It was previously established that the critical staggered XXZ spin chain provides a lattice regularization of the black hole CFT. We reconsider the continuum limit of this spin chain with the exact method of non-linear integral equations (NLIEs), paying particular attention to the effects of a singular integration kernel. With the help of the NLIEs, we rederive the continuous black hole spectrum, but also numerically match the density of states of the spin chain with that of the CFT, which is a new result. Finally, we briefly discuss the integrable structure of the black hole CFT and the identification of its massive integrable perturbation on the lattice.
This work concerns the quantum Lorentzian and Euclidean black hole non-linear sigma models. For the Euclidean black hole sigma model an equilibrium density matrix is proposed, which reproduces the modular invariant partition function from the 2001 paper of Maldacena, Ooguri and Son. For the Lorentzian black hole sigma model, using its formulation as a gauged ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ WZW model, we describe the linear and Hermitian structure of its space of states and also propose an expression for the equilibrium density matrix. Our analysis is guided by the results of the study of a certain cr…
We have introduced Faddeev-Niemi type variables for static SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The variables suggest that a non-linear sigma model whose sigma fields take values in SU(3)/(U(1)xU(1)) and SU(3)/(SU(2)xU(1)) may be relevant to infrared limit of the theory. Shabanov showed that the energy functional of the non-linear sigma model is bounded from below by certain functional. However, the Shabanov's functional is not homotopy invariant, and its value can be an arbitrary real number -- therefore it is not a topological charge. Since the third homotopy group of SU(3)/(U(1)xU(1)) is isomorphic to …
A large class of Feynman integrals, like e.g., two-point parameter integrals with at most one mass and containing local operator insertions, can be transformed to multi-sums over hypergeometric expressions. In this survey article we present a difference field approach for symbolic summation that enables one to simplify such definite nested sums to indefinite nested sums. In particular, the simplification is given -if possible- in terms of harmonic sums, generalized harmonic sums, cyclotomic harmonic sums or binomial sums. Special emphasis is put on the developed packages Sigma, EvaluateMultiSu…
We discuss a natural extension of the AKSZ construction to the case where the source is given by a supermanifold with a chosen integral form. We then focus on the special case with the target given by a Courant algebroid. In the simplest case this leads to the BV version of the super Chern-Simons theory, as developed by Grassi-Maccaferri and Cremonini-Grassi. In the case of exact Courant algebroids we derive the 2-dimensional $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ sigma model on the boundary, together with the Wess-Zumino term, paralleling the approach of Ševera in the bosonic case.
We use the techniques of integral forms to analyse the easiest example of two dimensional sigma models on a supermanifold. We write the action as an integral of a top integral form over a D=2 supermanifold and we show how to interpolate between different superspace actions. Then, we consider curved supermanifolds and we show that the definitions used for flat supermanifold can also be used for curved supermanifolds. We prove it by first considering the case of a curved rigid supermanifold and then the case of a generic curved supermanifold described by a single superfield $E$.
We propose a new multiple integral representation for the correlation function <sigma_1^z sigma_{m+1}^z> of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in the disordered regime. We show that for Delta=1/2 the integrals can be separated and computed exactly. As an example we give the explicit results up to the lattice distance m=8. It turns out that the answer is given as integer numbers divided by 2^[(m+1)^2].
We apply the antifield quantization method of Batalin and Vilkovisky to the calculation of the path integral for the Poisson-Sigma model in a general gauge. For a linear Poisson structure the model reduces to a nonabelian gauge theory, and we obtain the formula for the partition function of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory for closed two-dimensional manifolds.
We propose nonlinear integral equations for the finite volume one-particle energies in the O(3) and O(4) nonlinear sigma-models. The equations are written in terms of a finite number of components and are therefore easier to solve numerically than the infinite component excited state TBA equations proposed earlier. Results of numerical calculations based on the nonlinear integral equations and the excited state TBA equations agree within numerical precision.
