The $p$-spectral radius of a graph $G\ $of order $n$ is defined for any real number $p\geq1$ as \[ λ^{\left( p\right) }\left( G\right) =\max\left\{ 2\sum_{\{i,j\}\in E\left( G\right) \ }x_{i}x_{j}:x_{1},\ldots,x_{n}\in\mathbb{R}\text{ and }\left\vert x_{1}\right\vert ^{p}+\cdots+\left\vert x_{n}\right\vert ^{p}=1\right\} . \] The most remarkable feature of $λ^{\left( p\right) }$ is that it seamlessly joins several other graph parameters, e.g., $λ^{\left( 1\right) }$ is the Lagrangian, $λ^{\left( 2\right) }$ is the spectral radius and $λ^{\left( \infty\right) }/2$ is the number of edges. This paper presents solutions to some extremal problems about $λ^{\left( p\right) }$, which are common generalizations of corresponding edge and spectral extremal problems.
Let $T_{r}\left( n\right) $ be the $r$-partite Turán graph of order $n.$ Two of the main results in the paper are:
(I) Let $r\geq2$ and $p>1.$ If $G$ is a $K_{r+1}$-free graph of order $n,$ then \[ λ^{\left( p\right) }\left( G\right) <λ^{\left( p\right) }\left( T_{r}\left( n\right) \right) , \] unless $G=T_{r}\left( n\right) .$
(II) Let $r\geq2$ and $p>1.$ If $G\ $is a graph of order $n,$ with \[ λ^{\left( p\right) }\left( G\right) >λ^{\left( p\right) }\left( T_{r}\left( n\right) \right) , \] then $G$ has an edge contained in at least $cn^{r-1}$ cliques of order $r+1,$ where $c$ is a positive number depending only on $p$ and $r.$
The spectral radius and rank of a graph are defined to be the spectral radius and rank of its adjacency matrix, respectively. It is an important problem in spectral extremal graph theory to determine the extremal graph that has the maximum or minimum spectral radius over certain families of graphs. Monsalve and Rada [Extremal spectral radius of graphs with rank 4, Linear Algebra Appl. 609 (2021) 1-11] obtained the extremal graphs with maximum and minimum spectral radii among all graphs with order n and rank 4. In this paper, we first determine the extremal graph which attains the maximum spect…
In 1984, Plesník determined the minimum total distance for given order and diameter and characterized the extremal graphs and digraphs. We prove the analog for given order and radius, when the order is sufficiently large compared to the radius. This confirms asymptotically a conjecture of Chen et al. We show the connection between minimizing the total distance and maximizing the size under the same conditions. We also prove some asymptotically optimal bounds for the maximum total distance.

The Turán type extremal problem asks to maximize the number of edges over all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. Similarly, the spectral Turán type extremal problem asks to maximize spectral radius of all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. In this paper, we determine the maximum spectral radius of all graphs without containing a linear forest as a subgraph and characterize all corresponding extremal graphs. In addition, the maximum number of edges and spectral radius of all bipartite graphs without containing $k\cdot P_3$ as a subgraph are obtained and all extremal graphs a…
Let G be a simple connected graph with n vertices, and let d_i be the degree of the vertex v_i in G. The extended adjacency matrix of G is defined so that the ij-entry is 1/2(d_i/d_j+d_j/d_i) if the vertices v_i and v_j are adjacent in G, and 0 otherwise. This matrix was originally introduced for developing novel topological indices used in the QSPR/QSAR studies. In this paper, we consider extremal problems of the largest eigenvalue of the extended adjacency matrix (also known as the extended spectral radius) of trees. We show that among all trees of order n>= 5, the path Pn(resp., the star Sn…
The odd wheel $W_{2k+1}$ is the graph formed by joining a vertex to a cycle of length $2k$. In this paper, we investigate the largest value of the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $W_{2k+1}$. We determine the structure of the spectral extremal graphs for all $k\geq 2, k\not\in \{4,5\}$. When $k=2$, we show that these spectral extremal graphs are among the Turán-extremal graphs on $n$ vertices that do not contain $W_{2k+1}$ and have the maximum number of edges, but when $k\geq 9$, we show that the family of spectral extremal graphs and the fam…
The normalized distance Laplacian of a graph $G$ is defined as $\mathcal{D}^\mathcal{L}(G)=T(G)^{-1/2}(T(G)-\mathcal{D}(G))T(G)^{-1/2}$ where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ is the matrix with pairwise distances between vertices and $T(G)$ is the diagonal transmission matrix. In this project, we study the minimum and maximum spectral radii associated with this matrix, and the structures of the graphs that achieve these values. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Reinhart that the complete graph is the unique graph with minimum spectral radius, and we give several partial results towards a second conjectu…
A relationship between $s$-extremal singly even self-dual $[24k+8,12k+4,4k+2]$ codes and extremal doubly even self-dual $[24k+8,12k+4,4k+4]$ codes with covering radius meeting the Delsarte bound, is established. As an example of the relationship, $s$-extremal singly even self-dual $[56,28,10]$ codes are constructed for the first time. In addition, we show that there is no extremal doubly even self-dual code of length $24k+8$ with covering radius meeting the Delsarte bound for $k \ge 137$. Similarly, we show that there is no extremal doubly even self-dual code of length $24k+16$ with covering r…
Brualdi and Hoffman (1985) proposed the problem of determining the maximal spectral radius of graphs with given size. In this paper, we consider the Brualdi-Hoffman type problem of graphs with given matching number. The maximal $Q$-spectral radius of graphs with given size and matching number is obtained, and the corresponding extremal graphs are also determined.
