We introduce transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) for gluons with definite rank. The rank refers to the azimuthal dependence corresponding to the tensorial structure in transverse momenta multiplying universal functions only depending on $x$ and $p_T^2$. In this way only a finite number of functions of definite rank remains for a target with the maximal rank depending on its spin. Gauge links, required for color gauge invariance, enter in the explicit description of the matrix elements corresponding to these TMDs and account for their process dependence. In this way a general gauge link dependent function is expressed in the universal set, where all process (i.e. gauge link) dependence is isolated in gluonic pole factors multiplying the universal TMDs of definite rank.
In this talk, we summarize how QCD evolution can be exploited to improve the treatment of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions. The methods allow existing non-perturbative fits to be turned into fully evolved TMDs that are consistent with a complete TMD-factorization formalism over the full range of kT. We argue that evolution is essential to the predictive power of calculations that utilize TMD parton distribution and fragmentation functions, especially TMD observables that are sensitive to transverse spin.
We present a short overview on transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions, giving their partonic interpretation and ways to access them. We then discuss the issue of their universality and its connection to factorization in perturbative QCD.
Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution and fragmentation functions are described as Fourier transforms of matrix elementscontaining nonlocal combinations of quark and gluon fields. These matrix elements also contain a gauge link operator with a process dependent path, of which the process dependence that can be traced back to the color flow in the process. Expanding into irreducible tensors built from the transverse momenta $p_\st$, we can define a universal set of TMD correlators of definite rank with a well-defined operator structure.
Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), in short referred to as TMDs, also take into account the transverse momentum (pT) of the partons. Just as the pT-integrated analogues we want to link them to quark and gluon matrix elements using Operator Product Expansion methods in QCD, involving operators of definite twist. The TMDs also involve operators of higher twist, which are not suppressed by powers of the hard scale, however. Using the expression for TMDs involving nonlocal matrix elements of quark and gluon fields there is a gauge link dependence, which also …
In a high-energy scattering process with hadrons in the initial state, color is involved. Transverse momentum dependent distribution functions (TMDs) describe the quark and gluon distributions in these hadrons in momentum space with the inclusion of transverse directions. Apart from the (anti)-quarks and gluons that are involved in the hard scattering process, additional gluon emissions by the hadrons have to be taken into account as well, giving rise to Wilson lines or gauge links. The TMDs involved are sensitive to the process under consideration and hence potentially nonuniversal due to the…
Azimuthal asymmetries in high-energy processes, most pronounced showing up in combination with single or double (transverse) spin asymmetries, can be understood with the help of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions. These appear in correlators containing expectation values of quark and gluon operators. TMDs allow access to new operators as compared to collinear (transverse momentum integrated) correlators. These operators include nontrivial process dependent Wilson lines breaking universality for TMDs. Making an angular decomposition in the azimut…
In this section, we discuss some basic features of transverse momentum dependent, or unintegrated, parton distribution functions. In particular, when these correlation functions are combined in a factorization formulae with hard processes beyond the simplest cases, there are basic problems with universality and factorization. We discuss some of these problems as well as the opportunities that they offer.