We introduce a spin chain based on finite-dimensional spin-1/2 SU(2) representations but with a non-hermitian `Hamiltonian' and show, using mostly analytical techniques, that it is described at low energies by the SL(2,R)/U(1) Euclidian black hole Conformal Field Theory. This identification goes beyond the appearance of a non-compact spectrum: we are also able to determine the density of states, and show that it agrees with the formulas in [J. Math. Phys. 42, 2961 (2001)] and [JHEP 04, 014 (2002)], hence providing a direct `physical measurement' of the associated reflection amplitude.
In QFT the effective potential is an important tool to study symmetry breaking phenomena. It is known that, in some theories, the canonical approach and the path-integral approach yield different effective potentials. In this paper we investigate this for the Euclidean N=2 linear sigma model. Both the Green's functions and the effective potential will be computed in three different ways. The relative merits of the various approaches are discussed.
In this paper we investigate the non-linear sigma model arising in the reduction of D = 5 supergravity to D = 3, and present the application of this sigma model to supersymmetric black ring solutions in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. With the ansatz of stationary solutions with $R \times U(1)\times U(1)$ isometry, we obtain a two-dimensional Lagrangian corresponding to geodesic motion of a string-like object on the coset $G_{2(+2)}/SO(4)$, and study the algebra of conserved charges and supersymmetry constraints of supersymmetric black rings. We also obtain the semi-classical wave funct…
In this paper we outline the construction of semiclassical eigenfunctions of integrable models in terms of the semiclassical path integral for the Poisson sigma model with the target space being the phase space of the integrable system. The semiclassical path integral is defined as a formal power series with coefficients being Feynman diagrams. We also argue that in a similar way one can obtain irreducible semiclassical representations of Kontsevich's star product.
Two solutions of stringy gravity in three and four dimensions which admit interpretation as a black hole and a black string, respectively, are discussed. It is demonstrated that they are exact WZWN nonlinear sigma models to all orders in the inverse string tension, and hence represent exact conformal field theories on the world-sheet. Furthermore, since the dilaton for these two solutions is constant, they also solve the equations of motion of standard GR with a minimally coupled three form field strength. (Based on a talk presented at the Conference on Quantum Aspects of Black Holes, U. of Ca…
Point-like Liouville integrable dynamical defects are introduced in the context of the Landau-Lifshitz and Principal Chiral (Faddeev-Reshetikhin) models. Based primarily on the underlying quadratic algebra we identify the first local integrals of motion, the associated Lax pairs as well as the relevant sewing conditions around the defect point. The involution of the integrals of motion is shown taking into account the sewing conditions.
We prove the uniqueness theorem for self-gravitating non-linear sigma-models in higher dimensional spacetime. Applying the positive mass theorem we show that Schwarzschild-Tagherlini spacetime is the only maximally extended, static asymptotically flat solution with non-rotating regular event horizon with a constant mapping.
We construct analytical solutions describing black holes and black strings in the Einstein $SU(N)$-non-linear sigma model in $(3+1)$ dimensions. This construction is carried out using the maximal embbeding ansatz of $SU(2)$ together with the Euler parameterization of the $SU(N)$ group, in such a way that the non-linear sigma model equations are automatically satisfied for arbitrary values of the flavor number $N$ while the Einstein equations can be solved analytically. In particular, we construct black holes with spherical and flat horizons as well as black strings that present the geometry of…
Zero-dimensional $O(n)$-symmetric sigma models are studied by using Picard--Lefschetz integration method in the presence of small symmetry-breaking perturbations. Due to approximate symmetry, downward flows turn out to show significant structures: They slowly travel along the set of pseudo classical points, and branch into other directions so as to span middle-dimensional integration cycles. We propose an efficient way to find such slow motions for computing Lefschetz thimbles. In the limit of symmetry restoration, we figure out that only special combinations of Lefschetz thimbles can survive …
Breitenlohner, Maison and Gibbons claimed some time ago that all bona-fide four dimensional asymptotically flat non-degenerate black holes are in a symmetry orbit of the Schwarzschild/Kerr black hole in a large set of theories of gravity and matter. Their argument involved reducing the theory on a time-like Killing vector field and analysing the resulting three dimensional sigma model of maps to a symmetric space $G/H$. In the construction of their proof, they conjectured the existence of a suitable $H$-transformation that always remove the electromagnetic charges of the four dimensional black…
We construct static multicenter solutions of phantom Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory from null geodesics of the target space, leading to regular black holes without spatial symmetry for certain discrete values of the dilaton coupling constant. We also discuss the three-dimensional gravitating sigma models obtained by reduction of phantom Einstein-Maxwell, phantom Kaluza-Klein and phantom Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion theories. In each case, we generate by group transformations phantom charged black hole solutions from a neutral seed.
