We introduce a new family of special functions, namely $q$-Charlier multiple orthogonal polynomials. These polynomials are orthogonal with respect to $q$-analogues of Poisson distributions. We focus our attention on their structural properties. Raising and lowering operators as well as Rodrigues-type formulas are obtained. An explicit representation in terms of a $q$-analogue of the second of Appell's hypergeometric functions is given. A high-order linear $q$-difference equation with polynomial coefficients is deduced. Moreover, we show how to obtain the nearest neighbor recurrence relation from some difference operators involved in the Rodrigues-type formula.
In this paper we prove in a constructing way that exceptional Charlier, Meixner, Hermite and Laguerre polynomials satisfy higher order recurrence relations. Our conjecture is that the recurrence relations provided in this paper have minimal order.
Using Casorati determinants of Charlier polynomials, we construct for each finite set $F$ of positive integers a sequence of polynomials $r_n^F$, $n\in σ_F$, which are eigenfunction of a second order difference operator, where $σ_F$ is an infinite set of nonnegative integers, $σ_F \varsubsetneq \NN$. For certain finite sets $F$ (we call them admissible sets), we prove that the polynomials $r_n^F$, $n\in σ_F$, are actually exceptional Charlier polynomials; that is, in addition, they are orthogonal and complete with respect to a positive measure. By passing to the limit, we transform the Casorat…
In this paper we obtain a set of polynomials which are orthogonal with respect to the classical discrete weight function of the Charlier polynomials at which an extra point mass at x=0 is added. We construct a difference operator of infinite order for which these new discrete orthogonal polynomials are eigenfunctions.
We derive Mehler--Heine type asymptotic formulas for Charlier and Meixner polynomials, and also for their associated families. These formulas provide good approximations for the polynomials in the neighborhood of $x=0,$ and determine the asymptotic limit of their zeros as the degree $n$ goes to infinity.
The aim of this paper is to derive (by using two operators, representable by a Jacobi matrix) a family of q-orthogonal polynomials, which turn to be dual to alternative q-Charlier polynomials. A discrete orthogonality relation and a three-term recurrence relation for these dual polynomials are explicitly obtained. The completeness property of dual alternative q-Charlier polynomials is also established.
We investigate multiple Charlier polynomials and in particular we will use the (nearest neighbor) recurrence relation to find the asymptotic behavior of the ratio of two multiple Charlier polynomials. This result is then used to obtain the asymptotic distribution of the zeros, which is uniform on an interval. We also deal with the case where one of the parameters of the various Poisson distributions depend on the degree of the polynomial, in which case we obtain another asymptotic distribution of the zeros.
Given a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$, an algebra of operators $\mathcal{A}$ acting in the linear space of polynomials and an operator $D_p\in \mathcal{A}$ with $D_p(p_n)=np_n$, we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of $m$ consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+\sum_{j=1}^mβ_{n,j}p_{n-j}$. Using the concept of $\mathcal{D}$-operator, we determine the structure of the sequences $β_{n,j}, j=1,\ldots,m,$ in order that the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are common eigenfunctions of an operator in the algebra $\mathcal{A}$. As an application, from the classical discret…
The aim of this article is to introduce the Kantorovich form of generalized Szasz-type operators involving Charlier polynomials with certain parameters. In this paper we discussed the rate of convergence better error estimates and Korovkin-type theorem in polynomial weighted space. Further, we investigate the local approximation results with the help of Ditzian-Totik modulus of smoothness second order modulus of continuity Peetre's K functional and Lipschitz class.
We analyze the Charlier polynomials C(n,x)and their zeros asymptotically for large n. We obtain asymptotic approximations, using the limit relation between the Krawtchouk and Charlier polynomials, involving some special functions. We give numerical examples showing the accuracy of our formulas.
We analyze the Hermite polynomials $H_{n}(ξ)$ and their zeros asymptotically as $n\to\infty,$ using the limit relation between the Charlier and Hermite polynomials. Our formulas involve some special functions and they yield very accurate approximations.
We derive uniform and non-uniform asymptotics of the Charlier polynomials by using difference equation methods alone. The Charlier polynomials are special in that they do not fit into the framework of the turning point theory, despite the fact that they are crucial in the Askey scheme. In this paper, asymptotic approximations are obtained respectively in the outside region, an intermediate region, and near the turning points. In particular, we obtain uniform asymptotic approximation at a pair of coalescing turning points with the aid of a local transformation. We also give a uniform approximat…
We analyze the asymptotic distribution of roots of Charlier polynomials with negative parameter depending linearly on the index. The roots cluster on curves in the complex plane. We determine implicit equations for these curves and deduce the limiting density of the root distribution supported on these curves. The proof is based on a determination of the limiting Cauchy transform in a specific region and a careful application of the saddle point method. The obtained result represents a solvable example of a more general open problem.
