We start by describing the relationship between the classical prequantization condition and the integrability of a certain Lie algebroid associated to the problem and use this to give a global construction of the prequantizing bundle in terms of path spaces (Introduction), then we rephrase the problem in terms of groupoids (second section), and then we study the more general problem of prequantizing groupoids endowed with a multiplicative 2-forms (the rest of the paper).
We present a geometric construction of central S^1-extensions of the quantomorphism group of a prequantizable, compact, symplectic manifold, and explicitly describe the corresponding lattice of integrable cocycles on the Poisson Lie algebra. We use this to find nontrivial central S^1-extensions of the universal cover of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. In the process, we obtain central S^1-extensions of Lie groups that act by exact strict contact transformations.
We look at generalized complex structures from the point of view of Poisson and Dirac geometry and we remark that the puzzling equations underlying the notion of generalized complex structure have miraculously simple meaning when passing to Lie algebroids/groupoids.
We introduce a new cohomology for Lie algebroids, and prove that it provides a differential graded Lie algebra which ``controls'' deformations of the structure bracket of the algebroid. We also have a closer look at various special cases such as Lie algebras, Poisson manifolds, foliations, Lie algebra actions on manifolds.
In this paper we present the solution to a longstanding problem of differential geometry: Lie's third theorem for Lie algebroids. We show that the integrability problem is controlled by two computable obstructions. As applications we derive, explain and improve the known integrability results, we establish integrability by local Lie groupoids, we clarify the smoothness of the Poisson sigma-model for Poisson manifolds, and we describe other geometrical applications.
We investigate some infinite dimensional Lie algebras and their associated Poisson structures which arise from a Lie group action on a manifold. If $G$ is a Lie group, $\g$ its Lie algebra and $M$ is a manifold on which $G$ acts, then the set of smooth maps from $M$ to $\g$ has at least two Lie algebra structures, both satisfying the required property to be a Lie algebroid. We may then apply a {construction} by Marle to obtain a Poisson bracket on the set of smooth real or complex valued functions on $M\times \g^*$. In this paper, we investigate these Poisson brackets. We show that the set of …
We show that every Lie algebra is equipped with a natural $(1,1)$-variant tensor field, the "canonical endomorphism field", naturally determined by the Lie structure, and satisfying a certain Nijenhuis bracket condition. This observation may be considered as complementary to the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau theorem on symplectic geometry of coadjoint orbits. We show its relevance for classical mechanics, in particular for Lax equations. We show that the space of Lax vector fields is closed under Lie bracket and we introduce a new bracket for vector fields on a Lie algebra. This bracket defines a n…
We survey the many instances of derived bracket construction in differential geometry, Lie algebroid and Courant algebroid theories, and their properties. We recall and compare the constructions of Buttin and Vinogradov, and we prove that the Vinogradov bracket is the skew-symmetrization of a derived bracket. Odd (resp., even) Poisson brackets on supermanifolds are derived brackets of canonical even (resp., odd) Poisson brackets on their cotangent bundle (resp., parity-reversed cotangent bundle). Lie algebras have analogous properties, and the theory of Lie algebroids unifies the results valid…
On the dual space of \textit{extended structure}, equations governing the collective motion of two mutually interacting Lie-Poisson systems are derived. By including a twisted 2-cocycle term, this novel construction is providing the most general realization of (de)coupling of Lie-Poisson systems. A double cross sum (matched pair) of 2-cocycle extensions are constructed. The conditions are determined for this double cross sum to be a 2-cocycle extension by itself. On the dual spaces, Lie-Poisson equations are computed. We complement the discussion by presenting a double cross sum of some symmet…
We define covariant Lie derivatives acting on vector-valued forms on Lie algebroids and study their properties. This allows us to obtain a concise formula for the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket on Lie algebroids.
We construct Hermitian representations of Lie algebroids and associated unitary representations of Lie groupoids by a geometric quantization procedure. For this purpose we introduce a new notion of Hamiltonian Lie algebroid actions. The first step of our procedure consists of the construction of a prequantization line bundle. Next, we discuss a version of Kähler quantization suitable for this setting. We proceed by defining a Marsden-Weinstein quotient for our setting and prove a ``quantization commutes with reduction'' theorem. We explain how our geometric quantization procedure relates to a …
We show that representations up to homotopy can be differentiated in a functorial way. A van Est type isomorphism theorem is established and used to prove a conjecture of Crainic and Moerdijk on deformations of Lie brackets.
We give a direct, explicit and self-contained construction of a local Lie groupoid integrating a given Lie algebroid which only depends on the choice of a spray vector field lifting the underlying anchor map. This construction leads to a complete account of local Lie theory and, in particular, to a finite-dimensional proof of the fact that the category of germs of local Lie groupoids is equivalent to that of Lie algebroids.
