We explore the O(N)-invariant Non-Linear Sigma Model (NLSM) in a different perturbative regime from the usual relativistic-free-field one, by using non-canonical basic commutation relations adapted to the underlying O(N) symmetry of the system, which also account for the non-trivial (non-flat) geometry and topology of the target manifold.
Consistent boundary conditions for Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwartz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ) sigma models and the corresponding boundary theories are analyzed. As their mathematical structures, we introduce a generalization of differential graded symplectic manifolds, called twisted QP manifolds, in terms of graded symplectic geometry, canonical functions, and QP pairs. We generalize the AKSZ construction of topological sigma models to sigma models with Wess-Zumino terms and show that all the twisted Poisson-like structures known in the literature can actually be naturally realized as boundary conditio…
This paper is devoted to the canonical analysis of non-linear sigma model that describes motion of non-relativistic string on stringy Newton-Cartan background. We determine structure of constraints of this string and compare resulting Hamiltonian with previous proposal of non-relativistic string on Newton-Cartan background.
We prove that a transformation, conjectured in our previous work, between phase-space variables in $\s$-models related by Poisson-Lie T-duality is indeed a canonical one. We do so by explicitly demonstrating the invariance of the classical Poisson brackets. This is the first example of a class of $\s$-models with no isometries related by canonical transformations. In addition we discuss generating functionals of canonical transformations in generally non-isometric, bosonic and supersymmetric $\s$-models and derive the complete set of conditions that determine them. We apply this general formal…
Many authors - beginning with Bekenstein - have suggested that the energy levels E_n of a quantized isolated Schwarzschild black hole have the form E_n = sigma sqrt{n} E_P, n=1,2,..., sigma =O(1), with degeneracies g^n. In the present paper properties of a system with such a spectrum, considered as a quantum canonical ensemble, are discussed: Its canonical partition function Z(g,beta=1/kT), defined as a series for g<1, obeys the 1-dimensional heat equation. It may be extended to values g>1 by means of an integral representation which reveals a cut of Z(g,beta) in the complex g-plane from g=1 t…
We prove that the doubly lambda-deformed sigma-models, which include integrable cases, are canonically equivalent to the sum of two single lambda-deformed models. This explains the equality of the exact beta-functions and current anomalous dimensions of the doubly lambda-deformed sigma-models to those of two single lambda-deformed models. Our proof is based upon agreement of their Hamiltonian densities and of their canonical structure. Subsequently, we show that it is possible to take a well defined non-Abelian type limit of the doubly-deformed action. Last, but not least, by extending the abo…
We formulate four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on Hermitian symmetric spaces with higher derivative terms, free from the auxiliary field problem and the Ostrogradski's ghosts, as gauged linear sigma models. We then study Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield equations preserving 1/2 or 1/4 supersymmetries. We find that there are distinct branches, that we call canonical ($F=0$) and non-canonical ($F\neq 0$) branches, associated with solutions to auxiliary fields $F$ in chiral multiplets. For the ${\mathbb C}P^N$ model, we obtain a supersymmetric ${\mathbb C}P^N$…
We study the canonical structure of the $SU(N)$ non-linear Sigma-model in a polynomial, first-order representation. The fundamental variables in this description are a non-Abelian vector field L_mu and a non-Abelian antisymmetric tensor field theta_{mu nu}, which constrains L_{mu} to be a `pure gauge' (F_{mu nu}(L) = 0) field. The second-class constraints that appear as a consequence of the first-order nature of the Lagrangian are solved, and the reduced phase-space variables explicitly found. We also treat the first-class constraints due to the gauge-invariance under transformations of the an…
Canonical energy is a valuable tool for analyzing the linear stability of black hole spacetimes; positivity of canonical energy for all perturbations implies mode stability, whereas the failure of positivity for any perturbation implies instability. Nevertheless, even in the case of $4$-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime --- which is known to be stable --- manifest positivity of the canonical energy is difficult to establish, due to the presence of constraints on the initial data as well as the gauge dependence of the canonical energy integrand. Consideration of perturbations generated by a H…
We introduce and study conformal field theories specified by $W-$algebras commuting with certain set of screening charges. These CFT's possess perturbations which define integrable QFT's. We establish that these QFT's have local and non-local Integrals of Motion and admit the perturbation theory in the weak coupling region. We construct factorized scattering theory which is consistent with non-local Integrals of Motion and perturbation theory. In the strong coupling limit the $S-$matrix of this QFT tends to the scattering matrix of the $O(N)$ sigma model. The perturbation theory, Bethe anzatz …
We construct a perturbation theory for the SU(2) non-linear Sigma-model in 2+1 dimensions using a polynomial, first-order formulation, where the variables are a non-Abelian vector field L_mu (the left SU(2) current), and a non-Abelian pseudovector field $θ_μ$, which imposes the condition F_{mu nu}(L) = 0. The coordinates on the group do not appear in the Feynman rules, but their scattering amplitudes are easily related to those of the currents. We show that all the infinities affecting physical amplitudes at one-loop order can be cured by normal ordering, presenting the calculation of the full…
The canonical Poisson structure of nonlinear sigma-model is presented as a Lie-Poisson r-matrix bracket on coadjoint orbits. It is shown that the Poisson structure of this model is determined by some `hidden singularities' of the Lax matrix.
