studied amorphous carbon ($a$-C) thin films deposited using direct current (dc) and high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) techniques. The microstructure and electronic properties reveal subtle differences in $a$-C thin films deposited by two techniques. While, films deposited with dcMS have a smooth texture typically found in $a$-C thin films, those deposited with HiPIMS consist of dense hillocks surrounded by a porous microstructure. The density of $a$-C thin films is a decisive parameter to judge their quality. Often, x-ray reflectivity (XRR) has been used to meas…
2D Ruddlesden Popper perovskites have been extensively studied for their exceptional optical and electronic characteristics while only a few studies have shed light on their mechanical properties. The existing literature mainly discusses the mechanical strength of single crystal perovskites, however a systematic study towards structure tunability of 2D perovskite thin films is still missing. In this study, we report the effect of number of inorganic layers `n' on elastic modulus of Butylammonium based 2D, quasi-2D perovskites and 3D perovskite using nanoindentation technique. The experimental …
Membranes derived from ultrathin polymeric films are promising to meet fast separations, but currently available approaches to produce polymer films with greatly reduced thicknesses on porous supports still faces challenges. Here, defect-free ultrathin polymer covering films (UPCFs) are realized by a facile general approach of rapid solvent evaporation. By fast evaporating dilute polymer solutions, we realize ultrathin coating (~30 nm) of porous substrates exclusively on the top surface, forming UPCFs with a block copolymer of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) at room temperature or a h…
We study a thin film growth model with temperature activated diffusion of adsorbed particles, allowing for the formation of overhangs and pores, but without detachment of adatoms or clusters from the deposit. Simulations in one-dimensional substrates are performed for several values of the diffusion-to-deposition ratio R of adatoms with a single bond and of the detachment probability epsilon per additional nearest neighbor (NN), respectively with activation energies are Es and Eb. If R and epsilon independently vary, regimes of low and high porosity are separated at 0.075 < epsilon_c < 0.09, w…

Cycling efficiency and rate capability of porous copper-coated, amorphous silicon thin-film negative electrodes are compared to equivalent silicon thin-film electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. The presence of a copper layer coated on the active material plays a beneficial role in increasing the cycling efficiency and the rate capability of silicon thin-film electrodes. Between 3C and C/8 discharge rates, the available cell energy decreased by 8% and 18% for 40 nm copper-coated silicon and equivalent silicon thin-film electrodes, respectively. Copper-coated silicon thin-film electrodes also sh…
We report a detailed study of surface and interface properties of pulsed-laser deposited NiMnSb films on Si (100) substrate as a function of film thickness. As the thickness of films is reduced below 35 nm formation of a porous layer is observed. Porosity in this layer increases with decrease in NiMnSb film thickness. These morphological changes of the ultra thin films are reflected in the interesting transport and magnetic properties of these films. On the other hand, there are no influences of compositional in-homogeneity and surface/interface roughness on the magnetic and transport properti…
Porous polymeric covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been under intense synthetic investigation with over 100 unique structural motifs known. In order to realize the true potential of these materials, converting the powders into thin films with strict control of thickness and morphology is necessary and accomplished through techniques including interfacial synthesis, chemical exfoliation and mechanical delamination. Recent progress in the construction and tailored properties of thin film COFs are highlighted in this review, addressing mechanical properties as well as application-focused pr…
