We study the contributions of off-resonant transitions to the dynamics of a system of N multilevel atoms sharing one excitation and interacting with the quantized vector electromagnetic field. The Rotating Wave Approximation significantly simplifies the derivation of the equations of motion describing the collective atomic dynamics, but it leads to an incorrect expression for the dispersive part of the atom-atom interaction terms. For the case of two-level atoms and a scalar electromagnetic field, it turns out that the atom-atom interaction can be recovered correctly if integrals over the photon mode frequencies are extended to incorporate negative values. We explicitly derive the atom-atom interaction for multi-level atoms, coupled to the full vector electromagnetic field, and we recover also in this general case the validity of the results obtained by the extension to negative frequencies of the formulas derived with the Rotating Wave Approximation.
We investigate experimentally and theoretically the collective coupling between atoms with multilevel ground state manifolds and an optical cavity mode. In our setup the cavity field optically pumps populations among the ground states. The ensuing dynamics can be conveniently described by means of an effective dynamical atom-cavity coupling strength that depends on the occupation of the individual states and their coupling strengths with the cavity mode. This leads to a dynamical backaction of the atomic populations on the atom-cavity coupling strength which results in a non-exponential relaxa…
We introduce a new set of quantum channels: resonant multilevel amplitude damping (ReMAD) channels. Among other instances, they can describe energy dissipation effects in multilevel atomic systems induced by the interaction with a zero-temperature bosonic environment. At variance with the already known class of multilevel amplitude damping (MAD) channels, this new class of maps allows the presence of an environment unable to discriminate transitions with identical energy gaps. After characterizing the algebra of their composition rules, by analyzing the qutrit case, we show that this new set o…
We analyze the dynamics of quantum beats in a system of two V-type three-level atoms coupled to a waveguide. We show that quantum beats can be collectively enhanced or suppressed, akin to Dicke super- and sub-radiance, depending on the interatomic separation and the initial correlations between the atoms. In particular, the interference properties of the collective beats are determined by the distance between the atoms modulo the beat wavelength. We study the collective atomic and field dynamics, illustrating a crossover from a Markovian to a non-Markovian regime as the atomic separation becom…
Macroscopic resonant tunneling (MRT) in flux qubits is an important experimental tool for extracting information about noise produced by a qubit's surroundings. Here we present a detailed derivation of the MRT signal in the RF-SQUID flux qubit allowing for effects of flux and charge fluctuations on the interwell and intrawell transitions in the system. Taking into consideration transitions between the ground state in the initial well and excited states in the target well enable us to characterize both flux and charge noise source affecting the operation of the flux qubit. The MRT peak is forme…
We investigate the collective decay dynamics of atoms with a generic multilevel structure (angular momenta $F\leftrightarrow F'$) coupled to two light modes of different polarization inside a cavity. In contrast to two-level atoms, we find that multilevel atoms can harbour eigenstates that are perfectly dark to cavity decay even within the subspace of permutationally symmetric states (collective Dicke manifold). The dark states arise from destructive interference between different internal transitions and are shown to be entangled. Remarkably, the superradiant decay of multilevel atoms can end…
The optical properties of sub-wavelength arrays of atoms or other quantum emitters have attracted significant interest recently. For example, the strong constructive or destructive interference of emitted light enables arrays to function as nearly perfect mirrors, support topological edge states, and allow for exponentially better quantum memories. In these proposals, the assumed atomic structure was simple, consisting of a unique electronic ground state. Within linear optics, the system is then equivalent to a periodic array of classical dielectric particles, whose periodicity supports the em…

We experimentally study resonant light scattering by a one-dimensional randomly filled chain of cold two-level atoms. By a local measurement of the light scattered along the chain, we observe constructive interferences in light-induced dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms. They lead to a shift of the collective resonance despite the average interatomic distance being larger than the wavelength of the light. This result demonstrates that strong collective effects can be enhanced by structuring the geometrical arrangement of the ensemble. We also explore the high intensity regime where a…

We report the realization of a strong coupling between a Gd$^{3+}$ spin ensemble hosted in a scheelite (CaWO$_4$) single crystal and the resonant mode of a coplanar stripline superconducting cavity leading to a large separation of spin-photon states of 146 MHz. The interaction is well described by the Dicke model and the crystal-field Hamiltonian of the multilevel spin system. We observe a change of the crystal-field parameters due to the presence of photons in the cavity that generates a significant perturbation of the crystal ground state. Using finite-element calculations, we numerically es…
In this paper, we demonstrate the infrared photoluminescence emission from Ge(Si) quantum dots enhanced with collective Mie modes of silicon nanopillars. We show that the excitation of band edge dipolar modes of a linear nanopillar array results in strong reshaping of the photoluminescence spectra. Among other collective modes, the magnetic dipolar mode with the polarization along the array axis contributes the most to the emission spectrum exhibiting an experimentally measured Q-factor of around 500 for an array of 11 pillars. The results belong to the first experimental evidence of light emi…
We report coherent interactions within an ensemble of silicon-vacancy color centers in diamond. The interactions are ascribed to resonant dipole-dipole coupling. Further, we demonstrate control over resonant center pairs by using a driving optical pulse to induce collective, interaction-enabled Rabi-oscillations in the ensemble. Non-resonant center pairs do not undergo collective oscillations.