Apparently non-invariant terms (ANTs) which appear in loop diagrams for nonlinear sigma models (NLSs) are revisited in lattice perturbation theory. The calculations have been done mostly with dimensional regularization so far. In order to establish that the existence of ANTs is independent of the regularization scheme, and of the potential ambiguities in the definition of the Jacobian of the change of integration variables from group elements to "pion" fields, we employ lattice regularization, in which everything (including the Jacobian) is well-defined. We show explicitly that lattice perturb…
We compare results from the Polyakov linear-sigma model (PLSM) in optimized perturbation theory (OPT) with the mean-field approximation (MFA). At finite temperatures and chemical potentials, the chiral condensates and the decofinement order parameters, the thermodynamic pressure, the pseudo-critical temperatures, the subtracted condensates, the second- and high-order moments of various conserved charges (cumulants) obtained in MFA are compared with OPT and also confronted to available lattice QCD simulations. We conclude that when moving from lower- to higher-order moments of various quantum c…
We extend our analysis in [arXiv:0801.4782] and show that the chiral algebras of (0,2) sigma models are totally trivialized by worldsheet instantons for all complete flag manifolds of compact semisimple Lie groups. Consequently, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. Our results verify Stolz's idea that there are no harmonic spinors on the loop spaces of these flag manifolds. Moreover, they also imply that the kernels of certain twisted Dirac operators on these spaces will be empty under a "quantum" deformation of their geometries.
We compare Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and the Linear Sigma Model (LSM) as realizations of low energy QCD for light mesons in a chirally imbalanced medium. The relations between the low-energy constants of the Chiral Lagrangian and the corresponding constants of the Linear Sigma Model are established as well as the expressions for the decay constant of the $π$-meson in the medium and the mass of the $a_0$. In the large $N_c$ count taken from QCD the correspondence of ChPT and LSM is remarkably good and give a solid ground for search of chiral imbalance manifestation in pion physics. A po…
We establish from first principles a perturbative framework that allows us to compute reaction rates for processes taking place in nonequilibrium $O (N)$ linear-sigma systems in broken phase. The system of our concern is quasiuniform system near equilibrium or nonequilibrium quasistationary system. We employ the closed-time-path formalism and use the so-called gradient approximation. No further approximation is introduced. In the course of construction of the framework, we obtain the gap equation that determines the effective masses of $π$ and of $σ$, and the generalized Boltzmann equation tha…
We canonically quantize $O(D+2)$ nonlinear sigma models (NLSMs) with theta term on arbitrary smooth, closed, connected, oriented $D$-dimensional spatial manifolds $\mathcal{M}$, with the goal of proving the suitability of these models for describing symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of bosons in $D$ spatial dimensions. We show that in the disordered phase of the NLSM, and when the coefficient $θ$ of the theta term is an integer multiple of $2π$, the theory on $\mathcal{M}$ has a unique ground state and a finite energy gap to all excitations. We also construct the ground state wave fu…
We consider two dimensional non linear sigma models on few symmetric superspaces, which are supergroup manifolds of coset type. For those spaces where one loop beta function vanishes, two loop beta function is calculated and is shown to be zero. Vanishing of beta function in all orders of perturbation theory is shown for the principal chiral models on group supermanifolds with zero Killing form. Sigma models on symmetric (super) spaces on supergroup manifold $G/H$ are known to be classically integrable. We investigate a possibility to extend an argument of absence of quantum anomalies in non l…
Recently it has been claimed that ordinary perturbation theory (OPT) gives incorrect weak coupling expansions for lattice O(N) non-linear sigma models in the infinite volume limit, and in particular that the two-dimensional non-abelian models are not asymptotically free, contrary to previous findings. Here it is argued that the problem occurs only for one-dimensional infinite lattices, and that in general, OPT gives correct expansions if physical quantities are first computed on a finite lattice, and the infinite volume limit is taken at the end. In one dimension the expansion is sensitive to …
Non linear sigma models on Riemannian symmetric spaces constitute the most general class of classical non-linear sigma models which are known to be integrable. Using the current algebra structure of these models their canonical structure is analysed and it is shown that their non ultralocal fundamental Poisson bracket relation is governed by a field dependent non antisymmetric r-matrix obeying a dynamical Yang Baxter equation. Contribution presented at the XIX ICGTMP Salamanca June 92