The exact general solution for a sigma model having the $2-d$ stringy black hole (SBH) as internal manifold is found in closed form. We also give the exact solution for the massless complex Sine-Gordon (MCSG) model. Both, models and their solutions are related by analytic continuation. The solution is expressed in terms of four arbitrary functions of one variable. (hep-th 9312085).
We construct the path integral for one-dimensional non-linear sigma models, starting from a given Hamiltonian operator and states in a Hilbert space. By explicit evaluation of the discretized propagators and vertices we find the correct Feynman rules which differ from those often assumed. These rules, which we previously derived in bosonic systems \cite{paper1}, are now extended to fermionic systems. We then generalize the work of Alvarez-Gaumé and Witten \cite{alwi} by developing a framework to compute anomalies of an $n$-dimensional quantum field theory by evaluating perturbatively a corresp…
We explain the M-sigma relation between the mass of super massive black holes in galaxies and the velocity dispersions of their bulges in the scalar field or the Bose-Einstein condensate dark matter model. The gravity of the central black holes changes boundary conditions of the scalar field at the galactic centers. Owing to the wave nature of the dark matter this significantly changes the galactic halo profiles even though the black holes are much lighter than the bulges. As a result the heavier the black holes are, the more compact the bulges are, and hence the larger the velocity dispersion…
We present string-theory derivation of the semiclassical entropy of extremal dyonic black holes in the approach based on conformal sigma model (NS-NS embedding of the classical solution). We demonstrate (resolving some puzzles existed in previous related discussions) that the degeneracy responsible for the entropy is due to string oscillations in four transverse dimensions `intrinsic' to black hole: four non-compact directions of the D=5 black hole and three non-compact and one compact (responsible for embedding of magnetic charges) dimensions in the D=4 black hole case. Oscillations in other …
When an M-theory fivebrane wraps a holomorphic surface $\mathcal{P}$ in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ the low energy dynamics is that of a black string in 5 dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity. The infrared dynamics on the string worldsheet is an $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ 2D conformal field theory. Assuming the 2D CFT can be described as a nonlinear sigma model, we describe the target space geometry of this model in terms of the data of $X$ and $\mathcal{P}$. Variations of weight two Hodge structures enter the construction of the model in an interesting way.
By means of an identity that equates elliptic genus partition function of a supersymmetric sigma model on the $N$-fold symmetric product $S^N X$ of $X$ ($S^N X=X^N/S_N$, $S_N$ is the symmetric group of $N$ elements) to the partition function of a second quantized string theory, we derive the asymptotic expansion of the partition function as well as the asymptotic for the degeneracy of spectrum in string theory. The asymptotic expansion for the state counting reproduces the logarithmic correction to the black hole entropy.
Stationary solutions of 5D supergravity with U(1) isometry can be efficiently studied by dimensional reduction to three dimensions, where they reduce to solutions to a locally supersymmetric non-linear sigma model. We generalize this procedure to 5D gauged supergravity, and identify the corresponding gauging in 3D. We pay particular attention to the case where the Killing spinor is non constant along the fibration, which results, even for ungauged supergravity in 5D, in an additional gauging in 3D, without introducing any extra potential. We further study SU(2)\times U(1) symmetric solutions, …
The technical problem of deriving the full Green functions of the elementary pion fields of the nonlinear sigma model in terms of ancestor amplitudes involving only the flat connection and the nonlinear sigma model constraint is a very complex task. In this paper we solve this problem by integrating, order by order in the perturbative loop expansion, the local functional equation derived from the invariance of the SU(2) Haar measure under local left multiplication. This yields the perturbative definition of the path-integral over the non-linearly realized SU(2) group.
