VB-groupoids can be thought of as vector bundle objects in the category of Lie groupoids. Just as Lie algebroids are the infinitesimal counterparts of Lie groupoids, VB-algebroids correspond to the infinitesimal version of VB-groupoids. In this work we address the problem of the existence of a VB-groupoid admitting a given VB-algebroid as its infinitesimal data. Our main result is an explicit characterization of the obstructions appearing in this integrability problem as the vanishing of the spherical periods of certain cohomology classes. Along the way, we illustrate our result in concrete examples. Finally, as a corollary, we obtain computable obstructions for a $2$-term representation up to homotopy of Lie algebroid to arise as the infinitesimal counterpart of a smooth such representation of a Lie groupoid.
We give a new proof of the equivalence between the existence of a complete action of a Lie algebroid on a surjective submersion and its integrability. The main tools in our approach are double Lie groupoids and multiplicative foliations, our proof relies on a simple characterization of those vacant double Lie groupoids which induce a Lie groupoid structure on their orbit spaces.
We present a characterization, in terms of torsion-free generalized connections, for the integrability of various generalized structures (generalized almost complex structures, generalized almost hypercomplex structures, generalized almost Hermitian structures and generalized almost hyper-Hermitian structures) defined on Courant algebroids. We develop a new, self-contained, approach for the theory of Dirac generating operators on regular Courant algebroids with scalar product of neutral signature. As an application we provide a criterion for the integrability of generalized almost Hermitian st…
We show that the integrability obstruction of a transitive Lie algebroid coincides with the lifting obstruction of a crossed module of groupoids associated naturally with the given algebroid. Then we extend this result to general extensions of integrable transitive Lie algebroids by Lie algebra bundles. Such a lifting obstruction is directly related with the classification of extensions of transitive Lie groupoids. We also give a classification of such extensions which differentiates to the classification of transitive Lie algebroids discussed in \cite{KCHM:new}.
Several types of generically-nondegenerate Poisson structures can be effectively studied as symplectic structures on naturally associated Lie algebroids. Relevant examples of this phenomenon include log-, elliptic, $b^k$-, scattering and elliptic-log Poisson structures. In this paper we discuss topological obstructions to the existence of such Poisson structures, obtained through the characteristic classes of their associated symplectic Lie algebroids. In particular we obtain the full obstructions for surfaces to carry such Poisson structures.
This paper considers the Pontryagin characters of graded vector bundles of finite rank, in the cohomology vector spaces of a Lie algebroid over the same base. These Pontryagin characters vanish if the graded vector bundle carries a representation up to homotopy of the Lie algebroid. As a consequence, this gives a strong obstruction to the existence of a representation up to homotopy on a graded vector bundle of finite rank. In particular, if a graded vector bundle $E[0]\oplus F[1]\to M$ carries a $2$-term representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid $A\to M$, then all the (classical) $A$-P…
The preprint is prepared as description of results that were obtained during joint scientific project No: 71NC /2015/VNCCCT on the VIASM (Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics) from 08.12.2015 to 06.02.2016. The problem was formulated how to calculate so called the Mackenzie obstruction for existing of transitive Lie algebroid for given coupling between a finite dimensional Lie algebra and the tangent bundle of a smooth manifold. It is proved that the Mackenzie obstruction for transitive Lie algebroids is trivial for the finite dimensional Lie algebra which is the direct sum of t…
Inspired by the work of Molino, we show that the integrability obstruction for transitive Lie algebroids can be made to vanish by adding extra dimensions. In particular, we prove that the Weinstein groupoid of a non-integrable transitive and abelian Lie algebroid, is the quotient of a finite dimensional Lie groupoid. Two constructions as such are given: First, explaining the counterexample to integrability given by Almeida and Molino, we see that it can be generalized to the construction of an "Almeida-Molino" integrable lift when the base manifold is simply connected. On the other hand, we no…
We provide a complete solution to the problem of extending a local Lie groupoid to a global Lie groupoid. First, we show that the classical Mal'cev's theorem, which characterizes local Lie groups that can be extended to global Lie groups, also holds in the groupoid setting. Next, we describe a construction that can be used to obtain any local Lie groupoid with integrable algebroid. Last, our main result establishes a precise relationship between the integrability of a Lie algebroid and the failure in associativity of a local integration. We give a simplicial interpretation of this result showi…
We survey recent results on the local and global integrability of a Lie algebroid, as well as the integrability of infinitesimal multiplicative geometric structures on it.