Jacobi algebroids, that is graded Lie brackets on the Grassmann algebra associated with a vector bundle which satisfy a property similar to that of the Jacobi brackets, are introduced. They turn out to be equivalent to generalized Lie algebroids in the sense of Iglesias and Marrero and can be viewed also as odd Jacobi brackets on the supermanifolds associated with the vector bundles. Jacobi bialgebroids are defined in the same manner. A lifting procedure of elements of this Grassmann algebra to multivector fields on the total space of the vector bundle which preserves the corresponding bracket…
We introduce and study a construction of higher derived brackets generated by a (not necessarily inner) derivation of a Lie superalgebra. Higher derived brackets generated by an element of a Lie superalgebra were introduced in our earlier work. Examples of higher derived brackets naturally appear in geometry and mathematical physics. From a totally different viewpoint, we show that higher derived brackets arise when one wants to turn the inclusion map of a subalgebra of a differential Lie superalgebra, with a given complementary subalgebra, into a fibration. (For a non-Abelian complementary su…
Euler's equations for a two-dimensional system can be written in Hamiltonian form, where the Poisson bracket is the Lie-Poisson bracket associated to the Lie algebra of divergence free vector fields. We show how to derive the Poisson brackets of 2d hydrodynamics of ideal fluids as a reduction from the one associated to the full algebra of vector fields. Motivated by some recent results about the deformations of Lie-Poisson brackets of vector fields, we study the dispersive deformations of the Poisson brackets of Euler's equation and show that, up to the second order, they are trivial.
Let G be a Lie group. On the trivial principal G-bundle over the Lie algebra of G there is a natural connection whose curvature is the Lie bracket. The exponential map is given by parallel transport of this connection. If G is the diffeomorphism group of a manifold, the curvature of the natural connection is the Lie bracket of vectorfields on the manifold. The motion of a ball rolling on an oriented surface is the parallel transport of a similar connection on the trivial SO(3)-bundle over the surface. If the surface is a plane or a sphere, then the curvature of the connection is a scalar multi…
A VB-algebroid is a vector bundle object in the category of Lie algebroids. We attach to every VB-algebroid a differential graded Lie algebra and we show that it controls deformations of the VB-algebroid structure. Several examples and applications are discussed. This is the first in a series of papers devoted to deformations of vector bundles and related structures over differentiable stacks.
We survey recent results on the local and global integrability of a Lie algebroid, as well as the integrability of infinitesimal multiplicative geometric structures on it.
A general construction of an sh Lie algebra from a homological resolution of a Lie algebra is given. It is applied to the space of local functionals equipped with a Poisson bracket, induced by a bracket for local functions along the lines suggested by Gel'fand, Dickey and Dorfman. In this way, higher order maps are constructed which combine to form an sh Lie algebra on the graded differential algebra of horizontal forms. The same construction applies for graded brackets in field theory such as the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky bracket of the Hamiltonian BRST theory or the Batalin-Vilkovisky antib…
Generalized Schouten, Froelicher-Nijenhuis and Froelicher-Richardson brackets are defined for an arbitrary Lie algebroid. Tangent and cotangent lifts of Lie algebroids are introduced and discussed and the behaviour of the related graded Lie brackets under these lifts is studied. In the case of the canonical Lie algebroid on the tangent bundle, a new common generalization of the Froelicher-Nijenhuis and the symmetric Schouten brackets, as well as embeddings of the Nijenhuis-Richardson and the Froelicher-Nijenhuis bracket into the Schouten bracket, are obtained.
We provide a framework for extensions of Lie algebroids, including non-abelian extensions and Lie algebroids over different bases. Our approach involves Ehresmann connections, which allows straight generalizations of classical constructions. We exhibit a filtration in cohomology and explain the associated spectral sequence. We also give a description of the groupoid integrating an extension in case a complete connection can be fixed. The problem of integrability is also studied.
Natural analogs of Lie brackets on affine bundles are studied, based on natural examples from differential geometry and analytical mechanics. In particular, a close relation to Lie algebroids and, by a sort of duality, to affine analogs of Poisson structures is established as well as affine versions of the complete lift of a section and the Cartan exterior calculus.
We show that the integrability obstruction of a transitive Lie algebroid coincides with the lifting obstruction of a crossed module of groupoids associated naturally with the given algebroid. Then we extend this result to general extensions of integrable transitive Lie algebroids by Lie algebra bundles. Such a lifting obstruction is directly related with the classification of extensions of transitive Lie groupoids. We also give a classification of such extensions which differentiates to the classification of transitive Lie algebroids discussed in \cite{KCHM:new}.
