We introduce a new cohomology for Lie algebroids, and prove that it provides a differential graded Lie algebra which ``controls'' deformations of the structure bracket of the algebroid. We also have a closer look at various special cases such as Lie algebras, Poisson manifolds, foliations, Lie algebra actions on manifolds.
We construct the family of algebroid brackets $[\cdot,\cdot]_{c,v}$ on the tangent bundle $T^*M$ to a Poisson manifold $(M,π)$ starting from an algebroid bracket of differential forms. We use these brackets to generate Poisson structures on the tangent bundle $TM$. Next, in the case when $M$ is equipped with a bi-Hamiltonian structure $(M,π_1, π_2)$ we show how to construct another family of Poisson structures. Moreover we present how to find Casimir functions for those structures and we discuss some particular examples.
Euler's equations for a two-dimensional system can be written in Hamiltonian form, where the Poisson bracket is the Lie-Poisson bracket associated to the Lie algebra of divergence free vector fields. We show how to derive the Poisson brackets of 2d hydrodynamics of ideal fluids as a reduction from the one associated to the full algebra of vector fields. Motivated by some recent results about the deformations of Lie-Poisson brackets of vector fields, we study the dispersive deformations of the Poisson brackets of Euler's equation and show that, up to the second order, they are trivial.
The theory of multidimensional Poisson vertex algebras (mPVAs) provides a completely algebraic formalism to study the Hamiltonian structure of PDEs, for any number of dependent and independent variables. In this paper, we compute the cohomology of the PVAs associated with two-dimensional, two-components Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type at the third differential degree. This allows us to obtain their corresponding Poisson-Lichnerowicz cohomology, which is the main building block of the theory of their deformations. Such a cohomology is trivial neither in the second group, corresponding to …
The theory of Poisson Vertex Algebras (PVAs) is a good framework to treat Hamiltonian partial differential equations. A PVA consists of a pair $(\mathcal{A},\{\cdot_λ\cdot\})$ of a differential algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and a bilinear operation called the $λ$-bracket. We extend the definition to the class of algebras $\mathcal{A}$ endowed with $d\geq1$ commuting derivations. We call this structure a \emph{multidimensional PVA}: it is a suitable setting to study Hamiltonian PDEs with $d$ spatial dimensions. We apply this theory to the study of deformations of the Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic ty…
We show that representations up to homotopy can be differentiated in a functorial way. A van Est type isomorphism theorem is established and used to prove a conjecture of Crainic and Moerdijk on deformations of Lie brackets.
We revisit the duality between five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from a new perspective. We give a unified treatment of supersymmetric gauge theories in three and five dimensions using cohomological localization techniques and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We survey various known results in a unified framework and provide simplified derivations of localization formulas, as well as various extensions including the case of irregular Seifert fibrations. We describe the reductions to four-dimensional gauge theories, and give an …
While small deformations of Kähler manifolds are Kähler too, we prove that the cohomological property to be $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-pure-and-full is not a stable condition under small deformations. This property, that has been recently introduced and studied by T.-J. Li and W. Zhang in [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and T. Drǎghici, T.-J. Li, and W. Zhang in [Symplectic forms and cohomology decomposition of almost complex four-manifolds, Int. Math. Res. Not.], [On the J-anti-invariant cohomology of almo…
A VB-algebroid is a vector bundle object in the category of Lie algebroids. We attach to every VB-algebroid a differential graded Lie algebra and we show that it controls deformations of the VB-algebroid structure. Several examples and applications are discussed. This is the first in a series of papers devoted to deformations of vector bundles and related structures over differentiable stacks.
Newly introduced generalized Poisson structures based on suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order are discussed in terms of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The associated `Jacobi identities' are expressed as conditions on these tensors, the cohomological contents of which is given. In particular, we determine the linear generalized Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple Lie algebras.
We show that if a generator of a differential Gerstenhaber algebra satisfies certain Cartan-type identities, then the corresponding Lie bracket is formal. Geometric examples include the shifted de Rham complex of a Poisson manifold and the subcomplex of differential forms on a symplectic manifold vanishing on a Lagrangian submanifold, endowed with the Koszul bracket. As a corollary we generalize a recent result by Hitchin on deformations of holomorphic Poisson manifolds.
