We study the resurgent trans-series for the free energy of the two-dimensional O(4) sigma model in a magnetic field. Exploiting integrability, we obtain very high-order perturbative data, from which we can explore non-perturbative sectors. We are able to determine exactly the leading real-valued exponentially small terms, which we check against the direct numerical solution of the exact integral equation, and find complete agreement.
The vacuum energy density is obtained for the $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model. It is shown that non-perturbative contributions are connected with the square of the symmetry current of the group $O(N)$. This result is valid for $σ$- fields which are subject to the constraint.
We use the exact renormalization group (ERG) perturbatively to construct the Wilson action for the two-dimensional O(N) non-linear sigma model. The construction amounts to regularization of a non-linear symmetry with a momentum cutoff. A quadratically divergent potential is generated by the momentum cutoff, but its non-invariance is compensated by the jacobian of the non-linear symmetry transformation.
A topological sigma model based on the pure spinor formalism was recently proposed for the small radius limit of the AdS_5xS^5 superstring. Physical states in this model can be constructed by connecting holes on the worldsheet with Wilson lines of the worldsheet gauge field. The contribution of these states to the topological amplitude is claimed to reproduce the usual Feynman diagram expansion of gauge-invariant super-Yang-Mills correlation functions.
We investigate the ground-state energy of the integrable two dimensional $O(3)$ sigma model in a magnetic field. By determining a large number of perturbative coefficients we explore the closest singularities of the corresponding Borel function. We then confront its median resummation to the high precision numerical solution of the exact integral equation and observe that the leading exponentially suppressed contribution is not related to the asymptotics of the perturbative coefficients. By analytically expanding the integral equation we calculate the leading non-perturbative contributions up …
A scaling hypothesis for the n-particle spectral densities of the O(3) nonlinear sigma-model is described. It states that for large particle numbers the n-particle spectral densities are ``self-similar'' in being basically rescaled copies of a universal shape function. This can be viewed as a 2-dimensional, but non-perturbative analogue of the KNO scaling in QCD. Promoted to a working hypothesis, it allows one to compute the two point functions at ``all'' energy or length scales. In addition, the values of two non-perturbative constants (needed for a parameter-free matching of the perturbative…
In this paper, we study the RG flow in the non-linear sigma models obtained from a 2d N=(0,2) supersymmetric QCD. The sigma model is parameterized by a single Kahler modulus. We determine its exact non-perturbative beta function using holomorphy, triality and the knowledge of the infra-red fixed point.
Certain perturbative aspects of two-dimensional sigma models with (0,2) supersymmetry are investigated. The main goal is to understand in physical terms how the mathematical theory of ``chiral differential operators'' is related to sigma models. In the process, we obtain, for example, an understanding of the one-loop beta function in terms of holomorphic data. A companion paper will study nonperturbative behavior of these theories.
We investigate the relation between on-shell and zero-momentum non-perturbative quantities entering the parametrization of the two-point Green's function of two-dimensional non-linear O(N) sigma models. We present accurate estimates of ratios of mass-scales and renormalization constants, obtained by an analysis of the strong-coupling expansion of the two-point Green's function. These ratios allow to connect exact known on-shell results with typical zero-momentum lattice evaluations. Our results are supported by the 1/N-expansion.
Compact (ferro- and antiferromagnetic) sigma-models and noncompact (hyperbolic) sigma-models are compared in a lattice formulation in dimensions $d \geq 2$. While the ferro- and antiferromagnetic models are essentially equivalent, the qualitative difference to the noncompact models is highlighted. The perturbative and the large $N$ expansions are studied in both types of models and are argued to be asymptotic expansions on a finite lattice. An exact correspondence between the expansion coefficients of the compact and the noncompact models is established, for both expansions, valid to all order…
In this paper we begin the study of renormalizations in the heterotically deformed N=(0,2) CP(N-1) sigma models. In addition to the coupling constant g^2 of the undeformed N=(2,2) model, there is the second coupling constant γdescribing the strength of the heterotic deformation. We calculate both βfunctions, β_g and β_γat one loop, determining the flow of g^2 and γ. Under a certain choice of the initial conditions, the theory is asymptotically free. The βfunction for the ratio ρ=γ^2/g^2 exhibits an infrared fixed point at ρ={1}{2}. Formally this fixed point lies outside the validity of the one…
Coupling of `t Hooft's determinant term is investigated in the framework of the three flavor linear sigma model as a function of the chiral condensate. Using perturbation theory around the minimum point of the effective action, we calculate the renormalization group flow of the first field dependent correction to the coupling of the conventional U_A(1) breaking determinant term. It is found that at low temperatures mesonic fluctuations make the anomaly increase when the chiral condensate decreases. As an application, we analyze the effect at the zero temperature nuclear liquid-gas transition.
