We study the non-perturbative properties of N=2 super conformal field theories in four dimensions using localization techniques. In particular we consider SU(2) gauge theories, deformed by a generic epsilon-background, with four fundamental flavors or with one adjoint hypermultiplet. In both cases we explicitly compute the first few instanton corrections to the partition function and the prepotential using Nekrasov's approach. These results allow to reconstruct exact expressions involving quasi-modular functions of the bare gauge coupling constant and to show that the prepotential terms satisfy a modular anomaly equation that takes the form of a recursion relation with an explicitly epsilon-dependent term. We then investigate the implications of this recursion relation on the modular properties of the effective theory and find that with a suitable redefinition of the prepotential and of the effective coupling it is possible, at least up to the third order in the deformation parameters, to cast the S-duality relations in the same form as they appear in the Seiberg-Witten solution of the undeformed theory.
A modification of the standard product used in local field theory by means of an associative deformed product is proposed. We present a class of deformed products, one for every spin S=0,1/2,1, that induces a nonlocal theory, displaying different form for different fields. This type of deformed product is naturally supersymmetric and it has an intriguing duality.
The $1/x^{2}$ deformed $c=1$ matrix model is studied at finite radius and non-zero cosmological constant. Calculational techniques are presented and illustrated in some examples. Furthermore, a new kind of $R \rightarrow 1/R$ duality is discovered which mixes different genus.
We show that boundary contributions of BCFW recursions can be interpreted as the form factors of some composite operators which we call 'boundary operators'. The boundary operators can be extracted from the operator product expansion of deformed fields. We also present an algorithm to compute the boundary operators using path integral.
The recursive method of Berends and Giele to compute tree-level gluon amplitudes is revisited using the framework of ten-dimensional super Yang-Mills. First we prove that the pure spinor formula to compute SYM tree amplitudes derived in 2010 reduces to the standard Berends-Giele formula from the 80s when restricted to gluon amplitudes and additionally determine the fermionic completion. Second, using BRST cohomology manipulations in superspace, alternative representations of the component amplitudes are explored and the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations among partial tree amplitudes are derive…
In this paper, we will analyse the superloop space formalism for a four dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in deformed superspace. We will deform the $\mathcal{N} =1$ superspace by imposing non-anticommutativity. This non-anticommutative deformation of the superspace will break half the supersymmetry of the original theory. So, this theory will have $\mathcal{N} =1/2$ supersymmetry. We will analyse the superloop space duality for this deformed supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using the $\mathcal{N} =1/2$ superspace formalism. We will demonstrate that the sources in the original theor…
On-shell recursion relation has been recognized as a powerful tool for calculating tree level amplitudes in quantum field theory, but it doesn't work well when the residue of the deformed amplitude $\hat{A}(z)$ doesn't vanish at infinity of $z$. However, in such situation, we still can get the right amplitude by computing the boundary contribution explicitly. In arXiv:0801.2385, background field method was first used to analyze the boundary behaviors of amplitudes with two deformed external lines in different theories. The same method has also been generalized to calculate the explicit boundar…
In this paper, we analyze the modification of integrable models in the $κ$-deformed space-time. We show that two dimensional isotropic oscillator problem, Kepler problem and MICZ-Kepler problem in $κ$-deformed space-time admit integrals of motion as in the commutative space. We also show that the duality equivalence between $κ$-deformed Kepler problem and $κ$-deformed two-dimensional isotropic oscillator explicitly, by deriving Bohlin-Sundman transformation which maps these two systems. These results are valid to all orders the the deformation parameter.