We present new non-Ricci-flat Kahler metrics with U(N) and O(N) isometries as target manifolds of superconformally invariant sigma models with an anomalous dimension. They are so-called Ricci solitons, special solutions to a Ricci-flow equation. These metrics explicitly contain the anomalous dimension and reduce to Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on the canonical line bundles over certain coset spaces in the limit of vanishing anomalous dimension.
The canonical structure of classical non-linear sigma models on Riemannian symmetric spaces, which constitute the most general class of classical non-linear sigma models known to be integrable, is shown to be governed by a fundamental Poisson bracket relation that fits into the $r$-$s$-matrix formalism for non-ultralocal integrable models first discussed by Maillet. The matrices $r$ and $s$ are computed explicitly and, being field dependent, satisfy fundamental Poisson bracket relations of their own, which can be expressed in terms of a new numerical matrix~$c$. It is proposed that all these P…
The Virasoro master equation (VME) describes the general affine-Virasoro construction $T=L^{ab}J_aJ_b+iD^a \dif J_a$ in the operator algebra of the WZW model, where $L^{ab}$ is the inverse inertia tensor and $D^a $ is the improvement vector. In this paper, we generalize this construction to find the general (one-loop) Virasoro construction in the operator algebra of the general non-linear sigma model. The result is a unified Einstein-Virasoro master equation which couples the spacetime spin-two field $L^{ab}$ to the background fields of the sigma model. For a particular solution $L_G^{ab}$, th…
The off-shell dynamics of the O(3) nonlinear sigma-model is probed in terms of spectral densities and two-point functions by means of the form factor approach. The exact form factors of the Spin field, Noether-current, EM-tensor and the topological charge density are computed up to 6-particles. The corresponding $n\leq 6$ particle spectral densities are used to compute the two-point functions, and are argued to deviate at most a few per mille from the exact answer in the entire energy range below 10^3 in units of the mass gap. To cover yet higher energies we propose an extrapolation scheme to …
In QFT the effective potential is an important tool to study symmetry breaking phenomena. It is known that, in some theories, the canonical approach and the path-integral approach yield different effective potentials. In this paper we investigate this for the Euclidean N=2 linear sigma model. Both the Green's functions and the effective potential will be computed in three different ways. The relative merits of the various approaches are discussed.
Quantum Yangian symmetry in several sigma models with supergroup or supercoset as target is established. Starting with a two-dimensional conformal field theory that has current symmetry of a Lie superalgebra with vanishing Killing form we construct non-local charges and compute their properties. Yangian axioms are satisfied, except that the Serre relations only hold for a subsector of the space of fields. Yangian symmetry implies that correlation functions of fields in this sector satisfy Ward identities. We then show that this symmetry is preserved by certain perturbations of the conformal fi…
We discuss a new type of unitary perturbations around conformal theories inspired by the $σ$-model perturbation of the nonunitary WZNW model. We show that the nonunitary level $k$ WZNW model perturbed by its sigma model term goes to the unitary level $-k$ WZNW model. When plugged into the gauged WZNW model the given perturbation results in the perturbed gauged WZNW model which no longer describes a coset construction. We consider the BRST invariant generalization of the sigma model perturbation around the gauged WZNW model. In this way we obtain perturbed coset constructions. In the case of th…
In this paper we achieve the quantization of a particle moving on the $SU(2)$ group manifold, that is, the three-dimensional sphere $S^{3}$, by using group-theoretical methods. For this purpose, a fundamental role is played by contact, non-point symmetries, i.e., symmetries that leave the Poincaré-Cartan form semi-invariant at the classical level, although not necessarily the Lagrangian. Special attention is paid to the role played by the basic quantum commutators, which depart from the canonical, Heisenberg-Weyl ones, as well as the relationship between the integration measure in the Hilbert …
We discuss special perturbations of the gauged level $k$ WZNW model inspired by the $σ$-model perturbation of the nonunitary WZNW model. In the large $k$ limit there is a second conformal point in the vicinity of the ultarviolet fixed point. At the second critical point the conformal model has a rational Virasoro central charge which no longer corresponds to a coset construction. In spite of this fact the perturbative conformal model appears to be a unitary system as long as the underlying coset construction at the ultraviolet critical point is unitary.