The classical theory of $G$-structures, which include almost-complex structures, explains the relationship between the curvature of compatible connections and integrability. This note is an effort to understand how the curvature of Riemannian metrics can obstruct the integrability of almost-complex structures. It is shown that certain special complex structures cannot coexist with non-flat constant curvature metrics, and a formal variational realization of these structures is provided. The approach followed here is direct, meaning that it bypasses the classical theory. The idea is to find obst…
We prove that a holomorphic Lie algebroid is integrable if, and only if, its underlying real Lie algebroid is integrable. Thus the integrability criteria of Crainic-Fernandes do also apply in the holomorphic context without any modification. As a consequence we give another proof of the following theorem: a holomorphic Poisson manifold is integrable if, and only if, its real (or imaginary) part is integrable as a real Poisson manifold.
This paper concerns the problem of integrability of non closed distributions on Banach manifolds. We introduce the notion of weak distribution and we look for conditions under which these distributions admit weak integral submanifolds. We give some applications to Banach Lie algebroid and Banach Lie-Poisson manifold. The main results of this paper generalize the works presented in [ChSt], [Nu] and [Gl].
We introduce Riemannian Lie algebroids as a generalization of Riemannian manifolds and we show that most of the classical tools and results known in Riemannian geometry can be stated in this setting. We give also some new results on the integrability of Riemannian Lie algebroids.
We use foliations and connections on principal Lie groupoid bundles to prove various integrability results for Lie algebroids. In particular, we show, under quite general assumptions, that the semi-direct product associated to an infinitesimal action of one integrable Lie algebroid on another is integrable. This generalizes recent results of Dazord and Nistor.
We study the question of the integrability of Einstein deformations and relate it to the question of the desingularization of Einstein metrics. Our main application is a negative answer to the long-standing question of whether or not every Einstein $4$-orbifold (which is an Einstein metric space in a synthetic sense) is limit of smooth Einstein $4$-manifolds. We more precisely show that spherical and hyperbolic $4$-orbifolds with the simplest singularities cannot be Gromov-Hausdorff limits of smooth Einstein $4$-metrics without relying on previous integrability assumptions. For this, we analyz…
We give an integrability criterion for a projective limit of Banach distributions on a Fréchet manifold which is a projective limit of Banach manifolds. This leads to a result of integrability of projective limit of involutive bundles on a projective sequence of Banach manifolds. This can be seen as a version of Frobenius Theorem in Fréchet setting. As consequence, we obtain a version of the third Lie theorem for a Fréchet-Lie group which is a submersive projective limit of Banach Lie groups. We also give an application to a sequence of prolongations of a Banach Lie algebroid.
We show that the path construction integration of Lie algebroids by Lie groupoids is an actual equivalence from the category of integrable Lie algebroids and complete Lie algebroid comorphisms to the category of source 1-connected Lie groupoids and Lie groupoid comorphisms. This allows us to construct an actual symplectization functor in Poisson geometry. We include examples to show that the integrability of comorphisms and Poisson maps may not hold in the absence of a completeness assumption.
