Lie theory for the integration of Lie algebroids to Lie groupoids, on the one hand, and of Poisson manifolds to symplectic groupoids, on the other, has undergone tremendous developements in the last decade, thanks to the work of Mackenzie-Xu, Moerdijk-Mrcun, Cattaneo-Felder and Crainic-Fernandes, among others. In this thesis we study - part of - the categorified version of this story, namely the integrability of LA-groupoids (groupoid objects in the category of Lie algebroids), to double Lie groupoids (groupoid objects in the category of Lie groupoids) providing a first set of sufficient conditions for the integration to be possible. Mackenzie's double Lie structures arise naturally from lifting processes, such as the cotangent lift or the path prolongation, on ordinary Lie theoretic and Poisson geometric objects and we use them to study the integrability of quotient Poisson bivector fields, the relation between "local" and "global" duality of Poisson groupoids and Lie theory for Lie bialgebroids and Poisson groupoids.
A Jet groupoid R_q over a manifold X is a special Lie groupoid consisting of q-jets of local diffeomorphisms from X to X. As a subbundle of the q-th order jet bundle of the trivial bundle X times X, a jet groupoid can be considered as a nonlinear system of partial differential equations (PDE). This leads to the concept of formal integrability. On the other hand, each jet groupoid is the symmetry groupoid of a geometric object, modelled as a section of a natural bundle. Using the jet groupoids, we give a local characterisation of formal integrability for transitive jet groupoids in terms of the…
A multiplicatively closed, horizontal $n$-plane field $D$ on a Lie groupoid $G$ over $M$ generalizes to intransitive geometry the classical notion of a Cartan connection. The infinitesimalization of the connection $D$ is a Cartan connection $\nabla $ on the Lie algebroid of $G$, a notion already studied elsewhere by the author. It is shown that $\nabla $ may be regarded as infinitesimal parallel translation in the groupoid $G$ along $D$. From this follows a proof that $D$ defines a pseudoaction generating a pseudogroup of transformations on $M$ precisely when the curvature of $\nabla $ vanishe…
VB-groupoids can be thought of as vector bundle objects in the category of Lie groupoids. Just as Lie algebroids are the infinitesimal counterparts of Lie groupoids, VB-algebroids correspond to the infinitesimal version of VB-groupoids. In this work we address the problem of the existence of a VB-groupoid admitting a given VB-algebroid as its infinitesimal data. Our main result is an explicit characterization of the obstructions appearing in this integrability problem as the vanishing of the spherical periods of certain cohomology classes. Along the way, we illustrate our result in concrete ex…
We give a new proof of the equivalence between the existence of a complete action of a Lie algebroid on a surjective submersion and its integrability. The main tools in our approach are double Lie groupoids and multiplicative foliations, our proof relies on a simple characterization of those vacant double Lie groupoids which induce a Lie groupoid structure on their orbit spaces.
We provide a complete solution to the problem of extending a local Lie groupoid to a global Lie groupoid. First, we show that the classical Mal'cev's theorem, which characterizes local Lie groups that can be extended to global Lie groups, also holds in the groupoid setting. Next, we describe a construction that can be used to obtain any local Lie groupoid with integrable algebroid. Last, our main result establishes a precise relationship between the integrability of a Lie algebroid and the failure in associativity of a local integration. We give a simplicial interpretation of this result showi…
In this paper we study Poisson actions of complete Poisson groups, without any connectivity assumption or requiring the existence of a momentum map. For any complete Poisson group $G$ with dual $G^\star$ we obtain a suitably connected integrating symplectic double groupoid $\calS$. As a consequence, the cotangent lift of a Poisson action on an integrable Poisson manifold $P$ can be integrated to a Poisson action of the symplectic groupoid $\poidd{\calS}{G^\star}$ on the symplectic groupoid for $P$. Finally, we show that the quotient Poisson manifold $P/G$ is also integrable, giving an explicit…
We show that the integrability obstruction of a transitive Lie algebroid coincides with the lifting obstruction of a crossed module of groupoids associated naturally with the given algebroid. Then we extend this result to general extensions of integrable transitive Lie algebroids by Lie algebra bundles. Such a lifting obstruction is directly related with the classification of extensions of transitive Lie groupoids. We also give a classification of such extensions which differentiates to the classification of transitive Lie algebroids discussed in \cite{KCHM:new}.
We discuss the integrability of Jacobi manifolds by contact groupoids, and then look at what the Jacobi point of view brings new into Poisson geometry. In particular, using contact groupoids, we prove a Kostant-type theorem on the prequantization of symplectic groupoids, which answers a question posed by Weinstein and Xu \cite{prequan}. The methods used are those of Crainic-Fernandes on $A$-paths and monodromy group(oid)s of algebroids. In particular, most of the results we obtain are valid also in the non-integrable case.
We study the integrability of Poisson and Dirac structures that arise from quotient constructions. From our results we deduce several classical results as well as new applications. We also give explicit constructions of Lie groupoids integrating two interesting families of geometric structures: (i) a special class of Poisson homogeneous spaces of symplectic groupoids integrating Poisson groups and (ii) Dirac homogeneous spaces.