Abstract We investigate the spectral shift in collective forward scattering for a cold dense atomic cloud. The shift, sometimes called collective Lamb shift, results from resonant dipole-dipole interaction mediated by real and virtual photon exchange, forming many-body states displaying various super- and subradiant spectral behavior. The scattering spectrum reflects the overall radiative behavior from these states. However, it also averages out the radiative details associated with a single collective state, causing ambiguity in explaining the origin of the spectral shift and raising controve…
We study the collective emission of a beam of atomic dipoles into an optical cavity. Our focus lies on the effect of a finite detuning between the atomic transition frequency and the cavity resonance frequency. By developing a theoretical description of the coupled atom-cavity dynamics we analyze the stationary atomic configurations including a superradiant phase where the atoms undergo continuous monochromatic collective emission. In addition, we derive an analytical formula for the cavity pulling coefficient which characterizes the displacement of the emission frequency towards the cavity fr…
Spin-polarised atomic ensembles probed by light based on the Faraday interaction are a versatile platform for numerous applications in quantum metrology and quantum information processing. Here we consider an ensemble of Alkali atoms that are continuously optically pumped and probed. Due to the collective scattering of photons at large optical depth, the steady state of atoms does not correspond to an uncorrelated tensor-product state, as is usually assumed. We introduce a self-consistent method to approximate the steady state including the pair correlations, taking into account the multilevel…
Light propagation in disordered media is a fundamental and important problem in optics and photonics. In particular, engineering light-matter interaction in disordered cold atomic ensembles is one of the central topics in modern quantum and atomic optics. The collective response of dense atomic gases under light excitation, which crucially depends on the spatial distribution of atoms and the geometry of the ensemble, has important impacts on quantum technologies like quantum sensors, atomic clocks and quantum information storage. Here we analyze near-resonant light transmission in two-dimensio…
Resonant dipole-dipole interaction (RDDI) is ubiquitous in light-matter interacting systems and is responsible for many fascinating properties of collective radiations. Here we theoretically investigate the role of RDDI in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The resonant dipole-dipole interactions manifest in the cooperative spontaneous emission of the probe light transition, which give rise a broadened linewidth and associated collective frequency shift. This cooperative linewidth originates from the nonlocal and long-range RDDI, which can be determined by the atomic density, opti…
We propose a method for transferring atoms to a target quantum state for a multilevel quantum system with sequentially increasing, but otherwise unknown, energy splitting. This is achieved with a feedback algorithm that processes off-resonant optical measurements of state populations during adiabatic rapid passage in real-time. Specifically, we reliably perform the transfer $|F=2,m_F=2\rangle \rightarrow |1,1\rangle \rightarrow |2,1\rangle$ for a sample of ultracold $^{87}$Rb in the presence of a random external magnetic field.
Rayleigh scattering is usually considered to be the elastic scattering of photons from sub-wavelength physical objects, such as small particles or molecules. Here, we present the spectroscopic study of the scattering properties of molecules embedded in an optical cavity under strong coupling conditions, where the collective interaction between the molecules and the cavity gives rise to composite light-matter excitations known as cavity polaritons. We show that the polaritonic states exhibit strong resonant Rayleigh scattering, reaching 25% efficiency. Since the polaritonic wavefunctions in suc…
We consider an ensemble of diatomic molecules resonantly coupled to an optical cavity under strong coupling conditions at normal incidence. Photodissociation dynamics is examined via direct numerical integration of the coupled Maxwell-Schrodinger equations with molecular ro-vibrational degrees of freedom explicitly taken into account. It is shown that the dissociation is significantly affected (slowed down) when the system is driven at its polaritonic frequencies. The observed effect is demonstrated to be of transient nature and has no classical analog. An intuitive explanation of the dissocia…
We study electric dipole spin resonance caused by sub-terahertz (THz) radiation in a multilevel finite-size quantum dot formed in a nanowire focusing on the range of driving electric fields amplitudes where a strong interplay between the Rabi spin oscillations and tunneling from the dot to continuum states can occur. A strong effect of the tunneling on the spin evolution in this regime occurs due to formation of mixed spin states. As a result, the tunneling strongly limits possible spin manipulations time. We demonstrate a backaction of the spin dynamics on the tunneling and position of the el…
Collective Chirped STIRAP in a Pair of Three-Level Atoms: Dressed-Manifold Dynamics and Compensation of the Rydberg-Rydberg Interaction-Induced Detuning
We theoretically investigate resonant dipole-dipole interaction (RDDI) between artificial atoms in a 1D geometry, implemented by N transmon qubits coupled through a transmission line. Similarly to the atomic cases, RDDI comes from exchange of virtual photons of the unexcited modes, and causes the so-called collective Lamb shift (CLS). To probe the shift, we effectively set one end of the transmission line as a mirror, and examine the reflection spectrum of the probe field from the other end. Our calculation shows that when a qubit is placed at the node of the standing wave formed by the incide…
The physical implementation of holonomic quantum computation is challenging due to the needed complex controllable interactions in multilevel quantum systems. Here we propose to implement nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation with conventional capacitive coupled superconducting transmon qubits. A universal set of holonomic gates is constructed with the help of the interaction with an auxiliary qubit rather than relying on delicate control over an auxiliary level of multilevel quantum systems. Explicitly, these quantum gates are realized by tunable interactions in an all-resonant way, whic…