Recent BELLE measurements provide the cross section for single hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, differential in thrust and in the hadron transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. Universality breaking effects due to process-dependent soft factors make it very difficult to relate this cross sections to those corresponding to hadron-pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, where transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization can be applied. The correspondence between these two cross sections is examined in the framework of the Collins-Soper-Sterman factorization, in t…
Gluonic pole matrix elements explain the appearance of single spin asymmetries (SSA) in high-energy scattering processes. They involve a combination of operators which are odd under time reversal (T-odd). Such matrix elements appear in principle both for parton distribution functions and parton fragmentation functions. We show that for parton fragmentation functions these gluonic pole matrix elements vanish as a consequence of the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes in Quantum Chromodynamics. This result is important in the study of the universality of transverse momentum dependent (TM…
The color gauge-invariant transverse momentum dependent (TMD) quark correlators contain process dependent gauge links in the bilocal matrix elements. In this paper, we split these process dependent correlators into universal TMD correlators, which in turn can be parametrized in universal TMD distribution functions. The process dependence is contained in gluonic pole factors, of which the value is determined by the gauge link. The operator structures of the universal TMD correlators are identified using transverse moments. In this paper, specific results for double transverse weighting of quark…
We investigate the emergence of single spin asymmetries (SSA) in hard processes using transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution and fragmentation functions. Specifically, the description of SSA involves time reversal-odd functions. Process-dependence (non-universality) in measurements of SSA can be attributed to the non-trivial gauge link structure in the TMD correlator. Finding the appropriate gauge links, however, also enables us to characterize the non-universality
Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton correlators describing the partonic structure of hadrons contain gauge links, required by color gauge invariance. The required gauge links enter in the matrix elements that contain the parton fields and depend on the color flow in the hard process. The correlators are expanded in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, referred to as TMD PDFs, or in short TMDs. In this paper, we introduce gluon TMDs of definite rank, by making an expansion of the TMD gluon correlator with the help of irreducible tensors built from the tra…
In the field theoretical description of hadronic scattering processes, single transverse-spin asymmetries arise due to gluon initial and final state interactions. These interactions lead to process dependent Wilson lines in the operator definitions of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. In particular for hadron-hadron scattering processes with hadronic final states this has important ramifications for possible factorization formulas in terms of (non)universal TMD parton distribution functions. In this paper we will systematically separate the universality-breaking part…
We consider semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan events within transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. Based on the simultaneous fit of multiple data points, we extract the unpolarized TMD distributions and the non-perturbative evolution kernel. The high quality of the fit confirms a complete universality of TMD non-perturbative distributions. The extraction is supplemented by phenomenological analyses of various parts of the TMD factorization, such as sensitivity to non-perturbative parameterizations, perturbative orders, collinear distributions, correlati…
In this paper we consider the parametrizations of gluon transverse momentum dependent (TMD) correlators in terms of TMD parton distribution functions (PDFs). These functions, referred to as TMDs, are defined as the Fourier transforms of hadronic matrix elements of nonlocal combinations of gluon fields. The nonlocality is bridged by gauge links, which have characteristic paths (future or past pointing), giving rise to a process dependence that breaks universality. For gluons, the specific correlator with one future and one past pointing gauge link is, in the limit of small $x$, related to a cor…
Transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs) are central in high-energy physics from both theoretical and phenomenological points of view. In this manual we introduce the library, TMDlib, of fits and parameterisations for transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs) and fragmentation functions (TMD FFs) together with an online plotting tool, TMDplotter. We provide a description of the program components and of the different physical frameworks the user can access via the available parameterisations.
We present the determination of Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distributions from Monte Carlo parton showers. We investigate the effective TMD distributions obtained from the PYTHIA8 and HERWIG6 parton showers and compare them to the TMD distributions determined within the Parton Branching method.
Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), TMDs for short, are defined as the Fourier transform of matrix elements of nonlocal combinations of quark and gluon fields. The nonlocality is bridged by gauge links, which for TMDs have characteristic paths (future or past pointing), giving rise to a process dependence that breaks universality. It is possible, however, to construct sets of universal TMDs of which in a given process particular combinations are needed with calculable, process-dependent, coefficients. This occurs for both T-odd and T-even TMDs, including a…

Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions match collinear parton density functions (PDF) in the limit of small transverse distances, which is accounted for by global extractions of TMD distributions. We study the influence of the collinear PDF value and uncertainties on the determination of unpolarized TMD distributions and the description of Drell-Yan (DY) and Z-boson production measurements at low transverse momenta. We take into account, for the first time, flavor-dependent non-perturbative TMD profiles. We carry out a Bayesian analysis to incorporate the propagation of PDF uncertai…
This article gives an introduction to transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions and their use in shower Monte Carlo event generators for high-energy hadron collisions, and describes recent progress in the treatment of sea quark effects within a TMD parton-shower framework.
We review recent progress in the description of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions at small $x$ in the color glass condensate (CGC) effective theory. We discuss the origin of the non-universality of TMD gluon distributions in the TMD factorization framework and in the CGC theory and the equivalence of the two approaches in their overlapping domain of validity. We show some applications of this equivalence, including recent results on the behavior of TMD gluon distributions at small $x$, and on the study of gluon saturation. We discuss recent advances in the uni…
Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) provide three-dimensional images of the partonic structure of the nucleon in momentum space. We made impressive progress in understanding TMDs, both from the theoretical and experimental point of view. This brief overview on TMDs is divided in two parts: in the first, an essential list of achievements is presented. In the second, a selection of open questions is discussed.