Let G be a connected Lie group, LG its loop group, and PG->G the principal LG-bundle defined by quasi-periodic paths in G. This paper is devoted to differential geometry of the Atiyah algebroid A=T(PG)/LG of this bundle. Given a symmetric bilinear form on the Lie algebra g and the corresponding central extension of Lg, we consider the lifting problem for A, and show how the cohomology class of the Cartan 3-form on G arises as an obstruction. This involves the construction of a 2-form on PG with differential the pull-back of the Cartan form. In the second part of this paper we obtain similar LG…
We provide a framework for extensions of Lie algebroids, including non-abelian extensions and Lie algebroids over different bases. Our approach involves Ehresmann connections, which allows straight generalizations of classical constructions. We exhibit a filtration in cohomology and explain the associated spectral sequence. We also give a description of the groupoid integrating an extension in case a complete connection can be fixed. The problem of integrability is also studied.
The natural bundle $π:E\to M$ of almost-complex structures is considered. The action of the pseudogroup of all diffeomorphisms of $M$ on the total space $E$ is investigated. A nontrivial 1-st order differential invariant of this action is constructed. It is proved that the Nijenhuise tensor of an almost-complex structures is equal to zero iff the constructed invariant for this structure is zero.
Lie theory for the integration of Lie algebroids to Lie groupoids, on the one hand, and of Poisson manifolds to symplectic groupoids, on the other, has undergone tremendous developements in the last decade, thanks to the work of Mackenzie-Xu, Moerdijk-Mrcun, Cattaneo-Felder and Crainic-Fernandes, among others. In this thesis we study - part of - the categorified version of this story, namely the integrability of LA-groupoids (groupoid objects in the category of Lie algebroids), to double Lie groupoids (groupoid objects in the category of Lie groupoids) providing a first set of sufficient condi…
The projective metrizability problem can be formulated as follows: under what conditions the geodesics of a given spray coincide with the geodesics of some Finsler space, as oriented curves. In Theorem 3.8 we reformulate the projective metrizability problem for a spray in terms of a first-order partial differential operator $P_1$ and a set of algebraic conditions on semi-basic 1-forms. We discuss the formal integrability of $P_1$ using two sufficient conditions provided by Cartan-Kähler theorem. We prove in Theorem 4.2 that the symbol of $P_1$ is involutive and hence one of the two conditions …
In this paper, we show that the Jacobiator $J$ of a pre-Courant algebroid is closed naturally. The corresponding equivalence class $[J^\flat]$ is defined as the Pontryagin class, which is the obstruction of a pre-Courant algebroid to be deformed into a Courant algebroid. We construct a Leibniz 2-algebra and a Lie 2-algebra associated to a pre-Courant algebroid and prove that these algebraic structures are isomorphic under deformations. Finally, we introduce the twisted action of a Lie algebra on a manifold to give more examples of pre-Courant algebroids, which include the Cartan geometry.
A multiplicatively closed, horizontal $n$-plane field $D$ on a Lie groupoid $G$ over $M$ generalizes to intransitive geometry the classical notion of a Cartan connection. The infinitesimalization of the connection $D$ is a Cartan connection $\nabla $ on the Lie algebroid of $G$, a notion already studied elsewhere by the author. It is shown that $\nabla $ may be regarded as infinitesimal parallel translation in the groupoid $G$ along $D$. From this follows a proof that $D$ defines a pseudoaction generating a pseudogroup of transformations on $M$ precisely when the curvature of $\nabla $ vanishe…