Recently, the author has proposed a generalization of the matrix and vector models approach to the theory of random surfaces and polymers. The idea is to replace the simple matrix or vector (path) integrals by gauge theory or non-linear sigma model (path) integrals. We explain how this solves one of the most fundamental limitation of the classic approach: we automatically obtain non-perturbative definitions in non-Borel summable cases. This is exemplified on the simplest possible examples involving O(N) symmetric non-linear sigma models with N-dimensional target spaces, for which we construct …
In this note we point out the striking relation between the conditions arising within geometric quantization and the non-perturbative Poisson sigma model. Starting from the Poisson sigma model, we analyze necessary requirements on the path integral measure which imply a certain integrality condition for the Poisson cohomology class $[α]$. The same condition was considered before by Crainic and Zhu but in a different context. In the case when $[α]$ is in the image of the sharp map we reproduce the Vaisman's condition for prequantizable Poisson manifolds. For integrable Poisson manifolds we show…
Nonlinear sigma models (NLSM) in d=3 have many interesting and non-trivial features, which were explored poorly in contrast with NLSM in d=2 and d=4. We present a few results from our study of the perturbative and non-perturbative properties of three-dimensional (3D) NLSM. i) We have shown that cancellation of ultra-violet (UV) divergences takes place in 3D extended (N=2,4) supersymmetric NLSM in low orders of the 1/n expansion. ii) We consider noncommutative extension of the 3D CP(n) model, and study low-energy dynamics of BPS solitons in this model. We also discuss briefly dynamics of non-BP…
It was shown that the non-perturbative properties of the vacuum are described by the quantum fluctuations around the classical background with zero canonical momentum. The vacuum state has been built and checked in the framework of the sigma models in two dimentions.
Exact massive S-matrices for two dimensional sigma models on symmetric spaces SU(2N)/Sp(N) and Sp(2P)/Sp(P)*Sp(P) are conjectured. They are checked by comparison of perturbative and non perturbative TBA calculations of free energy in a strong external field. We find the mass spectrum of the models and calculate their exact mass gap.
In general, perturbative expansions of observables in powers of the coupling constant in quantum field theories are asymptotic series. In many cases it is possible to apply resummation techniques to assign a unique finite value to an asymptotic series, but a particular pattern of divergence, the so-called renormalon, gives rise to non-perturbative ambiguities. The framework of Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory (NSPT), based on stochastic quantisation and the perturbative expansion of lattice fields, makes it possible to compute coefficients of perturbative series on the lattice. In this…
We study the non-perturbative dynamics of the two dimensional ${O(N)}$ and Grassmannian sigma models by using compactification with twisted boundary conditions on $\mathbb R \times S^1$, semi-classical techniques and resurgence. While the $O(N)$ model has no instantons for $N>3$, it has (non-instanton) saddles on $\mathbb R^2$, which we call 2d-saddles. On $\mathbb R \times S^1$, the resurgent relation between perturbation theory and non-perturbative physics is encoded in new saddles, which are associated with the affine root system of the ${\frak o}(N) $ algebra. These events may be viewed as…
We investigate infra-red dynamics of the non-linear sigma model in de Sitter space. In the presence of minimally coupled massless scalar fields, the de Sitter symmetry is dynamically broken and physical constants become time dependent. We find that the coupling constant of the non-linear sigma model becomes time dependent. The power counting arguments of the infra-red logarithms indicate that the cosmological constant also acquires time dependence. We find that such infra-red logarithms cancel out in a perturbative investigation up to the two loop level. We further demonstrate a non-perturbati…
We describe a covariant framework to construct a globalized version for the perturbative quantization of nonlinear split AKSZ Sigma Models on manifolds with and without boundary, and show that it captures the change of the quantum state as one changes the constant map around which one perturbs. This is done by using concepts of formal geometry. Moreover, we show that the globalized quantum state can be interpreted as a closed section with respect to an operator that squares to zero. This condition is a generalization of the modified Quantum Master Equation as in the BV-BFV formalism, which we …