Five-dimensional non-extreme rotating black holes with large NS-NS five-brane and fundamental string charge are shown to be described by a conformal sigma model, which is a marginal integrable deformation of six-dimensional SL(2,R) x SU(2) WZW model. The two WZW levels are equal to the five-brane charge, while the parameters of the two marginal deformations generated by the left and right chiral SU(2) currents are proportional to the two angular momentum components of the black hole. The near-horizon description is effectively in terms of a free fundamental string whose tension is rescaled by …
The goal of this paper is to make first steps towards the quantisation of integrable non-linear sigma models using the formalism of affine Gaudin models, by approaching these theories through their conformal limits. We focus mostly on the example of the Klimčík model, which is a two-parameter deformation of the Principal Chiral Model on a Lie group $G$. We show that the UV fixed point of this theory is described classically by two decoupled chiral affine Gaudin models, encoding its left- and right-moving degrees of freedom, and give a detailed analysis of the chiral and integrable structures o…
By carefully analyzing the relations between operator methods and the discretized and continuum path integral formulations of quantum-mechanical systems, we have found the correct Feynman rules for one-dimensional path integrals in curved spacetime. Although the prescription how to deal with the products of distributions that appear in the computation of Feynman diagrams in configuration space is surprising, this prescription follows unambiguously from the discretized path integral. We check our results by an explicit two-loop calculation.
Phase diagrams of the boson stars and shells of the $U(1)$ gauged $\mathbb{C}P^N$ nonlinear sigma model are studied. The solutions of the model exhibit both the ball- and the shell-shaped charge density depending on $N$. There appear four independent regions of the solutions which are essentially caused from the coexistence of electromagnetism and gravity. We examine several phase diagrams of the boson stars and the shells and discuss what and how the regions are emerged. A coupling with gravity allows for harboring of the charged black holes for the $Q$-shell solutions. Some solutions are str…
Many authors - beginning with Bekenstein - have suggested that the energy levels E_n of a quantized isolated Schwarzschild black hole have the form E_n = sigma sqrt{n} E_P, n=1,2,..., sigma =O(1), with degeneracies g^n. In the present paper properties of a system with such a spectrum, considered as a quantum canonical ensemble, are discussed: Its canonical partition function Z(g,beta=1/kT), defined as a series for g<1, obeys the 1-dimensional heat equation. It may be extended to values g>1 by means of an integral representation which reveals a cut of Z(g,beta) in the complex g-plane from g=1 t…

A simple, often invoked, regularization scheme of quantum mechanical path integrals in curved space is mode regularization: one expands fields into a Fourier series, performs calculations with only the first $M$ modes, and at the end takes the limit $M \to \infty$. This simple scheme does not manifestly preserve reparametrization invariance of the target manifold: particular noncovariant terms of order $\hbar^2$ must be added to the action in order to maintain general coordinate invariance. Regularization by time slicing requires a different set of terms of order $\hbar^2$ which can be derived…
This paper concerns constructing topological sigma models governing maps from semirigid super Riemann surfaces to general target supermanifolds. We define both the A model and B model in this general setup by defining suitable BRST operators and physical observables. Using supersymmetric localization, we express correlation functions in these theories as integrals over suitable supermanifolds. In the case of the A model, we obtain an integral over the supermoduli space of "superinstantons". The language of supergeometry is used extensively throughout this paper.
We give background material and some details of calculations for two recent papers [1,2] where we derived a path integral representation of the transition element for supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in one dimension (quantum mechanics). Our approach starts from a Hamiltonian $H(\hat{x}, \hat{p}, \hatψ, \hatψ^\dagger)$ with a priori operator ordering. By inserting a finite number of complete sets of $x$ eigenstates, $p$ eigenstates and fermionic coherent states, we obtain the discretized path integral and the discretized propagators and vertices in closed form. Takin…
We evaluate the path integral of the Poisson sigma model on sphere and study the correlators of quantum observables. We argue that for the path integral to be well-defined the corresponding Poisson structure should be unimodular. The construction of the finite dimensional BV theory is presented and we argue that it is responsible for the leading semiclassical contribution. For a (twisted) generalized Kahler manifold we discuss the gauge fixed action for the Poisson sigma model. Using the localization we prove that for the holomorphic Poisson structure the semiclassical result for the correlato…
We consider the N=1 supersymmetric two-dimensional non-linear sigma model with boundaries and nonzero B-field. By analysing the appropriate currents we describe the full set of boundary conditions compatible with N=1 superconformal symmetry. Using this result the problem of finding a correct action is discussed. We interpret the supersymmetric boundary conditions as a maximal integral submanifold of the target space manifold, and speculate about a new geometrical structure, the deformation of an almost product structure.