An attempt is made to formulate Gaiotto's S-duality relations in an explicit quantitative form. Formally the problem is that of evaluation of the Racah coefficients for the Virasoro algebra, and we approach it with the help of the matrix model representation of the AGT-related conformal blocks and Nekrasov functions. In the Seiberg-Witten limit, this S-duality reduces to the Legendre transformation. In the simplest case, its lifting to the level of Nekrasov functions is just the Fourier transform, while corrections are related to the beta-deformation. We calculate them with the help of the mat…
We study the $SU(2)_k/U(1)$-parafermion model perturbed by its first thermal operator. By formulating the theory in terms of a (perturbed) fermionic coset model we show that the model is equivalent to interacting WZW fields modulo free fields. In this scheme, the order and disorder operators of the $Z_k$ parafermion theory are constructed as gauge invariant composites. We find that the theory presents a duality symmetry that interchanges the roles of the spin and dual spin operators. For two particular values of the coupling constant we find that the theory recovers conformal invariance and th…
We use localization techniques to study the non-perturbative properties of an N=2 superconformal gauge theory with gauge group SU(3) and six fundamental flavours. The instanton corrections to the prepotential, the dual periods and the period matrix are calculated in a locus of special vacua possessing a Z_3 symmetry. In a semi-classical expansion, we show that these observables are constrained by S-duality via a modular anomaly equation which takes the form of a recursion relation. The solutions of the recursion relation are quasi-modular functions of Gamma_1(3), which is a subgroup of the S-d…
Linear recursion relations for the instanton corrections to the effective prepotential are derived for N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with one hypermultiplet in the adjoint representation of SU(N) using the Calogero-Moser parameterization of the Seiberg-Witten spectral curves. S-duality properties of the Calogero-Moser parameterization and conjectures on the Seiberg-Witten spectral curves generalized to arbitrary simply laced classical gauge groups are also discussed.
In ${\cal N}=5, 6, 8$ supergravities there are hidden symmetries of equations of motion, described by duality groups $SU(1,5), \, SO^*(12), \, E_{7(7)}$ respectively. UV divergences and known candidate counterterms violate the deformed duality symmetry current conservation. Extra higher derivative terms in the action are required to restore duality. We study the effect of a two-vector part of the counterterm for ${\cal N}\geq 5$ supergravities using the universality of the symplectic structure of extended supergravities. We construct a compact form of a deformed action with infinite number of …
We consider the duality between the four-dimensional S-matrix of planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and the expectation value of polygonal shaped Wilson loops in the same theory. We extend the duality to amplitudes with arbitrary helicity states by introducing a suitable supersymmetric extension of the Wilson loop. We show that this object is determined by a host of recursion relations, which are valid at tree level and at loop level for a certain "loop integrand" defined within the Lagrangian insertion procedure. These recursion relations reproduce the BCFW ones obeyed by tree-…
We derive modular anomaly equations from the Seiberg-Witten-Donagi curves for softly broken N=4 SU(n) gauge theories. From these equations we can derive recursion relations for the pre-potential in powers of m^2, where m is the mass of the adjoint hypermultiplet. Given the perturbative contribution of the pre-potential and the presence of ``gaps'' we can easily generate the m^2 expansion in terms of polynomials of Eisenstein series, at least for relatively low rank groups. This enables us to determine efficiently the instanton expansion up to fairly high order for these gauge groups, e. g. eig…
In this paper we consider the enumeration of orientable and non-orientable chord diagrams. We show that this enumeration is encoded in appropriate expectation values of the $β$-deformed Gaussian and RNA matrix models. We evaluate these expectation values by means of the $β$-deformed topological recursion, and - independently - using properties of quantum curves. We show that both these methods provide efficient and systematic algorithms for counting of chord diagrams with a given genus, number of backbones and number of chords.
Using a Lorentz invariant deformed string/gauge duality model at finite temperature we calculate the thermal fluctuation and the corresponding linear response, verifying the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The deformed AdS$_5$ is constructed by the insertion of an exponential factor $\exp(k/r^2)$ in the metric. We also compute the string energy and the mean square displacement in order to investigate the ballistic and diffusive regimes. Furthermore we have studied the dissipation and the linear response in the zero temperature scenario.