We develop a perturbative approach to study the supersymmetric non-linear sigma model characterized by a generic coupling matrix in the strong coupling limit. The method allows us to calculate explicitly the moments of the eigenfunctions and the two-level correlation function in the lowest order of the perturbative expansion. We find that the obtained expressions are equivalent to the results derived before for the corresponding random matrix ensembles. Such an equivalence is elucidated and generalized to all orders of the perturbative expansion by mapping the sigma model onto the field theory…

Based on work done by Bonechi, Cattaneo, Felder and Zabzine on Poisson sigma models, we formally show that Kontsevich's star product can be obtained from the twisted convolution algebra of the geometric quantization of a Lie 2-groupoid, one which integrates the Poisson structure. We show that there is an analogue of the Poisson sigma model which is valued in Lie 1-groupoids and which can often be defined non-perturbatively; it can be obtained by symplectic reduction using the quantization of the Lie 2-groupoid. We call these groupoid-valued sigma models and we argue that, when they exist, they…
This work is dedicated to the study of both large-$N$ and perturbative quantum behaviors of Lifshitz nonlinear sigma models with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ in 2+1 dimensions. We discuss renormalization and renormalization group aspects with emphasis on the possibility of emergence of Lorentz invariance at low energies. Contrarily to the perturbative expansion, where in general the Lorentz symmetry restoration is delicate and may depend on stringent fine-tuning, our results provide a more favorable scenario in the large-$N$ framework. We also consider supersymmetric extension in this non…
A new transverse lattice model of $3+1$ Yang-Mills theory is constructed by introducing Wess-Zumino terms into the 2-D unitary non-linear sigma model action for link fields on a 2-D lattice. The Wess-Zumino terms permit one to solve the basic non-linear sigma model dynamics of each link, for discrete values of the bare QCD coupling constant, by applying the representation theory of non-Abelian current (Kac-Moody) algebras. This construction eliminates the need to approximate the non-linear sigma model dynamics of each link with a linear sigma model theory, as in previous transverse lattice for…
We calculate the beta-functions of the general massive (p,q) supersymmetric sigma model to two loop order using (1,0) superfields. The conditions for finiteness are discussed in relation to (p,q) supersymmetry. We also calculate the effective potential using component fields to one loop order and consider the possibility of perturbative breaking of supersymmetry. The effect of one loop finite local counter terms and the ultra-violet behaviour of the off-shell (p,q) models to all orders in perturbation theory are also addressed.
We study the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of the nonlinear O(N) sigma model in two and three spacetime dimensions using a scheme that combines an effective local Hybrid Monte Carlo update routine, blockspin transformations and a Monte Carlo demon method. In two dimensions our results verify perturbative renormalizability. In three dimensions, we determine the flow diagram of the theory for various $N$ and different truncations and find a non-trivial fixed point, which indicates non-perturbative renormalizability. It is related to the well-studied phase transition of the O(N) uni…
In the on-shell formalism (mostly used in perturbative quantum field theory) the entries of the time ordered product T are on-shell fields (i.e. the basic fields satisfy the free field equations). With that, (multi)linearity of T is incompatible with the Action Ward identity. This can be circumvented by using the off-shell formalism in which the entries of T are off-shell fields. To relate on- and off-shell formalism correctly, a map sigma from on-shell fields to off-shell fields was introduced axiomatically by Duetsch and Fredenhagen. In that paper it was shown that, in the case of one real s…
We investigate structure functions in the 2-dimensional (asymptotically free) non-linear O(n) sigma-models using the non-perturbative S-matrix bootstrap program. In particular the exact small (Bjorken) x behavior is derived. Structure functions in the special case of the n=3 model are accurately computed over the whole x range for $-q^2/M^2<10^5$, and some moments are compared with results from renormalized perturbation theory. Some results concerning the structure functions in the 1/n approximation are also presented.