We introduce and study conformal field theories specified by $W-$algebras commuting with certain set of screening charges. These CFT's possess perturbations which define integrable QFT's. We establish that these QFT's have local and non-local Integrals of Motion and admit the perturbation theory in the weak coupling region. We construct factorized scattering theory which is consistent with non-local Integrals of Motion and perturbation theory. In the strong coupling limit the $S-$matrix of this QFT tends to the scattering matrix of the $O(N)$ sigma model. The perturbation theory, Bethe anzatz …
In this note we point out the striking relation between the conditions arising within geometric quantization and the non-perturbative Poisson sigma model. Starting from the Poisson sigma model, we analyze necessary requirements on the path integral measure which imply a certain integrality condition for the Poisson cohomology class $[α]$. The same condition was considered before by Crainic and Zhu but in a different context. In the case when $[α]$ is in the image of the sharp map we reproduce the Vaisman's condition for prequantizable Poisson manifolds. For integrable Poisson manifolds we show…
We consider the $\mathrm{O}(3)$ non-linear sigma-model, composed of three real scalar fields with a standard kinetic term and with a symmetry breaking potential in four spacetime dimensions. We show that this simple, geometrically motivated model, admits both self-gravitating, asymptotically flat, non-topological solitons and hairy black holes, when minimally coupled to Einstein's gravity, $without$ the need to introduce higher order kinetic terms in the scalar fields action. Both spherically symmetric and spinning, axially symmetric solutions are studied. The solutions are obtained under a an…
We investigate the ground-state energy of the integrable two dimensional $O(3)$ sigma model in a magnetic field. By determining a large number of perturbative coefficients we explore the closest singularities of the corresponding Borel function. We then confront its median resummation to the high precision numerical solution of the exact integral equation and observe that the leading exponentially suppressed contribution is not related to the asymptotics of the perturbative coefficients. By analytically expanding the integral equation we calculate the leading non-perturbative contributions up …
We study the stochastic quantization of two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model in the large $N$ limit. Our main tool is the {\it effective} Langevin equation with which we investigate nonperturbative phenomena and derive the results which are same as the path integral approach gives.
The non-Abelian T-dualization of the BTZ black hole is discussed in detail by using the Poisson-Lie T-duality in the presence of spectators. We explicitly construct a dual pair of sigma models related by Poisson-Lie symmetry. The original model is built on a $2+1$-dimensional manifold ${\cal M} \approx O \times \bf G$, where $\bf G$ as a two-dimensional real non-Abelian Lie group acts freely on ${\cal M}$, while $O$ is the orbit of $\bf G$ in ${\cal M}$. The findings of our study show that the original model indeed is canonically equivalent to the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) mo…
Nonlinear integral equations are proposed for the description of the full finite size spectrum of the 2-dimensional O(3) nonlinear sigma-model in a periodic box. Numerical results for the energy eigenvalues are compared to the rotator spectrum and perturbation theory for small volumes and with the recently proposed generalized Luscher formulas at large volumes.