A degree 1 non-negative graded super manifold equipped with a degree 1 vector field Q satisfying [Q, Q]=1, namely a so-called NQ-1 manifold is, in plain differential geometry language, a Lie algebroid. We introduce a notion of fibration for such super manifols, that essentially involves a complete Ehresmann connection. As it is the case for Lie algebras, such fibrations turn out not to be just locally trivial products. We also define homotopy groups and prove the expected long exact sequence associated to a fibration. In particular, Crainic and Fernandes's obstruction to the integrability of L…
We study pairs of structures, such as the Poisson-Nijenhuis structures, on the tangent bundle of a manifold or, more generally, on a Lie algebroid or a Courant algebroid. These composite structures are defined by two of the following, a closed 2-form, a Poisson bivector or a Nijenhuis tensor, with suitable compatibility assumptions. We establish the relationships between such composite structures. We then show that the non-degenerate Monge-Ampère structures on 2-dimensional manifolds satisfying an integrability condition provide numerous examples of such structures, while in the case of 3-dime…
In this paper, first we give a detailed study on the structure of a transitive Lie 2-algebroid and describe a transitive Lie 2-algebroid using a morphism from the tangent Lie algebroid TM to a strict Lie 3-algebroid constructed from derivations. Then we introduce the notion of a quadratic Lie 2-algebroid and define its first Pontryagin class, which is a cohomology class in H^5(M). Associated to a CLWX 2-algebroid, there is a quadratic Lie 2-algebroid naturally. Conversely, we show that the first Pontryagin class of a quadratic Lie 2-algebroid is the obstruction class of the existence of a CLWX…
Let G be a Lie groupoid with Lie algebroid g. It is known that, unlike in the case of Lie groups, not every subalgebroid of g can be integrated by a subgroupoid of G. In this paper we study conditions on the invariant foliation defined by a given subalgebroid under which such an integration is possible. We also consider the problem of integrability by closed subgroupoids, and we give conditions under which the closure of a subgroupoid is again a subgroupoid.
Let $p$ be a Lie subalgebra of a semisimple Lie algebra $g$ and $(G,P)$ be the corresponding pair of connected Lie groups. A Cartan geometry of type $(G,P)$ associates to a smooth manifold $M$ a principal $P$-bundle and a Cartan connection, and a parabolic geometry is a Cartan geometry where $P$ is parabolic. We show that if $P$ is parabolic, the adjoint tractor bundle of a Cartan geometry, which is isomorphic to the Atiyah algebroid of the principal $P$-bundle, admits the structure of a (pre-)Courant algebroid, and we identify the topological obstruction to the bracket being a Courant bracket…
A general model for geometric structures on differentiable manifolds is obtained by deforming infinitesimal symmetries. Specifically, this model consists of a Lie algebroid, equipped with an affine connection compatible with the Lie algebroid structure. The curvature of this connection vanishes precisely when the structure is locally symmetric. This model generalizes Cartan geometries, a substantial class, to the intransitive case. Simple examples are surveyed and corresponding local obstructions to symmetry are identified. These examples include foliations, Riemannian structures, infinitesima…
In this paper we present the solution to a longstanding problem of differential geometry: Lie's third theorem for Lie algebroids. We show that the integrability problem is controlled by two computable obstructions. As applications we derive, explain and improve the known integrability results, we establish integrability by local Lie groupoids, we clarify the smoothness of the Poisson sigma-model for Poisson manifolds, and we describe other geometrical applications.
In this paper, an obstruction against the integrability of certain infinitesimal solitonic deformations is given. Using this obstruction, we show that the complex projective spaces of even complex dimension are rigid as Ricci solitons although they have infinitesimal solitonic deformations.