The two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and the Noether current are used to probe the O(3) nonlinear sigma model in an energy range below 10^4 in units of the mass gap $m$. We argue that the form factor approach, with the form factor series trunctated at the 6-particle level, provides an almost exact solution of the model in this energy range. The onset of the (2-loop) perturbative regime is found to occur only at energies around $100m$.
An N=1, d=4 supersymmetric compactification of the perturbative heterotic string is described by a d=2 (0,2) superconformal field theory. The first-order marginal deformations of the internal (0,2) SCFT are in 1 to 1 correspondence with massless gauge-neutral scalars in the spacetime theory. Working at tree-level in the alpha' expansion, we describe these first order deformations for SCFTs with a (0,2) non-linear sigma model description. Our results clarify the structure of deformations of heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications and more general heterotic flux vacua.
The short-distance singularity of the product of a composite scalar field that deforms a field theory and an arbitrary composite field can be expressed geometrically by the beta functions, anomalous dimensions, and a connection on the theory space. Using this relation, we compute the connection perturbatively for the O(N) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions. We show that the connection becomes free of singularities at zero temperature only if we normalize the composite fields so that their correlation functions have well-defined limits at zero temperature.
The derivative expansion of the Wilsonian renormalization group generates additional terms in the effective beta-functions not present in the perturbative approach. Applied to the nonlinear sigma model, to lowest order the vanishing of the beta-function for the tachyon field generates an equation analogous to that found in open string field theory. Although the nonlinear term depends on the cut-off function, this arbitrariness can be removed by a rescaling of the tachyon field.
Motivated by string theory connection, a covariant procedure for perturbative calculation of the partition function of the two-dimensional generalized $σ$-model is considered. The importance of a consistent regularization of the measure in the path integral is emphasized. The partition function is computed for a number of specific 2-manifolds: sphere, disk and torus.
The three-point functions of two scalar fields $σ$ and the higher spin field $h^{(\ell)}$ of HS(4) on the one side and of their proposed holographic images $α$ and $\mathcal{J^{(\ell)}}$ of the minimal conformal O(N) sigma model of dimension three on the other side are evaluated at leading perturbative order and compared in order to fix the coupling constant of HS(4). This necessitates a careful analysis of the local current $Ψ^{(\ell)}$ to which $h^{(\ell)}$ couples in HS(4) and which is bilinear in $σ$.
The Parisi-Sourlas mechanism is exhibited in pure Yang-Mills theory. Using the new scalar degrees of freedom derived from the non-linear gauge condition, we show that the non-perturbative sector of Yang-Mills theory is equivalent to a 4D O(1,3) sigma model in a random field. We then show that the leading term of this equivalent theory is invariant under supersymmetry transformations where (x^{2}+\thetabarθ) is unchanged. This leads to dimensional reduction proving the equivalence of the non-perturbative sector of Yang-Mills theory to a 2D O(1,3) sigma model.
Four different types of free energies are computed by both thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz (TBA) techniques and by weak coupling perturbation theory in an integrable one-parameter deformation of the O(4) principal chiral sigma-model (with SU(2)xU(1) symmetry). The model exhibits both `fermionic' and `bosonic' type free energies and in all cases the perturbative and the TBA results are in perfect agreement, strongly supporting the correctness of the proposed S matrix. The mass gap is also computed in terms of the Lambda parameters of the modified minimal substraction scheme and a lattice regulariz…
We study the two loop quantum equivalence of sigma models related by Buscher's T-duality transformation. The computation of the two loop perturbative free energy density is performed in the case of a certain deformation of the SU(2) principal sigma model, and its T-dual, using dimensional regularization and the geometric sigma model perturbation theory. We obtain agreement between the free energy density expressions of the two models.