This article lays out a complete framework for an effective theory of cosmological perturbations with corrections from canonical quantum gravity. Since several examples exist for quantum-gravity effects that change the structure of space-time, the classical perturbative treatment must be rethought carefully. The present discussion provides a unified picture of several previous works, together with new treatments of higher-order perturbations and the specification of initial states.
We explore the nonperturbative aspects of the chiral algebras of N = (0,2) sigma models, which perturbatively are intimately related to the theory of chiral differential operators (CDOs). The grading by charge and scaling dimension is anomalous if the first Chern class of the target space is nonzero. This has some nontrivial consequences for the chiral algebra. As an example, we study the case where the target space is CP^1, and show that worldsheet instantons trivialize the chiral algebra entirely. Consequently, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in this model. We then turn to a closer loo…
The relational formalism based on geometrical clocks and Dirac observables in linearized canonical cosmological perturbation theory is used to introduce an efficient method to find evolution equations for gauge invariant variables. Our method generalizes an existing technique by Pons, Salisbury and Sundermeyer [1, 2] to relate the evolution of gauge invariant observables with the one of gauge variant quantities, and is applied as a demonstration for the longitudinal and spatially flat gauges. Gauge invariant evolution equations for the Bardeen potential and the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable are der…
The evolution of the non-adiabatic pressure perturbation during inflation driven by two scalar fields is studied numerically for three different types of models. In the first model, the fields have standard kinetic terms. The other two models considered feature non-canonical kinetic terms; the first containing two fields which are coupled via their kinetic terms, and the second where one field has the standard kinetic term with the other field being a DBI field. We find that the evolution and the final amplitude of the non-adiabatic pressure perturbation depends strongly on the kinetic terms.

In quantum information theory, Fisher Information is a natural metric on the space of perturbations to a density matrix, defined by calculating the relative entropy with the unperturbed state at quadratic order in perturbations. In gravitational physics, Canonical Energy defines a natural metric on the space of perturbations to spacetimes with a Killing horizon. In this paper, we show that the Fisher information metric for perturbations to the vacuum density matrix of a ball-shaped region B in a holographic CFT is dual to the canonical energy metric for perturbations to a corresponding Rindler…
Tseytlin has recently proposed that an action functional exists whose gradient generates to all orders in perturbation theory the Renormalization Group (RG) flow of the target space metric in the worldsheet sigma model. The gradient is defined with respect to a metric on the space of coupling constants which is explicitly known only to leading order in perturbation theory, but at that order is positive semi-definite, as follows from Perelman's work on the Ricci flow. This gives rise to a monotonicity formula for the flow which is expected to fail only if the beta function perturbation series f…
We study second-order perturbations for a general non-canonical scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity, on the unperturbed FRW background, where metric fluctuations are neglected a priori. By employing different approaches to cosmological perturbation theory, we show that, even in this simplified set-up, the second-order perturbations to the stress tensor, the energy density and the pressure display potential instabilities, which are not present at linear order. The conditions on the Lagrangian under which these instabilities take place are provided. We also discuss briefly the significanc…
The nonlinear sigma model targeted on the coset supermanifold $CP^{1|1}=SU(2|1)/U(1|1)$ is derived in an attempt to describe the quasiclassical low-energy effective action for the doped $t-J$ model at the SUSY point, $J=2t.$ In spite of the fact that the supermanifold $CP^{1|1}$ indeed appears as the phase space of the strongly correlated electrons, the canonical $CP^{1|1}$ nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) is unable to capture the physics of strong correlations displayed by the SUSY $t-J$ model at any finite doping. This is due to the fact that, in this regime, the doping itself cannot be self-con…