In this thesis we study geometric structures from Poisson and generalized complex geometry with mild singular behavior using Lie algebroids. The process of lifting such structures to their Lie algebroid version makes them less singular, as their singular behavior is incorporated in the anchor of the Lie algebroid. We develop a framework for this using the concept of a divisor, which encodes the singularities, and show when structures exhibiting such singularities can be lifted to a Lie algebroid built out of the divisor. Once one has successfully lifted the structure, it becomes possible to st…
We show that various notions of integrability for Poisson brackets are all equivalent, and we give the precise obstructions to integrating Poisson manifolds. We describe the integration as a symplectic quotient, in the spirit of the Poisson sigma-model of Cattaneo and Felder. For regular Poisson manifolds we express the obstructions in terms of variations of symplectic areas. As an application of these results, we show that a Poisson manifold admits a complete symplectic realization if, and only if, it is integrable. We discuss also the integration of submanifolds and Morita equivalence of Poi…

We address the integrability conditions of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for time-dependent SODE using the Spencer version of the Cartan-Kähler theorem. We consider a linear partial differential operator $P$ given by the two Helmholtz conditions expressed in terms of semi-basic 1-forms and study its formal integrability. We prove that $P$ is involutive and there is only one obstruction for the formal integrability of this operator. The obstruction is expressed in terms of the curvature tensor $R$ of the induced nonlinear connection. We recover some of the classes of Lagrang…
This paper examines a proposal for gauging non-linear sigma models with respect to a Lie algebroid action. The general conditions for gauging a non-linear sigma model with a set of involutive vector fields are given. We show that it is always possible to find a set of vector fields which will (locally) admit a Lie algebroid gauging. Furthermore, the gauging process is not unique; if the vector fields span the tangent space of the manifold, there is a free choice of a flat connection. Ensuring that the gauged action is equivalent to the ungauged action imposes the real constraint of the Lie alg…
We discuss the integrability of Jacobi manifolds by contact groupoids, and then look at what the Jacobi point of view brings new into Poisson geometry. In particular, using contact groupoids, we prove a Kostant-type theorem on the prequantization of symplectic groupoids, which answers a question posed by Weinstein and Xu \cite{prequan}. The methods used are those of Crainic-Fernandes on $A$-paths and monodromy group(oid)s of algebroids. In particular, most of the results we obtain are valid also in the non-integrable case.
Let G be a Lie group acting by diffeomorphisms on a manifold M and consider the image of T[1]G and T[1]M, of G and M respectively, in the category of differential graded manifolds. We show that the obstruction to lift the action of T[1]G on T[1]M to an action on a R[n]-bundle over T[1]M is measured by the G equivariant cohomology of M. We explicitly calculate the differential graded Lie algebra of the symmetries of the R[n]-bundle over T[1]M and we use this differential graded Lie algebra to understand which actions are hamiltonian. We show how split Exact Courant algebroids could be obtained …
This thesis treats two main topics: calibrated symplectic foliations, and local Lie groupoids. Calibrated symplectic foliations are one possible generalization of taut foliations of 3-manifolds to higher dimensions. Their study has been popular in recent years, and we collect several interesting results. We then show how de Rham's theory of currents, and Sullivan's theory of structure currents, can be applied in trying to understand the calibratability of symplectic foliations. Our study of local Lie groupoids begins with their definition and an exploration of some of their basic properties. N…
A Dirac structure is a Lagrangian subbundle of a Courant algebroid, $L\subset\mathbb{E}$, which is involutive with respect to the Courant bracket. In particular, $L$ inherits the structure of a Lie algebroid. In this paper, we introduce the more general notion of a pseudo-Dirac structure: an arbitrary subbundle, $W\subset\mathbb{E}$, together with a pseudo-connection on its sections, satisfying a natural integrability condition. As a consequence of the definition, $W$ will be a Lie algebroid. Allowing non-isotropic subbundles of $\mathbb{E}$ incorporates non-skew tensors and connections into D…
Given a Lie algebroid we discuss the existence of a smooth abelian integration of its abelianization. We show that the obstructions are related to the extended monodromy groups introduced recently in \cite{CFMb}. We also show that this groupoid can be obtained by a path-space construction, similar to the Weinstein groupoid of \cite{CF1}, but where the underlying homotopies are now supported in surfaces with arbitrary genus. As an application, we show that the prequantization condition for a (possibly non-simply connected) manifold is equivalent to the smoothness of an abelian integration. Our …
We start by describing the relationship between the classical prequantization condition and the integrability of a certain Lie algebroid associated to the problem and use this to give a global construction of the prequantizing bundle in terms of path spaces (Introduction), then we rephrase the problem in terms of groupoids (second section), and then we study the more general problem of prequantizing groupoids endowed with a multiplicative 2-forms (the rest of the paper).