We analyze the free energy of the integrable two dimensional O(4) sigma model in a magnetic field. We use Volin's method to extract high number (2000) of perturbative coefficients with very high precision. The factorial growth of these coefficients are regulated by switching to the Borel transform, where we perform several asymptotic analysis. High precision data allowed to identify Stokes constants and alien derivatives with exact expressions. These reveal a nice resurgence structure which enables to formulate the first few terms of the ambiguity free trans-series. We check these results agai…
The renormalization procedure of the non-linear SU(2) sigma model in D=4 proposed in hep-th/0504023 and hep-th/0506220 is here tested in a truly non-trivial case where the non-linearity of the functional equation is crucial. The simplest example, where the non-linear term contributes, is given by the two-loop amplitude involving the insertion of two ϕ_0 (the constraint of the non-linear sigma model) and two flat connections. In this case we verify the validity of the renormalization procedure: the recursive subtraction of the pole parts at D=4 yields amplitudes that satisfy the defining functi…
A class of two-dimensional sigma models interpolating between $CP^1$ and the $SU(2)$ principal chiral model is discussed. We add the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten term and examine the renormalization group flow of the two coupling constants which characterize the model under consideration. The model flows to the $SU(2)$ WZNW conformal field theory in the IR. There is an ordinary phase in which the model flows from the asymptotically free $CP^1$ model coupled to an extra massless degree of freedom in the UV. At higher loop order we discover that there is also a phase in which the model can flow fr…
Sigma models describing low energy effective actions on D0-brane probes with N=8 supercharges are studied in detail using a manifestly d=1, N=4 super-space formalism. Two 0+1 dimensional N=4 multiplets together with their general actions are constructed. We derive the condition for these actions to be N=8 supersymmetric and apply these techniques to various D-brane configurations. We find that if in addition to N=8 supersymmetry the action must also have Spin(5) invariance, the form of the sigma model metric is uniquely determined by the one-loop result and is not renormalized perturbatively o…
We prove that non-coisotropic branes in the Poisson-Sigma model are allowed at the quantum level. When the brane is defined by second-class constraints, the perturbative quantization of the model yields the Kontsevich's star product associated to the Dirac bracket on the brane. We also discuss the quantization when both first and second-class constraints are present.
For lattice models with compact field integration (nonlinear sigma models over compact manifolds and gauge theories with compact groups) and satisfying some discrete symmetry, the change of sign of the bare coupling g_0^2 at zero results in a mere discontinuity in the average energy rather than the catastrophic instability occurring in theories with integration over arbitrarily large fields. This indicates that the large order of perturbative series and the non-perturbative contributions should have unexpected features. Using the large-N limit of 2-dimensional nonlinear O(N) sigma model, we di…
An $S$-matrix is proposed for the two dimensional O(3) $σ$-model with a dynamical $θ$-term (axion model). Exploiting an Abelian T-duality transformation connecting the axion model to an integrable SU(2)$\times$U(1) symmetric principal $σ$-model, strong evidence is presented for the correctness of the proposed $S$-matrix by comparing the perturbatively calculated free energies with the ones based on the Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz. This T-duality transformation also leads to a new Lax-pair for both models. The quantum non-integrability of the O(3) $σ$-model with a {\sl constant} $θ$-term, in c…
The vacuum energy density is calculated for the $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma models in two dimensions. To obtain $\varepsilon_{vac}$ we assume that each point of the space in which non-perturbative f\/ields are determined can be replaced by a sphere $S^2$ having a small radius $r$ which approaches zero at the very end of the calculation. This assumption allows to get the classical f\/ields generating v.e.v. of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor.
We explore the O(N)-invariant Non-Linear Sigma Model (NLSM) in a different perturbative regime from the usual relativistic-free-field one, by using non-canonical basic commutation relations adapted to the underlying O(N) symmetry of the system, which also account for the non-trivial (non-flat) geometry and topology of the target manifold.
