We prove the local invertibility, up to potential fields, and stability of the geodesic X-ray transform on tensor fields of order 1 and 2 near a strictly convex boundary point, on manifolds with boundary of dimension n>=3. We also present an inversion formula. Under the condition that the manifold can be foliated with a continuous family of strictly convex surfaces, we prove a global result which also implies a lens rigidity result near such a metric. The class of manifolds satisfying the foliation condition includes manifolds with no focal points, and does not exclude existence of conjugate points.
Consider a Riemannian manifold in dimension $n\geq 3$ with strictly convex boundary. We prove the local invertibility, up to potential fields, of the geodesic ray transform on tensor fields of rank four near a boundary point. This problem is closely related with elastic \textit{qP}-wave tomography. Under the condition that the manifold can be foliated with a continuous family of strictly convex hypersurfaces, the local invertibility implies a global result. One can straightforwardedly adapt the proof to show similar results for tensor fields of arbitrary rank.
We present two range characterizations for the attenuated geodesic X-ray transform defined on pairs of functions and one-forms on simple surfaces. Such characterizations are based on first isolating the range over sums of functions and one-forms, then separating each sub-range in two ways, first by implicit conditions, second by deriving new inversion formulas for sums of functions and one-forms.
In this short paper we introduce a variant of the approach to inverting the X-ray transform that originated in the author's work with Uhlmann. The new method is based on semiclassical analysis and eliminates the need for using sufficiently small domains and layer stripping for obtaining the injectivity and stability results, assuming natural geometric conditions are satisfied.
This article deals with stability issues related to geodesic X-ray transforms, where an interplay between the (attenuation type) weight in the transform and the underlying geometry strongly impact whether the problem is stable or unstable. In the unstable case, we also explain what types of artifacts are expected in terms of the underlying conjugate points and the microlocal weights at those points. We show in particular that the well-known iterative reconstruction Landweber algorithm cannot provide accurate reconstruction when the problem is unstable, though the artifacts generated, specific …
We derive reconstruction formulas for a family of geodesic ray transforms with connection, defined on simple Riemannian surfaces. Such formulas provide injectivity of such all transforms in a neighbourhood of constant curvature metrics and non-unitary connections with curvature close to zero. If certain Fredholm equations are injective in the absence of connection, then for any smooth enough connection multiplied by a complex parameter, the corresponding transform is injective for all values of that parameter outside a discrete set. Range characterizations are also provided, as well as numeric…
We derive explicit reconstruction formulas for the attenuated geodesic X-ray transform over functions and, in the case of non-vanishing attenuation, vector fields, on a class of simple Riemannian surfaces with boundary. These formulas partly rely on new explicit approaches to construct continuous right-inverses for backprojection operators (and, in turn, holomorphic integrating factors), which were previously unavailable in a systematic form. The reconstruction of functions is presented in two ways, the latter one being motivated by numerical considerations and successfully implemented at the …
We establish an equivalence principle between the solenoidal injectivity of the geodesic ray transform acting on symmetric $m$-tensors and the existence of invariant distributions or smooth first integrals with prescribed projection over the set of solenoidal $m$-tensors. We work with compact simple manifolds, but several of our results apply to non-trapping manifolds with strictly convex boundary.
We study the problem of proper discretizing and sampling issues related to geodesic X-ray transforms on simple surfaces, and illustrate the theory on simple geodesic disks of constant curvature. Given a notion of band limit on a function, we provide the minimal sampling rates of its X-ray transform for a faithful reconstruction. In Cartesian sampling, we quantify the quality of a sampling scheme depending on geometric parameters of the surface (e.g. curvature and boundary curvature), and the coordinate system used to represent the space of geodesics. When aliasing happens, we explain how to pr…
In this article we introduce an approach for studying the geodesic X-ray transform and related geometric inverse problems by using Carleman estimates. The main result states that on compact negatively curved manifolds (resp. nonpositively curved simple or Anosov manifolds), the geodesic vector field satisfies a Carleman estimate with logarithmic weights (resp. linear weights) on the frequency side. As a particular consequence, on negatively curved simple manifolds the geodesic X-ray transform with attenuation given by a general connection and Higgs field is invertible modulo natural obstructio…
We prove two injectivity theorems for the geodesic ray transform on two-dimensional, complete, simply connected Riemannian manifolds with non-positive Gaussian curvature, also known as Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. The first theorem is concerned with bounded non-positive curvature and the second with decaying non-positive curvature.
For a one-parameter family of simple metrics of constant curvature ($4κ$ for $κ\in (-1,1)$) on the unit disk $M$, we first make explicit the Pestov-Uhlmann range characterization of the geodesic X-ray transform, by constructing a basis of functions making up its range and co-kernel. Such a range characterization also translates into moment conditions {\it à la} Helgason-Ludwig or Gel'fand-Graev. We then derive an explicit Singular Value Decomposition for the geodesic X-ray transform. Computations dictate a specific choice of weighted $L^2-L^2$ setting which is equivalent to the $L^2(M, dVol_κ)…
On simple geodesic disks of constant curvature, we derive new functional relations for the geodesic X-ray transform, involving a certain class of elliptic differential operators whose ellipticity degenerates normally at the boundary. We then use these relations to derive sharp mapping properties for the X-ray transform and its corresponding normal operator. Finally, we discuss the possibility of theoretically rigorous regularized inversions for the X-ray transform when defined on such manifolds.
We show injectivity of the geodesic X-ray transform on piecewise constant functions when the transform is weighted by a continuous matrix weight. The manifold is assumed to be compact and nontrapping of any dimension, and in dimension three and higher we assume a foliation condition. We make no assumption regarding conjugate points or differentiability of the weight. This extends recent results for unweighted transforms.