Let $G$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ is a Berge-$G$ if there is a bijection $ϕ: E(G)\to E(H)$ such that $e\subseteq ϕ(e)$ for all $e\in E(G)$. For any $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and a real number $p\geq 1$, the $p$-spectral radius $λ^{(p)}(H)$ of $H$ is defined as \[ λ^{(p)}(H):=\max_{{\bf x}\in\mathbb{R}^n,\,\|{\bf x}\|_p=1} r\sum_{\{i_1,i_2,\ldots,i_r\}\in E(H)} x_{i_1}x_{i_2}\cdots x_{i_r}. \] In this paper, we study the $p$-spectral radius of Berge-$G$ hypergraphs. We determine the $3$-uniform hypergraphs with maximum $p$-spectral radius for $p\geq 1$ among Berge-$G$ hypergraph…
In this paper, we present two sharp upper bounds for the spectral radius of (bipartite) graphs with forbidden a star forest and characterize all extremal graphs. Moreover, the minimum least eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of graph with forbidden a star forest and all extremal graphs for graphs are obtained.
A graph is minimally $k$-connected ($k$-edge-connected) if it is $k$-connected ($k$-edge-connected) and deleting arbitrary chosen edge always leaves a graph which is not $k$-connected ($k$-edge-connected). A classic result of minimally $k$-connected graph is given by Mader who determined the extremal size of a minimally $k$-connected graph of high order in 1937. Naturally, for a fixed size of a minimally $k$-(edge)-connected graphs, what is the extremal spectral radius? In this paper, we determine the maximum spectral radius for the minimally $2$-connected ($2$-edge-connected) graphs of given …
Let $G$ be a graph attaining the maximum spectral radius among all connected nonregular graphs of order $n$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Let $λ_1(G)$ be the spectral radius of $G$. A nice conjecture due to Liu, Shen and Wang [On the largest eigenvalue of non-regular graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 97 (2007) 1010--1018] asserts that \[ \lim_{n\to\infty} \frac{n^2(Δ-λ_1(G))}{Δ-1} = π^2 \] for each fixed $Δ$. Concerning an important structural property of the extremal graphs $G$, Liu and Li present another conjecture which states that $G$ has degree sequence $Δ,\ldots,Δ,δ$. Here, $δ=Δ-1$ or $δ=Δ-2$…
In this paper, we characterize the extremal digraphs with the maximal or minimal $α$-spectral radius among some digraph classes such as rose digraphs, generalized theta digraphs and tri-ring digraphs with given size $m$. These digraph classes are denoted by $\mathcal{R}_{m}^k$, $\widetilde{\boldsymbolΘ}_k(m)$ and $\INF(m)$ respectively. The main results about spectral extremal digraph by Guo and Liu in \cite{MR2954483} and Li and Wang in \cite{MR3777498} are generalized to $α$-spectral graph theory. As a by-product of our main results, an open problem in \cite{MR3777498} is answered. Furthermo…
This paper presents a sharp upper bound for the spectral radius of simple digraphs with described number of arcs. Further, the extremal graphs which attain the maximum spectral radius among all simple digraphs with fixed arcs are investigated. In particular, we characterize all extremal simple digraphs with the maximum spectral radius among all simple digraphs with arcs number $e=2{k\choose 2}+t$ and $k>4t^4+4$.
Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize the number of edges over all graphs which do not contain fixed forbidden subgraphs. Similarly, spectral Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize (signless Laplacian) spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. In this paper, we first present a stability result for $k\cdot P_3$ in terms of the number of edges and then determine all extremal graphs maximizing the signless Laplacian spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain a fixed linear forest with at most two odd paths or $k\cdot P_3$ as a subgraph, respe…
Minors play an important role in extremal graph theory and spectral extremal graph theory. Tait [The Colin de Verdière parameter, excluded minors, and the spectral radius, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 166 (2019) 42--58] determined the maximum spectral radius and characterized the unique extremal graph for $K_r$-minor free graphs of sufficiently large order $n$, he also made great progress on $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs and posed a conjecture: Let $2\leq s\leq t$ and $n-s+1=pt+q$, where $n$ is sufficiently large and $1\leq q\leq t.$ Then $K_{s-1}\nabla (pK_t\cup K_q)$ is the unique extremal graph w…
Identifying graphs with extremal properties is an extensively studied topic in spectral graph theory. In this paper, we study the log-concavity of a type of iteration sequence related to the $α$-normal weighted incidence matrices which is presented by Lu and Man for computing the spectral radius of hypergraphs. By using results obtained about the sequence and the method of some edge operations, we will characterize completely extremal k-graphs with the smallest spectral radius among bicyclic hypergraphs with given size.
Let $Q(G)=D(G)+A(G)$ be the signless Laplacian matrix of a simple graph of order $n$, where $D(G)$ and $A(G)$ are the degree diagonal matrix and the adjacency matrix of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we present a sharp upper bound for the signless spectral radius of $G$ without any tree and characterize all extremal graphs which attain the upper bound, which may be regarded as a spectral extremal version for the famous Erdős-Sós conjecture.
The $kK_{r+1}$ is the union of $k$ disjoint copies of $(r+1)$-clique. Moon [Canad. J. Math. 20 (1968) 95--102] and Simonovits [Theory of Graphs (Proc. colloq., Tihany, 1996)] independently showed that if $n$ is sufficiently large, then $K_{k-1}\vee T_{n-k+1,r}$ is the unique extremal graph for $kK_{r+1}$. In this paper, we consider the graph which has the maximum spectral radius among all graphs without $k$ disjoint cliques. We prove that if $G$ attains the maximum spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $kK_{r+1}$-free graphs for sufficiently large $n$, then $G$ is isomorphic to $K_{k-1}\vee T_{n…
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and $v_{i}\in V$, denote by $d_{i}$ the degree of vertex $v_{i}$. Let $f(x, y)>0$ be a real symmetric function in $x$ and $y$. The weighted adjacency matrix $A_{f}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a square matrix, where the $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\displaystyle f(d_{i}, d_{j})$ if the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ are adjacent and 0 otherwise. Li and Wang \cite{U9} tried to unify methods to study spectral radius of weighted adjacency matrices of graphs weighted by various topological indices. If $\displaystyle f'_{x}(x, y)\geq0$ and $\displaystyle f''_{x}(x, y)\geq0$, then $\displ…
In the 1960s, Erdős and his cooperators initiated the research of the maximum numbers of edges in a graph or a planar graph on $n$ vertices without $k$ edge-disjoint cycles. This problem had been solved for $k\leq4$. As pointed out by Bollobás, it is very difficult for general $k$. Recently, Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2017] confirmed a famous conjecture on maximum spectral radius of $n$-vertex planar graphs. Motivated by the above results, we consider two extremal problems on planar graphs without $k$ edge-disjoint cycles. We first determine the maximum number of edges in a plan…
The weighted adjacency matrix $A_{f}(G)$ of a simple graph $G=(V,E)$ is the $|V|\times|V|$ matrix whose $ij$-entry equals $f(d_{i},d_j)$, where $f(x,y)$ is a symmetric function such that $f(d_i,d_j)>0$ if $ij\in E$ and $f(d_i,d_j)=0$ if $ij\notin E$ and $d_i$ is the degree of the vertex $i$. In this paper, we determine the unique graph having the largest spectral radius of $A_{f}(G)$ among all the bicyclic graphs under the assumption that $f(x,y)$ is increasing and convex in $x$ and $f(x_1,y_1)\geq f(x_2,y_2)$ when $|x_1-y_1|>|x_2-y_2|$ and $x_1+y_1=x_2+y_2$. Moreover, we determine the unique …

Denote by $tC_\ell$ the disjoint union of $t$ cycles of length $\ell$. Let $ex(n,F)$ and $spex(n,F)$ be the maximum size and spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs, respectively. In this paper, we shall pay attention to the study of both $ex(n,tC_\ell)$ and $spex(n,tC_\ell)$. On the one hand, we determine $ex(n,tC_{2\ell+1})$ and characterize the extremal graph for any integers $t,\ell$ and $n\ge f(t,\ell)$, where $f(t,\ell)=O(t\ell^2)$. This generalizes the result on $ex(n,tC_3)$ of Erdős [Arch. Math. 13 (1962) 222--227] as well as the research on $ex(n,C_{2\ell+1})$ of Füredi an…