General formulations of QCD factorization for hadronic collisions extend the notion of ordinary parton distributions to transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton density and parton decay functions. We discuss the use of the recent high-precision deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements for determination of TMD distributions. These are relevant for both low-pT and high-pT physics in hadron collisions. We comment on applications to multi-jet final states associated with electroweak gauge boson production at the LHC.
We derive gauge invariant operators entering definitions of the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) gluon distributions, for all five and six parton processes. Our calculations utilize color decomposition of amplitudes in the color flow basis. In addition, we find the general result for multi-gluon process (with arbitrary number of gluons) at large $N_{c}$. On phenomenological ground our results may be used for multi-jet production in the small-$x$ regime, where the TMD gluon distributions can be derived from the Color Glass Condensate effective theory.
We consider for the first time the QED corrections to the evolution of (un)polarized quark and gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution and fragmentation functions (TMDs in general). By extending their operator definition to QCD$\times$QED, we provide the mixed new anomalous dimensions up to ${\cal O}(α_sα)$ and the pure QED ones up to ${\cal O}(α^2)$. These new corrections are universal for all TMDs up to the flavor of the considered parton, i.e., the full flavor universality of TMD evolution found in pure QCD is broken in QCD$\times$QED by the presence of the electric charge. In addi…
Froissart Bound implies that the total proton-proton cross-section (or equivalently structure function) cannot rise faster than the logarithmic growth $\log^2 s \sim \log^2 (1/x)$, where \textit{s} is the square of the center of mass energy and \textit{x} is the Bjorken variable. In the present report, compatibility of such behavior will be shown in case of Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions Functions (TMDPDF) or TMDs for the model of proton based on self-similarity.
We extract the pion transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution by fitting the pion-induced Drell-Yan process within the framework of TMD factorization. The analysis is done at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) with proton TMD distribution and non-perturbative TMD evolution extracted earlier in the global fit. We observe the significant difference in the normalization of transverse momentum differential cross-section measured by E615 experiment and the theory prediction.
We assess the current phenomenological status of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) and study the effect of consistently including perturbative QCD (pQCD) evolution. Our goal is to initiate the process of establishing reliable, QCD-evolved parametrizations for the TMD PDFs and TMD FFs that can be used both to test TMD-factorization and to search for evidence of the breakdown of TMD-factorization that is expected for certain processes. In this article, we focus on spin-independent processes because they provide the simplest…
Generalised parton distributions (GPDs) and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) describe complementary aspects of the three-dimensional structure of hadrons. We discuss their relation to each other and recall important theory results concerning their properties and their connection with physical observables.
Transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) appear in many scattering processes at high energy, from the semi-inclusive DIS experiments at a few GeV to the Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC. Predictions for TMD observables crucially depend on TMD factorization, which in turn determines the TMD evolution of the observables with energy. In this contribution to SPIN2014 TMD factorization is outlined, including a discussion of the treatment of the nonperturbative region, followed by a summary of results on TMD evolution, mostly applied to azimuthal asymmetries.
The calculations of $Z + b{\bar b}$ tagged jet production performed in the four- and five-flavour schemes allow for detailed comparison of the heavy flavour structure of collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions as well as for detailed investigations of heavy quarks radiated during the initial state parton shower cascade. We have determined the first set of collinear and TMD parton distributions in the four-flavour scheme with NLO DGLAP splitting functions within the Parton-Branching (PB) approach. The four- and five-flavour PB-TMD distributions were used to calcul…
Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution correlators can be parametrized in terms of TMD parton distribution functions (PDFs), or TMDs for short. We provide an overview of the leading-twist quark and gluon TMDs, both in momentum space and in coordinate space (also called $b_T$-space, where $b_T$ is Fourier conjugate to the partonic momentum $k_T$). We consider unpolarized, vector polarized, as well as tensor polarized hadrons, which is relevant for spin-$0$, spin-$1/2$, and spin-$1$ hadrons.
Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) provide a unique probe of the three-dimensional spin structure of hadrons. We construct spin-dependent quasi-TMDPDFs that are amenable to lattice QCD calculations and that can be used to determine spin-dependent TMDPDFs. We calculate the short-distance coefficients connecting spin-dependent TMDPDFs and quasi-TMDPDFs at one-loop order. We find that the helicity and transversity distributions have the same coefficient as the unpolarized TMDPDF. We also argue that the same is true for pretzelosity and that this spin universalit…
We investigate the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) in the quasi-parton-distribution framework. The long standing hurdle of the so-called pinch pole singularity from the space-like gauge links in the TMD definitions can be resolved by the finite length of the gauge link along the hadron moving direction. In addition, with the soft factor subtraction, the quasi-TMD is free of linear divergence. We further demonstrate that the energy evolution equation of the quasi-TMD a.k.a. the Collins-Soper evolution, only depends on the hadron momentum. This leads to a clear matching…
Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, also abbreviated as TMDs, offer a three-dimensional picture of hadrons by taking the intrinsic transverse momentum of the parton into consideration. Hence, they are very important for us to understand the structure of hadrons. In this article, we calculate and summarize all TMDs of quark through the spectator model, from twist-2 to twist-4. Especially, we give complete results of TMDs at twist-4. We adopt a general analytical framework to calculate TMDs, with both scalar and axial-vector spectators being considered. All TMDs are calc…
Three-body decay functions in space-like parton branches are implemented to evaluate transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions in the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Interference contributions due to the next-to-leading order contribution are taken into account for the evaluation of the transverse momenta in initial state parton radiations. Some properties of the decay functions are also examined. As an example, we compare our results with an algorithm proposed in Ref.1), in which a transverse momentum distributions are evaluated…
We investigate the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) quark and gluon distribution functions in the modified chiral quark model ($χQM$). Calculations of the TMD quark and gluon densities, using the modified $χQM$ are done for the first time in this article. For this propose we first formulate the TMD interactions that occur in the $χQM$ at low $Q^2$ scale ($Q^2=0.35~ GeV^2$) and then obtain the TMD parton distributions inside the proton, considering the interactions. To this end, we need to compute the TMD bare quark distributions. These TMD bare densities are calculated, using the solution o…
We calculate in this paper the perturbative gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) using the exponential regulator for rapidity divergences. We obtain results for both unpolarized and linearly polarized distributions through next-to-next-to leading order in strong coupling constant, and through ${\cal O}(ε^2)$ in dimensional regulator (finding discrepancy for the linearly polarized gluon TMDPDFs with a previous result in the literature). We find a nontrivial momentum conservation sum rule for the linearly polarized compo…
The parton branching formulation of TMD evolution has recently been used to make predictions for jet observables at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including perturbative matching at next-to-leading order (NLO). This contribution presents results for the azimuthal Δ-ϕcorrelations in events with di-jets at large transverse momentum. It focuses on the back-to-back region of large Δ-ϕand discusses prospects for detailed studies of QCD dynamics in this region at the LHC.
The Drell-Yan process is studied in the framework of TMD factorization in the Sudakov region $s\gg Q^2\gg q_\perp^2$ corresponding to recent LHC experiments with $Q^2$ of order of mass of Z-boson and transverse momentum of DY pair $\sim$ few tens GeV. The DY hadronic tensors are expressed in terms of quark and quark-gluon TMDs with ${1\over Q^2}$ and ${1\over N_c^2}$ accuracy. It is demonstrated that in the leading order in $N_c$ the higher-twist quark-quark-gluon TMDs reduce to leading-twist TMDs due to QCD equation of motion. The resulting hadronic tensors depend on two leading-twist TMDs: $…
This paper is a part of a series of works where we in detail examine the concept of Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD), or k_T, factorization, which is frequently encountered in the literature and is widely used in the phenomenological applications of QCD at very high energies. We address the question of what exactly factorization is, as it is meant in different contexts and formalisms, and we compare the formalisms to each other. We clarify some basic concepts regarding factorization and how it exactly is applied in high energy QCD, and we make important notes on some key and fundamental poi…
We discuss the recently proposed scheme for the evolution of Transverse Momentum Distributions using the so-called "D^R". We discuss a new method to separate perturbative and non-perturbative effects in the analysis of the evolution of Transverse Momentum Distributions. We argue that the scheme is compatible with the standard CSS resummation approach when the running of the strong coupling is taken into account properly.