On every split supermanifold equipped with the Rothstein even super-Poisson bracket we construct a deformation quantization by means of a Fedosov-type procedure. In other words, the supercommutative algebra of all smooth sections of the dual Grassmann algebra bundle of an arbitrarily given vector bundle E (equipped with a fibre metric) over a symplectic manifold M will be deformed by a series of bidifferential operators having first order supercommutator proportional to the Rothstein superbracket. Moreover, we discuss two constructions related to the above result, namely the quantized BRST-coh…
We compute the Poisson cohomology of a scalar Poisson bracket of Dubrovin-Novikov type with $D$ independent variables. We find that the second and third cohomology groups are generically non-vanishing in $D>1$. Hence, in contrast with the $D=1$ case, the deformation theory in the multivariable case is non-trivial.
In this paper we will introduce a new notion of geometric structures defined by systems of closed differential forms in term of the Clifford algebra of the direct sum of the tangent bundle and the cotangent bundle on a manifold. We develop a unified approach of a deformation problem and establish a criterion of unobstructed deformations of the structures from a cohomological point of view. We construct the moduli spaces of the structures by using the action of b-fields and show that the period map of the moduli space is locally injective under a cohomological condition (the local Torelli type …
The class of surfaces in 3-space possessing nontrivial deformations which preserve principal directions and principal curvatures (or, equivalently, the shape operator) was investigated by Finikov and Gambier as far back as in 1933. We review some of the known examples and results, demonstrate the integrability of the corresponding Gauss-Codazzi equations and draw parallels between this geometrical problem and the theory of compatible Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type. It turns out that coordinate hypersurfaces of the n-orthogonal systems arising in the theory of compatible Poisson brackets…
We prove that the bihamiltonian cohomology of a semisimple pencil of Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type vanishes for almost all degrees. This implies the existence of a full dispersive deformation of a semisimple bihamiltonian structure of hydrodynamic type starting from any infinitesimal deformation.
This work is a continuation of our previous paper arXiv:1812.06473 where we have constructed ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on 4D manifolds with a Killing vector field with isolated fixed points. In this work we expand on the mathematical aspects of the theory, with a particular focus on its nature as a cohomological field theory. The well-known Donaldson-Witten theory is a twisted version of ${\cal N}=2$ SYM and can also be constructed using the Atiyah-Jeffrey construction. This theory is concerned with the moduli space of anti-self-dual gauge connections, with a deformation th…
We present a global construction of a so-called D-bracket appearing in the physics literature of Double Field Theory (DFT) and show that if certain integrability criteria are satisfied, it can be seen as a sum of two Courant algebroid brackets. In particular, we show that the local picture of the extended space-time used in DFT fits naturally in the geometrical framework of para-Hermitian manifolds and that the data of an (almost) para-Hermitian manifold is sufficient to construct the D-bracket. Moreover, the twists of the bracket appearing in DFT can be interpreted in this framework geometric…
We combine classic stability results for foliations with recent results on deformations of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids to provide a cohomological characterization for rigidity of compact foliations on compact manifolds.
In this article we develop a new approach to the problem of the stability of locally conformally Kähler structures (l.c.k structures) under small deformations of complex structures and deformations of flat line bundles. We show that under the certain cohomological condition the stability of l.c.k structures does hold. We apply our approach to Hopf manifolds and its generalizations to obtain the stability of l.c.k structures which do not have potential in general. We give an explicit description of the cohomological obstructions of the stability of l.c.k structures on Inoue surfaces with $b_2=0…
We develop the deformations theory of a Dirac--Jacobi structure within a fixed Courant--Jacobi algebroid. Using the description of split Courant--Jacobi algebroids as degree $2$ contact $\mathbb{N} Q$ manifolds and Voronov's higher derived brackets, each Dirac--Jacobi structure is associated with a cubic $L_\infty$ algebra for any choice of a complementary almost Dirac--Jacobi structure. This $L_\infty$ algebra governs the deformations of the Dirac--Jacobi structure: there is a one-to-one correspondence between the MC elements of this $L_\infty$ algebra and the small deformations of the Dirac-…
Starting with a Lie algebroid ${\cal A}$ over a space $M$ we lift its action to the canonical transformations on the affine bundle ${\cal R}$ over the cotangent bundle $T^*M$. Such lifts are classified by the first cohomology $H^1({\cal A})$. The resulting object is a Hamiltonian algebroid ${\cal A}^H$ over ${\cal R}$ with the anchor map from $\G({\cal A}^H)$ to Hamiltonians of canonical transformations. Hamiltonian algebroids generalize Lie algebras of canonical transformations. We prove that the BRST operator for ${\cal A}^H$ is cubic in the ghost fields as in the Lie algebra case. The Poiss…