We investigate generalizations of the Charlier polynomials on the lattice $\mathbb{N}$, on the shifted lattice $\mathbb{N}+1-β$ and on the bi-lattice $\mathbb{N}\cup (\mathbb{N}+1-β)$. We show that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation for the orthogonal polynomials are related to solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation PV (which can be transformed to the third Painlevé equation). Initial conditions for different lattices can be transformed to the classical solutions of PV with special values of the parameters.
Convergent expansions are derived for three types of orthogonal polynomials: Charlier, Laguerre and Jacobi. The expansions have asymptotic properties for large values of the degree. The expansions are given in terms of functions that are special cases of the given polynomials. The method is based on expanding integrals in one or two points of the complex plane, these points being saddle points of the phase functions of the integrands.
We describe various aspects of the Al-Salam-Carlitz $q$-Charlier polynomials. These include combinatorial descriptions of the moments, the orthogonality relation, and the linearization coefficients.
We introduce some multivariate analogues of Meixner, Charlier and Krawtchouk polynomials, and establish their main properties, that is, duality, degenerate limits, generating functions, orthogonality relations, difference equations, recurrence formulas and determinant expressions. A particularly important and interesting result is that "the generating function of the generating function" for the Meixner polynomials coincides with the generating function of the Laguerre polynomials, which has previously not been known even for the one variable case. Actually, main properties for the multivariat…
A model of a q-harmonic oscillator based on q-Charlier polynomials of Al-Salam and Carlitz is discussed. Simple explicit realization of q-creation and q-annihilation operators, q-coherent states and an analog of the Fourier transformation are found. A connection of the kernel of this transform with biorthogonal rational functions is observed.
In this contribution we consider the sequence $\{Q_{n}^λ\}_{n\geq 0} $ of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to the following inner product involving differences \begin{equation*} \langle p,q\rangle _λ=\int_{0}^{\infty}p\left(x\right) q\left(x\right) dψ^{(a)}(x)+λ\,Δp(c)Δq(c), \end{equation*} where $λ\in \mathbb{R}_{+}$, $Δ$ denotes the forward difference operator defined by $Δf\left(x\right) =f\left(x+1\right) -f\left(x\right) $, $ψ^{(a)}$ with $a>0$ is the well known Poisson distribution of probability theory% \begin{equation*} dψ^{(a)}(x)=\frac{e^{-a}a^{x}}{x!}\quad \text{at}x=0,1,2,…
Following the lead of J. Dehesa and his collaborators, we compute the Fisher information of the Meixner-Pollaczek, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Charlier polynomials.
In this paper, we give a generating function for Multiple Charlier polynomials and deduce several consequences for these polynomials as invertion formula, connection formula, addition formula and recurrences relations they satisfy. Next, we introduce the notion of multiple $Δ_ω$ polynomials and prove several equivalent conditions for this class of polynomials. Also, we give a characterization theorem that if multiple $Δ_1$ polynomials are also multiple orthogonal, then they are the multiple Charlier polynomials.
The purpose of this note is to establish, from the hypergeometric-type difference equation introduced by Nikiforov and Uvarov, new tractable sufficient conditions for the monotonicity with respect to a real parameter of zeros of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. This result allows one to carry out a systematic study of the monotonicity of zeros of classical orthogonal polynomials on linear, quadratic, q-linear, and q-quadratic grids. In particular, we analyze in a simple and unified way the monotonicity of the zeros of Hahn, Charlier, Krawtchouk, Meixner, Racah, dual Hahn, q-Meixner, …
Burchnall's method to invert the Feldheim-Watson linearization formula for the Hermite polynomials is extended to all polynomial families in the Askey-scheme and its $q$-analogue. The resulting expansion formulas are made explicit for several families corresponding to measures with infinite support, including the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. An integrated version gives the possibility to give alternate expression for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified weight. This gives expansions for polynomials, such as Hermite, Laguerre, Meixner, Charlier, Meixner-Pollaczek and big $q…
In 1991 Tratnik derived two systems of multivariable orthogonal Racah polynomials and considered their limit cases. q-Extensions of these systems are derived, yielding systems of multivariable orthogonal q-Racah polynomials, from which systems of multivariable orthogonal q-Hahn, dual q-Hahn, q-Krawtchouk, q-Meixner, and q-Charlier polynomials follow as special or limit cases.
Darboux Transformation, well known in second order differential operator theory, is applied here to the difference equation satisfied by the discrete hypergeometric polynomials(Charlier, Meixner-Krawchuk, Hahn).