This work is a spin-off of an on-going programme which aims at revisiting the original studies of Lie and Cartan on pseudogroups and geometric structures from a modern perspective. We encode geometric structures induced by transitive Lie pseudogroups into principal $G$-bundles equipped with a transversally parallelisable foliation generated by a subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, called Cartan bundles. Our approach is complementary to arXiv:1911.13147 and is based on Morita equivalence of Lie groupoids. After identifying the main examples and properties, we develop a notion of flatness with respect…
In this paper, we show that there is a close relationship between generalized subtangent manifolds and Lie groupoids. We obtain equivalent assertions among the integrability conditions of generalized almost subtangent manifolds, the condition of compatibility of source and target maps of symplectic groupoids with symplectic form and generalized subtangent maps.
We establish a 1:1 correspondence between Poisson-Lie group actions on integrable Poisson manifolds and twisted multiplicative hamiltonian actions on source 1-connected symplectic groupoids. For an action of a Poisson-Lie group $G$ on a Poisson manifold $M$, we find an explicit description of the lifted hamiltonian action on the symplectic groupoid $Σ(M)$. We give applications of these results to the integration of Poisson quotients $M/G$, Lu-Weinstein quotients $μ^{-1}(e)/G$ and Poisson homogeneous spaces $G/H$.
This paper explains the fundamental relation between Jacobi structures and the classical Spencer operator coming from the theory of PDEs so as to provide a direct and geometric approach to the integrability of Jacobi structures. It uses recent results on the integrability of Spencer operators and multliplicative forms on Lie groupoids with non-trivial coefficients. In Theorem 1 we show that the Spencer operator associated to a contact groupoid reveals that the base manifold carries a Jacobi structure. Theorem 2 deals with the problem of integrating Jacobi structures to contact groupoids.
We use foliations and connections on principal Lie groupoid bundles to prove various integrability results for Lie algebroids. In particular, we show, under quite general assumptions, that the semi-direct product associated to an infinitesimal action of one integrable Lie algebroid on another is integrable. This generalizes recent results of Dazord and Nistor.
Let G be a Lie groupoid with Lie algebroid g. It is known that, unlike in the case of Lie groups, not every subalgebroid of g can be integrated by a subgroupoid of G. In this paper we study conditions on the invariant foliation defined by a given subalgebroid under which such an integration is possible. We also consider the problem of integrability by closed subgroupoids, and we give conditions under which the closure of a subgroupoid is again a subgroupoid.
In this paper we present the solution to a longstanding problem of differential geometry: Lie's third theorem for Lie algebroids. We show that the integrability problem is controlled by two computable obstructions. As applications we derive, explain and improve the known integrability results, we establish integrability by local Lie groupoids, we clarify the smoothness of the Poisson sigma-model for Poisson manifolds, and we describe other geometrical applications.
Inspired by the work of Molino, we show that the integrability obstruction for transitive Lie algebroids can be made to vanish by adding extra dimensions. In particular, we prove that the Weinstein groupoid of a non-integrable transitive and abelian Lie algebroid, is the quotient of a finite dimensional Lie groupoid. Two constructions as such are given: First, explaining the counterexample to integrability given by Almeida and Molino, we see that it can be generalized to the construction of an "Almeida-Molino" integrable lift when the base manifold is simply connected. On the other hand, we no…
This thesis treats two main topics: calibrated symplectic foliations, and local Lie groupoids. Calibrated symplectic foliations are one possible generalization of taut foliations of 3-manifolds to higher dimensions. Their study has been popular in recent years, and we collect several interesting results. We then show how de Rham's theory of currents, and Sullivan's theory of structure currents, can be applied in trying to understand the calibratability of symplectic foliations. Our study of local Lie groupoids begins with their definition and an exploration of some of their basic properties. N…
We show that the path construction integration of Lie algebroids by Lie groupoids is an actual equivalence from the category of integrable Lie algebroids and complete Lie algebroid comorphisms to the category of source 1-connected Lie groupoids and Lie groupoid comorphisms. This allows us to construct an actual symplectization functor in Poisson geometry. We include examples to show that the integrability of comorphisms and Poisson maps may not hold in the absence of a completeness assumption.