We show that the existence of a function in $L^{1}$ with constant geodesic X-ray transform imposes geometrical restrictions on the manifold. The boundary of the manifold has to be umbilical and in the case of a strictly convex Euclidean domain, it must be a ball. Functions with constant geodesic X-ray transform always exist on manifolds with rotational symmetry.
We study the problem of recovering a function on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold from its integrals over all null geodesics in three geometries: pseudo-Riemannian products of Riemannian manifolds, Minkowski spaces and tori. We give proofs of uniqueness anc characterize non-uniqueness in different settings. Reconstruction is sometimes possible if the signature $(n_1,n_2)$ satisfies $n_1\geq1$ and $n_2\geq2$ or vice versa and always when $n_1,n_2\geq2$. The proofs are based on a Pestov identity adapted to null geodesics (product manifolds) and Fourier analysis (other geometries). The problem in a M…
We show that the geodesic ray transform is injective on scalar functions on spherically symmetric reversible Finsler manifolds where the Finsler norm satisfies a Herglotz condition. We use angular Fourier series to reduce the injectivity problem to the invertibility of generalized Abel transforms and by Taylor expansions of geodesics we show that these Abel transforms are injective. Our result has applications in linearized boundary rigidity problem on Finsler manifolds and especially in linearized elastic travel time tomography.
We prove a sharp $L^2\to H^{1/2}$ stability estimate for the geodesic X-ray transform of tensor fields of order $0$, $1$ and $2$ on a simple Riemannian manifold with a suitable chosen $H^{1/2}$ norm. We show that such an estimate holds for a family of such $H^{1/2}$ norms, not topologically equivalent, but equivalent on the range of the transform. The reason for this is that the geodesic X-ray transform has a microlocally structured range.
Consider a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ with strictly convex boundary, such that the manifold admits a strictly convex function. We show that the attenuated ray transform in the presence of an arbitrary connection and Higgs field is injective modulo the natural obstruction for functions and one-forms. We also show that the connection and the Higgs field are uniquely determined by the scattering relation modulo gauge transformations. The proofs involve a reduction to a local result showing that the geodesic X-ray transform with a matrix weight can be inverted locally near a…
We prove injectivity and a support theorem for the X-ray transform on $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups with many totally geodesic $2$-dimensional flats. The result follows from a general reduction principle for manifolds with uniformly escaping geodesics.
We complete the microlocal study of the geodesic X-ray transform on Riemannian manifolds with Anosov geodesic flow initiated by Guillarmou and pursued by Guillarmou and the second author. We prove new stability estimates and clarify some properties of the operator $Π_m$, the generalized X-ray transform. These estimates rely on a refined version of the Livsic theorem for Anosov flows, especially on a new quantitative finite time Livsic theorem.
In this paper we analyze the local and global boundary rigidity problem for general Riemannian manifolds with boundary $(M,g)$. We show that the boundary distance function, i.e., $d_g|_{\partial M\times\partial M}$, known near a point $p\in \partial M$ at which $\partial M$ is strictly convex, determines $g$ in a suitable neighborhood of $p$ in $M$, up to the natural diffeomorphism invariance of the problem. We also consider the closely related lens rigidity problem which is a more natural formulation if the boundary distance is not realized by unique minimizing geodesics. The lens relation me…
We prove that a surface carries a hexagonal 3-web of geodesics if and only if the geodesic flow on the surface admits a cubic first integral and show that the system of partial differential equations, governing metrics on such surfaces, is integrable by generalized hodograph transform method. We present some new local examples of such metrics, discuss known ones, and establish an analogue of the celebrated Graf and Sauer Theorem for Darboux superintegrable metrics.
Let (M, g) be a simple, real analytic, Riemannian manifold with boundary and of dimension n>=3. In this work, we prove a support theorem for the transverse ray transform of tensor fields of rank 2 defined over such manifolds. More specifically, given a symmetric tensor field f of rank 2, we show that if the transverse ray transform of f vanishes over an appropriate open set of maximal geodesics of M , then the support of f vanishes on the points of M that lie on the union of the aforementioned open set of geodesics.
Given a Riemmanian manifold, we provide a new method to compute a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the Dirichlet problem on a geodesic ball of radius less than the injectivity radius of the manifold. This upper bound is obtained by transforming the metric tensor into a rotationally symmetric metric tensor that preserves the area of the geodesic spheres. The provided upper bound can be computed using only the area function of the geodesic spheres contained in the geodesic ball and it is sharp in the sense that the first eigenvalue of geodesic ball coincides with o…
A geodesic circle in Finsler geometry is a natural extension of that in a Euclidean space. In this paper, we apply Lie derivatives and the Cartan $Y$-connection to study geodesic circles and (infinitesimal) concircular transformations on a Finsler manifold. We characterize a concircular vector field with some PDEs on the tangent bundle, and then we obtain respective necessary and sufficient conditions for a concircular vector field to be conformal and a conformal vector field to be concircular. We also show conditions for two conformally related Finsler metrics to be concircular, and obtain so…
Let $M$ be a smooth manifold and $\mathcal{S}$ a semi-spray defined on a sub-bundle $\mathcal{C}$ of the tangent bundle $TM$. In this work it is proved that the only non-trivial $k$-jet approximation to the exact geodesic deviation equation of $\mathcal{S}$, linear on the deviation functions and invariant under an specific class of local coordinate transformations is the Jacobi equation. However, if the linearity property on the dependence in the deviation functions is not imposed, then there are differential equations whose solutions admit $k$-jet approximations and are invariant under arbitr…