Let $μ_p^{(q)}$ be the q-deformed Poisson measure in the sense of Saitoh Yoshida and $ν_p$ be the measure given by Equation \eqref{eq:nu-q}. In this short paper, we introduce the q-deformed analogue of the Segal-Bargmann transform associated with $μ_p^{(q)}$. We prove that our Segal-Bargmann transform is a unitary map of $L^2(μ_p^{(q)})$ onto the q-deformed Hardy space ${\cal H}^2(ν_q)$. Moreover, we give the Segal-Bargmann representation of the multiplication operator by $x$ in $L^2(μ_p^{(q)})$, which is a linear combination of the q-creation, q-annihilation, q-number, and scalar operators.
We construct new families of discrete vector orthogonal polynomials that have the property to be eigenfunctions of some difference operator. They are extensions of Charlier, Meixner and Kravchuk polynomial systems. The ideas behind our approach lie in the studies of bispectral operators. We exploit automorphisms of associative algebras which transform elementary (vector) orthogonal polynomial systems which are eigenfunctions of a difference operator into other systems of this type. While the extension of Charlier polynomilas is well known it is obtained by different methods. The extension of M…
We investigate generalizations of the Charlier and the Meixner polynomials on the lattice N and on the shifted lattice N+1-β. We combine both lattices to obtain the bi-lattice N \cup (N+1-β) and show that the orthogonal polynomials on this bi-lattice have recurrence coefficients which satisfy a non-linear system of recurrence equations, which we can identify as a limiting case of an (asymmetric) discrete Painlevé equation.
We investigate semi-classical generalizations of the Charlier and Meixner polynomials, which are discrete orthogonal polynomials that satisfy three-term recurrence relations. It is shown that the coefficients in these recurrence relations can be expressed in terms of Wronskians of modified Bessel functions and confluent hypergeometric functions, respectively for the generalized Charlier and generalized Meixner polynomials. These Wronskians arise in the description of special function solutions of the third and fifth Painlevé equations.
We show that multiple orthogonal polynomials for r measures $(μ_1,...,μ_r)$ satisfy a system of linear recurrence relations only involving nearest neighbor multi-indices $\vec{n}\pm \vec{e}_j$, where $\vec{e}_j$ are the standard unit vectors. The recurrence coefficients are not arbitrary but satisfy a system of partial difference equations with boundary values given by the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials with each of measures $μ_j$. We show how the Christoffel-Darboux formula for multiple orthogonal polynomials can be obtained easily using this information. We give explic…
Given a basis for a polynomial ring, the coefficients in the expansion of a product of some of its elements in terms of this basis are called linearization coefficients. These coefficients have combinatorial significance for many classical families of orthogonal polynomials. Starting with a stochastic process and using the stochastic measures machinery introduced by Rota and Wallstrom, we calculate and give an interpretation of linearization coefficients for a number of polynomial families. The processes involved may have independent, freely independent or q-independent increments. The use of …
An identity involving basic Bessel functions and Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials is proved for which we recover Graf's addition formula for the Bessel function as the base $q$ tends to $1$. The corresponding product formula is derived. Some known identities for Jackson's $q$-Bessel functions are obtained as limiting cases. As special cases we prove identities for $q$-Charlier polynomials.
Given a finite set $F=\{f_1,\cdots ,f_k\}$ of nonnegative integers (written in increasing size) and a classical discrete family $(p_n)_n$ of orthogonal polynomials (Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk or Hahn), we consider the Casorati determinant $\det(p_{f_i}(x+j-1))_{i,j=1,\cdots,k}$. In this paper we prove a nice invariant property for this kind of Casorati determinants when the set $F$ is changed by $I(F)=\{0,1,2,\cdots,\max F\}\setminus \{\max F-f:f\in F\}$. This symmetry is related to the existence of higher order difference equations for the orthogonal polynomials with respect to certain Chr…
In this paper we introduce a notion of duality for matrix valued orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure supported on the nonnegative integers. We show that the dual families are closely related to certain difference operators acting on the matrix orthogonal polynomials. These operators belong to the so called Fourier algebras, which play a key role in the construction of the families. In order to illustrate duality, we describe a family of Charlier type matrix orthogonal polynomials with explicit shift operators which allow us to find explicit formulas for three term recurrences, dif…
We introduce the concept of $\D$-operators associated to a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$ and an algebra $\A$ of operators acting in the linear space of polynomials. In this paper, we show that this concept is a powerful tool to generate families of orthogonal polynomials which are eigenfunctions of a higher order difference or differential operator. Indeed, given a classical discrete family $(p_n)_n$ of orthogonal polynomials (Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk or Hahn), we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of two consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+β_np_{…
Explicit expressions for the Hahn multiple polynomials of type I, in terms of Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given. Orthogonal and biorthogonal relations are proven. Then, part of the Askey scheme for multiple orthogonal polynomials type I is completed. In particular, explicit expressions in terms of generalized hypergeometric series and Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given for the multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I for the Jacobi-Piñeiro, Meixner I, Meixner II, Kravchuk, Laguerre I, Laguerre II and Charlier families.