The so-called homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations can be considered a non-abelian generalization of T-duality--shift--T-duality (TsT) transformations. TsT transformations are known to preserve conformal symmetry to all orders in $α'$. Here we argue that (unimodular) YB deformations of a bosonic string also preserve conformal symmetry, at least to two-loop order. We do this by showing that, starting from a background with no NSNS-flux, the deformed background solves the $α'$-corrected supergravity equations to second order in the deformation parameter. At the same time we determine the re…
We consider various integrable two-parameter deformations of the $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ superstring with quantum group symmetry. Working on the string worldsheet in light-cone gauge and to quadratic order in fermions, we obtain their common massive tree-level two-body S matrix, which matches the expansion of the conjectured exact $q$-deformed S matrix. We then analyze the behavior of the exact S matrix under mirror transformation -- a double Wick rotation on the worldsheet -- and find that it satisfies a mirror duality relation analogous to the distinguished $q$-deformed $AdS_5 \times S…
Recent progress on scattering amplitudes in super Yang--Mills and superstring theory benefitted from the use of multiparticle superfields. They universally capture tree-level subdiagrams, and their generating series solve the non-linear equations of ten-dimensional super Yang--Mills. We provide simplified recursions for multiparticle superfields and relate them to earlier representations through non-linear gauge transformations of their generating series. In this work we discuss the gauge transformations which enforce their Lie symmetries as suggested by the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson duality bet…
We present general formulae for the TsT transformation (T-duality, shift, T-duality) of type II string backgrounds and open string boundary conditions. The TsT transformation provides a systematic procedure to find string theory duals of gauge theories with deformed products of fields in the lagrangian, and the duals can be analyzed by using transformed D-brane probes. As examples illustrating some features of the deformed theories, we consider the known backgrounds dual to non-commutative, dipole and beta-deformed N=4 Super Yang-Mills as well as new backgrounds dual to deformations of the rec…
We consider classical and quantum integrable sigma models and their relations with the solutions of renormalization group equations. We say that an integrable sigma model possesses the "nice" duality property if the dual quantum field theory has the weak coupling region. As an example, we consider the deformed $CP(n-1)$ sigma model with additional quantum degrees of freedom. We formulate the dual integrable field theory and use perturbed conformal field theory, perturbation theory, $S$-matrix, Bethe Ansatz and renormalization group methods to show that this field theory has the "nice" duality …
We first perform bosonic T-duality transformation on one of the marginal TsT (T-duality, shift, T-duality)-deformed $AdS_5\times S_5$ spacetime, which corresponds to 4D $\mathcal{N}=4$ non-commutative super Yang-Mills theory (NCSYM). We then construct the solution to killing spinor equations of the resulting background, and perform the fermionic T-duality transformation. The final dual geometry becomes the usual $AdS_5\times S_5$ but with the constant NS-NS B-field depending on the non-commutative parameter. As applications, we study the gluon scattering amplitude and open string (Wilson loop)…
We investigate epsilon-deformed N=2 superconformal gauge theories in four dimensions, focusing on the N=2* and Nf=4 SU(2) cases. We show how the modular anomaly equation obeyed by the deformed prepotential can be efficiently used to derive its non-perturbative expression starting from the perturbative one. We also show that the modular anomaly equation implies that S-duality is implemented by means of an exact Fourier transform even for arbitrary values of the deformation parameters, and then we argue that it is possible, perturbatively in the deformation, to choose appropriate variables such …
In this work, we study the electric and magnetic Sachs form factors for proton and neutron by using a deformed gravity/gauge model. We describe holographically baryons as well as gauge bosons which are ruled by the parameters $k_{B}$ and $k_γ$, associated with confinement and kinematical energy scales, respectively. Then, we construct the interaction action and calculate the electric and magnetic form factors for the proton and the neutron, and their electromagnetic sizes. The obtained results are compatible with those found in the literature from experimental and theoretical data.