We construct the path integral for one-dimensional non-linear sigma models, starting from a given Hamiltonian operator and states in a Hilbert space. By explicit evaluation of the discretized propagators and vertices we find the correct Feynman rules which differ from those often assumed. These rules, which we previously derived in bosonic systems \cite{paper1}, are now extended to fermionic systems. We then generalize the work of Alvarez-Gaumé and Witten \cite{alwi} by developing a framework to compute anomalies of an $n$-dimensional quantum field theory by evaluating perturbatively a corresp…
Recently it has been claimed that ordinary perturbation theory (OPT) gives incorrect weak coupling expansions for lattice O(N) non-linear sigma models in the infinite volume limit, and in particular that the two-dimensional non-abelian models are not asymptotically free, contrary to previous findings. Here it is argued that the problem occurs only for one-dimensional infinite lattices, and that in general, OPT gives correct expansions if physical quantities are first computed on a finite lattice, and the infinite volume limit is taken at the end. In one dimension the expansion is sensitive to …
The formulation of the non-linear sigma model in terms of flat connection allows the construction of a perturbative solution of a local functional equation encoding the underlying gauge symmetry. In this paper we discuss some properties of the solution at the one-loop level in D=4. We prove the validity of a weak power-counting theorem in the following form: although the number of divergent amplitudes is infinite only a finite number of divergent amplitudes have to be renormalized. The proof uses the linearized functional equation of which we provide the general solution in terms of local func…
Quantum non-local charges are central to the quantum integrability of a sigma-model. In this paper we study the quantum consistency and UV finiteness of non-local charges of string theory in AdS(5)xS(5). We use the pure spinor formalism. We develop the near-flat space expansion of the transfer matrix and calculate the one-loop divergences. We find that the logarithmic divergences cancel at the level of one loop. This gives strong support to the quantum integrability of the full string theory. We develop a calculational setup for the renormalization group analysis of Wilson line type of operato…
Many N=1 heterotic string compactifications exhibit physically mysterious singularities at codimension one in the moduli space of vacua. At these singularities, Yukawa couplings of charged fields develop poles as a function of the moduli. We explain these conformal field theory singularities, in a class of examples, as arising from non-perturbative gauge dynamics of non-perturbative gauge bosons (whose gauge coupling is the sigma model coupling) in the string theory.
We study the renormalization group flow of the O(N) non-linear sigma model in arbitrary dimensions. The effective action of the model is truncated to fourth order in the derivative expansion and the flow is obtained by combining the non-perturbative renormalization group and the background field method. We investigate the flow in three dimensions and analyze the phase structure for arbitrary N. The corresponding results about the critical properties of the models will serve as a reference for upcoming simulations with the Monte-Carlo renormalization group.
We investigate the phase structure of the compactified $2$-dimensional nonlinear $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ flag sigma model with respect to two $θ$-terms. Based on the circle compactification with the ${\mathbb Z}_{3}$-twisted boundary condition, which preserves an 't Hooft anomaly of the original uncompactified theory, we perform the semiclassical analysis based on the dilute instanton gas approximation (DIGA). We clarify classical vacua of the theory and derive fractional instanton solutions connecting these vacua. The resulting phase structure based on DIGA exhibits the quantum phase transitions and t…
The gradient flow equation in the 2D $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model with lattice regularization is solved in the leading order of the $1/N$ expansion. By using this solution, we analytically compute the thermal expectation value of a lattice energy--momentum tensor defined through the gradient flow. The expectation value reproduces thermodynamic quantities obtained by the standard large-$N$ method. This analysis confirms that the above lattice energy--momentum tensor restores the correct normalization automatically in the continuum limit, in a system with a non-perturbative mass gap.
A four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric non-linear sigma-model with the Eguchi-Hanson (ALE) target space and a non-vanishing central charge is rewritten to a classically equivalent and formally renormalizable gauged `linear' sigma-model over a non-compact coset space in N=2 harmonic superspace by making use of an N=2 vector gauge superfield as the Lagrange multiplier. It is then demonstrated that the N=2 vector gauge multiplet becomes dynamical after taking into account one-loop corrections due to quantized hypermultiplets. This implies the appearance of a composite gauge boson, a composite chir…
Explicit solutions to the conifold equations with complex dimension $n=3,4$ in terms of {\it{complex coordinates (fields)}} are employed to construct the Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on these manifolds. The Kähler 2-forms are found to be closed. The complex realization of these conifold metrics are used in the construction of 2-dimensional non-linear sigma model with the conifolds as target spaces. The action for the sigma model is shown to be bounded from below. By a suitable choice of the 'integration constants', arising in the solution of Ricci flatness requirement, the metric and the equation…