We discuss the parton branching (PB) evolution equation for transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), especially we concentrate on the angular ordering constrain and its effect on the TMD distributions. We discuss application of the PB TMDs to precise prediction of Drell-Yan transverse momentum spectrum at LHC, stressing the role of angular ordering in the low transverse momentum region. We compare the PB implementation of the angular ordering condition with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin-Watt (KMRW), both at the analytical and numerical level.
We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. We discuss computational tools for TMDs, an…
Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when target and/or quark are transversely polarized. In combination with the final state interactions, this transverse deformation provides a natural mechanism for naive-T odd transverse single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS. The deformation of PDFs in impact parameter space can also be related to the transverse force acting on the active quark in polarized DIS at higher twist.
Transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions have different operator definitions, depending on the process under consideration. We study that aspect of TMD factorization in the small-x limit, for the various unpolarized TMD gluon distributions encountered in the literature. To do this, we consider di-jet production in hadronic collisions, since this process allows to be exhaustive with respect to the possible operator definitions, and is suitable to be investigated at small x. Indeed, for forward and nearly back-to-back jets, one can apply both the TMD factorization and Color Glass …
We present exploratory studies of the 3D proton tomography through polarized $T$-odd gluon TMDs at leading twist, obtained in a spectator-model framework. We embody in our approach a flexible parameterization for the spectator-mass spectral function, suited to catch both small- and moderate-$x$ effects. All these studies are relevant to unveil the gluon dynamics inside hadrons, which represents a core research line of studies at new-generation colliders, such as the Electron-Ion Collider, NICA-SPD, the High-Luminosity LHC, and the Forward Physics Facility.
We briefly recall the main physical features of the parton distributions in the quantum statistical picture of the nucleon. Some predictions from a next-to-leading order QCD analysis are successfully compared to recent unpolarized and polarized experimental results. We will discuss the extension to the transverse momentum dependence of the parton distributions and its relevance for semiinclusive deep inelastic scattering. Finally, we will present some new positivity constraints for spin observables and their implications for parton distributions.
We discuss prospects for Monte Carlo event generators incorporating the dynamics of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. We illustrate TMD evolution in the parton branching formalism, and present Monte Carlo applications of the method.
In this proceeding, we review our recent work in which we performed the first global analysis of nuclear modified Transverse Momentum Distribution Functions (TMDs). We demonstrate for the first time that the global set of TMD experimental data from HERMES, E866, E772, RHIC, ATLAS, and CMS, can be described using a simple model which accounts for the nuclear modifications for the TMDs as a non-perturbative correction. Using this model, we extract the nuclear modified TMDs for the first time.
We explicitly demonstrate how to correctly define the hadronic parton distributions (PDFs, TMDs, and GPDs) in the soft-wall AdS/QCD approach, based on the use of a quadratic dilaton field, providing confinement and spontaneous breaking of conformal and chiral symmetries. The power behavior of parton distributions at large values of the light-cone variable is consistent with quark counting rules and Drell-Yan-West duality. All parton distributions are defined in terms of profile functions, which depend on the light-cone coordinate and are fixed from PDFs and electromagnetic form factors.
Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distributions are a very powerful concept for the description of low and high transverse momentum effects in high energy collisions. The Parton Branching (PB) method provides TMD distributions which can be used in parton shower simulations, as already implemented in \cascade\ Monte Carlo event generator. This report gives a description of the work done during the DESY summer student program 2021, young scientists from very different time zones connecting from remote twice a day for 8 weeks, to develop a method, PS2TMD, that allows to determine effecti…
We present the results of T-even TMDs in a light front quark-diquark model of nucleons with the wave functions constructed from the soft-wall AdS/QCD prediction. The relations amongst TMDs are discussed. The $p_\perp$ dependence of the TMDs are compared with the $t$-dependence of the GPDs. AdS/QCD wave function provides an explanation behind the approximate $x$ and $p_\perp$ factorization observed in lattice TMD calculations.
We use the TMD quark densities of the proton to investigate unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC energies. We investigate the case where the gluon-to-quark splitting occurs at the last evolution step and calculate the TMD sea quark density as a convolution of the CCFM-evolved gluon distribution and the TMD gluon-to-quark splitting function which contains all single logarithmic small-x corrections to the sea quark evolution for any order of perturbation theory. Based on the O(alpha) production amplitude of quark-antiquark annihilation calculated ac…