Thermodynamics of the spin 1/2 XXZ model is studied in the critical regime using the quantum transfer matrix (QTM) approach. We find functional relations indexed by the Takahashi-Suzuki numbers among the fusion hierarchy of the QTM's (T-system) and their certain combinations (Y-system). By investigating analyticity of the latter, we derive a closed set of non-linear integral equations which characterize the free energy and the correlation lengths for both <sigma_j^{+} sigma_i^{-}> and <sigma_j^{z} sigma_i^{z}> at any finite temperatures. Concerning the free energy, they exactly coincide with T…
We revisit the problem of charged string pair creation in a constant external electric field. The string states are massive and creation of pairs from the vacuum is a tunnelling process, analogous to the Schwinger process where charged particle-anti-particle pairs are created by an electric field. We find the instantons in the worldsheet sigma model which are responsible for the tunnelling events. We evaluate the sigma model partition function in the multi-instanton sector in the WKB approximation which keeps the classical action and integrates the quadratic fluctuations about the solution. We…
We investigate emergent holography of weakly coupled two-dimensional hyperKähler sigma model on cotangent bundle of (N-1)-dimensional complex projective space at zero and finite temperature. The sigma model is motivated by the spacetime conformal field theory dual to the near-horizon geometry of Q1 D1-brane bound to Q5 D5-brane wrapped on four-torus times circle, where N = Q1*Q5. The sigma model admits nontrivial instanton for all N greater than or equal to 2, which serves as a local probe of emergent holographic spacetime. We define emergent geometry of the spacetime as that of instanton modu…
We propose TBA integral equations for 1-particle states in the O(n) non-linear sigma-model for even n. The equations are conjectured on the basis of the analytic properties of the large volume asymptotics of the problem, which is explicitly constructed starting from Luscher's asymptotic formula. For small volumes the mass gap values computed numerically from the TBA equations agree very well with results of three-loop perturbation theory calculations, providing support for the validity of the proposed TBA system.
We propose an integrable extension of nonlinear sigma model on the target space of Hermitian symmetric space (HSS). Starting from a discussion of soliton solutions of O(3) model and an integrally extended version of it, we construct general theory defined on arbitrary HSS by using the coadjoint orbit method. It is based on the exploitation of a covariantized canonical structure on HSS. This term results in an additional first-order derivative term in the equation of motion, which accommodates the zero curvature representation. Infinite conservation laws of nonlocal charges in this model are de…
We study the resurgent trans-series for the free energy of the two-dimensional O(4) sigma model in a magnetic field. Exploiting integrability, we obtain very high-order perturbative data, from which we can explore non-perturbative sectors. We are able to determine exactly the leading real-valued exponentially small terms, which we check against the direct numerical solution of the exact integral equation, and find complete agreement.
Particles in a curved space are classically described by a nonlinear sigma model action that can be quantized through path integrals. The latter require a precise regularization to deal with the derivative interactions arising from the nonlinear kinetic term. Recently, for maximally symmetric spaces, simplified path integrals have been developed: they allow to trade the nonlinear kinetic term with a purely quadratic kinetic term (linear sigma model). This happens at the expense of introducing a suitable effective scalar potential, which contains the information on the curvature of the space. T…
In this paper we consider axisymmetric black holes in supergravity and address the general issue of defining a first order description for them. The natural setting where to formulate the problem is the De Donder-Weyl-Hamilton-Jacobi theory associated with the effective two-dimensional sigma-model action describing the axisymmetric solutions. We write the general form of the two functions S_m defining the first-order equations for the fields. It is invariant under the global symmetry group G_(3) of the sigma-model. We also discuss the general properties of the solutions with respect to these g…
We consider the problem of calculating the Casimir energies in the winding sectors of Fateev's SS-model, which is an integrable two-parameter deformation of the O(4) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions. This problem lies beyond the scope of all traditional methods of integrable quantum field theory including the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and non-linear integral equations. Here we propose a solution based on a remarkable correspondence between classical and quantum integrable systems and express the winding energies in terms of certain solutions of the classical sinh-Gordon equation.
A sigma model formulation for static dilaton black holes with N Abelian gauge fields was presented. We proved uniqueness of static asymptotically flat spacetimes with non-degenerate black holes for the considered theory.
We study D-branes of N=2 supersymmetric sigma models. Supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models with 2-dimensional target space have D0,D1,D2-branes, which are realized as A-,B-type supersymmetric boundary conditions on the worldsheet. When we embed the models in the string theory, the Kahler potential is restricted and leads to a 2-dim black hole metric with a dilaton background. The D-branes in this model are susy cycles and consistent with the analysis of conjugacy classes. The generalized metrics with U(n) isometry is proposed and dynamics on them are realized by linear sigma models. We invest…