We study matrix models in the beta ensemble by building on the refined recursion relation proposed by Chekhov and Eynard. We present explicit results for the first beta-deformed corrections in the one-cut and the two-cut cases, as well as two applications to supersymmetric gauge theories: the calculation of superpotentials in N=1 gauge theories, and the calculation of vevs of surface operators in superconformal N=2 theories and their Liouville duals. Finally, we study the beta deformation of the Chern-Simons matrix model. Our results indicate that this model does not provide an appropriate des…
We enhance the action of higher abelian gauge theory associated to a gerbe on an M5-brane with an action of a torus ${\mathbb T}^n (n\ge 2)$, by a noncommutative ${\mathbb T}^n$-deformation of the M5-brane. The ingredients of the noncommutative action and equations of motion include the deformed Hodge duality, deformed wedge product, and the noncommutative integral over the noncommutative space obtained by strict deformation quantization. As an application we then introduce a variant model with an enhanced action in which we show that the corresponding partition function is a modular form, whi…
We construct new representations of tree-level amplitudes in D-dimensional gauge theories with deformations via higher-mass-dimension operators $α' F^3$ and $α'^{2} F^4$. Based on Berends-Giele recursions, the tensor structure of these amplitudes is compactly organized via off-shell currents. On the one hand, we present manifestly cyclic representations, where the complexity of the currents is systematically reduced. On the other hand, the duality between color and kinematics due to Bern, Carrasco and Johansson is manifested by means of non-linear gauge transformations of the currents. We expl…
We consider the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory in four dimensions with $N_{f}=4$ massive fundamental hypermultiplets. The low energy effective action depends on the deformation parameters $\varepsilon_{1}, \varepsilon_{2}$, the scalar field expectation value $a$, and the hypermultiplet masses ${\bf m}=(m_{1}, m_{2}, m_{3}, m_{4})$. Motivated by recent findings in the $\mathcal{N}=2^{*}$ theory, we explore the theories that are characterized by special fixed ratios $\varepsilon_{2}/\varepsilon_{1}$ and ${\bf m}/\varepsilon_{1}$ and propose a simple condition on the structure …
We give a proof of BCFW recursion relations for all tree-level amplitudes of gravitons in General Relativity. The proof follows the same basic steps as in the BCFW construction and it is an extension of the one given for next-to-MHV amplitudes by one of the authors and P. Svrček in hep-th/0502160. The main obstacle to overcome is to prove that deformed graviton amplitudes vanish as the complex variable parameterizing the deformation is taken to infinity. This step is done by first proving an auxiliary recursion relation where the vanishing at infinity follows directly from a Feynman diagram an…
We prove that all open string theory disc amplitudes in a flat background obey Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) on-shell recursion relations, up to a possible reality condition on a kinematic invariant. Arguments that the same holds for tree level closed string amplitudes are given as well. Non-adjacent BCFW-shifts are related to adjacent shifts through monodromy relations for which we provide a novel CFT based derivation. All possible recursion relations are related by old-fashioned string duality. The field theory limit of the analysis for amplitudes involving gluons is explicitly shown to …
In this note, we study different limits of an Omega-deformed (2,0) six-dimensional gauge theory realized in a M-theory fluxtrap background. Via a chain of dualities, we connect the Omega-deformed SYM to a new four-dimensional gauge theory which we refer to as the reciprocal gauge theory. This theory has several properties in common with Liouville field theory, such as its gauge coupling b^2 =ε_2 / ε_1, and its behavior under S-duality. Finally, we realize the BPS states on the SYM side of the AGT correspondence and follow them along the chain of dualities. In the fluxtrap frame, we are dealing…

A weak quantum mechanical coupling is constructed permitting superluminal communication within a preferred region of a gravitating AdS_5 spacetime. This is achieved by adding a spatially non-local perturbation of a special kind to the Hamiltonian of a four-dimensional conformal field theory with a weakly-coupled AdS dual, such as maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In particular, two issues are given careful treatment: (1) the UV-completeness of our deformed CFT, guaranteeing the existence of a ``deformed string theory'' AdS dual, and (2) the demonstration that superluminal effects can…
We study the instanton partition functions of two well-known superconformal field theories with mass deformations. Two types of anomaly equations, namely, the modular anomaly and holomorphic anomaly, have been discovered in the literature. We provide a clean solution to the long standing puzzle about their precise relation, and obtain some universal formulas. We show that the partition function is invariant under the SL(2,Z) duality which exchanges theories at strong coupling with those of weak coupling.