We study the effect of primordial isocurvature perturbations on non-Gaussian properties of CMB temperature anisotropies. We consider generic forms of the non-linearity of isocurvature perturbations which can be applied to a wide range of theoretical models. We derive analytical expressions for the bispectrum and the Minkowski Functionals for CMB temperature fluctuations to describe the non-Gaussianity from isocurvature perturbations. We find that the isocurvature non-Gaussianity in the quadratic isocurvature model, where the isocurvature perturbation S is written as a quadratic function of the…
We argue that in models of inflation with two scalar fields and non-canonical kinetic terms there is a possibility of obtaining a red tilt of the power spectrum of curvature perturbations from noncanonicality-induced interactions between the curvature and isocurvature perturbations. We describe an extremely simple model realizing this idea, study numerically its predictions for the perturbations and discuss applications in realistic scenarios of inflation. We discuss to what extent in this model the scale of the inflationary potential can be decoupled from the amplitude of the density fluctuat…
Over the last few years, it was realised that non-canonical scalar fields can lead to the accelerated expansion in the early universe. The primordial spectrum in these scenarios not only shows near scale-invariance consistent with CMB observations, but also large primordial non-Gaussianity. Second-order perturbation theory is the primary theoretical tool to investigate such non-Gaussianity. However, it is still uncertain which quantities are gauge-invariant at second-order and their physical understanding therefore remains unclear. As an attempt to understand second order quantities, we conside…
Physical quantities in gauge theories have to be gauge-independent. However their evaluation can be greatly simplified by working in particular gauges. Since physical quantities have to be gauge invariant, it is important to establish an approach allowing the comparison of computations carried out in different gauges even beyond perturbation theory. We show that the dependence on the gauge parameter $α=0$ in Yang-Mills theories is controlled by a canonical flow that explicitly solves the Nielsen identities of the model. Green's functions in the $α=0$ gauge are given by amplitudes evaluated in …
By using the results of a high-statistics (O(10^7) measurements) Monte Carlo simulation we test several predictions of perturbation theory on the O(n) non-linear sigma-model in 2 dimensions. We study the O(3) and O(8) models on large enough lattices to have a good control on finite-size effects. The magnetic susceptibility and three different definitions of the correlation length are measured. We check our results with large-n expansions as well as with standard formulae for asymptotic freedom up to 4 loops in the standard and effective schemes. For this purpose the weak coupling expansions of…
We develop a theory of non-linear cosmological perturbations at superhorizon scales for a scalar field with a Lagrangian of the form $P(X,ϕ)$, where $X=-\partial^μϕ\partial_μϕ$ and $ϕ$ is the scalar field. We employ the ADM formalism and the spatial gradient expansion approach to obtain general solutions valid up to the second order in the gradient expansion. This formulation can be applied to, for example, DBI inflation models to investigate superhorizon evolution of non-Gaussianities. With slight modification, we also obtain general solutions valid up to the same order for a perfect fluid wi…
Canonical methods of quasiclassical dynamics make it possible to go beyond a strict background approximation for cosmological perturbations by including independent fields such as correlation degrees of freedom. New models are introduced and analyzed here for cosmological dynamics in the presence of quantum correlations between background and perturbations, as well as cross-correlations between different modes of a quantum field. Evolution equations for moments of a perturbation state reveal conditions required for inhomogeneity to build up out of an initial vacuum. A crucial role is played by…
We propose TBA integral equations for 1-particle states in the O(n) non-linear sigma-model for even n. The equations are conjectured on the basis of the analytic properties of the large volume asymptotics of the problem, which is explicitly constructed starting from Luscher's asymptotic formula. For small volumes the mass gap values computed numerically from the TBA equations agree very well with results of three-loop perturbation theory calculations, providing support for the validity of the proposed TBA system.
We investigate structure functions in the 2-dimensional (asymptotically free) non-linear O(n) sigma-models using the non-perturbative S-matrix bootstrap program. In particular the exact small (Bjorken) x behavior is derived. Structure functions in the special case of the n=3 model are accurately computed over the whole x range for $-q^2/M^2<10^5$, and some moments are compared with results from renormalized perturbation theory. Some results concerning the structure functions in the 1/n approximation are also presented.
