In the framework of a Particle-In-Cell scheme for some 1D Vlasov-Poisson system depending on a small parameter, we propose a time-stepping method which is numerically uniformly accurate when the parameter goes to zero. Based on an exponential time differencing approach, the scheme is able to use large time steps with respect to the typical size of the fast oscillations of the solution.
The Vlasov--Maxwell equations are used for the kinetic description of magnetized plasmas. As they are posed in an up to 3+3 dimensional phase space, solving this problem is extremely expensive from a computational point of view. In this paper, we exploit the low-rank structure in the solution of the Vlasov equation. More specifically, we consider the Vlasov--Maxwell system and propose a dynamic low-rank integrator. The key idea is to approximate the dynamics of the system by constraining it to a low-rank manifold. This is accomplished by a projection onto the tangent space. There, the dynamics…

In this paper, we formulate and analyse exponential integrations when applied to nonlinear Schrödinger equations in a normal or highly oscillatory regime. A kind of exponential integrators with energy preservation, optimal convergence and long time near conservations of actions, momentum and density will be formulated and analysed. To this end, we derive continuous-stage exponential integrators and show that the integrators can exactly preserve the energy of Hamiltonian systems. Three practical energy-preserving integrators are presented. It is shown that these integrators exhibit optimal conv…
In this paper, we consider a class of highly oscillatory Hamiltonian systems which involve a scaling parameter $\varepsilon\in(0,1]$. The problem arises from many physical models in some limit parameter regime or from some time-compressed perturbation problems. The solution of the model exhibits rapid temporal oscillations with $\mathcal{O}(1)$-amplitude and $\mathcal{O}(1/\varepsilon)$-frequency, which makes classical numerical methods inefficient. We apply the two-scale formulation approach to the problem and propose two new time-symmetric numerical integrators. The methods are proved to hav…
Rational exponential integrators (REXI) are a class of numerical methods that are well suited for the time integration of linear partial differential equations with imaginary eigenvalues. Since these methods can be parallelized in time (in addition to the spatial parallelization that is commonly performed) they are well suited to exploit modern high performance computing systems. In this paper, we propose a novel REXI scheme that drastically improves accuracy and efficiency. The chosen approach will also allow us to easily determine how many terms are required in the approximation in order to …
In this paper, we propose a semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin method coupled with Runge-Kutta exponential integrators (SLDG-RKEI) for nonlinear Vlasov dynamics. The commutator-free Runge-Kutta (RK) exponential integrators (EI) were proposed by Celledoni, et al. (FGCS, 2003). In the nonlinear transport setting, the RKEI can be used to decompose the evolution of the nonlinear transport into a composition of a sequence of linearized dynamics. The resulting linearized transport equations can be solved by the semi-Lagrangian (SL) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method proposed in Cai, et al. (JSC,…

In this paper we present a novel class of asymptotic consistent exponential-type integrators for Klein-Gordon-Schrödinger systems that capture all regimes from the slowly varying classical regime up to the highly oscillatory non-relativistic limit regime. We achieve convergence of order one and two that is uniform in $c$ without any time step size restrictions. In particular, we establish an explicit relation between gain in negative powers of the potentially large parameter $c$ in the error constant and loss in derivative.
In this paper, we develop a framework to construct energy-preserving methods for multi-components Hamiltonian systems, combining the exponential integrator and the partitioned averaged vector field method. This leads to numerical schemes with both advantages of long-time stability and excellent behavior for highly oscillatory or stiff problems. Compared to the existing energy-preserving exponential integrators (EP-EI) in practical implementation, our proposed methods are much efficient which can at least be computed by subsystem instead of handling a nonlinear coupling system at a time. Moreov…
We introduce a new methodology based on the multirevolution idea for constructing integrators for stochastic differential equations in the situation where the fast oscillations themselves are driven by a Stratonovich noise. Applications include in particular highly-oscillatory Kubo oscillators and spatial discretizations of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with fast white noise dispersion. We construct a method of weak order two with computational cost and accuracy both independent of the stiffness of the oscillations. A geometric modification that conserves exactly quadratic invariants is a…
We propose a novel class of uniformly accurate integrators for the Klein--Gordon equation which capture classical $c=1$ as well as highly-oscillatory non-relativistic regimes $c\gg1$ and, at the same time, allow for low regularity approximations. In particular, the schemes converge with order $τ$ and $τ^2$, respectively, under lower regularity assumptions than classical schemes, such as splitting or exponential integrator methods, require. The new schemes in addition preserve the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) limit on the discrete level. More precisely, we will design our schemes in such a way t…

We study the conservation properties of the Hermite-discontinuous Galerkin (Hermite-DG) approximation of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. In this semi-discrete formulation, the total mass is preserved independently for every plasma species. Further, an energy invariant exists if central numerical fluxes are used in the DG approximation of Maxwell's equations, while a dissipative term is present when upwind fluxes are employed. In general, traditional temporal integrators might fail to preserve invariants associated with conservation laws during the time evolution. Hence, we analyze the capability…
An improved uniform error bound at $O\left(h^m+\varepsilon^2 τ^2\right)$ is established in $H^{α/2}$-norm for the long-time dynamics of the nonlinear space fractional Klein-Gordon equation (NSFKGE). A second-order exponential wave integrator (EWI) method is used to semi-discretize NSFKGE in time and the Fourier spectral method in space is applied to derive the full-discretization scheme. Regularity compensation oscillation (RCO) technique is employed to prove the improved uniform error bounds at $O\left(\varepsilon^2 τ^2\right)$ in temporal semi-discretization and $O\left(h^m+\varepsilon^2 τ^2…

The efficient numerical solution of many kinetic models in plasma physics is impeded by the stiffness of these systems. Exponential integrators are attractive in this context as they remove the CFL condition induced by the linear part of the system, which in practice is often the most stringent stability constraint. In the literature, these schemes have been found to perform well, e.g., for drift-kinetic problems. Despite their overall efficiency and their many favorable properties, most of the commonly used exponential integrators behave rather erratically in terms of the allowed time step si…
Xiao and Qin [Computer Physics Comm., 265:107981, 2021] recently proposed a remarkably simple modification of the Boris algorithm to compute the guiding centre of the highly oscillatory motion of a charged particle with step sizes that are much larger than the period of gyrorotations. They gave strong numerical evidence but no error analysis. This paper provides an analysis of the large-stepsize modified Boris method in a setting that has a strong non-uniform magnetic field and moderately bounded velocities, considered over a fixed finite time interval. The error analysis is based on comparing…
