We consider D7-branes probing several classes of Type IIB supergravity backgrounds, and study the classical problem of finding equilibrium configurations for the embedding functions. This is a method employed to model chiral symmetry breaking in the gravity dual of a strongly-coupled, confining gauge theory. We unveil and discuss a new type of phase transition appearing in the gravity systems, which is similar in nature and meaning to bulk phase transitions on the lattice. The existence of this genre of phase transition puts a new, intrinsic limit on the region of parameter space which can be used to study the physics of the dual field theory. We complete the analysis of D7 embeddings in wrapped-D5 supergravity backgrounds, and explain in what cases chiral-symmetry breaking is sensibly modelled by the gravity construction.
In this note, we have compared two different perturbation techniques that are used to generate dynamical black-brane solutions to Einstein equation in presence of negative cosmological constant. One is the `derivative expansion', where the gravity solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with the solutions of relativistic Navier-Stokes equation. The second is the expansion in terms of inverse power of space-time dimensions and here the gravity solutions are dual to a co-dimension one dynamical membrane, embedded in AdS space and coupled to a velocity field. We have shown that in large number…
By choosing modular ground state as the reference state, this paper finds that three most frequently-used distances and a quantum quasi-distance, i.e. the trace distance, Fubini-Study distance, Bures distance and Rényi relative entropy, all have gravity dualities. Their gravity dualities have two equivalent descriptions: one is given by the integration of the area of a cosmic brane, the other one is given by the Euclidian on-shell action of dual theory and the area of the cosmic brane. It then applies these dualities into the 2-dimensional conformal field theory as examples and finds the resul…
Poisson-Lie duality is a generalization of abelian and non-abelian T-duality, and it can be viewed as a map between solutions of the low-energy effective equations of string theory, i.e. at the (super)gravity level. We show that this fact extends to the next order in $α'$ (two loops in $σ$-model perturbation theory) provided that the map is corrected. The $α'$-correction to the map is induced by the anomalous Lorentz transformations of the fields that are necessary to go from a doubled $O(D,D)$-covariant formulation to the usual (super)gravity description.
We consider two established supergravities which are known to provide the low-energy effective description of either superstring theory or M-theory: the six-dimensional theory of Romans, and the maximal supergravity in seven dimensions. We compactify on an $S^{1}$ and $T^{2}$, respectively, to obtain 5D sigma-models coupled to gravity, and spectra of bosonic excitations are computed numerically by fluctuating fields on backgrounds which holographically realise confinement. We propose a method to detect mixing effects between scalar resonances and the pseudo-Nambu--Goldstone boson associated wi…

We consider $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ dualities proposed in the large central charge limit ($c\to\infty$) by Eberhardt. Here we propose the associated D1-D5 systems to be orbifolds of the standard $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ systems, thereby elevating the dualities to the finite-$c$ level on the boundary and to the quantum level in the bulk. In particular, we show that our brane systems yield low-energy sigma models whose subleading central charges match earlier predictions from bulk one-loop supergravity computations. In the case involving the Enriques surface, the finite-$c$ sigma model ha…
We carry out the formulation of nonrelativistic (NR) F-string theory for $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ Gaiotto-Maldacena class of geometries in type IIA supergravity. Considering the NS-NS sector, we reduce the type IIA theory into the NR sigma models those are formulated over the nonrelativistic target space geometries known as the torsional String Newton-Cartan (TSNC) backgrounds. Using these TSNC data, we write down the sigma model action and explore several properties in the semiclassical limit. In particular, we carry out the \emph{canonical} analysis of the T-duality transformation rules in TSNC bac…
In this essay I begin to lay out a conceptual scheme for: (i) analysing dualities as cases of theoretical equivalence; (ii) assessing when cases of theoretical equivalence are also cases of physical equivalence. The scheme is applied to gauge/gravity dualities. I expound what I argue to be their contribution to questions about: (iii) the nature of spacetime in quantum gravity; (iv) broader philosophical and physical discussions of spacetime. (i)-(ii) proceed by analysing duality through four contrasts. A duality will be a suitable isomorphism between models: and the four relevant contrasts are…