It is well-known that the flows generated by two smooth vector fields commute, if the Lie bracket of these vector fields vanishes. This assertion is known to extend to Lipschitz continuous vector fields, up to interpreting the vanishing of their Lie bracket in the sense of almost everywhere equality. We show that this cannot be extended to general a.e. differentiable vector fields admitting a.e. unique flows. We show however that the extension holds when one field is Lipschitz continuous and the other one is merely Sobolev regular (but admitting a regular Lagrangian flow).
We extend the Nambu bracket to 1-forms. Following the Poisson-Lie case, we define Nambu-Lie groups as Lie groups endowed with a multiplicative Nambu structure. A Lie group G with a Nambu structure P is a Nambu-Lie group iff P=0 at the unit and the Nambu bracket of left (right) invariant forms is left (right) invariant. We define a corresponding notion of a Nambu-Lie algebra. We give several examples of Nambu-Lie groups and algebras.
We define and study a random Lie bracket that induces torsion in expectation. Almost all stochastic analysis on manifolds have assumed parallel transport. Mathematically this assumption is very reasonable. However, in many applied geometry and graphics problems parallel transport is not achieved, the "change in coordinates" are not exact due to noise. We formulate a stochastic model on a manifold for which parallel transport does not hold and analyze the consequences of this model with respect to classic quantities studied in Riemannian geometry. We first define a stochastic lie bracket that i…
In this dissertation we study Courant algebroids, objects that first appeared in the work of T. Courant on Dirac structures; they were later studied by Liu, Weinstein and Xu who used Courant algebroids to generalize the notion of the Drinfeld double to Lie bialgebroids. As a first step towards understanding the complicated properties of Courant algebroids, we interpret them by associating to each Courant algebroid a strongly homotopy Lie algebra in a natural way. Next, we propose an alternative construction of the double of a Lie bialgebroid as a homological hamiltonian vector field on an even…
A Poisson structure on a manifold is characterized by the Schouten bracket. The graded algebra of the tangent bundle with the Schouten bracket is a prototype of Lie superalgebra. The Poisson condition means that a cycle in the 2-chain space. Given a graded Lie superalgebra, the 0-graded subspace is a Lie algebra. In this note, using the DGA of tangent bundle with the Schouten bracket as a model, we start from an abstract Lie algebra, construct non-trivial Lie superalgebra by Schouten-like bracket. Then it is natural to ask how the core Lie algebra control the Lie superalgebra. One trial here i…
First we recall homology groups of prer Lie superalgebras. Then introducing double weighted chain spaces, we deal with pre Lie superalgebra of multi-vector fields with polynomial coefficients on n-dimensional number space. The bracket is Schouten bracket. We have several results about Euler number and Betti numbers of those homology groups of special pre Lie superalgebra.
We define solitons for the generalized Ricci flow on an exact Courant algebroid, building on the definitions of M. Garcia-Fernandez and J. Streets. We then define a family of flows for left-invariant Dorfman brackets on an exact Courant algebroid over a simply connected nilpotent Lie group, generalizing the bracket flows for nilpotent Lie brackets in a way that might make this new family of flows useful for the study of generalized geometric flows, such as the generalized Ricci flow. We provide explicit examples of both constructions on the Heisenberg group. We also discuss solutions to the ge…
The Lie algebroids are generalization of the Lie algebras. They arise, in particular, as a mathematical tool in investigations of dynamical systems with the first class constraints. Here we consider canonical symmetries of Hamiltonian systems generated by a special class of Lie algebroids. The ``coordinate part'' of the Hamiltonian phase space is the Poisson manifold $M$ and the Lie algebroid brackets are defined by means of the Poisson bivector. The Lie algebroid action defined on $M$ can be lifted to the phase space. The main observation is that the classical BRST operator has the same form …
It is a classical fact in Poisson geometry that the cotangent bundle of a Poisson manifold has the structure of a Lie algebroid. Manifestations of this structure are the Lichnerowicz differential on multivector fields (calculating Poisson cohomology) and the Koszul bracket of differential forms. "Raising indices" by the Poisson tensor maps the de Rham differential to the Lichnerowicz differential and the Koszul bracket to the Schouten bracket. In this paper, we present a homotopy analog of the above results. When an ordinary Poisson structure is replaced by a homotopy one, instead of a single …
The aim here is to sketch the development of ideas related to brackets and similar concepts: Some purely group theoretical combinatorics due to Ph. Hall led to a proof of the Jacobi identity for the Whitehead product in homotopy theory. Whitehead introduced crossed modules to characterize a second relative homotopy group; guided by combinatorial group theory considerations, Reidemeister and Peiffer explored this kind of structure to develop normal forms for the decomposition of a 3-manifold; but crossed modules are also lurking behind a forgotten approach of Turing to the extension problem for…