We look at Poisson geometry taking the viewpoint of singular foliations, understood as suitable submodules generated by Hamiltonian vector fields rather than partitions into (symplectic) leaves. The class of Poisson structures which behave best from this point of view, are those whose submodule generated by Hamiltonian vector fields arises from a smooth holonomy groupoid. We call them almost regular Poisson structures and determine them completely. They include regular Poisson and log symplectic manifolds, as well as several other Poisson structures whose symplectic foliation presents singular…
This paper is about the relation of the geometry of Lie groupoids over a fixed compact manifold and the geometry of their (infinite-dimensional) bisection Lie groups. In the first part of the paper we investigate the relation of the bisections to a given Lie groupoid, where the second part is about the construction of Lie groupoids from candidates for their bisection Lie groups. The procedure of this second part becomes feasible due to some recent progress in the infinite-dimensional Frobenius theorem, which we heavily exploit. The main application to the prequantisation of (pre)symplectic man…
A symplectic integration of a Poisson manifold $(M,Λ)$ is a symplectic groupoid $(Γ,η)$ which realizes the given Poisson manifold, i.e. such that the space of units $Γ_0$ with the induced Poisson structure $Λ_0$ is isomorphic to $(M,Λ)$. This notion was introduced by A. Weinstein in order to quantize Poisson manifolds by quantizing their symplectic integration. Any Poisson manifold can be integrated by a local symplectic groupoid but already for regular Poisson manifolds there are obstructions to global integrability. The aim of this paper is to summarize all the known obstructions and present…
We start by describing the relationship between the classical prequantization condition and the integrability of a certain Lie algebroid associated to the problem and use this to give a global construction of the prequantizing bundle in terms of path spaces (Introduction), then we rephrase the problem in terms of groupoids (second section), and then we study the more general problem of prequantizing groupoids endowed with a multiplicative 2-forms (the rest of the paper).
An anologue of the Calabi invariant for Poisson manifolds is considered. For any Poisson manifold $P$, the Poisson bracket on $C^{\infty}(P)$ extends to a Lie bracket on the space $Ω^{1}(P)$ of all differential one-forms, under which the space $Z^{1}(P)$ of closed one-forms and the space $B^{1}(P)$ of exact one-forms are Lie subalgebras. These Lie algebras are related by the exact sequence: $$0\lon \reals \lon C^{\infty}(P)\stackrel{d}{\lon} Z^{1}(P)\stackrel{f}{\lon} H^{1}(P, \reals)\lon 0, $$ where $H^{1}(P,\reals)$ is considered as a trivial Lie algebra, and $f$ is the map sending each clos…
We provide a framework for extensions of Lie algebroids, including non-abelian extensions and Lie algebroids over different bases. Our approach involves Ehresmann connections, which allows straight generalizations of classical constructions. We exhibit a filtration in cohomology and explain the associated spectral sequence. We also give a description of the groupoid integrating an extension in case a complete connection can be fixed. The problem of integrability is also studied.
Motivated by our attempt to recast Cartan's work on Lie pseudogroups in a more global and modern language, we are brought back to the question of understanding the linearization of multiplicative forms on groupoids and the corresponding integrability problem. From this point of view, the novelty of this paper is that we study forms with coefficients. However, the main contribution of this paper is conceptual: the finding of the relationship between multiplicative forms and Cartan's work, which provides a completely new approach to integrability theorems for multiplicative forms. Back to Cartan…
Using tools from Dirac geometry and through an explicit construction, we show that every Poisson homogeneous space of any Poisson Lie group admits an integration to a symplectic groupoid. Our theorem follows from a more general result which relates, for a principal bundle $M\to M/H$, integrations of a Dirac structure on $M/H$ to $H$-admissible integrations of its pullback Dirac structure on $M$ by pre-symplectic groupoids. Our construction gives a distinguished class of explicit real or holomorphic pre-symplectic and symplectic groupoids over semi-simple Lie groups and some of their homogeneou…
Coupling Dirac structures are Dirac structures defined on the total space of a fibration, generalizing hamiltonian fibrations from symplectic geometry, where one replaces the symplectic structure on the fibers by a Poisson structure. We study the associated Poisson gauge theory, in order to describe the presymplectic groupoid integrating coupling Dirac structures. We find the obstructions to integrability and we give explicit geometric descriptions of the integration.
A multiplicatively closed, horizontal foliation on a Lie groupoid may be viewed as a "pseudoaction" on the base manifold $M$. A pseudoaction generates a pseudogroup of transformations of $M$ in the same way an ordinary Lie group action generates a transformation group. Infinitesimalizing a pseudoaction, one obtains the action of a Lie algebra on $M$, possibly twisted. A global converse to Lie's third theorem proven here states that every twisted Lie algebra action is integrated by a pseudoaction. When the twisted Lie algebra action is complete it integrates to a twisted Lie group action, accor…
In the first section we discuss Morita invariance of differentiable/algebroid cohomology. In the second section we present an extension of the van Est isomorphism to groupoids. This immediately implies a version of Haefliger's conjecture for differentiable cohomology. As a first application we clarify the connection between differentiable and algebroid cohomology (proved in degree 1, and conjectured in degree 2 by Weinstein-Xu). As a second application we extend van Est's argument for the integrability of Lie algebras. Applied to Poisson manifolds, this immediately gives (a slight improvement …
This paper examines a proposal for gauging non-linear sigma models with respect to a Lie algebroid action. The general conditions for gauging a non-linear sigma model with a set of involutive vector fields are given. We show that it is always possible to find a set of vector fields which will (locally) admit a Lie algebroid gauging. Furthermore, the gauging process is not unique; if the vector fields span the tangent space of the manifold, there is a free choice of a flat connection. Ensuring that the gauged action is equivalent to the ungauged action imposes the real constraint of the Lie alg…