For the study of topological vortices with non-minimal coupling, we built a kind of non-canonical O(3)-sigma model, with a Maxwell term modified by a dielectric function. Through the BPS formalism, an investigation is made on possible configurations of vortices in topological sectors of the sigma model and the real scalar field. For a particular ansatz, the solutions of the topological sector of the real scalar field are described by the known kink solutions. On the other hand, when studying the vortices in the non-minimal sector of the pure O(3)-sigma model, it is detected the emergence of so…
In this note we explore the possible marginal deformations of general (0,2) non-linear sigma-models, which arise as descriptions of the weakly-coupled (large radius) limits of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}= 1$ compactifications of the heterotic string, to lowest order in $α'$ and first order in conformal perturbation theory. The results shed light from the world-sheet perspective on the classical moduli space of such compactifications. This is a contribution to the proceedings of String-Math 2012.
We adress ourselves the question of the quantum equivalence of non abelian dualised $\si$-models on the simple example of the T-dualised $SU(2) \si$-model. This theory is classically canonically equivalent to the standard chiral $SU(2) \si$-model. It is known that the equivalence also holds at the first order in perturbations with the same $\be$ functions. However, this model has been claimed to be non-renormalisable at the two-loop order. The aim of the present work is the proof that it is - at least up to this order - still possible to define a correct quantum theory. Its target space metric…
We study Yang Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions, as an array of coupled (1+1)-dimensional principal chiral sigma models. This can be understood as an anisotropic limit where one of the space-time dimensions is discrete and the others are continuous. The $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ principal chiral sigma model in 1+1 dimensions is integrable, asymptotically free and has massive excitations. New exact form factors and correlation functions of the sigma model have recently been found by the author and P. Orland. In this paper, we use these new results to calculate physical quantities in (2+1)-dimensional Ya…
Dark energy must cluster in order to be consistent with the equivalence principle. The background evolution can be effectively modelled by either a scalar field or by a barotropic fluid. The fluid model can be used to emulate perturbations in a scalar field model of dark energy, though this model breaks down at large scales. In this paper we study evolution of dark energy perturbations in canonical scalar field models: the classes of thawing and freezing models. The dark energy equation of state evolves differently in these classes. In freezing models, the equation of state deviates from that of …
In this thesis we investigate quantum aspects of the Green-Schwarz superstring in various AdS backgrounds relevant for the AdS/CFT correspondence, providing several examples of perturbative computations in the corresponding integrable sigma-models. We start by reviewing in details the supercoset construction of the superstring action in $AdS_5 \times S^5$, pointing out the limits of this procedure for $AdS_4$ and $AdS_3$ backgrounds. For the $AdS_4 \times CP^3$ case we give a thorough derivation of an alternative action, based on the double-dimensional reduction of eleven-dimensional super-mem…
We construct a topological Chern-Simons sigma model on a Riemannian three-manifold M with gauge group G whose hyperkahler target space X is equipped with a G-action. Via a perturbative computation of its partition function, we obtain new topological invariants of M that define new weight systems which are characterized by both Lie algebra structure and hyperkahler geometry. In canonically quantizing the sigma model, we find that the partition function on certain M can be expressed in terms of Chern-Simons knot invariants of M and the intersection number of certain G-equivariant cycles in the m…
We use the canonical energy method of Hollands and Wald to study the stability properties of asymptotically flat, stationary solutions to a very general class of theories, consisting of a set of coupled scalar fields and p-form gauge fields, minimally coupled to gravity. We find that, provided certain very weak assumptions are made on the coupling coefficients, the canonical energy method can be extended to this class of theories. In particular, we construct a quadratic form E on initial data perturbations, with the properties that E > 0 on all perturbations indicates stability, while E < 0 on…
Coupling of `t Hooft's determinant term is investigated in the framework of the three flavor linear sigma model as a function of the chiral condensate. Using perturbation theory around the minimum point of the effective action, we calculate the renormalization group flow of the first field dependent correction to the coupling of the conventional U_A(1) breaking determinant term. It is found that at low temperatures mesonic fluctuations make the anomaly increase when the chiral condensate decreases. As an application, we analyze the effect at the zero temperature nuclear liquid-gas transition.