The classical orthogonal polynomials are usually defined by the Rodrigues' formula. This paper refers to a fractional extension of the classical Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi, Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Hahn polynomials. By means of the Caputo operator of fractional calculus, C-Hermite, C-Laguerre, C-Legndre and the C-Jacobi functions are defined and their representation in terms of the hypergeometric functions are provided. Also, by means of the Gray and Zhang fractional difference oparator, fractional Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Hahn functions are defined and their representation in…
We give four examples of families of orthogonal polynomials for which the coefficients in the recurrence relation satisfy a discrete Painlevé equation. The first example deals with Freud weights $|x|^ρ\exp(-|x|^m)$ on the real line, and we repeat Freud's derivation and analysis for the cases $m=2,4,6$. The Freud equations for the recurrence coefficients when $m=4$ corresponds to the discrete Painlevé I equation. The second example deals with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle for the weight $\exp(λ\cos θ)$. These orthogonal polynomials are important in the theory of random unitary matri…
This is the second part of the project `unified theory of classical orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable derived from the eigenvalue problems of hermitian matrices.' In a previous paper, orthogonal polynomials having Jackson integral measures were not included, since such measures cannot be obtained from single infinite dimensional hermitian matrices. Here we show that Jackson integral measures for the polynomials of the big $q$-Jacobi family are the consequence of the recovery of self-adjointness of the unbounded Jacobi matrices governing the difference equations of these polynomials…
In this paper we give a characterization of some classical q-orthogonal polynomials in terms of a difference property of the associated Stieltjes function, i.e this function solves a first order non-homogeneous q-difference equation. The solutions of the aforementioned q-difference equation (given in terms of hypergeometric series) for some canonical cases, namely, q-Charlier, q-Kravchuk, q-Meixner and q-Hahn are worked out.
Szego's procedure to connect orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and orthogonal polynomials on [-1,1] is generalized to nonsymmetric measures. It generates the so-called semi-orthogonal functions on the linear space of Laurent polynomials L, and leads to a new orthogonality structure in the module LxL. This structure can be interpreted in terms of a 2x2 matrix measure on [-1,1], and semi-orthogonal functions provide the corresponding sequence of orthogonal matrix polynomials. This gives a connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and certain classes of matrix orthogona…
Given $\{P_n \}$ a sequence of monic orthogonal polynomials, we analyze their linear combinations $\{Q_n \}$with constant coefficients and fixed length $k+1$. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the orthogonality of the monic sequence $\{Q_n \}$ as well as an interesting interpretation in terms of the Jacobi matrices associated with $\{P_n \}$ and $\{Q_n \}$. Moreover, in the case $k=2$, we characterize the families $\{P_n \}$ such that the corresponding polynomials $\{Q_n \}$ are also orthogonal.
Orthogonal polynomials of two real variables can often be represented in complex variables. We explore the connection between the two types of representations and study the structural relations of complex orthogonal polynomials. The complex Hermite orthogonal polynomials and the disk polynomials are used as illustrating examples.
Orthogonal polynomials on the real line always satisfy a three-term recurrence relation. The recurrence coefficients determine a tridiagonal semi-infinite matrix (Jacobi matrix) which uniquely characterizes the orthogonal polynomials. We investigate new orthogonal polynomials by adding to the Jacobi matrix $r$ new rows and columns, so that the original Jacobi matrix is shifted downward. The $r$ new rows and columns contain $2r$ new parameters and the newly obtained orthogonal polynomials thus correspond to an upward extension of the Jacobi matrix. We give an explicit expression of the new orth…
The weak convergence of orthogonal polynomials is given under conditions on the asymptotic behaviour of the coefficients in the three-term recurrence relation. The results generalize known results and are applied to several systems of orthogonal polynomials, including orthogonal polynomials on a finite set of points.
We use generating functions to express orthogonality relations in the form of $q$-beta integrals. The integrand of such a $q$-beta integral is then used as a weight function for a new set of orthogonal or biorthogonal
Mehler-Heine asymptotics describe the behavior of orthogonal polynomials near the edges of the interval where the orthogonality measure is supported. For Jacobi polynomials and Laguerre polynomials this asymptotic behavior near the hard edge involves Bessel functions $J_α$. We show that the asymptotic behavior near the endpoint of the interval of (one of) the measures for multiple orthogonal polynomials involves a generalization of the Bessel function. The multiple orthogonal polynomials considered are Jacobi-Angelesco polynomials, Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials, multiple Laguerre polynomials, mul…
In this survey, different aspects of the theory of orthogonal polynomials of one (real or complex) variable are reviewed. Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are not discussed.