Let $G$ be a digraph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and outdegrees diagonal matrix $D(G)$. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, the $A_α$ matrix $A_α(G)$ of a digraph $G$ is defined as $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$. The eigenvalue of $A_α(G)$ with the largest modulus is called the $A_α$ spectral radius of $G$. In this paper, we first give some upper bounds for the $A_α$ spectral radius of a digraph and we also characterize the extremal digraphs attaining these bounds. Moreover, we define the $A_α$ energy of a digraph $G$ as $E^{A_α}(G)=\sum\limits_{i=1}^n(λ^α_i(G))^2$, where $n$ is the number of vertices and $λ…
Let $F$ be a graph. A hypergraph is called Berge $F$ if it can be obtained by replacing each edge in $F$ by a hyperedge containing it. Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, we say that a hypergraph $H$ is Berge $\mathcal{F}$-free if for every $F \in \mathcal{F}$, the hypergraph $H$ does not contain a Berge $F$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we investigate the connections between spectral radius of the adjacency tensor and structural properties of a linear hypergraph. In particular, we obtain a spectral version of Turán-type problems over linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs by using spectral me…
Let $F_s$ be the friendship graph obtained from $s$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. For fixed $s\ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$, the $F_s$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)],and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)]. Recently, the spectral extremal problems was widely studied for graphs containing no $H$ as a minor. For instance, Tait [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 166 (2019)], Zhai and Lin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. We prove three conjectures regarding the maximization of spectral invariants over certain families of graphs. Our most difficult result is that the join of $P_2$ and $P_{n-2}$ is the unique graph of maximum spectral radius over all planar graphs. This was conjectured by Boots and Royle in 1991 and independently by Cao and Vince in 1993. Similarly, we prove a conjecture of Cvetković and Rowlinson from 1990 stating that the unique outerplanar graph of maximum spectral radius is the join of a vertex and $P_{n-1}$. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Aouchiche et al from 2008 stating that a pineappl…
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$, and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, write $A_α(G)$ for the matrix $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ This paper presents some extremal results about the spectral radius $ρ(A_α(G))$ of $A_α(G)$ that generalize previous results about $ρ(A_0(G))$ and $ρ(A_{\frac{1}{2}}(G))$. In this paper, we give some results on graph perturbation for $A_α$-matrix with $α\in [0,1)$. As applications, we characterize all extremal trees with the maximum $A_α$-spectral radius in the set of all trees with prescribed degree se…
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$, and let $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ be the adjacency matrix and the degree matrix of $G$ respectively. Define the convex linear combinations $A_α(G)$ of $A (G)$ and $D (G) $ by $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$$ for any real number $0\leqα\leq1$. The \emph{$α$-index} of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of $A_α(G)$. In this paper, we determine the maximum $α$-index and characterize all extremal graphs for $K_r$ minor-free graphs, $K_{s,t}$ minor-free graphs, and star-forest-free graphs for any $0<α<1$ by unified eigenvector approach, respectively.
The $(k,r)$-fan is the graph consisting of $k$ copies of the complete graph $K_r$ which intersect in a single vertex, and is denoted by $F_{k,r}$. Erdős, Füredi, Gould and Gunderson [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 64 (1995) 89--100] determined the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $F_{k,3}$ as a subgraph. Furthermore, Chen, Gould, Pfender and Wei [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 89 (2003) 159--171] proved the analogous result on $F_{k,r}$ for the general case $r\ge 3$.In this paper, we show that for sufficiently large $n$, the graphs of order $n$ that contain no copy of $…
For integer $k\geq2,$ a spanning $k$-ended-tree is a spanning tree with at most $k$ leaves. Motivated by the closure theorem of Broersma and Tuinstra [Independence trees and Hamilton cycles, J. Graph Theory 29 (1998) 227--237], we provide tight spectral conditions to guarantee the existence of a spanning $k$-ended-tree in a connected graph of order $n$ with extremal graphs being characterized. Moreover, by adopting Kaneko's theorem [Spanning trees with constraints on the leaf degree, Discrete Appl. Math. 115 (2001) 73--76], we also present tight spectral conditions for the existence of a spann…