We derive the q-deformation of the chiral Gross-Taylor holomorphic string large N expansion of two dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. Delta functions on symmetric group algebras are replaced by the corresponding objects (canonical trace functions) for Hecke algebras. The role of the Schur-Weyl duality between unitary groups and symmetric groups is now played by q-deformed Schur-Weyl duality of quantum groups. The appearance of Euler characters of configuration spaces of Riemann surfaces in the expansion persists. We discuss the geometrical meaning of these formulae.
We investigate color-kinematics duality for gauge-theory amplitudes produced by the pure nonabelian Yang-Mills action deformed by higher-dimension operators. For the operator denoted by F^3, the product of three field strengths, the existence of color-kinematic dual representations follows from string-theory monodromy relations. We provide explicit dual representations, and show how the double-copy construction of gravity amplitudes based on them is consistent with the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations. It leads to the amplitudes produced by Einstein gravity coupled to a dilaton field phi, and defo…
In this paper we have analyzed the $κ$-deformed Minkowski spacetime through the light of the interference phenomena in QFT where two opposite chiral fields are put together in the same multiplet and its consequences are discussed. The chiral models analyzed here are the chiral Schwinger model, its generalized version and its gauge invariant version, where a Wess-Zumino term were added. We will see that the final actions obtained here are in fact related to the original ones via duality transformations.
We use localization techniques to study several duality proposals for supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions reminiscent of Seiberg duality. We compare the partition functions of dual theories deformed by real mass terms and FI parameters. We find that Seiberg-like duality for N=3 Chern-Simons gauge theories proposed by Giveon and Kutasov holds on the level of partition functions and is closely related to level-rank duality in pure Chern-Simons theory. We also clarify the relationship between the Giveon-Kutasov duality and a duality in theories of fractional M2 branes and propose a …
We study the scattering amplitudes of mass-deformed Chern-Simons theories and Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with N=2 supersymmetry in three dimensions. In particular, we derive the on-shell supersymmetry algebras which underlie the scattering matrices of these theories. We then compute various 3 and 4-point on-shell tree-level amplitudes in these theories. For the mass-deformed Chern-Simons theory, odd-point amplitudes vanish and we find that all of the 4-point amplitudes can be encoded elegantly in superamplitudes. For the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory, we obtain all of the 4-point tree-l…
These lectures trace the origin of string theory as a theory of hadronic interactions (predating QCD itself) to the present ideas on how the QCD string may arise in Superstring theory in a suitably deformed background metric. The contributions of 'tHooft's large Nc limit, Maldacena's String/Gauge duality conjecture and lattice spectral data are emphasized to motivate and hopefully guide further efforts to define a fundamental QCD string.
Working with well known models in $(2+1)D$ we discuss the physics behind the deformation of the canonical structure of these theories. A new deformation is constructed linking the massless scalar field theory with the self-dual theory. This is the exact dual of the known deformation connecting the Maxwell theory with the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. Duality is used to establish a web of relations between the mentioned theories and a physical picture of the deformation procedure is suggested.
We construct the low-energy effective field theory for a D3-brane in constant R-R 2-form potential background as the S-dual theory of a D3-brane in NS-NS B-field background. Despite the non-Abelian algebra of the noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry, the electromagnetic duality transformation can be carried out to all orders, and the dual Lagrangian is given in a compact form. The gauge algebra is found to be a mixture of a deformed area-preserving diffeomorphism and the usual U(1) gauge symmetry.
We summarize our recent work on supergravity backgrounds dual to part of the Coulomb branch of N=1 theories constructed as marginal deformations of N=4 Yang-Mills. In particular, we present a summary of the behaviour of the heavy quark-antiquark potential which shows confining behaviour in the IR as well as of the spectrum of the wave equation. The reduced supersymmetry is due to the implementation of T-duality in the construction of the deformed supergravity solutions. As a new result we analyze and explicitly solve the Killing spinor equations of the N=1 background in the superconformal limi…
